It's either coming up to my period again OR I've just developed a disease where I get misty eyed at even the most banal sequences and scenes in ghibli movies. I was crying during the early parts of ponyo
#ramblings of a lunatic#ponyo is not a very emotional movie i just kept being like#OUGHHH LITTLE BABY...LITTLE BABY HAS TO TAKE CARE OF HIS MOM WHILE HIS DAD IS AWAY AT SEA...OUGH LITTLE FISH GIRL#nothing as bad as when i was crying during every scene in kikis delivery service tho lmao#i still haven't seen very many ghibli movies but they're all pretty wonderful#i had another art exam today so i think I'm gonna chill for the rest of the night now that's i watched the cute fish movie#I'll watch something new soon (i am eyeing that movie ever after 👁️👁️ sorry i still can't kick the fairytale spinterest revival rn)#but until then I'm gonna have fun#be silly hehe#I'm also at a weird place with my toh hyperfix where like. i went through intense pre-grief (is that?? what it's called)#like. near the beginning of the month#just being so so sad about it ending and the inevitable fandom dwindle that'll come with that (OBJECTIVE WORST PART!!!)#but that pre-grief was so intense that now I'm at a weird place of peace with it#once the shows over I'll probably start being able to actually like. watch and read other things now hsbdjdhfk#but i imagine it'll stay my main interest (to u guys. I'm more complex irl) for a good while (i wanna make more art i wanna try writing!!!)#just with other stuff spliced in as it comes (i wanna get back on reading sailor moon. maybe check in on deltarune again)#(TRY and get back into tlt again. hell maybe I'll check in on comics again! who knows)#but tbh as long as i find toh on my dash i doubt I'll ever really leave it behind lol#again- a relatively positive fandom experience plus a deep connection with the work is a recipe for me being Not Normal forever#I'm. making less sense as this goes on#anyway. you get it! I'm a big cry baby but also I'm at a state of peace for the moment. yeehaw

When Marnie was Here threw me for a loop, the first half of the movie I was so astonished that they made a film about a ghost girl being in love with this antisocial girl and I didn’t expect it to be gay so I was trying so hard to hide it from my mom because she’ll start thinking I’m gay again.
BUT THEN it turned out the ghost was her grandmother and I was like FUCKING bULLSHIT. Like I’m aroace and I really love media showing examples of non romantic love but that was utter fucking bullshit man. I was so ready to support the dead girl and this lonely kind of a butthole artist and in the end they were related. I felt robbed and was in denial until the part where marnie was showing memories where she didn’t interact with the main character whose name i don’t remember. The moment I saw that doll with the MC I was like are they going to make Marnie related to MC? and they fucking did.
I’ve come to the conclusion that even if they’re related and their love ended up to be maternal affection I still think the mc is gay as hell and marnie is bi

TOH x Castle in the Sky fusion
OK so it’s not lining up exactly, histories and character arcs are going to be divided up between the Owl House characters, but I think it works. Focused on Willow, Gus, and Hunter, the Emerald Trio.
Lots under the cut. Anyone can borrow these ideas~
Teenager Willow is from a mining town that is drying up. Her father Gilbert is moving with her into the countryside around their extended family. Her other father Harvey is selling their home and arriving later. They say that they used to live there.
Willow falls immediately in love with the green hills and learning how to farm, how to tend to the plants and animals. She makes friends with a local girl, Amity. Gilbert swears that Willow and Amity used to be friends when they were little. She’s bonding with her extended family as well, her “honorary grandparents” Gwendolyn and Dell, with her “Aunt Lilith”, who is teaching her and Amity about the local folklore and “magic spells” that she knows.
There’s a family friend, Camila, who is so excited that there’s “another lovely young lady for my daughter to befriend!”
Unfortunately, her new life is interrupted in the middle of the night by the military. Her family is accused of crimes they didn’t commit. Willow and Amity are taken away from them as a result. They tried to get Lilith, but Camila fought them off. Willow is taken up into the air in a massive airship along with Amity.
They agree not to say anything, no matter how scary this General Phillip and his guards Kikimora and Hunter are. Amity overhears something about “The Key to the Castle” and realizes. Amity hands off a circular pendant with a golden moon with glittery stars to Willow and asks her to keep it hidden.
A few minutes after, the airship is attacked by pirates. The girls take the opportunity to attack Phillip and his guards. They climb out of the window, trying to get to another room.
Pirates arrive on the side of the ship – Amity recognizes and calls out to Luz, who is piloting a small craft. Pirate Captain Eda and Camila in Pirate gear poke their heads out of the window and try to get the girls back in.
Amity takes a leap of faith and gets onto Luz’s aircraft. Willow freezes, but tries to follow her friend. Amity and Luz try to catch her, but she slips out of their fingers. Amity says “It’s okay, you’ll be okay if you fall-” but Willow doesn’t really believe her.
Until, after a minute or two of wind whistling in her ears, the pendant glows and she slows down, floating to the ground. She thinks she’s dreaming, and the day’s events catch up with the low oxygen, so she faints. Because of fate, Willow lands near the entrance of a large mine back at her home city.
Gus was able to spot her and put her somewhere safe. He recognizes her and calls Harvey, who carries her to her old home. Gus wakes her up with so many questions, about why she was floating, and if she heard about this really cool “Castle in the Sky”. Gus wants to travel the world and see everything.
The relief is short lived – the Pirates, consisting of Eda, Camila, Raine, and Luz, are coming to take the Pendant. And the Military, with Kikimora, Hunter, and Warden Wrath arriving as well.
That Iconic scene of the guys flexing as a distraction, but with Harvey and Warden Wrath.
Gus and Willow escape down into the mines, where the find Darius and Eberwolf chilling. They explain about how people used to be able to mine for magical stones – but the knowledge was lost.
They get captured by the Military and are separated. Phillip has Lilith and threatens Willow with the safety of her, Eberwolf, Darius, and Gus if she doesn’t make Gus turn away. Gus does turn away reluctantly.
Lilith and Willow talk, and Lilith reveals that she’s her mother. “she and Gilbert had admiration for each other, but him and Harvey had love.” And to remember the “magic spells” that she was taught.
Phillip is actually pleased by this. He brings Willow to a crashed, broken robot, Jean-Luc. Willow was able to activate the homing beacon and show the pathway to the Castle. But then she’s locked in her room again. Lilith is taken to the dungeon.
Gus makes it back to his home, where Luz and the Pirates are waiting. They fire him up and encourage him to join the crew on a raid to get Willow back.
Hunter, because of his failures, was demoted to giving the prisoners food. Him and Willow have a talk about “destiny” and “a future that you’re able to choose”. Hunter leaves.
Willow does “a spell of protection” and activates Jean-Luc. The robot starts to destroy everything. Hunter, in a moment of altruism, opens up the prison doors so that Eberwolf, Darius, and Lilith have a chance to escape.
Luz and Gus work together to save Willow.
Now the Pirates are racing the military to reach the Castle in the Sky.
Eda is the Captain and Raine is the First Mate. Alador is the engineer, working with Amity to keep the ship going. Camila is the cook and doctor. King, Luz and Hooty are crew members. (anyone else you want can be added as well.) Gus and Willow are new crew. Lilith, Eberwolf, and Darius are helpful stowaways.
Gus and Willow are the ones in the kite that land in the Garden. The main tree is a Palistrom tree with bright blue bark. Willow loves it so much. They reach the Castle first, meet with a friendly Jean-Luc robot, it’s nice and peaceful.
Then the military arrives and starts blowing up the doors, tying up the Pirates and raiding all of the gold. Hunter is still shadowing Phillip, but is looking more and more disgusted.
Phillip drags Lilith away from the Pirates, forces her to find the entrance to the underbelly of the Castle. Lilith refuses to go inside, citing that “I’m from a lesser line of royalty, I am not allowed.”
Phillip calls her bluff, stating she’s a Clawthorne, she’s allowed. He grabs Amity, saying that she’s a Blight, she’s maintenance. And Luz is nothing at all. “My foot may not be royal, but I’m still gonna give you a royal butt-whooping!” Luz shouts.
Willow and Gus try to sneak by and free their friends, but Willow is caught. Phillip, Willow, Amity and Hunter all go deeper into the Castle.
Gus frees the Pirates, takes a gun and Luz with him to go save the others. Darius and Eberwolf grab a Military escape ship and start loading it up.
Phillip tells them about the real treasure, not gold or jewels, but magical might. The Castle could be a real powerhouse, ruling over the sky and the earth at once. Phillip lures all of the army into the viewing room and dumps them into the ocean. He activates more robots, destroying the Army ship as well.
Hunter tries to stop him from doing it, but he fails. In the scuffle, Willow gets the Pendant. Gus and Luz show up. Phillip tries to threaten them all, but they refuse.
That iconic scene happening where Phillip shoots Willow’s braids and cuts her hair short somehow. (That’s not how bullets work but it works in the film as an emotional point and I respect that)
“No matter how much you think you deserve it, no matter how much knowledge and power you have, you can’t rule anything without love.”
Willow remembers and decides to share the Spell of Destruction with everyone so that the Castle can’t be used for evil. The light from it blinds Phillip, he falls to his death like the others.
Willow, Gus, Hunter, Amity and Luz all survive by climbing onto the overgrown root system. The Castle floats higher and higher into the atmosphere without all the weight.
The Pirates hook their smaller ships together, revealing that they all survived with some of the gold. Luz and Amity get snuggled by Eda, Camila and Alador. Willow gets a long hug from Lilith. Gus gets some hugs and loving roughhousing from the other Pirates. Hunter gets onto a small ship with Darius and Eberwolf and gets a head ruffle and a hug.
Willow, Lilith, Hunter, Darius, and Eberwolf all return to the countryside. Gus goes on a world traveling adventure with Eda, Luz, Amity, and the other Pirates. They all stay in touch and won’t ever forget the magical journey they all took together.

btw just want to say i'm still soooo so sad that the ghibli earthsea movie was not very good because if there's anything that would make an exquisite ghibli adaptation it is fucking EARTHSEA!!! and it's still gutting that they got it so wrong and especially upsetting to think that movie might be the only exposure some people ever have to earthsea at all. i don't even want them to try again in case it came out bad again but it's very sad and tragic to think about

Bulgarian Music in Studio Ghibli films
”Myth has it that Orpheus was born in what is now Bulgaria. It seemed to be fact, not myth, that his daughters are still singing there”
These words were written by the New York Times in the remote 1963 — the year in which the largest Bulgarian folk ensemble crossed the Iron Curtain to conquer an entire continent with its cosmic art.
The 1975 release of Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, a compilation album of modern arrangements of Bulgarian folk songs, further popularized Bulgarian music, and in 1977, a vinyl record featuring the folk song “Izlel ye Delyo Haydutin” (Eng: Come out rebel Delyo) began its journey aboard the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecrafts.
From this point on popularity from the West spread to the East, and Bulgarian folk music made it to the entertainment industry, including legendary Japanese anime films, like the cult cyberpunk “Ghost in the Shell” or the heartwarming Studio Ghibli features.
In this short article I write about two occasions of Bulgarian music playing in Studio Ghibli’s films.
The record that inspired the creation of “Only Yesterday”
“Only Yesterday” is a 1991 Japanese animated drama film written and directed by Isao Takahata, based on the 1982 manga of the same title by Hotaru Okamoto and Yuko Tone. Set in rural Japan, the film draws parallels with the peasant lifestyle present in Eastern Europe.
The original work is a compilation of short stories about 11-year-old Taeko’s daily life in 1966. Director Takahata had a hard time making it into a movie since the manga, told in the form of a memoir, has no plot to hold a feature. Together with producer Toshio Suzuki, they came up with the solution of bringing the narrator of the story, adult Taeko, into the movie. But there is a curious anecdote about how this idea came to mind.

In a 2021 interview with students from Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, producer Suzuki recounts how a record of Bulgarian songs performed by the children choir “Bodra Smyana”, introduced to him by director Takahata, inspired the creation of the movie. Moved by the cosmic voices of the children, they decided to make “Only Yesterday” a musical. He also recalls what a tiring process it was to acquire the rights to the music, but if you’ve seen the movie, I am sure you will agree that it was worth it; the haunting, beautiful songs with the pastoral images of farmers picking flowers contribute to one of the greatest scenes created in cinema.

In “Only Yesterday”, we can hear two songs from the album Bulgarian Polyphony I by Philip Koutev Ensemble. The upbeat “Dilmano Dilbero” [Eng. beautiful Dilmana] sets a happy mood as the protagonist gets changed and ready to go on the field. As the scene shifts and Taeko starts narrating a sad story about the girls in the past picking safflower with their bare hands, the song and mood shift as well.
While the first song has a fast rhythm, with lyrics about pepper planting that can also be interpreted figuratively, the second one, “Malka Moma Dvori Mete” [Eng., a little girl sweeps the yard], is a ballad about a young girl who is forced into marriage but has never known true love.
Both compositions sing about life-cycle events like marriage and the regular coming of the harvests, with lyrics perfectly fitting the setting and plot of the movie, which makes me wonder if the filmmakers chose them by chance or if they had someone translate the words.
Bulgarian Cosmic Voices Enchanting Howl
“Howl’s Moving Castle” is a 2004 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, loosely based on the 1986 novel of the same name by British author Diana Wynne Jones. Set in a fictional kingdom the movie draws inspiration from various places in Europe. One of them being Bulgaria.
The story focuses on a young girl, named Sophie, magically transformed into an old woman, and a self-confident but emotionally unstable young wizard, Howl, living in a magical moving castle.

If you’ve seen the movie, you surely remember the scene when Madame Suliman ambushes Howl and tries to strip him of his magic powers. Star Children encircle him and his companions; their shadows grow big, dark and intimidating. They start dancing and chanting unintelligible magic words and are almost successful in their devilish act.
This scene, together with the music played in the background, have been a favourite of many fans of the film. Some even recount it giving them nightmares when they were children.

It turns out, however, that these aren’t any incantations, but the lyrics of a folk song. In Bulgarian. And a love song! Contrary to popular belief, the lyrics have nothing to do with magic and are actually about a boy taking his sweetheart, Dona, to the market to buy her new clothes. The excerpt used in the movie is very short and a bit altered from the original, but the words used go like this: Trendafilcheto, kalafercheto, Done mamino, translated as “the rose, the costmary, my darling Dona”.
I am planing a follow up article where I will post the translated lyrics together with a brief explanation on how they are related to the movies.
If you want to comment on or add something, I would love to hear!

AHH OKAY the official art for the Shibuya Incident Arc OST is out (it will release January 24th, 2024) and I have so much to say about it!!
Suguru reflected in the young side of Satoru, his smile, the bright look in his eyes—that side alone looks like it could be in a Ghibli movie or something else lighthearted.
Then on the right side, there’s no Suguru. Based on context clues, since he’s looking at Suguru on the left side, who he is probably looking at on the right is Kenjaku, but there’s no reflection. Because he doesn’t see Suguru. The sadness in his eyes, the frown, the blood on his face—it looks like the cover of a horror story. (It basically is Satoru’s personally crafted horror fantasy come to life).
I am actually SO obsessed with this artwork. It is BEAUTIFULLY done. My god. The artist for this piece (please tell me who it is if you know) really captured the soul of the Shibuya Incident. Ugh. Yes. Yes yes yes.
(Side note: I am eagerly anticipating the name of the nostalgic, slightly creepy piano song that played when Satoru saw Suguru’s face again/was getting sealed. My guesses are either ‘Blue Spring’ or ‘Gate Open’.)

Batboys watching anime with reader
You know my ass went FULL ON LOCK MODE with Tim. I went crazy- 💀
***S/o is above 18, which means characters below are also aged up!
Doing requests until 1 Feb! Please see my pinned post and read the request rules on the navi! Thank you!🩷
Batbros watching anime with you
Dick Grayson
He’s watched a few 90s anime before, more the basic ones like One Piece and Pokémon, and he probably still watches them to this day. Boy has old CDs he has and you should probably try finding a Blue Ray (or use his if he can have Tim help fix it because it’s good as dead 💀) because he’s popping in every CD of old anime’s he have lying about.
“Wow, I didn’t know I had cowboy bebop! Or Slam Dunk!” He got a few rare gems, which makes it all the more fun to sit down on the couch under a blanket as you huddle and watch the nostalgic 90s anime shows together while eating popcorn.
He doesn’t mind watching new, modern day animes, just be prepared for when you two watch sad anime shows because he will sob like it’s the end of the world.
“NO, WHY WOULD KAORI DIE LIKE THIS?? AND SHE LOVES ARIMA- OH MY GOD IM SO—”sobs even more. He gets emotional while watching them because it’s so sad that it’s sO GOOD-
Loves dancing to those danceable anime music with you. He goes ALL. OUT. He even sings all of it in Japanese like wow-
I would love to hear him sing Cruel Angel’s Thesis in his Discowing suit and with goth makeup on it because it “sets the mood”, PLEASE-
Overall, great time watching with Dick. <3
Jason Todd
You expect someone like him to like Chainsaw Man, Trigun or something like those grunge-y, guns and knives animes, right? I mean, he does, but only with you and ONLY with you will he let his inner Magical Girl enthusiast ass shine. Because he LOVES Magical Girl animes. That’s probably the reason and one point of time why he wore red ribbons around his arms, he wanted that Sailor Moon experience and Tim might’ve just teased him about that era without knowing his love for Magical Girl animes and Jason might’ve flipped and freaked the fuck out and started chasing him down the manor.
Jason watches Sailor Moon, Madoka when he feels edgier than usual, Cardcaptor Sakura, every Precure series, Tokyo Mew Mew, man has all these shows somehow. He swears they weren’t through illegal means and he just worked very hard to gather all of them. He also might be a shoujo anime fan because if he loves Jane Austen books, you bet his ass would be reading Fruits Basket, Maid Sama or something because of course he would.
Also a Studio Ghibli fan, although watching the Tale of Princess Kaguya might make him feel too much, especially getting pissed off with the dad who forces his daughter into a wealthy life without her input and- yeah, you gotta calm him down as he cries bitterly and sourly with a pout on his face.
The two of you can go on and on about debating about unclear endings of animes all day long. You know the “AND SHE WAS A PRINCESS” video? That’s Jason.
Great man to watch anime with, and he’ll gladly be your Tuxedo Mask to your Sailor Moon (and not the “But you did nothing meme- or the other way around- he don’t mind being the Usagi-). <3
Tim Drake
I’m very convinced this man got into his whole detective shit because he watched Detective Conan and honestly I can’t blame him. Tim has probably the largest vessel of anime knowledge out of all of them. He doesn’t really have a specific genre he likes but he’s pretty fond of old 90s and 80s animes. He can explain the whole lore of One Piece, Fairytale, Pokémon like Jesus Tim, calm down- 💀
I can see him watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain or Key the Metal Doll because he likes that little bit of horror nature and mystery and thriller in his animes although he really doesn’t mind watching Haikyuu all over again if you want to.
Might introduce you to underrated and/or old animes like Revolutionary Girl Utena, Nadia the Secrets of Blue Water, every Studio Ghibli movie, those kinds of animes that give off the really pretty and aesthetic old anime animations that is just so pretty to watch and with really good storylines that both of you can cuddle on a couch together and watch. I bet he even watches anime with you even before you two got together, so you guys pretty much have “watching anime together” as part of the foundation of your relationship. Owns so much manga that you can’t even count, too.
Just… don’t make him watch those really slow burn, comedy love animes, specifically Love War. Not that he don’t like romance animes, he watches Ouran High School Host Club and Your Name, trust me, but Love War? He is going absolutely insane because of it.
“OH MY GOD- PLEASE JUST KISS ALREADY. ME AND S/O ARE ALREADY TOGETHER FIVE MONTHS AGO ANF YOU TWO ARE STILL TOO PROUD TO ADMIT YOU LOVE EACH OTHER WHILE BLUSHING- JUST KISS ALREADY-” <3
Damian Wayne
Damian likes anime. Would 100% go to an anime convention with you as a date if you’re up for it. He doesn’t mind (surprisingly- just for you only-).
He doesn’t necessarily like showmen animes although he has enjoyed a few, but he really loves slice of life, I feel. It just feels like he wants to put himself in a normal life and with a tad bit of drama in it like what the characters go through. The touching ones like Hyouka or Natsume’s Book of Friends.
Also animal related anime maybe except Beastars because he didn’t understand shit-?? He calls that peak anime. Aggretsuko, Chi’s Sweet Home and My Roommate is a Cat?? Damian loves this shit, he watches it intently with his arm around you. Even if he doesn’t smile, you know he loves it by the way his eyes sparkle.
Just don’t tell his brothers. He will seriously feel betrayed if you do so because he only watches these kinds of shows with you: the cute animal ones that are actually wholesome and/or funny.
The whole family is into Studio Ghibli, and he is no exception. He feels like it’s the best kinds of anime to watch with you when you guys just want to turn in for the day and huddle up on the couch. It’s one of the rare times he relaxes and softens and he’s glad to have quality time with you. <3
Duke Thomas
He likes anime! Studio Ghibli is definitely a favourite of his and he would gladly watch it together with you! He also love a fair bit of Shounen animes, the more popular ones like Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, Haikyuu, or Spy x Family. He likes them a lot!
A big fan of romance animes too: Ouran High School Host Club and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (if you two are in the mood to huddle on the couch together and cry).
Duke doesn’t mind any kind of anime so long as it doesn’t have too much horror or gore like… Higurashi. He gets chills when that anime is mentioned. D-Don’t watch it for your own sake if you don’t know. And if you do, avoid it with him at all cost because he will.
Duke also like singing some good anime songs with you and you guys can go crazy and dance around, just not as dramatic as Dick.
He would be super excited to spend a date with you watching shounen anime movies like from Jujutsu Kaisen and he would be so hype to spend time with you being a fanboy while also sharing that romantic air for the shared love of anime between you two and the love that you two share, although that love is far stronger. <3
