me? secret garden posting in 2024? never(/sarcasm)
anyway I got one of the songs from the musical stuck in my head so boom secret garden doodles (mostly based on the musical because I haven't read the book in a while)
if you thought these were escapism characters for a second, I don't blame you!! the secret garden was/is one of my biggest inspirations for escapism (i.e. Neville is a bit inspo for Charles, Archie & Mary are inspos for Martha (my Martha, not secret garden martha-))

saw the "who's your most underrated Kleypas hero" question getting bandied about (again) today, and I must say, the only answers I'll accept are:
--John McKenna/Again the Magic (I'd argue that AtM is not the DEEP CUT newer Kleypas readers think it is; before I read it, it was definitely upheld as a classic of hers, but people who want the softer boys she writes in the Ravenels... may not like this one; however, McKenna fucks RIDICULOUS lbr)
--Alex, Lord Raiford/Then Came You (yes... he calls her a bitch.... and I'll be real this made me love him more... he carried her over his shoulder outta Craven's and bought her a bear I'm VERY confident in this choice)
--Kev Merripen/Seduce Me at Sunrise (thought he'd kill Win with his massive dick, tied her up and took her to his fuck cottage, is Heathcliff if Heathcliff wasn't horrible basically)
--Leo Hathaway/Married by Morning (fun bout wounded king, "haha" in the streets and "oh shit" in the sheets, notable for making Catherine ask him to touch her pussy in explicit and specific language)
#romance novel blogging#besides rhys winterborne............ ravenel heroes are kinda mid! i'll be honest!#'but what of five feelings tom' his book bored me i'll try it again someday#west ravenel is the greatest disappointment of my life#gabriel and keir struggled under the weight of their father's slutty slutty legacy#devon was fine. but only fine.#don't even talk to me about ethan#mostly bc i don't remember a single defining feature#i just think the ravenels is a perfectly fine series#but to me it is truly dumbed down kleypas#it's kleypas for people who can't handle sebastian kidnapping lillian#or derek craven fucking that sex worker#or derek craven doing a minor stranglehold on a very bad lady#or alex calling lily a bitch (THERE ARE REASONS)#or kev refusing to take responsibility for tittygate bc he was very down on himself and also bc his dick might kill her#or mckenna spending literal years plotting aline's downfall lmao#leo is honestly p normal but he WAS a sad alcoholic!!!#(never mind westcliff being like 'well she seems into when she's blackout and that's good enough for me')#i just think the ravenels was written with the idea of appealing to people who don't go hard w historicals basically#and that doesn't mean you can't like it! i like several! including the one everyone hates!#but even the ones i like.... aside from MW i feel like there's some magic missing#and i think the magic is a lack of inhibition#and don't get me wrong lol she published bad books before the ravenels#books much worse than the ravenels#but like. idk. i just don't know how you can read like the ravenels#then go back and read the wallflowers or DoY or AtM#and not notice... a quality difference

What do you think it is about The Secret Garden that has captured audience’s hearts over the years?
Fundamentally I suppose it is a story about hope, life continuing and change being possible. That will always have audiences hearts. Combine that with a sweepingly beautiful score, full of craft and grace, and that feels to me a winning recipe.
(Always love a good Hadley interview...)

Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1A
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(this poll breaks my heart)
Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald (1970) holds the record for most Tony acting awards a person has ever won. She is one of five actors to be nominated across all four respective acting categories and the only person to win every one (and the only actress out of the three who is still living...). Her stage work includes: Ragtime (1998), Porgy and Bess (2012), and Lady Day at Emmerson's Bar and Grill (2014) among so much more on Broadway and far beyond. All this woman needs is an Oscar to EGOT, and what are we as a society doing to make that happen? Audra debuted on Broadway as a replacement in The Secret Garden, and yes, Rebecca Luker was still there.
Rebecca Luker (1961-2020) was known for her luminous work in The Secret Garden (1991) as the original Lily Craven, The Sound of Music (1998), and The Music Man (2000) where she was nominated for a Tony alongside an iconic lineup (Audra McDonald, Marin Mazzie, Toni Collette, and Heather Headley). She had an extensive regional theatre and concert career and had four solo recordings. In February 2020, she was diagnosed with ALS, and by October her beautiful voice was all but gone. Rebecca passed away in December of 2020. She was 59.
PROPAGANDA AND MEDIA UNDER CUT:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
"Is any propaganda really needed? Is saying six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald not enough for you people? Just listen to this woman's voice and tell me your soul doesn't ascend to a higher plane of being. And just listen to her do Lady Day. Audra McDonald, what the fuck? How are you this talented? Audra McDonald is THE Broadway Diva and a true triple threat. She has ten Tony nominations to her name, and is right up there alongside the legends that were Julie Harris and Chita Rivera."

youtube
"True operatic sopranos are a dying breed in the most literal sense. Rebecca was a gift to this world, and I miss her dearly. Her Marian in The Music Man was everything, and I refuse to acknowledge that we live in a world where we had her revive Barbara Cook's role after over forty years, only to get a second revival barely two decades later with a fucking belter in a soprano role. Go listen to Rebecca Luker's "My White Knight" and cleanse yourself, and watch how she somehow finds the bootleg camera and sings right to it."

Why Freddy Is A Child Killer And Nothing More.
SO! I am fucking sick and tired of seeing this shit over and over again so I think it is high time I make a post addressing this formally. Freddy Krueger is not a pedophile, child molester, kiddy toucher, or whatever the fuck you want to call it.
You might be saying “Well Bex! I heard that originally Wes Craven-” Yup. Originally Wes Craven played around with the idea of it but it was cut early on and did not make it into the final script and nothing pertaining to that was ever shot either.
Next you might say, “Oh but what about the 2010 remake? He was totally a fucking pedo in that!”
You are right in the 2010 remake he was! Okay. So. I am gonna say this next part loudly and clearly.
Fuck the 2010 remake.
Wes Craven has literally nothing to do with it. In fact they did not consult Wes on the remake at all and he expressed his displeasure over that fact as well! The remake is not fucking canon to me and many others due to that fact alone. The vast, vast majority of people you see on here, myself included, who love Freddy are talking about the OG 80s and New Nightmare Freddy played by Robert Englund.
Speaking of Robert Englund! He is very important to this conversation. Now why is that? Because he played the character for twenty years? Yes I think that does give him a good amount of say in this conversation. But more than that he literally made the character who is. After A Nightmare On Elm Street back in 1984, the first one, Robert asked for more money and better billing when ANOES 2 was going to happen, the studio said fuck that, the makeup is the most important part! And they recast him!
They got two weeks into shooting before they realized how hard they fucked up and asked for Robert back, meeting his originally, extremely fair, especially considering his role, demands.
Freddy is not just saying bitch, it is not corny one liners and it is NOT just make up, there is a fuck ton more to him, there is depth and Robert? Clearly understands that to the point that the studio agreed no one else could play him in the original franchise’s run. So I think we can agree what Robert thinks about Freddy is clearly important, leading to my next point.
As for what Robert actually has to say on the matter, and I quote from this article published on Bloody Disgusting in 2015 of what he said when asked for his thoughts on this by some fans at comic con.
“You can imagine Freddy to be anything you want,” Englund began. “My theory is the word “child killer”, there’s something darkly…darkly poetic about that. It’s a very frightening phrase. Child killer! That should be enough. And I think there’s something symbolic about being a child killer. He kills children because children are their future and there’s no place for Freddy in the future. And it’s revenge on the parents! It’s the most painful thing a parent can do is to lose a child before they die. I mean, I can’t imagine how anybody…how any adults or parents survive that, the death of a child. So that’s nasty enough!”
I mean that says it all to me. He has been asked on many occasions and I have seen him even refer to the idea of Freddy being a molester as “gilding the lily” basically, it is wholly unnecessary like a hat on a hat. Freddy being a child killer is enough. Wes thought so. Robert thinks so too.
And for me? That is more than enough. I hope this clears up shit for a lot of people.

Could you recommend some historical novels with some kind of game involved? Idk chess, cards, etc
Yes! This is by no means a comprehensive list because there are a lot that are tangentially set in gambling hells and the like, but here are some of my favorites:
Convergence of Desire by Felicity Niven has a card game subplot; Harry is a savant and can easily count cards, and she realizes her and Thomas's houseguests are cheating them during cards so they devise a plan to win back their money. Tom's also a gambler and a high-stakes one from what I remember.
What I Did For The Duke by Julie Anne Long has a sexually tense game of blindman's bluff complete with not-very-discreet groping, and then a dramatic card game that finally makes Genevieve realize in a very roundabout way that the duke loves her and wants her to be happy unconditionally.
The Design of Dukes by Kathleen Ayers has a way-too-sexually-tense game of lawn bowling. The hero later admits he wanted to tug the heroine's skirts up on the lawn and take her then and there.
Prince of Broadway by Joanna Shupe has a heroine who wants to start a gambling hell for ladies so she asks big bad casino owner Clay Madden for lessons.
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean: There's a really hot card game scene at the end where Ralston is basically Done and ready to get this seduction started after Callie is all "hm I wonder what it would be like to be a courtesan".
The Awakening of Ivy Leavold by Sierra Simone: this is a historical erotic romance; There's a game of blind-man's bluff that turns into an orgy by the end.
All the Ways to Ruin a Rogue by Sophie Jordan: Aurelia likes to sneak out and go to a pleasure club dressed as a courtesan and play cards and at one point I believe the hero has to pay a forfeit where he strips naked in front of everyone.
The Viscount Always Knocks Twice by Grace Callaway: It's a house party so there's lots of games; I remember hide and seek which ended with Violet and Carlisle making out in a Priest Hole, and Carlisle also gifts Violet with a handmade bow and arrows during their courtship because she likes those kids of games/sports.
Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas: Derek Craven owns a gambling hell, there's a GREAT scene where Sara is disguised by a mask and she's playing cards and all them men can't help but he drawn to her including, of course, Derek Craven. This is actually suuuch a romantic part of the book, at least until he finds out it's Sara under the mask and then it descends into (horny) farce.
Then Came You by Lisa Kleypas: Lily agrees to a high-stakes card game and if she loses she has to sleep with the hero Alex; obviously she loses, there's this really interesting bit where Derek Craven half-assedly protects her honor in that he tells Alex to be gentle with her, but also, says she needs to honor her debts and basically shoves her into a private room to await Alex lolol.
Secrets of a Summer Night by Lisa Kleypas: Annabelle and Hunt play a lot of chess while she's recovering from a snake bite and it does get to the point where she's having sex dreams about it. Both this book and It Happened One Autumn have scenes where the wallflowers are playing rounders (kind of like baseball?), most notably in SoSN where they're playing in their underwear and Simon Hunt and Westcliff happen upon them.
The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn has a pall-mall scene where Kate and Anthony are super competitive and Kate ends the game by whacking Anthony's ball into the lake.
Gavin Hunt from Her Wanton Wager by Grace Callaway, Cross from One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean, and Aiden Trewlove from The Duchess in his Bed by Lorraine Heath are some of my favorite gambling hell heroes except I can't quite remember how much gaming there is in their books, but I strongly recommend them.
