Contemporary Japanese light novels and classic American sci-fi are basically evil opposites when it comes to their titling conventions: both titles will be long and rambling, but the former will be a prosaically descriptive phrase that lays out the story's entire premise, while the latter will be a line from a poem the author liked that tells you absolutely fucking nothing.

Meaningful Highlights from Naruto Retsuden:
“Don’t give me that!” A vein popped up on Naruto’s forehead. “Which is more important—the future of the village or my life?!” “Your life,” came Sasuke’s immediate response.
The fact that among the people Naruto wishes could see Konoha in an era of peace includes Zabuza and Haku, because twenty years later, they still live on in his heart.
Yamato and Mitsuki having a strong friendship, where Yamato is the first person Mitsuki greets upon coming home, tells about his missions, and brings strawberry daifuku as a treat, coming full circle for Yamato be an important figure for a child with similar origins.
Naruto reflecting on how grateful he is to be Hokage during peace time: “After Old Lady Tsunade became Hokage, her first job was to treat shinobi injured in battle. When Master Kakashi became Hokage, his was to hold the ceremony commemorating the anniversary of those who died in the Great Ninja War. With the Fourth … I dunno what his first job was, but with the era being what it was, I’m pretty sure he had plenty of unpleasant work [...] And the first thing I did when I became Hokage was give a business license to a traditional sweet shop in the old city. Makes you laugh, right? That’s peace.”
The fact the Sakura says she's going to leave Sarada in the care of someone both her and Sasuke trust, and the reveal that that person is Iruka, who was the first teacher to both of them!
Shikamaru responding to Naruto bowing his head to Team 7 for helping him with, “The Hokage can’t go bowing his head to just anyone.” And Naruto's narration replying: He wasn’t bowing to just anyone. He was bowing to them.
Naruto's response to Sasuke trying to help him at the cost of his own life: If the opposite meant sacrificing Sasuke, then a lifetime of never being able to use chakra was a hundred times better.
Naruto's narration explaining that Team 7 has their own special meet-up spot where they watch fireworks and drink together during festivals and how they make it clear that both Sai and Yamato were invited and welcome!!

I am sick and tired of seeing shit takes from people about how characters like Sawako (Kimi ni Todoke) and Miyo (My Happy Marriage) are "unfeminist" because they're shy and soft-spoken. When Miyo is literally that way as a SURVIVAL TACTIC because SHE WAS FUCKING ABUSED And Sawako is showed to have social anxiety and the other kids are shown to kind of bully her. But both girls gain confidence and strength as both series progress. NOT ALL WOMEN HAVE TO BE STONE COLD BADASSES TO BE STRONG!!! Geez…

Oh My Gosh!
This series is freaking WILD!!!! If you haven’t read the Light Novels of The 7th Timeloop (there are only 4 out currently) I BEG you, PLEASE DO (then DM me so we can rant about how insane this thing is together). Based on everything I’ve read so far, this is the summarized plot of the series so far, and it is one of the greatest things I’ve ever read.
Rishe and Arnold are both equally little sh*s in their own unique way.
Arnold is WHIPPED.
Chaos just for chaos sake.
Rishe is a saint as seen by nearly everyone she meets.
Rishe’s theme song is the acoustic version of: F* You I Won’t Do What You Tell Me.
Arnold should be concerned about the following his lover is amassing, but he just finds it funny.
WHAT THE FRICK JUST HAPPENED AND HOW AND WHY?!?!
Skepticism/“what are you plotting now?”.
They’re adorable and I’ll ship them till the day I die.
Arnold is in fact a flirt and knows EXACTLY what he’s doing.
Rishe collecting the people from her past life like she’s Ash Ketchum.
Oliver is the best wingman.
Chaos for Chaos sake.
And finally.
14. Arnold is WHIPPED and Rishe is flustered.
Thank you.

Tumblr media
As I mentioned, I'm going to share all that I've translated of the Escaflowne Newtype Novels. The first part of the series novelization can be read on the link below. It includes the prologue and chapter one of the first light novel which is titled simply "Escaflowne". Sorry for any mistakes, I decided to just start posting it as it is. Title picture is edited from the novel cover illustration by Hiroshi Osaka.

you won't regret it i prommy
Tumblr media
propaganda points:
two absolute dumbasses in love who are the backbone of this show's comedy
a pathetic little anxious meowmeow and his girlboss explosives-happy gf
1930s mafia shenanigans
a really really really cool train called the Flying Pussyfoot
a character named Jacuzzi Splot
a silent but hot goth girl assassin
the most aggravating asshole known to man <3
a guy who is first described as "protagonist-ish"
THE BEST AND SMOOTHEST ANIME OP YOU'LL EVER SEE AND I AM NOT FUCKING KIDDING
it has an anime that's fairly short so far and a good way to get into it at first, but its source is a series of about 22 light novels and it has a manga adaptation to boot. the anime only covers the first three novels btw, hence why it's a REALLY good way to pique your interest into the series. also it's by the creator of durarara
it can be confusing at first bc it's not told in chronological order but i beg of you, give it a chance. wait til at least after episode 2 before you decide it's not for you
so yeah. watch/read Baccano!

"The widely-adored Student Council members didn't get along very well. In fact, they had a tense relationship, almost to the point of discord."
objectively the best part of the first light novel is how much the student council all* hate each other's guts so i made a little compilation for anyone who doesn't feel like reading it <3
*juri & miki are buddies :) also touga derives enjoyment from being hated so i'm not sure to what extent he really hates the others back lol
juri vs saionji:
1) "His swordsmanship was his only strong point."
2) "A 'mistake'... is that really all it was?" Arisugawa Juri spoke softly, but still loud enough for Saionji to hear.
"What!?"
"You lost because you're so infatuated with our mysterious Rose Bride. It's made you rusty."
"Interesting. Why don't we test that theory?" Saionji said, bristling in response to Juri's criticism. Touga made no move to stop them. On the contrary, he looked amused at the situation, a smile playing about his lips.
saionji vs touga:
1) "What's normal varies from person to person. For instance, why don't you try to unravel these mysteries, best friend?"
Saionji, the target of Touga's words, glared at him with undisguised distaste.
2) "The two of them had been childhood friends, but now they got along terribly. Or, more accurately, Saionji harbored a deep one-sided hatred of Touga."
miki vs touga:
1) "He stopped writing, and glared at Touga."
2) "Touga-sempai! Did you... is this one if your plots!?"
"I don't know anything about it. It's 'The Ends of the World's doing."
"You liar.
juri vs touga:
1) "Don't get cocky, Touga," Juri said grumpily, from across the table.
2) "Touga, you're full of bullshit. I doubt you've said a sincere word in your whole life."
"My, such harsh words." Far from sounding hurt, Touga seemed like he was enjoying himself.
3) [afterword] Manga Juri is in love with Touga, but Novel Juri doesn't even like him. Actually, it would be more accurate to say she detests him.
bonus juri & miki palate cleanser:
"This is unlike you. What are you so worked up about?" Juri protested to Miki. But her voice held none of the iciness she'd shown when speaking to Utena and Saionji.

Meaningful Highlights from Kakashi Retsuden:
Minato catching Kakashi before he falls, the same way Kakashi always does for his students. And Kakashi, even at eight or nine years old, straight out of his father's funeral and before being his student, immediately relaxing when he runs into Minato: His feet tangled beneath him and he pitched forward. Into someone’s back. “You were really strong back there,” a voice told him, and he suddenly saw bright golden hair. He felt his breathing become a little easier. The Yellow Flash of Konoha. Namikaze Minato.
Kakashi describing his current feelings about his father: Now he felt proud from the bottom of his heart to have been born the child of the White Fang of Konoha.
Kakashi wanting to help the people of Redaku in a way that they can sustain themselves, even as he actually is providing a great deal of support through the process: The people of this country had to learn how to stand up and walk under their own strength. Give a starving person bread or teach them how to grow wheat. As Hokage, Kakashi had always chosen the latter.
Kakashi reflecting on his time as Sixth Hokage he eschewed tradition to build something that developed beyond shinobi: A never-ending peace. That was what Kakashi had sought as the Sixth Hokage. An orderly society that would go on and on even when he was not the Hokage, even when the day came when the role of Hokage disappeared. To create a framework so that they would never again fall into the quagmire of war.
The way Kakashi shows that he still views all of the former students taught by him and his friends in a parental and protective way: They had long since reached adulthood, and some were now parents while others were active on the front lines as shinobi. Even so, no matter how many years passed, to Kakashi, they were his precious students and the next generation who needed to be protected. Seeing them having so much fun was enough to ease his heart.
