OH YEAH i finally got final fantasies: the boys from joelles blog roadtrip adventure (formal game title). i didnt start it yet bc we prepped biriyani today but maybe if its doesnt start with an hour of visual novel at the beginning I can try playing it tomorrow. maybe ill even like it. and if not it was $5 so I'm okay with the outcome 👍

Have you ever/would you be willing to give some tips and pointers on your scales process? I really love the texture and weight they add with a few tiny details. I've tried mimicking something similar a few times with limoted success but I think hearing some of your thought process for shape and placement would be helpful.
yes absolutely! i follow the vague idea that showing a LITTLE is better than showing TOO much - you just need to show an impression of a scale, not every single one. I do this by using brushes with a pointed edge, and using a soft touch. usually i try to shade a few scales in the light, dark, and middle sections of the shading, in small groups

so with this one, i wanted to show the scale impression against the lighter colour. using a few different opacities, i used an eraser to show the scales! I find using a 30-50% opacity eraser is really useful as you can get some really light, but still pronounced scales. For placement, I like to place along the start of a shading layer near the edges. i hope that makes sense! this is so hard to explain but using the impression of a scale is what i try to aim for. Also! not getting lost in the details. These scales are just shapes, they dont really look like scales close up but as a whole, they do! its an illusion!
