Just found out Hynden Walch voiced Lillian O'Malley-Gracey or Sally Slater for something called “Ghost Post” for the Haunted Mansion? I’m assuming this is an arg of some sort. I also asked on Twitter hope someone says something.

Do you mind talking about about your mansion au 👀
So, I have ranted about this a little bit before (and you can read that here), but I do want to accentuate that this is something that probably does not land nearly as hard as it should for anyone who is not obsessed with the Haunted Mansion ride/lore as I am. As such, since I've already broadly gone over it, maybe here I will touch on it a little more specifically.
Nihil is supposed to be the George Gracey Jr. figure. He is the last rightful owner of the Mansion, from a long, storied history with it as a hotbed of paranormal activity.
Sister is a play on Madame Leota, the over-invested witch/medium who entangled herself with the Mansion's owner so that she could stay close to the most powerful Hell Pit that exists in the world, but who fell prey to her own machinations and got trapped in a crystal ball before she could trap her enemies there, instead.
All of the boys are sort of their own selves, but the children of significant other characters - One's mother is Emily, Two's is Lillian, and Three's is (my other fav girl of all time) Constance. None of them lasted long in their arranged marriages with Nihil because of his & Sister's efforts to slyly get rid of all of them in various and sundry ways. (Which worked out for the best, all around - especially with Constance, who definitely meant him harm for her Own Reasons.)
As such, Copia sort of ends up being the Little Leota equivalent, just based on his parentage.
Ultimately what happened is that in a failed attempt to thwart Nihil's family working against them, Sister herself ended up at the mercy of her own banishment spell and his family took this as an opportunity to trick him into believing that she'd fled. He knew this couldn't be the case and they must have done something to her, so after sending his children away, he murdered basically every other living person in the Mansion and then killed himself, also.
There's a lot of backstory that matches up with how I imagine canon - them meeting as children, him being sent away and mostly forgetting his childhood, then being brought back into the fold when he is meant to assume the head of family position and falling in love again with Sister - so I hope it makes sense when I say the ghostly ballroom scene is, essentially, the events of the "Dance Macabre" video.
And after their deaths/disappearances, this is a curse on the Mansion - every year on the anniversary of that night, the events play out again. A fancy ball welcoming home the heir to Emeritus Mansion, the re-meeting of lovers, Nihil's reintroduction to the weird world his childhood home exists in, etc. It drives Sister mad, every time, because he never remembers that they're reliving a memory, which is why every single time, he looks so lost and confused.
One of these days, though. One of these days, she'll be strong enough to break the cycle...

Haunted Mansion Tightrope Walker -Part 2, Pattern & Construction
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As promised, Part 2 of the Tightrope Walker Cosplay project - it's not spot on perfect - and I still need to make the little furred capelet at some point - but I'm really happy with how this turned out!
Pic-heavy below the cut
The Skirt and Petticoats:
I definitely wanted some floof for that skirt! I already owned a pink tulle 1950s rockabilly petticoat. I invested in a ruffled peach cotton underskirt for some maximum fluff - and the hem of the peach skirt served as a handy guide for where I wanted my skirt hem, so the pink tulle will just daintily peep out.
Tumblr media
I had a sneaky peak at Spoonflower where all the lovely custom Haunted Mansion fabrics hide, and worked out four metres would do nicely for a skirt. I chose SewnByFairies' TightRopeWalker Girl Large print fabric for mine, in Petal Signature Cotton.
This was probably the priciest part of my cosplay (Spoonflower is lovely, but it ain't cheap) But the fabric came very quickly, and I'm happy to say the cotton made up beautifully!
Tumblr media
Making the skirt was the easiest part, for me - I have dozens of patterns for full skirts! I simply shortened a long Victorian costume skirt pattern I had to the right length for the pink frill to show. The pleating gives it a lovely period bell-shaped skirt!
The Shoes
These were the easiest part. I already had a pair of coral pink ballet flats in my wardrobe - and they already had little loops at the sides of the soles for adding ribbon ties. I rummaged in my trimmings stash and found some old coral pink dress ties that matched perfectly! Delicate 1830s slippers done in an instant.
Tumblr media
The Bodice
This was the part I knew would be the most labour-intensive. It was also a total experiment for me, since I'd never even tried 1830s patterns before now! It might have been a total failure. But I took a deep breath, did my research, and the Truly Victorian Romantic 1830s dress was probably the best for my needs:
Tumblr media
(Short sleeved evening version shown on the lady sitting down)
The patterns allows for a gathered or plain bodice. I played it safe and went for plain. I also was pretty good on my stash-busting resolution, and only used fabrics I already had - so if it went totally wrong, it wouldn't be too much of a waste. And as the skirt was in a cotton (and I'm hoping to wear this to Disney Halloween in Florida at some point),
I thought making up the bodice in light breathable cotton rather than velvet and silk would be a sensible choice - and much easier to sew with! It's boned and lined on the inside, with was probably the fiddliest part - and the sleeves are lined with two layers of net to give them the necessary pouf.
Tumblr media
It made up really nicely - not bad, for a first go! The sleeve lace was a couple of vintage pieces I found in a vintage job-lot online - and I already had the pink wired ribbon in my trim stash, along with the neckline trim and purple buttons. The pattern recommended piping, but I'm afraid I wasn't that brave...
The Hair
This one was fun! There's some great 1830s historical costumers around online, and many of them happily share their resources for anyone who's interested. Koshka The Cat, one of my favourite costuming blogs, shared this wonderful piece on styling 1830s crazy hair here: I'd thoroughly recommend people check it out.
I used it as a basis for a simpler version for my Tightrope Walker girl (although I am tempted by the idea of ribbons and accessories in it - maybe some time)
Tumblr media
AI had already bought two side ringlet pieces in my hair colour from FancyNancyUpdos on Etsy. I trimmed the ringlets down to the right length I wanted, and then attached them to a simple plastic hairband. I then found a cheap braided hair-bun to hide the band and provide the wonderful top-knot TightRopeWalker Girl has! T
The Parasol
Tumblr media
If I was sticking strictly to the source material, this should be pink and frilly, but - I saw this little short paper parasol on Ebay and fell in love! The purple was the same shade as the bodice, and the ghostly blue painted flowers on the shade just echo Haunted Mansion's colours. It was too cute for me to resist.
I need to put it all together for a photoshoot sometime, maybe even make that pesky capelet, but I'm pretty happy with my Tightrope Girl attempt!

Tightrope Girl but I used the only colors I had on me
Yesterday in fifth period I had free time on me so I used some of the markers my teacher brought out for the class to use to color this! The skin color was the hardest part of this drawing! I didn’t have a skin color on me so I used my lightest orange and shaded very lightly and shaded with brown! 💖

AN EXTENSIVE DEEP DIVE INTO THE HAUNTED MANSION / GRACEY FAMILY
this shall definitely be placed under a read more as i’m basically combining all current canon and fanon into one personal interpretation. this is by no means an end-all-be-all headcanon as to the events, persons, and relations of those within gracey manor. just how it pertains to my version of edward gracey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE GRACEY FAMILY
the gracey mansion and subsequent estate it resides on, located in new orleans, louisiana have been in the gracey family for many generations, having been built by edward’s great-great-great-great-great grandfather. it was passed down from son to son until it reached edward’s father, GEORGE GRACEY. his wife, sadly, died shortly after giving birth to edward, and with george running various tourist businesses to help build his son’s inheritance, edward was primarily under the care of RAMSLEY, the family butler.
edward never really developed a familial bond with his father, but was introduced to his sister CONSTANCE three years later; a child born out of another relationship george participated in frivolously and who was dropped on the gracey doorstep. so when george, too, died when edward was 7, he wasn’t as heartbroken as he could be, and ramsley took over raising the young boy and his young sister, becoming the interim proprietor of the estate and oversaw edward’s inheritance, all of which would be transferred to young master gracey upon his 18th birthday.
throughout his youth, edward grew up with his various friends within the mansion, all children of various maids and butlers hired by ramsley. his closest friend, however, was ELIZABETH HENSHAW, the woman edward would eventually fall in love with.
his 18th birthday came and went, and even with everything under his name, edward wasn’t satisfied. in his youth, he became obsessed with the occult and the supernatural, desiring a way to stay youthful and alive longer than his parents had. he kept ramsley as his personal aid in the mansion while he went off in search of answers to his many life questions. his search led him to MADAME LEOTA, a medium who seemed to have all the answers he was looking for. bringing the young woman back to the estate, he allowed her to practice within the mansion. madame leota quickly became more attached to his sister, constance who, with her guidance, changed her name to CONSTANCE HATCHAWAY to break from the assumptions that came with being a gracey. i’d go deeper into her story, but this is more about edward, obviously, so i’ll leave her story mostly untouched. murdered five husbands over the course of her life and so on and so forth.
with his gathering of masters in the occult, edward relished in his work, and would wind down by throwing lavish parties and balls, all the while growing fonder and fonder of elizabeth. other occupants of the mansion would now include LILLIAN O’MALLEY, a younger tightrope walker; ALEXANDER NITROKOFF, a groundskeeper with an affinity for dynamite; the MELLOMEN, an acapella barbershop quintet; EZRA, another butler; EMMA, a maid and the closest thing to a mother edward had; and many MANY others, all of whom either took up permanent residence within the mansion, or were frequent enough visitors that they became tied to the estate.
in his late 20s, edward and elizabeth were inseparable, and he eventually drew up the courage to proposed by letter at a grand ball he had thrown for the occasion. her letter she wrote in response accepting the proposal was given to ramsley, who switched it for a refusal and suicide note, and over a ‘toast to her new engagement’, ramsley poisoned her drink, killing her and giving the letter to edward, who was too late to save her upon reading it.
from that day on, edward locked himself in his room and study, falling into a deep depression. it wasn’t until he found the true letter elizabeth had read that he finally emerged, confronting ramsley and killing him in his rage. overwhelmed with what he had done, gracey locked up all of elizabeth’s things, putting it all into the attic with her wedding dress, and with the key in his pocket, he hanged himself that same night at the age of 28.
his hanging set forth the curse upon the mansion, with madame leota having put it in place; he would live on, yes, but the other inhabitants would be doomed to die soon after, their souls being tied to the mansion, never being able to pass on. in order to preserve her own soul, she encased it in her crystal ball, and the mansion was left in gracey’s hands even in the afterlife.
CHANGES TO VARIOUS OTHER CANONS
EDWARD ONLY LOVED ONE WOMAN, ELIZABETH. as i follow mostly the film canon in this regard, elizabeth can be used interchangeably with EMILY CAVANAUGH or LILLIAN O’MALLY/SALLY SLATER. i realize that in ‘ghost gallery’ canon it is said that edward was romantically involved with both, but i still hold firm that he only loved and proposed to one person in his life. i also refuse to see edward having madame leota as a mistress. it just doesn’t sit right with me. however, this doesn’t mean he didn’t experiment or have flings as a young man before returning to elizabeth, but he would never have married anyone else after her death. he just loved her too much.
CONSTANCE IS HIS SISTER, NOT MOTHER. many canon sources say that constance hatchaway is the mother to young master gracey, but i prefer my own original interpretation of them being siblings. it’s just a me thing, and obviously this can be plotted out on a case-by-case basis.
THE ONE BURIED IN THE CEMETERY IS HIS FATHER. the gravestone of ‘master gracey’ is actually that of GEORGE GRACEY, while edward is actually buried in a mausoleum in an unmarked grave by madame leota. this incorporates both attraction and film canons with my own interpretation of whose grave it is in the film and why that specific corpse would have the key to the trunk of elizabeth’s belongings.
EDWARD’S DESIRE TO REMAIN YOUTHFUL IS DIRECTLY INSPIRED BY DOR.IAN GRAY. the timeline of the haunted mansion puts edward being born around the same time as os.car wilde’s publication of ‘the pi.cture of d.orian g.ray’, so it is safe to assume he would have grown up reading wilde’s novels, including d.orian g.ray. this takes into account the canon similarities of edward gracey and d.orian g.ray, and how the gracey portrait in the mansion attraction is a direct nod and reference to the portrait of d.orian g.ray in the novel.
EDWARD WENT ON A BENDER THE NIGHT OF HIS DEATH. overrot with depression and grief, he thought that throwing another big party would solve all his problems, or at least get elizabeth off his mind. with ramsley dead, a bit more drink in his system than usual, and elizabeth’s belongings locked away in a safe place in the attic, the party began. gracey did make a few bad decisions, and by the end of the night, he regretted them all. he excused himself from the party and hanged himself in the rafters, thus dooming the inhabitants to be tied to the mansion upon their death due to leota’s curse being activated.
RAMSLEY AND ELIZABETH ARE NOT TIED TO THE MANSION. the reason for this is due to the curse not being in affect at the times of their deaths. ramsley went to hell and elizabeth to heaven, respectively. this is obviously flexible, as i wouldn’t want to shut out anyone who plays these characters, but for anything not plotted with others, it is assumed both have left the realm of the living.
THERE IS NOT A KNOWN WAY TO BREAK THE CURSE ON THE MANSION. it seems harsh, but leota never instilled a fail safe for the curse. all are cursed to wander the grounds. like the above, this can be flexible, but would take a lot of plotting. edward has come to terms with his situation, and so have the hundreds of other ghosts on the grounds.

Disney’s Haunted Mansion: The Dread Family
The Gracey Mansion is famous for its residents. Many say that this is the most haunted place in the country, where nine hundred and ninety-nine spirits live. The property has a long, bloody history and several owners have lost their lives inside its rooms.
In the Mansion's most recent history, the famous estate found itself without an owner when millionaire George Hightower and his fiancée, Constance Hatchaway, lost their lives inside the place they called home.
The inheritance finally passed to George Hightower's aunt, Florence, and her husband, Jacob.
But, of course, the Dread family was just another victim of The Haunted Mansion.
• Jonathan Hyde as Jacob Dread: Greed was the poison he had swallowed. He went first, the others followed. He and his wife, Florence, received a beautiful mansion after the death of her nephew. Who knew that the new millionaire acquisition would awaken the worst side of their family...
• Kurt Russell as Herbert “Bertie” Dread: Avid hunter and expert shot, in the end that’s what he got. Jacob's brother, a famous hunter and herpetologist, his greed and envy were enough to produce the first murder in the Dread family.
• Imelda Staunton as Florence Dread (née McGriffin): Never did a dishonorable deed, yet found face down in canary seed. Jacob's wife and legitimate owner of the Gracey Mansion's inheritance has always been a correct and upright woman, until her husband was found dead after drinking a poisoned cup of tea.
• Jaeden Martell as Wellington Dread and Raffey Cassidy as Forsythia Dread: Departed in life while in their beds, with identical bumps on identical heads. The twins are the children of hunter Bertie Dread and the late circus artist Lillian Gracey, a distant relative of the Mansion's original owner. Both are sure that the inheritance is rightfully theirs, considering their mother's lineage.
• Frances McDormand as Maude Sweeney: Our sleeping beauty, who never awoke the night her dreams went up in smoke. Florence's cousin and nanny to the twins, Maude sees her opportunity for revenge and enrichment when her cousin suffocates by birdseed. Unfortunately, anyone who plays with fire ends up getting burned.

M-P Goes All Crafty - Haunted Mansion Edition Tightrope Walker Cosplay
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as the 18th century jacket, there's also been ANOTHER little project I've been working on - I finished the main body of it today, so you're going to have to listen to me babble about it!
Right before 'Rona hit last March I took a visit to Disney World Florida, and I kinda fell in love with the delightfully kooky Haunted Mansion vibe. It's Gothic but ...whimsical, in a fun, playful way - and given my only exposure to HM before this had been the uh, Eddy Murphy movie... wow, I fell in love with this ride, big time!
And I just LOVED the Tightrope Girl. She's one of the wonderful portraits in the Stretching Room on the ride - what starts out as an innocent-looking sweet historical portrait gradually reveals a fraying tightrope and an eager alligator in the swamp, waiting to gobble the performer up!
Tumblr media
She's had a lot of different names over the years - Ally Gal, Sarah " Sally" Slater, Daisy de la Cruz and Lillian Gracey/O'Malley, to name just a few. She's one of the most popular characters on the ride.
Type in ' tightrope walker disney dress' and Google's full of talented recreations by wonderful cosplayers!
The park even does a cute character-inspired dress to match in this gift shops:
Tumblr media
It's cute , but - I'm very much a do or die historical nerd, and I was DYING to try a slightly more historical version of the gown.
The Historic Research
First off, the sleeves were a great clue about which period to go for - as well as the wacky hair. The huge puff sleeves in their direction and trim are pure 1830s poof, especially combined with the skirt ! In fact, it really reminded me of the BBC's 1999 Wives and Daughters, as well as Maria Taglioni - a ballet dancer of the period.
Tumblr media
The skirt length, neckline and off the shoulder sleeves in this portrait of Maria are all VERY Tightrope Girl, if lacking the poof. Although Maria is positively restrained compared to the frilly goodness on display above. So, I turned to more grand fashion pieces.
I mean - when you compare these fashion plates and the neckline, not to mention the wacky hair, of the original Tightrope Girl...
Tumblr media
They're long ball dresses, but the lace trim on that blue gown's large beret sleeves? Definitely a very similiar POOF! And the trademark 1830s hair - almost triangular clumps of ringlets framing the face, with a high topknot at the back. It's a more cartoony take, but Tightrope Girl's Hair is super similar....
Tumblr media
This 'Paris Ball Dress' fashion plate is even closer! The sleeves and the lace trim are practically the same - as well as the shape of the hair. Clearly 1830s was the way to go!
So historical research done into what fits Tightrope Girl best - what next? Patterns and actual making, that's what! I'll have to make a separate post about that...
