A Beginner’s Guide to Managing Pain Through Mindfulness - LifeSource By David Knaak
A Beginner’s Guide to Managing Pain Through Mindfulness – LifeSource By David Knaak
For most people, pain can be part of daily life. Pain expresses itself and manifests physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. Those who live with pain, look for ways to manage it throughout the day — consciously or subconsciously. Emotional pain can be brought on by stressful situations, from the holidays to a relational situation. While physical pain can be brought on by Parkinson’s…

Owie did I tell you about my dream where I wondered through a desert turning everything around me into a vast, deep void until I wandered through a crack in the wall into another dimension where I collapsed in the center of an ancient town. Then water began gushing from my mouth, and my limp body became the lifesource for an entire society of forgotten people until I was awoken by a man trying to kick me out of town and to justify my place as the fountain in the center of the city I had to homoerotically dance with the woman mayor to Lovefool?

ELEMENTAL PROWESS
Tumblr media
luka & ice
if water is a lifesource, ice is trapping it, condensing it to where it can be transported across long distances. it is holding life in your hands and gifting it to the world.
luka is ice in the sense of "i give to you my heart, don't hurt yourself on the coldness it carries".
ice is where everything is preserved, where everything stays exactly where it was at the time that it was supposed to. if caught appropriately, the right person can find the best things... or the worst person can find their demise. or in reverse.
ice is a potential end, but it is also a potential beginning. it is what we imagine happens when we take off protection out in space, so cold that it instantly freezes us, because there is nothing to breathe.
ice is danger. ice is threatening. ice is hopelessness.
but in the same vein, ice must care. it must care enough, at least, to say "do not progress further". we are the ones that do not listen, and reach out regardless.
Tumblr media
aryin & lightning
lightning, in some cultures, is considered to be the bridge between the heavens and the earth, a moment when the two finally meet, which is why the sound we hear is so wildly destructive, called thunder.
lightning, also in some other cultures, is considered to be a balancing of forces in the atmosphere, a release of pressure in the air to settle everything back to center once again so that things are calm once more.
lightning is considered by people to be the symbol that people give to themselves to be in and out of situations, fast, quick, like a lightning bolt, devastating, powerful, but respected.
as such, aryin's presence being called electrifying would not be too far from the truth. they, in and of themselves, are much like lightning. they are in and out of situations in a flash, but they always leave devastation in their wake, like a bolt of lightning, often leaving a grimace of power behind them. there, and then not, never grasped.
similarly, aryin is the closest to understanding the false gods that any of the keykids have come. because aryin has walked the line of death and come back. has not just walked it, but understood that it was their time, even if they didn't want to go, and then was RIPPED from the afterlife with an unearthly gracelessness because the kids did not want to let them go yet not yet so they understand the fear of death unlike any other.
Tumblr media
zack & wind
wind is considered ever flowing, ever free, uncapturable. i beg to differ.
wind is air, wind is the breath in your lungs, wind is reactant before a flame. it is not only capturable, it is not only weighted, but it HEAVY and it is EVERYWHERE.
despite this, wind is easy going. wind is a presence that we don't think about until it brushes past us, laughing so carefree, giggling past our hair and brushing through the spaces of our open hands. wind is gentle in its heaviness.
zack is wind in the sense of "i shiver in the beauty of noticing what i can only observe from my place above it all". zack is wind in the sense of "i sigh, and disturb your rest, and i pull away just the same in apology". zack is the anxiety of a summer storm and the smile of a spring breeze.

had the strangest dream that i was in a cult of some kind that was fully content on like staying around or near a lifesource/core that would add a layer of like crysalis or something to whoever was lying near or directly under it. It was like something we found deep underground jouney to the center of the earth style, it was bizarre man. all i remember is that i was fully convinced that this guy i was laying with was like the love of my life and he believed i was his too like it's weird i'd never been that at peace in a dream before.

A Place To Call Home
Word Count: 1557
Pairings: Lucifer Morningstar x Reader
Warnings: angst, possible trigger, fluff
A/N: Request from anonymous, And thank you all so much for being so supportive, screw the haters, you guys are amazing and I truly couldn't ask for better readers!
Tag list and Request are open!
Summary: He seldom came to this part of the city, where the people who resided would sooner rob him then help him. But he had a favor to collect on. While he waited to cross the street, he notices a small crowd of people and there you are at the center, torn clothes, dirty, and giving away all the money you had just collected from the crowd who had bought your art. He can't help but be curious and you soon find a persistent devil tailing after you. Wondering why you gave everything when it was clear you had nothing.
..................................................................................
Lucifer sighed as he stood impatiently on the sidewalk. This light always seemed to take so long to change, with how old it looked he was surprised it even functioned at all anymore. He'd have crossed the street already, light be damned, if he didn't think someone might run him over. He wouldn't put it past anyone in this part of the city. Most watched him like greedy vultures, waiting for his demise, so they could swoop in and collect from his misery.
A small crowd of people gathered around someone who was sitting on a blanket. He didn't think much of it, they'd been there a while. He turned his attention back to the light, just in time to see it flicker before fizzing out all together.
"Oh bloody hell."
Lucifer glared at the wretched thing, looking both ways to see if he could safely cross. He wouldn't even be here if the Detective hadn't asked him to use one of his favors. He was beginning to regret agreeing. He'd been seconds from stepping off the broken concrete, and onto the street when he threw one last glance over his shoulder. The crowd had dispersed, and he saw the person at the center was now gathering their blanket. He watched you closely as you walked a few feet down, handing the cup of money in your hand to an elderly woman.
The two of you seemed to argue for a moment, but ultimately it seemed you won and you draped the worn blanket you carried over her shoulders. Lucifer watched you walk away curiously before changing his direction. He approached the older woman with a kind smile.
"Excuse me, do you know who that was?" He asked politely.
She regarded him closely for a moment, almost suspiciously.
"I do. What's it to you?"
Lucifer smiled at the woman's attempt to be intimidating.
"I simply wish to ask her a few things is all."
He held his hands up, trying to show her he meant no harm to her or you.
"Her name is Y/N, she lives not far from here."
"And does she do that often? Give her money away like that?"
The woman shrugged, peering into the cup you'd given her.
"Yes, sometimes to me, sometimes to other people, I always tell that girl not to worry about me. She's worse off than I am. I've got my coat for the winter, but she insists on giving away her stuff. Her hard-earned money, she's talented, if her situation was different she'd have made a name for herself by now."
Lucifer was even more intrigued now, and he glanced down the street.
"There's a soup kitchen close by, poor funding but it provides at least three meals a week. Hardly anything, but it's enough to keep some skin on her bones."
Lucifer frowned a little at that, and the elderly lady began to gather her stuff.
"It's the alley by the old deli, you can't miss it, she's draped this old blue tarp over a few crates. Bit rough, but it gets the job done."
Lucifer thanked the woman before going on his way. He looked around the area, searching for the place she had described. He found you, placing an unused trashed bag over a hole in your tarp. You didn't notice him lingering as you taped the bag down.
"Not exactly a five-star hotel is it?"
You jumped at the sound of his voice, turning to face him with unease. Lucifer took a step into the alley, making you take one back.
"Maybe not, but it does the trick."
He watched you shiver, saw the goosebumps on your skin as you stood there.
"I don't have any drawings left to sell if that's why you're here."
Lucifer looked around the place you called home.
"You don't have much of anything by the looks of it." He hummed.
Your unease was gone, replaced instead by annoyance and you crossed your arms.
"It's better than what I had before... where I was before."
Lucifer frowned, tilting his head.
"Anyway, if you're just here to comment on my living situation than kindly fuck off."
Your words were bitter, a stark contrast to the actions you had displayed earlier. Lucifer walked closer to you, but you didn't seem as hesitant this time.
"I apologize that was rather rude of me, I assure you that isn't why I'm here."
"Then why are you?" You looked at him skeptically, like you didn't trust his words.
"I suppose your act of selflessness quipped my curiosity so, I've come to ask you why."
You looked at him confused and a little lost, and he continued, further explaining himself.
"You gave that woman all the money you made, from those drawings I'm assuming you spent hours making. Then you gave her your blanket, which by the looks of things was your only source of warmth for the winter, despite how tattered the thin fabric was. I simply wish to know why that is. Why share everything when you have nothing to give?"
You stared at him a moment, studying him as you tried to gauge if maybe he had ulterior motive beyond his question. However, it seemed he really was just curious.
"Her name is Edrsia, she's almost seventy-years-old. She's not on the streets by choice, her son took everything she had and pawned it off. Her husband passed years before, and she couldn't afford even a shoe box size apartment. She helped me, when I first started living on the streets. So, I give her what I can, whether I can spare it or not."
You expected him to be satisfied with your answer, maybe even leave you alone, but your response seemed to have the opposite effect.
"Yes but why? From what I can tell you're barely making it yourself. I simply cannot fathom why you'd give up what little you do have. Just because she helped you once, that hardly means you should risk your own well-being to return such a small act."
You smiled a little, offering a small shrug.
"I guess because it's just the human thing to do. I don't need a good reason to help someone, just a reason."
Lucifer pondered over your answer silently and you glanced back towards your makeshift tent.
"It's supposed to rain tonight, I really should-"
"Would you like a place to stay for a while?"
You almost tripped over yourself when you heard that.
"What?"
"Not for free of course, you see I rather like your art, and my bar could use a bit of...artistic flare."
You suspicion didn't go unnoticed by the handsome man, and he gave you a charming smile.
"The choice is yours, I'm merely offering you a warm place and a small job."
You mulled it over, he didn't come off as the type of person to play a joke this cruel. Yet, you suspected he had some underlining goal to this.
"What do you get out of this?"
Lucifer grinned, your question making him like you all the more.
"It's been my experience that humans can be rather selfish creatures, very few offer any real selflessness. If nothing else you can at least teach me a bit more about this side of humanity."
The deal seemed almost too good to be true, and a part of you wanted to refuse. But your shaking hands and the numbness in your limbs told you that you couldn't afford to be stubborn, not unless you wanted to freeze to death.
"Okay."
"Marvelous! Then if we have a deal-"
You shook your head, not moving to shake his outstretched hand.
"Not yet. I'm only agreeing if you help Edrsia, she doesn't have good health, she can't survive another year out here."
Lucifer once again seemed surprised, but he nodded regardless.
"Consider it done, now do we have a deal?"
This time you did shake his hand, and let out a yelp when he tugged on your arm pulling you to his side. He wrapped an arm around your shoulders, leading you down the street.
"Goodness you're chilled to the bone darling, here take this."
Lucifer released you to remove his jacket, but you shook your head looking almost ashamed.
"I live on the streets, showers aren't a luxury I can afford."
He ignored your protest draping the material over your shoulders, despite your words you quickly pulled it tighter around you.
"I don't mind my dear, it's not your fault."
You looked up at him smiling a bit.
"Thank you... I never got your name."
"Oh dear how rude of me to skip introductions, my name is Lucifer Morningstar."
"It's nice to meet you Lucifer, I'm Y/N."
He raised an eyebrow, but the smile never left his lips.
"No last name?" He inquired.
"Does it matter?"
He hummed a little at your answer but didn't pry.
"I suppose not, well come on love, let's get you out of the cold."
You didn't argue when he placed a hand on your back, and you fought back grateful tears. Lucifer watched you from the corner of his eye, a soft smile on his lips, his heart swelling at the hope in your eyes.
Maybe you could teach the devil a thing or two about the better side of humanity.

Abandoned outposts were rarely so. Scavengers, squatters and the like claimed such to suit their needs. Candy was both. Her ship was running low on fuel, and as it was an older model of alternian vessels that hadn’t fully incorporated biotech into its systems yet, psionic energy would need to be found from a stored battery.
The knight had managed to find one such outpost tucked away in the corner of a mostly dead star system, drained of resources by the empire. Fortunately for her, there was the faintest bit of energy readings still stored away here somewhere, and with luck, fuel that could keep the ship going for a while. Honestly Candy wished she could swap out the psionic energy cells for a more renewable form of propulsion, but at that point she might as well get a whole new ship, and she had gotten too attached to the old girl to let her go so easily.
Security was laughable nonexistent. No drones, no automated defenses, she had simply landed in the empty training yard without even an alarm blaring. Arming herself, she began to wander to where she figured storage might be located, a warehouse tucked away in the back of the facility. Breaking in was simple enough as most of the metal within a ten mile radius had all but rusted away to nothing.
Kicking through the door, her eyes quickly adjusted to the darkness, slitted pupils expanding widely. A grin kept up her face, happy to find several power cells, still fully charged, stacked atop another. There were other supplies, but they would have to be grabbed later.
Lugging the hefty things two at a time, she began her multiple trips to and fro from her ship, storing them, then returning to grab more. It was on the third trip is when she heard the sound of a warp drive cutting through space, and another ship landing. Hand itching towards her weapon, she slowly peered around the corner of the warehouse’s entrance to find another ship, an alternian ship, had landed several meters away from hers.
The door opened to reveal three trolls and a drone stepping out, the behemoth machine clanking behind its entourage as they walked over to Candy’s own ship to inspect it. They were clad in dull grey body armor, military in nature, but were obviously highbloods by the symbols and rankings as adornments. One opened his mouth to cough before shouting a word of warning.
“Karkat-” only to be stopped by his companion whispering in his ear. “Ah, yes. Sorry. CANDY Vantas, you are under arrest for the murder of your superior officers, theft of a military vehicle, usurpation of power, and vagrancy across known empire territory. Surrender now, and your culling will be swift and painless. Any attempts to resist will prolong your judgment, and will lead to severe consequences-”
He was again interrupted by a lobbed chunk of debris lodging itself in the back of his head, Candy taking advantage of her distraction to cut into one of the other trolls. It wasn’t a fatal blow, but it was going to hamper them with a long slash across the length of their back.
Trolls were a sturdy sort, and the higher the blood the more punishment they could take, so the one who had been brained only stumbled a few steps before grimacing, turning with anger in his expression. The other two trolls had drawn pistols, aiming them at their aggressor while the drone lumbered at Candy, an unstoppable wall of menace that she was sure to not let get too close to her while she danced around being shot at.
The armor made from her lusus had proven to be a godsend, the bullets bouncing off or lodging themselves in it deep enough it did not penetrate, but the leading troll had what appeared to be a sidearm with a bit more of a kick, humming with energy. A laser of bright red shrieked through the air, easily lancing itself through her protection and causing a stinging, burning sensation that had to be ignored for now. Candy thought to try and take him out first, but the pain had bought the drone a window of opportunity the calculating machine would not let slip away.
With one fell swipe, its claws had separated her head from where it should normally be attached betwixt two shoulders. A sickening sound of meat and bone tearing filled the air, a spray of crimson red sputtering from the stump of her neck while her head rolled and bounced a few feet away like a basketball.
SO IT IS TRUE, Candy thought as she watched her own body crumple itself into a heap. YOU REALLY DO STAY ALIVE FOR A FEW MOMENTS AFTER DECAPITATION.
It was surprisingly . . . calming. Her pain centers had no nervous system to speak of to feel any pain, and it felt as if she were in some sort of fugue state, akin to what one feels like in a dream. There, but also simultaneously not at all. Hazy, drifting.
She didn’t want to die, of course. While purpose was not there, finding that purpose is what she wanted. It was infuriating to find that she had been so easily dispatched, after all she had been through. There it was. The anger. The one thing that could define who she was.
She hated it. She despised it. She loved it. She craved it. How many times had it hurt others? How many times had it pushed them away, or comforted her when she knew her place in the universe was unfair? It was her tormentor, it was her companion. It was her tool.
Reaching out through that anger, the mutant’s dissipating consciousness had one last trick she could think up before the grip of death overcame her waking mind. Fortunately for her, all of her faculties that controlled the hemomancy side of her abilities had not shut down. With all she could muster, she willed her own blood to move her body towards its missing head.
At first, it did nothing, and she despaired in the fact that perhaps this gambit had failed. But, in a split second, a twitch. The armored body arose with a jolt, scaring the other trolls, making them take steps back to distance themselves from the suddenly animated corpse. Being moved not by muscle or thought, but by its own lifesource struggling to pump through its veins, it shambled over to its head, fumbling with its grasp to clumsily stick her noggin back onto her neck, and she prayed to any god or any devil listening that her idea would work.
Just as her vision was fading, she felt it. The familiar sensation of her body healing itself. Regeneration multiplied by the thousandth degree, bones reattaching, sinew and nerves aligning. Next came the rushing pain that had been denied her thinkpan, and with that, a scream. A bellowing, agonizing scream that tore its way up through her vocal cords to fill the air. Candy’s sight went red after that.
Then nothing.
When she came to, the bright red becoming a tinge, then disappearing altogether, she was alive, yes, but now coated in teal and cobalt blood, the shatterings of a drone scattered about her. The three trolls were dead, eviscerated beyond recognition, her scythe and self slick with what remained of them. She had several more gaping wounds that slowly knitted themselves back together, but she was saddened to find the armor had been extensively damaged, as had her weapon.
Limping towards her ship, she didn’t bother to grab the remaining cells, only that she had to book it out of there as soon as possible. More military going missing would bring the eye of the empire. As she ambled towards the control room, she passed the washroom, catching a glimpse of herself in the sink mirror. A fresh, new pink scar now encircled the diameter of her neck, along with the fact there were now shocks of white in her hair where black curls had once been.

          @sasukhiha   sent,   ‘  a  hoarse  whisper,   kiss  me.  ’
uchiha  sasuke  was  immortal  to  the  mind  of  uzumaki  naruto.   it  was  a  childish  thought  for  any  shinobi  to  have;   if  anything,   naruto’s  entire   life  experience  has  only  further  validated  that  nothing  is  permanent.   but  the  more  they  evaded  death,   the  more  they  overcame  the  impossible,   the  more  naruto  entertained  the  idea  that  they  were  fated  to  survive.   he  knew  sasuke  wasn’t  invincible,   but  the  hokage  never  thought  he  would  ever  have  to  watch  him  die.
how   can   a   guy   who   can’t    even   save   one   friend...    become    hokage   ?
naruto’s  curse  was  he  would  always  survive  his  loved  ones.   hyuga  neji  is  survived  by...   lord  third  is  survived  by...   jiraiya  is  survived  by...   life  clung  to  naruto  like  clothes,   and  the  more  he  survived,   the  more  those  clothes  began  to  feel  like  chains.   it’s  why  he  couldn’t  stop  reaching  for  sasuke,   it’s  why  he  needed  his  life  to  be  worth  all  those  sacrificed  for  it.   and  even  if  he  failed,   they  would  both  fail.   naruto  watched  so  many  die  quick,   unceremonious  deaths  in  battle,   and  the  thought  of  crossing  into  the  next  life  with  his  best  friend  seemed  like  a  better  end  than  he  could  hope  for.
naruto  couldn’t  fathom  even  death  parting  him  and  sasuke.
even  with  no  medical  skill,   himself—   and  four  of  his  clones—   were  all  trying  their  hardest  they  to  keep  all  of  sasuke’s  blood  in  his  body.   they  pressed  into  his  once  porcelain  skin  until  the  dark  fabric  beneath  their  hands  became  damp,   warm,   and  sticky.   each  of  the  clones  exchanged  expressions  of  worry  and  skepticism,   differentiating  from  the  main  body,   whose  eyes  would  not  lift  from  the  sight  of  his  own  hands.   and  that’s  when  he  heard  it.
there  was  a  chance  naruto  would  have  missed  it;   it’s  hard  to  speak  when  blood  is  spilling  into  your  lungs.   a  bittersweet  taste  filled  his  mouth  while  every  muscle  in  his  body  became  taut.   in  any  other  circumstance,   there  would  be  an  aura  of  excitement  to  the  raven’s  request—   even  in  a  normal  circumstance,   it  was  more  than  an  unusual  request  to  come  from  sasuke’s  lips.
kiss   me.
not  a  single  person,   not  even  the  creatures  that  dwelled  inside  him,   understood  the  how  badly  naruto  had  wanted  to  hear  those  two  words.   kiss  me,   hold  me,   touch  me—   no  matter  how  sasuke  phrased  it,   for  him  to  want  naruto  badly  enough  to  ask  for  him  was  a  dream  that  every  fiber  of  naruto’s  body  craved.   and  yet  the  idea  of  kissing  sasuke  now  tasted  like  bile  in  his  mouth,   and  he  clenched  his  eyes  shut  and  turned  away  from  his  voice.
❛   now...   now  you  want  me  to  kiss  you?   ❜   his  voice  was  strangled,   sounding  as  if  it  was  stuck  in  his  throat,   or  like  he  couldn’t  breathe.   he  wanted  to  die.    ❛   i’ve  been  trying  to  get  you  to  come  home...   to  just  learn  to  stay  and  forgive  yourself.   i’ve  been  trying  to  kiss  you  for  months—   and  you...   ❜   a  vaguely  familiar  burn  ran  through  the  jinchuriki’s  body,   an  inferno  that  naruto  had  previously  quelled.
anger  like  this  was  unending,  unsatisfied;   it  consumed  him  until  he  felt  the  heat  reach  even  his  eyes,   turning  clear  blue  hues  a  crimson  that  rivaled  sasuke’s  sharingan  in  brilliance.   they  looked  even  brighter  behind  the  downpour  of  the  jinchuriki’s  tears,   glaring  down  at  sasuke  as  low  growls  rumbled  in  his  throat.    ❛   YOU  TOLD  ME  YOU  COULD  HANDLE  IT  !    ❜   he  snarled  down  at  the  dying  man,   tears  rolling  off  his  lips  (  and  fangs  )  onto  sasuke's  tattered  clothes.   of  course  he  was  angry  at  sasuke;   he  was  supposed  to  be  the  smart  one.   years  of  calling  naruto  useless,   loser,   idiot   because  naruto  was  impatient,   stubborn,   and  reckless  in  a  fight   only  to  end  up  being  held  together  by  the  usuratonkachi.
the  deaths  of  geniuses  are  so  pitiful.
when  the  fading  light  of  hyuga  neji  died  in  front  of  him,   naruto  remembered  the  same  taste  of  copper  in  his  mouth  while  his  brain  screamed.   WHY   WHY   WHY,   IF  YOU  CAN'T,   HOW  CAN  I?   naruto  was  a  sloppy  fighter,   even  now,   and  he  was  an  average  strategist  at  best;   sasuke  and  neji  outperformed  him  in  more  ways  than  the  village  would  ever  know,   and  yet  naruto  had  to  watch  them  both  die  in  the  end.   sasuke  didn't  like  politics,   but  maybe  that  would  have  made  him  a  better  hokage  than  the  current,   and  he  wouldn't  be  bleeding  out  in  a  deserted  cavern.   it  sent  another  jolt  of  anger  shooting  through  naruto,   a  sob  pushing  its  way  past  his  clenched  teeth.
he's   dying,   naruto.                            shut  up,   stupid  old  fox.
the  idea  of  a  last  kiss  with  sasuke  had  his  spine  bending  with  grief,   hands  pressing  harder  into  his  chest.    ❛   just  wait...   til  sakura  sees  this...   after  she  gets  you  okay,   you'll  be  lucky  to  live  one  more  day...   ❜   even  as  a  child,   naruto  would  find  ways  to  avoid  reality,   often  with  a  flash  of  his  toothy,   dopey  grin.   no  matter  how  bad  it  would  seem,   he  clung  to  reasons  to  smile  to  survive  the  worst,   but  his  mouth  wouldn't  rise  even  if  he  tried.   nothing  about  this  was  enjoyable.   it  was  pain  in  physical  form,   and  naruto  was  wrist-deep  in  it,   soaking  it  in  until  it  stained  his  fingernails.   his  new  biggest  fear.   there  wasn't  supposed  to  be  a  last  kiss  because  sasuke  was  supposed  to  be  untouchable  to  anyone  except  the  gods  and  buddha.
why  are  you  giving  up?   don't  you  want  to  stay  with  me  longer?
❛   baka...   ❜    his  voice  is  hardly  there.
he's  trying  to  say  goodbye,   boy.                you  never  even  liked  him.                                                but  you  did.
naruto  didn't  like  sasuke,   he  coveted  him,   craved  him  like  a  lifesource;   does  a  plant  like  water?    naruto  spent  so  much  of  his  adolescence  breaking  chunks  off  of  himself  for  sasuke,   trying  to  lace  their  lives  in  a  closely  woven  pattern  in  the  hopes  that  sasuke  would  be  forced  to  acknowledge  him.   if  sasuke  expressed  admiration,   naruto  wanted  it;   if  sasuke  expressed  hate,   naruto  wanted  it;   if  sasuke  expressed  love,   naruto  wanted  it.   even  as  boys,   the  uchiha  was  the  center  of  naruto's  focus,   until  he  became  the  fox's  life.   without  sasuke,   there  were  a  lot  of  gaps  in  his  world;   even  then,   when  sasuke  would  leave  for  months  at  a  time,   naruto  would  feel  the  spaces  he  would  leave.   they  were  excruciatingly  loud.
it  used  to  be  the  empty  space  that  existed  in  a  random  inn  on  boring  missions,   the  silence  that  hung  in  the  air  that  would  usually  be  filled  with  petty  banter,   the  chill  of  training  alone.   even  if  sasuke  were  to  hate  him,   naruto  still  couldn't  stand  being  away  from  the  only  constant  he's  ever  had.   now,   it  was  much  worse—   it  was  the  cold  indent  in  the  mattress,   it  was  the  ghost  of  his  scent  on  naruto's  clothes,   the  fucking  cats  that  would  show  up  on  the  back  porch  and  scream  for  hours.   naruto  wanted  to  scream  too.
listen   to   the   last   wishes   of   a   dying   man.                      why  are  you  so  bent  on  this,   kurama?      i   know   all   too   well   the   regrets  caused   by   anger.                    if   he   dies,   will   you   be   able   to   live   with               how   your   anger   kept   you   from   saying   goodbye?
it  was  like  ice  pouring  over  his  entire  body,   and  he  felt  the  color  drain  from  his  eyes  as  all  the  anger  fell  out  of  him,   replaced  with  a  suffocating  anguish.   he's  dying,   he  knows  he's  dying.   his  body  sagged,   his  head  falling  down  against  his  own  chest,   blond  locks  cascading  over  his  drying  eyes.   one  after  another,   the  clones  disappeared,   and  soon  naruto  was  leaning  back,   hands   lifting  from  sasuke's  chest.   silently,   he  moved  to  lift  sasuke's  upper  body  up,   moving  to  support  the  raven's  body  with  his  chest,   arms  trembling  as  they  wrapped  around  his  bloody  torso.
with  two  fingers,   naruto  gripped  sasuke's  chin,   tipping  his  head  back  until  naruto  could  comfortably  lean  down  and  press  his  lips  against  his  rival's.   kissing  was  a  strange  thing;   even  in  moments  of  intensity,   it  was  a  rather  delicate  form  of  intimacy.   the  idea  of  kissing  was  more  daunting  than  anything  else  for  naruto,   and  kisses  from  sasuke  usually  left  him  a  shade  of  scarlet.   with  their  mutual  disinterest  in  physical  affection,   it  wasn't  a  common  act  between  them,   but  naruto  couldn't  help  but  wish  it  had  been  as  the  taste  of  sasuke's  mouth  blended  with  blood.   this  kiss  wouldn't  be  like  the  others—   tender,   slow  even,   as  if  they  had  all  of  the  time  in  the  world.   if  they  weren't  shinobi,   and  they  met  in  a  different  life,   naruto  imagined  this  is  how  they'd  kiss  all  the  time;   they  would  come  home  from  work,   and  naruto  would  watch  sasuke  cook,   and  naruto  would  complain  about  the  cats,   and  they  would  kiss  all  the  time.
❛   i  know  a  part  of  you  thinks  you're  lucky  to  have  made  it  this  far.   ❜   his  voice  was  still  uneven  as  his  lips  parted  from  sasuke’s,   but  he  held  firm,   pushing  back  the  swelling  in  his  throat.   ❛   but  i  wanted  to  chase  after  you  for  another  thirty  years.   i  was  prepared  to,   'ttebayo.   ❜   his  voice  became  clearer,   his  arms  clutching  sasuke  against  him,   head  pressed  against  his.   ❛   i've  made  you  do  a  lot  more  than  you  probably  ever  wanted  to,   huh?   (  something  scratches  at  his  throat,   a  laugh?   )   but  in  the  next  life,   don't  think  you're  getting  a  break,   cause  you're  gonna  be  chasing  ME  for  once.   believe  it.   ❜   the  jinchuriki  pressed  his  face  into  sasuke's  hair,   hiding  both  the  grin  that  split  his  face  and  the  downpour  of  tears  that  begun  again.
there  would  never  be  another  uchiha  sasuke  again,   and  it  was  both  a  promise   and  a  tragedy.

Dethroned
The scent of burning wood—of burning flesh—followed them well into the day. Chuuya's human senses may not be sharp enough to notice it after a mile stood between them and the castle, and his mind too crowded by the task now entrusted to him by fate and Dazai's own words, but nightfall had come again, and Dazai still smelled smoke on the air. He still smelled death upon the wind, still felt starlight pierce his skin as if he were born to it instead of the moon.
The ivory band around his right wrist turned crimson before the first hours of day. He watched it fall to the ground without a word. Above their heads the blood-like arrow that Ango had carried traversed the sky, heading to Xadia, where the news of the human king's death would soothe all grieving creatures.
Chuuya did not notice. The human kept ahead of him with surprising stamina, not complaining once about their grueling pace, the dragon egg in its deerskin bag probably digging deep into his shoulders.
On Dazai's left wrist, the other band tightened.
They stopped at a clearing to make camp for the night. Dazai made way for the center of it and looked up at the sky; he let the rising moon shed its light upon him like a stream of cool water, washing away the sweat and dust of the past two days. For the first time since fleeing the castle, he filled his lungs with clean air.
"Get us some wood for the fire," Chuuya said gruffly from the shadowed side of the trees. He had put down the bag in which he kept his Primal Stone, but not the one holding the egg.
Still don't trust me, Dazai thought, amused.
"I wouldn't light a fire if I were you," Dazai replied. "We don't know who's after us."
"We don't know that anyone's after us. I doubt they noticed my absence with everything going on, and I don't think your friends have such loose tongues either."
His voice was rough for his age. He couldn't have been more than twenty human years, young even for such standards, yet he spoke with the exhaustion of lifelong soldiers. He spoke as if he had learned long ago not to trust anyone but himself.
"Your kind may survive with moonlight, but I won't," Chuuya went on. He shuffled closer to the stream by his side—a rivulet of water dug deep into rock and soil, still clear enough despite the previous week's rain. Dazai watched him wash his face and neck with it in quick movements. Once he was done, he said, "Summer's coming to an end, and nights are cold in this part of the realm."
"I defer to your judgment, then," Dazai murmured.
As much energy as this human had, it was still nowhere near what a moonshadow elf could endure. Dazai walked back into the forest making sure to step as close to Chuuya as possible, and sure enough, the human's back tensed like a bow, his sharp blue eyes watching his every move as if ready to unsheathe his sword.
Dazai climbed to the roof of the trees. The sun's last golden rays washed over the forest canopy in shades of gold and green as he took what was needed to keep his companion warm. Perhaps the job could have been finished more quickly, but Dazai could not resist waiting for the moon. Last night the pleasure of the full had been all but gone in the face of his mission; he had not enjoyed a second of the power running through his veins and turning his skin translucent, had not basked for a moment in the monthly gift that his lifesource gave him. Now the full moon was over, but at least he could enjoy the light in peace.
It might be the last peace he could enjoy for the foreseeable future.
Chuuya was gone from the campsite when he slid back down to earth. The dragon egg was gone with him, and so was the bow he had carried on his back, which told Dazai that the human had probably gone hunting. At least he wasn't saddled with an incompetent. Chuuya had proved to him at the castle that the weapons and armor he wore were not for show, and Dazai might have been able to guess it on his own even without fighting him.
There was no ceremonial garb to be found on the prince of Katolis when they bumped into each other. His wrists were bound in leather, not steel. The sheath of his short sword was wooden, clipped and flaked in places from use, the jewel on its pommel long devoid of its shine; yet the blade was as sharp as Dazai's had been, and the strength to brandish it equal to his own.
Chuuya was lucky that the full moon had not yet risen when they met, though they seemed of a roughly equal standing without that added power. A few minutes later and Dazai would have killed him before the prince could hear him breathe. A few minutes later and no one would have discovered the dragon prince's egg kept in the court mage's secret lair like common loot.
Katolis would be missing an entire royal line, not just its current king.
Dazai busied himself with making the fire. He played idly with the oath still wound around his wrist once flames arose from the hearth he had dug. He knew trying to cut it off with a simple blade would be futile—oaths taken under moonlight, in blooming magic, especially oaths of life and death, were resistant to worldly forces. He would need to find a better weapon. Perhaps a sunfire elf's blade, if ever he crossed paths with one.
Chuuya came back with two hares strung above his shoulder and the deerskin bag still tightly held to his side. It was a wonder he had managed to hunt at all with the dragon egg bothering him like this. Curious, curious.
"Hope you like meat," Chuuya said, throwing the hares at Dazai's feet before dropping down onto the grass himself. He looked exhausted. "Otherwise there's a lot of wildberries around. I don't know what elves eat."
"Meat is fine," Dazai replied, taking one of the hares and beginning to skin it.
He still had a flask full of moonberry juice, but he would rather save it for emergencies. Winter would come before they reached Xadia, after all.
Soon the smell of roasting meat covered everything else. Chuuya's catches were not ideal—too skinny at this time of the year, too young perhaps, easier to catch but harder to take anything out of. Dazai still ate his share without complaint, down to suckling on the small bones to get everything he could of the meagre meal. Chuuya smoked and dried half of a hare for them to have meat to chew on the following day. There was no certainty that they would be able to rest as they did now, after all, once word got out that the prince was missing.
He caught the human stealing glances at his hands from time to time. No doubt Chuuya had never met an elf in his life before and found them surprising.
Dazai raised one of them—the one free of the oath bond—and spread his four fingers wide. "Curious?" he asked.
The man's eyes widened, and his ears turned a shade of pink darker. How charming.
"Just wondering how that doesn't bother you when handling weapons," Chuuya replied uneasily. "Swords are heavy."
"Mine are not."
He looked skeptical. Dazai chuckled and took his folded blades out of their holsters at his back, paying no mind to the way Chuuya's shoulders tensed at the sight, before handing them to him with the blades pointed toward himself.
A gesture of trust.
Chuuya took them wearily. The handles were indeed narrower than what he was probably used to, and his pinkies had little space to hold onto them the way they did to man-made blades. He still unfolded the blades easily after a moment of examining them, taking a tentative swing at the air in front of him. Firesmoke parted under the gesture as if it had been cut.
"What are they made of?" he asked, staring intently at the blades.
They shone under the moonlight more brightly than ever. Only moonshadow smiths knew how to harbor the moon's power like this, and then only a few of them. Dazai only ever got his weapons from Oda.
"Steel melted by dragonfire," he answered. "I don't know the specifics. Elven blacksmiths are very tight-lipped about their trade secrets."
"Dragonfire…"
Chuuya handed the daggers back to Dazai. His hands, once freed, rested upon the deerskin bag sitting by his hip.
"You really didn't know that the egg was intact," Dazai said softly.
The bag could not completely close on the egg, and from the interstices left after the metal clasps were tightened, the shell diffused its otherworldly light.
"Of course not," Chuuya replied. "And neither did the king. He would never have kept it if he knew. He always blamed Mori for killing the dragon prince as well as the king, he would've given it back to the dragon queen in a heartbeat, no matter if it cost him his head."
The king had already paid for his crime with his head, no matter that the crime was only half of what they all thought. Dazai didn't share that information with Chuuya.
"You are a strange prince," he said instead, toying with the band around his wrist. It was even tighter now. "I thought you were just a member of the royal guard when I met you. Do all Katolian royalty act like you?"
A shadow passed over Chuuya's face. It exacerbated the fatigue lining it, the scar running down his right cheek vertically, no doubt a memento of some past battle. His hands lifted from the bag and went to rest in his lap, fingers clenched together.
"I've never seen a moonshadow elf that looked like you," Chuuya said. "You don't have…"
"White hair? Horns?" Dazai smiled tersely. "Ah, that would be because my mother was human."
"What?"
Surprise was a good look on the human prince. His eyes looked even brighter with it.
"It was quite the scandal, as you can imagine. My father was shunned by his village, and so was I, until his death. I'm lucky that my superior took a shine on me when I started training to join the assassin squadron."
Chuuya didn't seem to have regained use of his voice yet. He stared at Dazai with those unsettling eyes, his brow creased with confusion and some modicum of pity. Dazai stared back until Chuuya, embarrassed, looked away.
"I don't consider myself half-human, before you ask," Dazai said. "I am an elf. I never knew my mother. I was raised in Xadia my whole life, surrounded by moonshadow elves and raised by their standards. I never met a human before coming here—never talked to one before talking to you."
"I've never talked to an elf before either," Chuuya muttered, still flushed. "You're not exactly what I expected."
"Centuries of war and propaganda will do that. You're not what I expected either." Dazai grinned and added: "I thought the royal prince of Katolis would be taller."
"Shut up," Chuuya growled.
How very simple Chuuya's temper seemed to be. He had been quick to rile up when Dazai had stumbled upon him in the castle, each jab at his pride making his teeth clench tighter and his sword sing louder. Yet he had never faltered. He had held his own against a moonshadow elf, an elite assassin, on the very brink of the full moon. If they had kept dueling long enough for the moon to rise, Dazai had no doubt that Chuuya would have put up the same fight, even with Dazai turning invisible to his eyes.
He would have died, of course. But he would not have given up.
"I'm not… I'm not the royal prince," Chuuya said suddenly.
His body language was different now. Not demure, not embarrassed, oh no; but his voice was softer, the line of his shoulders appeased. The darkening sky overhead could not erase the flame-bright color of his hair, and in that penumbra, he looked less like a soldier and more like a young man.
A very beautiful young man, Dazai could not help but think.
"You told me you were prince Chuuya," Dazai replied. "Or was that a lie? Should I expect the dragon prince's egg to be nothing more than another trick of your court mage, then?"
"I am Chuuya. But I'm not the king's son."
Ah. "The late queen's, then."
Chuuya nodded. Grief came and went through his eyes like a brisk summer breeze. "I never knew my real father," he said. "Only that he was a scientist of some sort. I actually don't have any memories from before I was seven or eight, and my mother married king Fukuzawa shortly after that. The princess was born within the year, so Katolis has its royal line secure whether I'm here or not."
That would explain why Chuuya seemed so unworried that the Katolian army would be deployed after him.
It was terribly easy for Dazai to fill in the blanks in that story. With the queen dead for years and a princess by blood here to take the throne, there was little use for a bastard, no matter how royal. Chuuya would not have been raised in the same halo of admiration and luxury that princess Kyouka did—indeed he would be considered a hindrance, perhaps a threat, to the rightful heir. It was no wonder he had been delegated to the lowly position of royal guard, and at that not one of those kept in close quarters with the king or his daughter.
Dazai had only glimpsed the princess very briefly the night before. She had stood at the sideline of battle, a girl of eleven or twelve, no more. Her sweet face torn with fear and hopelessness.
"You protected her so adamantly," Dazai said, thinking of the blows Chuuya had taken to make sure her step-sister would not come to any harm. "I would've thought you'd resent her."
"She's my sister."
"Blood means little in the face of injustice."
Chuuya bared his teeth at him. "She's my sister," he repeated. "She's innocent. She's never treated me like an outsider, not once in her life. Neither has the king. I may not be of royal blood, and I may not be of much use to them, but she calls me brother anyway. She has nothing to do with this war, nothing, and if you or any of your kind try to hurt her, I'll erase every trace of your existence from this earth."
The threat was clear enough. Chuuya had known the princess to be in safe hands when he fled the castle, but he had no idea what had happened since then. He couldn't know, like Dazai did, that the king was dead. That Kyouka had become queen before morning light came to bathe the blood left around her. If the princess had come to harm…
Well. Dying at the hand of such a man might not be the worst way to go. Chuuya had been the one to find the egg; he had been the one to suggest, immediately, that it be given back to the dragon queen in the hope of putting an end to the war. Any other human would have destroyed it on sight.
If he was human at all.
They set up no watch for the night. In the unlikely event that someone had come to look for the missing bastard prince, what with the grief of losing a king and the preparation of no-doubt sumptuous funerals, Dazai would pick up their footsteps from miles away. Chuuya fell asleep curled around the deerskin bag, one hand holding it as one held a newborn. After enough time had passed for Dazai to be sure that his regular breathing was not faked, he slowly grabbed the man's only other bag.
The Primal Stone sat in it, gleaming softly in the dark, the tempest caught within it raging as it ever would.
Though he had never seen one before, there was no doubt at all that this was an authentic stone from the old ages. Before the world was split in two, before human mages stopped draining from the six magic sources and started draining from life itself, blinded by their greed. It was not any heavier than its size indicated; indeed it seemed surprisingly light in Dazai's palm, considering the power trapped within its depths.
Modern humans could use Primal Stones as magic sources. Theoretically. Elves had little use for them, for magic was as much part of their bodies as blood, and Dazai had seen the human court mage use this very one to draw runes and spit lightning at them, before Chuuya stole it from him. But human powers were too steeped in dark magic now for natural sources to be sufficient. The mage had left dead spiders and moths in his wake, rats even when he had become more violent.
Chuuya had drawn the rune for wind with no experience, no other source of energy, and the stone had obeyed him. He had not had to kill anything living to blow enemies out of their way multiple times. As far as Dazai knew, human mages had not been capable of such things since before dark magic was first used.
It could be that his information was wrong. None of them had known, after all, that the prince was not of the king's blood. Contact with humanity was fraught with danger, skewed by eons of bias and hatred. What else did Xadia take for granted that humanity had proven false or outdated?
Dazai had not come to Katolis because he longed to learn about humanity. A lifetime of hostility for his mixed heritage had taught him, down to the bone, that humanity never brought anything good with it. He had come because the mission given to Ango's squadron was to infiltrate the biggest of the human kingdoms and take the head of the man responsible for killing the dragon king. His, and his son's, for the innocent egg they had lost in the tragedy.
He had not expected to find the prince so soon upon infiltrating the castle on his own. He had not expected that this skilled guard he was fighting would hear of his goal and immediately reveal himself for who he was.
I am prince Chuuya. You don't need to attack anyone else.
Dazai had not planned to. Moonshadow elves did not relish in bloodshed. The two oaths bound around his wrists were only for two heads—Fukuzawa Yukichi and the prince. No amount of killing would free him from their grip as long as both still breathed. He had sworn it, they all had, upon Xadia and their hearts.
One had fallen the night before when Ango fired the blood arrow toward their homeland. Fukuzawa was no more. The other stayed around Dazai's forearm, tightening more with each our. Already he could see his skin turning blue from lack of circulation.
He would lose this hand if he did not kill the man now sleeping next to him.
It would be so easy. With the full moon so close behind him, with the night now spread over him like the roof of his home, Chuuya would not stand a chance. Even if he did hear Dazai unsheathe his daggers to prepare to slit his throat, he would not be quick enough to parry the blow. The white band wrapped around Dazai's wrist would turn crimson with the blood sacrificed and fall to the ground like a dead leaf. His hand would be saved.
"Give me the egg," Dazai had ordered in the dark of the lab, unnerved by the stench of death and frightened animals, by the sight of bugs pinned to cushions like grotesque jewelry. "I'll take it back to Xadia, and your life will be spared."
Chuuya had been disarmed then. He had not yet taken the stone from the mage who would follow them soon after. But he had stood his ground, his hands carefully holding the egg as if scared of breaking it. "No," he had replied, teeth bared and eyes glinting with determination. "I'll take it to Xadia. It has to come from a human. It has to come from me."
Dazai had only thought of the present. Chuuya had seen the egg, the promise of Xadia's survival, and thought, I can end this war for good.
Dazai slid the primal stone back into Chuuya's leather pouch. He lay back against the soft grass and watched the moon unblinkingly.
All his life he had thought humans to be war-mongering and lawless creatures. He had wept for the dragon king's death as all the land had wept, feeling the ache through his bones as magic struggled to readjust. He had felt his soul cry for the loss of the dragon prince's egg, of an innocent life torn down by greed, by violence, by inexcusable and soulless monsters.
Now a human slept by his side. A human who had taken injury to protect not only his kind, but Dazai himself, once they had stolen the egg. A human mage who did not need dark magic to make use of his powers; a human prince on the run, sleeping in the dirt, his body curved around a dragon egg as if trying to add to it another shell, another shield.
What a waste it would be to kill such a person.
