About Plagiarism

I left a long, planned essay on Twitter tonight. I will copy the meat of it here for y’all, as recently a friend was copied (a rarer ship in the fandom, so very noticeable by the writer and their regular beta reader) and it seems we need a Talk, kids. Links and screenshots and my rambling underway.

Apparently we need to discuss what is and isn’t plagiarism. Especially in FanFic where we're interacting with the same characters, settings, ideas. Let’s start with the dictionary and continue the thread from there (I like the word origin/history personally):

Definition of plagiarize

transitive verb : to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (another's production) without crediting the source

intransitive verb : to commit literary theft : present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source

The Kidnapping Roots of Plagiarize

If schools wish to impress upon their students how serious an offense plagiarism is, they might start with an explanation of the word’s history. Plagiarize (and plagiarism) comes from the Latin plagiarius “kidnapper.” This word, derived from the Latin plaga (“a net used by hunters to catch game”), extended its meaning in Latin to include a person who stole the words, rather than the children, of another. When plagiarius first entered English in the form plagiary, it kept its original reference to kidnapping, a sense that is now quite obsolete.

“Ideas” is fuzzy in the Merriam-Webster definition. There are story archetypes that exist in many forms. Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth/Hero's Journey outlines many famous stories. And it's popular to say that “Avatar” is “Dances with Wolves” is “Pocahontas” is “The Last Samurai” etc.

But note how while those films have similar plotlines--”Military Guy falls for Native woman, learns to appreciate her Culture, stands up to Evil Bosses”--none of them execute those ideas in the same way. Sully’s story is different from Dunbar’s not just cuz one’s a Science Fiction epic and the other a Western. Disney's “Pocahontas” Very Loosely takes history and uses the same story beats. The Last Samurai uses the Meiji era Westernization. Same ideas, different executions, even beyond settings.

None of these are plagiarizing each other though the ideas are similar. They’re told in their own ways, own language; both in the genres they belong to (Western, Pseudo-History, SciFi, Animated) and how characters interact with each other and settings. Original dialogues (variable quality).

We also see this in books as similar novel plots get published in waves so we end up with bunches of post-apocalypse teen revolutionaries or various vampires or lots of young wizard stories all at once. Sometimes ideas just happen like this; multiple discovery, simultaneous invention, concurrent inspiration, cognitive emergence are all phrases I’ve seen for it. So it happens in original content as well, and legality gets fuzzy (Also why you don't send authors your fanfic ideas).

In existing properties, this gets trickier but even “Elementary”’s Holmes and Watson are nothing like the BBC’s “Sherlock” characters. Who are nothing like other versions of the Detective and his Doctor pal over the decades in various media properties.

FanFic's in a similar position where like Sherlock Holmes we play with the same characters, setting, and storyarcs but give our own spin to them. People can and will have similar ideas about plots. Trick is to use your own words. Take the characters and make the story your own.

I have a good example courtesy of @raelly-writing. We both ship Wolcred. We both wrote soft post-Paglth’an scenes with Thancred and our WoLs. Both features the couples helping each other undress, examining injuries, bathing, bantering. My fic was written soon after 5.5 part 1 came out. Dara’s is much more recent. Yet at no point reading hers did I feel she was copying my words. The PoVs differ. Our characters focus on different things. Mine has a mini-arc concerning the Nutkin.

Dara and I both hang out in certain Discords and I know conversations about Thancred and WoL caring for each other post-battle has come up in those channels and we've both participated. It’s a stock FanFic scene to boot. Cuz it's soft and feels warm and snuggly.

I HAVE been copied before, back in WoW. My case is pretty clear cut so here are the images of my old RP Haven profile (1st, old RP website) and the plagiarist’s RSP (2nd, an in game mod to share descriptions and basic info).

This was a decade ago on Shadow Council and I think the character deleted so any Availa’s in WoW now aren’t the same person. I left the names to point out what changed. Just the names and a word or 2 to make sense for the class changes as well. Otherwise lifted directly from my RP profile.

The funny part is how the person got caught. Literally walked into our weekly RP Guild meeting that I was running and asked to join. Folks noticed right away the similar backstory; after all there may have been more Outland-born Azerothians. My initial excitement at a character I could weave into our story turned to gut-twisting rage and grief as I recognized my own exact words though. Words I’d carefully crafted and constantly iterated on to improve over time (before and after this incident, until the site died).

When caught they tried to claim their significant other had leveled the character for them and made up the backstory based on Skyrim. If you know WoW’s Outland story and Skyrim’s plot you know how ridiculous that is. Also tried to lie about other drama I knew about thanks to roommate's characters but hey. I had to be blunt that I’d shared the info with Haven mods and other guild officers Alliance and Horde. That we would not “laugh about this” one day though lucky this was “just” RP not original or academic work. Cuz if it'd been monetized or academic I would've raked them through the coals.

I felt violated. Hurt. Had anxiety attacks. They took MY WORDS and tried to claim them as theirs. Have another character born in Outland trained by Draenei; Awesome! Our characters have an instant connect in similarities and differences of that experience. Don’t steal my characters wholesale!

Then the audacity of trying to come into my guild as if no one would notice. ShC wasn’t a large server by then, still active but not nearly Wyrmrest Accord or Moon Guard big. My character was well known due to my writing and RP. Speaking of how easy it is to get caught in specific spaces...A case of a self-published novelist getting noticed for plagiarizing fanfic was discovered recently (explicit erotica examples through the thread).

One way they got noticed was how much content they put out in only a year, lifted from fandom. The examples in Kokom’s threads show how the material was altered but still recognizable. In some cases, just the names are changed as in my experience. In other passages more has changed but you can still see the bones of the original fic poking through in the descriptions and character interactions, even with adjustments made.

Similar ideas happen. Similar plots exist. Same 'ships with friends are fun! In FanFic we’re working with the same material. It’s possible to write a similar scene differently. To make that scene and characters your own. All we’re asking is not to copy others' words. Others' characters. Others' specific phrases and descriptions used to bring those words, those characters, to life. Use your own. In the end you’ll be happier.

I get wanting to have what the perceived “popular people” have. I get seeing concepts others succeed with and wanting some of that too. We all get a bit jealous now and then for various reasons. Sometimes we don't even realize it, consciously. But do it in your own way. Maybe check to see if you’re getting a bit too close to the “inspiration” you admired, maybe reread often. Don’t hurt your fellow creatives. If you do and get caught don’t try to double down. Have the grace to be abashed at least and work to do better. Eventually you WILL get caught. All it takes is once to throw all else you've done into question. Ao3 doesn’t take kindly to plagiarists. Nor do a lot of fan communities focused on writing and RP. Getting back that trust is hard. The internet doesn’t forget easily, for good or ill.

100daysofwriting - Day 1

So I thought for the first day I might just briefly outline all of the WIPs I have actually made a start on and that might help me to decide where I want to focus some energy. I have some for Katniss/Peeta in THG fandom and some for Natasha/Clint in the MCU.

Everlark

folklore series - so I started this series of fics inspired by songs from Taylor Swift's album folklore because honestly those songs just immediately bring to mind so many scenarios that made me think of Katniss and Peeta. I made a start on chapters based on peace, my tears ricochet, invisible string, this is me trying, and mad woman. I also have a bit of an outline for continuing the story that was started in 'the 1'.

I've had this one WIP ongoing since about 2015(?) which is a bit of a monster that has grown beyond me but basically it involves Katniss and Gale being raised in the Capitol in relative poverty after their fathers are conscripted into the peacekeepers because of traitorous activity. Mrs Everdeen is still from 12 but was moved to the Captiol to be married (this part is sketchy) and she still had a little childhood romance with Mr Mellark. Peeta gets reaped and Mrs Everdeen reacts to this as he looks like his father. Katniss gets a crush on him as she watches him prepare for the games. She hates herself for it but finds herself checking up on how he is doing even during non-mandatory viewing.

Arranged Marriage - I feel like this is such a cliche for thg fandom, but I just imagined my own way that the pairings happen but I'm so bad at writing slow burn so this will probably never materialise, but if you want a semi-decent thought out pairing/arranged marriage system I would be happy to lend you mine.

Miscarriage fic - I will never post this, but it's in my WIP folder. It's full of nasty feelings that feel a little better when they are written about.

Modern AU Pandemic Quarantine! - ofc, this is essential. Katniss and Peeta end up as the only people not to move home from their dorm for the quarantine. Slow burn that I can't fucking write should ensue.

Canon Pandemic Quarantine AU - pandemic a few years after the end of the war forces Katniss to admit she wants Peeta as more than a friend with whom she hunts, bakes, rebuilds the district. Cue sexy pandemic times and a resentful Haymitch that keeps accidentally breaking the rules.

Divorced but co-parenting Everlark - obviously finding their way back together

Another classic of their children being reaped and dying - I don't know why I write things this depressing. They just tend to come out in one big rush and then I never address them again.

Real weird teen pregnancy modern day AU - don't know where it's going or why...

Modern day AU dead Prim - Peeta and Katniss just met each other through mutual friends and are kind of flirting. Peeta is a bit infatuated. Katniss stops going to mutual friend parties and he finds out it's because her sister died. Instead of staying away he gets tangled up in her grief and does all sorts of practical things while Katniss wallows. Also it's E rated but not that much fun... can't entirely explain where this one came from either...

Single Parent AU where Finnick and Annie play match maker. Probably my fave Everlark in the works but it's another one that has grown so big for the 20 minutes I can dedicate to it each week.

Clintasha

Red Room Take Down - Nat and Clint are retired and living a quiet family life with their child. SHIELD appears asking for Nat's help in taking down the red room and dealing with the fall out, specifically what to do with the girls that they get out. Nat is torn but chooses to go. Chaos ensues with the 'rescued' girls. I need to actually develop some OCs a little if I ever want this to be good but tbh the pending Black Widow movie is kind of holding me back on this one too because I hope we find out more about the red room.

So I have a weird habit of writing from Lila Barton's POV. I can't explain it. I have AoU and like to pretend it never happened but anyway I have a WIP about Lila detailing the collapse of her parents' marriage after Clint retires and he and Laura actually have to spend time together without Natasha. She then goes on to describe the custody settlement and her utter joy that Auntie Nat sleepovers with them at her dad's place. She feels utterly betrayed when she finds out they are getting engaged.

Fluffy AU - Clint and Natasha in an established relationship with a son born between infinity war and endgame. Natasha still sacrifices on Vormir, but Steve gets her back no bother and it's so nice and happy and fluffy and Clint and Natasha are together and they have a son who has both parents back and Steve gets to make all this happen and he is so happy too and they have a barbecue and go swimming in a lake and clint/natasha have private time, and their kid wants to be captain america, and did I mention how HAPPY everyone is?

Another fic similar to the above just about everyone being so HAPPY. Endgame reverses the snap and instead of weird farm family coming back Clint and Natasha get their daughter back and it's just a cute moment about her reappearance and their race back to the spot she disintegrated from. (Steve/Bucky go to Vormir and Steve is sacrificed, but that fucker CHOSE to leave).

This is another one that has just grown bigger than my brain. it's based off the idea that Natasha helped with coordinating fosterings during the blip time. Clint loses his mind when he loses his family and crashes in BedStuy but finds a neighbour girl (Kate Bishop) who is fending for herself in post-apocalyptic Brooklyn. He helps her out and tries to get children's services involved but it has collapsed. Finds out Natasha is the one getting everything in order. He gets in touch. She's at the end of her tether and asks why he can't keep looking after her. In the end he does and she ends up getting involved and all three get overly attached to each other. I haven't got as far as the events of endgame and idk what's going to happen. It might be tragic.

Pregnant Natasha but nobody knows what is wrong with her because they don't even suspect her being pregnant is possible. Just a real vivid description of the early unpleasant pregnancy symptoms.

Another absolute monster - Sort of canon compliant to begin with aside from before the farm family disappear. Clint and Laura are in the middle of separating and tensions are running quite high at the farm. Snap happens. Nat and Clint accidentally run into each other while both a bit low during the blip and get drunk and share home truths. Begin working together from HQ and both get a little less sad. He convinces her she doesn't have to be responsible for the world's fate every moment of every day. Clint has a break down at Morgan's 1st birthday and realises that things will have to change. Nat has this realisation later. They begin sleeping together. Accidental pregnancy. More feelings come out between them. They enter a more conventional relationship and have baby. Baby is really hard work (colic) and they struggle with comparisons and feelings of inadequacy. Pepper helps them to identify the colic and improves everything greatly. Happy times with baby while also running the avengers. Opportunity to reverse snap. Some good scenes between Nat and Tony. A big conversation between Nat and Clint about what it will mean. Steve and Nat end up going to Vormir together. Nat is obviously about to commit suicide. Steve over powers her and gives her a pep talk about the situation she is running away from and how to deal with it. He self-sacrifices. Clint goes back to farm fam and Natasha goes back to BedStuy with baby. Clint has to tell Laura and then the kids about the last 5 years and their new siblings. Nate is super into it. Cooper is a bit aloof and cynical. Lila is confused. Laura is quietly seething. Clint helps put the farm back together about 5 years of neglect and the kids meet baby. Family gets happier. Laura and Nat eventually meet again and it's civil/friendly.

My own version of what happened in Budapest.

The Call - inspired by a post here on tumblr. Nat calls Clint as she bleeds out. Just needs a beta reader and then I would consider publishing.

AoU reimagined but with Clintasha - I'm not sure where this one is going it's like a massive spider web right now with lots of ideas shooting off, but basically it is inspired by this post and just involves a lot of hoodwinking the other avengers.

Accidental Baby Acquisition - Natasha becomes Yelena's child's legal guardian after Yelena gets taken out. Natasha and Yelena are estranged at this point and Natasha things the whole thing is a trap and brings Clint along. He is surprisingly good with the baby so she ropes him in to teach her. The three of them end up bonding.

5 times there's only 1 bed + 1 time they choose to sleep in the same bed.

non-superhero AU Clint and Nat both think they have adopted a stay cat but actually the cat has owners and just likes strokes and eats a lot so has many 'families'. They get into an argument over which of them the cat belongs to only to find out the cat has owners and they are moving away. They decide to adopt a cat between them as both are not hope that much and the shelter refused them as single people. Slow burn ensues, which I am shit at writing.

I have some interesting observations on Rachel’s development and creation as a character. She obviously didn’t originate from this blog and was actually a character I’ve had and been developing for almost a year, now.

But she’s definitely gone through some changes and I’d like to highlight the three “versions” of her.

Ver 1: Detroit: What It Means To Be Human Rachel (Fanfic) - “Alpha Rachel” - I wrote the entirety of it within about three months, I think...actually, hang on, lemme check. February 19th 2020. I’ve...I’ve been hyperfixating on DBH for almost a year. 9 months. Holy shit. The actual main fic was written between February 19th - April 5th. So, it took about a month and a half? Of straight writing to finish and ended up at around 167k words by the end of the initial arc. But some notable things:

No Howard. Howard does not exist here. I wrote this before I actually came up with him and he was more of a concept of an antagonist I was calling “the Puppetmaker,” because the concept was “kidnapper who turns humans into androids with a fake LED that gets inserted into their brain.”

Rachel’s sections are written in 1st person, which...eugh, whenever I get back to writing it, I gotta get used to that, again. I don’t wanna abandon it, but at the same time...this way of writing her is a bit outdated. If I ever get back to writing it, I’m tempted to just completely overhaul and rewrite it.

No tattoos. I didn’t write her with any, which is a shame because I really should’ve. They’re cool.

Honestly, I wrote it just because I was (and still kinda am) real fuckin’ thirsty for Connor. But then I got really emotionally invested, and now I’m locked into this fandom for life.

After that, another reason was also for my own comfort and to cope with my fear of loss and with some other painful things that have happened in my life.

Rachel plays an active role in Connor and Hank’s story “in-game” and actually takes an active part in the revolution on Jericho’s side, so all that survivor’s guilt that her current version has just doesn’t exist. She still has it as a direct result of the accident, but it’s not nearly as emotionally crippling as it is in her current state.

Ver 2: Shot Through The Heart Rachel (Discord RP) - “Beta Rachel” - This is actually still going on and is almost at 400k words, right now. We started on June 24th and we’re still going. We’re hoping to wrap up soonish? But this was my first rp experience with Rachel and I was getting the hang of things. Notable things:

Still no tattoos. Yawn.

Connor X Rachel centric, but my rp partner does some really unique things with Connor and we just vibe really hard.

This is where Rachel having survivor’s guilt because of her cowardice during the revolution is first introduced to her character. Since things played out differently here than in her fic, I had to come up with a different way of playing her, and this was my solution.

Again, common themes of loss are here. But there’s also a lot of coping and dealing with trauma and abuse that are central themes in this RP from both Rachel and Connor’s ends.

As well as a lot of focus on the neurodivergent aspects of both characters as a central point to the story.

This was the first introduction of Howard as his character currently stands as an antagonist.

Rachel’s a lot less angsty, but that’s because her relationship with Connor as it developed also led to her friendships with others from Jericho, which did a lot to soften and alleviate all her fears and survivor’s guilt that were a direct result of her choice during the revolution. So, Rachel’s much happier here because she’s actually healing and she has a consistent support group that she’s also helping as well as them helping her.

Ver 3: Detective With One Arm Rachel (Tumblr RP) - “Final Rachel” - Y’all know. You’ve been here since the start, most of you. Y’all know. I don’t have much to explain here, but interesting things here:

Tattoos (finally!)

Her arm isn’t just a prosthetic capable of interfacing and also being used as a projectile and melee weapon. She can now electrocute and claw the shit out of people if she wants to.

Full ACAB attitude. In her other two versions, she was a lot more optimistic, so she was more actually trying to change the system rather than take down the system. But here? Nah, she’s here to tear this whole shit down!

All the same trauma as before, but because she tends to start “fresh” in a lot of rp introductions, a lot of it is unresolved trauma, so a lot of that bleeds into her rps with people on here.

Howard is very much a looming presence, here. But he’s not quite as pervasive and central as he becomes in Shot Through The Heart. So he’s still there, but he’s not the focus.

Still very much a vent/comfort character, but now I’m just more interested to see how she develops and the intricacies of her personality and how she interacts with others.

You are immediately sent to restart the game. You have to do it all, again, under a new Identity. Whatever name you had before is now reserved in the platform as dead, and unusable. No one in Sleepless Nights has the same name. The bellators was the most dangerous place in the servers. Nobody knows exactly why it was put in the system, but people seem to enjoy it. Especially the whole “get drunk without the hangover.�� People loved that, because you really weren't drinking. There was no value of anything here that affected your body when you wake up. That was the main appeal of Sleepless Nights.

In the somnium, it's the world of dreams. Depending upon how much you've done for the game- you can get a night of sleep with a dream that you want. And the next night when you come into Sleepless Nights- you don't even go into your server. You go straight to somnium, where you are given your desired dream. And that's what your night would consist of. It was one of your favorite places. Somnium was undoubtedly the best therapy for you, it gave you the freedom to rid yourself of nightmares- to which you happily accepted.

Lastly, was the civitas. This was the city, where you could get a nighttime job that would give you pay to use in your server. Or you could go shopping, or spends your nights in the restaurants. All laws were applied here. No stealing, no murder, no nothing. But violence was allowed, for the most part. Just as long as you didn't get caught. And oh dear lord- it is hard not to get caught. You would know because that was what your first day in Civitas consist of.

You ran like hell, and even then you were caught and sent back to the beginning of the game. So you started a new and began to raise this platform from the ground up.

It was your perfectly not-so-perfect little world.

As one of the highly regarded participants- you were in the second highest class of Sleepless Nights- called the opulentia. The highest class is the Dominus, which is the federal class. Only those who helped develop Sleepless Nights, or took part in the making of it, were a part of the Dominus. They give the rules and enforce them. You didn't really like the Dominus- but they created your little platform, so you had to at least give them that.

Your class, the opulentia, were the rich and beautiful. The ones who had helped raise their servers from the ground up. Like beta testers, owners and CEOs of companies in the civitas, or those who joined Sleepless Nights on the release date and helped raise the platform.

The next class is the adiutares, this consists of many different types of people. Such as the higher ups in the companies, or the owners of a business in the bellators.

Then there's the Vitas, those who just join Sleepless Nights for the lax of it. Most of them aren't looking to move up, they just want to live here, in Sleepless Night. Most of the residents of Sleepless Nights are Vitas.

This was your utopia. Everyone was on the same playing field. The only reason for the classes was that people had to have restrictions as they grew. If a Novus had the same accessibility as an opulentia, Sleepless Nights would burn in ashes. Everyone had consequences according to them, it wasn't some ridiculous payment for the people who didn't have as much money. And it wasn't just bread money for those who were more fortunate. If someone was rich, and they broke a law- the bailout money would definitely bite them in the butt. Everyone was held accountable to the laws.

When the one year anniversary of Sleepless Nights came around, you had thought that you were going to have a wonderful day, celebrating the making of this wonderful platform that allowed you to get a full night's rest every single night. But you couldn't have been any more wrong.

This day, would be your undoing.

3 hours prior to September 1st.

The chatter of the radio that constantly filled your ears was brought to life as you opened your eyes, finding yourself on the bed, in your room, of opulens. You smiled brightly, getting out of your bed. Today, the game makers announced would be a very special day, in the 24-hour span of the anniversary. Most people who took part in Sleepless Nights were taking today off, to celebrate the anniversary. Because, tons of people lived around the world, and the celebration would be really hard to give to every single person, so the developers of Sleepless Nights decided to just give everyone the same time, and that's when it would be. If you missed it- you missed it. And that was the end of that.

September 1st, a year ago, you got this platform. You didn't know how much it would help you in the coming months. But, you paid so much for it, you would be pissed if it didn’t.

Sleepless Nights helped with any anxiety you had, any restless evenings were no longer a part of your routine, and it cut your stress in half. This was your utopia.

You walked out of your room, making sure to lock it, with the simple tap of your finger. You made your way to the elevator down the hall. Opulens is just like one huge hotel, filled with 50,000 rooms for its occupants. You had one of the smaller servers- you couldn't imagine how the public servers would be. Dominus have red gloves that are inked on their hands, cutting off at the beginning of their wrists. Adiutares have a tiny dot on the lower lash line of their left eye. Rapax have two bands on each of their biceps, and Novus have… nothing? Or well- nothing that is truly visible. For all you knew, they could have a red handprint on their ass.

People filled the cafe, taking up every seat in the house. People loved to come here to blow time. And right now- that was what everyone was trying to do. There wasn't much time till the anniversary- but everyone still had time to blow.

“Taehyung!” You greeted the Adiutare at the counter. He looked absolutely frazzled at the amount of customers he was having to deal with. He spotted you, after hearing you call his name. A look of relief flooded his face. He called your name and quickly pulled you behind the counter. “The rest of my workers have yet to go to sleep tonight. Please help me!” He begged, puppy eyes on full display with a little pout. Why are they doing it there?” Taehyung questioned aloud. “I don't think they can really fit 50,000 people in the cinema.” You laughed, remembering the nights you spent with your friends in the Cinema. He frowned. “Come on, let's get a good spot.” Taehyung grabbed your hand and began to drag you out the back door.

But, why would there be death messages? There's no reason for that many death messages. Right? Alongside the death messages were the locations: Bellators, Somnium, Civitas city, and lastly- Opulens. Shock rang out among the large crowd. Every last one of you were appalled. Opulens was a safe haven- no one could be killed there, right?

“What the hell is going on?” A shout rang out.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, please remain calm.” How could they ask that when thousands of death messages were rolling across the sky, written in the clouds. People started to run towards the exit of Civitas Center, but were quickly apprehended by an invisible wall. They began to pound against it, panicking as to why they couldn't leave.
