Some thoughts on Lucifer's mental health, relationships, and role as king of hell!

Lucifer’s perception of himself as the king of hell is really interesting to me because he’s very blase about it in canon while totally using it when it suits him.

I think it’s really telling that the first time he actually brings it up himself is when it’s something he can leverage to help Charlie out. He reads to me like someone who objectively knows that he’s the hottest shit in town, but also just doesn’t really think that it matters most of the time because it's not relevant to his personal problems. Being Lucifer Morningstar did not allow him to achieve his goals in petitioning heaven. Being the most powerful person in hell didn’t even un-fuck his family life!

...Except for when suddenly it might in fact help un-fuck his relationship with his daughter.

It's the main thing he can desperately and dramatically showcase as a worthwhile reason for Charlie to maintain a relationship with him, because he as a person is depressed, half-functional, and barely has enough spoons to pay attention to a conversation he's having with her while he's actively having it, nevermind remembering their last one.

He wants to! And it doesn't start with his song at the hotel! It starts with him answering the phone, heavily fumbling actually connecting with Charlie despite clearly desperately wanting to, and then realizing she's asking him for something and promptly choking on his tea before excitedly telling her, "Yeah! Of course! Anything within my power is yours for the asking, you just name it." He knows that there is a great deal 'within his power,' and he's happy and relieved that he can offer her that!

Lilith has been gone for years but he's still wearing his wedding ring. His walls are still covered in family portraits. He's just been sitting in his room making thousands of rubber ducks he thinks suck instead of ruling hell, because his daughter liked that one duck he made one time.

Charlie needed him to support her in her mission, but damn did Lucifer also need Charlie to get him out and moving and actually doing things again.

Anyway, someone get this man on an SSRI.

Alador nodded. "Yeah, my money's on Willow," he said.

Camila threw her hands up. "Am I the only one who has any faith in him!?" Camila vs Hunter's sort-of-dad and sort-of-step-dad; it wasn't a battle of wills that Eda expected, but it was one she enjoyed watching.

"I agree," Perry said. "I'd say Willow."

Raine looked contemplative. They hummed, tapping a rhythm on the table, but didn't offer a side yet.

"Actually, I side with Camila," Lilith said slowly. She looked like she was thinking hard. Weighing the pros and cons would be Eda's bet. "Hunter is shyer than Willow, but he loves her dearly and he's brave. He can be very determined. I can see him proposing."

Darius and Alador exchanged dubious glances. Camila smiled smugly.

"Well, what about Luz and Amity?" Raine asked, tapping their chin.

"Luz," Camila and Eda said.

"Amity," Lilith said.

"Honestly, considering their track record, I expect them both to propose on the same day," Alador said with a shrug. "Or they'll try to anyway. Hopefully without Hooty's involvement this time."

"Is something wrong with Hootsifer?" Lilith demanded.

"You don't want me to answer that."

"Okay," Darius cut in quickly. "What about Gus and Matt?"

Perry snorted. "They'll need to actually date first," he said. "And my hair will be entirely grey by the time those boys sort themselves out. They're both painfully oblivious."

"Are they still calling it a rivalry?" Camila asked sympathetically.

"Unfortunately," Perry sighed.

Alador snorted into his apple blood. Eda gave him and Darius her most shit-eating grin.

"Yeah," Darius sighed. "We'll all be waiting a while on those two."

If I read again "zuko is more mature than aang" i will rip my eyes out because aang is absolutely more mature than him 😭

I mean it does seem intuitively true. zuko is significantly older than aang (in terms of teenage development) and is far more “serious.” i mean he’s deeply unserious ofc, but he tries to be serious and mature and adult, whereas aang decidedly does not. and there’s also the fact that while aang’s greatest flaw is his flightiness, the way he is constantly searching for new fancies and gets distracted by the most trivial of matters, zuko’s greatest flaw is just the opposite, his singular focus, his one-track mind that inhibits him from perceiving and appreciating anything beyond his immediate goal. zuko’s quest to capture the avatar is all-consuming to the point that he never even stops to consider whether it’s fruitful or even necessary, whereas aang’s inverse quest, to defeat the firelord, is constantly being sidetracked in favor of pursuing aang’s whims. so for people who don’t seem to understand how their flaws, personalities, and respective journeys function as narrative inversions, zuko’s guise of maturity as he performs adulthood (ridiculously, i might add) may seem more impressive than aang’s childish whimsy.

that said aang is far wiser, more enlightened, more composed, more humble, more confident, more sociable, and more intelligent than zuko. where zuko yells at everyone and everything, aang keeps a firm handle on his grief and rage most of the time. and it’s not that aang has less rage than zuko, it’s simply that he is largely in control of his rage in a way that zuko is not. it’s not that aang is childish where zuko is adult, but that aang has the wisdom to value his childlike wonder and honesty and sense of hope, whereas zuko’s idealism and purity and open-hearted nature have been violently eroded over the years due to the abuse and imperialist brainwashing he was subject to.

aang was raised in a far more egalitarian environment, which prioritized wisdom, community, and harmony over individualism, patriarchy, and domination. thus, much of aang’s “maturity” over zuko’s “immaturity” is also a product of their incredibly different upbringings (and we also see katara bridge that gap, as someone who is often very emotionally mature and sensitive, but also quite impulsive and tempestuous). for example, aang is far better at communicating with and interpreting others than zuko is, but he was also raised in an environment where friendliness and open communication was valued over scheming and manipulation.

iroh calls zuko “an idealist with a pure heart,” and that’s certainly true, but said pure heart has also been damaged by certain dogmas that aang was not born into and knows better than to submit to. zuko has to actively unlearn the ideology he was born into and instruct himself in what aang already, intuitively knows. so it’s not simply that aang has a better personality than zuko, but that his mindset and worldview had already been shaped by very specific factors that made him more emotionally mature and composed and wise beyond his years, whereas zuko’s worldview forced him into a mold of violence and egotism, which he looks all the more foolish for being unable to perform competently due to the fact that it so starkly contradicts his “true” nature.

of course aang is more enlightened and poised and outgoing than zuko is, he wasn’t raised in a fascist state by an abusive father. and that’s the entire point, that aang’s values do actually triumph over ozai’s (and sozin’s, and azulon’s, etc). zuko demonstrates that fact perfectly just through the sheer contrast of how he navigates the narrative, both individually and in terms of how he functions as a foil to aang. but we live in a world that prioritizes those values (of imperialism and individualism) over the values aang holds dear, and so it seems obvious to many that zuko, the older, more serious, more negative figure, possesses more maturity than the whimsical, fanciful, floating bald baby. and yet, of course, they couldn’t be more wrong.

Aspects that indicate MUTUAL attraction??

That’s there’s no chance for one sided love ..

This is an interesting question because the chemistry can be off the charts (pun not intended) but due to timing (divine timing even) the attraction can remain/become one sided. Sometimes you can even have a case of mutual attraction that stays unrequited because of whatever extenuating circumstances. Sometimes it’s just destined not to be and that’s alright too. with free will and all that it’s anyone’s guess where attraction will go if it goes anywhere at all.

But I can give you some synastry for strong romantic attraction !

-Venus conjunct Asc: this is like the “bam that’s my type” overlay. The Ascendant person is the aesthetic ideal for the Venus person. Everything about the Ascendant person will charm and infatuate the Venus person. The Venus person can also charm the ascendant person pretty easily in most cases. Easy placement to learn someone’s love language if the connection isn’t based on looks alone.

-Mars conjunct Asc: The Mars person will see the Ascendant person as an embodiment of their ideal s*x appeal. It’s another synastry aspect that can be kind of shallow (do they like each other just because of the intimate connection?) but can be a starter for significant attraction. Like sparks at first sight, especially for the planet person.

-Pluto conjunct Asc: Intimidating but oh so revealing. The kind of synastry that isn’t for the faint of heart and may scare certain types away (people that aren’t very plutonic may be curious but may run away from this sort of connection). This is the type of relationship that is going to make the Pluto person go through some sort of change as their shadow side and depth are illuminated with their time with the Ascendant person. The bond can be as dark and dependent as it is hypnotic. The Pluto person can sometimes lash out at the ascendant person because they feel so exposed. This synastry tends to play out best when both people are mature and sincerely care about each other (and the Plutonian connection will expose the truth about their feelings about each other). The connection feels fated.

-Venus Square Mars: The tension pulls the two parties together. Usually the strongest tension comes when the feminine energy is the Venus and the masculine energy is the mars. Can be tricky because ultimately the tension comes from different expressions of love and passion, so if either party is too insecure it can cause the connection to feel more fragile and need more work. The positive side of this is that the two parties really expand each other’s experiences and when they put effort in they can be each other’s most intimate and impressive partners. And the chemistry from the tension is explosive on every level. Never a boring day together for better and for worse.

-Moon conjunct Venus: the emotions and the romantic expression of the two are on the same level. The moon person feels enamored and at home with the Venus person, and the Venus person feels cared for and safe with the moon person. Just really sweet and lovey dovey energy all around that can help the connection last. In the short term it’s warm and renewing and in the long term it can bring a lot of peace to both parties.

-Venus/Mars square Pluto: More intense chemistry. Again not for the faint of heart. The Pluto person will bring about transformation and change in the Venus/Mars person. The two can explore uncharted territory together in terms of romantic/intimate expression. This synastry will often have the Venus/Mars person expressing their deep desires for love and intimacy for the Pluto person. The two will never be the same after this connection.

-Most Scorpio Synastry (but especially moon, venus, & mars overlays): this is so intense, it’s relatively easy to underestimate how deep the passion for this connection can run, especially for the person with the planets in Scorpio. There’s this layer of depth there that’s inherent to Scorpionic relationships, but it’s interesting how this tends to play out. I think it depends on how developed both parties are. The Scorpio person can become obsessive and enamored and the other person can become indulgent on being obsessed over (especially if the overlays are in 1st/8th/10th and to a lesser degree 5th). This can cause a lot of passion and intensity and the intimacy can be unparalleled. But also there’s always a volatile nature to this sort of chemistry. Obsession is a classical double edged sword. There’s passion but there’s also power and control and possession. The connection can be unstable or unbalanced with this sort of energy. If the Scorpio person is underdeveloped they can quickly get controlling and expect the world from the other person. But still a very intense connection nonetheless.
