#like yeah its cool but no catra so not as cool as it could be...

okay. so voltron’s second season (”seasons” 3-6) were. well.
i have to say that i sort of vastly preferred the first production block. i definitely think the show was more in its element with the episodic “defeat zarcon” stuff than with... to be honest, i have no idea what’s happening.
i mean it started off pretty good. could have gone in a lot of directions. i was interested in the idea of lotor, whose ideology seemed to be a very good contrast to zarcon’s but still seemed to be a good villain. a darker side to the alteans, the fact that the lions can bond to multiple paladins, etc etc etc.
like idk, i know there are people that would take issue with it but it would have been kinda cool if various characters could bond to the different lions sometimes, and the relationship with each one could reveal something about the character. like maybe it would have been a contrast to zarcon, who was hyperfixated on the black lion and thought that because it was the leader, it was the Important One or whatever.
anyways this is called “inflammatoryfandomblog” and it’s time for the griping.
-> the plot is about quintessence, which... the galra empire depends on for some reason, even though it was really the druids we’ve seen use it before, and they were destroying whole planets for the stuff and using it to power zarcon’s little ego “i’m going to get the lions trip.” it’s kind of unclear what else uses it. and i think that’s like my main issue with this season/production block? aside from the S1-like episodes, it feels very muddled and hard to really get into.
i just. am trying to make sense of lotor’s plan. or haggar’s plan. or what they each wanted. or what even what quintessence does. quintessence seems to be like, a... theme-thing... for being too entrenched in the past and what you’ve lost, and so being poisoned by it is losing sight of the present by trying to recreate it. at least that’s what makes the most sense. it’s not, uh, subtle--but it’s not used well enough to relieve it of the Magical Bullshit feeling.
(this is something she-ra has over voltron; whatever plot magic BS happens is generally woven in better, thematically, with adora and glimmer and catra--but this just might be because there’s a lot less characters and she-ra very early on drops the pretense of being political in any way; it’s the type of series that’s very transparent with that--it says “yeah lmao our world doesn’t matter this is basically a basic family story with princess/scifantasy icing”, while voltron is very different in this regard, and so this approach does it no favors, because how it developed its world was a very good selling point for me in the first production block)
like “oh we just offer them more quintessence and they’ll listen to me” seems like a really bad justification for......... anything......... and idk if they even needed that plotline, i feel like lotor wanting to create an “inclusive/fair empire” is a pretty interesting oxymoron without the weird altean magic stuff. that haggar also unlocked. somehow. i wasn’t very invested in it i suppose; it failed to sort of convince me at any point of being true to the setting, which was a real strength of the first season.
-> i remember being miffed at the lack of shiro/lotor interactions (i mean, the lack of interactions sort of gave it away that this shiro was not worth investing into, especially since it was so telegraphed that druidlady was controlling him, but i was annoyed at the time) because i dunno, real!shiro and lotor could have built up an understanding re: being forced by zarcon to do bad stuff. generally the shiro clone plot is very meh, i feel it would have been better if a) the “real” shiro was actually taken to be some sort of trojan or he’s dead and the clone has to reckon with what it means and be an actual character or b) shiro’s spirit guided them and he was a mentor figure the entire way through, only getting back into a body at some point or another.
generally the entire clone plotline was just kind of worse than most possible alternatives to it, including having both shiros be alive and kicking. as it is now shiro is basically the same as the one from the first production block and can’t have changed.
-> for a second, since most of my predictions panned out in some way, that shiro *was* actually going to be zarcon all along. that would have been wild. similarly a very funny alternate universe is one where the gang splits the comet, gives half of it to the evil alteans and half of it to the galra and simply lets them fight.
-> i liked that the characters went off and had lives/missions outside of voltron (or at least, pidge/keith) and had a few episodes dedicated to those. those, aside from the early “season 3″ episodes and the fun one-shot ones were very enjoyable breaks from the mostly incoherent main plot. i had fun watching them instead of being like “hmm. so this is a Thing now” in the Main Story
i really feel that ultra-dramatic storytelling is not these writers’ strong suit. which, fair, i mean, i’m not a writer, but i don’t think it’s a stretch to say that they’re a lot better with episodes with some implications as opposed to long, serialized, dramatic structures as a group. i think it might just be a matter of experience; most cartoons until the 2010s were very episodic, and longer stories just have more production/meddling complications which are non-trivial, whereas with episodes, if something doesn’t work... you can just dump it. but episode-episodes also don’t play well with streaming. just kind of an unfortunate media-landscape conundrum there.
(note that japanese animation for example, while it’s very serialized, most of the time has the benefit of having source material already laid out for it. really the equivalent of something like that are like, comic book shows i guess.)
-> animation is really stellar and action is very good. studio mir is great. they always stick the landing.
-> i guess i like that they tried to do something with the idea of “the evil emperor is dead/gone, now what?” which is kind of a difficult plot to write honestly, especially when the main cast are transformer-power-rangers, it’s not obvious how to make them relevant enough to have the focus on them. (and in classic fashion, i don’t really like making suggestions.)
-> lance is going to get with allura nooooooo. i was really invested in the idea that he defects because of a hot girl. instead he just gets jealous of lotor. the sad thing is i really think they could have been at least good friends (lance/allura). the scene where allura replicates trying to flirt with the blue lion is really funny, and lance bringing out everyone’s goofballness would have been a good variant on his general archetype. instead lance is mostly Annoying and gets a few disconnected Scenes. i can’t even really think of a good lance episode this season.
-> pidge baby though. she’s obviously flawed (esp with the prisoner exchange stuff like wth lady) and like. the main plot is dead to me at this point. but i really liked her side episodes. same with keith etc etc.
-> predictions for next season (if i get around to watching it):
-> 1. sendak (zendak?) invades earth. “YOU EARTHLINGS DEFEATED ME LIKE A CHUMP... LOOK WHO’S THE CHUMP NOW???” -> 2. allura and coran start a cow extermination policy -> 3. everyone gets sent to a mental institution and they have to break out -> 4. haggar does some quintessence bullshit and tries to revive lotor or whatever. zombie lotor is horribly mangled and rips a hole through reality again! -> 5. shiro binge-watches all the series he’s missed in the time he’s been dead. he likes kdramas or wuxia. not anime though. -> 6. ?????? lance becomes embroiled in cuban politics. just randomly. (he’s the one who likes anime.)

Ariana: neither today you will be competing in an all-out, every team for themselves, paintball war!
Lance: Oh yeah! now we're talking!
Adora: how do win?
Ariana: easy, you must beat the other teams by covering their body in paint, the head, the chest, the arms, and the legs.
Alexander: do the paintballs hurt?
Ariana: Oh they hurt, like a lot, that's why I'm giving you transparent armor, a shield, and some glasses, so I can still see the paint on your body while having you being protected from paintballs, oh, don't worry about getting shot in the start, the guns, are on the other side of the beach
Marceline: Sweet!
Catra: Um, Ariana, what do we get if we win?
Ariana: If you win, you and your partner will get a romantic dinner service
Benson: Sweet!
Ariana: Ok suit up, and be on the beach
[[The Contestants put on their clear transparent armor and then grabbed their shields and finally get set up at the start]]
Ariana: OK Contestants, are you ready to make history!!!
Contestants: Yes we are!!!!
Ariana: Ok, on my signal, Reagan will fire this flare gun, and then, It's Pride Time!!! ready Reagan?
Reagan: You bet Eversley!
Ariana: Ok Contestants... On Your Marks... Get Set... Go!!!
[[All the contestants started running farther down the beach as they each picked their paint guns]]
Ariana: And the contestants are off and the key here guys, is to get the paint in the gun quickly so you can strategize with your partner
Steve: I hear you Ariana, but remember, some of these guys aren't experienced enough when it comes to combat, so defense is their number one priority!
[[The Contestants head back to the start and load the paintballs into their guns]]]
Twink: And the balls are in the guns!!!
Ariana: Now let’s see how interesting things get!
Terry: Dang it!!! Where's the trigger
Greg: Oh c’mon!!!, It should be on the side
Terry: I'm looking for it!!!
[[All of sudden, Greg and Terry are covered from head to toe in paint, courtesy of Catra and Adora]]
Catra: Sorry Boys, Got to be prepared
Ariana: And Just Like That, Terry and Greg are eliminated, but they have a chance to stay alive in the games, that if they can beat the 19th place team later on!
[Meanwhile, Luz and Amity are in the middle of the action, using their shields to block Paint from every direction]]
Amity: Uh, Luz, what's the plan here?
Luz: Don't know, I've held a wand and broom before, but not a flipping gun!!!
Amity: Well, maybe we can run along the sand and I use the shield while you use the guns, and together, we might be able to...
[[Before Amity can finish her sentence, she and Luz hear the screams of Harley and Ivy, behind them, and from there, Harley and Ivy go completely ham on both Luz and Amity, sending them crashing into the beach, Covering them in Sand and Paint]]
Ariana: Holy cow, and just like that, in shocking fashion, the favorites, Luz and Amity, are out of the paintball war!
Poison Ivy: That's karma for embarrassing us at the Red Carpet Special!!!
Harley Quinn: Next time, maybe think twice before doing that again!!
[[Luz and Amity get up and head out of the battle square]]
Luz: Geez, what did we do to those two?
Amity: I don't know, but we got to focus on beating Terry and Greg, otherwise, we're done with the game show, and we can't have that!
Luz: Don't worry, we got this
[[Back in the Battle Square, Mathew and Jay are cowardly in fear, using their shields and hands to block themselves from paintballs]]
Jay: Matt, I'm scared right now
Matthew: Alright look, if we look around, we won't get eliminated!
Jay: Alright, Hey look to the side of you, those too old dudes, Odval and Sorcerio, they totally lost, let's blast them!!!
Matthew: let's!!!
[[Matthew and Jay take charge as they blast their guns in the direction of Odval and Sorcerio, eliminating them]]
Ariana:**** And Orval and Sorcerio are out!
Odval: dang it!
Matthew: Yes, that was awesome Jay!!
Jay: you know it was!!
[[Matthew and were about lock lips, but then get eliminated by Troy and Benson]]
Troy: Yes, Score!!!'
Ariana: And Troy and Benson eliminate Jay and Matthew
Matthew: No!!!!!
Benson: Nice Shot babe:
Troy: Thank you, you weren't bad yourself babe
Benson: Troy, Behind you!!!
[[Raj and Shawn try to launch a sneak attack on Troy and Benson, but Benson uses his shield while Troy spins out from behind and eliminates Raj and Shawn]]
Steve: And that's back-to-back elimination for Benson and Troy, 5 teams down, 15 remaining!
Stat: let's go and hurry it up, I got stuff to do!
Reagan: I would like to do stuff with you!
[[The Whole Crew looks at Reagan with a Confused look on their faces]]
Stat: Um... What Was That?
Reagan: I said I can't wait to get some food
Stat: No, That's not what you said
Ariana: Guys, We'll talk about it later, Look, Anne and Maggie!
[[Anne and Maggie are defending themselves with the shields, and try to hit the contestants, first, they attempted to hit Luna and Sam, but miss, then they tried to hit Terry and Alexander, but miss again, and finally, they try to hit Marceline and Bubblegum but miss for the third straight time]]
Maggie: Boonchuy, what the heck, I thought you were good with combat!
Anne: I am, with a tennis Racket or sword, not a gun!
Maggie: Well figure it out!!!
Anne: I am figuring it out, you don't need to get all angry at me for....
[[Before Anne could finish, Harley and Ivy hit paintballs at the back of Anne, causing her to hit the sand on her face]]
Harley: Take that Swamp Girl!!!
[[Anne all of a sudden gets up and flashes her eyes blue, she grows a very pissed off look on her face]]
Maggie: Boonchuy, you ok? what's going on with you?
[Anne goes on a complete paintball spree, shooting paintballs at Harley and Ivy, Reeve and Adam, Jackie and Chloe, and Ryan and Mingi and eliminating them all within seconds
Ariana: Well, damn, Um.... Don't know where that came from, but we are now down to 11 teams left:
[[Anne's power eyes quickly fade, and she passes out on the floor with her back on the sand, Catra and Adora quickly take advantage and eliminate Anne and Maggie]]
Ariana: Alright Ten Teams, let's see what happens down the stretch!
[[Luna and Sam  decide to use their musical talent to good use, as they unleash a spinning tip toe shot that shot paintballs 360 around the battle square, and they hit Charlie and Vaggie, putting them in 10th]]
Charlie: Good shot Luna!
Luna: Thanks Demon Dudette!
Sam: Luna, Keith, and Lance at 12 O'Clock!!!
[[Luna, Rolls to the left and grabs Sam's hand and Pulls her out of the way, and fires paintballs at Lance and Keith]]
Ariana: And Just look at that, Luna and Sam are surprising everyone, eliminating two-tier teams back to back!
Luna: Sam: We're nailing this!!!
Sam: I Know, It's better than the last time we played laser tag!!
Luna: C’mon, we got to stay focused!
[[While Running on the Course, Bubblegum and Marceline run into Catra and Adora, they quickly draw their paint guns on each other]]
Adora: Woah there you two, Backup!!!
Marceline: Why don't you back up!!
Catra: No!!! You back up!! do it now or we will shoot our paintballs, right here, right now!!!
Blubs: Ladies, Stand down, You don't need to get threatening on each other!
Catra: What? Can you believe the nerve of this guy!
Marceline: You thinking what I'm thinking?\
Catra: Blast them!!!
[[Catra and Marceline fire their paint guns at Sheriff Blubs and deputy Durland, eliminating the cops from the paintball war]]
Bubblegum: Really?
Catra: Nice teamwork Spooky!
Marceline: Well, thank you!
Catra: Your Welcome, Now hold still while I eliminate you!
Marceline: What?
[[Catra quickly fires Paintballs at Marceline and Bubblegum]]
Ariana: And Bubblegum and Marceline are out, 6 teams left!
Adora: Catra! What are you doing we could have used them as an ally!
Catra: Yeah, but you know me, can't any chances with anyone!
[[Terry and Alexander try to keep shooting the other 5 teams, but keep missing, they hide behind their shields and try to come up with a plan]]
Alexander: Terry, what do we do?
Terry: ...
Alexander: Terry, you know I love you, But I'm going to need you to talk, give me something! A hand gesture, anything!!!
[[Alexander waited for a response, but it was too late, as Troy and Benson shot the shield out of their hands and eliminated Alexander and Terry]]
Ariana: Alexander and Terry are out, we are down to our 5 final teams, Luna and Sam, Catra and Adora, Korra and Asami, Troy and Benson, and Enid and Red Action!
Enid: Alright Red, We're in the final 5, don't get distracted and we got this!!!
Red Action: Got It Enid!
Enid: Troy and Benson coming in from the right!
Red Action: I'm on it!!
[[Red Action takes enid paintball and uses two paintball guns at the same, she blasted Troy and Benson with Paint, Eliminating them]]
Enid: Woah, Nice shooting there Red!
Red Action: Thanks Enid!
[[Korra and Asami try to seize the opportunity to get into the top 3, but Enid and Red duck away at the last second, they quickly get up and fire paintballs at Korra and Asami]]
Ariana: Alright, we're down to our top three, Luna and Sam, Enid and Red Action, And Adora and Catra!!
Kelsey: Ah this is gonna be good!!! Two groups of shooters and some underdogs!!!
Enid: Hope you four are ready Because we're not going down that easily!
Red Action: You might wanna quit now, but we're winning this event, Right now!!!
Catra: Oh yeah? We'll just see about that!
Luna: Bring on the Competitive fire Dudes, That just fuels our chances of winning
Adora: You know what, enough talk, let's go!!!
[[The three teams start to run around and shoot each other with their paint guns! they each dodge with their shields and their adrenaline]]
Sam: Luna, how do we do this?
Luna: just follow my lead!
[[Luna and Sam try to land multiple shots at Catra, Adora, Enid, and Red, but their too smart and well prepared, Enid and Red fire their paintballs and eliminate Luna and Sam]]
Ariana: And there we go, after a shocking effort, Luna and Sam are eliminated from the paintball battle, Enid, Red, Catra, Adora, Come with me!
Red Action: Luna, Sam, come over here for a second!
Enid: Girls look at me, you have no right to be disappointed with your finish, you worked hard and got to the final three, heck of a job!
Luna: Thank you!
Sam: Good luck!
[[Luna and Sam walk out of the battle square, but get a standing ovation from the other competitors]]
Ariana: Alright, It's time for the most important battle of all, The Winner Draw battle and the loser draw battle, Here is how it's going to work  I'm placing these targets on your chest, if you turn around and the paintball hit one of the teammate's targets, your team loses, Now, let's start with the losers, Luz, Amity, Terry, and Greg, You first!
[[The Q force places small wooden targets on the chest of Luz, Amity, Greg, and Terry]]
Ariana: Alright in Position, paint guns ready
Luz: You Ready Amity?
Amity: Ready as I'll ever be
Terry: Greg, if you screw this up, we're done!!
Greg: Good, I hope we lost then!
[[Luz, Amity, Greg, and Terry stand in front of each, looking the other way, with their paint guns in hand]]
Ariana: On your marks..... Get set..... Fire!!!
[[the two teams turn around and quickly fire their paint guns at each other]]
Ariana: Alright, Let's see what happened
[[Ariana goes up to the two teams and examines their targets, she looks at Luz and  Amity, and sees nothing on their body]]
Ariana: Luz and Amity, you're good!
Luz: Phew, that's a relief!
Ariana: Alright Terry and Greg, your turn!!
[[Terry and Greg remove their hands, and Ariana looks shocked]]
Ariana: They're hit, Ladies and Gentleman, your winners of the loser round, and the team that is staying in the Hollywood Starship Games, Luz and Amity!!
Harley: What! are you kidding me!!!
Amity: You better watch your back Harley and Ivy, Because we're coming for you!
Poison Ivy: bring it on then, because we'll be here for days!
Ariana: Greg and Terry, I hate to tell you this, but your journey on the Hollywood Starship Games is over!
Terry: I know, just send us home already!
Ariana: Oh no, I'm not sending you home yet, wait with me tomorrow, I got a special job for you tomorrow
Greg: Um... Ok?
Ariana: Alright, Catra, Adora, Red Action, Enid, It's time!!!
[[Enid and Red Action go up to Catra and Adora and Shake their hands]]
Enid: Good luck to you both
Catra: You too, Game on!!
[[They wait in line, turned around, with their paint guns ready, waiting for Ariana's Signal]]
Ariana: Alright! The last two teams, on your marks.... get set..... Fire!
[[The Two Female Teams Fire their paint guns as the other 18 teams look to see who won]]
Ariana: Alright, let's see who won! Q Force, Tabletop Drumroll, please!
Steve: You got it!
[[Ariana looks at Catra and Adora's target, and she finds paint, but not on the target, but on their stomachs]]
Ariana: They missed!, Enid and Red, show your targets!
[[Enid and Red look at their targets and they quickly take them off and show them to Ariana]]
Ariana: And... They got paint on them, Catra and Ador win the first event!!!
Catra: Yes!!!!!
Adora: We did it! We won!!
Ariana: Congrats to you girls, and the rest of you, you did amazing also, now get back on the ship and head for the showers, before the paint dries!
Contestants: Yes Ariana!
Catra: Hey Adora, I believe we have a dinner date tonight, don't we?
Adora: Why yes we do!, Now Come on, My Pretty Kitty!
Catra: Oh shut up you!!!
[[While everyone starts heading back to the ship, Anne wakes up from being unconscious from her rage episode a few hours ago]]
Maggie: Boonchuy, You're up!
Anne: Ow, My Head, what happened?
Maggie: We lost the first event, now let’s go inside the ship and take you to the medical center!
[[In a castle in another world, a newt like creature is in a room, sitting on a throne]]
King Andrius: You know your mission, my little soldier, Fine Anne Boonchuy, and bring her to me, so I can rule this kingdom, the right way!!!

The Owl House, Season 2, Episode 20, "Clouds on the Horizon," First Impressions!
In this season’s penultimate episode, I have two things to lead off with.
First of all, “Crikey!”
Second of all, kinda pissed off right now.
Well, with that click-bait lead-in out of the way (I’ll explain later), in our second to last “normal” episode (thank you, that one unnamed Disney exec. Thank you so much for gutting one of your best shows. Really appreciate it, bud!), here we have something that serves more to accelerate things toward our big climax rather than to sit alone as its own story, but there is still a lot to dissect and talk about.
So let’s start with the main focus here today: the Blights.
Odalia
Ah, the snobby narcissistic parent, a tried and true character type. I mean, every show directed toward kids needs a hate-sink, right? And as awful as he is, Big Bads like Belos are often too cool and too unrealistic to properly hate. So we add in a side-villain that is more just infuriating.
Odalia is that. I always pegged her as a Mr. Northwest type, and this only hammers it home, from her valuing the family name over the actual members of her family to her abusive control over her children (that necklace has a lot of parallels to that bell Mr. Northwest used to control Pacifica, just sayin’) to her treating her marriage to Alador like a business deal rather than a relationship. Like, what is going on? They were childhood friends! Surely there had to have been an actual relationship at some point. But here we have Odalia straight up threatening to change their “deal” and firing Alador instead of divorcing him!
And oh yeah, she knew the truth about the Day of Unity. She was fully prepared to aid in genocide in exchange for her family. No, wait, it wasn’t to spare her family, it was to give them power and station in Belos’s promised new world. It was completely out of greed.
Well, you know what they say!
That having been said, if I do have one criticism for this episode, I would have appreciate just a short moment of pain and regret from her family after she split on them instead of them seemingly not caring. I know she’s a terrible person that they’re better off without, but she was still their wife and mother, and those sorts of feelings are complicated. Like, I criticized the She-Ra finale a bit for how Shadow Weaver’s exit was handled, and I stand by a lot of what I said, but I did like how upset and confused Adora and Catra were because of it. It’s just an extra layer of emotional realism that could have made the moment feel more impactful.
Anyway…
Alador
There’s been a lot of talk about Alador and how he fits in as a Bad Parent. His initial introduction as being someone who is clearly fed up with Odalia’s bullshit and would rather be pursuing his interests endeared him to a lot of people, but that doesn’t change the fact that he was neglectful and dismissive to his kids’ needs, and he was complicit in Odalia’s abuse. Yes, the reveal that she was threatening them to keep him in line adds a new layer, but that doesn’t automatically give him a pass.
But while he has screwed up, he at least is now trying, and he definitely isn’t as bad as Odalia. Finally realizing how much he has failed (in part thanks to a cute little pep talk with King), Alador is now doing the right thing, even if it costs him everything. And, hey, might be quite a bit overdue, but I’m getting the feeling that he was Odalia’s first abuse victim, so him standing up to her for his children’s sake is a huge step toward his personal redemption. And also toward everyone not dying.
So hey, good on you, buddy!
Now you gotta just deal with the fact that you’re now on the side same as Darius. Oh please, let them interact! I want to see this pettiness play out!
Amity
Our little Mittens is all grown up!
For years she’s had to mold herself to meet her parents’ expectations. For years she’s put her own wants, own needs, and even own identity aside just to be Odalia’s perfect little daughter. For years she’s allowed herself to continue the toxic cycle, becoming an arrogant bully to squelch her insecurities, and never allowing herself to just be the good person she wanted to be.
Luz changed all of that. Luz showed her compassion, acceptance, and love. Luz held her accountable for her mistakes, but also didn’t reject her for them. Luz showed her that she was someone worth loving, and that she could be a better person.
We’ve seen her steadily work on that, seen her turn away from her toxic behaviors and relationships, seen her work to make amends for her poor treatment of others, seen her confront her own insecurities, and come out the better for it. Her relationship with Luz has lifted her up and helped them both, well, help each other change for the better.
And now she finally confronts the source of all that toxicity, the source of all those insecurities, the source of all of that unhappiness.
Her own mother, Odalia.
In a way it was a coming out moment for her. Perhaps not in the traditional sense, as not even Odalia fucks with homophobia, but for her to finally stand up for herself and say no more. And in doing so, she finally got the full support of her father, whom she takes after the most.
Again, I would’ve liked to have seen more inner turmoil. I know they were in a rather harrowing situation and didn’t have time to really process things, but I do hope that Amity, Alador, and even the twins are given the space to process being betrayed by Odalia.
Eda
I’ve wanted to give Eda a hug many times these last few episodes.
Eda’s only weakness has ever been those that she loves. Nothing else has ever gotten her down. Even with her own impending petrification, her only thought was taking care of her kids. And now she is willing to make yet another massive sacrifice: her own ability to use wild magic.
Or will she?
I mean, she obviously believes that to be the case. But I’m willing to bet that she gets an out, whether it be because defeating Belos renders the sigils powerless, or maybe she’ll just detach that arm completely, breaking the sigil’s hold over her. I mean, her detachable body parts have kind of been forgotten lately only to suddenly come back. I wonder if that is the case…
King
Poor dude. My guy just learned that he’s basically a god, and people are still treating him like a little guy, even the other kids. I mean, they’re not wrong, but it can’t be great for his self-esteem.
However, he still has his own part to play. I’m better that he’s going to start talking to the Collector through that bond they now have, maybe even convince him to turn away from Belos. The Collector seems to be pure chaotic neutral rather than actively malicious. I mean, he gets a kick out of evil, don’t get me wrong, and he certainly has no reservations about participating in what amounts to mass genocide for funsies (and as a way to escape whatever prison he’s in), but he strikes me as being more amoral rather than “evil,” if you get my meaning.
So what I’m saying is that he strikes me as someone who can be convinced to make a turn. Let’s see if our little Titan is the one to do it.
Luz
An egg.
Well, I didn’t see that coming. It’s a nice sentiment, though we still have to wait to see what it ultimately ends up being. Bat, cat, otter, or snake are still the popular choices.
Also, while I did catch “Luz” suddenly using Hunter’s flash step and wondered where she had learned that from, and while I was confused about Hunter blowing a raspberry at Kikimora, I somehow didn’t put it together that they had switched places until it got revealed. I wonder why they specifically made that switch, though. Or rather, I wonder why Luz wanted it to happen. She wanted to be captured and taken to Belos. But what can she do? What’s her game?
A couple of minor notes before we move on to the main event. Firstly, you know those rather strikingly designed wild witches that got captured for a couple frames?
Tumblr media
Yeah, those guys. I’ve heard it speculated that this might be a cameo of the creative crew, but as it turns out, they’re actually K-Pop artists that one particular storyboard artist is a fan of and wanted to include, which is really sweet and dorky. So hey, K-Pop is canon to the Boiling Isles!
They're everywhere...
Second, Kikimora mentioned Belos having eyes everywhere. People have taken this to mean that there’s a traitor in the CATS’ ranks, which very well could be, but may I offer up an alternative theory?
Tumblr media
Maybe when one of your enemies controls plants, don’t take one of her plants as a trophy? Just sayin’.
Well, okay, now that we’ve gotten all of that out of the way, let’s talk about the real reason people are talking about this episode.
Tumblr media
Guys, gals, and nonbinary pals. We got ‘em.
Yeah. This was quite lovely.
So why am I pissed off about it?
Well, the reason is quite simple. See, I planned to watch this episode during my dinner break on Saturday evening, and made sure to unfollow the Owl House subreddit to avoid spoilers. And yet someone still saw fit to post the screenshot with no spoiler tag to a completely unrelated subreddit that I also follow, and someone else uploaded the clip to youtube almost immediately, and since I watch a lot of Owl House videos the almighty algorithm saw fit to throw it up on my feed! So I got spoiled twice.
Damn it! Like, when I got spoiled for the Catradora kiss, at least I couldn’t be mad because the season got dumped all at once so when I finally got around to it the episode had been around for several days! But the same day? Guys, please, don’t do that!
Well, whatever. The kiss itself was still wonderful, and you can tell that they put most of the animation budget into this moment (as they should have). I needn’t tell you what a huge moment this is for kids’ television, to have this plainly depicted and be seen. I’ve watched adult lesbian women start crying because of this moment, because they didn’t have something like this growing up, but kids who are like them will. They’ll be able to see themselves on screen, to realize that what they feel is okay and normal, and that they don’t have to hide from themselves.
There’s been a lot of speculation of whether or not Lumity is the reason that the show got gutted, like what happened to Steven Universe. If so, then there still is clearly a lot of work to do. But Korra finally cracked the door open and many shows since have been steadily pushing it wider and wider. Things are getting better. Voices are being heard. And while there continues to be resistance, the momentum is against them, and I for one am so eager to see what new shows come walking in through that door.

On Entrapta and her malleable morality...  So, out of the blue tonight in my email inbox, I get a reply to a comment I made on a fic literally years ago? 2 or 3 years ago? Reading the comment and going back over the fic (I didn’t need to read it again, just seeing some of the replies) I was “Oh, that fic.” The author took their name off of it apparently - I think I remember who did it, but they put their fic on anon at some point.  In any case, it was a hardcore horror She-Ra fic.   You know, the kind of thing that I like to read sometimes, in any fandom I’m in. Dark, sick, twisted.  Stuff like I write sometimes.  Although, in this case, I left feeling it was fairly out of character, and yet second-guessing myself on my feelings of it being out of character, because dammit, Entrapta is confusing.  The plot of the story was that Entrapta asks Adora for a favor - without Adora knowing that the favor was going to involve her getting strapped down to a table and full-out vivisected while transforming into She-Ra so that Entrapta could study the physiology of the transformation.  It was very holeeee snhickies!  Anyway, apparently, years ago, I said “Every fandom needs a Cupcakes, this is this fandom’s Cupcakes,” and... then had to explain to someone what“Cupcakes” was.  (My Little Pony hardcore gore fanfic - I read that one without even being in the fandom having heard of its infamy).  I just got a reply in my inbox about how “But unlike Cupcakes with Pinkie Pie, this is in character for Entrapta.”   .... Cue me having flashbacks to dumb fandom-arguments I’ve had with people regarding characterization of Entrapta, other darkness fans, for whom I’m apparently not dark enough to be the cool kid because I always found the really hardcore “just wants to vivisect everyone” characterization of Entrapta off-putting and not quite right. Personally.  I’m never going to tell anyone what to write.  And, as noted, I can even enjoy such fanfics when I’m in a hardcore horror mood.  (Although I prefer that kind of hardcore horror with Horde Prime these days).   I mean, it’s just my opinion, but I don’t see Entrapta that way?  Maybe if she had stuck to the show-pitch version of her rather than the version she became for the actual show... yeah, I’ve read the show-bible pitch and saw how much was changed for all of the characters.  The Entrapta that we see in the final canon? Not so much, although with perhaps some nods to the original ideas.  It seems to me that some people in the fandom go hardcore World War II-style atrocity-experiments with her based solely on a throwaway line in her introductory episode which was (probably) a joke.  Yes, she mentioned “taking her (Adora) apart to be sure,” but I was always under the impression that she either thought that She-Ra was at least partially technology / possibly an android (that would presumably feel no pain) or it was a joke.   Then again... Entrapta is... weird. And she does do some blatantly awful things, like cackling when screwing up the weather with the Black Garnet experiment, wanting just to sit back and scientifically observe in White Out when She-Ra was rage-infected, doesn’t give a crap that her fun new lab partner wants to bring a brutal alien army to subjugate her planet (and, yeah, she was with the Horde then, but unlike the Horde soldiers, Catra and Scorpia, didn’t seem to believe in the Horde as a cause, nor as a personal ambition), she just sort of thought it was the price of breaking physics and seeing the stars?   Yet, here you know, She-Ra is not hardcore or adult enough a show to have the cute, perky mad scientist actually cutting into people alive and screaming.  It just feels off to me, even for fanfic.  Maybe it’s my own medical phobias talking.  But then, I think of how we see the good of Entrapta, how when she connects to people (and robots) she’s empathetic and prone to see the humanity in beings that others dismiss.  (Hordak, Wrong Hordak, Emily).  It just seems to me like when up close and personal with someone, she wouldn’t really want to hurt them (at least if she could get her knowledge any other way).  She definitely becomes more helpful than harmful as the series progresses.   I guess I just wanted opinions on this?  From mutuals? Discuss?  No fighting? I think the fandom has room for an infinite amount of headcanons?   Although I am hoping that people will tell me that I’m not wrong to feel weird about the turbo “strap down the specimen and fetch me the earplugs” type of Entrapta headcanon.  To me, she strikes me as being more like Moira Brown of Fallout 3 (a canon for a mature audience that could and did get away with gruesome human experiments as part of its plotline, just with other characters)... Moira is cheerful and if you do her questline, you will get hurt for science, but she’s there to patch you up and doesn’t want any real harm to come to you.  Meh. *Wonders.*

deep in the meadow - chapter 7 (hunger games au)
read it here! (tw for: death and blood)
snippet under cut↴
They’d been walking through the forest for about five hours and Adora’s feet hurt. Annoyingly, they hadn’t come across another Tribute and Octavia was starting to get antsy. It seemed Rogelio was too because he just kept throwing punches at the air. Every so often, one of them would turn to glare at Adora for suggesting the walk and honestly, Adora didn’t blame them. The academies practically promised them a lot of deaths and fights, but so far they’d only experienced the bloodbath (which Adora was trying extremely hard to forget) and she could tell that the bloodthirst was setting in.
Her sword bumped against her leg as they stepped over roots and ducked under branches. Her hand was constantly hovering over the hilt and she was on high alert for any sound. The longer they walked, the more the constant bumping got on her nerves and she was getting closer to just ripping the whole thing off. But they were in the Games and she couldn’t let her guard down because of a stupid sword. So she just added it to the pile of things she was going to ignore.

She-Ra characters as Pokemon Battle Themes
Because my brain is really scraping the bottom of the barrel to find something fun to do, so let’s scratch two hyperfixations at once
Main characters:
Adora - Trainer Red/Blue Battle Tree theme (Gen 7). If you know the context for this theme - the protagonist of the first game enjoying a hard-earned break as a young adult, next to his now-supportive rival and best friend/boyfriend - then  this song is PERFECT for Adora.
She-Ra - Gen 7 Champion Theme. This is infamous for being the PLAYER’s champion theme, but Alola’s themes of drawing power from the land and protecting it from aliens fits She-Ra to a T. Magnificient theme!
Catra - Gladion’s Theme for s1 and s5. Has those GUITARS, and CHILD ABUSE, man!  Guzma’s theme is a good S3 Catra alternative. She is very similar to both characters. Gen 1 trainer battle is a good third option, to match Blue, AND it has Guitars! You can suggest N’s theme... but in my opinion, ADORA is closer to N than Catra is!!!  So it’d only play if it was Adora vs. Catra!
Glimmer - Diantha’s theme. It is glittery, it is a Champion Theme, what more do you want me to say??? Alternatively, Iris’s theme.  Or, if I want to play on her edgy side more... Marnie’s theme and Piers’ theme, as a pair!!!  I nearly suggested N’s theme but it just doesn’t fit her musically.
Bow - B2W2 Gym Battle Theme. Or alternatively, Gen 7 Trainer Battle (original). Or Gen 5 rival like Scorpia.  Sorry Bow, but you’re too much of a goof to get a high level theme. He has both of Cheren’s themes instead!!!
Scorpia -  Gen 5 Rival, because she’s as goofy, kind and loyal as Bianca..... but Gen 5 Elite 4 for her post-Garnet awakening because, holy shit, she was ferocious. It matches her Black Garnet theme.
Entrapta - Platinum Frontier Brain theme. Nerdy, intense, and full of wonder. And one of the best themes. Colress theme is also a great fit since they’re the same character.  Or Barry’s Theme which is friendly but makes me feel like  I’m having a heart attack.
Hordak - Team Galactic Cyrus theme (the original - the USUM remix goes a bit TOO hard for him). Obvious space theme. Hordak is just a Cyrus kinnie anyway.  I don’t think any other song fits as well as this.
Horde Prime - DENNIS.  Super terrifying USUM version.  Prime is literally Ghetsis so yeah.  Alternatively, Lusamine’s theme. Or her second theme for the final minutes of the show.
Shadow Weaver - Gen 5 Elite 4. Strange choice for a Lusamine type, I know, but when I think of ghosts and dark types, I think of these guys. It’s dark and it fits Scorpia’s theme too with the Black Garnet. If you have suggestions for SW let me know because Lusamine’s themes are good for her too.
Side characters below:
Netossa - Cynthia’s theme. Yes, I’m giving Netossa the theme for the coolest character in Pokemon. Any problems? She deserves it! She is the She-Ra equivalent of Cool Aunt Cynthia. Also we ALMOST share a name. I deserve it too!
Spinerella - Johto Gym leader/E4 theme (Gen 4). Spinerella doesn’t get much character, but she IS a powerhouse, AND a cool wife - she screams of Gym Leader/Elite 4. For Johto, both parties have the same theme, AND there is a giant beast that blows wind everywhere -  Lugia, one of my favourite legendaries.
Mermista and Sea Hawk - Vs. Team Aqua/Magma Original Version.They deserve to be chaotic pirates!!  This is also one of the best villain themes, and the most charming oldschool villain team. The goofy trumpet version fits them more nicely than the hyper-intense gen6 version.
Frosta - Gen 4 Elite 4. First of all, matches Scorpia’s gen 5 take. Secondly, if any Princess would be a Sinnoh Elite 4 member, it would be Frosta, Master of Ice. She’s serious enough a character that I think she could kill me.
Perfuma - Zinnia Battle Theme. I have decided to be nice to Perfuma and give her this epic theme because she was okay in season 5. Its relaxed yet strong free flowing nature fits her vine powers, at least.
Emily/Darla/the Beast Island bot - Nebby battle theme. Because these guys deserve their own theme, and what better fit than this incredible scifi tune for a Pokemon whose potential and humanity was brought out by a socially impossible young aristocrat with no friends? (Poggers to how good this theme was - I forgot until I listened to it for this post!)
Micah - Kahuna theme (Gen 7). He’s a master of the previous generation, and very powerful, just like the Kahunas. The theme is scary and mystic but also fun and lighthearted, just like Micah.
Angella - Black/White Gym Leader. I’m gonna be honest, the instruments don’t scream Angella, but her role... it is similar to the various Gym Leaders of gen 5 - an older, experienced guardian who wants to protect the young protagonists from danger, but isn’t able to do so.
Light Hope - Aether Battle Theme. It’s not necessarily that I think swing fits Light Hope, but more that the Aether Foundation does. A dehumanizing Evil shrouding itself as good. Lusamine’s Theme is a good alt but personally I think the BACKGROUND theme fits her best.
Mara - Champion Lance/Trainer Red Battle (Gen 4). All of She-Ra’s themes also apply to Mara, but if you were fighting Mara  in a Pokemon game? No theme would be more epic than this. Adora vs her Predecessor!!!!
Double Trouble/Flutterina - Klara’s Theme (Gen 8 DLC). Another toxic little shit that you can’t help but love. I think Double Trouble and Klara would get along nicely...
Madame Razz - Mustard’s Theme (Gen 8 DLC). These people are the same character, no?
Wrong Hordak, Melog, and Swift Wind - Toby Fox’s Battle Tower. I think these background therapy pets friends deserve a theme. The Battle Tower is exactly the place you would encounter them! An alternative is the Hoenn Battle Frontier theme... I’ve got the gen 6 version here - it’s so good!
Anyway that’s pretty much everyone worth casting! Let me know what you think.

ok i MIGHT have another religious meta :/ brace yourselves
we’ve said the heart of etheria is a metaphor for adora’s heart / embracing her desires but it gets even more insane when you think about how the first ones are a metaphor for organized christianity.
in that one Between The Sheets interview noelle talked about how she was raised to believe the only path to true happiness is following god, giving up your life in sacrifice to him. and she struggled to break out of that mindset in college when she met people, specifically gay people, who didnt believe in god yet were still genuinely happy
now think about this line in 5x08
Tumblr media
the first ones constructed “restraints” around the Heart to turn it into a weapon for their own purposes--a clear metaphor for the way the church manipulates and “restrains” the desires of gay people, yet all along they’re taught that it will “enhance” their life / their ability to love in the way god supposedly intended
its reiterated in 5x11 when the failsafe is described as an artifact that can “break the restraints the first ones built and set the stolen magic free.” so adora takes the failsafe and goes to search for the Heart (her own heart) in order to break the restraints of the first ones (religious indoctrination) and set the magic free (be happy and gay and in love 😭🌈)
also i love what horde prime says about the terrifying giant monster that the first ones left behind to guard the heart
Tumblr media
it speaks to the experience of your own family/church/community preventing you from understanding yourself and loving who you are. the guardian of the Heart is not just a monster, it’s a metaphor for some of the most intimate and painful obstacles that gay kids have to overcome. and that’s another reason why it’s so fucking powerful that SHADOW WEAVER, the character coded as a homophobic mother figure, sacrifices herself to defeat it for them.
..yeah cool cool im just gonna cry through the rest of this lkdfjldlkjd
its also important how catra is nearly killed by this metaphorical monster of homophobia, in an effort to protect adora from it. but that wasn’t her responsibility! it was shadow weaver’s. catra’s fate in all this was simply discovering the true power of love with adora... helping her break the “restraints” and release the Heart’s magic, release the magic in her own heart, by confessing her love for her.
something else ive been thinking about is how the threat of adora’s death could be viewed in a not-so-literal way, more as a metaphor for the death of her soul. adora’s willingness to give up her desires and die for her “destiny” is analogous to the bible saying you have to “deny yourself” (Matthew 16:24), “crucify the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:24), “give your body as a living sacrifice” (Romans 12:1). like you have to die to self in order to find true happiness. but then catra shows her another way.. she tells adora you don’t have to deny your desires to be happy in life or to have real purpose. you don’t have to be christian to be happy. (ofc many people are both religious and gay, this is just noelle’s story).
i have to mention the season 4 finale too, how the first ones nearly succeeded in using adora as a weapon but adora resisted light hope’s control and shattered the symbol of that “destiny.” she felt so lost without she-ra (without religion?) until catra inspired her to reclaim her sense of purpose, her new transformation being a manifestation of love but especially lesbian love.
...... so in summary -wipes sweat off forehead- 😭 the first ones weaponizing / building restraints for the heart of etheria is a metaphor for 1) cult-ish christian leaders manipulating gay people and 2) the internalized homophobia that comes from growing up christian.. and catra’s love allows adora to break free of it 😌💘

2020 in animation - recap
Tumblr media
So, 2020.
Yeah, I have to say I’m not entirely satisfied. Would not recommend, 1 star.
But I would be willing to bump it to 1.5, if only because of one factor: the animation.
Because I have to say, this was the best animated end of the world so far! And if there was something that kept our spirits up, it was the cartoon industry!
Just like last year, I should preface this by saying that this is highly subjective selection. Even when one is confined to their Hobbit holes for better part of the year because of *waves hands* everything around,
Tumblr media
day still only has 24 hours, so I have missed a few shows. (I should also apologise for omitting a few major ones last year, like Milo Murphy’s Law S2, Ducktales, or She-Ra. This is why I started keeping a track this year). I’m sure I will catch up with those I missed this year some time in the future, but for now, let’s see what this year has gifted us with.
And right from the start, January opens the race with very interesting propositions. We were still riding on an incredibly high wave from last year, with Infinity Train season 2.
Tumblr media
This one focused on Tulip’s mirror, and pushed the season towards a much darker and complex story, diving deep into one’s personal journey and identity. There were tears, math, deer, and cops being murdered. Brutally.
t was followed by two newcomers: The Owl House and first season of Kipo and The Age of the Wonderbeast. Both of them would dominate first half of the year, with The Owl House’s traditional, week-to-week airings, and Kipo's seasons appearing in  June and October.
The Owl House, a strong contender in "What will be the Next Gravity Falls?" contest, invited us to a world full of magic, mystery, elongated owl demons and some dark secrets. It has also created a milestone for Disney, introducing an LGBT couple with characters of bisexual Luz Noceda and lesbian Amity Blight. Their Grom dance has risen to the top of my animates scenes, polling very closely to the unforgettable Kataango.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, Kipo has taken us to the post-apocalyptic world filled with mutant animals, revealing that despite the end of the world, our old vices and animosities have survived in underground burrows, and we have infected the overworld of giant doggos and suit-wearing frogs with them.
Kipo did not pull any punches regarding commentary about our society, at the same time giving us hope in the form of the main protagonist, who was able to spread friendship and understanding amongst the mutes, as well as the humans that had to survive. And in the world that we have found ourselves in, it was a pretty darn good lesson.
Tumblr media
February would bring end to two seasons of airing cartoons, Big Hero Six season 2 and Miraculous season 3, as well as another newcomer that won the hearts of fans: Glitch Techs, with its "second" season arriving in August. And while in my opinion he show wasn't as good as the other two new titles, I am clearly in minority, as the show about Ghostbuters-like team of game console technicians gained huge popularity... though not enough to keep the show afloat. As of writing this, it is currently in limbo, which is a shame, as the second set of 10 episodes finally added some much needed ongoing story.
Tumblr media
in March, another show from last year ended - Steven Universe Future. As we have expected, it tackled slightly more mature themes, showing how much Steven needed that therapy we have wished him, telling an important tale of finding one's worth and one's self. its ending might not have been as explosive as those of the original show, or the movie, but it left Steven’s story as open as an open road, and deep in our hearts, we all knew it would look like this.
Tumblr media
March was also the time when majority of western world caught the coronavirus, and that caused quite a turmoil with the movie and animation industry. One of the first victim of changed schedule was Disney's Onward, which was released on-line on Disney+ quickly after its theatrical release.
Tumblr media
I have mixed feelings towards “Onward”. For such interesting promise, I think it made a few questionable and down right boring turns, though the unorthodox message at the end of it was its strongest point, and it was one I haven’t seen in a while, so it was worth watching just for that.
April was relatively quiet (aside from more end of the world stuff); brought us third season of Ducktales that spread throughout the year, while May gave us final, fifth season of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
Tumblr media
To my eternal shame, I missed on this show when it premiered, and due to the lockdown, I binge-watched the previous four right in time for powerful and explosive season 5. And even though Catra and Adora finally gave us exactly what we needed, some fans felt slightly unsatisfied, calling for a movie, like the Steven Universe one to be made. And I’d be all for it, the rest of universe needs saving from the Horde! Also, cats in space - hilarious.
Tumblr media
May also revealed a new player on the streaming field: HBO Max, who surprised us with new Looney Tunes Cartoons, much more in the spirit of the legendary originals than the often-criticised Looney Tunes Show from 2011-2014. And in my opinion, it did; one could feel the same fluidity in animation, dedication to slapstick, and synchronisation with music than in the very first cartoons with Bugs and Daffy.
HBO Max would, however, return in June with first of series of Adventure Time original movies called "Distant Lands". The first centred around BMO, with second one - Obsidian giving us a glimpse into Bonnibel and Marceline's lives.
Tumblr media
Distant Lands allowed people to revisit the odd, odd world of Ooo and learn about its colourful inhabitants, taking turns to seeing their past and the future, an, as usual, showing us that post-apocalyptic world can teach us valuable and meaningful lessons.
Just in time for full lockdown in our burrows, aforementioned Kipo season 2 premiered in June, together with another cartoon movie, this time featuring We Bare Bears. While their movie wasn't anything to write songs about, it was exactly like the show, providing some wholesome content right when we needed it.
Tumblr media
And just in case you needed more wholesome adventures, Craig of the Creek's second season ended, and its third season began, reminding us of HOW COOL LIFE WAS WHEN OUTERNET WASN’T SCARY AND WE COULD STILL WALK OUTSIDE FOR FUN AND NOT TO HUNT TOILET PAPER.
Tumblr media
Just like last year, July was not dogs' days, but frogs'. Amphibia season 2 started raining on our heads, but unlike last year, its schedule wasn't a daily one, spreading the episodes throughout the Summer and early Autumn, with its second part arriving in February of 2021. There were more roadtrips, more mysteries and MORE MARCY.
Tumblr media
August was equally strong: aforementioned Glitch Techs "season 2" premiered, offering better and more plot-heavy episodes than the first ten episodes. Unfortunately, the show's future is unclear; the uneven divide of plot between the seasons probably contributed to the show not being renewed. 10 new episodes apparently are written, but await in sleep mode, until Nickelodeon remembers about it.
Tumblr media
HBO MAX picked up Infinity Train for its third season, after being derailed by Cartoon Network. And if you thought that killing a mirror cop was shocking... then this season has pushed the limit of what can be shown in modern children's cartoon to a frightening degree. The schedule was once again, weirder, with first five episodes airing on the day of the premiere, ending with a cliffhanger (literally) that only contributed to the shock factor and made us wait anxiously for its conclusion. It was bold, it was dark, it was memorable.
Tumblr media
And just like Glitch Techs, Infinity Train waits on a side track, unsure if it will be picked up, or will it be abandoned and left as a canvas for graffiti artists.
However, to end the Summer, a truly amazing TV movie has arrived on Disney Plus, where we came back to good, old Danville and could witness Candace against the universe. The new Phineas and Ferb movie brought back the glorious memories of this fantastic show, with the same humour, writing, abundance of catchy songs and a surprisingly deep moral.
Tumblr media
In September we have seen the start of Big Hero 6 season 3 and a odd change of format. Instead of standalone 22-minute episodes, the show now consists of two 11-minute segments. In opinion of many, this weakened the stories, forcing them to be more comedy-oriented, and shortening the potential emotional drama. Still, it gave us funny, short stories, but they did clash with the two previous season, not to mention the movie.
Tumblr media
However, if that wasn't up to your taste, Ducktales season 3 also started airing, and continued its first part up until December with more action- and plot-driven episodes, including the Darkwing Duck crossover, serving as a pilot of the spin-off.
Later in December fans have learned that Season 3 will be its last, which broke the hearts of many duck fans; however, it seems that the season has been written as the last one in mind, and the news of the ending was known to the creators, which gives us hope for a kick-ass finale somewhere in 2021.
Tumblr media
Miraculous New York, telling arguably one of the most mature storylines, opened the "Heroez" world to some new characters and new opportunities, with two more specials, taking place in Shanghai and Brazil, meant to air somewhere next year. AND I DO HOPE WE WILL SEE MORE LOCAL FOOD VENDOR SUPERHEROES LIKE HOT DOG DAN.
Tumblr media
October was the month of two season 3's: Carmen Sandiego and Kipo. In case of Carmen, as it is usual with Netflix, the "season" was only a half-one, with just a handful standalone episodes, and just a dash of more ongoing plot.
Tumblr media
For Kipo, however, season 3 was the end, and what a glorious one it was. Fans were saddened to learn of it, but Kipo was always imagined as a 3-part story, and it showed. The finale proved more than satisfying ending to the plot, elevating Kipo to one of the smartest cartoon characters we should all try to aspire to.
Tumblr media
In November, Distant Lands: Obsidian aired, focusing on everyone’s favourite candy/vampire couple, and the long and complicated love between Bonnibel and Marceline. And as usual, it showed us that relationships are not always as straightforward as we would like them to be, but with enough music and teamwork, no enemy is big enough.
Tumblr media
For the next new show, I’ve waited with the most amount of excitement and anxiety. Because while I was completely fine with other reboots and re-imaginings to take creative takes, new Animaniacs, (airing on Hulu) had to be perfect and had to be the lightning that struck twice.
And sadly... it wasn’t. It was still good, but some people criticised (incorrectly imho) the amount of political topics, while I mourned almost total cast-ration of additional characters, aside from Pinky and the Brain. This truly weakened the possibilities it could have had. It was still very good, but you can feel that some of the original charm was lost, due to these odd, odd limitations.
Tumblr media
December brought us a new original Apple TV movie, Wolfwalkers. A beautifully animated folk tale of friendship and social divides, and how short-sight can cause the collapse of both arguing sides, reminding me very much of the intelligence and heart of original “How to Train Your Dragon”.
Tumblr media
We’ve had to wait two years for the return of arguably one of the most wholesome shows out there: Hilda. Second season dived into deeper mysteries that permeate the rich and colourful troll-ridden land, we saw the return of some familiar characters, and introduced a whole new storyline, that ended with a surprising cliffhanger. Still as wholesome, but now with a tiny bit of Police incompetence. Also Twig, lots of Twig.
Tumblr media
Just like Onward, Pixar’s highly anticipated Soul aired on Disney+, telling a very mature story about finding one’s purpose in life, what that purpose actually means, and whether it exists at all. Beautifully animated, with fantastic soundtrack, it was a stunning tribute to creativity, and it never dumbed down its profound, open message about following your dream.
Tumblr media
And just if you thought that Soul was going to be 2020′s last note (pun very much intended), right before the year ended, DC Super Hero Girls concluded its first season on a rather anti-climactic two-parter. That being said, the season, running from March of last year, was packed with short, bite-sized, funny stories, taking interesting spins on existing comic book characters. For a comic book noob like me, it was perfectly fine, and I can’t wait for the second season next year.
Tumblr media
And so, we have reached the series finale of humanity.
2020 ends in just under a day. What will 2021 bring us? I do not know, and if the animated shows of this year have taught me anything, is that the future is an always open book, full of worries and challenges, but also opportunities and possibilities.
...
And in reality I was too lazy to check any news sites about upcoming projects.

how about a fic of Adora noticing being the jealous one after noticing other women give Catra attention.
Tumblr media
i have been getting prompts like this since Mine, and honestly, hell yea. i deadass started working on this in 2019 and well. its finally finished. this is who i am folks. thanks so much to @kittens-and-foxes, @magicchalkdust, and lunatica (ao3) for the prompts! prompts are still open! i’m just a slave to writers block. evidently
Oh, How the Turntables

Adora was not a jealous person. She was confident with where she was in her life and always had been. Trying her best and being proud of that was something that was basically sewn into her DNA.
Adora was not jealous. Never had been, and never would be.
She wasn’t jealous.
She was just…a little upset.
Or how Adora handles being jealous. A significantly less fun sequel to Mine.

Adora was not a jealous person. She was confident with where she was in her life and always had been. Trying her best and being proud of that was something that was basically sewn into her DNA.
Adora was not jealous. Never had been, and never would be.
She wasn’t jealous.
She was just…a little upset.
It wasn’t really that big of a deal. Honestly it wasn’t a big deal at all. In fact it wasn’t even a deal at all. Catra was just making friends. Which Adora, for the record, was extremely happy about.
Catra was making friends with some of the people in the Royal Guard at Bright Moon and it was awesome! People were accepting her! And, like, treating her with respect like she obviously deserves as a literal war hero! So naturally, Adora was happy to hear this. Adora was enthused!
Obviously, okay?
It’s just that Catra had recently become closer with a few of her friends in the Royal Guard which meant they were out all day training and running drills, and then out all night getting drinks and singing bar shanties or whatever soldiers did together. Adora was so glad that Catra was fitting in and being accepted. That goes without saying.
But.
Adora also really, really, really missed her girlfriend.
Like.
Adora missed her a lot.
As simple as that.
Although, it didn’t help that one of Catra’s new friends was the totally smart, pretty and badass Captain Kassandra. And it also didn’t help that Captain Kassandra was definitely Catra’s best friend in the guard which meant Catra and Captain Kassandra were spending the majority of their days together.
Alone.
And it’s not like Adora thought anything would happen! Catra would never cheat, okay? She wouldn’t! She just might...you know. Realize that Captain Kassandra was so, so much better, and smarter, and stronger, and prettier, and cooler than Adora.
And Catra might want to break up.
Which Adora definitely didn’t want.
— . —
“Hey, Catra?” Adora called as she was pulling her hair up into a ponytail.
“Yeah?” Catra called from the closet where she was trying to decide between two identical burgundy sports bras.
“I was, uh,” Adora paused as she grabbed her hair tie with her teeth off her wrist. “I was thinking that it might be fun if we went out tonight? Go into town and grab dinner or something? Have a little date?” She asked with a tentative smile as she finished tying off her hair.
Catra turned to face her properly, lowering both sports bras. “Tonight?” She asked, not sounding excited like Adora had thought she’d be.
The lack of enthusiasm made Adora a little nervous. She licked her lips and continued. “Yeah. We’ve both been really busy lately, and I finally have a night off from--you know--She-Ra stuff. So I was, you know, just wondering if we could, I don’t know. Go on a date,” Adora bumbled, her nerves getting to her the longer she went without an answer.
“Shit, tonight?” Catra asked, her shoulders slumping alongside Adora’s heart. “I can’t. I have a game tonight.”
“Wait, you have a what tonight?” Adora asked, immediately confused.
“Oh, yeah. Sorry, I meant to tell you. Me and the Guard started up a Softball team. Bright Moon Royal Guard against Entrapta’s Robot Army,” Catra explained, a little smile curling up her lips which Adora knew meant that Catra had really been enjoying playing Softball.
Adora was, admittedly, a little hurt by the fact that Catra hadn’t even thought to tell her about this. Adora was always super supportive of everything Catra did and would have loved the opportunity to cheer her on in a very literal and vocal way.
But, Adora supposed, she had been really busy with She-Ra stuff lately so it made sense that Catra forgot to mention things. Especially when they really only saw each other at dinner and when they got in and out of bed everyday.
Adora pushed down her hurt feelings and pressed on. “Alright, well. When’s the game? I’ll come and maybe we could grab a bite or something after,” she suggested.
Catra winced. “After games, C.K. usually buys everyone a burger,” Catra explained. C.K. So we’re calling Captain Kassandra C.K. now. Adora suddenly craved physical violence.
Catra continued, not noticing Adora’s mounting frustration. “It’s like--I don’t know--a team bonding thing,” Catra explained with a shrug. “You could come to the game though! I’ll hit a homer for you,” she added, sending Adora a deliciously wicked grin that Adora couldn’t even enjoy due to the slowly mounting rage within her.
Adora took a deep breath, suppressing the anger for the time being, and forced a smile. “That sounds awesome, babe. I’ll….be there for the game then.”
Catra grinned at that and darted over to press a kiss to Adora’s cheek. “I’ll look for you in the stands,” she said, practically glowing with happiness, and just like that, all of Adora’s rage and jealousy melted away. This was something Catra enjoyed. Having friends and maintaining them was important to Catra. So it was important to Adora.
Adora turned and stole a proper kiss from Catra. “Leave your alternate jersey for me and I’ll wear it,” she suggested with a soft smile.
Catra nodded eagerly before she disappeared back into the closet. She came back out wearing one of Adora’s white and blue sports bras, and, honestly, that made everything a little better.
— . —
Adora had no idea how Softball worked, but Gods, was she becoming a fan quickly. Everything from the tight white pants Catra wore, to the slashed up cap she wore to let her ears through was doing things for Adora. Adora was pretty sure she was actually learning less about Softball the longer she spent in the stands. Probably because she was happily staring at Catra’s ass instead of the game.
The whole experience probably would have been a net positive if it wasn’t for what happened at the very end of the game. Catra must’ve hit a particularly impressive ball (Adora wasn't exactly paying attention to the ball or where it was going as much as she was focusing on where the hitter was going and doing) because as she dashed around the diamond, everyone around her was cheering and freaking out. The Bright Mood Guard left the make-shift dugout and ran onto the pitch. They swarmed Catra as she passed home. They all wrapped her in a hug before Captain Kassandra tossed her up into the air and then sat Catra on her shoulder.
Jealousy burned inside of Adora. That was Adora’s move! Adora was absolutely the only one allowed to toss Catra into the air and catch her on her shoulder! Why the hell was someone else doing that?! Was this a common thing? Did Captain Kassandra toss Catra all the time?
Adora was about three seconds away from going full-on beast mode on the Captain. The only thing that stopped her was the way Catra pulled her cap off in celebration, waving it excitedly in Adora’s direction. The elation on Catra’s face—the pure joy that was clear from whatever game-winning hit she’d made—was entirely enough to cool Adora’s temper.
Catra looked radiant out there. And she deserved to be praised like that. She deserved to be celebrated and loved by her friends. Adora wanted that for Catra so badly, and if it wasn’t for the ugly jealous monster that was living rent free inside of her for whatever reason, Adora was sure she’d 100% be just as happy as Catra was in that moment.
So, with her mind made up, Adora grinned and waved back. She cupped her hands around her mouth and cheered loudly. She made a heart with her hands and held it up above her head for Catra to see. Catra must’ve seen it because she blushed a little darker and bit her lip in a way that made Adora’s blood burn in a very different way.
If only Adora wouldn’t have to go home alone after the game.
— . —
Adora decided to wait up for Catra. She wanted to show Catra exactly how proud of her game-winning home-run she was. Adora lit candles around their room while she waited, and even changed into some of the more frilly underwear she owned for nights exactly like this. She kept Catra’s jersey on, though, and made herself comfortable in bed to wait.
And wait.
And wait.
Adora waited long after the sun went down behind the back hills, long after the candles burned down to nubs, and long after the lacey bra she wore became too uncomfortable to continue wearing. Adora didn’t want to admit defeat, but eventually the mood was lost, and she could barely keep her eyes open.
It was with a new level of bitterness, and a little heartbreak, that Adora cleaned up the candles, slipped into pyjamas, and put Catra’s jersey away. This time when Adora curled up into bed, she didn’t wait. She closed her eyes and fell asleep.
If the smell of candle smoke was still in the air when Catra got back, then so what.
— . —
Adora felt very off for the rest of that week. She hadn’t even heard Catra come in that night, and when she woke up, Catra was curled up into a ball on her own side of the bed. Something about not even waking up in Catra’s arms left a sour taste in her mouth.
Adora knew, logically, that Catra hadn’t made her any promises to come back early that night. She had said that she’d be out with the team, and Adora had agreed to that. It was just that...after a game like that, the first one Adora had gone to, shouldn’t Catra have wanted to come home and celebrate with Adora? Shouldn’t she have at least come back at a decent hour? Catra had only said that she’d be getting dinner with her team. Did getting burgers really take that long?
What else had Catra been doing out there?
That thought alone was enough to leave Adora in a horrible mood for the rest of the week.
She destroyed many straw filled dummies, and snapped at anyone who so much as thought about asking her what was wrong, including Catra.
Especially Catra.
Adora hadn’t been in this bad of a mood since the war--since the time she hadn’t slept for weeks at a time.
And the worst part? Adora knew she was being unreasonable. She knew she was being dramatic and was definitely blowing things out of proportion. It was just that—
The jealous little monster that lived in her mind rent free was slowly taking over.
— . —
Adora was lounging in the bath, trying to make herself feel better though aggressive self-care, when she heard Catra come in. It was already late into the evening. Adora would usually be in bed this time of night, and Adora was beginning to think (unreasonably) that Catra was coming back late on purpose.
“Adora?” Catra called as she noticed the bed was empty. She sounded a little afraid and suddenly Adora was just tired. And sad. And frustrated. She was so, so frustrated with herself and this stupid situation. She didn’t want to be upset at Catra anymore.
“In here!” Adore called back as she moved her hands a little anxiously through the bubbles still floating on the surface.
Catra appeared in the doorway and smiled tentatively. She looked concerned and tired.
“Hey,” Adora said softly.
“Hey,” Catra repeated, her voice just as soft.
“How was your night?” Adora asked. “I missed you at dinner.”
Catra’s shoulders dropped a little and she nodded. She stepped into the bathroom and sat down on the floor right next to the tub, her knees pulled up to her chest as she looked at Adora. Catra looked small like that. Small and afraid.
“Missed you too,” Catra said back, her voice just above a whisper.
Adora bit her lip a little anxiously and had to look away. She couldn’t look at Catra knowing she was the one who made her feel uncertain like this. But...wasn’t it because Adora herself felt uncertain that this whole thing had happened?
Adora pulled in a deep breath and forced herself to look back at Catra. “I’m sorry I’ve been...rough this week,” she said.
Catra leaned her head onto the side of the tub. “Are you gonna tell me what I did?” Catra asked, her voice soft and non-judgemental.
“Catra you didn’t...do anything,” Adora said. “And...well. That’s the problem. I feel like we never see each other anymore. I feel like we don’t talk.”
Catra straightened up, her shoulders coming up in a defensive stance. It was clear she was afraid of what else was coming from this conversation. Adora reached out and placed her hand on top of one of Catra’s knee.
“I just really miss you Catra. All the time, even when I wake up next to you,” Adora admitted.
“I’m sorry,” Catra said immediately, her ears pressing back flat onto her head. “I…”
“Hey, no, I should have said something—” Adora said but Catra cut her off, her eyes wide in realization.
“Oh my gods,” Catra breathed. “You did say something. You wanted—and I totally just brushed you off to hang out with the Guard. Adora—” Catra spoke frantically, and it was Adora who cut her off this time.
“Catra, hey, no,” Adora said as she moved closer. “No, you didn’t brush me off. You just. You’ve never had a really solid group of friends before. Of course you got caught up. I like that you have these people who like you and want to hang out with you. I’ve been so busy lately and I’ve been so thankful that you’ve found these people to keep you company when I can’t,” Adora said honestly.
“It’s just that...I’m not used to having to share your attention. And it’s...it’s making me feel a little insecure—which I hate. I don’t want to be jealous of your friends. I don’t want to keep you away from them,” she admitted, looking at her hands now, ashamed of how she was feeling.
Catra reached out and threaded their fingers. “Adora…” she breathed softly as she squeezed Adora’s hand. “You should have said something, dummy,” she said affectionately, reaching out with her free hand to smooth Adora’s hair back and turn her face up.
“I’ve only been spending so much time with those idiots because I’ve been wanting to give you space to relax,” Catra admitted. “I thought that having me around, wanting your attention after you’d had to listen to people bitch and complain all day would just cause you more stress.” She leaned forward some more to press a kiss to Adora’s lips softly. “I’ve been missing you too, Adora.”
Adora let out a sigh of relief, and then a sound that was halfway between a laugh and a sob. She shot forward and wrapped her arms around Catra in a hug, holding her tight. “You’re sure you’re not unhappy with me? You wouldn’t rather be with C.K.?” Adora asked, finally voicing her deepest concerns.
“What?” Catra asked softly as she held Adora tighter, seemingly undisturbed by the fact that she was getting soaked by the bath. “Adora, Captain Kass is married. To a man. And besides that, I don’t want anyone but you. You make me happier than anything.”
Adora let out another sigh of relief. “Oh, I’m so glad,” she breathed as she pressed her face into Catra’s neck.
— . —
That little jealous monster was finally evicted.

What if season 5 was two seasons?
So watching through season 5, I kept noticing how fast the pacing had to be with the amount plot threads there were and how often I went ‘I wish we saw more of X’. So as I’ve mentioned a couple of times, I’ve started wondering if it might’ve been better if its story had been spread over two seasons rather than one. Now, obviously I understand that kind of change would not have been in the crew’s hands and no matter what they wanted would likely have been impossible. This is not intended as a ‘they should’ve just done this’ but as a thought experiment. Would a sixth season even have worked? So I’m gonna try and figure out how season 5′s content might’ve been done over two seasons in an alternate universe. In order to keep straight how far in the seasons we are, I’m gonna number the episodes 5-1 to 5-13 and 6-1 to 6-13 for clarity.
-5-1: We’re gonna start off immediately inserting an extra episode: The Fall of Bright Moon. Rather than a time skip, we get to see the first days of the invasion and the evacuation of Bright Moon in the face of overwhelming force. Micah has to switch back into being king, Adora has to deal with losing She-Ra, Bow has to deal with losing Glimmer. There’s a major subplot about Scorpia working up the courage to apologise to Entrapta and the two of them reconnecting. Perfuma probably helps her with that. That sounds like a pretty busy episode, but I think the first two Velvet Glove scenes from Horde Prime should probably be moved to it to not just leave Catra and Glimmer hanging completely.
-5-2 to 5-4: Horde Prime, Launch, and Corridors stay mostly the same. Since I moved the first Velvet Glove scenes to 5-1 and we can probably cut a bit of exposition from Horde Prime with the addition of that episode, these episodes get a couple minutes extra, which is split between an extra Glimmer and Catra in jail scene and some more of Scorpia and Entrapta’s friendship in Launch.
-5-5 and 5-6: An extra season gives us time for worldbuilding and more of the new characters, and since I like the Star siblings I’m gonna selfishly give them a bunch more screen time. The plan to save Catra takes more preparation in this version, leading Best Friend Squad and the Star siblings to go on an adventure on another planet after Stranded, one that is under Horde occupation but hasn’t been destroyed by them. They’re there for either information or some kind of device they’ll need to get on the Velvet Glove, but end up sowing the seeds for a local rebellion on the planet. We’ll see more of that plot later on.
-5-7: Save the Cat. It’s perfect as is.
-5-8: Taking Control’s A plot, enhanced with some scenes from Don’t Go into a full episode.
-5-9: This is where Taking Control’s B plot with the chipped Etherians goes. To go with it, Best Friend Squad is going on another space adventure after a rendez-vous with the Star siblings while they try and escape the Horde. I’m thinking maybe Hordak could be one of the clones searching for them, and while he doesn’t come face-to-face with Entrapta we could see some more of his conflicting feelings building in the course of this. Just a moment’s hesitation on his part allows Best Friend Squad to escape. Catra befriending Glimmer and Bow is a major part of this episode, and it basically bridges the gap between the little overtures between them in Taking Control and Catra as a part of Best Friend Squad in Shot in the Dark.
-5-10: Kyle, Lonnie, and Rogelio only get a cameo in season 5, and that’s something I really want to change. I want to give them a ‘Lower Decks’ episode where they’re basically just trying to go about their lives post-Horde but rapidly discovering the war is impossible to ignore. I feel like we don’t see enough of the normal Etherians in general, and I think these three are a great way to show how they’re doing.
-5-11: Perils of Peekablue. However, the scene at the end where it turns out Micah is already chipped and so are enormous amounts of Etherians doesn’t happen yet.
-5-12 and 5-13: So now I need to have a big season finale happen, and unfortunately Shot In The Dark, while a great episode, is also a little too low-energy to fit the bill. So what I’m gonna do is make it the B-plot of a finale two-parter. The A-plot is set on Etheria, and is basically some big climactic business where the Princesses, General Juliet, (remember her?) and many common Etherians take the fight back to the chipped princesses, and things go well until disaster strikes and Micah gets chipped. Pretty vague, I know. The ‘Lower Decks’ episode we did sets up a lot of the plot here; Lonnie, Rogelio, and Kyle are probably involved in it. The two-parter ends with the big ‘Oh fuck everyone’s chipped’ moment at the end of Perils of Peekablueas the big season-ending cliffhanger. After that scene, we switch to Best Friend Squad landing on Etheria, and that’s how season 5 ends.
-6-1: I think An Ill Wind would be a solid season opener as is.
-6-2 to 6-10: Yeah, I’m gonna take this whole block of episodes in one go, because this is where it gets complicated. Return to the Fright Zone and Failsafe take place in this block, but it’s beyond my ability to figure out the full plot developments of this entire season. While for season 5 I can keep to the structure of Best Friend Squad’s space adventure, season 6 is gonna be a lot more freeform, and would presumably have major plot elements added. Here’s my thoughts on these nine episodes:
-The chipped princesses get unchipped earlier. They provide good heartwrenching moments, cool bossfights, and allow for major villains ranking below Prime without having to introduce new characters, but I think ultimately it does the chipped princesses a disservice since they just don’t get to show character in the second half of the season. Just compare how well we know Netossa as a character with how well we know Spinnerella. So they get unchipped over the course of these episodes and get to be with the Rebellion again afterwards. Mermista and Spinnerella get unchipped the same way as in canon. Scorpia actually gets to talk while chipped and has a heartwrenching confrontation with Catra in which she basically responds in the worst possible ways to Catra’s regrets (the same way we saw chipped Catra basically being am expression of her worst traits) and they have a fight that’s super rough for Catra, but Catra manages to damage her chip and save her. They have a better chat afterwards, and that’s when they make up and hug it out. I think Micah is the last one to be unchipped, and I might actually keep him chipped until Heart, Part 1 so Glimmer still gets that climactic confrontation with him. Now, a possible concern is that this means there’s just not gonna be enough ‘bosses’ around to fight in Heart. Solutions to this could include for example advanced robots, chipped minor characters like Huntara, Dumbface Octavia, and alien monsters. Maybe Hordak? Though I definitely want him back on the Velvet Glove’s bridge in time to give Prime his date with gravity.
-So that’s sort of the major arc, but there are several characters and plot threads that I feel could easily be an episode’s A- or B-plot in this bunch:
*Catra is mortified when she realises she caused Angella’s death and has a big freak-out over it and tries to run away, Glimmer confronts her and they deal with their feelings on the matter
*Another Kyle, Lonnie, and Rogelio episode
*A Wrong Hordak episode where he discovers his own identity and picks a name, also feat. Entrapta’s attempts to reach out to Hordak
*Madame Razz episode where Adora tries to get her help, possibly involving the Crystal Castle and George and Lance
*Sea Hawk and Double Trouble drama kids adventure where they try to save Mermista (I think Mermista vs. Sea Hawk and Mermista being unchipped gets moved to the end of this episode). These two were delightful for the little time we saw them together in Perils of Peekablue and I want Sea Hawk to somehow rope Double Trouble into an adventure.
*All the space adventures and world building I put in season 5 coming to a head when some form of space reinforcements led by the Star siblings come to help.
*And of course Return to the Fright Zone and Failsafe.
-6-11 to 6-13: Heart is now a three-parter, deal with it. Horde Prime is beaten at the end of part 2, or more likely the start of part 3, and the rest of part 3 is that sweet dénouement I crave.
So with all that laid out, let’s return to the question: would this work? I think if it had originally been written to be two seasons, the story could have easily worked for two. As is, I’m retrofitting a single season to be two, so some of the stuff I’ve added sounds rather redundant or vague. There are certainly enough plotlines and characters to make a split work, but of course those would’ve had to have been written into the plot from the start to not feel tacked on. Of course, brevity is the soul of wit, so even if two seasons had been an option, it’s quite possible a single that has too little time is still better than two that have too much.

i’m sure you’ve gotten this ask a million times but catra struggling with her birthday, if she even deserves the love she’s getting, adora giving her more in response, something cute and hurt/comfort like that
I actually haven’t, and I wrote a nice fluffy thing for y’all and everything, and.... okay let’s ruin it. -------------------------------------
A good day didn’t always mean a good night of sleep.
It was nothing particularly pointed - no ghosts talking to her, no friends reminding her what a terrible person she was, no city to stand over and watch burn. Just reliving everything - seeing the first time she fought Adora, kidnapping Bow and Glimmer from princess prom, banishing Entrapta, tearing Scorpia down bit by bit-
Catra gasped as her eyes flew open. Melog was half on top of her, nudging her cheek, licking away the tears that had fallen. Adora was still sleeping, breathing deep and even, face peaceful.
Don’t wake her up. Don’t wake her up, she’s happy, she had a good day, she had so much fun, don’t wake her up, don’t wake her up, don’t-
Melog leaned over her and gently headbutted Adora. She immediately jerked awake, groggy.
“Wha-”
Catra huffed, trying to scold Melog and realizing there was a distressing lack of air in her lungs. Adora sat up quickly, pulling Catra with her. “Hey, what’s wrong? It’s okay, you’re okay, deep breaths...”
She rubbed Catra’s back as she spoke, so gentle, so kind. Nothing she deserved.
A strangled sob wrestled its way out of her throat as she ducked her head, trying to hide the fresh wave of tears. Adora brushed her fingers through short, soft hair, still whispering that it was okay, everything was okay, she was okay...
Yeah, I’m okay. Maybe that’s the problem.
She took the comfort, selfishly, curling into Adora’s lap until her breathing calmed. Adora hummed, playing with her hair and rocking her. “Better?” she murmured. Catra shook her head. “What’s wrong?”
Don’t say it, it’s selfish. It’s selfish. You shouldn’t have even woken her up. She and Glimmer and Bow wasted so much time trying to give you a good birthday you don’t deserve-
Melog lifted themselves to rest on her back, squishing her into Adora’s back. She groaned. “Melog, knock it off-”
“Mrow.” Talk to her.
“No.” Melog grew slightly, putting more weight on her. “Ow - okay, okay!”
Melog purred, shrinking down to curl up next to the girls. Adora pulled away to look at Catra, raising an eyebrow. “I... I didn’t deserve any of this. Today. The gifts. Anything.”
“Hey.” Adora nudged her gently. “That’s not true. We did all this because we wanted to do something nice for you. We love you.”
“Well, maybe I don’t deserve that!” Catra shoved away, curling in on herself. Adora sighed faintly, pulling away. Maybe she was finally sick of Catra’s shit...
Then she was back, taking Catra’s hand and pressing something small and cool into it. Catra automatically brushed her thumb against it, recognizing the texture, the ridges. Adora’s Bright Moon pin.
“I love you,” she murmured. “Please stop being mean to the woman I love.”
Catra’s eyes filled with tears even as she laughed. “You’re such a dork.”
“Sure, but you took the pin, so what does that make you?”
“Someone who loves a dork.” She finally turned to press her face into Adora’s shoulder, sighing. “When I was... with Horde Prime... you know, after I sent Glimmer away... I dreamed a lot. He kept me asleep so he could fuck with my head without me fighting back. And I’d dream about... about being with you, just like this, and we’d be happy. And the only reason I know this is real is because the dreams didn’t hurt like this.” Adora’s arms tightened around Catra’s waist; she kissed the scars on the back of Catra’s neck. “Sometimes I feel like I should wake up and be back there. Like all of this has just been some... cruel twisted game he’s playing to make me feel worse when he pulls me out of it. And I’d deserve it, wouldn’t I? That... That was supposed to be it for me. The only thing I could do to make up for all the terrible things I did.”
“But it’s not,” Adora argued. “You do things every day to make up for what you did. You’re helping Scorpia figure out how to run a kingdom, you’re working in Salineas, you’re working with Glimmer... honestly I’m not sure what you do with Glimmer, but she seems a lot more organized. Every single day you accomplish more here, alive, than you would have by dying. At the very least, I think you’ve earned a good birthday. And everyone was happy to help make that happen.”
Catra sniffed, wiping her eyes. “I guess...”
“I know it’s hard to believe.” Adora kissed her temple. “But can you at least try and let us love you? Or believe that we think you’re good enough?”
Silence fell for a moment, save for the whispering babble of the waterfall. Finally, Catra scoffed. “Of course I believe you think I’m good enough. You’re such a bleeding heart.”
“Rude.” But Adora laughed anyway. Catra let out a long breath and closed her eyes, leaning a little more on Adora’s chest.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.” The words were said without hesitation. Maybe, for now at least, she could believe she deserved that much.

I rewatch Miraculous—The Evillustrator
Titled “The Artist” in it’s original French cuz Evillustrator sounds ridiculous.
Once again--this post uses screenshots from the French Dub version of Miraculous, translated by the good people at MiraculousSubs on tumblr. Yeah, I like the French version. FIGHT ME!!!!
“You march yourself down to the principals office! And show him that chicken scratch!”
... Bitch😒😒😒 What a tasteless, insensitive thing to say, Mrs. Crocker.  You’re setting a fine example for someone like, say, Chloe who bullies just about everyone but Adrien on a daily basis. Luka, Nathaniel, Nino and eventually Adrien—Marinette is popular with the boys.
“Artists can be so emotional.”
...Riiiiight, like you’re never not emotional.
“This is a group presentation, not pairs. Deal with it!!!”
Well at least Mrs. Crocker isn’t intimidated by Chloe’s status... like a certain principle i could mention.
...Marinette brings something important to light tho. Sabrina has no concept of what a healthy friendship is like since she’s never really experienced one. As far as she knew Chloe’s form of friendship was ideal. Which isn’t hard to understand. Sometimes it’s hard to see how bad a situation is when you’re too close to it. Sometimes you need to get some distance and take time to grow into yourself to really understand just how awful a toxic relationship is.
me: slowly looks in the direction of Adrien.
Tumblr media
Well as far as graffiti goes, it could be worse. One of the thing’s i love about Ladybug and Chat Noir’s partnership is how Chat Noir isn’t afraid to politely say something when he disagrees with Ladybug’s actions. Queen is usually a very responsible superheroine, but every once in a while she gets worked up and can act irrationally. Like with this episode: leaving Chloe unprotected in a fit of rage wasn’t cool. Or the whole Lila situation in Volpina.  It’s fair to note she usually owns up to it herself and apologizes at some point before the episode ends. This whole thing deserves a post of its own tho so more on that later
Ladybug: “Her name is Marinette. Really cute isn’t she?”
Marinette isn’t just cute, she’s BEAUTIFUL! Now if only she’d wear her hair down more often... Ladybug trusts Chat Noir to handle missions by himself <3<3<3
Chat Noir: “You’re out of danger. So see ya! Later.” Chloe: “Later? What about my presentation?!”
.......Do it yourself.
Tumblr media
He’s so fucking cute I CANNOT. I LOVE HIM TOO MUCH HALP!!!
Tumblr media
Explodes with laughter at Marinette’s f***ing face in this screenshot.
Ah yes, the famous “princess” moment which never made it into the English Dub. How many marichat fics have I read where they have Kitty calling her NOTHING but that? Too many, unfortunately.
 I’m not saying I hate his use of “princess” here. I just don’t like how it’s overused in fics, is all.
Tumblr media
I love this moment--and all the little details.
Chat Noir casually pulling Marinette close to him in a way that clearly shows he is comfortable doing so.
Marinette leaning away as he leans towards her whereas she’d be a puddle of petrified goo if this were Adrien. Here’s proof:
Tumblr media
Her pulling his hand off her waist with one hand and pushing his chin away with the other.
Him letting his arm drop and allowing her to put her arms around his neck before he lifts them away to safety.
Really, we can’t blame Marinette for not understanding Chat Noir loves Ladybug after this episode. He’s quick to show off to Marinette, not Ladybug, even tho he doesn’t know that’s her. Between that and the way he flirts with Ladybug, he’s kind of given her the impression that this is how he behaves around every pretty girl. Even though that couldn’t be further from the truth.
he immediately backs off when she shows she isn’t okay with this, because he’s a good boy and he’s not going to leave his hand there when she clearly doesn’t want it there.
To quote one of my favorite proposals ever, perhaps his “soul” understands what his “heart and mind” don’t yet know. That he’s held this one girl before. That he was meant to hold her. That they are meant to hold each other.
Hawk Moth: “Once I have them all in my grasp... I shall rule the world!”
That’s not even what Hawk Moth wants. To be fair I can see how the English Dub Team would make that mistake. Here’s what Hawk Moth said in the original French:
Tumblr media
It’s not an unreasonable conclusion to assume Hawk Moth means “world domination” when he says “absolute power.” We don’t learn until season two that his true goal doesn’t so much have to do with the world as it does with changing history.
 I kinda am hoping he’ll succeed, at least partially. I can see an “alternate timeline” episode being the result of Hawk Moth actually managing to make his wish--and Marinette and Adrien working together to fix the timeline. Kinda like the scenario we got in “Shera” when Catra managed to pull the switch. Hopefully no one gets “trapped between dimensions” though...
Sabrina: “Chloe lent [this beret] to me! She really is my BFF!”
I feel sorry for Sabrina...
Okay Adrien...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where the heck did you come from?
 Were you hiding inside a locker?
Did you bunny-hop over the top of the lockers?
 Did you phase through a wall?!?!?!
Adrien: Hey! Marinette: INTENSE AND SUDDEN SCREAMING Adrien: is unfazed and carries on with the conversation
Me:
Tumblr media
Adrien: “So what did you think of Chat Noir? Did you think he’s awesome?”
He wanted to know what she thought of him. My heart....!
In conclusion...! Adrien clearly has some sort of ninja skills, Marichat is a wonderful ship, and some of the mistakes made by the English translation team are understandable.
Sometimes.

For Want of a Skeletor
Entrapta hosts a Princess Alliance meeting at the Crypto Castle and absolutely nothing goes wrong. More Skeletor stories!
*
The lights were on late in Dryl.
Stars shone outside the windows. Entrapta sat hunched over her desk, studying datapads and readouts. A polite cough from the laboratory door caused her to look up from her work.
“Oh! I’m sorry Hordak, did I wake you?”
Her partner stepped softly into the room and shook his head. “Imp did. You know how he gets when either of us take too long to come to bed.”
Hordak crossed the cluttered floor and joined Entrapta at the desk. He was holding Imp in his arms, and the smaller, winged clone whined plaintively when he saw her. Entrapta kept her screens on, but leaned gratefully into Hordak’s side and curled a tendril of hair around his waist. She yawned, despite herself.
“I know. I just want to make sure I get everything right before the other princesses come over tomorrow.” She glanced back at the data, nervously tapping her fingertips together. “I’ve never hosted an Alliance meeting before! And this rescue will be our biggest mission since… well, you know. I don’t want to mess anything up.”
Hordak smiled. “Your diligence is admirable. But I also seem to recall someone telling me that imperfections are beautiful.”
Entrapta stuck out her tongue. “No fair.”
“I’m afraid the science is sound. Come to bed, my dear.”
The scientist scoffed, but she did not protest when Hordak gathered her up in his arms. She wrapped more of her hair around him, and Imp settled sleepily in the resulting nest. Entrapta could already feel herself drifting.
“You will be a shining star tomorrow,” Hordak promised, as he carried his family back to rest.
“Tomorrow,” echoed Imp.
*
The next day saw the Crypto Castle’s largest meeting room filled with princesses, dignitaries, and other honorary Alliance members. While Scorpia and Perfuma admired the tiny refreshments laid out for everyone, Mermista split her time between groaning at Sea Hawk’s boasts and trying every available chair to find the most comfortable one. Glimmer and Bow stepped uneasily around the edges of the room, watching carefully for anything that might be a trap, and Frosta followed their lead. Netossa and Spinnerella tried their best to find a chair Swift Wind could sit in.
Adora and Catra, wearing increasingly baffled expressions, were conversing with two domestic-looking robots who sat at the head of the table next to Entrapta. One was tall and skinny, and the other wore a welded-on handlebar mustache.
“Entrapta has parents?” Catra was asking, her face a galaxy of disbelief.
“Adopted, technically. Or adapted,” the skinnier bot explained. “We’re Entrapta’s parental units. She built us when she was six. You must have seen the painting in the foyer.”
“Yeah, we’ve been here pretty much the whole time,” the mustachioed model added. “You kids sure made a racket during your last few visits. What was that all about?”
“Uh,” Adora faltered.
To her immense relief, Hordak swept into the room at that very moment, flanked by Imp, Emily, and the reprogrammed Horde drone Entrapta had dubbed ‘Skeletor.’
“Welcome, everyone,” Hordak boomed, bringing the gathering to a respectful hush.
“Witless fools! I’m in charge now! And if you know what’s good for you you’ll do as I say!” Skeletor shouted.
Hordak scowled and shooed the fussing robot away from the table. “Pay no mind to that one,” he grumbled once he’d regained the floor. “Now then. Please allow me the honor of introducing the unparalleled mind who has made this operation possible, Princess Entrapta.”
“Thank you all for coming!” Entrapta started, while everyone took their seats. “I know you’re all excited about what we’re planning, but there’s still a lot of preparation to do before we can take off. As the chief science officers for this mission, it’s vital that Hordak and I gather as much data on your abilities as possible! Interdimensional travel is severely unpredictable and —”
“Hold on,” Mermista interrupted. “Exactly how high are the chances of us getting mutated by cosmic space energy or whatever? Because I only want cool mutations, not gross ones.”
“Maybe thirty, thirty-five percent?” Entrapta guessed. She shrugged. “A lot of this is theoretical. You guys will be like my guinea pigs! By which I mean the small robotic animals in the castle I protect and care for. And experiment on, sometimes.”
She laughed heartily. Glimmer and Bow shared a nervous glance. Perfuma turned slightly green.
Entrapta regained her composure and pointed back to the display board. “Ahem. Anyway, the good news is we already know some things about where we’re going! Probably.” She shuffled her notes, gaining confidence as she spoke.
“Before Adora found the Sword of Protection, historians debated ancient records of She-Ra. Some claimed she was called ‘Her-Ra’ and fought for the ‘Power of Grayskull.’ But I theorize that what those archaeologists actually uncovered was evidence of —”
“I have a question!” Frosta yelled. “Will there be hunky guys in the other dimension? I’m asking for a friend.”
“It’s funny you mention that, actually,” Entrapta replied. “Listen, just let me finish and…”
Unfortunately, anxious impatience had already gripped the assembled Alliance members. They clamored with questions, all talking at the same time. Entrapta shrank back in her seat and pulled her welding mask down, seeming to reach for something under the table.
Hordak stood up. Just as it looked like he was about to do something violent, a loud alarm sounded and the lights in the room flashed red.
“Uh-oh.” Entrapta glanced around at the assembled company. “Um, get ready to tuck and roll everybody!”
“Get ready to what?” Mermista cried out, but it was already too late. Multiple trap doors swung open across the meeting room floor, and with flailing limbs and startled shouts the guests were sent tumbling down chutes in every direction. In moments they had all vanished.
“I always feel so much better after doing something bad!” Skeletor cackled. “Now we begin phase two!”
*
Adora and Catra, who had clung to each other as they fell, landed with a bump in a darkened, underground space. As soon as they arrived, bright lights flickered to life and a huge screen lit up against the wall.
Entrapta’s face appeared on the monitor, larger than life. “Oh good! You’re alive,” she chirped when she saw the other two.
Adora clambered to her feet. “Entrapta! What’s going on?”
The scientist glanced away. “Well, I guess Skeletor didn’t like that we were ignoring him. So he stole my map of the castle and activated the security systems! Which means we’re all lost in the labyrinth until I can catch him. Isn’t that great?”
“It’s something,” Catra groaned, rubbing her head.
“Exactly! Now, without my map I can’t come find you. But if you can make it through the traps, the hallway you’re in should take you back to the meeting room. Then you’ll be safe until I can fix things!”
The screen dimmed again before Catra or Adora could protest. Left with few other options, they turned to get a good look at whatever dangers lay ahead.
They were standing at one end of a long corridor. Square blocks floated along its length, suspended in midair with anti-gravitational tech. An interrogative punctuation mark flashed on one, while a squat robot with painted-on angry eyebrows shambled slowly back and forth beneath it.
Catra took it all in. “You have got to be kidding.”
Adora had already drawn her sword and begun to venture forward. Catra was about to follow her, when something made her ears flick. A suspicious frown crossed her face.
“Hey, Adora!” Catra called. “Listen!”
“What?”
Catra pressed her ear to the wall. “There! Do you hear that?”
“Obviously not,” Adora huffed. “Now stop dawdling, the first puzzle looks pretty easy.”
Catra stayed where she was. “Hold on a second. This part of the castle feels familiar. I remember walking through here back when, uh, back when it was still Horde territory.” She coughed awkwardly, and then reached up to tilt the frame of a big-eyed kitten painting. “Look!”
Something clicked and the wall slid open, revealing a new passageway. Distinctive laughter could be heard coming from the other end of it. A purple neon sign reading “Secret Entrance!!!” buzzed to life.
Adora sighed and rolled her eyes.
“One time Entrapta had me and Scorpia over for a life-size Snakemen and Ladders game that got a little out of hand,” Catra explained as they entered the tunnel. At the far end there was a brightly lit office; inside, it was filled with laboratory equipment, video monitors, and a humble but dignified desk.
Hordak was sitting at the desk, in what appeared to be a smaller version of his old Fright Zone throne. It swiveled. Entrapta was sitting on the desk, and she waved as the other couple entered.
“Myaah! Sleep gas and stun-rays only, my evil minions!” muttered Skeletor, who was busy working the video monitors. On closer inspection, Adora realized that each of them showed some of the other princesses as they traversed the castle labyrinth.
“Welcome to mission control!” Entrapta sang, spreading her arms wide. “Hordak didn’t think you’d find us, but I had a hypothesis you might.”
“It was a ruse!” Adora gasped, scandalized. “You’re not lost at all!”
“You really need to hang out with Entrapta more if that still surprises you,” Catra observed. She looked at the monitors. “Ah, are they gonna be okay?”
“Better than!” Entrapta sprang off the desk, hanging by her hair as she showed off multiple datapads. “Everyone was getting a little… distracted upstairs, so I just decided to speed things up a teensy bit! The princesses using their powers to escape the maze will let me get all the readings we need, and then we can have a nice little party! I had the baker make tiny cakes.”
“I made sure Hordak’s doomberry pie was especially tasty!” Skeletor piped up.
“And it’s all perfectly safe!” Entrapta promised. Discreetly, a ribbon of hair reached out to push a blinking button. On the monitors, Mermista and Sea Hawk were rescued from a robot shark attack by a convenient change of the currents.
“This is hilarious,” Catra laughed, looking more closely. On one of the screens, Swift Wind was gleefully running loop-de-loops along a curving racetrack. “I think they’re actually having fun in there. Can we stay and watch?”
“I’m afraid not,” Hordak said. She-Ra’s — and your — assessment is the most important of all. But we’d love to have you over to the castle for dinner soon. Shall we say eight o’clock next week?”
“That sounds nice!” Adora chimed, before Catra could stop her.
“Splendid. I’ll cook,” Hordak concluded. Then he pressed a button on his desk, and a trapdoor sent the younger women plummeting through the floor.
Catra and Adora yelped in surprise, only for their fall to be cut short by an enormous pile of pillows on the level below. They struggled to their feet. Another corridor stretched away in front of them, filled with further challenges. Floating gold coins, each about four feet tall, indicated a pathway.
“Try not to have too much fun,” Hordak called good-naturedly as the trapdoor slid shut.
“Use the warp zone! It’s faster!” Entrapta added.
“Have a nice trip down!” said Skeletor.
*
Hordak settled back in his chair (it had soft armrests, and a cushion for lumbar support) and watched his partner at work. Entrapta flitted from screen to screen, taking notes and making adjustments. On one display, Bow and Glimmer had met up with Netossa and Spinnerella while navigating a cage minefield. On another, Frosta was making an ice bridge to help Perfuma and Scorpia cross a slow-moving spike trap.
“I’m sorry you had to use your backup plan. They really are utter fools if they ever doubted your genius,” Hordak mused.
“Different people have different strengths and weaknesses,” Entrapta replied, without looking up from her work. “And a good scientist collaborates whenever they can! Even if that requires a little creativity sometimes.”
Hordak nodded. “Fair enough. Nevertheless, I would not blame you if you wished to have nothing more to do with the Princess Alliance. Even their attempts to help you can seem… insensitive. You’re not obligated to forgive that.”
Skeletor looked up from his control panel and shook a fist. “Don’t you get awfully tired of being a hero all the time? Don’t you ever feel like doing something evil?”
“They’re trying to be good friends,” Entrapta defended. “And so am I. And if I really did need their help, maybe things would be different. But I’ve got it all under control!”
She vaulted across the room, flipping switches and turning dials along the way. On the monitors, Perfuma’s fall from a tall platform was gently broken by a sudden anti-gravitational field.
“Besides, forgiveness isn’t always about the person being forgiven. It’s also about taking back potential energy that was lost.”
“Did you learn that in my brother’s therapy group?” Hordak asked.
Entrapta smirked. “Actually, he got it from me.”
A pleasant ding sounded and Entrapta clapped her hair. “Hooray, everyone made it back! I’ll calculate the high scores and then we can continue the social experiment!”
“You astonish me every day,” Hordak purred as he rose to follow her. Entrapta put out her hand, and he took it.
“Wait for me!” Skeletor cried out. “You might get lost by yourself!”
*
One week later, a much smaller gathering of royals met in Dryl.
Catra and Adora sat together in one of the Crypto Castle’s least intimidating dining rooms, listening with barely-contained delight as Entrapta’s parental units thoroughly embarrassed their former boss.
“...And so I said to him, ‘I have charging ports Hordak, can you download raw data offa me?’ Ha! Oh, you shoulda seen his face!”
Hordak slouched in his chair. “I do not think we need to bore our guests with the details of this particular story,” he protested, feebly.
“Oh, I’m not bored at all! I want to hear everything,” Catra said. She leaned forward, grinning. “So, was this before or after you hooked him up to the lie detector?”
Entrapta giggled, and gave Hordak a gentle pat on the shoulder as she reached for another helping of his tiny quiche. All things considered, the night was going surprisingly well.
It was exactly what Entrapta wanted.
After dinner, wheeled bots carted away the leftovers and dirty dishes. Hordak poured coffee for himself and Adora, and the parental units retired to wherever it was they lived in the cavernous castle. Entrapta, lost in thought as usual, felt a familiar feline presence approach her.
“Thank you,” Catra said, sincerely. “Not just for this. For everything. For being so nice all the time. For making this mission happen. It means a lot to me.”
Entrapta smiled softly. “To me, too. Everyone makes mistakes. It would be a shame not to learn from them when we can.”
“Did you say something?” Skeletor squawked, suddenly materializing in the doorway.
Entrapta, unbothered, immediately produced a datapad. “Oh we’re just talking about the big rescue mission! Actually, you should probably take a look at my data, Skeletor. I haven’t told you much yet, and we might need you!” She held the blinking screen out happily.
Skeletor looked at the datapad. At first he seemed confused; then he boggled as he registered the information in front of him. “Eternia?” he gasped in disbelief. “Grayskull?”
His voice rose to a fevered pitch. “He-Man!”
For once, Skeletor had no words. He shrieked incomprehensibly instead, fists shaking.
Hordak chuckled. “It’ll be just like the old days!”
Skeletor screamed.

Sneak Peek at “The Last Hero of Eternia” Chapter 5
I’ve still got a bit of work to do on Chapter 5, but I wanted to share a sneak peak with you all. Hope you enjoy!
~~~~~
“Hey, Catra,” Entrapta said. “Mind going to the engine room and helping Hordak? He hasn’t been feeling too well after the attack. I think he could really use some help, but I’m too busy here.”
Catra stared at her for a moment. Help Hordak? She’d been avoiding him for the past several months. Things hadn’t ended well between them, before Horde Prime’s arrival.
“Catra?” Entrapta said.
“Uh, sure,” Catra said. “Yeah.” She glanced one more time at Adora, who had again taken to staring off to space, and then left the cockpit.
The walk through the corridor was quiet. The thrumming of the engine grew more pronounced as she continued aft. The floor, while still smooth, metallic, and cool under her soles, vibrated more significantly as she continued on. Near the engine room she crossed the smaller room, to her right, where she’d stayed the first time she’d been on this ship. After Adora and the others had rescued her from Horde Prime. It was that room where she had started, finally, to heal. It was that room where, for the first time in years, she and Adora had spent the night together, sleeping in the same bed.
Despite all the anger she’d felt, how betrayed she’d felt for so long over Adora abandoning their home, abandoning her - it was the first time in years she had actually felt some contentment.
When she refitted the ship, Entrapta had repurposed the room into equipment and tooling storage, and opened the wall between it and the engine room next door. She’d been a bit disappointed to find that out, even though a much more comfortable, if much cozier, room had been built for her and Adora to share, partitioned from the large dormitory located closer to the fore of the ship.
She continued past the room, and the memories it contained, to the engine room. The door opened, and inside she could see Hordak sitting at a control panel. It was a very unusual sight for her. She had never before seen Hordak sitting when he worked. Only when he had been on his throne. His back was to her.
“Um, hi,” she said. He did not look up. “Uh, Entrapta says you need some help?”
He stopped what he was doing and turned his head slightly to the side. She couldn’t see his eyes.
“The second fusible link in the thrust matrix has failed and needs replaced.”
“O - okay,” she said. “And...um...where-?”
“Other end of the room, on the wall. Three cylinders. One of them isn’t glowing. Twist it to remove it, and get a replacement from the storage room.”
“Yeah, okay, on it.”  She headed to the far end of the room, and just as he’d described, there were three cylinders, the diameter and length of each about the same as her torso, with metal caps on the end and a transparent glass-like material in the center. The two on the outside were glowing yellow, but the one in the middle was blinking, as if it were attempting to illuminate but failing.
She reached up, took hold of it with both hands, and attempted to twist it to the right. It wouldn’t budge. She tried a little harder, her hands squeaking against the transparent material, but it didn’t move.
“Other direction,” came Hordak’s voice, a growl that projected over the deep thrumming of the ship’s engine.
Right, she thought, rolling her eyes. You seem waaaay too busy to do this yourself. She took hold of it again and tried twisting it to the left. At first it didn’t move, but then she felt something click. It then turned easily - and almost immediately slipped out of its mounting. She caught it before it could fall, surprise at just how heavy it was. “G-got it,” she said. She set it gently down on the floor, wedging it next to some pipes so it wouldn’t roll away. She walked back toward Hordak. “And, um, where’s-?”
“That way,” Hordak said, pointing at the wall just past where he was seated.
“Yeah.” She walked past him, opened the door to the storage room, and remembered that this was the room she’d been reminiscing about just a few minutes ago. It smelled differently than she remembered - like chemicals, and metal. None of the scent of her or Adora remained, not that it was surprising.
“Fusible link,” she muttered. “Where would Entrapta hide you?”
Of course, nothing was labeled. She assumed Entrapta had some kind of system of organization that made sense to her, much like her castle at Dryl, where to anyone else it was practically indecipherable.
It took her a good twenty minutes before she finally opened the correct cabinet and found two of the cylinders, standing upright, on an upper shelf. Of course. She looked around for something to stand on, found a white, metallic cube, and pushed it in front of the cabinet. She stood on it, reached up and grabbed one of the two cylinders, pulled the cylinder to her chest, and hugged it tightly as she could while she tried to step back down without breaking an ankle or her neck.
Back in the Engineering room she crossed behind a still-sitting and still-ignoring-her Hordak, made her way to the far end of the room, and gingerly set the cylinder in place of the old one. She had to twist and wiggle it several times until she found the proper orientation for it to slide into place. She twisted it to the right, and after a quarter-turn felt it click into place. It immediately lit up yellow, matching the two cylinders to either side almost perfectly.
“That’s done,” Catra said, rubbing her hands together as she returned to Hordak.
He did not look at her when he spoke. “Are you simply going to leave the failed cylinder on the floor like so much garbage?”
“I - guess not?” Catra said. “Uh, where-?”
“Reclamation room,” Hordak said. “Other side of the corridor.”
She grimaced at the creature whom she had once served, and twice betrayed, before heading back to retrieve the dead cylinder. As she carried it out of the room she wondered why Hordak couldn’t be bothered to do this physical work. He had his exo suit, which she knew gave him incredible physical strength. Or was he just intentionally being an ass?
Not that she could blame him for that, of course, but it didn’t mean she had to like it.
The room that was apparently the “Reclamation room” was mostly empty, with just a few containers holding what looked like broken components, stripped bolts, and at least one small pile of tiny food wrappers. She hauled the cylinder to the corner, laid it down, and left the room.
She started heading back to the engine room but stopped. Hordak was already on her nerves. She hadn’t been a fan of him joining them on their “road trip”, and even though that wasn’t what this was, it had so far proven to be every bit as awkward as she’d expected it to be.
She shook her head and sighed. “Be the bigger person,” her therapist had said. “It can be hard, sometimes feeling like the hardest thing you’ve ever done, but it will be worth it in the end.”
Then, of course, she remembered something else. She’d made a goal to herself to make amends with everyone she’d hurt. And while Hordak had done plenty of hurting to her, she had also hurt him. If she was serious about healing, about being a better person, she needed to do it completely.
Sighing, she opened the engine room door and walked up to Hordak.
“I have nothing else for you to do,” Hordak said, still not looking away from the holographic display in front of him. After a hesitation, “Thank you...for replacing the fusible link.”
“Yeah, no problem,” Catra said. She hovered there a moment, took a deep breath, and said, “Listen, Hordak…”
“I am far too busy to ‘chat’,” he said. “Yeah, I get that, but...I just gotta say something, then I’ll leave you alone. I - I’m sorry. For...a lot of things. For betraying you. For...what I did to Entrapta. For lying to you. I was-”
“I don’t need your apologies,” Hordak interrupted. He turned toward her, giving her what she could best describe as a sidelong glance with one of his red, glowing, pupil-less eyes. “Nor have I any desire for them. What’s done is done, and dwelling on it is pointless.”
That statement gave her a little hope...that is, until the next one dashed it.
“You proved to be disloyal, disrespectful, and an opportunist with no regard for your duties or your obligations. You lusted for power - my power, and then Horde Prime’s power, and only by the grace of your…friends’... actions were you protected from the consequences of that.”
His chair turned so he was facing her fully. “I tolerate your presence for Entrapta’s sake. For the sake of She-Ra, who saved my life when she could simply have obliterated me when she obliterated Horde Prime. But do not mistake my tolerance for acceptance. Or forgiveness.” He turned back to his display. “Now leave me be.”
Catra stood there for a moment, trying to process what had just happened. Of course, she’d known this could be a possibility. Her therapist had warned her it could be a possibility. But now, having just lived through it, after having put so much work into getting better, into being better…
She turned on a heel and left the engine room without a word. Her feet slapped a steady beat on the deck as she practically marched toward the front of the ship. When she reached the door to her and Adora’s cabin, though, she stopped. She turned to stare at it. The door was blank, with no markings, just like every other door on the ship. When they’d first talked about taking this ship on their “road trip”, she’d imagined herself scratching caricatures of herself and Adora into it, much like those she’d scratched into their old bunk back when they were cadets in the Horde. A caricature she’d destroyed out of anger when Adora first abandoned the Horde...abandoned Catra…
Part of her had hoped they would find it somewhere in the rubble of the old Horde headquarters when she and Adora had been leading the cleanup there. Unsurprisingly, it was either long gone, or someone else had scooped it up with all the rest of the debris and sent it to be recycled.
Whatever happened to that, she had Adora again. For the moment, though, that just didn’t give her the comfort she wanted it to. She opened the door and stood before the bed inside as the door hissed shut behind her. The room was spartan; only a bed and the trunk they’d hastily packed were there. The blank wall opposite the door could be made transparent so they could see outside the ship, but now it was solid, smooth, dreary gray.
They would have probably taken more time to decorate the room before they went on their actual “road trip”. Decorated with what, she wasn’t sure, but anything would be better than the drab gray, featureless walls that right now echoed what she was feeling inside.
She sat down on the bed, legs curled up to her chest. She buried her face in her knees and, after all the hardships of the past few days, finally let herself break down and cry.
Mermista x Reader
Summary: You go with the group to find Peekablue, it doesn’t go as expected and now you have to fight your infected girlfriend.
Warnings:N/A
Tumblr media
"Really Double Trouble? Where is Peekablue? You know what it doesn't even matter. How many people out there are chipped?" Double Trouble crosses their legs and taps their chin for a second. "All of them." You, Scorpia, Sea Hawk, and Perfuma freeze for a minute. "Everyone!?" Before any of you can say anything else, the glass around you starts to crack. "What the--- Mermista? What are you doing?" You all look over to Mermista to see that her eyes are green and her pupils were white, "Prime sees all, Prime knows all." She says with a mix of her voice and Horde Prime's. "We gotta go!"
*Time Skip*
"Adora!" You yell as you wrap your arms around your younger sister. "I'm so glad you're okay." You say pulling back a little to give her a check over before going back to hug her. You look over Adora's shoulder to see Glimmer and Bow getting greeted by what was left of the rebellion. You then notice Catra standing off to the side awkwardly. You pull back from your hug and slowly walk over to Catra. Adora and the rest of your friends hold their breathe, knowing how protective you were of Adora even when she could turn into She-ra. Honestly, Catra looks like a deer caught in headlights, she is so sure she is about to get hit that she flinches when you raise your hand. Instead however, she feels you place your hand on her shoulder and pull her into a tight hug. Catra tenses for a moment, thinking this is a trick, before finally relaxing and hugging you back. "I'm glad your on the right side now but break Adora's heart one more time and the Horde won't be your only problem. Got it?" Catra nods her head fast, you use to beat her ass in horde training and she's sure you could still do it now.
You give Catra one more squeeze before letting go and turning around. "Now lets brainstorm how to beat the Horde and free our friends and my girlfriend." "Girlfriend!?" Adora says in complete shock. "Oh yeah, I forgot you weren't here for that." Perfuma instantly bounces over to Adora to explain everything that happened with you while she was gone. You were happy that Perfuma was smiling and happy again, even if it was for a moment.
*Time Skip*
"C'mon Mermista, I really don't want to hurt you!" You yell as you dodge Mermista's water. "Come on Bow what is taking so long!?" You mumble under your breathe as you dodge Mermista and take out Horde soldiers. "I hope Adora is alri---" As your thinking, you don't notice a stream of water that Mermista sent at you. You slam against the wall, hitting your head, and feel a little dizzy. "Wha---" You shake your head, getting your bearings, before lifting your head to see a wave of water coming at you. You cover your face expecting to get hit, but when you don't you look up to see the water fall to the ground along with Mermista. "Mermista!" You yell struggling to move, just now realizing you can't feel your legs. Luckily Mermista gets up a few minutes later and runs over to you. "Oh my spirits, I'm so sorry Y/n!" You just shake your head and let a few tears slip, happy that Mermista was back, and pull her into a passionate kiss. "It's okay but I can't fight anymore, I can't feel my legs." Mermista looks at you in shock before looking around and grabs a horde laser gun. "Here use this if anyone gets to close to you." Mermista says before running into battle.
After sitting and firing for a while, you notice that all your friends are frozen. "What the hell?" Then you get to watch a pretty cool battle between Glimmer and her dad. "Wow, Sparkles definitely got some practice in while in space." Luckily, Glimmer wins and all your friends are free. Mermista instantly runs over to you and pulls you into a hug. "Now it's all up to Adora." Mermista says before she turns back and gets into a fighting position against the remaining Horde soldiers. (Sorry this part was kinda bad, I just suck at writing fight scenes and wanted to get all that out the way.)
After a few more minutes of firing lasers and Mermista throwing water the ground starts to shake. "What the---" You start to say as the ground breaks open and fire starts shooting out of it. "Woah!" You yell as one gets a little too close and Mermista has to pull you back. "I can't dodge these. If it gets to close I need you to get away." Mermista turns to look at you like your crazy. "If it gets to close I'm taking you with me. End of discussion." You go to respond when Mermista send you a glare that instantly shuts you up. You both watch as the planet seems to crack open and shoot fire out everywhere and slowly get closer to the two of you. "If this is it, I just want you to know that I love you." You say looking up at Mermista, who is crouched down beside you with one arm around your shoulder. "Don't talk like that... We'll be fine, you know Adora always like to be fashionably late." Mermista says, looking around to see if there is anywhere to go. You reach up and put a hand on Mermista's cheek, making her look down at you. "I love you." You say as you pull her into a kiss. Mermista returns it, ignoring how she's getting hotter and hotter each second. "I love you too." She says giving you a smile before looking back out into the fire.
Right as its about to hit you, it all suddenly stop. "I told you Adora is always fashionably late." "I swear that's a princess thing." You mumble back as you watch the ground close back together and a white light shoot out from in front of the spire, turning the Horde ship into a tree. "Woah... that's my sister." You say as you watch the ground suddenly get covered in thick green grass with flower here and there. You and Mermista stay where you are as you watch everyone run up to Adora in celebration. From your spot, you see her and Catra holding hands and smirk. "You owe me $20, I won the bet." Mermista looks at you confused before turning to see what you saw. "Damn it." Mermista says causing you to laugh. "I told you, I know my sister well."
You sit with Mermista for a few more minutes until you hear and see Adora sprinting over to you. "Y/n? Y/n!? What's wrong? What happened?" Adora says and she kneels down next to you. "This one," You gesture at Mermista, "Hit me when she was infected and sent me straight into the wall. I haven't been able to feel or move my legs since." Adora looks worried and attempts to heal you... Nothing happens. "What? C'mon..." Adora says as she tries and tries again. "Adora stop! You'll just tire yourself out. If this is what I have to deal with now, it'll be fine. I can just get Entrapta to make me something." Adora gives you and Mermista concerned look. "Don't worry blondie, I'll be with your sister every step of the way."
