I am so so so sore today.
After weeding the past three years, we had two empty shelves at the head of our elementary fiction section. We also had several shelves in that section that had no more room for new arrivals. I shuffled all the elementary chapter books down to make room in those tight sections. And then I did the opposite in the high school fiction, which had some shelves with just 10-12 books on them. I condensed that down to create an open shelf at the end of the aisle for new arrivals in that section.
I moved every chapter book we own. And crawled on the floor through most of it because 90% of my patrons are tiny people who need low shelves.

I was off today, so I missed all the fun at work. And by fun I mean our security guard told a patron that she needed to take her phone call into the vestibule, and the woman responded by jumping on our security guard and pulling her hair and punching her and biting her, so our security guard pepper sprayed the patron and my supervisor had to evacuate the lobby and call the cops.
I didn't even know she carried pepper spray. I don't think it's library issued. Hope she doesn't get in trouble for it.

There are probably only like four people here who are gonna understand this rage but
I don’t know if I physically CAN fight the entire Baker & Taylor staff, but if they don’t stop sending “processed” books to my library without jackets and tattle tape I’m gonna fuckin TRY
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk

I had a very mentally taxing day at work yesterday.
Someone returned a Cat in the Hat themed board game, which, among other things, includes a set of pieces referred to as "playthings."
Now, the patron just so happened to have returned the game missing the "ball plaything" specifically, so I had to fill out a little form about the missing "ball plaything" and then send them an email to let them know they had forgotten to return the "ball plaything" with the rest of the game and to please bring the "ball plaything" back if they found it.
Later, the patron called back to say that they did not know where the "ball plaything" was and would not be able to return it, so then I had to fill out another form that said that the patron was unable to find the "ball plaything" and ask tech services if we would need to charge the patron for the missing "ball plaything."
I had to do all of this with professionalism, and it was very difficult and I very nearly failed, but I managed to pull through in the end.

I’ve only helped with one Christmas activity so far this year and I’m already over it. The littles are cute but that’s enough Christmas for one year.

not all heroes wear capes
some wear firefighter helmets and risk getting burned. some wear EMT uniforms. some wear scrubs and risk getting sick. and SOME wear Library nametags and SNAP themselves with RUBBER bands like an idiot while testing them to see which ones are brittle

seriously have been thinking about this all night long. call me autistic but the fact that 90% of workplaces the point is not to get your work done and then be done doing it but to instead perform an elaborate social dance in which you find something to do even when you're done doing everything you need to do in order to show your fellow workers that you, too, are Working . because you are at Work . disgusting why cant we all agree that if there is no work immediately to be done. we just dont do anything

The only downside of putting books on hold at the library is that they all seem to come at once, no matter how you attempt to space them out.

Why I Don't Like Celebrity Book Clubs
I’M BAACCKKK! Not that it’s been a super-long time, but I’m hoping this post will kick me back into a somewhat regular posting schedule again. I’m not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I really can’t stand these celebrity book-clubs/celebrity endorsements of books. There are a few reasons, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way. I have only ever read one that was…

The good and bad of pride displays
The good is that the displays are going well this year. I've even managed to move a few of my "I promise this is queer, yes I know the cover doesn't scream romance just trust me" titles. The picture book display in particular had been decimated, genuinely. This isn't some Hide the Pride bullshit.
The bad is that I'm out of picture books to refill the display with. 😭 I had to raid the biographies for easy titles about actual LGBTQ people, and even that didn't fill the whole display. I had to resort to putting up Lil Nas X's alphabet book, which as far as I know has nothing to do with pride(disclaimer: I haven't read it, merely admired the cover) other than that the author happens to be gay! With some artful rearranging, I managed to create the illusion that the display was, more or less, filled.
And then. And then! It got better-worse, because I walked by and there were holes again, not 30 minutes after I'd restocked. Turns out my manager came along behind me and thought the last remaining titles that I'd dredged up from the depths of the stacks were so delightful that she had to take them home to share with her wife. 🤦‍♀️ Like, yay? But also, why!? How can we have pride when you've taken it all home? 😂
