’Blue morning stars’, 2022, ph Erik Gigengack Now exactly 200 years ago Franz Schubert composed the song cycle ’Die schöne Müllerin’ about a young journeyman wandering through the countryside. He falls in love with the miller's beautiful daughter. The songs move from cheerful optimism to despair and tragedy. Of course, it’s the years of romanticism. And I love it.

OK I listened to the Schöne Müllerin while cleaning the house yesterday and I think I have finally followed the story. And I like it! I like it more than the Winterreise! Stuff is happening! There's different moods!
I also like how it's such a simple story but raises so many questions:
Did the miller girl like the hunter all along? Is that why she liked green so much? Are we being played
Or is the miller boy narrator right that she was not into it at the start and the hunter just wore her down? Shouldn't he be feeling a bit bad about that? Like stand up for your girl mate
I also like the implication that the river itself orchestrated this whole situation in order to kill the miller boy. Sure. It's river spirits, that's what they do, that's why we don't follow elves into the woods
Verdict: strong catulli carmina meets elveskud energy, I love it
