Yesterday I was able to visit my mother for the first time since February 2020. To say that it was good for both of our souls would be an understatement. I could not be with my mother and family when my father passed away in November 2020; instead, it was a goodbye with a nurse holding a cell phone to his ear. The same scenario took place with my cousin, a sort of goodbye a few days prior when I spoke to her briefly on her cell phone. Then, a few days later she was gone. The last person I hugged was my dear friend Angela in March 2020, except for last Thursday when my other sweet friend Amy gave me a side hug of sorts after assisting my beautiful 19-year-old Lady P to the rainbow bridge. I had texted Amy afterward saying I was sorry that I didn't take a full-on hug, and it wasn't that I didn't want one; it's that voice in my head screaming BE CAREFUL! Covid has undoubtedly taken a toll on me in knowing I'm supposed to take social distancing VERY seriously because of my health. I was never a big hugger, but I have become much more of one over the years. I truly began to miss human contact after five months or so, never mind 18 months. I cried when hugging my Mom yesterday. Both of us double-masked with N95s and a top mask. It was 18 months of missing my Mom, and I was so grateful that my first real hug was with her. Finn was over the moon to spend five-plus hours with his Nana, and we enjoyed the outdoors, the screened porch, and taking a walk by the pond where we fed the fish and turtles. I was so happy and at peace being able to spend time with my Mom. I also received some moments of my Dad's, and I wore his jacket as I walked around the pond. It felt good, and even with Covid and other health issues lurking, I still felt safe and loved because I was with my Mom. She has and always will be my greatest protector. Great Beginnings 💛 Ok... So going to uni as a mature student was one of the toughest and most challenging experiences, but also one of my favourite decisions I have ever made. • Partly because of some of the amazing, intelligent people I met along the way and partly because it was the first time I got to paint on an entirely blank canvas. I didn't know anyone and they didn't know me. • However, sharing a journey with people striving to be successful, definitely makes you comfortable in adopting the same attitude, instead of the "struggle mentality" or the "victim mindset". • Someone said to me at one point, that I shouldn't put that I'm a graduate on my profile because it seems like I'm showing off and so I took it off for a while, but as I've trained I realised that the only people intimidated by my growth are those who are afraid of change. I seek to exist outside of my own comfort zones. Never apologise for wanting more for yourself, your children or your community.
