Shockingly, I consider this to be the best book out of the three. In the first two books, Emilia's naivety got on my nerves. While there were moments that certainly happened in this one—such as thinking you could subtly interrogate a duke of hell while writhing in his lap—thankfully this story wasn't introducing her to new characters and situations left and right, leaving her all but completely out of the loop. Her relationship with Wrath is more settled, she understands the politics of this world, and has grown into her power. All good things! That being said, the main criticisms I have revolves around the plot was moved forward, Emilia's overpoweredness, and especially the ending. I had no investment in the murder mystery—why would I care about some random side character we never met?—and while Vittoria's goals made sense, the execution of her plans did not, particularly when viewed retroactively. Without any spoilers, I was disappointed by the "sacrifice" of the ending, but more particularly about how that sacrifice was "corrected." Women aren't allowed to have power of their own, it appears. I've also seen some criticisms regarding the amount of sex in this book. Because it was marketed as YA, there are certain expectations that go along with that. This entire series should have been NA, given the hellscape setting and themes. While the language used is not "adult" (euphemisms abound) it's very clear what is happening without it. As an adult reader, I didn't have a problem with it, but someone else might. I also don't understand the reaction of "Wrath is boring now"—what is boring about loving, supporting, (and basically worshiping) your badass wife? 📸 Scroll through for some brief thoughts I posted on my Tumblr as I read along. EDIT: apparently it didn't like my photos. Sorry. 📚 Maniscalco, Kerri. Kingdom of the Feared. I had been fretting and grouchy about not being able to easily purchase issue 130 of @simplycrochetmag because I really wanted this insert from the mag. Wouldn’t you know I was able to find a digital copy of the issue at the library using the @libby.app and I am CHUFFED. The Power of a Good Book: Rediscovering the benefits of Reading
Welcome back to Lamon Reviews. Today, I wanted to talk about the joys of reading. I tend to be a reader that will binge a lot of books and then go on a break and repeat. I love reading as many of you know and love sharing the books I enjoyed with you guys. Last week I listened to the audiobook of my first and what I think is my favorite nostalgic novel for me. Dragon Tears by Dean Koontz. It is…

And so, after being afraid to sleep after watching The Exorcist III and Rosemary’s Baby, I decide to borrow through @libby.app the Last Days by Brian Evenson. And this is a book about a detective and a cult. I don’t know if I’ll actually follow through with reading the whole thing but I’ll try. Why do I torture myself like this you ask? …. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #octoberreads #horrorreads #cults #detectivestory #scaryreading #bookstagram #tbr #athousandbookstoreadblog #currentlyreading #libbyapp #librarybooks #ebooks #digitallibrarycard https://www.instagram.com/p/CjUHCeDLN5v/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🌟 🌟 BOOK REVIEW🌟 🌟 💫 Simone St. James' The Book of Cold Cases was one of the most awaited reads of 2022 in my TBR. The author is in fine form as the book kicks off setting up the eerie Greer mansion, housing the equally mysterious Beth Greer- a serial murder suspect of the 70s. The book picks up when true crime/cold case blogger Shea Collins has a chance encounter with Beth Greer in 2017 and surprisingly gets an opportunity to interview the self-reclusive Beth. The ensuing interactions at the mansion with supernatural incidents leave more questions than Shea had hoped for. Whether Shea uncovers the truth of the lady serial killer, can she uncover the reasons behind the mysteries of the mansion and are the unnatural deaths of Beth's parents related to any of this form the plot of the author's latest offering. Positives first- the 1st half. This was some of the spookiest set-ups I have encountered since possibly The Shining and The Mexican Gothic. The audiobook narrators, Brittany Pressley as Shea (especially during the first encounter with the supernatural) and Kirsten Potter as the mysterious, no-nonsense Beth are a knockout. Unfortunately, as a whole, The Book of Cold Cases honestly left me with mixed feelings. Especially since the 1st half of the book is an absolute cracker. The gothic atmosphere set up around the Greer mansion heightens the tension but unfortunately, the unravelling left me a bit underwhelmed. **Spoilers ahead** The back and forth between the 70s and present-day are fine until the introduction of Lily which is where the story does a complete 180. The court encounters though engaging, felt unnecessary since as readers you already know that Beth has been acquitted all those years ago. The final encounter between Lily and Shea was a bit confusing too as there wasn't a mystery surrounding the deaths by that point. Overall, it would be a 3.5-4 and I would still recommend it for fans of horror for the first 150 odd pages which have enough to leave you with jump scares you go in expecting. #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #thebookofcoldcases #simonestjames #gothic #horrorbookstagram #mystery #booklovers #libbyapp #audiobook https://www.instagram.com/p/CeP7b0AAUwR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

So I have a little bit of mixed feelings on this book. There was a lot I liked. I loved that Janet Watson was a capable educated disabled veteran who also was a queer Black woman. I liked that Sara Holmes was also a supremely intelligent queer Black woman. I was intrigued by the slightly dystopian setting of post-Trump USA during a new Civil War. 🔍 I'm not one for political thrillers but the fact that this dealt so much with veterans and the VA Medical Center features so prominently in the book I could relate to it. Both my parents are veterans and worked for the VA for 20+ years not to mention I'm at the VA multiple times a week since my mom has all her appointments and dialysis there. So the scenes and interactions with the VA and the personel were pretty accurate in my experience. 🔍 The pacing seemed a bit off for me and it felt a little awkward to have a Sherlock reimaginging where Holmes was secondary and Watson was the focus. (But then again i havent read the orignals so...) Also I didn't realize until I was almost halfway thru the book that although Claire O'Dell is queer she is not a POC. I had to work through my feelings on a novel with 2 Black women protagonists and most characters being POC being written by a white woman. I can say that I feel like O'Dell handled it well and there were no glaring "Men writing women character-esqe" moments. The ending was a little anticlimactic but I will be checking out The Hound of Justice because I'm curious to as how Janet Watson develops as a character. 🔍 3.5/5 #AStudyInHonor #BookReview #BookRiotReadHarder2022 #PolitcalThiller #HolmesWatsonReImagining #QueerAuthors #SFF #LibbyApp #audiobook #Veterans #disabledheroine #VAMedicalCenter #DiverseBookstagrammersRead #Booknerd #Nerdymamabooks #Bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc9TwKlrX81/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Stays Krunchy in Milk Episode 492: The Going Raw of Confections
Tee shares his Record Store Day adventures and how Taylor Swift fans won the day. This leads us to discussing how resellers are really ruining the collecting game. Speaking of collectables, Hasbro called out The Pinkertons on a guy who purchased some collectable cards. We discuss how “Seasoning Police” went from some internet nonsense to just straight up racism. Even though we won’t be reviewing Oreo on air anymore, we certainly have a great deal of experience with them so when an article shows up discussing the top Oreo flavor, team SKiM had to chime in. Ant shares some of his hot takes including him not being a fan of products that scream “all natural”, he also feels Judy Blume was ahead of the game and must be respected after watching the documentary about her. Box continues his health journey and is considering cutting off his hair for good. Tee tires of being the lone person of color at events. We then venture over to your favorite sub-Reddit for some AITA. And of course, we share our entertainment choices from the week with y’all.
Enjoy,
Team SKiM
