Do you know much about dyeing with lichens? I don't know much about it myself but am curious on what the standpoint is from those who study them. Ethical harvesting has been a huge thing I have heard from dyers in what I have seen.

I do know a bit! I got really into collecting lichens for dying, but when it came to the actual dying part I kinda lost my hyperfocus. But everything I learned came from "Lichen Dyes: The New Source Book" by Karen Diadick Casselman, which has a great section on the ethics of harvesting. I try to only collect lichens for dying that:

I can recognize

I know are abundant

are detached from the substrate or are otherwise in danger of being destroyed

are in unprotected areas

I find plenty of material in roadside gutters, in parking lots, on walking trails and sidewalks, on broken or cut branches, at parks and just about every tiny green space around shops and office buildings, etc. etc. I would never advocate for large-scale or commercial harvesting or collection, the impact should be insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and is a great way to learn about and connect with your local lichen species.

“Do you?”

Rahgot’s broken grin curled to an obscene amount as Elyden hooked his claws around the man’s collarbones. His once pearly whites were crooked and knocked out of his bleeding mouth. 

“Yes.” Elyden sneered as he gripped harder into the bone that was beginning to bulge past the pale skin. “Your mother should’ve swallowed you from the afterthought of your father’s short stains.” 

The dragon priest burst out laughing. His howls indiscernible from pain and mocking as Elyden mercilessly dug deeper into his bones. Nails acting as hooks, Elyden dug underneath the atmoran’s bones to get a better grip for them. 

“If you want to hurt me, you have to try a lot harder than that, Dragonborn.” Rahgot’s eyes were red from tears and eyelids wide open. As if Elyden had stretched out and sewn that lids to forever stay wide open. It was a tempting thought. 

Elyden had rarely ever seen Rahgot display anything but his smug scorn for others. Even behind that mask, his teeth were always elongated out into a smile. His fangs sharpened like his tongue as he happily tore people down with his words. Thin eyes perked up in a cat-like precision as he watched everyone’s movements and criticized each breath. 

He hated that man. Despised his very presence. Spat at the sound of his name. Gagged at the smell of pine mulch. Detested his harsh tone. Abhorred his scratchy voice. Loathed his cold hands and warm hands. Revolted at the idea of letting Rahgot back into his bed once more. Idolized the feeling of being yearned for, even if it was just so that Rahgot could brag that ‘he got to shag the Last Dragonborn’. 

Even as lonely Elyden has been for the past few decades — Rahgot whimpered as Elyden tugged at the collarbone, beautifully mixed with the snapping of flesh  — nothing has been worth this.

A crack of old bone that was carved eras ago with old magic.

Something akin to a cry finally spilled out of Rahgot’s vile throat.

Curling around his steady hands that were stained of lukewarm blood, Elyden pulled.

Hey, I love your blog and Lichen is freaking adorable😭❤️

So, I’ll probably never have a Mudi bc 1. I live in the US, and they’re pretty much nonexistent here, and 2. I’m trying to do rescues only. But! I really love these little guys, and I’m super curious: how much do they actually shed? Also, I’ve read in a lot of places that they’re one of those breeds that always needs a job; has that been true in your experience with Lichen?

hi!!! first off thank you :)) she's very cute i agree!

so, i also live in the US. there are a few good breeders here in the states - off the top of my head, depending on where you're located, there is a breeder in Texas, 2 in North Carolina i think, one in the California area (not sure exactly where), there might be some more that i forgot but honestly they're not that hard to acquire, especially compared to other rare breeds.

but i totally understand going with a rescue, Ava is my first dog and she's a rescue too. she's been such an awesome learning experience to fine tune what i really wanted in a dog, and i ended up landing on mudi for my next breed (and i absolutely LOVE them.)

as far as shedding goes, she definitely sheds less than Ava (husky mix, so she sheds a LOT). but the areas around her crate and bed usually have quite a bit of hair around them and i vacuum weekly. so she does shed but it's not like an obnoxious amount for me personally

i don't really think she NEEDS a job... she just loves me and wants to do everything with me. mudis in general are super attached to their people and are great companions for whatever activities they enjoy together. Lichen has an excellent off-switch so for example, i was sick all last week and Lichen was bored but she just napped/hung out with me and was happy to entertain herself with her toys. she's actually never gotten destructive or chewed anything outside of toys, aside from when she was like 8wks and chewed the flooring in her xpen lol. i will say it depends a lot on the lines as some mudi are very high energy and high drive and will not be satisfied in a low energy household. they can also tend to get very vocal when they're bored or understimulated which doesn't sound like a fun time to me. thankfully Lichen is very quiet, i was very careful about her parents not being obnoxious barkers and i've worked with her since she was 8 wks to have a "quiet" cue.

Whats the difference between lichen, moss, mould and mushrooms if they're all fungus? Aren't they all the same sorta thing?

so, interestingly, all of these groups are very different !! instead of naming the differences, let me quickly explain what exactly these organisms are.

lichen :

lichens are symbiotic organisms, meaning they are in themselves the product of a relationship between different organisms. to simplify it, lichens are big part fungus, & smaller part algae (protista) or cyanobacteria (monera). these different forms of life together create lichen, which grows on trees, rocks, leaves, mosses & sometimes other lichens !! to read more about lichens, check out @/lichenaday's blog :-)

moss :

mosses are actually not fungi at all !! they are small, flowerless plants. they grow on trees & in soil. :-)

mould :

mould is a type of structure that fungi can form - it is entirely fungal. it reproduces through airborne spores :-) there are many different types of mould ; some are toxic, some are used medicinally, & some are saprotrophs. (note : slime moulds & water moulds are unrelated to fungal moulds !!)

mushrooms :

so, lots of people think mushrooms are a species of fungus, but they are not. "mushroom" refers to the fruiting body of a fungus ; what a mushroom is to a fungus is comparable to what a flower is to a tree - the part that reproduces !! not all fungi produce mushrooms (e.g. moulds, which do not have fruiting bodies as the entire organism is able to release spores). there are currently only 14 000 discovered fungi that produce mushrooms !! more fungi that don't produce mushrooms include mildew, yeast & lichen.

so, yes !! they're all quite different in structure, cells & function in the ecosystem.

Can you please explain how to separate lichens can fuse together? Thank you.

lichens aren't really single organisms-- theyre multiple organisms in a symbiotic relationship, specifically a fungus and green/blue-green/(very rarely) brown algae occasionally joined by a yeast or cyanobacteria. we only saw this a couple times in that class + the individual research project i did. what i hypothesize happened was that the fungus symbiont (physica if im remembering correctly, SUPER common where i am and pretty much on every other tree) had two spores from the same asexual parent fungus land on the same substrate a few inches apart. the two of them might have came into contact with slightly different symbionts despite the short distance, rare but not impossible, meaning that two separate physica species were formed but the fungal symbionts were genetically the same, and the two fungal symbionts just fused together and made it work once they came in contact with one another because of the genetic and environmental similarities. my professor's reaction at the time was 'huh...yeah they do that sometimes'. idk if that makes any sense or honestly if it's even possible that way because lichens really ARE just soups doing things, but that's pretty much the only explanation i can think of, to tell you the truth.

do you think cad would be into making terrariums/vivariums? especially in dragonfly year? I like to imagine on low spoons days or on days when it feels best to be in bed, he sits and watches the little bugs roam around and keeps track of what plants are growing well.. he feeds them fruit and cucumber slices and watches them gather to eat, and maybe he grabs empty eggshells from the kitchen to crush up and sprinkle in for the snails :~)

oh yes definitely :'-3 i think he'd love it. and yes, in dfy for sure when he has time and money (or enough good jars and moss to start something going). eggshells for snails is nice too :-D he gets tmn to put the eggshells in a box instead of in the bin and he can use them for compost too because hes going to make a nice small garden too. i think plants and moss and things would be nice for his room because it makes the air fresher for when hes too dizzy and everything to go on a walk . also jester i think would probably get him a marimo as a gift so he gets to take care of it by refreshing its water and rolling it around when it needs. also i think he'd end up doing things like having jars he's watching interesting mould grow in. and i'd like to say he's careful with it and opens them outside if he wants a closer look and covers his mouth but its cad so he probably sniffs mould

My father has a PhD in ecology and specializes in lichens so when I saw your blog recommended to me I immediately went and showed him and he started having me search for things and he is now sitting at the desktop computer looking into the fossil lichen you posted about. Just wanted to share since he does not have a tumblr himself to tell you that you've got some cool lichens here!

Hey, there aren't a lot of lichen specialists out there so that's awesome! I hope he enjoys reading up on fossil lichens as much as I do. I am always nervous some *real* lichenologist is gonna find this blog and criticize my mistakes or my approach or something, I don't know. Imposter syndrome manifests in some weird ways. But in my experience, lichenologists are pretty cool folks. It makes sense since they spend so much time with the coolest organisms on earth.

lately I've been really thinking about my blorbo Gabriel :] he's from my nano project, bad things happen, which. i never introduced. I WILL though I still have your ask

I've really been fleshing out Gabriel's past and familg lately. he has a really toxic dynamic with his brother---his brother was highly emotionally abusive when they were kids, up until Gabriel got kicked out of the house, and it... never got better from there. Gabriel is functionally estranged from his brother and father, though he makes secret meetings with his mom because they actually got closer after his dad kicked him out (since his mother was really upset over the whole thing and threatened divorce and shit but was too sick at that point from various health issues to be able to leave Gabriel's father). so they meet for tea like twice and it's kind of one of Gabriel's highlights of, like, his entire routine

he takes his new friend jesús to see his mom at one point and jesús' whole understanding of Gabriel's emotional state and dynamics witj other people changes bc he can barely believe how like calm and quiet and kind Gabriel is around his mom (since Gabriel's whole thing is like "brash comedic cynical reckless strange" but around his mom he's very very careful). i lobve him
