YOU hate booktok books because you can’t conceptualize what a fantasy is and think these readers need therapy and professional help for enjoying dark topics in explicit material even though it takes exactly .2 seconds to understand the difference between something that is interesting and exciting in fiction and something that would be deeply unpleasant in real life. I hate booktok books because they all feel like overhyped copy and pastes of one another, the amount of bigotry that goes unchecked in these stories is astounding, and I also get tired of this attitude that if something isn’t 🔥spicy🔥 it’s boring and not worth reading. We are not the same.

#I am a hater through and through and mostly through the booktube community #I LOVE hearing slander on booktok books and authors #but people are forever like. appalled and horrified and disgusted that. adult women have fantasies #like bro I think this book is shit too. I don’t think the 34 year old office worker reading this wants an ACTUAL man to act like that #but fictional fantasies are fine because it’s not actually going to harm her #I specify women because I see this kind of thing most used against women reading these books #like people act like they’re stupid and brainless and saying they WANT to be abused #do you. do you know what a fantasy is #or a common one I hear is #‘what if a CHILD read this??? this would seriously damage a young girl!!!!!’#and the book in question is full of hardcore smut between grown adults by a grown adult for grown adults #like I was a teenager once I know we read shit we shouldn’t have #but as an adult author it is not my job to monitor other people’s children #and to be clear on that last point I don’t think there is anything wrong with reading purely for entertainment and enjoyment #and if you need smut in your fiction to enjoy it that’s fine #but I hate that it has to be a selling point in everything #I don’t care about these characters enough I’m not reading any smut of them #I read one (1) extreme horror book that had been hyped up by booktok people #it was okay.#there were some things in it I liked #some things I didn’t #but people were making it out to be the most disturbing and gruesome thing ever #and while I would by no means suggest it to anybody who isn’t comfortable with the subject matter #as someone who expected horrible and gruesome it was just. okay #it felt like a case of people being extra shocked and appalled #because they forget that main character does not equal Good Guy #so I didn’t find his actions particularly shocking. I just thought he sucked akdjahdkdk

Simon “Ghost” Riley x Male! Reader with a tongue piercing

Tw: Mention of swearing, sexual suggestions, and a slight age-gap. Will probably have bad grammar.

Reader is 28, while Simon is 34 (they met when they were adults.) This is a little self-indulgent due to the fact I have my tongue pierced

Third POV:

Times like this is when Simon questioned if he was as perceptive as he thought he was. He had seen m/n’s mouth more times than he has probably seen his own in a mirror, open and closed (more so, open). More than that, he seen his tongue more times than he can count.

M/n had his tongue pierced. He hadn’t wore the jewelry most of the time that he’s known Simon, so it wasn’t much a surprise that Simon didn’t notice the tiny hole in the middle of his tongue. In fact, it wasn’t until right now Simon had found the small box full of tongue rings, varying from sweet and basic ones to ones with sexual words and pictures on them. Simon was going through the box he found in his side of the closet, not expecting what he’d find. “Hey, M/n!!” He yelled as he turned and started to walk out the room and down the stairs to the living room.

“Yes?” The male sitting on the couch said as he turned his head not yet noticing the small box in his husband’s hand. “What is this?” Simon said with a raised brow and his hand raised to show off said box. “Oh.” “Oh?” Simon repeated in response, “uh.. those are tongue rings” M/n said as he started to get off the couch and walk to his husband, “I know that, why do you have them? Are you thinking of getting one?” Silence spread through the room they were in “Simon.. I already have one.” His husband said as he plucked the box out of his hand. “What.” Simon repeated in a flat tone that still managed to harbor confusion and shock.

M/n stuck his tongue out, and pointed to the very small almost unnoticeable hole in his tongue, it’s been so long he didn’t even know if it was still there and open to accept any jewelry. Simon stared at his tongue with a blank face, to anyone else they’d think he was upset, but his husband? He knew what he felt. The look in his eyes said everything for him. He was in the middle of a fantasy, no doubt about m/n and the tongue ring. What would the piercing feel like against his co- “Simon!” Simon snapped his head up looking m/n in his eyes, “hm?” “What’s up with you?” He could hear the tease in his voice, the smug look on his face said it too.

“Just.. wondering when you got it.” Simon said lowering his head and avoiding eye contact. This was something he did often when he was caught in his own world imagining things about his husband. “Oh, uhh.. I think I got it when I turned 16.” M/n said as he looked at the box trying to remember why and when he got it. “I had wanted one since I was 14 and when I got the okay from my parents I went for it.” He said with a slight shrug looking back at Simon who was now staring at him. “Can you, try to put one in?” Simon said with a low voice, before clearing his throat trying to act like he was innocent here. “I can try, can’t promise anything though. I haven’t worn anything in my tongue since our wedding.” “WEDDING??” Simon yelled, not out of anger but surprise. You two had dated since you were 21 and he was 27. Getting married at 24 and 30, how had he never noticed you had one? “Oh yeah, I wore it off and on when we dated, more so when you were deployed.” Simon didn’t know what to think, you hid it for that long.

Second POV:

You walked past him and into the bathroom downstairs as he followed close behind you, sitting on the countertop and pulling a simple neon green ball out, screwing it undone and trying to push it through the bottom on your tongue. There was resistance as expected, you pulled it oit if your mouth. “Shit that did not feel good.” You swore, brows furrowed in a pained expression. “You don’t have to push yourself. It’s okay if you can’t get it through.” Simon spoke as he put a hand on your back. “No I can, it’s not that bad, it was just that little spot that pinched.” You spoke with a determined voice, opening your mouth again and finally pushing it all the way through.

Screwing the ball back on and pulling your tongue back in your mouth before sticking it out again, revealing the green jewelry that glowed against the pink of your tongue. “There” you said, you had gotten used to speaking with it before, but now it’s a little weird, the weight back in your tongue pulled and made you speak weird. Simon stared for what felt like minutes when it was only a few seconds before speaking “I want you to suck me off with that.” He said looking in your eyes through the mirror. “Huh?” You said turning your head to look at him properly, “I want you.. to put my dic-” you shoved your hands over his mouth before he could finish. “I got it.. yeah I can do that when I get used to it” your face was flushed and head lowered to look at the floor, you had always been a little shy when it came to sex talk with Simon, or anyone for that matter.

“Perfect.” Simon said as he pulled the man into a hug with a small smile on his face, he really couldn’t wait.

Not father & son, not master & disciple, but a secret third thing

First of all, let me preface this by being clear that everyone is free to headcanon anything they want and like/dislike anything they like/dislike! That being said, sometimes I see international fans interpret FDB as LLH's son, or their dynamic as parent-child or otherwise familial, and as a native chinese speaker, I just wanted to share some reasons why I personally did not interpret them as familial.

Granted, at the start of the show, FDB is kept in the dark and also not up to LLH's level of skill in solving cases. However, FDB quickly catches up in crime-solving skills, intellect and maturity by the 2nd half of the show, after a well-written growth arc. I think the beauty of the characters and relationships in this show is that they grow & evolve, and are meant to do so. The dynamic that LLH & FDB had in episode 1 is quite different from their dynamic at the end of the show. By the later episodes, they are 2 adults who are very much equals.

Why I don't read them as father & son:

LLH & FDB act and speak in a manner that is far too informal & familiar with one another, which would be extremely inappropriate for any kind of parent & child, even a surrogate one. Several times, FDB calls LLH by just his first name "Lianhua", and sometimes even calls him "Damn Lianhua" when he is angry/upset at LLH. This would be extremely rude for a disciple to call a master, or a son to call a father. No son talks to his father the way FDB talks to LLH, and no disciple talks to their master like that. Unless the son/disciple hates the father/master, and is outright rejecting his father/master altogether. As we see in the show, not only does FDB not hate LLH at all, he instead cares deeply for LLH and would do anything to save him. Why, then would someone scold/curse someone they care about? Does the trope of the upset spouse/partner sound familiar?

For comparison, see FDB's interactions with He Xiaohui, who he is close to - he is informal & affectionate with her, but never calls her anything other than "娘 niang" ("mother"). I can't emphasize enough how taboo it is in Chinese culture to ever call your parent or parental figure by their name under any circumstance.

2. In ep 31, FDB himself explicitly rejects the idea of LLH as his shifu and himself as LLH's disciple, responding that he is too old to be LLH's disciple and it was merely a joke. He clearly sees LLH as an equal, and rejects the notion of their relationship being anything other than that of 2 adult equals. LLH also tells his shiniang that FDB is not his disciple, and a few episodes ago LLH told FDB that he has never understimated FDB.

Coding/hints as something other than platonic:

Zhiji/zhijiao - FDB calls LLH his 知交 zhijiao in ep 19, and 知己 zhiji in ep 34. "In this life, I, Fang Duobing, recognize you as my only zhiji." is practically a love declaration. And this bond is reciprocated by LLH, bc in a deleted line in ep 19, translated by forayuarchive on twitter, LLH is the one who first calls FDB his zhijiao.

To clarify, Zhiji is not specifically a romantic term, but it's what was used in both The Untamed and Word of Honor - both dramas based on danmei novels with canon gay main pairings - to bypass censorship, to code the bond between the main duo as deeper than your typical platonic male friendship. (See this post for a detailed explanation of the significance/history behind the term zhiji, and see this twitter thread for an explanation of the meaning of zhijiao in MLC - especially how zhijiao is specifically mutual, reciprocated).

2. Married bickering - forayuarchive on twitter has discussed in these twitter threads how the tone of many of LLH & FDB's interactions (especially FDB) is similar to how married couples or romantic partners speak to one another bc of the level of familiarity, tone and language. For my fav example, see this note (translation by forayuarchive) that FDB left LLH in ep 35, which reads pretty much like a note that a spouse/partner might write when leaving their shared house in a hurry.

3. "Xiaobao" - Personally as a native Chinese speaker, LLH calling FDB "xiaobao" in front of everyone is a level of intimacy that genuinely would make me feel embarrassed to hear as a third party. 小宝 xiao bao (literal meaning = "little treasure") is usually something you call actual babies/children AND is FDB's family nickname for him, so if you're calling a grown man that in front of everyone including his colleagues, family and even strangers, then one might assume he is likely either your biological family or your romantic partner. (For comparison, just imagine calling your s/o their parent's special childhood nickname for them at work.)

4. Deleted lines where FDB calls LLH "xiaohua'er". 小花儿 Xiaohua'er ("little flower") is very intimate and feels like something someone might call a lover. Or, at least, definitely not a platonic shifu, even less so a parental figure. (For meta on the names that LLH & FDB use for one another, see forayuarchive's twitter thread.)

5. More deleted scenes (translated by forayuarchive on twitter), perhaps cut due to censorship, which make apparent LLH's high regard and deep care for FDB. For e.g., a line of internal monologue by LLH in ep 40, translated here by forhenjun, shows that LLH thinks of FDB as the only person in his two lifetimes who has always treated him as a human being rather than putting him on an unfair pedestal.

6. Official MLC accounts act like as if they ship them.

As murderedbyhomework mentioned, there is a song in the official soundtrack of MLC called "Fanghua's Day-to-Day Life" (yes, the exact same words as their ship name). Sounds like a couple's daily domestic life, doesn't it?

The official iQiYi Romance youtube channel lists clips of LLH & FDB under the romance category.

The official MLC douyin account posts MVs with emotional captions (e.g. this one translated here by forayuarchive) that emphasize how much both LLH and FDB mean to one another. Another official MLC douyin calls LLH & FDB the person each other trusts the most.

The MLC clips posted by the official Guangdong TV weibo account also has captions such as these (translated by rice_jpg) that straight up describe FDB's feelings towards LLH as "when you like someone" (very similar CN phrasing as the phrasing used to describe romantic crushes).

7. They are subtly paralleled with a canon straight romantic couple (see fanqxiaobao's twitter thread on the parallels btwn LXY/QWM scenes and certain LLH/FDB scenes). MLC also made a distinct change from the novel by not having FDB get married to Princess Zhaoling, even though the drama could have easily given FDB a romance with her.

8. If you're familiar with chinese romantic tropes or the danmei genre, LLH & FDB fit many common romantic tropes e.g. sharing a drink on the rooftop under the moonlight, forgotten first meeting in childhood (and then meeting again properly as adults), power couple fighting side by side (they even held hands!), nianxia, protective younger ml, sickly older mc - just to name a few. Danmei even has many stories of shizun/shifu & disciple pairings who fall in love as adult equals.

There's honestly lots more but these are just some off the top of my head. Again everyone is free to interpret anything! This is just me explaining why as a native chinese speaker I personally did not read their dynamic as that of a father and son.

"stories with sex aren't emotionally impactful" what the fuck was that person on??? Like I get it's not for everyone, but sex can be an extremely emotionally intimate act between two people, I don't see how anyone can just write it off. And even then, 'horny' is an entirely valid emotion!!

ohhh it was an absolute riot. I posted the first chapter, which, by the way, has absolutely no sex in it whatsoever, not even a hint of it, and this person just waltzes into my comments section like:

and so I initially thought 'huh may be ace? ok cool, but this is in fact an E rated fic that fully says there'll be smut so...idk what you're doing here if you don't like that???'

So we had this little exchange wherein they told me that stories without smut were more emotionally impactful than those with it:

They didn't say anything after that, and they didn't comment on it again.

Several other commenters informed me that there's a couple of people within this fandom who...literally go to an E rated fic and either trash it for having smut or imply you're writing immoral/impure things and then come back to good ol' tungle.hell and talk shit about the author. I can only assume they're very young, because a) what? go outside, and b) I'm 34. If I want to write a fic about two characters in their 40s falling in love and having sex, alongside a bunch of other things...I'm gonna do it because I'm a grown ass adult, I pay taxes, and your opinion literally doesn't matter.

As it stands, this fic made multiple people cry and experience many other emotions, which I know because they commented and told me, so that commenter can go chew on some barbed wire!

Hi! You may have answered this before, and if you have, I'm sorry for asking a question you have already asked.

Do you know the age range for Christine actresses? Like how old the oldest actress was when they played here. I know the youngest has been 18 and I know Kaley Ann Voorhees (I remember her specifically since she was the Christine when I saw it on Broadway) was one of those. (I'm excluding Emmy Rossum from this since I'm talking strictly stage show).

I'm curious because she's always been a dream role, but I think I might be reaching the age of being too old {25}. Even if I am, though, I'll be content with doing it in the privacy of my own home. Lol.

So first, I just kind of want to say that I'm really worried for the state of the industry if you and others start thinking that 25 is "too old" to play Christine. (This is what happens when you keep casting younger and younger, CamMack and co.!)

Now, as for your actual question: I think we should separate it into two related but still somewhat different categories: who are the youngest and oldest Christines ever (basically the minimum and maximum age ranges, good as little factoids of knowledge) and what is the general age range (probably more useful for someone actually looking to get the role).

To start with the first, a couple of corrections! The youngest Christines have actually been around 16-17 years old, and no, I'm not including Emmy Rossum in this: actresses like Katie Hall and Amy Nuttall were 16 when cast as understudies and 17 when they performed the role, while Kaja Mianowana, Paulina Janczak, and Marta Hadžimanov were 17 when cast as principals (though typically sharing the role with a somewhat older actress). Additionally, actresses like Olivia Safe, Sarah Bakker, Julie Goodwin, and Amy Hudson Holder, were 18 to 19 years old when cast as understudies or alternates. Kaley Ann Voorhees was actually 20 years old, not 18, when she was first cast in Phantom, making her comparatively older than some of the others on this list, though she was still the youngest actress to play Christine on Broadway.

Now as for the oldest, those would probably be Barbara Fonyo who was 50 when she ended her run, as well as Lisa Vroman, who was 47, and Jill Washington, who was 46, when they ended theirs.

However, the general age range of Christines, I'd say, is probably mid 20s to 30s, and you'll typically see that in casting calls where, if they specify an age range, will say something like "20-29" and what-not. I have said that it seems productions are casting younger, and honestly it seems like every new Christine is only in her 20s, but there have been several actresses cast in the show in their 30s even in the last decade or so: Valerie Link in Hamburg (34), Ali Ewoldt on Broadway (34), and Meghan Picerno in the World Tour and Broadway (maybe 34/35).

But ultimately, your actual age will matter less than what age you can play as (e.g. some people can play teenagers and young adults into their 30s and 40s) and, more importantly, your skills when it comes to singing, acting, and (to some extent) dancing. That should ultimately be the focus when trying to become Christine, not your age!

You are an adult. Even if you live with your parents. Even if you do part-time shift work at minimum wage. Even if you haven't graduated college. Even if you are single. These are adult things to do. Because you are doing them. And you are an adult. Start treating yourself like an adult. Fake it 'till you make it if you have to.

That trend on TikTok of 20-40 something women authors (and writers yet to be published) promoting their books like,

"Omg! I can't believe I've sold X number of copies!! I never thought I would!" "Ahhhh imagine publishing your book and all your dreams come true and now you get to meet famous authors and work with big names in the industry!!" "Would you read a book where [proceeds to list a bunch of oversaturated tropes that tell me nothing about the actual plot]?"

It reeks of infantilization. If you didn't believe anyone would want to read your book, why should I? You made it on the NYT bestseller list! Stop acting like a mega-fan who got to meet a celebrity. You are their peer! "Would you read a book--" What if I wouldn't? Why does it matter to you what I think of your book? And for the love of god stop hiding behind tropes you know are already popular. "Here is my book: This is what it is about." Have some goddamn confidence.

It is fine to mention in passing "this idea was really far-fetched so I didn't know if it would appeal" or "I was struggling with self-esteem when I wrote this". It's fine to fan a little bit. It's fine to discuss the tropes in your book. But why are you building your brand as an author off of your inferiority complex? You are using your poor self-esteem as a marketing tactic to seem "humble" and "relatable" but it's coming across as unprofessional and desperate for reassurance. You are an adult. You are competent. The more you act like it the more you will believe it.

And of course, I haven't seen a man promote his book this way...

On another note, do any of the 20-40 something women writers who do "write with me" videos on TikTok actually enjoy writing or are they just doing it for the aesthetic?

They all have gorgeous minimalism writing spaces full of white and pink and a macbook beneath a window. Their makeup is done and they are conventionally pretty to start with. But their entire video is just them talking about how little progress they made, how many pages they deleted, how often they got distracted, how frustrated they are. And like, yeah. We all have those days. But what about the good lines you can't wait to share? The days when the words just flow? The cool stuff you learned while researching? Why don't you ever make videos about that?

Is this some other attempt to seem "relatable" by only talking about the "bad" side of writing? Because again, it's coming across as lacking confidence at best and, at worst, that you don't actually know how to write. And that is not the brand you want as an author.

Again, its always women. Why must women market their self-esteem issues in order to sell their art? Why must we be perpetually awestruck children (girlies, book girls) in over our heads?

Not in the sense of talent or anything but more so that she's 34 and her musical competitor is Olivia Rodrigo 🧍🏾‍♀️ I for the life of me cannot understand how people got it into their heads that it's Beyoncé when they are catering to two different demographics. More often than not, people who listen to beyonce like that are not listening to Taylor and vice versa. It's more likely to be Olivia Rodrigo because Olivia and Taylor are catering to the same demographic and are making the same kind of music

The thing is that even Taylor knows Olivia is her main competitor 😭 she wouldn’t have sued her for deja vu otherwise. And so many ppl try to say that Olivia’s team gave her credits but I don’t buy it. Taylor (or her team, it doesn’t rlly matter) absolutely asked for them. Like the proof that they have beef is literally right there 💀 she and conan were used to promote fearless tv and then a year-and-a-half later when Conan was asked if he had listened to midnights he said he “hadn’t gotten around to it.” People want to use the excuse that Olivia is trying to form her own brand and distance herself from the mega Swiftie she was acting like in the beginning of her career when their lack of interaction at awards shows is brought up. Also don’t even get me started on the fact that Taylor asked Olivia’s best friend and her boyfriend’s ex to open for her on tour 😭 it obviously wasn’t done with the intention of hurting Olivia but it had to have been tough to see that as a lifelong fan

At the beginning of the video he brings up the two categories of pop stars which are 1. The untouchables and 2. The relatables. Taylor falls under the second category meanwhile Beyoncé falls under the first which is just one of the many reasons she is far from being Taylor’s competitor.

Also ppl getting upset that Olivia’s concert isn’t suitable for kids unlike Taylor’s is sending me. Like what did u expect? Olivia is twenty-one years old and not only that but did u not listen to the album before taking your kid to her concert? It’s so obviously too mature for children 💀 she’s had this stereotype since sour came out that she’s for thirteen year olds and that just couldn’t be farther from the truth. The thing about the untouchable vs the relatable is very true. Love her or hate her, Beyoncé definitely has gained this divine like aura over the years. People don't even care about being able to relate to beyonce. She's quite literally worshipped it's insane 😭 whereas Taylor does push this narrative of her being just like the other girls who deal with all the things you do and she's like your best friend who understands you and she wrote this specifically for you

I'm not too versed in the Olivia and Taylor "beef" but I did catch wind of it and I will say it has to suck to basically have a "never meet your idols" moment. As for their shows, Olivia's not being as kid appropriate checks out. Yes I do think both makes music for teenagers and young adults but Olivia's very much gives female rage and teenage angst and not caring about being the dutiful daughter but instead just letting your emotions go wild and not letting yourself be controlled. To me her music is like a teenager who is angry about being a teenager and dealing with teenage bullshit and teenage heartbreak. That makes sense to me because she's 20 and literally living it/just lived it.
