The Ace of swords -  overanalyzing tarot pt 1

the the suit of swords in tarot entails the exploration of the mind; the different ways we engage with ideas, concepts, principals and the different ways we go about communicating thoughts to other people. naturally we should begin with the ace of swords.

One of my fav books on tarot which actually happens to be a guidebook to its corresponding tarot deck, Tarot Apokalypsis, written by Erik C. Dunne and Kim Huggens, had this to say about the ace of swords:

‘‘What must come before word, what must come before thought? What must become before memory? what cannot be seen, yet must come before seeing? I am speech, but i am silent I am spoken of yet I am ineffable. I am the most basic principal necessary for the step from nothing, to choas to something.’‘

The ace of swords is the abstract coming in the form of a thought, its takes the messy, fragmented parts of an idea and gives it the structure to be formed into an idea. Results from a 2020 study showed that people may have 6,000 thoughts per day, yet not all of those thoughts are given meaning. Not all of them get the chance to develop into something, but the ones that do form the basis of a belief.

The ace of swords represents the thoughts we give power to over others. the crown the ace of swords is often paired with throughout different decks is supposed to signify victory, but in this context it represents the status we give thoughts as opposed to the 6,000 other thoughts that pass through our mind a day. 

Divinatory meaning- upright and reversed

reflect on the thoughts you give power to every day. what ideas and thoughts do you give meaning, and how does the meaning you attach to these thoughts impact you. how do your fleeting thoughts form the basis of a belief? this card appears when you’re starting to understand something for the first time, when you’re building the foundational knowledge to understand a larger concept or idea.

in reversed, it gives me the impression of failing to understand the thoughts that pass you by or lacking the foundational knowledge of a concept or skill. it denotes that you’re needing to get back to basics of something and ensuring understanding of it before continuing. 

The ace of swords as a unifying principal

tarot of apokalpysis attaches the ace of swords to the idea of cosmology and how we individually understand how the world came to be. it says;

‘’this assumption of cosmic order is necessary for further assumptions to be made, and its upon this foundation that we build everything else. This refers not only to religion or myth, science to too must build its own cosmology, (or more appropriately, a paradigm) within which is may refer to the laws it has set and decide upon the questions it wants to answer ’’

The ace of swords being connected to this idea of a cosmology or paradigm gives it a more sophisticated interpretation, allowing us to understand the cards that follow the ace of swords. For example, if the ace of swords is a paradigm that sets the basis for understanding a larger topic, then the two of swords is differentiating between ideas and comparing different paradigms to one another. allowing them to compete for accuracy. 

The big bang theory is an example of a paradigm, it allows us to understand how the world came to be. The creation story told in genesis, the norse myth and saga of creation, these are all ways in which people form their basis of understanding of the world and our purpose in it. 

The ace of swords could be the assumptions we have that allow other assumptions to be made on top of that, forming a foundation for an opinion or paradigm. It’s the pre-requisite understanding of a concept, for example, to understand algebra you would have to understand multiplication, division, adding etc. To understand chemistry you have to understand an atom, its qualities and the various forms matter takes. 

Ace of swords paired with other cards

The ace of swords is a hypothesis in early stages, not yet tested or verified. if the ace of swords becomes paired with the ten of swords, its a hypothesis thats been prematurely dismissed or falsified before it had the chance to grow. 

if paired with the 7 of swords, its a person selectively taking what they feel is true about an idea or paradigm, and leaving what contradicts their ideas, instead of adopting and integrating the whole idea to fit the truth. for example, Christians using the bible only when it fits their worldview, not when it contradicts it. 

when paired with the tower, its an idea that disrupts an existing structure or assumption. Think Kepler revolutionizing how we understand the planets orbit around the sun, developing the three laws of planetary motion. 

Astrology of the ace of swords

the ace of swords refers to gemini, libra and aquarius. All three signs interact with the development and communication of ideas in interesting ways. All three signs are constantly thinking, analyzing, comparing ideas, and creating new ones. Aquarius is innovative and wants to disrupt models of how we think, gemini allows space for several ideas to exist at once, and libra wants to be able to choose between ideas without hurting anyones feelings.

Cancer sun + Aries moon - likely squares; protective and strong-willed, ambitious and knows what he wants as both are cardinal signs. If they do square, there could be a case of emotional turmoil and confusion on how to properly express himself, how to even deal with such feelings. Cancer is sentimental and deeply emotional while Aries would prefer to not revel in their feelings (although funnily they're a very emotionally sensitive sign too).

Cancer sun conjuncts Cancer mercury - Good communication skills and high intelligence; active mind; both being in Cancer, makes him intuituve and sentimental. There's a family and home focus. Inseong is incredibly intelligent and he does seem to care for his family a lot. Inseong does not cry much, but there was a moment during a concert where the members were talking about their families and he actually became emotional during the topic.

Aries Moon + Cancer Mercury - likely squares; if his moon squares his mercury, he may have a hard time with clearly expressing his feelings and thoughts clearly. Could be an impulsive way of showing it or an attempt to repress them. Inseong generally doesn't show his negative feelings (having only openly cried twice throughout his career iirc), he seems to prefer being positive.

Gemini venus square Virgo mars - a conflict between balancing the want for intimacy and harmony (venus) with the want for independence and control (mars). This could be troublesome in relationships (if underdeveloped) as this placement craves attention and acceptance, can be quite demanding for it at times. Tends to be affectionate but also overwhelming with the need for reciprocity. I do see this a bit with him as he is very affectionate with his members and does openly ask for love back. On a more positive note, it seems to give the native a drive for creative expression, which Inseong definitely has a lot of.

The Virgo mars also gives him high expectations for himself and others, so this may wedge some issues between him and others if they don't meet them.

Energetic Aries moon and hardworking Virgo mars can explain why Inseong pursues many activities. Likes to genuinely keep himself busy. I sometimes wonder if it is to keep himself from thinking about his deeper thoughts and feelings...there seems to be a sense of trouble of dealing with his emotions. But I could be wrong as there's no confirmed time for him.

Possible rising: Libra - Charming and fun, he certainly knows how to liven up the atmosphere. Loves to make people laugh and have a good time. It also seems he has had to settle some conflicts and/or at least seems a bit awkward with conflict. E.g He was an MC for a P1Harmony for a series and when the group started to get a bit rowdy once, he seemed very unsure what to do. The other members have also spoken about how Inseong has a hard time saying "no" to other people, indicating he is probably a bit of a people pleaser.

It could also give him a Cancer MC, with Sun and Mercury in 10th. Seems quite fitting for him. Career is important for him as he's always working on and pursuing many things (musicals, idol work, variety shows, even pursuing his college education when he was juggling all of this work).

Possible Libra rising and Gemini venus could explain his flirty and talkative nature to the others, especially as both are air placements (mentally energetic and analytical). Quite affectionate and shameless in pursuing and showing that love.

Possible Aries moon in 7th with Aries 7h could explain Inseong's affectionate nature to his members. This placement also reminds me of the time in an interview some years ago where they were asked which member they would date. Inseong chose Youngbin as he believed Youngbin would protect him. 7th house Aries tends to be attracted to people who seem strong and protective.

For any tests and exams, I believe good transits in the 3rd house or Mercury is what we have to look at.

Mercury in the 3rd house shows the best time for concentration, anything involving the mind, focus, ideas. Your mind is on during this time. Venus and Jupiter in the 3rd house aren't really connected to concentration but could bring luck for any work with information, documents, studies, etc.

Transit Mercury, Venus or Jupiter conjunct the natal Mercury

Transit Mercury conjunct the natal Mercury shows the possibly best time for a person's mind. Ideas, creativity, better memory, more focus. Transit Mercury conjunct Venus or Jupiter is also good with Jupiter being slightly better as it is connected to studies, education, curiosity, intellectual exploration.

Transit Mercury, Venus or Jupiter conjunct the ruler of the 3rd House

e.g. You have Aquarius on the 3rd house cusp. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus therefore Uranus is the ruler of your 3rd house cusp. So Transit Mercury conjunct your natal Uranus could indicate a good time for your intellect, studies, any intellectual work.

Similarly to transit Mercury in the 3rd house, transit Mercury conjunct the ruler of the 3rd house can show a good time for any intellectual work. Better memory, more focus, ability to concentrate. Venus or Jupiter are just lucky for intellectual work and the memory. Jupiter is great for education-related activities.

Something else I have to mention is the 6th House. Transit Mercury in 6th is great for studying for tests, exams, etc. because a person is very responsible and concentrated, pays better attention to details. On the negative side, it can make an individual a lot more anxious, less confident in their knowledge and abilities.

For education - 9th house.

This wouldn't be just for exams, but a generally good time for your academic performance.

Transit Mercury in 9th shows a great time for the academic performace, ability to concentrate on your education and studies. Venus is great for you if your studies are creative. Jupiter in 9th can show a period with more academic opportunities, growth.

Similarly to the previos paragraph, this shows a great time for the academic performance all for different reasons. Mercury - good time for exams, tests, studies and knowledge. Venus - lucky time, good for creativity or artistic majors, Jupiter - luck, opportunities in the academic environment.

For the actual day for taking the exam, a lot of people would say the Transit Moon in the 3rd House, but I myself believe that even though the Moon in a certain house can show more focus on that house in those 1-3 days, it can also bring some chaos, uncertainty.

 i think a lot about dwight and his intense drive for fairness and justice. he's been consistently mistreated throughout his entire life, from school to sports to the many jobs he acquired and lost, and he just... rolls with it, tries to laugh it off when he's pushed around, verbally or physically.

I got bored, frankly, it's annoyance if anything, of going to my university library. To remedy that I've been going to a public library branch and today it really made my day!

They had a display about book recommendations based on zodiac signs. I always find zodiac themed items a little funny, and naturally, I wanted to see what would be deemed a good Sagittarius, my own zodiac sign, recommendation.
