Second in revised my series on Maedhros and light
Part one
Note: fire has a fascinating place in the Legendarium and I have several other posts about it(yes the main one is just rambling about Aerin)
cw: mentions of torture and canon suicide
“For the fire of life was hot within him”
“for since his torment upon Thangorodrim his spirit burned like a white fire within and he was as one who returns from the dead”
The fires of Maedhros’s youth were the flickering of torch filled lanterns, the smoldering embers of the forges and the occasional campfire built on journeys into the wilderness.
The burning of the ships was the first time he had truly seen the destructive force of fire. He watched the beautiful works of the Teleri go up in flames, choked by the smell of burning wood.
And soon after, the encounter with the balrogs who would take the life of his father. Those monsters of fire and shadow who were all of the burning and fear of flame but none of the light and warmth. Their glow blinded his host, disorienting them and leading a number to flee directly to their deaths
The fires of Angband…he rarely saw the volcanic heart of them, kept away from the forges and the depths of the Thangorodrim but he still felt the heat of the brands and the fiery whips of the balrogs, still felt the agony of the fevers and burning thirst that would plague those kept in the pits
The fire of life within him…
It was not something he could truly say was for the best, the burning desire that carried him through desecrated lands, slaughtering enemies and kin with ruthless skill and feverish energy
His spirit burned with a white fire within…
And of course there is the fire at the end. That chasm he jumps into clutching the Silmaril in his ruined hand until the burning takes him completely

Note: I am reposting these follow ups to myMaedhros and light post in all its parts because I finally finished the last part and because I have more content.
(plus the darkening described in Morgoth’s Ring is one of my favorite scenes)
I. Treelight (and lack thereof)
The light of the trees illuminated the world of Maedhros’s childhood. It was beautiful and profound to him certainly but no more so than one might view the sun and moon.
He was politely bemused by his father’s growing obsession with the light and though he would listen patiently to the theories and diagrams being explained as Fëanor sometimes required of him, he never held the same interest.
The mingling of the trees, that rare hour where both shone at once and the combined glow of silver and gold dazzled the lands was often a time of celebration and gathering. Maedhros remembers dancing with his cousins in this light, of feasts and of the glory of looking up from parchment or craft to witness the spectacle.
The day the light went out stands out in his memories as the most terrified he had ever been and until the very end excepting artificial experiences of terror in Angband, it remains so. How he cowered with his brothers in that sickly meadow unable to move, to speak or to scream, hearing the sobbing fear of one or more of the others but unable to console them. How that monster crept past them, its malice focused upon the brothers for a moment containing an eternity and how they felt no relief when its gaze passed them by. That scream that broke the darkness and seemed to echo in their minds like the vibrations of a torturous bell.
Of the rotting corpses of the trees he glanced only briefly as they fled through the choking darkness.
Maedhros would see that light again of course, trapped in the crown of the being who taunted him with the light of his past, present and future. The light he could see but never touch, so close and yet so far. The light he was certain left his eyes when he was brought back from the darkness, that he sees in fewer and fewer of his kin as the days wear on.

“Percy’s special”
Oh I’m not gonna make it.
Seeing this kind of bullying in tv (actual realistic bullying, most people won’t like, push you and hit you or anything, since that way they’ll get caught, so they keep it simple and nobody does anything because they don’t see it as bullying) just took me back to school and holy shit. The way Nancy Bobofit pronounces the word special, like if it was disgusting, I think that’s very important representation. Because we know Percy has adhd, of course we know, but in the later books this fact has been pushed aside. Rick doesn’t really add much adhd traits and struggles in his books compared to in his first book. And meanwhile I knew about Percy’s time in school, seeing it is so so different and it’s not often bullying is shown this way and seeing a story of a bullied character, who’s deemed weird and “special” who then goes and saves the world and has lots of friends and a romantic partner, that’s really important for kids. For kids and for me. I’ll shut up I’m sorry I just have lots of feelings about it like I get it percy, I get it.
