"Fear No Mort" was constant whiplash. In fact, I struggled to evaluate this episode at first because it was one twist after another. Throughout the episode, I had flashbacks to "M. Night Shaym-Aliens!" (the rap scene might've been a direct reference) and the Rickbot reveal in "Ricktional Mortpoon's Rickmas Mortcation."

For better or worse, season seven's had a lot of callbacks and episodes that mirrored previous ones: "That's Amorte" played out like "Mortynight Run"; "Air Force Wong" brought together Dr. Wong, the president and Unity; "Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie" was a "Get Schwifty" sequel.

Seasons six and seven have also piled on the fanservice. The first four seasons stubbornly refused to give us what we want, dangling fan theories or a gentler Rick in our faces before yanking it away. Rick started to change in season five, but it's another ten episodes before you get Rick in a suit and tie, Rick announcing that Rickcest is canon, Rick regularly going to therapy, Space Beth joining the family and other content that's floated around the fandom since 2017.

And let's not forget the big one: C-137 Rick and Morty, Prime Rick and Evil Morty in one episode, fighting and teaming up after we saw Evil Morty's once-forbidden backstory.

Some call it cheap thrills, but I call it a gift to the fandom that's patiently waited for the fakeouts to end. And now that I've said that: "Fear No Mort" was one giant fakeout.

But was it, though?

This is the most unpopular opinion in the world, but I'm not invested in Rick and Diane's relationship. As a gay woman, I just don't connect with opposite-gender couples. Also, I dislike the trope of the idolized dead wife that the audience only learns about through her widower. She's not her own character, just an extension of the male protagonist.

When the fake Rick and Diane reconnected, I thought "Oh boy, this is getting cheesy." They're falling for each other again: check. Rick feels guilty about her death: check. We see how similar they are: check. Rick doesn't want to leave: aaaand, check.

I'm also a little lost after the ending. Morty was the only one in the hole, so why did we see all these scenes from fake Rick's perspective? Was an NPC really that busy?

How much we learned about Diane is debatable, too, since Morty never met her. I guess his ideas came from whatever Rick's told him and maybe the ship's voice since she's based on Diane.

I did like how the episode kept reminding us that Morty's still in the Fear Hole. I mean, we didn't know that, but we knew that. No "Are they in the Fear Hole or not??" until all the twists in the third act.

Aside from that, I don't want the show to revisit the past too much because Rick needs to let go. If you're a Marvel fan, you saw the backlash to Steve Rogers traveling back in time to spend a lifetime with Peggy in "Endgame." He had a life in the present, but he refused to move on.

Nostalgia makes us yearn for earlier years, but if Rick abandoned his family to live with Diane in another reality, I wouldn't call that a sweet ending. I'd call that a disappointment and a waste of his character.

Turns out, Rick never had that option at all.

Well...in a way, he did. And when Morty told him what he saw in the Fear Hole, Rick ran back to the restroom. He looked into the hole. He thought about it. And then he did what I wanted him to do, which was walk away. In this moment, he chose the present.

Admittedly, Morty's fear came true: Rick didn't jump in the hole after him, he did just sit there and watch, and he didn't want to say that Morty's irreplaceable out loud. Plus, Rick was bewildered when Morty hugged him. But for the first time, instead of standing stiffly or gently pushing him away, Rick started to hug him back.

We also saw what Morty didn't: Rick smiling to himself after hanging up the picture of Morty that he kept in his wallet. He had the chance to wallow in shadows of the past, but he didn't take it. Rick chose him.

"Fear No Mort" could've ended with Rick just saying "Let's go" and leaving, but it didn't. Seasons one and two Rick would've bitched and moaned about Morty taking so long. Season three Rick would've left him there for a while to torment him. Season four Rick would've found a way to take advantage of this.

But seasons five, six, seven? That's real character development. That's what all the Twitter users saying "Wow, Rick and Morty is actually good" have been missing out on.

And for the first time in the series, a season didn't end with Rick relapsing or getting a (well-deserved) ass kicking. Is Morty going to get the grandfather that he deserves? Or will he move on, too, now that Rick's releasing his iron grip? Speculating is fun, but for now, let's focus on today.

I’m not sure why it just hit me, but I officially broke down while rewatching Prime’s death.

I think the previous times I’ve watched it, it was just so shocking. I was so caught up in the hype that I think my brain glossed over what it must have felt like to be C-137 in that moment.

For the audience, the time between the Prime reveal and the conclusion of Rick’s revenge arc was a little more than a year.

For Rick, that was his whole life… Four decades. Lost. Wasted. Gone.

I noticed that you can see the exact moment Prime becomes unresponsive, and something hit me incredibly hard about how C-137 just… doesn’t stop.

He must’ve been so weak after being resuscitated, and to achieve the sheer amount of overkill he did with his bare hands… Jesus Christ.

I’ve seen others say it before, but this scene feels disturbingly and hauntingly real.

All of that buildup, and nothing could live up to the satisfaction of the sick fantasy that kept him going. In his own weird way, C-137 will mourn Prime, too.

I initially cried when Morty hugged him, and it only hurt more this go around. Rick is so fortunate to be loved in the face of such violence.

The contrast between his blood soaked frame and the tender embrace of his grandson.

Where Rick destroys, Morty loves. Where Rick maims, Morty nurtures.

As Rick referenced in ‘Wet Kuat Amortican Summer’, Morty’s love for him is unconditional.

I think maybe that’s why he struggles so much with their relationship. Wong once said Rick’s aversion to therapy stems from the fact that there’s no way he could do it so wrong he might die. Similarly, there’s no way he could fail so much as a grandpa that Morty might not love him.

Just give in and hug the kid back, bro.

Ugh, I dunno. I’m just a little broken.

They say a good story will make you sympathize with the villain, and I haven’t quite figured out if that’s C-137 or Prime. I guess we’ll find out.

I’ve been replaying the Monster Prom games recently, and I’ve been trying to decipher why I find the meta-humor in those games funny, even charming. Normally meta-humor is one of the biggest turn-offs for a show or game for me. It’s one of the main reasons I stopped watching Rick and Morty after season 3. But, after some thought, I think I’ve finally figured it out.

With the Monster Prom games, the Meta-Humor never seems to come off as the characters hating their genre. Rather, they revel in it. Polly cracks jokes about you having to choose between two equally insane options instead of doing what any rational being would do in that situation. Aaravi gleefully enjoys being an RPG Protagonist in a Dating Sim. You can romance the fucking Narrator. And all of this is enjoyable because, while the characters are aware of the fact that they’re in a video-game, they act in good-humor and enjoy their lives all the same.

Most meta-humor seems to come from the characters resenting the genre they’re in. They joke about how much they hate the dumb story and how contrived it is. It’s always an eye-roll at the camera and it just gets tiresome. Rick and Morty feels like a slog to get through because the characters hate the story itself as well as each other. It just gets fucking tiring.

Deadpool makes jokes about how silly a superhero universe is, but he’s also giddy when he sees Juggernaut and eagerly points out superhero tropes that he enjoys. West of Loathing’s meta-jokes and arguments between player and narrator are charming and part of the fun. Because they all come from a place of genuinely enjoying the genre they’re a part of.

I dunno, just something I wanted to talk about. Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to go date Vera again.

Campaign Manager Morty

I mayyy be splitting hairs here, because Evil Morty had exactly zero qualms over killing literally every Morty in the Citadel to escape and, even worse, over having hundreds of poor, innocent, deformed Mortys whipped during his times as president (it's like he put up a nice façade but was still internally seething and had to make someone suffer)--

--but what he did to poor Campaign Manager Morty was especially heartless, and it's always very painful to see it unfold, no matter how many times I re-watch it.

It's just that Campaign Manager Morty was so good. He had integrity. He had courage. He took it upon himself to murder his evil ex-boss to protect everyone else, even though he knew it would be a death sentence. He could have tried to leave the Citadel when he found the truth about EM, to save his skin, but he decided to act instead on behalf of everyone living there. When they brought him to the air-lock chambers where he'd be executed, even though he could tell what his imminent fate was, he showed no fear of death nor regret over having to face the repercussions of (what he thought was a successful) assassination. He was okay with throwing his life away for everyone else's sake. He only wanted to explain to the people executing him, that this was a good thing, that they weren't missing anything by having their favorite candidate executed. He had to explain why he did this. He wasn't evil, please understand...!

And when he found out that his ex-boss was still alive, his face filled with panic, because at that moment he knew that EM surviving meant EM would be seen as a poor innocent victim, and this assassination attempt just made things worse.

And then he finds out that Evil Morty won the elecions and panic takes over completely, even though he had nothing to win or lose any more. Even with his last breath, he tried to warn the others.

His death was truly tragic. He was a good Morty, undeserving of that fate. It was one of the cruelest things Evil Morty has done.

I mean, EM killed everyone, but he knew this Morty personally. He set him up. And he picked him for this very cruel fate because Campaign Manager Morty had the integrity to voice his honest (and negative) opinion on the campaign's chances of success. Which, if EM listened to him and left the race, would mean Campaign Manager Morty would lose his job. Campaign Manager Morty was honest enough to say to his boss something that would result in him losing his job.

Which in turn meant that EM knew Campaign Manager would have the guts to put himself in a self-destructive situation, if it meant "doing the right thing". EM knew (or at least took an educated guess) Campaign Manager Morty would act to protect everyone else, that he was a fundamentally good person, and still, not only killed him, but set him up for a very, very cruel fate, of trying to do the good thing and having it backfire completely, of losing all hope.

And today it hit me (again, I may be splitting hairs, because it's not like EM has a moral bar anyway) if one more reason EM did this completely heartless thing was: What if Campaign Manager Morty was actively demoralizing him?

I mean... think about it. Evil Morty looked very smug in those sequences (I actually remember thinking "what a moron" at that scene XD):

He already knew what to say in the debate and how to act to gain support. He had the confidence that he could pull this off.

But he didn't know he would pull this off. In fact, he barely won ("almost close enough to trigger a re-count") and this was with him getting himself shot and gaining votes through sympathy. If he hadn't arranged for his assassination attempt, he would have lost. He must have watched the polls closely, weighing his chances and deeming them Not Good Enough at that point.

And... he had given it his all to this attempt to take over the Citadel. By making himself a public figure, he invited scrutiny on his person (whether Trenchcoat Rick was hired/manipulated/mind-controlled by EM, or honestly stalking EM we have yet to see, but it's not unlikely someone would decide to look into this particular Morty more closely). I mean, they asked him his dimension number in an interview and he deflected. They could have kept pressing into his past. This whole thing risked blowing up to his face. And even if it didn't, if he lost the election race it'd be unlikely he'd get another chance like this one. He had to give this his all, he had to make it work, no matter what.

Evil Morty, who defaults in hiding, in making himself look harmless, in disappearing in the safety of the crowd, was desperate enough to make this work that he put himself in the metaphorical frontlines, turning himself into a public figure, getting himself shot, having to put up a permanent nice act to all those people he despised, in the hopes of freeing himself one day in the distant future. He may have been confident that he could pull this thing off, but actually pulling said thing off couldn't have been easy for him.

And there was obviously no one actually supporting him, because he has no friends. Sure, other Mortys supported "him", but not really. They had no idea what he really had in store for them. They didn't want him to win, they wanted the "nice Morty Candidate" to win (duh).

Any self-doubt, any emotional wavering, any exhaustion, he had to deal with by himself. Any cheering up, any hope, any courage he needed, he also had to provide himself, so that he could escape what he viewed as the unbearably horrible fate of being trapped in the CFC.

...And on top of that, when you are giving this your all, when you are at your most desperate to make this work because your first plan already failed and you might not get another chance like this, imagine having your own campaign manager telling you "no, actually, you won't succeed. Give up. Give up. Give up."

...And he sets up his Campaign Manager to give it his all to make sure everyone else escapes a very horrible fate, only to make him watch himself fail, to force him to face the desperation he kept (unwittingly) insisting Evil Morty should resign himself to.

...I don't know if I'm overthinking this, but Evil Morty's treatment of his campaign manager suddenly feels a lot less cold and heartless and a lot more furious and vengeful.

(I will still mourn Campaign Manager Morty forever; he was the best Morty)

You strummed your fingers along the dilapidated work bench and bounced your leg in annoyance. You suppressed a sigh and checked your phone mindlessly once again. You'd been waiting for Rick in this same spot for over an hour.

[Meet me in the garage at 8. No exceptions.] he'd texted earlier, making you scoff. It wasn't very often that he didn't just jump straight to the point in his endeavors. When this happens, he's clearly got something up his sleeve. And he always strings you along this way, kicking your adrenaline into overdrive and then making you stand by until he deems the right time. You can't stay upset for long though. Especially when sometimes you're so baffled at how you managed to claim a spot in his whimsical world, even if it's not a big one.

Although recently Morty and Summer have been trying to convince you that you're special to Rick, claiming that he only shows moments of vulnerability with you. You recall the conversation from a couple of days ago.

"Oh my gosh, Y/N, you're totally just ignorant if you don't see how Rick thirsts after you" Summer sassed.

"I hate to agree with that but y-y-yeah Y/N, he really seems to care for you" Morty says, nodding with his sister.

You'd blushed bright red and physically facepalmed at both of them. "He's- no, we're just good friends. Or like, allies. Really."

Summer rolled her eyes. "You're insane, he is in love with you Y/N."

"L-like come on, he checks in on you at night and kills anyone w-who hurts your feelings when we adventure. H-h-he even hugs you."

You shake your head. "He's just nosey! And that 'hug' was one time Morty! Or, twice. I can't remember how many times. And it was because he was blinded by the Galorp haze. I-it wasn't like it was him actually wanting to."

You dismissed their ramblings as teenage nonsense alongside the fact that Rick isn't emotional with anyone- why would you ever be the exception? A pang of hurt singes your chest at that thought. You can't deny the ever growing euphoric feeling of being around Rick. It started with the harsh insults that turned playful and insolent glances that are now tolerant. And now as of late, accidental grazes of your arms or waist and hugs that were "uncontrollable" and not of his own accord. True Rick fashion.

You're so far into your thoughts that you don't even hear the sound of Rick entering the garage and brushing himself off with a defeated, somber look on his face.

You're also stood with your headphones in, slightly dancing to the beat coming through, with your back to the usual portal sound. Since Rick was inconsiderate and late to his own meeting, you've been indulging in one of your favorite past times, which is snooping through his newest inventions.

You place a strange hat with several antenna back into the box. "What the fuuuck even is that?" You speak out loud, still unaware of his presence.

Rick is watching you rummage through his drawers blankly before a small smile starts appearing on his face.

You stop to change the song playing on your phone when you feel two arms envelop your frame and a head resting near the top of yours. You gasp in surprise but know who it is immediately from the slight green apple smell mixed in with alcohol.

"Rick.." You speak out softly, feeling both surprised and overwhelmed with bliss. "This can't still be the Galorp haze."

His hands rest on top of yours as his chin digs into your head some. "We're not gonna talk about it."

Prickcest Speculation Masterpost

I wanted to gather together all of the little screenshots, gifs and hypothesises surrounding C-137's backstory, particularly in relation to Rick Prime

Comparisons

On the left is the Season 3 Deceptive memory that our Rick used to trick the federation. On the right is the scene from the memory Morty sees when he opens Rick's downloaded brain in season 5. Both are screenshots of C-137's final line before Prime leaves. In S3, C-137 says "A different kind of Rick, I guess" and in S5, we don't know what he's saying

C-137 looks very sad in the S5 memory. Prime's face looks stunned, rather than angry. If they had a previous relationship, we can guess that maybe C-137 is cutting Prime off in this scene or 'breaking up' with him.

On the left is the S3 screenshot and the right is S5. Both show Prime holding the portal gun out to C-137

In the S3 memory, it's shown to be the apparent first time C-137 has seen inter-reality technology like this. When Prime enters at all in this memory, C-137 looks completely shocked. In S5, Rick doesn't look taken off guard or surprised at all. This implies it wasn't the first time he'd seen the technology and the conversation wasn't likely centered around the creation and usage of it. Maybe Prime was offering to take C-137 with him on his travelling of the multiverse.

Left is S3, right is S5. Both are the scene where Prime is walking away.

While not as significant as the other differences, we can see that C-137 doesn't turn to look at Prime while he's leaving in S5. He doesn't need to watch as he walks away because he's seen the portal tech before, or maybe he can't bare to watch him leave.

Lines

Rick Prime talks about not teaming up anymore when talking to hermit Jerry in S6E1. In S6E10, C-137 goes on a rant to Morty about how when you let people in they stop respecting you and "kill your family". It's implied that Prime is the one who dropped the bomb that killed C-137's family, and it's what C-137 himself assumes, so he's clearly talking about Prime. This means that he and Prime definitely knew each other before the inciting incident, otherwise what C-137 says doesn't make sense.

In S6E1, we see a hologram C-137 used to help identify Prime in his search of revenge. We see this small clip matches up with what we see in S3. We do see that Prime says "Ricks don't pass on this", however we dont hear the rest of the conversation, so we don't know if it's actually about accepting portal travel or that it was the first time these two met.

Parallels

We know that it is confirmed that C-137 was in love with Birdperson. We can see from Rick's memory of the Battle of Bloodridge, his argument with Bird Person very clearly parallels his falling out Prime, with both holding out a portal gun and then one leaving through a portal. This could imply there was a romantic or sexual connection between the two of them.

We also see a parallel between Space Beth + Domestic Beth and Rick Prime + C-137. Domestic Beth and Space Beth fall in love with each other. Domestic Beth doesn't do any grand adventures, she's a horse surgeon and has a family, like C-137 did. Space Beth had adventures and travelled the universe, like Prime did.

In Bethic Twinstinct, Space Beth says "You're the housewife, and I'm the space lady, and yet you're the one who chewed me up and spit me out?"

As I mentioned earlier, if we assume based off the body language in the season 5 memory that C-137 was most breaking things off with Prime. So Prime was also 'chewed up and spit out' despite being the epic space adventurer and not the family guy.

Beth also asks C-137 if he's "forgotten the ice cream before" (had relations with another version of himself), and he says "drill me for details when I'm drunker". Which, to me, implies he very much has.

The fact that rickcest was confirmed with this line in the same season we see C-137's "they kill your fucking family" line and Prime's "I don't team up anymore" line seems to be foreshadowing something.

Other Ideas

The "Cult" One

I first heard of this one in this video

Lonny proposes the idea that Prime was in fact going around and giving Ricks portal technology in order to recruit them into joining a group of Ricks. They points to Prime mentioning he specifically MANAGED people ("managing people is such a headache"), which implies a group of people.

They also bring up the wall of Ricks we see in the S5 flashback that C-137 uses to find more Ricks to kill. It may have been Prime's little cult following.

It doesn't explain a lot of the stuff that implies a previous relationship with C-137, so I believe that the two ideas probably go hand in hand.

It's also worth pointing out that the wall of Ricks has what appears to be a citadel symbol. The only thing is, C-137 is apparently one of the founders of the Citadel, but we see him kill a large gathering of Ricks, and we see this citadel symbol pre-citadel.

I am literally only realizing this as I'm writing this post, so I don't have a put together idea of what it may mean. I think it's possible that maybe Evil Morty was involved in that original Rick Cult, because I don't think that symbol became the Citadel's until after he was elected. That's off the top of my head, though.

The "Time Travel" One

This one isn't one with much backing, however I think it's neat. Credit for this one goes to this Tumblr post.

This person suggested that maybe the reason C-137 hates time travel so much is because Prime might've lied and said he was C-137 from the future. He hates it because it was used to manipulate him

Misc.

In S6E10, we briefly see a hologram of Prime that doesn't match with any footage we've seen of him before.

I don't have any clever comments about how this could fit into prickcest as I'm writing, but I would like to include it in case someone else has something to say about it.

My Personal Ideas

My take away from all the evidence I've presented has lead to my current idea of events:

Prime and C-137 had a healthy, romantic relationship. However, with C-137's wife and daughter, guilt started to eat away. He tried to talk to Prime about it and Prime's response was "run away with me and travel the multiverse" and C-137 just couldn't bare the thought of abandoning his family, so he broke things off with Prime. Prime was upset, "Rick's dont pass on" the opportunity to travel the infinite cosmos. "Rick's don't pass on" the opportunity to be with someone they love.

alright now that i've watched it again, about fear no mort: how fascinating that most of morty's fear hole journey revolved around rick, so much so that an extended part of it was just a scenario in which rick's dead wife climbs to the top of his list of favorite people/reasons to live for and not only does he abandon morty but endangers the both of them. wild! morty third wheeling grumpily is wild (although i don't at all care about diane so that part of the episode was kind of soiled on first watch by me going "oh ://".. to be entirely honest. and i'm so mortypilled that if i could tweak the episode i would've put less grandpa in it lol and played it a bit more straight with focusing on morty but then again that's me and that would be a very different episode)

so, morty's afraid of rick not choosing him but also not choosing life, he's afraid of not being able to save rick and be someone he can depend on. it's an awful lot to take on, being the companion of someone who historically has not given much of a shit about himself and ended up hurting everyone around him with his callousness. it's a certain kind of selfishness, when you hate yourself and the world enough to turn inward and forget you have a responsibility to the people around you, and you forget there is a way out and forget the world does not abandon you, ever, only you can abandon yourself. and rick's only recently made some changes, it's a lot to look out for and care for someone (regardless if you intend to care or it was never a choice. and it wasn't) when they've been exceptionally cruel to you, when they don't think of you as capable of that or themselves as in need of that. morty's afraid of the very fact that he's committed, that he's got a mixture of affection and resentment and fear and a bunch of other things swirling inside him and it's all related to one man. he's terrified of what will happen if rick ever starts needing him and he's just not enough. fuck i loved that and thought it was delicious. eating the episode like an animal and licking all ten of my fingers after...

morty's also afraid of becoming his dad, who spent the majority of the previous seasons as a kind of doormat, who let his wife and father-in-law walk all over him, who didn't appreciate beth, who abandoned the family. maybeee even.. who didn't stick up for morty when a certain old man was taking advantage of him and breaking him down systematically. he fears humiliation and ostracism (typical teenage things, i was like that too and yet. not everyone is like that so it matters to me that i was very much like that too).. he's got so much shame, and although the settings are the school and the wider public for some of the fears, rick's role isn't exactly incidental in how morty functions outside of their relationship and who he's become. who has made him feel small and weak and stupid and who isolated him and prevented him from having the normal experiences all those other normal kids have? like sure it's not all rick but considering that by the end the fear is all about him, i feel like i can emphasize this. and sure rick's also the one who toughened him up (nothing scares him anymore, the school had to alert homeland security once, etc) but that's part of his fear too: rick's got his handprints all over him, he's everything, while rick's everything is not morty ((according to morty of course. little does he know.......))

anyway, the tragedy is that his worst fear does become reality, is his reality: rick didn't jump in after him. it's tragic because he perceives rick as someone who would never go as far for him as he would for rick, who could replace him, and by the end he accepts that. the fear is gone because being together is inevitable, there's nothing else to do but accept how they are and how vulnerable he is to rick. don't fear what you're destined to suffer!!! he's a loyal little dog! rick will never change and he's okay with that now. that's devotion, it's veiled by sci-fi bullshit and goofy jokes (and that terrible naked rap number that had me cringing uncontrollably hxsgvy) but it's devotion! except, to add to the tragedy while not really making it,, heavier, it's straight up untrue that rick could or would replace him. not jumping in the fear hole wasn't real evidence of how he feels, to morty it was just a representation of what he thinks is the worst of their relationship (the worst for him). we've been watching rick try and try and seeing the evidence of how he's changed all season, i think that makes it sadder that he's still not reassured the kid, that he still can't be honest or open enough to untangle the knot at the center of morty. that he tied

and yet, if i wasn't already reassured that rick's also committed, if not to morty personally then to the family and to making a continuous effort to improve, i would be reasured by how he didn't jump in at the end and instead took a picture of his grandson out of his wallet and pinned it to the 'went in the hole' board (lol). he had a picture in his wallet, god. he finally listened, he listened to morty who said it's not worth it, not even if diane is there, he chose not to immerse himself in his fears, his past and his wounds, and i would even say he chose not to go where morty couldn't follow. he chose his current reality and admitted morty is braver than him by pinning the picture, he wasn't condescending about morty running and jumping by himself. and most importantly, most cuckoo bananas of all, most 'kata is not going to be feeling well for a while' about the episode, when morty hugged him, he, for the first time!!, timidly started hugging back. and then morty immediately let go and pushed him away because he can't imagine a rick that hugs back, that loves him like he loves rick, he's so scared of the part of himself that wants to believe in that level of respect and care and reciprocation, the part that craves that. what the fuuuuck

rick's only recently started loosening his claws and thinking of how he could do right by his grandson and by others in general, it hasn't caught up with him yet that while morty does see him and does assess him accurately, he's not a mind reader and he's got insecurities and rick's at the center of them and well, you could say, you could say he should take responsibility for what he's done ('take responsibility' NOT in a canceling rick sanchez on twitter unless he repents for his grooming crimes way but in a waggling my eyebrows way forever and ever). ngl i wasn't super satisfied by the rest of the season as it was coming out but i'm excited to see where they take this, how these characters will develop further. and i was very happy to see an episode just about morty's side of the equation, i've been fed <3

There are literally tears streaming down my face right now, and I wasn't even expecting to care about the episode that much. Once I processed what the show is trying to communicate with Rick's inner stagnance and grief, I started balling with the music at the end that was meant to portray the fact that he realized now that now that there's nothing left to do or anything to act on or to put all that energy to there's nothing left except for the hardest battle to fight, which is the acceptance of the fact that he can't get his wife or anything back.

This is such a perfect portrayal of what inner depression feels like with nowhere for it to go or anyone to talk to about it because it's just something you have to accept.

Rick is such an incredibly good portrayal of depression and grief because, especially with this last couple of seconds when Morty thinks that he's satisfied, but there's nothing that you can do about emotional grief and the fact that you can never get back what you lost, especially with something as profound as what Rick obviously considers the love of his life. The feeling is like nothing else; and even worse, it's the loneliest feeling in the world because nobody knows what it feels like to carry that grief every single day and it's profound and constant battle except for yourself.

It's the worst feeling and the heaviest feeling in the world for Rick to realize there's nothing left to do-he still didn't have his Diane back, and his grief is still full of nothing but what he can't help but feel is a cheap emulation of the life that he should have had. If you ever genuinely grieved over anything that you can never get back and there's nothing left but emptiness to reflect over it, I don't know how you couldn't be incredibly touched by Rick's character. His story is such a stark and jarringly incredibly written story over long-term grief and how it never really heals or gets better, but is a weight that you care with you for the rest of your life everyday, every moment.

I remember when I watched the first unity episode I was literally paralyzed from how much it touched me once we got more information about the fact that the reason why he went home and tried to terminate himself was because he had this a lifelong grief that he was carrying with him that he still is. I don't think in my life, literally, I have ever been so touched or so abrasively paralyzed by the idea of someone suffering from a young age all the way till 70 and never getting over it, because, if your brain is wired a certain way, some people truly never get over tragedy.

This show is so goofy and it obviously doesn't take itself seriously, but somehow it managed to pull up one of the most compelling paralyzingly impactful characters that I've ever consumed in media in my life.

Need to rescue Space odyssey from film bros*. As it’s sort of left the film with a reputation of having a bunch of guys “you have to have a high IQ to understand Rick and Morty” levels of BS around it where they 1. Are absolutely surface level analyzing 2. Got the surface level stuff wrong too

Like I cannot stress enough that yes 2001 is a bit of a artsy drag to get through sometimes but it absolutely is not what these people are trying to make it out to be. There’s so much more to the series and it takes a watch or too but once you get it - you get it.

Maybe we can shoo them away by revealing it’s always been “woke”? Idk something about having an optimistic view of the future where everyone gets a long for scientific discovery, evolution and stopping nuclear risk forever. Something about the fact the computer is explicitly not evil just mentally ill. They even spell this out there’s no excuse to keep saying this.

Something about the second book/film having a bisexual couple as main characters. Russians are good guys, Racism bad, Women smart, and that he sort of accidentally just makes a lot of character closeted gay (or bi) from trying WAY to hard to make them seem straight (between Dave’s situationship and crazzyyyy women divorcing characters for noooo reason they really wanted to stay together see it’s not their fault or anything…)

I really admire the specific character development of their dynamic. What I appreciate about this show is how the whole family goes through character development. I think Rick from the first season easily recognized the toxicity of Jerry and immediately developed a disliking to him. But the thing is despite Jerry lacking intelligence, he continues throughout the show to also recognize Rick's toxic traits. Rick's distaste for Jerry partially comes from a concern for the rest of his family in how Jerry treats them (his codependency, his negligence of the kids, manipulative behaviors, etc). But in turn Jerry recognizes how Rick's sci Fi involvement has put the family in danger.

In the Whirly Dirly we see Rick genuinely try to connect with Jerry despite their history. Jerry is Morty's dad so to a degree he attempts connecting with him. Jerry messed up, and in the end of the episode recognized he needed to change for himself and his family. Rick also recognized his controlling behavior. And by the end of season 3 we see Rick come to terms with Jerry being part of his family (to a degree).

In Amortycan Graffiti, Rick did something blatantly manipulative to benefit himself and to use Jerry. Throughout the episode he fronts as someone who only cares for his daughter but we see at the end of the episode he apologizes and even admits he loves Jerry.

Season 6 really brings this to light as Rick spent his own free time to look into something that only Jerry cared about. He also frowned upon the way the kids treated Jerry in the beginning of the episode. He has his little outburst at the end (punching Jerry) but that doesn't take away from the fact that he has outgrown his hatred for Jerry and does genuinely care about him. (I know Rick does a lot of mental gymnastics to act like he doesn't care, but we all know he does.) Rick's character development is so fun to watch throughout this series.

Nothing could have prepared me for the plot of "Wet Kuat Amortican Summer." The title reveal made it look like a mindblowers episode. The cold open looked like the setup for standard Summer and Morty shenanigans. Turns out, we were in for a "Taken"/"Total Recall" mashup parody--and since I've never seen "Total Recall," I had to pause the episode to learn what a Kuato is.

I guess this "Unmortricken" scene wasn't just a gag; it was foreshadowing.

It never fails: when Beth, Space Beth or Summer enter the room, the word "no" leaves Rick's vocabulary. He might sigh, roll his eyes, demand favors or pretend that he has better things to do, but outright refuse? Whether Summer's demanding gadgets or Beth's probing him with tongs, Rick always gives in.

He bickers with Summer, but he also approves her choice of gadget, trusts her with important tasks and eggs her on when she teases Morty. He trusts her instincts in the fight between Morty and the Kuato on the boat and believes her when she relays Morty's thoughts.

Like grandfather, like granddaughter: Rick beats up a bunch of guys for information only to run into Summer doing the same thing on Morty's behalf. He never has to worry about her.

They have a blast working together, too. Rick banters with her, shows off his tools, announces that he wants to kick down a door (bad idea) and flat-out says "I treat you like an equal because I respect you." We knew that, but it's rewarding to see Rick say it outright. He's starting to realize that it's OK to tell people that he cares.

Likewise, Rick's trauma is changing. He's showing "normal" signs of depression, i.e. drinking until he falls asleep on the couch. That's still unhealthy, but since past meltdowns involves murderous sci-fi rampages, maybe he's remembering what it's like to feel human.

I was a little disappointed that the story sidelined Morty again. Still, he took charge when he had the chance, even as a weird mutant larva. The series tends to forget that Morty and Summer are teenagers, so I've enjoyed revisiting their high school and seeing characters that had disappeared a few seasons ago.

Summer's a delight to watch because she's unstoppable. She jumps into wacky situations and rolls with whatever life throws at her. Rick doesn't just respect her--I think that he wants to be like her.

She's tough, curious and resourceful, always up for an adventure and trying new technological enhancements. But unlike Rick, she doesn't let self-pity consume her. Sometimes, she cries, breaks down and throws a fit, but she always gets up and moves on.

I mean, could you imagine Summer drinking until she falls asleep on the couch for years, not just for a couple of days after a break-up? Or ranting that she hates herself? Summer's not a victim. She's a survivor.

Rick could learn from that. In fact, maybe he should sit her down and ask her how she does it. Summer never misses a chance to flaunt her traits--and she doesn't even need that attribute slider. Anyone who can't see what makes Summer great is missing out!

Something that’s always bothered me is the presentation of the infamous ‘Mr. Jellybean’ scene in Meeseeks and Destroy versus the Planetina plotline in A Rickconvenient Mort.

On first watch, we know Mr. Jellybean is terrible. In my opinion, I always thought they handled that whole plotline rather well. It wasn’t played for laughs or made light of, we see the emotional effect on Morty, they don’t attempt to make the predator sympathetic, and we see Rick step up as ‘Grandpa’ for one of the first times ever— to kill a pedophile, no less. Pretty strong morality alignment on that one.

Suddenly, though, when the predator is no longer an older man, but an older woman, it’s… shitty, sure, but not explicitly wrong.

On my first watch, I thought A Rickconvenient Mort was pretty blatantly a statement piece on grooming. Planetina follows textbook grooming tactics, including lovebombing, isolation, manipulation, and gaslighting. She plays into the classic ‘very mature young man.' We even have Beth as a voice of reason, finally stepping up to the plate to protect her son after what seems to be years of emotional neglect. We watch that very neglect backfire on her concern and push Morty further into this relationship. I initially thought it was a play on grooming the viewer, as well, because of the way it’s told essentially from Morty’s ‘puppy love’/‘first love’ point of view and leaves you feeling just the right amount of unsettled after the ending.

So, you could imagine my surprise when I realized that not everyone (in fact, less people than I had expected) initially clocked Planetina as a sketchy/predatory character.

So, I did what any great journalist would do— rewatched. And rewatched. And rewatched.

I wanted to form a nuanced opinion, but I came out on the other side wondering why we never got a moment with Planetina that clearly shows us she’s a condemnable character in the relationship with Morty and not just because of her methods of activism.

I think we’re actually supposed to agree with Morty in this scene, which was not my first reaction.

The age difference is obviously something they intended to be a main plot point for this storyline, as well. The explicit references to it (Morty's age, in particular) were put there for a reason, from the beginning of the episode all the way to the climax.

In a lot of ways, it makes sense to assume that maybe they didn't want to explicitly state it was wrong (though, they do through Beth, in my opinion).

That would explain why so much of A Rickconvenient Mort is set up using textbook grooming tactics; why we never see Planetina outright condemned, but see Morty emotionally destroyed and confused; why we’re (arguably) supposed to agree with Morty over Beth; why we follow Planetina all the way up to when her facetious face of peace and ambivalence crumbles.

Of course, I’m not trying to assume anything, but it does make me wonder what leads someone to write a character in this way— and even promote her as a character at times (like this post, which is captioned 'Tag your Planetina').

Then again, maybe my initial interpretation was correct and all of this was the result of a conscious choice to write and direct an episode from the point of view of Morty as a victim. I mean, it wouldn’t be too far off to assume something like that as we’ve seen them do it time and time again, just with Rick as the abuser. Think of Mortynight Run, The Vat of Acid Episode, and the new infamous episodes: A Rick in King Mortur’s Mort & Ricktional Mortpoon’s Rickmas Mortcation, just to name a few.

Maybe A Rickconvenient Mort is another one of the episodes intended to show Morty’s perspective and frame his loss of innocence as he views it, not as adults/outsiders view it.

It could be a cool contrast between how Rick protects Morty from these sorts of situations versus how Beth does.

(Disclaimer: I’m NOT saying that there aren’t different types of abuse and different appearances to abusers/predators! I just feel like both of these types of abuse/assault can be explicitly depicted as wrong.)

Did anyone else think that Rick was just some random old guy and not at all related to Morty before you watched the show? Idk why I thought that tho… I also thought it’d be one of those shows where Morty would have to hide the fact that he went on all these adventures, I’m rlly glad it wasn’t like that cuz I hate shows like that sm they get so annoying and repetitive! It’s always “oh no!
