Just want to rant about Kai a bit, and how he is in Season 1.
Because I fucking hate him in Season 1. I'm sorry, but he's just such an asshole. And not a funny and lovable asshole. Just an asshole, whether it's about the green ninja shit or Nya being a girl.
And he does improve after his True Potential episode (due to character development), but prior to it (and actually during part of it) he's just unbearable to me.
And I remember that as a kid I hated him as well during Season 1.
#this is not to say he's my least favorite ninja. because that's jay. especially wildbrain jay#i mean he's fine in season 11. the only jay scene that really irritated me there was 'bro bro goo goo'. and i've warmed up to it#but in season 12 onward. hoo boy. first of all jay in episode 1 with the arcade cabinet reminds me of something my dad would do#then in later episodes jay does similar shit#and then in S13 there's all the Murtessa shit where he doesn't realize anything's going on AFTER NYA TELLS HIM!#and he proceeds to kiss Murtessa's hand after the whole fiasco. like WTF. that woman was attracted to you and wanted to have you#and you still did that!?#and he's shown to be really selfish is scenes with nya. especially dance scenes.#for example. Prime Empire Dance Comp scene where nya asks 'you know what we have that they don't' and he responds#'super star rocking jay'#or the dance scene in seabound where when Nya says she named the dance move Jaya he automatically assumes it's named after him#And don't get me wrong Jay's actually pretty good in Seabound. He's actually sweet and enjoyabe. but that scene gets on my nerves#then Crystalized is so inconsistent. Because we keep flip-flopping from sweet Seabound Jay to obnoxiously hateable Jay.#he just irritates me so much. and even in DR. guess what he's doing. playing video games (tho at least this time it seems to be a joke)#and I hope they'll not make Jay as much of a hateable when he's good again. but my hopes aren't all that high#because of that god damn video game controller#ninjago#ns1#ninjago rise of the snakes#ninjago kai#ninjago the boat rewatch#the boat rewatch#the boat rewatch notes#ninjago jay#ns11#ninjago sotfs#ns12#ninjago prime empire#ns13#ninjago motm

Ello! Can I request Fnaf movie Mike meeting like a Homeless kid who lives in the pizzeria who gives him tips and tricks to survive headcanons? Basically to confuse the robots they like wear the head of a offbrand/prototype Crow animatronic? They just chill and goof around but remain out of sight from the famous man behind the slaughter and his daughter? :3
Ever since you've made Freddy Fazbear's Pizza into your "home", you quickly learned the ins and outs of the establishment.
You knew what times the animatronics automatically started their shows, where all the security camera blindspots were, how to make a pizza quick and easy, etc.
Above all else, however, you knew how to avoid those robots so they didn't try to make you like them.
Normally, they'd be protective over children--they weren't hostile because you were a homeless kid breaking in and living there.
It's the missing kids themselves.
They've visited your dreams, and every time it ends the same way: with Cassidy asking if you wanted to "join" them and getting frustrated when you refused.
You learned what happened to them and communicated via drawings for a while...until you accidentally broke something, which made them assume you were deliberately trying to destroy the place.
So you've been playing a sort of cat-and-mouse game since, often pranking them and thwarting their attempts to capture you, but never meaning anything ill by it.
If anything, they seem to like these little games, too.
After reading some old employee handbooks, you discovered that the animatronics have a programming glitch that makes them confuse humans for endoskeletons without suits on--and they'd use lethal ways to "fix" them.
Conveniently, you've found a costume head of a crow (likely from a partner of Freddy's or some ripoff brand) backstage, and after successfully tricking Foxy with it...you realized how helpful this could be to the security guards who've applied here and "vanished".
Fastforward to when you meet Mike, fully aware he's the next guard to possibly die (the last one got himself killed before you could even properly warn him in advance--not that he would have believed you anyways).
He's understandably concerned bc you're just a kid who's all alone here with no family, and given his trauma....he suddenly feels like he needs to protect you.
Instead, though, it's the opposite.
"Slide that toolbox in front of the floor vent."
He eyes you strangely, wondering why a kid was bossing him around. "...why?"
"Trust me."
The second Mike does that, he jumps as something starts growling and slamming against the vent's grates, clearly trying to get out and failing as it retreats soon after.
"What the hell was that??"
"Probably just rats." You innocently shrug. "Or Mr. Cupcake who seems especially hungry tonight."
"I'm sorry....the cupcake moves?"
You realize he's absolutely clueless, so you tell him about the animatronics and their routines, showing him the crow costume head.
He's impressed that you know so much about this place (like you were an employee), but he doesn't believe they're capable of doing any harm until later on.
When he brings Abby, you easily see through the facade they're all putting on for her, but you play along with their antics while building the pillow fort (although you avoid talking or looking at Vanessa, never trusting her nor the yellow rabbit your "friends" spoke of).
During the final night where you both rescue her from Chica, you urge Mike to use the crow mask to trick Bonnie and Freddy.
He was certain it'll never work.
They couldn't be that dumb....surely they'll know it's him trying to sneak backstage..
Plus the mask was stuffy and heavy, and he just think it's easier to taze them.
But at your insistence, he tries it on and is shocked when they stare at him for a moment, before continuing their scheduled "show", completely unaware of his ruse.
It does make him wonder how you figured that out all on your own..

part 1 - part 2 - part 3 - part 4 - part 5 - part 6 - part 7 - part 8
When they get to the lake an hour later, Eddie is the first to come spilling out of Steve's car.
He walks several paces away from it, tuning out the post-drive chatter of his friends, his arms stretching above his head as he walks closer to the lake, stopping a few feet away from its shore.
Eddie inhales deeply, enjoying the fresh air and admiring the sunrays twinkling on the water. He can feel them on his bare arms too.
So.
Maybe the world won't end because he said a bit too much about how good he thinks Steve Harrington is.
Steve came out to them last year, on a sunny afternoon when they'd all been lazing around, reading magazines on Steve's living room after spending all day in his pool. Nancy and Eddie were arguing about how hot some actor was.
Eddie can't remember who it was now, but what he does remember is Steve casually saying "I can settle this argument, lemme see", and crawling on all fours to where Eddie and Nancy were laying practically on top of each other.
They must have worn the same perplexed expression when Steve declared "He's hot", because he then took a look at both of them and shrugged, said "I like both. I like whoever" and that had been that.
So Eddie knows Steve would not make a big deal over him basically saying he finds Steve attractive, but he's still worried, because their sexualities don't automatically mean Steve will like him like that and Eddie would never assume that, but now Steve might think he did.
He looked uncomfortable in the car and it's the only explanation Eddie can come up with.
And Steve's never been particularly receptive of Eddie's gestures, Eddie tried flirting a few weeks after Steve came out and Steve froze, whenever Eddie pays him a compliment Steve gets a little weird like he did in the car, Eddie's tried asking him to do stuff together like go on a hike, or Eddie teaching Steve to play guitar or he's even asked him to dance but Steve almost always backs down when the activity involves touching Eddie.
And it's fine. Eddie can understand, he's not everyone's type, it's cool. He just wishes he could shake the attraction off, but so far he's had no luck. If anything he only feels more attracted to Steve with every day they spend together.
And Eddie doesn't want to make him uncomfortable.
So Eddie needs to be careful not to let it show too much, because then Steve would feel forced to verbally reject him and Eddie just knows that Steve would hate that, not to mention he would be devastated himself.
Steve can't know.
After all Eddie said in the car, he'd been thinking maybe it had been a terrible idea to come along on a week long trip to a remote cabin with Steve. He'd already shown too much of his hand by gushing about him to everyone who would listen, Eddie spent the whole trip kicking himself over it.
But, as a dragonfly circles him, Eddie thinks of his friends, and he decides he can be an adult about this. He'll clear things up and apologize if Steve's still uncomfortable and they'll have a normal week.
This is meant to be fun and he always does have fun with his friends, Steve included. He always has fun with Steve especially, and he won't let his dumb feelings ruin that.
Eddie listens to quick steps coming up behind him and then a small but firm hand slaps his back.
"Are you alright?" asks Nancy, coming to stand next to him.
Eddie scoffs, doesn't turn to look at her.
" 'Course I am," he supplies "why wouldn't I be?"
Nancy gives him a withering look.
She was the first to find out about his crush, already knowing Eddie so well within a couple of weeks of their friendship.
Eddie fondly rolls his eyes, finally looking at her.
"I'm fine." he assures her "It's fine."
He offers her a smile and turns back to the lake.
Nancy gives him a once over before she wraps her arm around his waist.
Eddie sighs into the touch, her warmth comforting even in the mid day heat.
"Don't lose my fucking scrunchie" she threatens.
Eddie chuckles "I promise I won't" he lies, probably.
"Stop making promises you can't keep." Nancy shoots, untangling from Eddie's side "We should get you your own."
"Maybe I could make some!" Eddie suggests, "To replace the ones I've lost,"
"How did we switch from you buying them to this?" Nancy asks, her mouth tilting into an amused smirk.
"Oh come on, this way is more fun!" Eddie protests, almost stomping his foot in his excitement.
"You don't know how to sew" Nancy reminds him.
"Do too!" he protests, thinking of his many customized jackets and jeans. Though, he'd never made something so delicate as Nancy's pretty hair accessories.
"And Buckley said she'd teach me!" Eddie concedes.
That startles a laugh out of Nancy, "Yeah, I'd like to see how that goes" she says.
"Oh, I bet you would" Eddie shoots back winking at her. He gets shoved for it.
"Shut up." Nancy demands, giggling.
As their laughter dies down and Eddie straightens up, Nancy turns to the lake.
"It's so pretty here" she comments, looking out at the forest tree line beyond the water.
"Sure is" Eddie agrees, watching birds fly by.
After a while Nancy slips her hand in his and interlaces their fingers.
"C'mon," she says "we're the designated lunch ladies"
"Oh?" Eddie asks, following as she tugs him along.
"Yup! Steve and Jonathan are unpacking and Rob and Argyle called dish duty"
"Thank god for that," Eddie quips
Nancy laughs "That's exactly what I thought"

even other systems don't respect littles' autonomy enough a lot of the time, i've noticed. a lot of littles do want other system members to "mind" them and supervise them when fronting, and for other people to presume incompetence, but it's frustrating sometimes to have everyone (including other systems) default to assuming things like that about every little they meet.
i mean, our littles and agesliders are mostly comfortable using the internet independently, participating in relationships and sex, doing basic chores and self-care tasks, and making important decisions without much help. if and when they're not comfortable doing those things, they'll set a boundary and ask to be supervised or given help. but we are all very aware that they are not literally the age they're vibing with mentally at the moment--they're not literally 5, 12, or 17, they're an adult that internally resonates with that experience. and that can mean needing extra support in similar ways to people who are literally 5, but it doesn't always.
so sometimes it does feel stifling to be in a culture where their existence is treated like they are literally 5, automatically and without actually asking them as individuals what they want. sometimes other people think they're giving support when they're actually being controlling and dismissive of our littles' personal autonomy and, like, the fact that their individual desires and goals and opinions matter.

Monster mhin headcannons???? Or just mhin headcannons in general I've been starving with the lack of mhin content lately
MHIN HCS 3
Tumblr media
gn!reader | mhin time! :3 i'm going to let the knowledgeable and big brained people mostly take care of monster mhin bc I fear a girl like me is silly and less capable...
Tumblr media
as for my limited monster thoughts it'd be nice if their first transformation was done to protect you rather than an involuntary thing and letting it act as a symbol for your growing relationship. but Who Knows at this point
i assume there's some level of lost conscience when they transform So if there's a scene where some part of them refrains from hurting you I Will Start Eating Tree Bark.
Oh...and a scene where they've transformed back and you try to help them...them flinching and confused (though their voice comes out angry? frustrated? at first) about why you haven't run away....letting you cover them and bandage their injuries... 😵‍💫
moving on. they're on the verge of if not threatening people when it comes to co-op games like pico park or heave ho, especially if they're playing with people like vere and ais. no one's ever heard them speak this much someone needs to get them out of there
window seat enjoyer :-)
secretly enjoys when you send posts that remind you of them. the first few times they're like ? what do i do with this. but learn to appreciate it even if they don't actually reply in chat (sometimes if you're like "this is u" and it's Too accurate mhin's like Can you stop no it isn't (yes it is))
"when you're complaining about someone and your best friend is meaner" or however that trend goes. that's them. very direct with saying that person sounds like shit and you should stop talking to them
mhin may not like big, loud festivals, but i think they'd enjoy celebrating things with you alone ^^ maybe eating their favourite dish (tang yuan?)....it'd mean a lot to have someone to share with again
also!! having it for the first time and them mentioning their family and the last time they had it with people... the intimacy of it all...
and !! they reciprocate it!! they do!! they take note of any festivities you say you like, especially one that you wish you could celebrate or haven't in a long time. whether it's cultural, your birthday, your pet's birthday—mhin plans something for you and 'offers' to spend time together that day if you'd like. 'offers' as in shows up and mentions they'll be free some time in the conversation
^ more for the beginning of a relationship (platonic or romantic)... it'll take time, they'd be more direct eventually!
they care for you quietly and by...noticing. folding your laundry and putting it away when they know you're busy. picking up your favourite snacks when they notice you're running out. automatically getting ready to catch you or pull you back when the time calls for it. watching you from across the room at a party and noting where you are and how long you've been gone. that kind of deal
mhin's wary and off-put by being spoiled, but if you're stubborn enough, you'll find them using whatever you got pretty regularly. for example they'll tell you they don't Need a new softer comfier blanket, theirs is Fine, but then the one you buy is the only one they ever want to use. they will pretend like it isn't a big deal if you try to tease them about it
they don't like reading things online and would rather have a physical book. not that i'm projecting or anything of course. they take care of them too and don't lend them to just anybody
i think mhin has actual bookmarks, or would at least like them. they might also use a receipt to mark their page but won't fold the corners...
they always put books back where they found them at the library/book store. if they find one in the wrong section, they'll put it in the right place themself
they can get upset, but don't cry super easily, but that's mostly because they've gotten used to suppressing their emotions. they do their best to channel it into anger instead
mhin isolating themself when they're upset,, conflicted over wanting to be happy and letting themself drown in the sadness. but in the end they hope and survive and will continue to do so
hmm... keeps information of their family and history close to them, but at some point i do think they'd (bittersweetly) share stories with quiet fondness
mhin seems like a silver jewelry kind of person but i just think they'd look really nice with gold earrings while pushing their hair behind their ear...
they see You in formal attire for the first time and keep trying to glance at you the entire night btw. they might not take initiative to compliment you, but if you ask if you look alright, they'll say yes you look nice
...? likes earphones more than headphones. can't tell you why i feel this way
light sleeper. i think. they always know when you can't sleep and they'll stay up with you. if you say you'll go sleep somewhere else so you don't bother them, they're like ..? no.
...affectionate mhin....NOOOOO... it takes so long for them to reach that point it's literally like when a cat finally trusts you and lies next to you/on your lap You Cannot Move Now. You're both obligated to stay here and don't Want to do Anything else.
like imagine cuddling them and they hug you back and their grip tightens in their sleep when you shift around. mhin burying their face into your neck and taking a deep breath. please
if you're an introvert and you both finally get home after a long day out, it's just like. Thank god. and i think they'd understand if you'd rather spend time alone to recover ^^ but depending on the crowd there will be a gossip/complaint session at some point
mhin is one of the top LI's for me when it comes to scenes of like, fixing their collar/clothes. the intimacy of them clasping your necklace, the tension and bated breath because you've never been this close. the surprise on their face when you reach to fix their hood etc.
they enjoy sneaking up on you. they end up in some corner of the room and while you're scanning the crowd to look for them, they suddenly speak from behind you. there's a hint of an amused smile when you jump

Unforsaken, 11d
(All sections on tumblr)
(AO3, lagging behind but more polished)
While Glorfindel talks further to Eluréd-and-Elurín/Alphsîr-and-Alphlîn and Celeborn hovers awkwardly to the side, everyone else finishes setting up camp and tries not to gossip too obviously.
A top matter of discussion is why Eluréd and Elurín are using different names.
Risyind figures they wanted to use different names to suit the different lives they were taking.
Khitwê suggests they might have thought someone would react to the "Elu" negatively, as he gathers their namesake is somewhat… contentious?
Legolas says Thingol isn't that contentious… but if they didn't want history and politics following them everywhere, well…
Zuste says she was just assuming they couldn't remember their original names.
Oh right peredhil may not experience elvish clarity of childhood memory.
Elladan and Elrohir (and Arwen) actually have very elf-typical early childhood memories, or at least feel like they do. How much that's organic and how much that was helped along by family and community patching up any holes is impossible to say at this point.
Which is to say, both Celeborn and Glorfindel know about the peredhil childhood memory thing, but they don't know know about it. It may not have occurred to them. Elladan figures someone should probably remind them later.
(Sharlinnu thinks automatically forgetting infancy sounds like a pretty good deal at this point but elects not to bring it up and inevitably derail the conversation.)
Gimli as well as the Hirnedhrim had no idea that elves did remember their infancies. Gimli and Zena would like to be able to remember; Zuste and Dyn would not.
"—And I'm surprised you do, Zena. What are you expecting to remember that you would want to?"
"Maybe I want to know if Dielina is telling the truth about baby you biting everyone you met."
(Dielina is five years older than Zena, who is three years older than Zuste. The goblin-men of Dunland mostly came in runs like that — three to eight inside a decade or two, then longer gaps. …While the Fair Orc was busy being dead, apparently.) (There were, of course, a number of older yet siblings around to raise them, at the time. They're just all dead now.)
Elladan steers the conversation onto safer (if irrelevant) ground by starting to recount all the biting Dúnedain children he had Elrohir have met over the centuries.
(The Sons of Fëanor do not say anything.)
(In addition to not wanting to attract attention, Celegorm really doesn't have anything to say.)
(Maglor knows knows about the peredhil childhood memory thing, having been witness to Elrond and Elros realizing they had lost things. They tried not to make a big deal out of it, especially in front of him, but. He knows knows.)
(He also knows that two small children focused on each other will not, necessarily, use each other's names enough to be well reminded of them.)
(Maglor is quite sure they don't remember whose name was whose.)
(He is saying nothing.)
*****
Elladan and Elrohir make the nightly palantír-call to Arwen as quietly and unobtrusively as they can, and report the confirmed arrival of their great-uncles. Swan-uncles.
"They don't seem to want to talk to anyone right now," Elrohir says.
"They don't seem to particularly want to be here," Elladan adds. "I don't think they would have come if Caraxitári — the Queen of the Geese — hadn't pushed them to."
"I think she's hoping they'll… re-acclimate?" Arwen offers.
(Re-imprint. The Queen of the Geese is hoping they'll re-imprint on the correct species.)
"I'm not sure whether there's any chance of that if they don't want to…"
When the conversation dies down, Gimli comes over to see if he can talk to Aragorn for a few minutes. He needs to share Celeborn not only calling Gimli a 'hero of the last war' but calling Gimli's people 'staunch allies'.
"Did he mean my people at Aglon? Erebor? The Line of Durin? Longbeards? He can't have meant all dwarves—"
"Honestly I think he was probably just trying to emphasize that they could trust you specifically…"
Meanwhile Zena is, by popular Zuste and Dyn's request, retelling the story of That Time Four Of Our Siblings Went Up To Those Marshes Where The Border-River Meets The Greyflood And Had A Survival Horror Experience Involving The Local Swans.
****
Glorfindel gets as far as showing Alphsîr and Alphlîn what it looks like when he gathers his power in order to apply it. He's starting to talk them through the process when one of the Geese circles overhead.
"That's Caraxitári," Alphsîr says. "She means it's time for us to sleep."
He still sounds very stiff and awkward but that is definitely disgruntlement.
"If you're living like swans that does make sense?" Celeborn offers. "Would you like to overnight here, or return to the Geese?"
"…We'll stay," Alphsîr says finally.
They turn back into swans, and settle themselves in the grass.
After a while they fall asleep.
Celeborn sits down right where he was standing. "What's the strongest thing we have to drink?"
Glorfindel: "…Sorry, but we didn't think this was the sort of journey that would allow for alcoholic indulgences."
Glorfindel is not saying: Also you and Maglor between you have polished off at least half of Imladris's remaining liquor stores since this whole thing started and I might want some of that at some point, did you ever think about that!
Celeborn: "Legolas Thranduilion. Do you or do you not have a few skins of Mirkwood moonshine somewhere in your baggage."
Legolas: had not realized Celeborn knows about that
Glorfindel: "If you're hung over tomorrow I'm not explaining it to the twins. Either twins."

hoo boy. SOMA. I definitely do not think of that game often ahaha that game certainly has not affected me in any way
Tumblr media
Anyways!! Catherine Chun is honestly my favorite deuteragonist in gaming because of how well she's written (sorry Wheatley (he's a close second though)). On my first playthrough I (and I assume a lot of other people) just immediately decide "OK, she's the only other sane 'person' on this station, so she's automatically a friend", and hell, it seems that's how Simon himself views her from the moment they first speak at Upsilon's comms center. But reading into her dialogue, she really doesn't seem to view Simon as a buddy at all up until like.. Their heart-to-heart at the Climber methinks. Just look at how she speaks with him whenever he starts getting existential.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She speaks to him as more of an annoying coworker at times. Considering her attitude towards other sentient machines, I think it's extending even to Simon. She sees him as a means to an end, or at least tries to, up until she has to copy and paste his mind into a new diving suit. And then, when she fails to hide the original Simon from the newly created duplicate and he is rightfully distraught and furious - I think that's when the actual weight of it all hits her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This interaction still fucks me up a little. The distress in that "Please, stop" as Simon (very righftully) lashes out at her. It's even worse when you consider this is how most of the people she scanned treated her. They're all desperate. They hope that when they sit down in that Pilot Seat and close their eyes, they'll open them in paradise. But when they end up exactly where they were. and realize a copy of them is going to be living it large on a spaceship while they continue rotting down at Pathos II, it's no wonder they'd suddenly view the whole thing as cruel and disgusting. It's still wrong and selfish, of course - especially directing that anger at the one person responsible for preserving humanity simply because you refuse to understand how brain scans work. It's worse when you realize she never got to defend herself from all of it, and in the end she was killed by her own desperate coworkers. And now she's experiencing it again. Unknowingly, Simon's putting her through the exact same thing her human template went through over and over and over again. She viewed him as a means to an end, but I think that stopped after she had to go through that. She shares her memories of home with Simon. I'd say they only REALLY start getting along at like, Phi, which makes the exchange immediately after the ARK is launched that much more gut wrenching. The thing is, while I think Catherine stopped viewing Simon as a means to an end, Simon didn't stop viewing her as one. From the moment she tells him about the ARK, he was probably itching to get on it. Sure, saving humanity is great, but you'd probably also want to be saved aswell, no?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that this is her last exchange and these are the last words she manages to say is absolutely fucked up. You can just imagine what was going through Catherine's mind as she was saying this - Simon telling her she's "Fucking disgusting!", a sentiment echoed by people she considered acquaintances (people she was saving), seeing her own corpse with it's head bashed in by a wrench.. This wasn't just aimed at Simon, I think. This is basically her finally standing up for herself. Her standing up to everyone who despised her simply because THEY didn't understand how brain scans work. She did everything right, she saved humanity - and she was still treated like garbage in the end. And she doesn't even get to finish her sentence before her chip fries and she dies for the second and final time. And if Simon saw things from her perspective for once, he would have the time to pull her Omnitool out and save her from that.

Not Your Fault (part 1)
Part 1! Alex, Shu’s foster son, is suspended and not feeling well. Ryo is his safe place. For my @badthingshappenbingo space space “Leave Me Alone.” Original work, 2,718 words, no TW, CW mentions of past parental drug use/death, Alex is 13 here.
Alex's mom never cared whether or not he showed up to school as long as he stayed out of her way, so he didn't understand why Shu thought it was such a big deal when he played hooky or cut the classes he didn't like. Now was being suspended for the third time in the school year since coming to live with Shu, this time for calling the teacher a bitch when she pointed out his absence during fourth period. He'd shown up during her class, so why the hell did she care about the last class? It's not like he had been doing anything bad - he'd been taking a nap in the old science lab nursing a headache that wouldn't go away.
Not that he told them that, but it made him so angry that they assumed he was always up to trouble that he didn't bother. They probably wouldn't have believed him anyways.
He ended up in the office until Shu had to leave work again to talk to the principal and school counselor, and then brought Alex home for the rest of the week where he was to write a formal letter of apology to the teacher. Alex had tried to refuse, but Shu interrupted him loudly saying, "He'll do it," and dragged him home.
The drive back was near silent. Alex crossed his arms defensively and leaned against the door, staring out the window as they drove back to Shu's small two bedroom home. Alex pressed his forehead against the cold glass. It helped the persistent headache a little, but not much. They were just around the block when Shu said, "The principal told me usually the policy is three suspensions in one year and you're out. But given your situation they'll give you one more chance."
Alex could tell Shu wanted him to take this as a sign to shape up, but instead he scowled and said, "Whoop dee doo," with the utmost sarcasm.
Shu winced and was quiet again until they pulled into the driveway of the house. Alex quickly unbuckled and was ready to jump out of the car but Shu said, "Alex, wait."
Listening to Shu was not Alex's forté. He was fourteen and didn't feel like listening to anybody, let alone the prim and proper Shu who just happened to be fostering him. Alex wondered more than once if Shu was just doing it for the check and had decided he'd make it as not-worth it as possible to test that theory. It required no extra work - Alex was always unpleasant without trying.
Alex yanked at the car door handle to exit but Shu hit the automatic locks before he could. "What?" Alex snapped, facing him indignantly. Shu opened his mouth, then closed it. He looked like he couldn't figure out how he wanted to answer Alex. Alex rolled his eyes. This was a waste of time and he didn't have the resolve to wait for idiot Shu any longer. He wanted to get into bed and hide under the covers where he could shut out the whole world. He turned to open the door again when Shu put a hand on his forearm. Alex flinched and pulled it away immediately, gripping his arm with the other hand as if Shu had burned him. "What the fuck? Don't touch me!"
Shu held his hands up defensively. "Sorry, sorry," he said. Alex glared venomously at him. He hated being touched and Shu knew that. "But Alex, please, if you get expelled I don't know if I can keep you. They might take you away from me." Shu sounded like he was pleading and it just made Alex more angry. He didn't want to play this stupid game with Shu; he didn’t want to listen to Shu pretend to care.
"So? I told you to leave me alone," Alex snapped defiantly. "It's not like you're my dad."
"And I'm not trying to be," Shu said. "But I am trying to be your guardian, and that means I want the best for you. One of my coworkers said they took their sister's foster kid away when he got expelled. I don't want that to happen to us."
"Why not?" Alex said, eyes flashing dangerously in anger. "You'd be way happier without me."
"That's not true," Shu said sadly. "I don't want to lose you."
"Why?" Alex challenged him. "I make your life hell when you were living your perfect little suburban life before me."
"It's true that life was easier," Shu said, surprising Alex with his honesty for once. "But it was also empty. You're right, I'm not your dad. But I am your family now and I think you're a really great kid."
Alex looked at Shu like he was insane. "Great kid? I literally just got suspended and the only reason I'm not expelled is coz the principal feels bad I'm messed up." Or Mr. Goodson just thought it was a bad look to expel the kid whose mom died blowing up the meth lab inside their apartment only a few months ago. Alex didn't know and he didn't care. He hated when people felt bad for him. His head pulsed painfully.
“The reason you’re not suspended is because I begged him for one more chance,” Shu said. Oh, so that's what Shu was doing when he took so long just him and Mr. Goodson in the office for like an hour while Alex sat on the bench in the corner picking skin off his cuticles. "I told him I couldn't lose you."
"Lose me? Like a puppy?" Alex snarled. "This is dumb. Get a dog if you're lonely. I'll only hurt you." He opened the door and stalked down the suburban sidewalk with his hands shoved in his pockets.
"Where are you going?" He heard Shu’s desperate voice call after him.
"Leave me alone!" Alex shouted, not looking back. His head throbbed and he swallowed back some nausea that had risen to his throat. Ugh, it was still annoyingly cold for early April. Alex shivered and wrapped his arms around himself as he stalked down the street angrily. He needed a cigarette, but this stupid neighborhood wasn't the kind where he could just pay someone at the corner store to buy him some. It was too nice for that shit to fly around here.
Alex walked the three blocks to Ryo's house before remembering Ryo was still at school. It didn't matter, he would still rather be here. Alex scaled the wooden privacy fence easily and then climbed into the tree house that sat in a tree in Ryo's backyard. In the months since they'd become friends, Alex had found this to be his favorite place. Shu didn't know about it and nobody came up here to bother him. It was just him and Ryo, or right now, just him.
Alex felt a chill go through him and he pulled his knees up close to his chest. Usually when they came up here to hang out Ryo would bring a blanket, but they hadn't left one up here this time. Alex coughed into his crossed arms, which reminded him how much his throat and head hurt. The cold, wooden platform was uncomfortable but it was quiet and Alex found his eyes drooping in no time.
Shu definitely thought he was off causing trouble, Alex thought to himself. The guy acted nice, but in the end he was probably the same as all of the adults. Ready to throw him away as soon as he became too inconvenient or got in the way. Shu had lasted a lot longer than Alex had expected, but it wouldn’t be for much longer at this rate.
"Alex?"
Alex startled awake to find Ryo at the entrance of the treehouse, peering at him curiously. "What're you doing here?" Alex mumbled.
"It's my backyard," Ryo laughed and climbed the rest of the way in. He sat in front of Alex cross legged. "You're shivering."
"S'cold."
"It's not that cold," Ryo said, frowning. He took off his own jacket and wrapped it around Alex. "Are you okay?"
"Fine," Alex grunted. "Suspended again. Is school already over?"
"Yeah," Ryo said. "Mom told me Shu called the house to see if you were here. She said you weren't, but she didn't check up here."
Alex managed a thin smile. "But you knew to check?"
"Course," Ryo grinned back. They looked at each other for a long moment which was broken only by Alex quickly ducking his face into his elbow and sneezing loudly.
"Heeee' etchiew! Guh..."
The congestion that the sneeze moved around tickled Alex's throat and he began to cough roughly. Ryo grimaced. "Let's go to my bedroom," he said. "You don't look so good."
"I'mb find," Alex said stuffily, his voice betraying him. He shivered, his body also doing him no favors in hiding his apparent unwellness. *"Don't you have homew - wah... W'etchiew! Ugh. Homb worgk?"
"I won't be able to concentrate on it knowing you're up here sick," Ryo said, ignoring Alex's immediate retort of "Ndot sick." "You can warm up in my bed, how's that?" The temptation of being under the covers in Ryo's comfy bed was too much when Alex was feeling so cold and achy, so he gave in and they climbed down from the treehouse one by one.
Ryo led Alex into the house. His mom was in the kitchen and looked at Alex, a little startled. Alex knew she wasn't the biggest fan of him, the new brooding bad boy hanging around her golden child. But she wasn't mean either. "Alex! Shu called looking for you."
Alex waved one hand in the air noncommittally, coughing into the other arm. "Can we have some hot chocolate mom?" Ryo asked. "We're gonna go study in my room."
"Sure honey. After I call Shu back," she said. Alex groaned internally. This meant that Shu would be at Ryo's doorstep in about ten minutes to drag him home. He wanted to take a real nap in Ryo's bed, not get nagged by Mr. Goody Two-shoes again. He'd take what he could get though and followed Ryo upstairs. He dove under the covers of Ryo's bed right away, shivering.
Ryo looked at him worriedly. "Hang on," he said, darting to the bathroom and coming back with a thermometer. "See if you have a fever?"
Alex just burrowed himself deeper under Ryo's covers, grunting, "It doesn't matter. Just let me sleep." Ryo made a pouting face but didn't push it. He sat at his desk and pulled out his school work as Alex tried to warm up, but the cold had made it down to his bones and his whole body hurt. He tried to keep from shivering as much as he could, but every few seconds a strong one would escape and wrack his entire body.
Ryo's bed smelled like him. It was strangely comforting. They had become friends rather quickly when Alex had transferred into Ryo's school that November after being placed with Shu. Alex was grouchy and sullen and refused to talk, while Ryo was constantly smiling. At first Alex tried to ignore his overly eager classmate, but opposites attracted and somehow they became an unlikely, but inseparable, pair. Ryo always just seemed to know what Alex wanted, even if Alex refused to admit it himself. He was good at talking on Alex's behalf and treated Alex like a normal person rather than a feral animal to be poked with a yardstick. He was cheeky and loud and annoying, but Alex stuck with him for reasons he didn't quite understand. Ryo just made him feel safer and he never asked any questions about his past.
Alex didn't realize he'd fallen asleep until he heard Shu's voice murmuring in low tones. He was finally warm and comfortable hidden under Ryo's sheets, he didn't want to leave... He waited for Shu to pull back the covers, but he didn't. Alex's eyes grew heavy again and before he knew it, he'd drifted back asleep.
It was dark when Alex finally emerged, stiff and coughing. Thick gunk was coming up now, making it hard to deny he'd moved from the sniffles into a full blown chest cold. He groaned and sat up, looking around. He was alone in the bedroom, but he could hear voices downstairs. He wrapped the throw blanket around himself and slunk down the stairs, looking for Ryo. Alex found him sitting at the dinner table with his parents and Shu, laughing. Confused, Alex thought maybe he was still dreaming. But Ryo noticed him immediately and let out a happy, "Alex!"
Alex blinked at the scene. "What's going on?" He asked hesitantly. The adults were all eyeing him with something close to pity. Ryo jumped up and dragged another chair to the table from the kitchen, patting it for Alex to sit down in.
"I didn't want to wake you up," Shu explained. "Ryo said you have a fever. How do you feel?"
"Fine," Alex lied, sitting in his newly designated chair next to Ryo. In reality he looked pretty miserable, blonde hair sticking up in all directions, nose red, voice stuffy and eyes bloodshot. He hadn't felt this sick this morning, he thought. Maybe the nap outside in the treehouse while he was already coming down with something hadn't been such a good idea.
"Are you hungry?" Ryo's mom asked. Alex shook his head no. The others seemed like they were about done and Shu stood up.
"Shall we get going?" He asked Alex, looking at Alex hopefully. Alex shrugged. It was as close to a yes as Shu was going to get. Shu thanked Ryo's parents repeatedly and Ryo gave Alex a quick hug. This was a new thing, and Ryo was the only person allowed to do it. Alex and Shu went to Shu's car and Shu drove them home.
"Mrs. Fujioka said you're welcome any time, but you ought to let me know first," Shu said. "I'd appreciate that too. I won't say no. Ryo's a good kid."
'Unlike me,' Alex supplied silently. He coughed, wincing when it sounded much wetter than the one he'd woken up with it. He'd managed to avoid Shu at breakfast so Shu wouldn't notice, but there was no point in hiding it now.
"You sound like you need to be in bed," Shu glanced at him, frowning. "How long have you been feeling sick?"
Alex didn't answer. Yesterday after school he'd started feeling off though, and he was pretty sure he'd had a fever and chills last night too because it had been impossible to get warm.
Shu sighed. "Alex, if you hadn't felt well you didn't have to go to school," he said. Alex shrugged. He hadn't wanted Shu to know, because he hadn't wanted to answer tedious questions exactly like this. "You can talk to me," Shu added.
Alex had heard so many people say that in his life who absolutely did not mean it. He wouldn't start believing it now, even if Shu was nice and never seemed to get mad at him no matter what trouble he stirred up. It was a miracle really - Alex wasn't sure he'd ever met someone as patient as Shu. He was still wary though, because that could always change someday, couldn't it?
They parked in the driveway and went into the house. Shu asked him if he was hungry again and Alex shook his head no. He just wanted to sleep. He changed into pajamas and crawled into his own bed, regretting it wasn't as warm as Ryo's had felt. Shu came in with a glass of water and two Tylenol, which he offered Alex. Alex downed them wordlessly and then flopped under the covers.
"Come get me if you feel worse, or if you need anything,” Shu told him. Once again, no answer. Alex had no intentions of going to get Shu like a little kid. He had taken care of himself for thirteen years just fine - a little cold wasn’t going to push him over the edge. He waited for Shu to leave the room before he fell asleep thinking about how Ryo had hugged him and how warm it had felt.

DomKat's physical and emotional chemistry: Chin lifting to get each other's attention to kiss each other
This is Part 1 in a meta series in observing how DomKat portray physical and emotional intimacy as WayHaught
What I mean by physical chemistry is natural and automatic bodily responses to one another in a scene where they perform some kind of physical intimacy. It doesn't have to be physical but, for WayHaught, it is more often physical than emotional. However, I will cover both because they do have both - which is extremely rare for WLW ships. Sometimes the intimacy is choreographed by the director or an intimacy coach, so they may be only following that direction. But even so, to portray intimacy in such a way where it does not seem that way is a talent that can only really be done by actors that do have great physical and emotional chemistry with one another. That know how to use body language to communicate and convey intentions and emotions so that each other knows how to react in response to the other to portray their characters' intimacy.
These physically intimate bodily responses to one another from the episodes 'Shed Your Skin' and 'Whiskey Lullaby' in Season 2 of 'Wynonna Earp' could be choreographed, could be improvised. Either way, they are portrayed by DomKat chin lifting the other to represent WayHaught's desire and need to be physically intimate. Something like this can look so forced without that great physical chemistry that these two actors appear to possess. It looks real and convincing and authentic rather than acted, choreographed and scripted. As if they feel like they're the only two people in the room.
It's easy to just assume when we watch physical and emotional intimate scenes between characters that it's because it is the actors' real feelings for each other or even their real desires for one another. And it may be so that that is the case sometimes because many actors that have portrayed romantic couples have fallen in love from it and even gotten together. But in the interest of appreciating and praising an actor's acting talent and respecting them as real people I do not like to think that way myself. Not only can it come across as disrespectful to them as real people if that assumption is pushed on them, as some fans love to do, but it also can disrespect them as actors because it puts their acting talent down to real thoughts and feelings. Meaning it's less acting and more genuine behaviour and action. I never like that assumption and I never like assuming that way myself because being able to portray any kind of intimacy with someone you have absolutely no real life intimate connection with is a talent. It's very true that close friendship and love between actors can translate as romance between their respective characters but to say it's entirely down to that disrespects their talent as actors and it can disrespect them as real people to say it's more than friendship when they'll likely be very uncomfortable with that assumption. Fandoms love to see their ships performing intimacy and it is genuinely down to the real chemistry between the actors most of the time why they do. But it goes too far for me when it is assumed that it's not acting or there's very little talent needed to perform that intimacy because they think that the intimacy is the real deal. I'm not ever denying that it can't or won't be when this assumption is made for any ship, I'm just saying I don't like what that implies when it is.
With DomKat portraying intimacy as WayHaught it's difficult to deny and denounce this assumption because both actors have come out as queer during the period of filming their scenes together, so at the least it confirms that they felt attraction to one another - which is fine, of course, if they're fine with it. In addition to that is that they have been really good and close friends all the while - and therefore much of their friendship and love translates as romance on-screen. And even though the assumption is strong in the fandom that there's more between them, the Earpers are a respectful fandom and do not push the assumption on to them. There might be a few that have overstepped their boundaries and tried to coerce DomKat to confess if there is, but the majority of the fandom have refrained from doing so while still supporting them coming out as queer because of their individual experiences in portraying Waverly and Nicole and the fact that the physical and emotional intimacy between WayHaught has contributed to the choice to address and announce their queerness.
I feel very at home in this fandom. I've been apart of fandoms for other queer ships where the fans were not mature and have tried to push their assumptions and agendas on to the actors because they were so desperate for that representation from them. And while I absolutely understand that desperation and those feelings as a queer person myself, I won't stand for that kind of behaviour in a fandom and will instead choose to separate and exclude myself from it if boundaries are crossed and any kind of violation is committed.
My objective for doing this meta series in observing DomKat's physical and emotional chemistry is to appreciate and praise the acting talent it takes to portray physical and emotional intimacy as their respective characters on-screen and I'm hoping the amazing Earper fandom will see this series and follow suit in doing the same because the more we express and discuss about how physical and emotional intimacy requires physical and emotional chemistry without just putting it down to the assumption of real thoughts and feelings and behaviours and actions, and rather how honestly hard working this specific acting duo works as a unit in their scenes together, the more we can help to encourage other actors to portray this level and intensity of physical and emotional intimacy with each other without being scared that they'll be exposed for being queer if they are closeted at the time, or if they're not and just want to provide queer representation in solidarity with their queer audience. I think it's very important that we are able to show that we respect them as actors and as people because it's a very difficult thing to do to put yourself out there like that whether you're queer or not queer.
Part of the reason I had the idea to do this is because Dom PC confessed in their coming out announcement with Advocate that they felt like they were a hypocrite in portraying a queer character and representing a queer on-screen relationship with Kat Barrell when they couldn't come out as queer themselves. It made me feel upset and sorry for them that they felt that way when everybody - be it an actor or not - are on their own journeys with experiencing their queerness and I think that the courage and strength that they had to portray Waverly Earp and represent a significant and deep on-screen intimate relationship with another same-sex actor even though they had not yet come out as queer themselves is fucking incredible. Not to mention that they were also closeted in gender identity at the time too. They had no idea they were non-binary and not female which must have just made that coming out journey all the more difficult to do while still in the spotlight and representing WLW. They probably felt they were even more of a hypocrite because they weren't being honest about either their sexuality or gender identity when that's just not how it works. If you don't know, you don't know.
So, you know? I just feel like something like this is necessary to do and I guess I've decided to "start the wave" - as Dom likes to put it. So as I talk about and post this meta series, I would like to see other Earpers or other creators in other queer ship fandoms follow suit and show appreciation and praise and respect for what these incredibly amazing and talented actors do for all kinds of queer representation. How they do it and what it takes. The effort and dedication and talent. I think we owe it to them for what they do for us all the time in sincerely representing who and what we are as queer individuals even if not queer themselves or haven't yet come out as queer. Maybe something like this will help them begin their own journey because it really is a two-way street how this whole thing all works.

So originally when I saw your drow post I just assumed you knew the general background of them and was just making a playthrough statement, but after your research update I'm curious how much you do know, at least d&d lore-wise.
Personally, I find the underground matriarchal society and their politics fascinating! By politics I mean they do have noble-style houses and that whole ordeal, but also it's not murder if no one catches you. Entire houses/lineages gone in a single night per the no witnesses rule.
(Sorry if this comes off as pretentious, I just think they're so evilly fun? that if you didn't know this already I wanted to share a small tidbit.)
it's not pretentious at all! i didn't know anything about the drow to start with - other than "they're edgy blue elves who live underground" - but after reading some background i'm absolutely fascinated by all the political/social lore. the backstabbing, the ritualistic punishments, the spider worship, the sadomasochistic power plays, the fact that wearing an ugly outfit is automatically punishable by death... it's all so juicy.
oh, and i especially love how these people have managed to build a society so fucked up that severe mental illness is simply The Norm. the average drow's personality is just one big trauma response. they'll meet a happy, healthy, well-adjusted person during a trip to the surface and come away sweating and shaking like "what the FUCK was that"

I read your posts on different type of body armor. My story is a fantasy set in real life history and involves time travel. Magic to be honest is sporadic and most things are not magic. Can I just have modern armor being simply passed off as low grade magical armor due to it being superior to any normal weapons of the time? Low grade because it obviously isn't actually magicial armor, and thus fantasy weapons generally all are superior.
Probably not, for a couple reasons. Or, at least, not unless your modern era is radically different from what we see today.
The biggest issue is that modern body armor isn't designed to deal with medieval weapons. The kind of force that armor protects against has dramatically changed. Modern ballistic armor, like plate carriers or vests, aren't particularly effective against someone coming at you with an axe. Nor are they particularly effective against arrows. They're designed to deal with bullets, and while they'll offer some protection against someone with a knife, it's not what it's designed for.
Even the parts of the body that the armor protects, and the way heavier armor is fitted together, is not especially effective in prolonged melee combat against foes armed with swords, axes, or spears.
Though, the perk in this is that modern armor wouldn't have any issues dealing with archaic gunfire, assuming those shots connected with the armor at all. (Which isn't assured.)
Normally, if they were bringing modern firearms back with them, those would offer a significant advantage. Unsurprisingly, medieval armor was not designed to deal with 21stcentury gunfire. Unfortunately, this is not a certainty, because it's quite possible that the magical armor in the setting can withstand those gunshots. Worse, the enchanted weapons others are using may be able to carve through the modern armor with ease. It really depends on exactly what those enchantments are, but if there's an enchantment arms race going on (which seems likely), your characters might not get much value from their armor at all. (Though, this is a little speculative.)
Let's expand on that arms race theory a little, if you have multiple factions armed with magical gear, there's going to be a direct incentive to develop more effective enchantments. Given enough time, unless there are extremely harsh limits to what can be done via magic, any low magic setting will transition into a high magic setting. From a world building perspective, magic functions as parallel to technology, and these can advance independently of each other. If your foes have magical armor that can resist your weapons, it will be in your interest to develop enchantments that can overcome their armor. At the same time, you'll need armor that can resist their weapons. While this is happening, your enemies will be doing the same. This also applies to any spell with a potential military application. Mages would become increasingly important strategic resources as the potential edge they provide in warfare becomes more pronounced. Any faction that voluntarily abstained from using magic would find itself in an extremely tenuous position, as their neighbors, “teched up.” Failure to keep up is an invitation for any more ambitious ruler to vassalize your kingdom.
It's worth noting that this doesn't mean that any magical setting would automatically degenerate into a bipolar system. You could certainly see the same kind of splintered feudal system that dominated Europe in the middle ages, while also adding magic to the mix. Though, if magic facilitated easier communication and oversight, it's quite possibly this could result far more unified empires than what real world feudalism permitted.
The other major problem is that the modern armor isn't magical. So, this is a potential problem for any fantasy setting, whether time travel is involved or not. Magical gear is going to be more valuable than it's mundane counterparts. It's going to be rarer (unless you have of some kind of high magic, industrial revolution.) It's almost certainly going to be more difficult, and probably more expensive, to produce magical objects than to produce mundane ones. (Again, you could specifically engineer a setting where this isn't the case, but without carefully working around this, it's a very safe assumption.) So, magical items are going to be more valuable, and more expensive.
A suit of magical armor that offers additional protection to the wearer will be more valuable than an identical, mundane counterpart. Probably significantly more valuable. Even if the production costs aren't that much greater, the price tag is going to take a significant hike.
If you're an individual living in that world who is economical with their ethics, there's a lot of money to be made selling mundane arms and armor that looks magical. Particularly, if you're making your living as a wandering trader. That arcane sword you sold to a wannabe adventurer six months ago is just money in your pocket, it's not your fault that they ended up dead in some cairn, or ancient ruin. If by some miracle they did survive, well, that's why it's important to have guards who are loyal to you. So what's to stop you?
For any functional economy in magic items to exist, there need to be ways to quickly and accurately authenticate them. Without that, traders like the above example would be a plague. Enchanted gear would still be significantly more valuable, but your ability to sell it to people you don't have an established relationship with would be seriously limited, after all, convincing a stranger to pay for a, “magic sword,” when there's no way to prove that it actually is magical, would approach being a con job. (There are potential, partial workarounds for this problem. Such as having some kind of unified magical authority who certifies enchanters, but, again, that's trending back towards high magic settings.)
So, the critical problem about passing modern combat gear off as magical is that it's not. That it also looks strange (and probably looks ineffectual to the contemporaries) adds to this issue. Trying to claim, “oh, it's magical armor,” would look more like someone who's trying to pass off a cheap counterfeit as a luxury item, or an easy mark.
Now, it's possible that the armor might trick some magic identification techniques, either because of some quirk of its manufacture, or because the time travel has given it some faintly magical aura (which may also apply to the characters as well.)
So, the shortest version is, claiming their armor is magical probably wouldn't have the desired result, unless they wanted to be viewed as easy marks.

E/riel’s get so pressed when we (Gwynriel’s) call Azriel a “white knight who needs therapy” (they’re actual words), but he does need therapy though. He has self worth issues and unresolved trauma from his childhood. Therapy is not a bad thing. It can actually be a good thing and push you towards a healthier path. It’s brave to go to a therapist and open up about your feelings, to be vulnerable. It’s not a weakness. E/riel’s act like all the characters - the ones they worship - are perfect and have no flaws. Characters should have flaws. It’s okay to be flawed. You can like a character and acknowledge their flaws.
HARD agree! az, quite literally, does need therapy. or at least the prythian equivalent, which is basically going on an adventure with your mate, you help each other, you realize all the bad shit you've done or come to terms with things you can't change, fuck your mate and live happily ever after 🥰
i've noticed this is a trend within many circles, people loooove bringing morals into everything and treating book characters as if they're real people when, no honey, they're not. it's ok for them to be far from perfect and for you to not excuse their actions and still like them. also people assume that character development automatically means they'll become the character they think they should be and if they're not it's "character assassination", which is again wrong. character development isn't a linear, one size fits all thing. you can hate where a character ends up but they still had that development and they're not ooc just because you say so lol
people are online too much these days and if i were a published author and they spoke like this about my books and characters? oh... sjm is better than me because i would be on here dragging people every day 💀

Hi may I ask on how do you color your gifs too? they all look so lovely, especially with the skin color, how do you get it right? I am finding it really hard and always struggle with it btw thanks for you tutorial.
Hi! Yeah I can try!
We'll be doing this scene, and I'm going to stick to the more basic way to color:
Tumblr media
(This tutorial assumes basic knowledge of gif-making and adjustment layers.)
Super-long tutorial under the cut:
Few tips before you start:
Adjust everything little by little to prevent extreme changes/washed out gifs.
Don't worry if one adjustment layer makes the other ones look bad. You can always go back and keep adjusting.
Trust the process! The gifs will look different at every stage, as you'll see here, but as we go, they'll turn into properly-colored ones.
A lot of coloring - especially with skin color - is trial and error. Some scenes are inevitably going to be better than others.
Sometimes, it helps to have a few references of the actor/character in good lighting (preferably images of actors, because they won't have the horrible TV filters) so you can refer to that.
Keep in mind that the lighting of the scene (aka, if they're outside, or if they're in a dark room) will affect how they look in your final gif.
First, start with your gif cropped and sharpened (if you need a tutorial, here is my sharpening one!). Fair warning, I'm new to this, and I don't know the super-technical terms so hopefully this makes sense xD.
I'm working in timeline here, and this is what my starting page looks like. Those adjustment icons below the color wheel is what we'll be using:
Tumblr media
Here's a small guide if you don't know which icon is which. You can also get these names by hovering over each icon:
Tumblr media
My first adjustment layer is always an Exposure layer. This is a pretty bright scene, so we won't need to do too much exposure, but we do need something:
Tumblr media
Alternatively, you can use the three droppers over there. I sometimes use the white one (first one on the right) to click on certain white spots to brighten the image automatically, but it doesn't work for all scenes. I prefer manual!
Next, we'll add a Levels layer. I use that middle slider to lighten up the scene, since sharpening and resizing tend to darken the scene.
Tumblr media
Then the black slider to put some shadows back into the image. (be careful with this, because it's very easy to make it too dark.
Tumblr media
NOTE: some people use Curves to do the work of the exposure and levels layers, but I don't like curves too much. I can make a tutorial on how to use it if you need it, but for now, this is what we'll be going on.
Next, we'll add a Photo Filter layer to get rid of that yellow. Here is where you have to start experimenting with what works best for you.
Photo Filter will have all these options to use:
Tumblr media
I usually use any of the three cooling layers to get rid of most - if not all - of the yellow of a scene. The one I use most is Cooling Filter (80). The default is 25%, but depending on your scene, you'll want to adjust things accordingly:
Tumblr media
A good rule of thumb is to focus on a part of an image that you already know the color of. For example, this wall is clearly white, not yellow. If the wall looks too blue, then I've done too much of the filter, and need to tone it down. With photo filter, 10-15% works for most scenes, but this scene was super yellow for some reason.
Just for a comparison, here's where we're at right now, with only the photo filter removed (see how he looks more minion on the left side of his face? Photo Filter is a gift xD):
Tumblr media
Now, we'll use a Selective Color layer for two things: to remove some of the reddish undertone from his skin, and to add shadows back in.
First, hit the dropdown for Colors and select Red. To remove the reddish undertones, we'll add some cyan to the reds. Here, you really have to play around with things until it looks good. That means adjusting the sliders in a lot of different ways.

(Don't worry about how ashy and "blue" he looks, we'll fix that later)
Next, to add shadows back into it, hit the colors dropdown, and select Black. Here, I move the black slider to add back a few of the shadows. Usually, +3 or +5 are good enough. I've added +13 just because it's what I personally want out of this gif.
(By the way, you can do this on two separate selective-color adjustment layers. I just prefer to do it all on one.)

Next, (this is usually my last adjustment layer) we'll add a Vibrance layer. I do this layer just because I like to add a little bit of warmth back into the gif. The same thing can be achieved with another Photo Filter layer, I just like the pop of color I get with the vibrance layer.

And that's all! Here's what the final gif looks like:

Skin-color tips and other last tips:
For this gif, I didn't really need to go back to adjust the previous layers (for example, to remove more red or something), but sometimes, you have to keep playing around with it.
Some scenes have them very red, and sometimes, removing yellow by adding blue to a layer will make a gif look more red - in cases like these, using a color balance layer helps on top of the photo filter. Adjust midtones and highlights to have more cyan to remove the redness.
For darker skin-tones, I find that removing all the red will take all the warmth out of the skin? You have to be more careful then, to not completely change the undertones. Just remove the excess reds that come from the filters/film/lighting. (I can try to make a tutorial with a dark-skinned character if you'd like.)
An unavoidable part of adding adjustment layers is that it will decrease your quality just a lil bit - not enough to be noticeable, but just so you're aware in case that's a thing for you.
Sometimes, if you're going to gif a scene multiple times, it helps to just make note of the settings you're using somewhere so you don't necessarily have to start from scratch.
It also helps to step away from the gif for a bit and then come back to view it with new eyes. This is because you can get desensitized to all the changes, and I often find myself picking up errors in my coloring when I do this.
Gifs look different on different devices! Just a thing to keep in mind.
I hope this helps, and it wasn't too confusing! A lot of this tends to be practice, so just keep on trying. I usually try giffing multiple types of media for practice (i.e. multiple shows/movies - that's why there are so many Bollywood gifs on my blog!).
Happy giffing!

Okay, just got back from Wakanda Forever. Spoilers after the cut. Just one thing everyone needs to know: there's a post-credit scene after the first credits but nothing after the long ones. Don't wait.
Today I was reminded of why I became a fan of Marvel years ago. I have a few nitpicks but overall the movie is pretty great, Shuri is absolutely AMAZING throughout the entire film and this was a worthy sequel to the first one.
First things first, the funeral of T'Challa was handled beautifully: as a celebration. Of him, of life, of what he represented. It was beautiful and heartbreaking but so, so lovely. The entire film is a love letter for him.
Shuri is astounding and I really like how they handled her character throughout the entire story. First, after the loss of her brother she's mostly suppressing everything, probably still in shock and hiding behind her work. Then, after her mother's death she wants vengeance and towards the end... she finds acceptance. Love it.
Oh that's another thing, we see so many women in this movie. Each of them with their own story, it truly was a joy to watch. This is what feminism is truly about, Marvel. Women with their own arcs, personalities, agency, strength shown in a million different ways and partnerships with other men. GIVE US MORE OF THIS.
One nitpick is they spent too much time underwater. I would have preferred that time spent in Wakanda instead.
Namor's character is okay (I'm a Spaniard so I'll keep certain... thoughts... to myself). The hypocrisy in his actions and thoughts was clear and I gotta highlight the scene he has with one of his people after Shuri has spared his life.
I get hero movies do this thing where the good guy takes the high road and thinks not killing the villain makes them a better person or something. Ok fine, not a huge fan of that trope but whatever, it doesn't bother me all that much. What I LOVED about the movie is that they kept that scene of Namor where he's telling one of his kind that he's going to use this to their advantage, that his plans are still in play and he still wants to wage a war against the surface.
Films don't usually do that, they go the route of "villain sees the hero display goodness and he becomes good automatically". That's bullshit. I'm glad this one didn't do that.
I also loved the callbacks to CW with the line of "vengeance consuming" them.
I'm not a fan of how they handled Erik, though. I felt they somewhat... retconned his purpose in the first movie? Maybe it's just me but he wasn't doing it for the black people who live outside of Wakanda, he wanted a war and that was the excuse. The one who wanted to help others was Nakia. She did, in fact, and T'Challa followed suit.
Also, not a fan of how Namor assumes Wakanda doesn't have allies. I find it so, so hard to believe that a country as tech-advanced as them wouldn't have the entire southern hemisphere by their side. I get the feeling they might mean no one in the Western world would be on their side which is hard to believe but sure, I get it. The rest of Africa, though? I don't like the idea that Wakanda doesn't have allies. Hopefully in future installments they'll show that's not true.
And that post-credit scene... is Marvel collecting kids these days?
One more nitpick. When Ramonda demotes Okoye and effectively kicks her out of the Doras, I would have wanted to hear from her. She's a warrior who has devoted her entire life to Wakanda, and her demotion was completely unfair, I would have wanted her to defend herself.
I loved M'Baku in this one.
PS. I gotta say I was surrounded by the greatest audience you can possibly have. The Marvel intro only showed footage of Chadwick and the silence in the room was insane. You couldn't hear a damn thing. And in the end absolute silence during Rihanna's song as well. You always hear nightmare stories about people's behaviour in theatres but damn, today's audience was spectacular.
I almost forgot. i won't complain about this because I didn't see anyone marketing this movie as queer rep but there's one line where Ayo says "my love" to another woman. That's it. Marvel are so progressive, aren't they... 🙄
Overall, I'll give this one a 8/10. It's a good contained story that works wonders as a standalone (as far as sequels go that is, you need the first one), it takes the time to develop the main character and provides scenes for the audience to breathe. It certainly feeds into the longer narrative of the MCU universe but it doesn't waste time trying to keep the audience looking forward, you can pause and focus on the story on the screen, that's super refreshing to see in Phase Four.
Please Marvel, give us more of this.

Laito's emotional support couple is yui and ayato, he doesn't realize this until he walks into their house one day to teach their daughter piano and Yui's leaving the house and she says we're getting a divorce..and his life flashes before his eyes he doesn't even notice her saying bye to him, telling him she's going to get groceries. His eyes zone into the bag in her hand and he automatically assumes the worst. He is stricken, he doesn't know what to do , he's been there since the beginning, he knows how much his brother loves her, and vice versa and they'll always sort themselves out but they can be dense.
I mean he gave their best man speech for god's sake, now he's going to have to explain to their 7 year old daughter why they won't be able to meet anymore because yui is most definitely getting custody, and why ayato can't look at his daughter without being in pain because she may look exactly like ayato but she has her mom's curls.
Ayato finds his brother, tearing up in the doorway, and is like are you okay?? And laito looks up and he's like I don't know much about this love bs but you can still fix this okay?? You can't lose her, it's probably your fault so go and grovel for yui to take you back. YOU CANT BREAK UP!!
Laito is proper spiraling, what if his brother becomes like their mother spending all of his days missing yui and neglecting his daughter, what if he becomes a alcoholic, what if his kids hate him, what if yui gets married to someone else- a good Christian guy this time, how is he going to explain to his brothers yui won't be at family dinners anymore with her chicken roast, and they won't get to see their niece because his idiot brother lost custody. What if laito doesn't get to see his niece perform at her first nativity play this winter, because yui will get a restraining order on his clingy stupid brother
Ayato's just holding laito in his arms, like what? And laito's like how are you this calm? How long have your relationship issues been going on?? And ayato's like you know she was joking about the divorce right? I just forgot to do the dishes.
And laito nearly passes out he's like, oh okay like he wasn't tearing his hair out and goes tell your daughter I'll do her lesson tomorrow and goes home to have an existential crisis on how important yui and ayato's relationship is to him

wrt your tags on that last post about like guessing strangers pronouns, what do you mean by taking cues from how someone androgenous-looking presents or "flags"?
i mean shit like, a trans girl wearing a skirt, makeup, or doing her hair in a feminine way, or engaging w feminine fashion subcultures, and people calling her 'they' because there's a [transgender!] popup in their brain, rather than thinking 'hmm, I can't automatically sort this person, BUT they seem to be intentionally dressing as to signal female identification', and picking 'they'. like no it's not always obvious, yes she/her tgirl and she/they transfem and maybe even they/them transfem or they/them gnc guy presentation can overlap but ehhh. people use 'them' way too much for people who it can be reasonably assumed are wanting 'she'. likewise people expecting me to use 'they' even after I purposefully address myself w a male name, wear stuff to show off a flat chest... it's like if someone is 99% sure a person is a trans girl or a trans guy, but even ONE percent unsure they'll err on the side of they pronouns. its this subtle kind of misgendering / policing of a trans person by letting them know they don't pass, but which is like technically pc or whatever. even if they claim to, no one is using they/them automatically for cis men who fail to tick one [masc presentation] box on the checklist (or vice versa) as a failsafe the way they do for visibly transgender people.
