HOPE NEVER FELT SO FAR FROM REACH !
There was nothing left to do except wait until the digital countdown of the podium’s dashboard reached zero.
From the beginning of the investigation to the current voting period, every passing minute was yet another tribulation to endure and further fostered a formidable sense of fear – the likes of which he’d never known during the killing game. Nothing had prepared him for the stomach-turning sight in the hydraulic press or the crippling distress that overtook him when the subsequent body discovery announcement failed to summon one student in particular. The day prior had been filled with heartfelt promises and their idealistic ambitions beyond the academy’s walls, blissful murmurs and tender touches no longer making any effort to conceal their partiality for each other. Not once had there been any portent of the horror that awaited Naegi during the following morning, and that was what scared him most.
The existing evidence didn’t paint a clear picture of what happened and the truth only became even more enigmatic when the Exisal entered the courtroom. Hearing Momota’s voice first come out of the Exisal had been a shock to everyone in the courtroom but little had prepared him for the sound of Ouma’s voice as well. The reaction had been so visceral, his heartbeat racing so fast that he thought it might burst and mouth becoming so dry that he could only weakly speak his rival’s name. Every new development carried the risk of emotional whiplash, torn between his tenacious desire to unearth the truth and a selfish wish to see Ouma alive again. Shaking hands could only be steadied by occupying themselves on either side of his podium when Harukawa admitted that an attempt had been made on Ouma’s life, armed with poisoned arrows and unadulterated hostility. Overwhelming relief had washed over him when she went on to admit that she’d seen Ouma drink the antidote intended for Momota. The trial had been taxing to endure but with every expectant glance made in the Exisal’s direction, Naegi became emboldened by his inner resolve to see the case through to its end --- not unlike any of the other trials that had preceded it.
Rebuttals and rational counterarguments were made in Ouma’s name, cried out with vigour and assertiveness that had been repurposed from his earlier sense of dread. The sequence of events was stripped apart, diligently deconstructed and examined alongside the other members of the class. In spite of the ambiguity and multiple layers to the case’s complex narrative, however, the blurred motivations of the Exisal’s pilot gradually developed and gained greater clarity. Monokuma had no way of knowing the culprit’s identity with absolute certainty and it was with that revelation did Naegi finally understand the crux of the case ---- the same point in which the decision was made to pledge his own faith towards the culprit’s apparent plan. Regardless of Ouma’s role in the case, whether he was in the Exisal or not, all he knew was that the integrity of the impossible case had to be preserved and he had to be complicit in its proceedings.
No closing argument was made, not one that provided any additional lucidity for the others or Monokuma. The opportunity was squandered and when Naegi was called on for his final conclusions, a glowing testimony of Ouma was given that underscored the supreme leader’s importance and his admiration for the other’s strengths. He passionately spoke of how meaningful Ouma’s presence was, how much of an asset Ouma had been during past trials and how lucky he was to have known the supreme leader. There was no well-constructed rationale or any pertinent information about the case itself, only a long-winded monologue about his rival’s positive attributes before he was eventually written off as biased and unhelpful. Now, with the case at a stalemate, the voting time began and the seconds trickled away.
Several glances had been exchanged amongst his classmates but Naegi quietly shook his head at their pointed looks towards their podiums, a silent plea to dissuade them from voting and maintain the air of uncertainty that had been so carefully crafted. Nervousness was smothered beneath confidence, exhibited at the forefront to covey his conviction in hopes that the others would feel the same way. There was still a risk that he was wrong or Monokuma knew more than he was letting on. Although he was not one to depend on his appointed talent for any particular outcome, Naegi made an exception and privately begged for fortune’s good favour in one last bid to secure their success --- for the sake of his classmates and for Ouma’s sake. The final few seconds of the countdown was spent looking at the tinted glass of the Exisal, hardened stare becoming soft as they held on whomever was at the controls. A painful pang surged in his chest at the thought of the two possibilities before the voting period ran its course and concluded with the familiar tune. It was over.
There were no votes, and no verdict from Monokuma. The impossible case remained unsolved and the killing game had reached an impasse. Both Ouma and Momota had succeeded but the question remained as to whom was still alive to savour the victory. The Exisal’s pilot was safe and as the cockpit unlocked to open, Naegi took a hesitant step towards the machine’s imposing stature. As much as he tried to bridle his expectations, the final reveal was too overwhelming of a moment to calmly tolerate. Emotions ran high and Naegi’s reaction was just as strong as it’d been at the beginning of the trial, if not stronger.
❝ K-Kokichi ! ❞
Deaf and blind to all else, hurried footsteps closed the distance between them and arms wrapped tightly around Ouma’s form. The force of the hug pulled his counterpart against him without giving the other much say otherwise, nearly lifting Ouma off the ground as Naegi buried his face against violet-hued hair and surrendered himself to all that emotions that struck him in the wake of their reunion. After the extended absence and his mind frequently drifting to the worst possible scenario, it felt surreal to feel Ouma in his arms again but he still cherished it as a miracle. He didn’t want to let go. He feared that if he did, Ouma would disappear once more and leave him nothing but empty air. He couldn’t let that happen, not again.
Never again.
With a shaky breath did he pull back from their embrace to look at Ouma directly, tears of happiness flowing freely and dampening his cheeks as hazel eyes unwaveringly held onto their counterparts. No effort was made to wipe them clean from his face but there was no need to, not when his rival was willing to take care of them himself. Ouma leaned in to gently kiss them away and Naegi let him, his hands moving to frame the supreme leader’s face and tenderly thumb along the sides. Impatience conquered him in the end as Ouma’s head was maneuvered towards his, their lips fervently pressing together in a torrid kiss that channeled all the pent-up sentiments endured throughout the trial. New tears could be felt at the edges of his eyes but he paid them no mind. All he cared to know was Ouma --- the taste, the touch, sight, the sound, the smell, and the taste; in that moment, all he needed to feel was Ouma there with him and nothing else.
❝ I thought that I lost you. I couldn’t … I didn’t want to think about it. You should have told me ---- something, anything. I wanted to believe it was you in that Exisal. I wanted to believe it but I didn’t know. ❞
Words were clumsily spoken on the cusp of a breath, voiced only when lungs burned with the need for air and forced them apart. Ouma’s justification for not telling him about the plan was surely logical, likely founded on an entirely understandable form of reasoning but a spark of irrational anger alighted within him regardless. In their close proximity, eyes flickered over the other’s features to appreciate every detail and commit them all to memory. The close call had been nearly unbearable but as their foreheads pressed together and the growing lump in his throat was swallowed down, Naegi finally felt solace from the realization that Ouma was still with him a little longer.
❝ I’m glad your plan worked and I couldn’t be more thankful that it did but please .. don’t ever do something like that again, okay ? You can’t do that to me again. ❞

❝ Is Ouma-kun... sure about this? Gonta no want friends to hate Gonta or Ouma-kun... ❞ Gonta asked, nervously holding the bug box that used to be at his side in his large hands, in front of himself, it contains a butterfly inside it, ❝ Gonta knows human friends no like bug friends... but Gonta no want force friends to like them...❞ Yeah, after the first insect meet and greet did not go well, Gonta wanted to retry, this time with one single bug; a butterfly. He had with him a sugar-water solution to make sure the freshly hatched butterfly got her nutrients.
❝ Last time Ouma-kun passed out ... or left. Ouma should promise not to leave. Ouma need like bugs too! ❞

Hot takes (no longer accepting!)
These might be a bit short (I’m a little tired from working on some other things) but I hope they’ll suffice! Here’s two DR hot takes.
1. Most of the fandom ignores Sakura Ogami purely because she doesn’t follow either the cute moe girl aesthetic or the hot and sexy girl aesthetic. She’s literally called an ogre in the game and intimidates everyone, and yet her backstory and the contrast between her personality and her appearance/talent is some of the best writing in DR: THH. Her specific trial was also one of the best written in the entire game, too. When I look at other games that had characters who met similar fates to Sakura’s, I tend to find them lacking in comparison to how Sakura’s fate was revealed. Maybe that’s the fault of the writers, but it is what it is.
Though in a similar vein, even the male characters who are presented as larger/plus sized are done so to comedic and/or detrimental effect. They aren’t often seen as attractive physically, mentally, or emotionally, and that really pisses me off about this franchise (and most media in general, but still). As much as I’d like to have a fat, female-presenting character in the DR franchise I worry that such a character would be constantly mocked for her appearance or made out to be some sort of deviant.
If the character is conventionally pretty or cute, or easily shippable, the fandom loves them. If not, they’re pretty much glossed over. It’s shitty.
2. Kazuichi Souda is dragged quite often for how he regards Sonia Nevermind, but despite how awful he is to her, she’s pretty damn rude to him right back. It’s easily overlooked that while he’s gross towards her and seemingly doesn’t understand her at all, Sonia in turn doesn’t really understand him, either. Yes, she should tell him ‘no’ if she’s not interested. But yelling at him and calling him a stalker? That’s not really conducive to him backing off, if the later trials in DR 2 are any indication. And not that his behavior is, in any way, correct, but Kaz has had quite a bit of trauma and challenges growing up and, despite everything else he now has to contend with, he has to sort out his hormones and be a teenager too.
He needed a gentle and understanding “I don’t like you, I’m not going to like you in that way, please stop hitting on me” from Sonia that the game never delivered upon. Instead, he idolizes her as perfection and Sonia, going by what she’s learned as a princess, speaks to him in a firm, authoritative tone that does no good in dissuading him because it’s not the right words delivered the right way. Neither of them really understand each other at all.
So, both characters are part of the unhealthy dynamic they’ve created between them and I wish more people understood that. But on the upside, I really appreciated at the end of the game when both characters pretty much promised to try to be better people. Sonia especially vows to try and be nicer to him and Kazuichi, in turn, has found real friends who accept him for who he is and thus doesn’t need to lean into this fantasy he has of Sonia to keep him motivated and fulfilled.
It’s also why that if I write Kazuichi/Sonia as a ship, it would likely be post-DR2 or in a Non-Despair AU when they’re both well out of high school. They both have some growing and evolving to do that they just can’t accomplish in the DR2 game or at Hope’s Peak Academy.

“How about a kiss?” :P
ACCEPTING 𖥔 FOUR WORD PHRASES.
Why he let Kokichi venture with him around the academy in search for solitude , he’d never know. A few tricks were expected , and Saihara’s reaction were certainly a treat for the liar. But for once , today , he was oddly too quiet. Not too many tricks were played this evening. If he had to be honest , it felt out of the ordinary , out of their usual routine. Dropping his book , the one he was very much invested in , Saihara shot Kokichi a very shocked and embarrassed look. “ H - Here ? I - In the library ! ? ” Yes , here ! In the library ! Out in the open ! They’ve been around each other for this long , Kokichi knew that Saihara was easily embarrassed in vulnerable places. He knew he knew. Jerk. That mischievous grin on the trickster’s face along with that serious look in his eyes. And yet again at times like this , Saihara couldn’t entirely read him. Whether he was joking or not. Certain people got the better of Saihara’s intuition , and Kokichi was at the top of that list of people. Was this Kokichi’s way of breaking the silence of their evening ? Somehow breaking the ice with a flirtatious prank ? Did he plan to make Saihara freak out like this ?
A collection of sweat droplets trickle down the detective’s cheek , cheeks that were flushed with red. The page he remained on in the book he dropped was the least of his worries now ( even though he was really invested in the story ). “ I . . I can’t ! ” He raised his voice , going against his typical ‘ SHH ! QUIET IN THE LIBRARY ! ’ rule. “ It’s too out in the open here . . ! ” Given the library was one of the most uninhabited places in the academy , he couldn’t help but feel embarrassed out here. Truly no one really came in here often , with no real studies to study during a killing game , it was mostly secluded and collecting dust just like the books that lied within it. “ Why is the boldest thing you’ve said all day something meant to embarrass me ? ”

@liedux : [ humiliation ] your muse humiliating mine, re: name-calling and verbal abuse.
STUPID. USELESS. PATHETIC. NEEDY. WASTE OF SPACE. TALENTLESS. ASS KISSER. each word spit by the other seems to have an unintended effect on the recipient ---------- you see , these were things nagito already knew. none of it was surprising ; just checks in boxes already floating around his mind. nagito already knows this is how they all see him. HE ACCEPTS THIS --- WELCOMES IT , EVEN. each word is correct --- he has no right speaking to any of them or breathing the same air. but he’s here , && there’s so very little he can do about that.
STILL ------ each word doesn’t bring sadness or pain. no , it’s something else entirely. it brings a dryness to his mouth & a hazy glaze to his pale green eyes. he can’t explain it exactly --- never felt it as far as he can recall. ❛ IS THAT ALL YOU’VE GOT ? ❜ he muses , stepping over to the other in a way that might be deemed menacing , considering there’s this lazy , unfocused look on his face.
❛ DIG DEEPER. find something . . . BETTER. ❜ he grins wider , stepping toward him until kokichi is pinned against the nearest wall , nagito’s hand pressing flat against the wall beside his head. ❛ YOU’VE BARELY CUT THE SURFACE . . . i know you can do better. ❜ his voice is silky ---- tempting.
instead of staying in the position of power , he sinks down , sitting on his knees instead. ❛ c’mon. say it like you mean it. ❜

@liedux asked: "hey, makoto!! do you want a present?" before makoto can say anything in response, kokichi holds out, a yoda rubber duck. not a rubber yoda, not a rubber duck, but some fucked up amalgamation of Yoda and a duck in rubber form. "here!" // ouma is cursed on main
“AH— Kokichi, what is i-” Words immediately cut off as the other presents him with...something. Makoto’s brows furrow with confusion as he takes it, turning it in his hands— it...looks like a rubber duck?! But not a normal one, that’s for sure.
“Oh, uh...” He...doesn’t know what to SAY to this. But then again, he doesn’t want to be rude, either. “..Thanks? It’s... I’ve never seen anything like it!”

❛ SORRY , BUT NO ------- i really do apologize for existing. ❜ soft laughter escapes his lips as he stares ahead of himself at nothing for just a few seconds too long. then , soft eyes flicker over to the other. ❛ it’s what i’m good at -------- being honest with people. sometimes i’m too honest. BUT I WOULD NEVER LIE ABOUT BEING SORRY I WAS BORN. how silly would that be . . . ? ❜ he snorts lightly at the very notion. ❛ compared to people will real talent , i SHOULD be sorry for taking up space. i mean , next to you , what am i really good for ? YOU’RE SO GOOD AT LYING THAT I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S REAL ANYMORE. what’s more hopeful than never being able to anticipate what’s coming next with you ? NO ONE CARES ABOUT KOKICHI OUMA, NOT LIKE HE DOES !
❝ never. ❞
as though inherently summoned by reflex was the word whispered into the dark, hazel eyes boring into their purple counterparts with undeterred determination in spite of the room’s dim lighting. no mind was paid to the shadows concealing the precise details of his partner’s expression as they sat face-to-face on the bed, ouma’s legs loosely situated on either side of his waist while naegi’s embrace around ouma’s lower back offered its own additional support. in the wake of the supreme leader’s plea did a hand trail upwards and over the intricate cross-stitching of his former rival’s outfit, higher and higher until fingers cradled the base of ouma’s skull and pulled them closer together ----- a full-bodied hug that silently communicated its eternal support, a tangible tribute to his undying fidelity.
although they’d both emerged with their lives after the proceedings of the final trial, occasionally did naegi wonder if a piece of ouma had been left behind in the courtroom ---- a part of him that had wanted to leave the academy with the others, a part of him that would’ve cast the final vote against the mastermind to vanquish the killing game in a blaze of glory. in moments like the present, naegi’s thoughts often turned to his private hypothesis’ likelihood but never were his doubts voiced; instead, only soothing murmurs of comfort and tender touches were provided as a remedy to his partner’s disconcertion. in spite of the supreme leader’s fighting spirit and outspoken love towards him, bouts of vulnerability were expected and welcomed with open arms. love was being there at one’s lowest points, and their love reigned over all else.
a hum warbled low in the back of his throat as naegi’s head angled inwards and towards the side of ouma’s neck, nosing against the skin and pressing a kiss against its pulse point. in the dark, the purple discolouration and evidence of fierce bitemarks from earlier evenings were invisible to the eye. in the dark, they were exactly the same as they were before naegi’s identity as the mastermind came to light.
❝ i won’t ------ i couldn’t abandon you. there’s nothing i want more than to be there for you when you need me most, make sure you get the appreciation you deserve. i’d do anything for you, kokichi. ❞
vows flowed freely just shy of the supreme leader’s ear, ensuring that every pledge had enough time to linger in the silence as fingers gently carded through ouma’s hair from the back and smoothed over the stray strands. at his current vantage point, naegi’s stare could not scrutinize or bear witness to his counterpart’s reaction but with no small amount of confidence did he assume that the oaths of devotion had starved off ouma’s insecurity for the time being --- at least, for a few weeks more. as much as it made his heart bleed to see ouma in such turmoil, he knew better than to assume that it would never happen again; until then, however, they could seize the day and carve out a future together. they had each other, and that was enough.
❝ you’re my hope, and i’ll never let you go. ❞

☾ @liedux has asked : ☽
( TOUCH ) “accidentally” briefly touching mine. (example: brief hand touch, knee under the table) ( for miu 👉👈 )
☾ ᴍɪᴜ ɪʀᴜᴍᴀ . ☽
he didn’t mean to touch her . he couldn’t have . was sure she was imagining the way his hand had lingered on her own for just a second longer than it needed to . because why would he do that ? it wouldn’t make any sense . unless — he did it to mess with her .
that had to be it . he talked about being disgusted by her often enough that the thought of him ever intentionally touching her seemed exceedingly unlikely . it was an accident . that was all it was . so why were her cheeks growing warm ? why had her heart started to beat faster all of the sudden ? it was nothing . could only hope that he wouldn’t see just how much his touch had managed to fluster her .
in fact , why had his touch managed to fluster her in the first place ? is she just that desperate ? it wasn’t as if she came into contact with actual people often at all , so maybe — it was only that . she was just touch - starved . she’d feel like this if it had been anyone , not just him . && of course she knew that was still incredibly pathetic , but at least it was marginally better than it being because of only him — the one who constantly publicly humiliated her && called her horrible things && yet somehow managed to feed into every one of her darkest desires .

@liedux said: "how could people still be so ignorant?"
A Discovery of Witches prompts
From her spot, sitting on a bench near the school fountain with a bottle of milk tea in her hands, Sonia Nevermind nodded her head vigorously. It was in her nature to take a stand against the willfully ignorant and uninformed, those who held onto needless prejudices that, in the long run, benefited no one. Politically, they were causes she wanted to address directly once she finished her schooling at Hope’s Peak and university elsewhere and returned home to Novoselic to work full-time as a member of the Royal Family and heir to the throne.
But for now, she’d have to stamp out the small-minded in smaller ways. Artistic, niche, and mostly misunderstood ways.
“To this day I’ve yet to understand it!” She agreed, the milk tea half-drunk in the bottle but now all but forgotten clenched in the Ultimate Princess’ pale fist. “But it is narrow-minded to simply write off the genre of horror as low-brow and not worth accolades in writing, in acting, in directing. So often horror films are acknowledged for special effects makeup and horror novels are celebrated in their own genre for awards and acclaim, but not on a more widespread scale. For every honor that The Exorcist or Silence of the Lambs has been given, so many other excellent feats of filmmaking and storytelling have gone ignored, with their content labeled as too profane, too graphic, to be considered art worthy of enjoyment.”
She paused her tirade for a moment, finally reminded of the drink in her hands and the fellow Main Course student in her vicinity that had spurred her into such a frenzy. With a small huff, of relief to get such strong feelings off her chest and out into the open (an opportunity she never truly had at home. It was exhilarating!), she took a sip of her tea before replacing the cap on the bottle. She smiled to Kokichi, far more brilliantly than she’d had before and she’d let the surrounding trees and sparkling fountain have a piece of her mind about what she truly thought of how one of her favorite art forms was so disrespected most of the time.
“Though I believe that outside of Japan, even the likes of anime and manga struggle to be respected as meaningful forms of entertainment and are often regarded as unsophisticated. It is fortunate, then, that Novoselic doesn’t agree with such an assessment.”
Another pause, this time with a curious look in Kokichi’s direction. She hadn’t known her underclassman to remain silent for too long, not when he could offer some sort of cheeky commentary on any situation that befell him. For Sonia, this turn of events was far more strange than her ability to let go of a little of her composure and well and truly vent.
“I’m sorry, Ouma-san,” She apologized, “What were you referring to again? I feel very foolish and rude now, interrupting you with my own problems.”

@liedux asked: 👫 ( forrrr tsumugi if you want ofc! ) / send 👫 & I’ll write four headcanons i have about our muse’s relationship
at first tsumugi found ouma a bit annoying just because of all the questions being thrown at her about her talent and whatnot but she grows to actually like him asking her them
tsumugi in turn is a lot more patient when it comes to how ouma can be at times (re: when he says certain things or does certain things) since she understands him a bit better from them talking to each other so much
physical affection? tsumugi absolutely doesn’t mind if ouma just leans against her or walks a little bit closer to her or anything like that!
tsumugi will absolutely just like. if she notices a hole or something wrong with whatever ouma is wearing she’ll offer to patch it up. she’s thought about offering to design something for him before but she’s not sure how to ask for that or if ouma would even like that.
