Good can crop up anywhere and why Tony Stark (as a good person) isn’t as unrealistic as you may think
So I recently saw a post say that there is no such thing as a cis white male (born into money) who is a good person and that this is the most unrealistic thing about Tony Stark and other rich heroes of Marvel.  Though yes, “It’s harder for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter Heaven” I think we have forgotten that there are other rich people in the world besides Donald Trump.
Prince Harry of the British Royal Family is an all-around nice guy from the things I’ve read about him.   He was born to wealth.  “If he’s so good why is he still rich?”  Well, the British Royalty are essentially figureheads.  They are born with the obligation of retaining that title and the properties of the royal family.  In other worlds they are literally not allowed to give away everything they own and live in poverty even if they really want to do that.   Jim Henson was born to a fairly well off household.  But his real claim to fame was the creation of The Muppets.   He created shows like Fraggle Rock to teach things like diversity and racial harmony.  He did many projects for free and forbid the characters he created for Sesame Street to be used for corporate greed.  He didn’t even want the Muppets used in commercials. (He would have hated the famously memed Lipton Ad).  It was only under a great deal of pressure that he allowed toys to be made of his characters because he knew children wanted them and he simply wasn’t allowed the manufacture and distribute them for free. (His investors wouldn’t let him).   He also gave a great deal to charity.  Rock star David Bowie founded an art foundation for struggling artists who couldn’t afford the opportunities that he, himself, had. There has been some posthumous claims of bad behavior on Bowie’s part such as sleeping with underage groupies, ect.  However the very groupie he’s accused of having slept with has admitted she lied about her age and was friends with him until his death.  She never considered herself a victim.  And our cancel culture needs to consider circumstances.  If a twenty-something rock musician is told a groupie is over eighteen in 1969 he’s going to believe it.  I had that I felt the need to have to add this but I know how Tumblr is... Dave Thomas (founder of Wendy’s) was adopted into a wealthy family when he was just a baby.  Though he never knew poverty he gave more than half his wealth to fund orphan related charities.  By the way, Tony Stark was adopted in the comics, something they leave out in the movies.   Keanu Reeves is of mixed racial background however one can easily argue he has played some of the “whitest” characters in literary history. (Jonathan Harker in Dracula). :-P   Anyway, I list him because he is universally regarded as a good man. His family did have money.  But he is a good and kind man and deserves credit.  He is “white passing” so to say “he doesn’t count because he’s not really white” doesn’t work for me.
Bill Gates WAS born to wealth and became wealthier as one of the founders of Microsoft.  He eventually hired people just to help him find out what charities best to dump his money into since he made more money than most people know what to do with.
J. K. Rowling. I know.  I know she’s a woman but I felt she’s worth listing. Despite far-fetched and deeply exaggerate stories implying that she “wrote to keep warm” or “lived without heating” or “was on welfare” the truth isn’t as much a rags to riches story as people want to believe.  Her parents were a science technician and airline engineer. “ In a 2001 BBC interview, Rowling denied the rumour that she wrote in local cafés to escape from her unheated flat, pointing out that it had heating.“   She always had money, even when jobless.  That’s how she had time to write.   She had clinical depression and considered herself a failure at a young age because of a failed marriage and no career but she wasn’t broke the way many people like to pretend when discussing her origin.  After the success of the Harry Potter books Rowling donated almost all her wealth to charity and was the first person ever to be knocked out of the top ten billionaires of Europe list just because she gave so much of her money away.
Don’t let our current “Pre-French Revolution” culture get to you.  Good people can crop up anywhere, you need to give people the chance to show their kindness rather than automatically assume someone is evil because of their race, gener, sexual orientation, or financial status.  Good can come from anywhere.
There’s an old legend that a cruel old witch spit out her own rotten teeth in a forest.  Where those teeth fell a great gree grew with the best apples anyone had ever tasted.  And that was proof that good can come from someone or something evil.
It’s wrong to judge someone based on where they came from.  Yes, good wealthy people are rare, even rarer if they are born to it.  But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
And we (as a culture) create characters like Tony Stark so there are people to admire and aspire to be like.   It’s not just to trust and assume the wealthy always have our best intentions in mind.  Sometimes these characters are instruction manuals FOR the wealthy.  Look how much the character was a positive influence on Robert Downey Jr. himself.
Just because the worst example of wealth is currently sitting in the Oval office doesn’t mean they’re all like that.   It’s easy to say “If I was rich I’d give all my money away” but many wealthy people, once they have families and employees under them they don’t want to let them down, to suddenly leave them jobless, or their own families in potentially unstable living situations.  Poverty is scary and many wealthy have imagination enough to know this.  That’s why people like J. K. Rowling give away a great deal, but enough to be poor, herself.   It’s not evil to be afraid of ending up in a bad situation and still wanting to help people in that situation without putting yourself in that situation too.   Also many do more good in the limelight than in obscurity because they become role models for others in similar situations to themselves, like all the good work Princess Diana did.

Dear Chocolatier Letter
Hey guys, I’m participating in the chocolate box fic and art exchange and this is my letter. (Also good if anyone really wants to write me a fic. Haha) Under the cut ‘cause it’s LONG.
Hi author. I’m glad you decided to join this challenge. I’m sure I’ll love anything you want to write for me. Feel free to ignore any of my suggestions. I actually had some trouble thinking up any prompts for some pairings so if you’ve got an idea you really want to write, I can’t wait to read it.
General fic likes:
Stuff that applies to both romantic and platonic:
Fluff.
Humor.
Kindness and helping others.
Cuddles and snuggles.
Cozy scenes.
Bedsharing.
Casual touching.
Little soft and/or quiet moments between friends or significant others.
Characters sharing a love of music or movies or books or hobbies.
Pet owners.
Cute kids when those kids are canon children of requested characters.
Living together, either platonically or romantically.
People being really good at what they do and their friends/partners being impressed.
Characters who speak languages other than English slipping into those languages occasionally.
Teaching each other.
Communities supporting each other.
Everyone being accepting of the characters and their differences and/or relationships.
Women who get stuff done.
Bi and Ace-spectrum Headcanons.
Shippy stuff:
Soulmates (both common and creative varieties),
The Soulmate Goose of Enforcement,
Polyamory.
Friends to lovers.
Rivals to lovers.
Annoying each other constantly to lovers.
Established relationships.
Couples knowing each other really well and doing things the other one likes just because.
“Man I really love my wife” guys.
Asking before kissing someone.
Stopping a kiss or a touch immediately when asked.
Surprise kisses in an established relationship.
Weddings.
Platonic/familial stuff:
Becoming friends.
Insta-friends,
Friends who stay friends (they don’t become romantic and they don’t stop enjoying each other’s company).
Found families.
True companions.
Healthy families of origin.
DNWs:
Any sort of death (Exception under Highway to Heaven.)
Abuse of any sort.
Anything that AO3 has under major warnings.
Unhealthy relationships.
Character bashing.
Explicit sex (implied or referenced sex between consenting adults is fine).
Mpreg.
Non-canonical pregnancy.
Discrimination or bigotry unless in the context of characters working to end it.
Unhappy ending.

Fandom Specific:
Enchanted Forest Chronicles:
Pairings Requested: Cimorene/Mendanbar, Daystar/Shiara, Morwen/Telemain
Tumblr Tag for Fandom: Enchanted Forest Chronicles
Fandom Specific Likes: Mentions/Appearances of Alianora. Morwen’s cats being snarky.
Fandom Specific DNW: A story where the focus is on the time between Calling On Dragons and Talking To Dragons.
Optional Prompts by pairing:
- Cimorene/Mendanbar: We don’t get to see very much of their married life so I would love to see some fluff taking place after their wedding but before Book 3.
- Daystar/Shiara: I nominated these two specifically so I could suggest this prompt. In an AU where they found some way to rescue Mendanbar sooner and Daystar grew up as the prince knowing both of his parents, how does this effect his and Shiara’s first meeting? Do they get along better or worse? Why is Daystar out in the forest at the right time to find her?
- Morewen/Telemain: I am down for basically anything with these two as long as it’s fun. Growing up together. Being classmates in magic school. Quests/adventures. Spending time together between adventures. Married life. Anything that appeals to you.
How exactly did they manage to get engaged? I would love to get the story of what conversations happened that we aren’t shown.
-
Harry Potter:
(I put ship names on these so it’s easier to read)
Pairings Requested: Ginny/Harry/Hermione/Luna/Neville/Ron (Sixpack), Alicia Spinnet/Angelina Johnson/Fred Weasley/George Weasley/Katie Bell/Lee Jordan/Oliver Wood (Quiddich OT7)
Tumblr Tag for Fandom: Harry Potter
Fandom Specific Likes: Everybody lives. The Room of Requirement being a romantic place. I didn’t request her, but I kind of love the idea of Katie’s friend Leanne dating Katie and one or more of her partners as well.
Fandom Specific DNW: Not exactly fandom specific but no incest. The siblings in these relationships are just dating the same people.
Optional Prompts by pairing:
- Sixpack: Helping each other recover from everything that happened to them after the end of series.
The six of them having some nice downtime when there’s nothing they need to be doing right that moment and just enjoying each other’s company.
Trying to work out parenting when there’s six parents.
- Quiddich OT7: I am so starved for content for this ship that I don’t even have interesting prompts, I just want content. But here are my thoughts:
Celebrating after a win.
Hanging out playing Exploding Snap or something. Studying together.
Feeling down after a loss and Fred and George decide to cheer up their partners by doing silly things and maybe the others joining in.
- Applies to either or both: Trying to visit the Burrow with all of their partners and things getting crowded.
-
Highway to Heaven:
Pairings Requested: Jonathan/Jane | Jennifer, Jonathan & Mandy
Fandom Specific Likes: Jonathan is an angel but sometimes he’s still painfully human. (E.G. Getting too emotionally involved with an assignment, his crisis of faith in We Have Forever, his reaction to Mark getting hurt in Going Home, Going Home.) I just really like that Jonathan isn’t perfect and makes mistakes and has strong emotions just like the rest of us.
Exception to no character death: I’m okay with it in relation to Jonathan and Jane, but I don’t want it to be the focus or the ending. I need to see them as angels afterwards if their deaths come up.
Fandom Specific DNW: Not a hugely important thing, but I would prefer Jonathan and Jennifer not sleep together (except literally) since he doesn’t know that she’s Jane.
Optional Prompts by pairing:
- Jonathan/Jane: I am down with basically any story for these two that you want to tell.
How they fell in love. Scenes from their marriage. Missing scenes between the two in Keep Smiling.
What it was like for Jane to become Jennifer and be given the first assignment of helping her husband regain his faith? A missing scene from their two months together.
Something where they meet again later, either between assignments, sharing an assignment, or being reunited in heaven when they’ve both earned their wings.
- Jonathan & Mandy: Arthur | Jonathan being a good father to Mandy. Reading to her, playing with her, singing to her, whatever you like. Just all around being a good dad.
What was going through Jonathan’s mind when the only opportunity he had to interact with his daughter in 40 years was by being as obnoxious and dislikable as he could?
What was going through Mandy’s head when she thought that her mother, who had never moved on from her father, was planning to marry a much younger drummer who would probably spend all her money? Does Mandy remember her dad at all? What sorts of stories has Jane told her about him?
-
I Dream of Jeannie:
Pairings Requested: Jeannie/Roger/Tony, Amanda Bellows & Jeannie
Tumblr tag for fandom: I Dream of Jeannie
Fandom Specific Likes: Roger and Jeannie both being bi, Tony being biromantic and demisexual. Amanda being the voice of reason. The Bellowses’ marriage being built more on steady love than passion.
Fandom Specific DNW: None.
Optional Prompts by pairing:
- Jeannie/Roger/Tony: I’ve pretty well written all of my ideas for this pairing myself, I just want content not written by me. Maybe some established relationship fluff.
Or something where Roger and Tony are together first and then Jeannie joins their relationship. Maybe Jeannie realizes that Tony and Roger have feeling for each other and decides to set them up, and then they fold her into their relationship after she succeeds.
- Amanda & Jeannie: I just really want to see more of Amanda being a mother figure to Jeannie. Amanda helping Jeannie pick out her wedding dress would be delightful.
If you wanted to write something more involved, I keep imagining something where after "Ride 'Em Astronaut," Amanda helps Jeannie take the organizers of the rodeo to court for trying to use her as a prize for the winner.
-
Magic School Bus:
Pairings Requested: Arnold & Carlos & Dorothy Ann & Keesha & Phoebe & Ralphie & Tim & Wanda, Ms. Frizzle/Mr. Seedplot
Tumblr tag for fandom: Magic School Bus
Fandom Specific Likes: Ms. Frizzle being open to dating many different people, not just Mr. Seedplot. The kids all being close friends and no matter how many arguments they have they always make up quickly. Appearances by Mikey.
Fandom Specific DNW: Romances between the kids. I don’t mind occasional references to crushes, but I don’t want shipping with them.
Optional Prompts by pairing:
- The Kids: How did they first become friends? Phoebe transferred in, but have the other seven always been classmates? Was it hard for Phoebe to fit in at first or did they all make her feel welcome? Did they used to have other classmates before Ms. Frizzle’s class? What do they like to do for fun when they’re not in school or doing science?
A favorite headcanon of mine is that after college, the eight of them chip in and buy a house to use as home base. And they all travel around researching in their respective fields, but sometimes they just stay right there and do science. I would love any sort of story set in that world.
- Ms. Frizzle/Mr. Seedplot: How did they first meet? What happens after Liz brings Ms. Frizzle the flowers and note? Do they go on a date? Do the class ship them?
-
Sesame Street:
Pairings Requested: Bob/Linda, Linda/Maria, Harriet/Mr. Hooper, Gordon/Susan, David/Luis/Maria, Bob/Susan/Gordon, Bob/David/Linda/Luis/Maria/Olivia
Tumblr Tag for Fandom: Sesame Street
Fandom Specific Likes: Mr. Hooper lives. The characters making sure to sign for Linda so that she knows what’s going on. Miles and Gabi being best friends. Bob and Maria being metamours and having a very sibling-like relationship. Mr. Hooper refusing to tell anyone what his orientation is. Big Bird basically being everyone’s child. Bob being in both of the above polyamorous relationships at the same time.
Fandom Specific DNW: Anything involving the death of Mr. Hooper. Making Linda hearing instead of Deaf.
Optional Prompts by pairing:
All of these pairings I’d be happy with anything you want to write but here are a few thoughts.
- Bob/Linda: If they had gotten married, what would their wedding look like?
What kind of dates do they go on?
According to episode summaries on The Muppet wiki, Bob writes songs for Linda and she teaches him American Sign Language. I would love to see either or both of those things.
- Linda/Maria: When Linda first arrives on Sesame Street, Maria is the person who’s the most fluent in ASL and that leads to her and Linda becoming friends quickly.
Linda learning some Spanish sign language so she and Maria can both speak Spanish.
- Harriet/Mr. Hooper: Based on reading the Muppet wiki, I got the feeling that David’s Grandma Harriet and Mr. Hooper are quietly dating and I would love to see more of that.
In season 11 Mr. Hooper and his friends Mr. Macintosh and Willy took Harriet to a dance. How did that go? Did they start dating after that?
- Gordon/Susan: I would dearly love some fic about how they met and fell in love.
Or a fic about how they decided that they were ready to be parents and that they wanted to adopt.
Maybe something with them geeking out together over science.
- David/Luis/Maria: The only logical solution to the Maria/David, Maria/Luis relationships. I actually shipped David/Luis before I shipped Maria/David, so I definitely view this as a full triad.
How do they get together? Are two of them together first and then the third joins them? Or do they become a triad all at once?
What do their dates as a triad look like? Do the three of them ever go dancing?
How do they decide to get married? To become parents? Does it matter which of Maria’s husbands is Gabi’s biological father or do they only know for medical history reasons?
- Bob/Susan/Gordon: Did they know each other before Sesame Street or did they meet there? When did they get together?
One thing I really like is the idea of them having gone to college together and getting up to hijinks. I would love to see some of that.
How involved is Bob in parenting Miles?
- Bob/David/Linda/Luis/Maria/Olivia: The ship of my heart. My personal perspective is that every part of this relationship is romantic except for Bob and Maria. Bob and Maria adore each other but their relationship with each other is platonic.
Do they ever manage to all share a bed comfortably or are there too many of them and someone ends up on the floor?
The six of them go out on date and are mistaken for being three couples so they try to see how obvious they can make it that it’s all six of them.
Is it ever hard to parent Gabi when there are six parents?
-
Star Trek: The Original Series:
Pairings Requested: Chekov/Sulu, Chekov/Sulu/Uhura, Scotty/Uhura, Chekov/Sulu/Scotty/Uhura
Tumblr Tag for Fandom: Star Trek TOS
Fandom Specific Likes: Raising a family on the Enterprise. Demora being from a surrogate mother rather than a one-night-stand. Annie Rand living. Scotty and Uhura having the kid from this art (I named him Mzuzi). Random future tech. Using the hollodeck/recreation deck for dates.
Fandom Specific DNW: Anything that involves people’s consciousness being separated from their body. Anything that could be considered possession.
Optional Prompts:
I don’t really have any specific prompts for any of these pairings. I would love to see anything with Chekov and Sulu raising Demora together. And I LOVE Uhura being showered with affection by her partners. I also really like seeing people learning each other’s first languages so they can talk to each other in them.
-
The West Wing:
Pairings Requested: Abby/Jed/Leo
Tumblr Tag for Fandom: The West Wing
Fandom Specific Likes: The three of them basically being parental figures to the senior staff. Mallory thinking of the Bartlett daughters as her sisters and vice-versa.
Fandom Specific DNW: Smoking. Health problems, canon or not.
Optional Prompts: I love fic where Leo finds excuses to spend the night in the residence (AKA Jed and Abby’s bed).
An AU like Triad Verse in which Jed is literally married to both Abby and Leo and its known by everyone.
Fic where Leo lives and the three of them just retire to the farm in New Hampshire together.
-
WordGirl:
Pairings Requested: Becky/Tobey/Scoops/Violet, Johnson/TJ
Tumblr Tag for Fandom: WordGirl
Fandom Specific Likes: Tobey realizing that he’s loved. Tobey’s robots being sweet.
Fandom Specific DNW: Angst. These are children so I’d prefer they not show affection with anything more than a handhold or maybe a kiss on the cheek, unless they’re aged up.
Optional Prompts: I’m happy with any kind of cute content for either of these pairings. I would especially like to see a get together.
I also read a fic once where Becky and TJ were allowed to invite their friends on a Botsford family trip to a cabin on a lake. Scoops and Violet couldn’t go in the fic, but I keep wondering what it would be like if they did and Becky was there with her mutual crushes and TJ was there with his.

Vampires vs. the Bronx Review: Young Bloods Clean Up the Concourse
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The Frog Brothers’ street cred echoes way uptown as Netflix offers up its after-hours, after-school Halloween special treat: Vampires vs. The Bronx. Think of it as Get Out for tweens as the real bloodsuckers in this Bronx tale are the real estate developers looking to gentrify the Concourse. They even dress like landed gentry. “The Murnau guys are chewing up the neighborhood,” street proud Miguel (Jaden Michael) warns his crew. The Murnau real estate firm doesn’t even try to hide it, they have a Vlad the Impaler face on their logo.
Miguel is known as Lil Mayor in the reluctantly transitional neighborhood. He is on a mission to save Tony’s bodega, where he basically grew up. He is the de facto leader of a gang which consists of his two best friends. Bobby (Gerald W. Jones III) just got kicked out of school for fighting, and the local priest is keeping a watchful eye on him. The son of a slain OG, a Concourse gang is also checking him out while cruising for recruits. Bobby turns down a job at the beginning of the episode. Luis (Gregory Diaz IV), or as Slim calls him “Puerto Rican Harry Potter,” is the horror geek with all the answers. Just in from Tampa, after three months of enforced Disneyfication apparently, he is the odd one out, and expresses it in an almost-Shakespearean/Neil Simon soliloquy. It’s enough to put hair on your legs.
Gloria (Imani Lewis) provides running commentary throughout via her video blog, GloTV. “Have you noticed those missing kids’ posters,” she asks over too many emojis. “Construction was supposed to be good for the neighborhood.” We get to know, and like, the kids on the block very fast. Lil Mayor, on a bike two sizes too big for him, is out saving the neighborhood and the people give him props for that. He also gets free snacks and sodas. Well, they’re on his tab, which he swears he’s going to pay back. It just feels like he will, but even if he doesn’t, he’s working it off ahead of time. The rest of the gang is super positive, on the sweet and down low.
Even the gangbangers are polite and shit. Expressing displeasure with the vintage fashions of their undead interlopers with a more muted “I didn’t say I liked them” retort than a loud slam of trash talk. Almost all the characters, even the minor ones, get in a wisecrack. But Bobby gets in the best understated punch line: “Not what I thought you’d say.” It doesn’t seem like much on the page, but after the suspense of the building, it is an absolutely killer line. Even the vampire commander’s personal familiar Frank Polidori (Shea Whigham) projects a cool understated wit. While locking the vampire hunters in the Murnau offices he notes how daylight can be murder. Frank might be a descendant of John William Polidori, who submitted the short story “The Vampyre” to an exclusive 1819 contest with poets Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, and Percy Shelley. He lost to the novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.
The first character we meet is Vivian (Sarah Gadon), a young white woman who moved after she was priced out of her old neighborhood. She’s getting her nails done for the first time in the Bronx by a manicurist who has pushed her last cuticle. She’s sold the salon and is moving to the suburbs. There is a twist to her character, and while this would normally make this particular reviewer cheer, she brings too much of what’s wrong with the changing neighborhood. She ultimately admits she’s been slumming the whole time.
The vampires are standard issued and off the rack, obviously pale and fairly innocuous, like something you’d find in the TV movie adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘Salem’s Lot. Luckily, the book makes an appearance and an impression. It’s pretty creepy how the vampires in Vampires vs. the Bronx levitate as they bite during a particularly impressive introductory scene in an underground parking garage. It is also telling how everyone knows the cops wouldn’t do anything about finding Slim. Not because he’s a gangbanger, but because he’s from the Bronx. Parts of the movie comes across like a travelogue which tells you how to get to Sesame Street. The vampires have a hierarchy, and a plan. The kids very easily lift a bag with some kind of skeleton key and a zip drive and learn the building the Murnau company is building will be 13 floors high. That’s not the unlucky part, though. Each floor will have a dozen coffins, which means 156 vampires will be crowding the 4 Train.
Luis lays out “the basics,” during a lag in Blade, which the kids watch as an instructional tool. Stakes disintegrate vampire if you get them in the heart. The eucharist turns them into toast. Add garlic and it can be sold at the bodega as vampire garlic toast. But he leaves out the first sign of the neighborhood invaders: the canvas bags. As scary as the vampires are, they suck the life out of the hood with deeds and writs and foreclosure papers. That is their weapon as much as the kids have plastic crucifixes.
The overt vampire incursion is a parable about a very real and silent threat: gentrification. In the film, it’s not just any old white people buying up property in the Boogie Down. It’s ancient old people who stay that way by sucking the blood out of locals while draining the hood of anything special. But either way, it’s “all about getting that macchiato and gelato money.” No one wants to see a Butter Store on 3rd Ave. Gentrification isn’t the only thing that sucks on the Concourse. Vampires, humans, and clergy are also at the mercy of an even more insidious and equally covert menace: Sprite product placement. It is apparently the new holy water below Tremont Ave.
The weaponing-up scene is fun. Watching the kids steal garlic and fill holy water balloons is a direct homage to Lost Boys. The movie flubs the science. If the balloon the kids use as a beacon to find vampires pops outside a major nest, wouldn’t all the holy water balloons pop once they enter? The kids prove themselves creatures as their batting average soars on a Sammy Sosa baseball bat. But their ultimate weapon is their trash talk. A particularly adherent follower of vampire commandments learns the error of his ways because one of the kids points out he’s going to be the vampires’ “bitch for all eternity.”
Besides a millisecond of a flirtatious scene at the first devilish deal signing, the film offers nothing in the way of sexual tension, an absolute must for vampire entertainment. Miguel’s crush on the older 16-year-old girl who was raised to fight vampires because she is Haitian turns out to be a disappointment which only emphasizes how much of a children’s story this is. Dominican Republic-raised director Oz Rodriguez (Saturday Night Live, A.P. Bio) wanted to showcase the multiculturalism and youth of the city’s most underdog borough.
If you’re looking for the 2011 UK film Attack the Block, you won’t find it here. Well, maybe under the sugar coating. Vampires vs. the Bronx is for all ages, though not all species, apparently. There is not a single bat in the movie, and it wasn’t shot that far from The Bronx Zoo. They have a whole World of Darkness there. Bats also assemble in the Bronx Botanical Garden, but the new citizens of the get down haven’t done their homework. In 1995, Eddie Murphy claimed everything south of Fulton Street for the vampires in the 1995 film Vampire in Brooklyn. Staten Island has its own vampire reality series with FX’s What We Do in the Shadows. Vampires vs. the Bronx is a light and fun take on an old and familiar story. It’s good for a chuckle but won’t keep you up at night unless there’s been a lot of new traffic lights and Starbucks popping up on your block.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Vampires vs. The Bronx will stream on Netflix starting Oct. 2, 2020.

#OurVoces presents Daniel José Older, author of ‘Shadowhouse Fall’
Tumblr media
¡Qué bonita bandera! AKA what heritage(s) do you claim?
Cubanooooo (and Jewish American on the other side)
When was the first time you saw yourself represented?
Sonia Manzano aka Maria from Sesame Street was the first and most important. And then not again until I was like in my twenties basically...there were some here and there of course but The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao was a landmark for Latinx nerds like me.
How do you connect to your heritage through your books (if at all)?
I write a lot about the sustaining power of ancestors—a reclamation of the ghost story, which white western culture has turned into such singularly horrible narrative, whereas so many of grew up with a much more loving and nuanced relationship to our dead. Also, I write Latinx characters in all my books. Why? Because we exist and we are amazing.
What do you hope for the future of Latinx books?
That it expresses the endlessly complex humanity that we are composed of, in all our glory, joyfulness, sorrow, messiness.
What is the book that inspired you to write for kids/teens?
The Harry Potter series inspired me, but also made me want to write a kind of counternarrative because as much as I loved it, so many of the same old white savior tropes are still present. All of Octavia Butler's books, Oscar Wao, Nalo Hopkinson, Nnedi Okorafor...
What are your working on next?
An upcoming Middle-Grade sci-fi adventure, Flood City, about two boys named Max and Ato who team up to stop the destruction of the last urban outpost on a flooded Earth. Out from Scholastic in 2018.

I need to tell you all about something important, in light of Sesame Street's first canonical Autistic character (hooray!) This was a huge deal. As a little kid, I NEVER got to see Autistic characters. You might be thinking "Well you were a kid, you wouldn't have understood anyway." But I did. I got my diagnosis when I was seven. Prior to that, I always knew I wasn't like other kids my age. Other kids didn't shriek or repeat animal sounds over and over, or scream when they heard a commercial on tv with a "scary voice." Other kids had no problems holding a pencil, or doing p.e. I did, because I am Autistic. I didn't understand the word at the time, but I was definitely aware that I "did things a little differently," as Elmo puts it in describing Julia. And believe me, knowing and talking to other Autistic people, they realized it too. I grew up never seeing characters in children's media like me. The first characters I related to didn't show up until I was a pre teen. House M.D., and Sherlock Holmes (from Arthur Conan Doyle's novels, Sherlock's interest in bees is also where I got my username!) Were the first characters I saw that I felt a kinship with. With their simultaneous "black and white" and outside-of-the-box thinking, repetitive behaviors, difficulty with social cues, and general air of "otherness," I saw for the first time characters I could easily understand. Later there was Hermione, Luna Lovegood (both from the Harry Potter series), and of course Pearl and Onion from Steven Universe. But from early childhood, representation was scarce. So you can imagine my joy, my excitement for Autistic kids, when I heard about Julia. But it gets better. My sister, who is also on the spectrum, approached me two days ago after school. She said "Audrey?" In a hesitant voice. I answered her, and she paused and said "Did you hear about the new Muppet on Sesame Street?" Like she was nervous, or embarrassed. But I said "I did. She's Autistic, and her name is Julia. It's pretty exciting, isn't it?" She agreed, softly, then went onto something else. This was a huge hit in the heart for me. It made me realize how far we've come, even since I was little. It wasn't so long ago when I didn't even dare to think the word "Autistic" in regards to characters in popular media. Because it was already a given: the answer was no. The most I had was Rain Man and Sheldon Cooper, and to a lesser extent Sherlock Holmes and House. This is huge. I didn't think I'd see the creation of a young Autistic character meant for little kids for a long time. And here we are. My sister is young enough to experience this. Countless other kids on the spectrum are going to see Julia, and be able to be a little less afraid, maybe feel a little less alone. More than that, their peers are going to see Julia, and ask questions. Maybe, they'll also grow up a little more understanding of their Autistic peers. I am just so happy to see Julia. I hope to see other producers of children's media follow Sesame Street's example in the future, but for now, I am celebrating.

– by ChiChai@Empire-
Christopher@Empire and I made a deal that we would travel to our home countries and beyond once I graduated from graduate school. A couple of years later (and with my master’s degree at hand!) that deal came to fruition.
We kicked off the month of March by visiting the Philippines (my motherland) and experienced how each province has its own charm
For this week, we’ve been literally making our way up Vietnam (his motherland.)  We began in Saigon, spent days touring cities of the country’s center, and tomorrow, we travel even more north to Hanoi.
Christopher and I are now halfway in our Asia tour. In other words, I got a lot to catch you up on!  My first stop for you is Metro Manila, the capital region of the Philippines.
Metro Manila often gets a bad rap. The usual complaints include traffic, smog, crowds, and globalization. To be honest, I may have whined about all the above a few times myself. But– through it all– Metro Manila has a special place in my heart.
Christopher enjoying our Manila view
Metro Manila, being the economic hub of the country, is the most influenced by outside nations. You can see it in its all-English advertisements, its massive malls housing brands like H&M and Topshop, and its Starbucks at every corner. However, as globalization maybe a mainstream force into the region, there is a rise from locals to push back and gain ownership of their own crafts. (This was even a finding in my thesis!)  That pride in pinoy craftsmanship and artistry is the Metro Manila I wanted Christopher to experience this trip.
Here are some of the places that I took him to get that right taste of Metro  Manila:
Ermita, Manila
Rizal Park aka Luneta National Park
Rizal Park is one of the largest urban parks of southeast Asia. You can see all ages gathering here!–from little kids playing, young adults of the coast guard running, and elders taking an outdoor ballroom class. Also, this urban park not only serves as a place of leisure, it is also a place of history and revolution.
The name of the park itself is powerful. Jose Rizal is known for using his intellect and literature to inspire the masses to rise against Spanish colonization. His statue stands tall in the park and is guarded all day. Along with revolutionary symbolism, the Declaration of Philippine Independence from the US was signed here and political rallies against the Marcos dictatorship were hosted here as well.
National Museum
The National Museum is free! It is FREE! As part of an initiative to promote Philippine art and history, the museum is free for all! The museum consists of two buildings: one focusing on Philippine art and another specializing in Philippine anthropology. As a Filipina-American who grew up with a Western education, seeing the beautiful artwork that Filipinos have made throughout the centuries helped me feel a sense of belonging and pride. I don’t doubt that this has the same affect on other Fil-Ams visiting the homeland. (Will definitely write a separate blog about this later!)
Yabu: The House of Katsu – Robinson’s Mall
Outside influences in Metro Manila is strongly shown in the food. Yes there are excessive U.S. fast-food restaurants popping up all over the landscape but Filipino-owned specialty restaurants are opening as well. Yabu is one of my favorite examples. Owned by Filipino John Concepcion, Yabu brings the classic Japanese katsu to the Philippines. You can eat  pork katsu or salmon katsu or oyster katsu or more with their specialty in-house made katsu sauce and the sesame that you grind yourself.  Read more here.
Bay City, Pasay
SM By the Bay Amusement Park
Mall of Asia isn’t exactly my favorite place to be… uh… It is one of the largest malls in the world– architecturally speaking, awesome! But personally, this mall is so big and so full of tourists that I get dizzy in it.
What I do like about “MoA” is that it has an adjacent amusement park along the Manila Bay. It is the one place that you can drink a mango smoothie while riding the tallest ferris wheel in the Philippines. I’ll take the ferris wheel’s sunset view over any mall.
Poblacion, Makati
You can parallel Makati to San Francisco’s Financial District. Skyscrapers and big-time businesses can be found in this Metro Manila city. For millennials, Makati is home to modern and locally-owned bars and “Instagrammable” foodie spots, particularly in the district Poblacion. Or, “Pobs” (my cousin’s friend is trying really hard to make Pobs a thing lol.)
Tambai
by Zomato.com
At a quick glance, Tambai may seem like another sari-sari store along the sidewalk. Come closer and you’ll see that it is more. Still keeping the classic street-food feel, this cozy restaurant sets up small tables and stools for you to enjoy their oh-so-good yakitori. They even serve local beers, Japanese beers, and US beers to pair with your food. And if you want to stuff your belly with more than yakitori, they have other tapas such as kimchi fried rice and soft shell crab.
Wild Poppy
What’s great about a night out at Pobs is that the bars and foodie spots are walking distance from one another. After meeting up with my cousin Niqui and her friends for a late-night Tambai dinner, we headed to our next stop to get more drinks: Wild Poppy.
Wild Poppy is in a cluster of other well-decorated bars/restaurants. The reason why we chose Wild Poppy is for its chiller vibe and its balcony’s fresh-ambiance. Here we were able to enjoy juicy cocktails (my “Thai-Me-Up” tasted so healthy!) while listening to their jazzy music selection.
For more food and drink suggestions, check out this CNN Philippines Poblacion, Makati food guide here
Caloocan / Home!
For a Philippines blog post with things to eat, you’ll see that I didn’t add any Filipino restaurants. I know, I know. What’s wrong with me? Well! I strongly believe that the best pinoy food one can get is home-cooked. For me, that means the best Filipino food in Metro Manila is from my family’s home in Caloocan, all served up by my Tito Nonoy.
My family and friends made sure we ordered sisig at any place that offered it because sisig is Christopher’s favorite. However, his favorite sisig out of all of the sisig he tried was from Tito Nonoy. Like I said, nothing beats a home-cooked meal.
I love our hundred-year-old house. Supposedly our house is one of the oldest in the neighborhood. You can still tell that it was originally a nipa hut. Up until I was in high school, the roof still had some of its original palm leaves embedded into it. But, because of its traditional Filipino appeal, my family forced Chris and I to take impromptu harana-like photos in the balcony *roll eyes*
Recommendations not featured:
Although we didn’t get to visit all of my favorite Metro Manila spots, I still want to provide more in this guide for you! Here are some:
Quezon City
Eat/ Drink:
The Nook, a Harry Potter themed-cafe in which you can cool down from the tropical heat with a Butterbeer and Cauldron Cake
Pino, classic Pinoy dishes with vegetarian and vegan options. When I went here, my friends and I had both the vegetarian and meat sisig to compare the two. I would order both again.
Mang Larry’s Isawan stand at UP Diliman. My friends who attended UPD say that Mang Larry’s is the place to get isaw (gizzard.) As unappetizing as that sounds (and looks) you have to try it for its authentic cooking of a street-food classic.
Shop:
Common Room, an arts&crafts and local-made shop. A lot of my favorite local artists’ and brands’ products can be found here. You can get a hand-lettering kit curated by the artist Abbey Sy,  a children’s book illustrated by the watercolorist and tattooist Wiji (who happened to do majority of my tattoos!), and buy Vela Manila accessories which intertwine traditionally woven fabrics with leather goods.
To Do/ See:
La Mesa Nature Reserve, a nature reserve that’s great for a nature stroll or bike ride. Upon seeing its lushness, you’ll have a hard time believing that this rainforest patch exists in Metro Manila. You can  also sign up your group of homies to plant more trees here. You can check out my tree-planting experience here.
Intramuros, Manila
To Do/ See:
Walk this Way Tour by Carlos Celdran, a theatrical and historical tour in Manila’s oldest district: Intramuros. This is probably the most honest tour you can get in regards to Philippines’ colonial history and how that history affects Philippines’ aspirations today.
Bambike Eco Tour, rent a bike and either join a tour group or tour on your own in Intramuros
To Eat:
Barbara’s, Spanish-Filipino dishes with traditional entertainment. The last time I went there, a few elders were dressed in barongs and serenaded each table. Also, it is conveniently next door to San Agustin Church– another historical must-see
Escolta, Manila
To Do/ See:
The Hub Make Lab. Imagine a flea market set-up but with booths of arts, crafts, and apparel. The Hub is the bottom floor of Escolta’s First United Building which is home to several artist studios. You can shop and also drink at either the cafe or bar. They also host night markets on Saturdays in which the artists studios have open houses and live musicians perform throughout the evening. Learn more here.
I hope you find this list helpful for your own Metro Manila adventure! If you do find yourself in Metro Manila, do not be discouraged from its excessive amount of malls and traffic. Despite the influx of  McDonald’s and Forever21’s and smog, a new generation is rising to take Manila back through its crafts. You just need to seek it.
