We are all aware that libraries across the United States are under attack. Thanks to groups like Moms for Liberty and other outspoken “concerned citizens,” there has been actual legislative action at multiple levels of government to limit what libraries can do and provide to their communities. Even in the places where there hasn’t been that kind of action, those same concerned citizens have mounted acts of intimidation to instill fear and block access...In light of this, I’ve heard many iterations of the same question: how can we help? What do libraries and library staff need right now?

This is a friendly reminder that libraries exist and that they have more than just books.
Now, some libraries have more services than others but even the most basic libraries will have shelves upon shelves of dvd, cd, books, games, etc… that you can borrow and use for free(!!!)
Some more bougie libraries will also have other awesome stuff.
For example, I once went to a library with a recording booth with a good quality mic, they had a green screen room, cameras that could be borrowed, computers with the Adobe suite to do editing, as well as a plethora of other resources and help from librarians.
Another thing, ask what your local librarians can do. They often are really good at researching and also might be able to borrow things from other libraries as well.
Also, once you get a library card you can sign up for Libby that has a ton of books and audio books (again) for free.
Personally I just borrowed the 4th series of doctor who and have been watching the episodes and extra content on the dvds. I’m having a blast!

Keep seeing Barbie stuff everywhere, and I don't know much about it, but I will NOT miss this opportunity to say that my library has tons of Barbie movies available for checkout and yours probably does too.

How To Rescue A Wet Book
ACT QUICKLY! Press out as much excess water as you can.
Blot off any standing water, interleave the pages with paper towels or newsprint, and place something flat and heavy on top to help keep it from warping.
Did that solve it? Awesome!
Help, it’s still wet!
How much time do you have? How much damage is ok? It’s never going to be exactly the same as before, but at this point you’ve got four basic options:
1. Never mind—this is a lost cause.
REPLACE IT.
2. I don’t care about damage—I just need it dry asap!
Unless you have access to a vacuum chamber, BLOW DRY IT.
This is not ideal, because heat and direct airflow cause uneven drying, and you’ll see the most warping and damage.
3. I have a little time, and some damage is ok.
AIR DRY IT.
Stand the book upright with pages fanned, or hang on a clothesline/hanger in a cool, dry area, with good airflow but no direct breeze. (A fan is ok if it’s blowing away rather than towards the book.)
Be careful—moisture and heat and time are a prime breeding ground for mold.
4. I don’t care how long it takes—I just want it to stay pretty, and/or I’m allergic to mold.
FREEZE IT.
What? Why?!
Freezing stops water absorption, damage, and mold, so get it in the freezer as quick as possible!
But how will it dry???
Through the magic of ✨sublimation!✨ Did you know that given enough time, ice can evaporate without going through a water stage?! Cool, huh :)
To maintain its shape, strap your book between boards (I’ve used rubberbands and thick cardboard). Wrap loosely in freezer paper or a towel, and place spine-up in your freezer. To avoid ice crystals, colder is better—if you have a deep freezer that doesn’t get opened much, use that.
Now we just wait!
No seriously. I had a hardback book that was 75% wet, and it’s just been hanging out in my deep freezer for two years. I took it out yesterday, and damage is fairly minimal—just whatever warping happened during the initial press-to-dry stage.

Somehow, someway, I was gifted the responsibility of Collection’s Development for Adult Fiction at my library.
😈😈😈
Why, no. I am not ordering all the Star Wars novels we are missing. Why do you ask?

Tonight, our city council very disappointingly decided to look at proposals from private companies to potentially take over management of our city library system (a library system that is very highly reviewed and has been running just fine) in order to reduce budget.
This is, of course, a terrible idea and very frustrating that it's even being entertained as an option, but...
The amount of people who showed up to speak and show their support for the library... there were 100 speakers (the max), and from what I caught of the livestream about 90% of them were there to defend the library. There were teenagers, parents, elderly, even a 9 year old. The room was filled to capacity, people had to wait in the lobby. I think I heard there were some 1000 emails sent (one was mine).
While the decision to move forward with this possibility is incredibly disappointing, I'm hoping the amount of support shown is a sign this will not go further.
Protect your libraries 📚

i have a question about libby since you work at a library!! on the app you can see ebook titles available in the system even if your library hasn’t purchased it yet, and you can select ‘notify me if my library makes this available’ - can my library see that info? like can they see that these are ebook titles patrons are hoping we’ll get?
yep! we can see how many people have tagged a title and when, and use that just like we would number of holds or checkouts or anything else. it is of course up to individual libraries how they use that data, but the short answer is yes: we can see it!

I just spent the last hour in a meeting debating the role capitalization plays in determining if something is "official," "important" or "labeling". It has to be on a case-by-case basis, yes, so we were debating within a specific context. We still couldn't decide anything because as soon as something seems to be the case, multiple exceptions were pointed out.
All that to say, I'm gonna let my brain enjoy some dumb stuff for a while.
