nice ask week 💖
what is something you're looking forward to this year?
A big thing I'm looking forward to is the fact that I'm on sabbatical this spring semester, which means I'm not teaching (and no service like committees and such). I'll be focusing on research and hopefully getting a lot of languishing projects wrapped up, which is exciting.
ALSO the fact that I won't be teaching should mean I have a lot more time and energy for writing non-scientific stuff too, i.e., I am also looking forward to writing LOADS of fanfic on sabbatical. I'm certain that's what the provost intended when they approved my sabbatical request. 😂
Thanks for the nice ask!!

PTSD + auDHD = hypervigilance that I cannot control but need to deal with, feel, and accept lest I spiral into catastrophic self-judgement and dissociation because I think others are judging me.
You know how when you've been traumatized and/or you are highly sensitive due to autism and ADHD... that you're highly sensitive to changes in body language, tone, facial expressions, and mannerisms from other people?
The hypervigilance causes me to low-key panic. And then high-key panic.
Today: just had a meeting with my boss, and I honestly don't know if she believes me. I do think she is a kind and supportive individual (and a brilliant scientist), but I've been working on a project (coding it nearly all by myself for the past few months) where I'm now running into issues that are completely out of my scope as a biostatistician. These issues have everything to do with how the thing is hosted on the web and nothing to do with the code I've written. (I literally have not been trained in this)
I think she's disappointed.
I am as well.
I have a lot of opinions that I can't share publicly.
I do love my workplace in the sense of... the research we do is extremely important and life-saving.

Academia is really hard for my neurotype, in my opinion.

one thing i need to start living by is “become the thing that you want” if i want friends who throw themed parties maybe i should start throwing those parties. if i want someone who writes me love letters maybe i should start writing letters for the people i love. if i want to hang out at museums and pretty cafes maybe i should invite my friends to these places. and maybe even then i won’t find the kind of people i want to be around. but then i would have become the exact person i want to be around. and maybe that’s good enough.

I just wrote a very long rant and deleted it again but!! if any of you EVER have even a tiny bit of imposter syndrome when it comes to academic writing I am very happy to inform you that you absolutely do not need any of that, because as I've witnessed countless times by now, even some professors (especially professors) do not know how to use citation software but will also refuse to put any bibliographic information into the WIP document, and instead rely on their asistant's psychic powers to figure out what needs to go into the bibliography of their texts.
