Hellos my little lovies!! Jskdjsdksjdksj
Here is some more art of Lin Beifong that I have promised. I do apologize it took me so long but I’ve been. . . Lazy XD
Anyways here is the art of Lin Beifong and my oc Gaia who is a sandbender. I have a few stories coming up with her in them so I hope you guys will be patient!
So here is the beginning of Gaia and Lin’s relationship, though it was not as bright and cheery as it may seem. Below the cut I’ll have a few headcanons so I hope you’ll enjoy them!! And I’m sorry they’re in grey coloring, I sort of got lazy XD.
Tumblr media
Alright without further ado, here are the hc’s you were waiting for and minor stories.
Gaia and Lin first met when Gaia was still new to the White Lotus. She was a prodigal sandbender but earthbender? Nope- 💀 You see, Gaia couldn’t bend earth as well as she would have liked. Just barely lifting a rock without straining and being in pain.
Gaia arrived to Republic City for the first time in her life in her early to late 20’s. First time she saw Lin she was fully stunned and was in a gay panic. Never in her life had she saw a woman that was beyond beauty.
First time looked at Gaia she was unimpressed, she didn’t know why they recruited someone so… weak. She couldn’t bend metal much less earth what was the whole deal with that.
Gaia was often times posted where Tenzin was located at. The White Lotus members thinking it would be a good thing for both Tenzin and Gaia to be assigned together. Lin at first was ready to bite Gaia’s head off for trying to flirt with Tenzin until she saw Gaia flirting with one of the older female guards (and terribly fail at it as Gaia was just a baby gay).
Lin also ignored the way Gaia stared at her at times. The way she’d turn her head and watch as Gaia looked startled and her face heat up in embarrassment as she tried to turn and hide her face, pretending she wasn’t just caught staring at Lin. “Do I have something on my face cadet?” And Gaia just turning more red all while the other guards just laugh at Gaia. “N-No ma’am.”
Gaia always acted like a goofball, always found climbing on top of the roof or pranking Tenizin in someway or another. She definitely got along well with Kya and Bumi.
Lin hated to admit it but, she found Gaia cute at times. Loving her care free attitude or the way she’d be a stuttering mess around Lin and tried to invite her out for drinking. Lin always gave her a hard time and never went but it made her heart happy to see how Gaia never took it to heart and always said there would be a next time.
It was one of those times Lin was on one of her fights with Tenzin when she ran into Gaia, Gaia is a pretty sturdy tall build and of course it caused Lin to land on her ass. Lin was still in the rage and snapped at Gaia for being in the way. Choice words were made and Lin commented on her lack of earthbending. Lin leaving before she could see the hurt in Gaia’s eyes.
After that encounter Gaia was seen actually doing her work, no messing about was made and she even made it to her posts on time and her trainings. Lin came by a few days later and it felt like the whole islands vibes were off. She found out why when she saw Gaia standing at her post, not talking or smiling and actually seeming serious for once.
Lin tried to apologize and Gaia just nodded her head and told her it was fine. Lin knew it wasn’t fine but waved Gaia off and left. The next few weeks was awkward and they didn’t make up at all until she found Gaia down at the beach trying to bend a giant boulder.
Lin has never seen Gaia so mad before, has never seen Gaia look so pissed off and hopeless. “Are you okay?”
Gaia just jumped before rolling her eyes and crossing her arms. “Everything’s fine.” Gaia said curtly. Gaia sat down on the and running her fingers through the sand to try and calm herself. “Come here to tease me about not being able to earthbend? Might as well, I can’t even lift a pebble.” Gaia muttered.
Lin felt horrible but she wouldn’t ever admit it. “Well I was wondering who was screaming like a lunatic and being an officer it’s kind of my job to see why.” Lin said with a shrug of her shoulders.
Gaia just hugging her legs while glaring at the sand. “It’s not like I’m not practicing. I’ve been practicing for however long I can remember.”
“Why can’t you… bend. . . earth? I-I mean, I’m not being rude or anything but my sister was able to bend when she was 3.”
Gaia just giving her an annoyed look before she sighed and brought her braid to the side. A long, jagged-ish scar was seen on the back of her neck, straight across and even Lin could tell it was painful. “I was sort of in a bad home when I was younger, you had to steal and do all sorts of stuff in order to survive. I went into a house that was supposed to be a easy score and I was struck from behind.” Gaia just breathing out as rain began to pour down. “And growing up in the deserts, you only ever needed sand bending. I was the best, was supposed to be the best and boom-“
“I almost died, my father was mad and gave me to the old ladies of the village, and left. It took months to recover and all I know I was never the same after that incident. Every time I tried to bend any rock or boulder it would hurt, making it feel like someone was pulling on my nerves and it just hurts.” It was then Lin realized Gaia always rubbed the back of her neck or held her hand there after sparring or practicing her stances.
Lin and Gaia stayed quiet and listened to the rain pour down on them, not even bothered by the chilly rain or breeze. “Have you talked to… Aang? I’m sure he can help-“
“That’s why I’m here. I was going to become a guard for a prison but Kazaa promised me that he’ll help me learn earthbending. Avatar Aang is supposed to help but he’s been busy.” Gaia muttered hiding her face in her arms.
“That’s… shit. I’m sorry for what I said the other day. I was just pissed off at airhead and I took it out on you. Though I was pissed off at you because you looked so happy to see me and you..l confuse me.” Lin muttered laying her head on her arm looking at the boulder of a woman. Lin could feel her cheeks heat up but refused to decipher what it meant.
Gaia could feel the tops of her ears burn red and bit back a smirk. “Sorry, not everyone gets to see the badass Lin Beifong and survive. I like strong women that can basically kill me, arrest me if that’s illegal.”
Lin snorted and shoved the others shoulder gently. “Shut up, flattery gets you nowhere cadet. Now does this mean we’re okay or what?” Lin hoping it was because she missed the polarbear dog expressions and happiness.
“Nope.” Gaia deadpanned. Lin rose her brows ready to apologize more and ask why when the other interrupted her. “Take me out on a friend date and I’ll forgive you.” Gaia wasn’t going to budge or miss this opportunity.
“A date? You know I’m with Tenzi-“
“No not like that. Spirits no matter how badly I want no. I just meant a friend date. Take me to a bar you like, show me around the city. Anything fun, I’m stuck on this island 24/7 unless Tenzin randomly wants to go into the city for something and it’s always work. Let’s do something fun. I want my time here fun and exciting!”
Lin could feel her heart thump, hearing the excitement, the adventurous side of the other struck something inside of her and she couldn’t help but smile at the other. “Fine. But just this one time.”
It was definitely not the one time. They went on many friend dates and Lin realized she loved hanging out with the idiot. She wasn’t as bad as she first thought.
Throughout the next few months Lin and Gaia got closer and Lin even began to train Gaia, teaching her the basics and even made her meditate and learn patience along with discipline.
A year or two later:
Lin and Tenzin broke up and Lin stopped coming to the island. Gaia was missing her friend but she was stuck watching the asshole that broke Lin’s heart. Not to mention she’s heard about how Lin and her family were at odds and Lin was all alone.
One day Gaia decided to take a couple of weeks off and went to see Lin. Lin was a terrible mess. Was drunk, her apartment unkempt which was definitely not how Lin usually was.
Gaia decided to take care of the woman and cleaned up her apartment and nursed her through her drunken state. Of course Lin yelled at her and screamed at her to get out but like a huge idiot, Gaia didn’t listen and went about keeping Lin get better.
While Lin was in a bad mood and said choice words to Gaia, Gaia never took it personally and told Lin they were friends and promised she’d never leave her. It was the first time Lin has ever felt loved for who she was and she ended up crying in Gaia’s arms and slept in her arms. It was the most comforted and loved Lin has ever felt in her life.
It was a month or two and Lin decided she would give Gaia a shot, she wouldn’t exactly date her but more of a test drive, to see if she’d ever be able to date again.
Gaia seemed hesitant and told Lin she didn’t have to do this and that she didn’t want Lin to hurt or force herself. Lin told Gaia it was fine and they kissed. Lin didn’t feel anything really, maybe a little bit of happiness to have this intimate moment with someone again. For Gaia, she finally felt seen and thought Lin finally reciprocated her feelings.
For the next couple of months they were only kissing a couple of times and sleeping together (platonically you animals =w=) and Gaia felt happy. Lin on the other hand loved the comfort and felt, wanted. She felt like this was a safe place for her, that is until she found out she was pregnant- 💀
Lin was so upset, angry that she finally just got over the jerk that dumped her and she was pregnant. And with Gaia there it made everything more difficult.
Lin did the thing she thought was the best for the both of them and officially unofficially broke them up. Telling Gaia she couldn't handle relationships right now and told Gaia she wasn't the one she could settle for and that she may never get with anyone again.
It was safe to say Gaia was pretty broken seeing as this was her first every "relationship" and Lin straight up broke her heart. Gaia watched as Lin left her and Gaia could only sit there and watch. She didn't hold anything against Lin, she was just sad. It seemed like anyone she had ever loved always seemed to leave her.
Gaia gave up on dating, Lin disappeared from the public and from work and Gaia was now a skilled earthbender. No where as good as Lin or Toph but better than most.
By a couple of months, Toph and Katara brought a woman to the island and put it on the downlow, letting Gaia know that it was a secret and no one should know, not even Tenzin.
It was hours later that Gaia heard a cry of pain from a woman she definitely knew but couldn't put a finger on it.
At the breakfast table Gaia could hear the excited whispers between Katara and Toph and asked them who that woman was. Both the women seeing Gaia as a niece or a trusting family friend, they knew the girl was innocent and wouldn't do anything to hurt the family.
With excited whispers they told Gaia that Lin was pregnant and that she just had a baby. "The Beifong genes still run strong! We Beifong women only have girls!" Toph said like excitedly.
It took everything out of Gaia to not react and gave each of the women. She knew how hard it was on the women, each rooting on Tenzin and Lin to have a child and here the child was.
The next couple of days was torture on Gaia, the two women not knowing the relationship between Lin and Gaia so they didn't expect it. At least Katara did, Toph felt something from Gaia but didn't know if it were jealousy or what.
Throughout the months of the baby growing, Gaia gave the baby a little stuffed animal for her first birthday. Lin and Gaia got passed their little short lived romance but they never brought it up again.
Lin and Gaia had their little kisses here and there, Lin slightly hoping Gaia would pursue her again, hoping Gaia would ask her out officially even though she knew that would be wishful thinking.
Gaia enjoying their little get aways and little romances but knew she wouldn't be able to handle it if Lin kicked her away once more. She probably wouldn't be able to survive this time. Lin was her everything and loved her as if she were her soulmate only to have Lin crush her.
Gaia kept Lin at an arms length but loved her daughter with all of her heart. She absolutely adored baby Daiyu.
When they located the avatar in the south, (Daiyu being roughly 3 or 4 years old idk yet) Gaia knew that it would be the best for both her and Lin to take a break and find other things to do. Gaia promising Lin that she would always love her but knew Lin wasn't ready for romance, at least not now with a new baby.
Lin was hurt but understood where Gaia was coming from. Lin was hurt but she knew she probably deserved worse. Gaia gave her a kiss on her forehead their last day together and told Lin that she was worth the heart break and that Lin was perfect and that she never had to change who she was.
Before they parted, Gaia gave Lin a promise ring and wished both her and Daiyu well. Gaia was going to travel to the south and see just how crazy this new Avatar was.
If you want anymore stories between these two just comment below. I am always willing to write more, and if you want more fanart of these two do not worry because I plan to make more!!

The Book of Doors
@flashfictionfridayofficial
#FFF217 Portal Fiction
Avatar: Legend of Korra
996 words
With a kiss, Lin stepped through the door, closing it behind her.
Kya rested her hand against the panel, wishing she could just stand here, waiting for it to open again and let Lin walk back inside.
She sighed and let her forehead tilt against the door.
Another few hours won’t kill me, she told herself. She took a bracing breath and turned back inside to face a day of cleaning.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A dark brown or black rectangle with an amber glow in the middle. The text '#FFF217 Portal Fiction' is centered, in white.]
For no specific reason, her eyes lighted on a small red book she didn’t recognize, peeking out from the couch cushions where Lin had been sitting the night before.
Kya wrinkled her face in a mix of curiosity and confusion, wondering what manner of book Lin, of all people, would be stuffing in the couch cushions.
I know where she keeps her smut, after all, she smirked to herself.
She bent her knee under herself, fished the little book out, and settled in comfortably for a little light reading.
But there was no title page. No author. No publication information. Frowning in bemusement, Kya fanned the pages gently, only to realize that the pages were stiff and thick.
She closed the book again and examined the cover.
It felt old. The spine felt loose and flexible. There were a few stains from handling, but again, no indication of a title or author. She lifted the front cover gently, but only found a blank endpaper. Not even “Property of Lin Beifong” in her stylized, blocky script.
Kya flipped the first page over and was confronted by a door she’d recognize in any circumstance. It was the family’s own door to the one private residence on Air Temple Island. Aang’s personal mark was etched at eye level, just the way she, Bumi, and Tenzin had added it the night he had died. As if they would need it to remember him. Kya knew she wasn’t the only one to touch it before entering the residence.
The tears swam in her eyes as she started looking through the book. Plain brown doors were paired with decorative red-framed doors. She recognized the door to Katara’s home in the South and Izumi’s private quarters in the Fire Palace. But most of the doors were unfamiliar.
Some were photographs while others were cut from magazines. A few looked like Lin had sketched them from memory or imagination.
She laughed at the sketch of a person she suspected was Su, standing in a Zaofu doorway, but cut off at the shoulders.
“Head wouldn’t fit,” was scratched into the gutter of the page.
And then she came to a small, plain door with the number 524 on a plate drilled into the frame.
Unlike the others, this door was slightly ajar.
Her tears were back.
Hanging from the plate was the small red tassel Kya had added on a whim the first day she came home. The day after, well, after everything the day - and night - before had been.
And that was the smile Lin saw when she opened that door from the hallway.
“What’s got you so happy?” Lin asked with a smile.
Kya just turned the book to face her, watching for a reaction.
She got several. Surprise, embarrassment, and amused resignation were the three she’d remember.
“You found my ‘book of doors.’”
Kya wiggled a little to make more room as Lin divested herself of her boots and other small items. Kya stretched a leg along the back of the couch and lifted her arms.
Lin just shook her head and settled down inside Kya’s embrace.
Kya brought her arms down and closed the book back, but held it where they could both see it. “Would you tell me about this?”
Lin took a deep breath and relaxed a little more.
“I started this a little while after Tenzin.” As always, she paused before moving ahead with her story. She brushed her hand against Kya’s, and together, they opened the book to the temple residence door.
“I imagined what it would be like to open this door, except this time, I stayed with him. Did I give in and have children with him? Did we run away to get married and let Bumi have the airbender kids?” She snorted softly.
She paged through the book, touching some of the doors, but brushing right by others. “I started writing stories in my head about different lives I might have lived.” She pointed to one and explained, “In this one, your mother made friends with a spirit dragon.” She snorted again. “There’s even one where Pema divorces Tenzin and moves in with me.”
Kya couldn’t stifle her surprised laugh. “I don’t think I could tell her that, even if I wanted you to kill me.”
Lin shrugged against her. “She knows.”
Kya choked. “What?”
Lin shrugged again. “She caught me doodling one afternoon and just wouldn’t let it go. I thought she’d punch me or kick me out.”
Kya could barely feel her eyebrows anymore.
“But?”
Lin chuckled. “She kissed me on the cheek, said I would be her first choice, and left me there.”
Even from behind, Kya knew Lin was smirking.
They turned a few more pages in silence, until they came to the door Lin had just entered.
Kya rested her cheek against Lin’s head and hummed softly.
“This one is different,” she whispered.
Lin flexed so she could twist and face Kya.
“It’s the one where you really are here, with me, for as long as you want to stay.” Her face was still, and Kya couldn’t quite tell if she was serious or nervous.
In a small voice that managed to be both timid and confident, Lin continued, “I left the door open for you.”
Kya’s heart melted.
She set the book down in Lin’s lap so that she could bring both hands to caress Lin’s face. She kissed her.
“The only reason I’ll ever leave that door again is so I can come back to you.”
Special shout-outs to @slowdissolve and @frooopsen !

The Past Present Part 5
Lian drew a long breath as Xue helped her out of the boat and into the wooden ramp.
“You're gonna love it here, everything is calm but lively unlike the city.” The woman spoke with a soft smile as they walked.
Lian didn't comment, only acknowledged the words as she gazed at the town. It wasn't small, yet it was nothing in comparison to how big Republic City was. There were no big flashy sato’s or tall buildings that grazed the sky.
Tao laughed seeing Lian’s face and walked closer to her side. “I know this place is smaller and quite old fashioned from the city, but there's still modern things here too. Don't expect skyscrapers or anything in that magnitude though, that's a Republic City thing.”
Lian was about to step on the sand of her new home when she stopped. She sighed and stood in the wooden path for a moment in complete silence.
This was it, no turning back. No familiar faces, no Kya to run to. No Katara to heal her wounds, No Aang for advice. Not a single friend, but not a single enemy either. A soft hand grabbed hers and Lian looked at Xue.
“You're not alone, you'll never be alone again.” She said.
Lin was still battling her thoughts when Tao spoke.
“You see that cargo ship near the docks?”
“Yes” Lian responded, looking at it.
“It's going to Republic City. You can still go back, you can still take your old life back. Your friends and family. Maybe they will understand you and take care of you, maybe not.”
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath imagining it.
“But…” He continued. “If you choose to stay, We promise that we'll be by your side. We'll teach you everything we know and take you in as one of our own. It may be hard, maybe it'll be one of the hardest things you ever do. But we're here Lian, we are here for you. We'll be with you like we would with our own children.” He offered her a kind smile.
Lian lifted her head and looked at the town once more, this time with absolute conviction. “My life starts now, I don't ever want to hear or speak of what my life used to be. The past is the past and I will move forward.”
Tao and Xue smiled and continued forward, helping the young woman walk towards her new home.
________
Tenzin and Izumi stayed at the temple per their parents' requests. Someone had to stay home just in case things went bad and they needed to leave for Su and Toph’s safety. Mei, Azula, Tylee, and Suki also stayed and watched over the island as they waited.
The bison ride to the examiners office was eternal and slow. Toph’s leg was bouncing out of control as she waited patiently to get there. Katara held her hand and told her everything would be alright. Even though Sokka had been rude, Toph had made Aang call him so they could hear the news together. He sat at the end of the saddle with Kya and Suyin. Deep inside he knew something wasn’t right and a sinking feeling weighed heavily on Sokka’s chest.
When they landed, Toph was the first to get off the bison, almost stumbling. She started fast walking towards the front doors and pushed them open forcefully. There a young woman was waiting for them, everyone else appeared to have banished from the building.
“Toph Beifong?” The woman asked.
“Give it to me straight, I already know that's not her.” She said, crossing her arms.
“I’m Doctor Amara and I’m the examiner working on this case. I will answer your questions. I’m afraid I can’t just give you the answers in one go since they have to be explained first.”
At that moment the rest of the team arrived and stood behind Toph waiting for answers.
“It’s against protocol to have such a big group here since it could cause a riot.” The doctor said
It was quite an unusually big group. We had Kya, Katara, Aang, Sokka, Zuko, Bumi, Suyin and Toph, all calm and collected but anxious to know what their future would look like after the news unfolded.
“We will behave, I give you my word as the Avatar.” Aang spoke
The doctor nodded and drew a deep breath before taking her clipboard and reading some documents.
“The body has been identified and the DNA matches perfectly with the sample given earlier. Please take in consideration that we have done extensive testing and the results are one hundred percent accurate.”
“Just get to the point. Is it my daughter or not?” Toph said starting to get irritated.
Su stood behind her mother and next to Kya, the waterbender side hugging her and waiting.
Amara looked at Aang and then at Su, both of them anxiously waiting for the next words coming out of her mouth. The doctor wore a sad expression as her eyes immediately landed on Toph.
“It’s her. It’s Lin Beifong.”
Bumi left without a word after hearing the news, he broke into sobs when he was out of the room. There was a silence for a couple of seconds as Toph’s face contorted into devastation. She crumbled to the ground and yelled at the top of her lungs in agony at the news. Her pain was so great and her power so uncontrollable, that the ground started to break and the building started shaking.
Katara grabbed Toph as she herself held back tears, she never let go of her dear friend.
Aang was still shocked, he looked at the doctor with disbelief.
“Are you sure?” He asked.
The woman nodded. “I'm sorry avatar, but all the tests came back positive for her dna. Everything checks out. My condolences for your loss.” Those were her last words as she left the grieving family.
“My baby! No! No! No!” Toph kept yelling in pain as everything started sinking in.
Suyin started walking backwards, her face showing her horror. ‘I killed her- I killed my sister, this is all my fault!’ Her mind started to flood with thoughts of blame as she ran out of the building sobbing.
Kya just stood there with tears in her eyes. She was trying to wrap her head around everything but couldn't. How could this be? Her Best friend was dead and she couldn't do anything about it. She would never see her again. She would never hug or joke with Lin. Lin… she's gone. She didn't know what to do, if she should go to Toph and her mother or if she should follow Suyin and make sure she was safe. Aang beat her to it and started marching outside.
“Spirits why!” Toph yelled angrily. “Why Lin! Why?!”
Suddenly everything came down and Kya fell to the ground sobbing. She covered her mouth as she cried, her chest growing heavy. She felt someone pick her up and hold her and she looked up to find her uncle Zuko crying by her side.
“She's gone uncle-” She cried.
“I know” He held her tighter.
“She's gone…” Kya whispered.
Toph started hyperventilating and screaming to the point Katara was starting to worry she could strain herself, she kept trying to comfort and calm the grieving mother. It got to the point that Toph’s body gave up from the stress and she collapsed. She was still crying as Katara rubbed her back and stayed by her side.
Aang came back carrying a crying Suyin, Sokka and Bumi walked right behind him in a hurry. Kya letting go of her uncle and quickly stood up seeing her father’s worried look.
“We need to take them to the temple, the press got wind of it. I don't know which bastard told them, but they know it's Lin.” Aang said as he handed Su to Zuko and grabbed Toph.
Toph just cried weakly into Aang's shoulder as she was carried.
“It's okay. We are here for you.” Aang reassured as he carried her out.
After a few minutes of planning, the group exited to the roof and got on the bison. Toph regained some energy and started wailing again, which only distressed Suyin more and soon Kya and Katara were working to soothe the two Beifongs. Nothing was working and Toph just seemed to get more melancholic as the moments went on. Sokka couldn't bear to see such a disheartening scene, he grabbed a dart filled with shirshu saliva from his hunting pouch and stabbed Toph on the neck, the woman falling unconscious almost immediately.
“Sokka!” Katara yelled.
“She’s going to have a heart attack!” He yelled back
“Sokka you have no right to do that!” Aang yelled.
“She needed that! She's distressed!”
“She was just told her daughter died! How would you expect her to react?!” Zuko said in disbelief.
On the other hand, Suyin seemed to have calmed down not hearing Toph yawl anymore. She crawled next to her mother and hugged her sleeping body. She kept crying but it was slower and softer now, seeing Toph at peace gave her a sense of calmness.
“We are having a talk when we get home.” Aang said disappointed.
______
Azula was at the very front of the temple waiting for their arrival. Seeing the bison she called the others, something was wrong. The air seemed heavy and everything was rushed. They haven't been listening to the radio so they didn't know or had a clue about the news. They would find out soon unfortunately.
When the bison touched ground and Aang carried an unconscious Toph in his arms Suki started running towards them concerned.
“What's going-”
“It's Lin, the body's hers.” Aang said interrupting Azula.
Azula’s usual cold demeanor broke in an instant and tears formed in her eyes. “No…” She whispered.
Katara carried Su and followed Aang to their bedroom where they settled the two in the bed. That's when Aang finally allowed himself to break. He walked to the middle of the sparring grounds and unleashed the most violent act of bending, letting his grief and frustration show in a safe space away from the others. He destroyed the grounds going into the Avatar State. Aang roared and white flames came from his mouth. He cursed and shouted till he felt weak. As he cried he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“I'm here friend.” Zuko said as he helped Aang to his feet and hugged him.
“I'm here.”
_____
Katara had let go too, she was like a second mother to Lin and the loss had broken and shattered her greatly. Tylee and Suki consoled her as Mei and Azula tried to digest the loss.
Lin was a very important person in their lives, especially to Azula who had named Lin her favorite niece. Lin was powerful and disciplined like her, something she always admired. Azula wondered if she had been there for her more, maybe she would still be with them.
Izumi, Bumi and Tenzin were consoling Kya who had been sobbing nonstop after the loss of her best friend. She was the closest person to Lin and she felt she had let her down. She blamed herself for not stopping Lin and not seeing the signs that day.
“If I had seen the signs! If I had paid attention!” Kya said between sobs.
“You couldn't have known!” Izumi said, whipping Kya’s tears and rubbing her back.
“I was supposed to know! I was her best friend!” She said trying to make sense of this act.
“You're not a mind reader Kya, no one would've guessed she would be capable of something like this.” Tenzin tried to reason.
“Someone is to blame for this!” Kya yelled.
“Maybe, but right now it's not the time to shift blame. We have to stick together like the family we are.” Bumi said sitting next to Kya.
“She's gone Bums, my Linny, she's dead.” Kya cried softly.
Bumi held his sister close as the day continued. It only seemed to get more painful as time went on.

Grayson & Kya, with a touch of KyaLin
Based on that crossover idea I had, in which Kya somehow ends up in Piltover, where she is stuck for a while until she finds a way back home. Grayson took her in and feelings are happening...
Kya wasn’t surprised when she finally found Grayson in the firing booth at the enforcers’ headquarters. The Sheriff stood in her stall, steady stance, muscles flexed in her strong arms, and holding the gun in a sure grip.
She still had her troubles in understanding the fascination the people of this world had with these firearms. They were loud, unhandy and most of them left an odd stench in the air. But worst of all, they caused damage like Kya had barely seen before. During the past months that she had been living in Piltover, she had to treat quite a few gunshot wounds and even had to watch one of them die from the injury, bleeding out in the clinic’s theatre and all Kya could do was watch. If only she could’ve used her bending… but they might shoot her if she did.
Grayson fired another round of ammunition at her target. Each of them hitting the centre ring easily and despite her growing wariness of guns, Kya couldn’t help but be reminded of watching Lin practising her bending moves at the gym of Republic City’s precinct. The thought left a deep ache in her chest.
“What are you doing here?” Grayson asked in her raspy voice, while she lowered her gun to recharge it. It was remarkable that she had noticed Kya without even once turning around and those thick earmuffs on. Almost as if she had felt her standing there in the doorway. Just like Lin…
Kya shook her head, catching herself before she could get lost in her homesickness. Grayson resumed her stance again, and Kya lifted her hands to cover her own ears as she slowly took one step after another towards Grayson’s booth, while the latter kept shooting at her target.
“I was looking for you.” Kya used the crushing silence that instantly followed a series of close range gunshots. Grayson didn’t move a muscle even though she surely knew that Kya was standing right behind her by then.
“Hey,” Kya put a hand onto Grayson’s back, right between the shoulder blades. The Sheriff tensed noticeably at the touch and Kya removed her hand again, feeling guilty.
“Please, don’t,” Grayson muttered as she put the gun into her holster and finally removed her earmuffs.
“I’m sorry,” Kya whispered in reply.
Grayson turned around, her face looked as tense as the muscles in her back had felt and the emotions in her eyes were almost overwhelming.
Kya gulped, forcing herself not to look away. “For everything,” she continued, still speaking quietly.
They stood there for mere moments, staring at each other, struggling with their feelings and thoughts, until eventually, Grayson broke the silence. She rarely seemed able to hold out tension, she seemed to have that natural urge to resolve it, at least Kya had noticed that about her. So unlike Lin, she mused.
“I owe you an apology as well,” Grayson spoke, her voice back to the usual gentleness Kya had come to associate with her. “Yes, I do,” she insisted when Kya began shaking her head.
“There’s no–”
“Yes. I shouldn’t have kissed you.”
Kya didn’t say anything.
“I know how you feel… about her and me, and I respect that. It was… I got weak, I guess. And I’m sorry for that, Kya.”
Kya wanted to cry. She wanted to fling her arms around Grayson and tell her how gorgeous she was and how easy it would be for Kya to just fall in love with her. But Kya’s heart was at home. With Lin. Oh, how she missed Lin! Lin, who would’ve probably crushed Grayson’s gun by now if she were here too. Lin, who was in Kya’s thoughts every hour of every day. She could never love someone else.
“Here,” Grayson held out a handkerchief and Kya took it silently, not trusting her voice.
The soft fabric smelt so intensely of Grayson that it promptly caused another flood of tears to fall out of Kya’s eyes. Kya had never met someone like Grayson before. She was as gentle as a spirit and as strong as a pillar, and never shy to hide behind a mask. It was impossible not to feel anything for her. It was cruel.
“Thanks,” Kya sniffed when she dared remove the handkerchief from her face. Her eyes briefly darted to Grayson’s, which was a mistake. The deep and vulnerable look that rested on her was too much. Kya’s gaze dropped again and Grayson turned away, clearly aware of how much she unsettled Kya.
“Will you be home for dinner?” Kya asked, trying to force her voice to sound as natural as possible.
Grayson didn’t respond at first. She was holding her gun in her hands again, seemingly studying it. “Do you want me to?”
Kya pondered the question. “Yes,” she concluded. “I could make us something nice.”
Grayson nodded, but once again not turning to look at Kya. “I’ll be there at 1900,” she said and put the earmuffs on again.
Smiling softly at Grayson’s back, Kya pressed the kerchief to her chest, and allowed another couple of tears to freely travel down her cheeks. One day you’ll find the one who can love as much as you deserve.

MY MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
Mako was living his absolute worst nightmare.
Stuck aboard an airship with his two exes, his brother, his boss, and his boss’ ex with no opening window to jump out of?
The day was definitely not in his favor.
Every hour seemed to be the same.
Radio a call..hear about a new airbender..find the map..use the map..go to the town..get kicked out of the town..return to the beginning.
While Mako did love having a routine—he was bored of this one.
The only thing that made his day even slightly interesting was Y/N.
It wasn’t long ago when he had met the water tribe girl. They’d first spoken during the Glacier Spirits Festival in the Southern Water Tribe.
He had been introduced to her mother, Kya, through Bolin. His younger brother was so starstruck by Avatar Aang’s only daughter, that he couldn’t help but drag along her own daughter with him for the entirety of the festival.
Bolin spent the rest of the night proudly walking alongside the teenage girl, who had to have been at least two to three years older than him.
He went around and showed her off to all of their friends from Republic City, even if they already knew her.
“Don’t make a show of it, but I know the Avatar’s granddaughter. You don’t need to be wowed or anything, it’s no big deal.”
“Bolin, I’m literally her uncle.”
Mako was one of the very last people to meet the infamous Y/N.
It was right after his argument with Korra about the situation between her father and Unalaq. His emotions were all over the place, confusion and annoyance dominated his mood.
But all of his anger dissolved with one look at her smile.
It was at that moment when Mako decided that Y/N had a gift.
She could lift someone’s spirit with a single glance. Her eyes always glowed with positivity and her soul was the purest one he had ever come across.
Y/N could be compared to the rising sun. Just by existing, she radiated more light and goodness than the greatest man on Earth could ever achieve.
It had been a very brief introduction.
“Mako, my man!” Bolin slapped his palm over the firebender’s shoulder, a cheesy side smile pointed at the teenage girl standing next to him.
“This is my good friend, Y/N. Y/N meet my big bro!”
Y/N beamed, her teeth sparkling under the moonlight. She held out her hand in a friendly manner and looked straight into Mako’s eyes, unafraid of making eye contact.
“It’s nice to meet you, Mako.” She spoke whilst shaking his hand. “I’ve only known Bolin for an hour and I feel like I already know everything about you.”
Mako groaned in embarrassment. He was always flattered by how much Bolin looked up to him, but sometimes his little brother went a little too far.
“You had an hour? Let me guess..” Mako pointedly looked at Bolin, shaking his head in amusement. “He must’ve told you our entire life story by now.”
When she laughed at his blunt attempt at a joke, Mako’s heart soared right then and there.
It was like the fire inside of him had been ignited with gasoline. but instead of her water smothering his flames..they made the grow. Made them stronger.
Though Mako hadn’t realized these lurching feelings at the time. He did have a girlfriend after all, and he liked to think he would never intentionally cheat on her.
That didn’t stop him from admiring her from afar.
Platonically of course.
There weren’t many moments after the festival where Mako found himself alone with Y/N.
He had chosen to follow Korra to open the spirit portals and Y/N went off to tour the air temples with her extended family—and if he was being honest, he hadn’t had much time to think about her between fighting off evil spirits and breaking up with his girlfriend.
It wasn’t until after Team Avatar defeated Unalaq and Vaatu, that Mako’s mind returned to his unresolved and unrealized feelings.
With the spirit portals open, the world was new again.
Thousands of people were traveling, discovering places they never knew existed, and migrating to different nations.
Luckily for Mako, Y/N had been one of those people.
It had taken her about a week to move into her apartment in Republic City.
Her flat was quaint but cosy. It had views overlooking the busy downtown and bustling people, and she had easy access to stores and shops in the neighborhood.
There was nothing wrong with her new home, but it wasn’t like the South. In fact, it was nothing like the South.
Y/N missed her friends and colleagues. She missed the chilly wind that would slice through the air and freeze her cheekbones. She missed the animals and the overall energy that the South had.
But she was open to new beginnings and new friends—and her open mindset was exactly what led her to join her family and Team Avatar on the search for new airbenders.
Which is right where Mako had left off.
The airship was dreadful, dreary, and just plain boring.
His main source of entertainment was watching a cloud disappear from his view, and then preceding to find another one for his eyes to chase.
Luckily for him, Y/N was also bored out of her mind. She had no one to talk to on the ship.
Korra? Tempting, but intimidating.
Asami? Sure if Y/N was less hippy and more business mogul.
Bolin? Yeah, she didn’t want to go down that path again.
Lin? No way.
Her actual family members? Good option—but Tenzin was boring and all Jinora did was read old scrolls.
Y/N was at a loss, and the only person that seemed remotely interesting was the brooding firebender staring out of the window.
When she approached him, Mako was at a loss for words.
He had been thinking about this moment for awhile now, and had a pun filled pick-up line ready to go, but when it came down to crunch time, he stalled.
“Hey,” Y/N smiled, gesturing to the seat next to Mako on the iron bench. “Mind if I sit?”
Mako’s mouth opened to respond, but no words came out of his mouth. He sat there like a fish out of water, nodding his head silently.
Y/N shrugged her shoulders and happily sat next to the nineteen year old.
With her being so close in proximity, Mako’s brain flashed exe.error messages through his thoughts.
They sat in a comfortable, yet also awkward silence for a long time.
Every time Mako tried to get a word out, he stumbled. His nerves overcame his speech, preventing him from sounding the least bit cool.
Scratch that. They prevented him from sounding like an actual person and not a toddler that just learned how to speak.
After what felt like generations, Mako was saved by none other than his ex-girlfriends.
“We just landed,” Korra said, waving to the former probender and his companion. A confused look flashed across her face at the sight of them so close yet so uncomfortable.
Asami then poked her head around the corner, coming into view. “Are you guys going to come out or what?”
Y/N was the first to jump up, nodding her head enthusiastically.
She nearly sprinted to the exit—not because she wanted to get away from her encounter with Mako, she was just really excited to meet new people.
Mako heaved a deep sigh when she was completely out the door and out of earshot. It felt like he could finally breathe again without the stress of being in her presence.
“You like her?” Korra crossed her arms over one another, leaning against the wall as Asami stood by her side.
“What?” Mako stuttered, his face flooding with hues of red and pink.
“Why would you say that?”
“No Way!”
“I don’t even know what you’re talking about!”
Korra and Asami loudly laughed at Mako’s rambling, while they had both been hurt by his actions in the past, they had come to forgive him—and they wanted nothing more than for him to find his special someone.
“Okay, then.” Korra shrugged, pulling Asami out of the room with her, “Whatever you say, Mako.”
Mako dropped his face into his hands, pulling at his hair as he mentally beat himself up.
“But if it matters,” he looked up to see Korra still standing at the door. A genuine smile shown on her face.
“I think you two would be perfect together.”
As Korra finally left him to himself, Mako couldn’t help but think about how lucky he was to have a friend like her.
She was everything he didn’t need in a relationship, but everything he could’ve ever wanted in a friendship.
Eventually, Mako did manage to force himself off of the airship. He helped with the little show the airbenders put on to influence others to join the nomads and even fought a few bad guys while he was at it.
He was finally having a good day, until the little punk tried to steal his wallet.
“Wait,” he ordered, pulling Kai back by the neck of his shirt. Mako held out his hand expectantly and gave the younger boy a hard look.
“I think you might have something of mine.”
Kai smiled sheepishly before pulling out the firebender’s stolen goods.
“It must’ve fallen into my pocket, my bad.”
Mako glared at the new airbender. The stare he was giving Kai was so cold, it could intimidate a pack of polar bear dogs.
“Now listen here,” he bent down to Kai’s level. His tangerine eyes meeting Kai’s green ones. “I know your game. I used to be the master at it, actually—and let me tell you that it gets you absolutely nowhere.”
Mako sighed, he already saw so much of himself in the kid that he didn’t want him to go down the same hard path that he did.
“All I want is the best for you, kid.” He patted Kai on the shoulder before sending him off to join Jinora on the ship. “Don’t mess up this opportunity.”
There were times where Mako enjoyed being the big bad cop or the authoritarian figure, but this was not one of those times.
He just wanted Kai to have the best life he possibly could.
The life he had always wanted for himself.
Unbeknownst to Mako, his secret crush had witnessed the whole ordeal.
His pure-hearted intentions touched Y/N. Acts of kindness and wellbeing always found their way into her heart, and his act of good caught her attention in a very positive way.
It caught her attention enough, that she found herself standing right behind him.
“That was really sweet what you said back there.” She told Mako, who jumped in surprise at her soft voice.
“Yeah, I tried. I’ve been where he is before. I know how it ends.”
Mako felt much more comfortable now that Y/N had started the conversation. He wasn’t afraid to give his thoughts knowing that she was the one who wanted to talk to him.
Y/N let out a low breath. Her hair willowed in the breeze, her eyes shining under the sunlight. She looked like a lost spirit.
A beautiful lost spirit, Mako thought.
“I try, too.” She whispered to him. Mako could barely hear her voice, it was so faint.
“Sometimes being there for everyone else has its downfall.” Y/N’s sparkling eyes turned dim, sadness drowned her usually uplifting features.
“I spend all my energy making sure that everyone I love is happy, but then there’s never anyone looking out for me, you know?”
Mako did know.
He knew exactly how she was feeling. He’d raised Bolin since they were children.
If anyone knew the pressures of holding onto another person’s burdens, it was Mako.
“I’ve noticed that,” Mako said, stepping closer to the girl. He could see that her eyes were welling with tears, all he wanted to do was wrap his arms around her and make all the negative energy go away.
So that’s exactly what he did.
Y/N melted into Mako’s embrace. She felt his body radiate heat, he warmed not only her body, but her heart in an instant.
“I see you, with Tenzin’s kids.” Mako ran his hand down her back, comforting Y/N as best he could. “They look up to you more than they do anyone else. You’re really amazing, Y/N. I’m surprised you don’t hear it more often.”
Right then and there, Y/N realized exactly what she needed in her life—and it was Mako.
If she was being honest with herself, he hadn’t exactly caught her eye before.
She thought he was somewhat bland at the Glacier Spirits Festival and the whole double girlfriend situation definitely didn’t spark her interest in the firebender, but now here she was..
Crying in his arms, confessing her insecurities, and feeling heard.
She had never felt heard before.
“I think you’re really amazing.” Mako blurted out.
He cringed at his confession, hoping that she didn’t take it the wrong way. If there even was a wrong way to take it.
Mako felt Y/N grow still in his arms. His heart pounded in anticipation for what her next words would be.
To his surprise she pulled away..
Before pressing a deep kiss to his lips.
Mako immediately responded. His mouth moved languidly with hers, connecting in the most perfect way, as if they were meant to be.
His entire body nearly combusted. Her bright spirit combining with his fiery one.
Mako felt like sunshine was running through his veins.
She pulled away, giving him one last chaste kiss.
“I think you’re amazing, too.”

Fluffy 5
NSFW 24
👉🏻👈🏻
This turned out a lot softer than I intended ... I'm just an idiot for soft kyalin so I'm sorry
Fluffy 5. "I might have slept with your robe when you were gone." and NSFW 24. "Don't talk, just spread your legs."
Lin didn't normally leave Republic City. The city needed her just like anyone needed to breathe, when she left, everything seemed to stop somehow. However, the Creeping Crystals were crossing out of the city, which led Lin to stay on an operation for 3 long days. Sleeping in inns, stakeouts and conversations in walk talks. In the end it turned out that the smuggling was just jewelry and not weapons like Lin thought. No less worrying, but even better than triads being over-armed.
When she opens the door to her apartment in the night of the fourth day out, after an afternoon of reading every report of each stolen jewel, she can only breathe relieved by the smell of home. She streches her neck and bends the metal of her belt and boots so that they connect with the wardrobe in the living room and then the top of her uniform. Her bare feet on the cold stone of the apartment are a blessing, Lin hated shoes so much she couldn't even put it into words. The police chief stretches out her arms while looking at her apartment, there are no lights on, or anything in the kitchen. Just dark green curtains and black leather furniture scattered around the living room. Kya was probably on the air temple island while she was out of town. She didn't blame her, the apartment could be a little creppy for someone from the water tribe alone.
A decent bath and her bed would be great. These are the only things that cross Lin's mind as her steps lead her to the main bedroom.
She smells her before she sees her. Kya smells like the ocean itself and a sweet touch, like honey. It was the smell that soothed Lin's nerves and she would recognize it anywhere. Just her smell, entering her nostrils, leaving her head confused.
She pushed the door, slowly and then entered with her body. She rested her eyes on the bed and immediately a pathetic smile took her mouth, a smile no one will ever see, except for her. Kya was sprawled on the big bed, white hair contrasting perfectly with the black silk sheets, she was wearing ... Lin's robe? The earthbender frowned, but she had to admit that the gold and green fabric looked beautiful on Kya's chocolate skin. One of her legs badly covered, the way the fabric seemed to embrace her shape so well. She was beautiful dressed in anything, including nothing. The police chief came over to brush her hair out of her face before placing a kiss on her hot forehead. The waterbender moves under her touch, but she doesn't wake up and Lin breathes in her scent once more before walking to the bathroom.
"Lin?" The voice stops her halfway. Kya is moving on the sheets. Lin turns around and there is an affectionate smile on her mouth when her eyes meet the waterbender's, they seem to glow blue even in the half-darkness of the room. That gleam in Lin's eyes ... It only appeared for Kya.
"Hey, thief." The healer frowns for a brief moment. Lin points to what she is wearing and her eyes fall on her body. Kya laughs.
"Ah this." She runs her fingers along the tips. "I might have slept with your robe when you were gone." Lin's eyebrows become more pronounced as she approaches the bed. Her eyes never left Kya's, not even for a second.
"Did you sleep here? All these days?" Kya nodded, getting on her knees on the bed to crawl to the edge. Her hands almost instinctively wrapped around Lin's waist, bringing her close enough until there was no distance between their bodies.
"Why?" Lin's question sounds low as the waterbender looks her in the eye. Fun shining on hers.
"It smells like you here." She replies simply, playing with Lin's top hem. Fingers up and down the defined muscles of the other woman's abdomen.
"And you decided to steal my robe because it smells like me too. Am I right?" Kya holds her lower lip between her teeth before nodding. Her hands go up to fingering Lin's shoulders and the earthbender closes her eyes, just feeling her hands work on her. It was good to be home.
"I hope it doesn't get me in trouble with my police chief." Lin's eyes seem to light up and Kya has to hold on to not involve her.
"The sentence for stealing is 1 month in prison or bail." A sigh leaves Kya's mouth as she watches that sharp jaw. It's so easy for Lin to get her out of any other thought than just her.
"What about the operation?" The waterbender's tone is low, as if the slightest disturbance could break that moment.
"It went well." Lin bent her head to the touch of her fingers on her cheek. "Smuggling jewelry. We managed to recover most of them." The healer purrs in agreement and the sound makes Lin's legs fail a little weak. Kya knows that.
"My girlfriend is so important." She murmurs, her fingers caressing that spot on the back of Lin's neck that makes her a little unsteady. The earthbender's hands wrap her, calluses and muscles against the smooth fabric of the robe. The word girlfriend still echoes in police chief's head, she likes to hear that word, she loves when Kya calls her that. "It's so sexy." She leans over, just enough to meet Lin's neck with her mouth, a more than delicate kiss is placed there and Lin shudders.
It's been 5 days. She has an excuse.
Kya's smell. Kya's breasts pressed against her chest. The way Kya's lips feel when they touch her skin. It's too much. Lin was overstimulated with just the simplest things. It was so simple for Kya. It always have been.
Kya's lips hover over hers, as if she is daring her to kiss her first. This woman ... Lin takes a deep breath. Trying to get air into the brain, it doesn't work.
"I missed you, you know?" Kya slides the index finger along the curve of Lin's nose, the slightly parted lips and then through the firm jaw. "I slept in this robe thinking it was you ... But then I woke up and you weren't there." She pouts and Lin can only say it’s adorable.
"I missed you too." She whispers. More than she could put into words. She only thought about Kya when she was away, every smile, every word, every curve her body made. The waterbender's eyes shine and it looks like Lin just gave her the best gift she ever received.
"So why aren't you kissing me yet, chief?" The smile that rises at the corners of her mouth is provocative, slightly mocking. She knows what that kind of smile does to Lin's body. She knows that the earthbender is as hungry for her touch as she has never been for anything else in the world.
She ponders for a minute. Just a minute. And then she leans down, her lips falling on Kya's as if it's the first time she's done this. Her mouth felt like a beautiful paradise to lose, it was warm, inviting and with a sweet taste. She seemed to fit so well against her body. There was no one like Kya.
Lin didn't hesitate before sliding her tongue into her lips and the waterbender murmured in approval. The sound sent a painful shiver down the back of Lin's spine and she tightened her arms around the healer's body, feeling her long fingers press the pulse points on her neck, just slightly, just enough for the exact amount of blood disappear and Lin's mind swam.
The earthbender bent down a little to find the hem of the robe, running her fingers up Kya's thighs, trying to find another piece of fabric. She grabbed the waterbender's hip with her fingers and she would have widened her eyes ... Because there was nothing there.
Kya ... Kya was wearing her robe. And only her robe. The blood started to rise to Lin's head very quickly, not even Kya's small squeeze in her throat preventing her senses from becoming completely alert. The waterbender separated her mouth just enough to chuckle.
"You didn't think that sleeping was the only thing I did with this robe, did you?" The image of Kya with her fingers tightened inside her, red cheeks, hardened breasts and sheets stained with her fluids. Lin's fingers started to shake around Kya's hips in sheer anticipation. "I moaned your name." She whispered, her voice lifting every hair on the back of Lin's neck and forcing her to close her eyes. "I moaned your name every night, Lin." She drags her name on her tongue, as if she were actually moaning and the earthbender's inner muscles tighten. Spirits. "You know ..." Lin stops her from speaking, her hands push Kya, the movement is slow, but the grip is strong enough to make the waterbender's body shiver.
"Don't talk, just spread your legs." Her voice is hoarse, her chest rises and falls with deep breaths and the knowledge that this is for her. Lin is panting just at the thought of fucking her. Kya's fingers are unstable when she unties the robe's belt to reveal the skin beneath it. Lin's eyes are bright, bright green, but now they look darker than usual. They are obscure. Kya would be afraid of that look if she wasn't just focused on making her feel good.
Lin loved Kya's thighs. Of course she loved the whole waterbender's body, but her thighs ... Those thighs were the earthbender's own paradise. Her fingers gently slide over her skin, feeling the soft heat that Kya radiates. She would spend a life just worshiping Kya's body, for sure.
The waterbender opens her legs for her almost instinctively and Lin swallows.
"Fuck." She whispers.
"I think that is precisely the point." The healer replies, even though Lin's voice saying "fuck" makes her internal muscles tighten up hard enough to make her start panting. The earthbender raises an eyebrow before sliding her fingers through her. Kya shakes. A smirk goes up into Lin's mouth as she brings her own fingers to her mouth, Kya's taste. She avoids shaking on her own.
It tastes so good.
"Lin." It's just her name. But the way Kya says it, the way her chest is already rising and falling with difficulty, her cheeks slightly flushed. Lin wants to make her come so much now it hurts.
She leans over, just enough to put an indecent kiss on Kya's mouth. The other woman leans towards her, as if she needed her touch as much as Lin needed to touch her. The police chief's lips travel down her chest, through her ribs, her stomach, to the point she wanted. She looked at the waterbender, before sinking her fingers into her thighs and her mouth falling on her.
It's Lin's name that fell out of Kya's mouth, again. Her hips lifted from the bed with the simple touch of Lin's lips against her. The earthbender appreciates the power she has over her, she slides her tongue over her again and that's when she feels the sting on her scalp. Kya's fingers sinking into her hair. The thought she needed it so much, she needed so badly for her to make her come... Lin pulled a hand away to sink two fingers on her.
Kya cursed out loud and it made Lin mumble as she opened her mouth to suck on her. Her legs are shaking around her, pride is shining in Lin her, but also need. She pulls her fingers to slip them again, the movements are calculated and smooth. Just enough to maker her want more.
The waterbender is panting. Just the image of Lin between her legs, her mouth on her, her fingers on her. It's devotion. She thinks. It must be devotion. Her fingers tighten against her head.
"Lin." She moans again, she is asking. Lin knows. She know every tone of Kya's voice, she knows when she wants it deeper and stronger even when she doesn't say it.
Lin's fingers increase the intensity of the thrusts, she knows Kya will not need much. It's been 5 days.
She looks up. Her mouth still wrapped around her bundle of nerves, fingers sunk into her. Just her eyes. It's everything the waterbender needs. She feels all the heat build up in her belly and then release. Kya's head drops to the nearest pillow when the orgasm hits her hard enough to make her senses unstable. Lin moved her fingers a few more times, just to prolong her pleasure. She puts a gentle kiss in her inner thighs before lifting herself over her body, kissing her belly and between her breasts and then returning to her eyes. It's devotion.
Kya touches her face, fingers gently pulling her by the cheeks to her lips. Her own taste is in Lin's mouth makes her murmur on the earthbender's lips, opening her mouth to taste her even more.
She is not stronger, but it's easy to push Lin by the shoulders to mount her hips because she's not fighting. She would never fight against Kya's touch again.
"You just made a thief come, chief Beifong." Lin's eyes light up and Kya laughs when she leans over to her, her mouth hovering over her lips. "Let's see if I can reduce my sentence."

She was so tired.
Not just from the day she just had. Not because her week had seemed as if it would never end. She was tired to her very soul.
She hadn’t always been so cold. She was always guarded, yes. She kept her walls high and strong but there was a time when she had let a small circle of people inside those walls. But then something shifted and everything changed. She threw everyone out and decided it was safer to keep them that way. Letting people in would always eventually lead to her getting hurt again.
This served her well for many years. She had relationships here and there but they never meant anything, not really. And she was content enough. Or at least that’s what she told herself at night when the unwanted, traitorous thoughts plagued her.
She knew some of those people who had once been allowed past her defenses wanted to be let in again. They would try every once in a while, acting as if no time had passed from when they were younger. But even they gave up eventually. She couldn’t blame them. Marriages, babies, and careers were all very important things of value.
They all moved on from her.
But then everything changed again.
In more ways than she realized, the Avatar changed Lin’s life in ways she never expected. She had spent decades keeping everyone she knew at an arm’s length but then Korra blazed into her city and she suddenly found herself being forced to face her own past.
She wasn’t sure when it happened but she was actually friends with Tenzin again. There was still a dull ache in her heart if she thought too much about things that would never be, but they were different people than they were all those years ago. And she was loathe to admit it, but she would go the ends of the earth for his children. Even Meelo.
She was actually on speaking terms with Su. Su. She not only had her sister back but she had relationships with her niece and nephews. Things were still complicated with her mother but they had made progress and if Lin didn’t screw everything up again maybe they could move on from their past.
Bumi was the only one who ever seemed to truly understand Lin. It was nice to have him as a more active part of her life again. Even if he was an insufferable idiot most of the time.
And then there was Kya.
 Her Kya.
Lin wasn’t sure if it was because she was older and more mature or if she just had been so fixated on Tenzin and the thought of failing Aang, that she just didn’t notice how amazing Kya truly was. Kya had breezed through Republic City many times over the years, often causing some sort of scene that created more work for Lin. But Kya always checked in on Lin. No matter what.
Lin didn’t even realize this until years later. Kya was the only one who actually asked how Lin was doing. No ulterior motives, not out of obligation, but because she sincerely cared about her. She was the only constant in Lin’s life that wasn’t tainted by the memories of her past.
It had happened rather subtly, their relationship. Well, subtly enough after Lin stammered through an exhaustion induced declaration of love for Kya at her bedside when Zaheer had nearly killed them both. Lin had thought Kya was unconscious for her little confession until the waterbender showed up in Republic City 6 months later to tell Lin she felt the same way.
It was awkward and sometimes tense at first as Lin learned to let someone get close to her again and Kya worked through her reflex of running away when things got serious. The fact that they had known each other since childhood didn’t help either, because it was impossible to hide your past from someone who lived it with you.
And now she was here. Walking up the stairs of her apartment knowing there was someone waiting for her there that loved her. As Lin walked through the door to the apartment, her exhaustion and tension cloying in her gut, she decided to let her walls down completely for the woman she loved. It was time to move on from the past.
Kya was on the couch, reading a letter from her mother by the looks of the handwriting. Lin went through her usual routine, walking to the bedroom to take off her uniform and change into clean clothes.
But instead of going to the kitchen for food, she quietly walked around the couch and sat down next to Kya, pulling her legs up and resting her head against Kya’s warm shoulder. She felt the shift in Kya’s demeanor as she stopped reading the letter.
“Everything okay, Lin?”
Her voice had a twinge of concern in it and Lin could feel her face reddening with mild embarrassment.
“Yeah.”
Kya’s silence was louder than anything else she could have said.  Lin let out a slight sigh, pulling Kya’s arm up and draping it around her as she nestled closer.
“Just hold me, Kya.”
Kya still didn’t speak but she did shift her position so they were both more comfortable, her arm pulling Lin closer.
“You’re making me nervous, Lin. What’s wrong?”
What’s wrong… it echoed through Lin as she went over everything that had ever gone wrong in her life, everything that lead to the person she was now. What a loaded question. She sighed again and pulled away enough to look Kya in the eye.
“I promise nothing’s wrong. I just… I… I’ve decided I want to hug you more.”
Her cheeks got warm again at the way the absurd sounding sentence managed to weasel its way from her mouth. She pulled away from Kya completely and buried her face in her hands. She had always been lousy at discussing her own feelings but this was just sad. Kya, to her testament, didn’t burst out laughing but Lin didn’t miss the slight twitch of the corners of her mouth as her face softened.
She didn’t say anything which was a small blessing as Lin slowly lowered her hands. Kya lifted her arm and made a small movement with her head, beckoning Lin to come closer.
And she did.
Putting aside any sense of discomfort, Lin allowed herself to melt into Kya’s side, letting out a long breath and closing her eyes.
“I thought you weren’t a cuddler.”
Lin smiled, flicking her wrist so a small piece of stone she had brought in on her boots hit Kya in the back of the head. She let out a small, indignant yelp, but before she could retaliate Lin wrapped her arms around her middle and squeezed her gently.
“People can change, Kya.”
Kya kissed the top of Lin’s head, resting her cheek against her. She started to hum softly, a gentle tune Lin recognized but couldn’t quite place. She felt her body relax, the steady beating of Kya’s heart syncing with her own.
 People can change.
 I can change.

angstpril day fourteen: nightmares
CW: reliving trauma, panic attack, swearing
fic under the cut
Cold, everything was so cold. Her body felt heavy as she was dragged from a small guarded room to the pavilion outside. She was forced onto her knees, her hands pulled tightly behind her back.
She could hear every tiny movement. Her head hung low as she listened to the crashing of waves in the distance, the rustling of leaves in the wind, the occasional call of birds. Soft footsteps all around her. She’d have said was almost a beautiful scene had she not known better.
She listened, and she waited. She knew what was coming. It was the same every time, the bliss before the nightmare really began.
His footsteps were heavier than the others’, his clothes looser and louder. The wind whipped his robes as he walked up behind her, taking his sweet, sweet time moving to stand before her. He placed a finger under her chin and forced her head up, the air around them suddenly stilling.
She stared up at him, glaring at his emotionless mask and hollow eyes.
Now it’ll happen, she thought to herself.
That’s how it always went.
But something was different tonight.
As she watched him, he started to change. His body changed first, taking a form all too familiar to her, before his mask fell to the ground revealing his face.
And instead of Amon standing there, it was her mother.
“I couldn’t be more disappointed,” Toph said, staring coldly down at Lin.
“You’ve failed me. You’ve failed everyone.”
Lin closed her eyes, expecting tears to fall. None came. When she opened her eyes again, it was no longer her mother in front of her, but Kya.
“I really did love you, you know. But this time,” Kya paused and everything around them changed.
Suddenly the Air Temple was gone and they were on the beach on ember island, their friends laughing loudly in the distance. Kya’s hair was brown again, her face younger and smooth. She still stood above Lin, lifting her chin with a single finger.
“This time,” Kya repeated, the landscape around them changing again.
Now they were in the middle of a ballroom, masked faces twirling gracefully around them. The lights dimmed suddenly, plunging them into darkness.
“This time,” She said one last time, the air temple behind her returning and the cold biting down to Lin’s bones.
“You’ve gone too far,” Kya released Lin’s chin and walked around to stand behind her.
When a hand reached down and yanked her head back, it was Amon looking down at her again. His icy hand gripped her neck while he stared blankly down at her, raising his other hand above her. He stretched out his thumb and brought it quickly down towards her forehead. She squeezed her eyes shut, dreading the sensation that was about to rip through her body.
She sat bolt upright, breathing heavily and covered in sweat. She glanced to her left to see Kya sleeping peacefully. Her vision blurred with tears and she tried to stifle a sob, pushing herself gently out of bed. She made her way to the bathroom as quietly as she could, not wanting to wake Kya. She closed the door behind her and turned on the light, hunching over the sink.
Her hands gripped the edge of the sink tightly as sobs shook her shoulders. She’d tried to calm herself down and almost managed to stop crying several times, but bits of the nightmare rushed back and she broke down all over again. It was just before she started sobbing again that she heard a knock on the door.
“Shit,” She muttered before opening it, looking up at Kya with red and puffy eyes.
“I’m so sorry, I tried not to wake you up,” Her voice broke and she took in a shaky breath, her vision blurring with tears again.
“Shh, it’s alright,” Kya said, pulling Lin into her arms.
Kya held Lin until her sobs quieted, stroking her hair and rubbing her back. When she was no longer shaking, Kya pulled back.
“Come back to bed,” She said softly, cupping Lin’s scarred cheek in her hand.
Lin nodded and followed Kya back to their bed, curling into Kya’s chest and draping her arm over her torso.
“Do you want to talk about it? Kya asked quietly.
Lin lay quietly for a minute before responding, debating whether to say anything or not.
“It was the Amon nightmare again,” She paused and shifted, finding Kya’s hand and taking it in her own.
Kya hummed in response, letting Lin play with her fingers. After what felt like ages, she spoke again.
“It was different this time, wasn’t it,” She placed her hand on top of Lin’s to stop her fiddling.
Lin sucked in a deep breath.
“Yeah,” She said, moving her head to look up at Kya.
“He turned into my mom, and then you. My mom said I’d failed, and you… you said that I’d gone too far. That you couldn’t forgive me this time,” A tear slipped down her face and she moved her head again, looking down at their hands.
“That sounds awful,” Kya lifted her hand and interlocked her fingers with Lin.
“I’m not going anywhere, I promise,” Lin squeezed Kya’s hand in response.
“Thank you,” She breathed, closing her eyes and relaxing against Kya.
“I love you,” Kya whispered a moment later, placing a kiss on the top of her head.
“I love you too,” Lin replied before they both drifted back into deep, dreamless sleep.
———————————————
She knew exactly what was happening. She could feel the fog seeping into her skin, filling her lungs, clouding her vision. It took over her senses first, then creeped into her mind. It made her dizzy, then tired, then started showing her all the things she didn’t want to see.
A man she’d found half dead in a cave when she was only twenty one. She hadn’t been able to save him no matter how hard she tried.
This isn’t real. Just wake up.
A woman and her baby, both dead after complications with the birth. It had been her first and last delivery, at twenty three.
It isn’t real. Wake up.
A handful of pale villagers, their eyes sunken and skin almost green. She’d done everything she could to heal them, and had kept the virus from spreading to anyone else, but had lost every one of them. She’d been twenty seven.
Just wake up.
A twenty nine year old woman, the exact same age as her, drained and lying in a pool of her own blood. They’d been travelling together for almost a year. She’d found her too late, and healing the wounds caused by her own blade had done nothing compared to the sheer amount of blood loss.
Wake up.
Jerking out of a deep sleep in the middle of the night to the screams of the others in her hotel. Nearly suffocating trying to get out of the fire. Being the only healer despite being just thirty four. Losing nearly half of the people pulled from the burning building.
Please.
Watching her friend step over the edge of a cliff at thirty seven, a year older than her. Screaming his name and running down the path to the bottom, only to find him crumpled. She tried anyway. Nothing brought him back.
Kya.
Visiting Air temple Island at forty one only to watch her father dying slowly. She was the last one to see him alive. She tried to bring him back. She failed over and over again until someone pulled her away from him.
Kya, please.
Teaching waterbending in the South Pole. Her youngest student, a boy not older than four years old, falling through the ice. Her forty eight years of life somehow still not being enough to give her the ability to save him. The wails of his mother when she had to tell her what happened.
It isn’t real. Wake up.
Coming back to Republic City and going to Lin’s apartment with the intent of confessing her feelings. She’d found her bleeding in the bathroom. She’d never been so afraid, and had somehow kept her alive. She’d been fifty three, but felt like a child again.
Kya, wake up.
Four years later finding Lin the exact same way a second time. The same fear gripping her, her hands shaking as she healed her again. She’d barely been able to breath.
Please, please wake up.
She’d barely been able to breath.
She couldn’t breath.
The air was too thick.
It was the panic filling her lungs when someone she loved got hurt. It was the smoke in that burning building. It was the guilt that grew with every person she lost.
It was the fog infecting her body, her mind.
She was suffocating.
Kya.
She couldn’t breath.
Kya.
She was shaking.
Kya.
The world was becoming fuzzy.
Kya.
Why was everything shaking?
“Kya, please,” Lin’s voice was the first thing she heard when her eyes snapped open.
Kya’s vision was swimming, tears streaming from her eyes. She pushed herself into a sitting position, bringing her knees to her chest and hugging them tightly. Her breathing was shallow and fast, the lack of oxygen making her light headed. She flinched when Lin placed her hand on her back, relaxing after a second and letting her softly bring it up and down. Lin let her be for a second before recgnizing that she needed help getting out of the attack this time.
“Kya, can you look at me?” She moved so that she was sitting cross-legged in front of Kya.
Kya shook her head almost imperceptibly, keeping her stare locked on her feet.
“Alright, that’s ok. Let’s start with five things you can see,” She reached up to pull one of Kya’s hands away from her legs, squeezing it in an attempt to encourage her.
Kya’s eyes moved up from her feet, tracing around the room. Her eyelids fluttered as she did so, threatening to close every time she looked somewhere new. After a moment her stare returned to her feet and she opened her mouth to speak. It hung open for a moment before it closed again and she shook her head.
“Hey, its ok. Do you want me to get your notepad so you can write instead?” Lin watched Kya hesitate before nodding.
“Alright,” Lin stood and walked two steps to the bedside table, pulling the drawer out as quietly as she could and grabbing Kya’s small pad of paper and pen.
She walked back to Kya, who had moved so that she sat cross-legged with her arms wrapped tightly around her torso. Her breathing had improved slightly, but she was still clearly in her state of panic. Lin sat across from her again and placed the notepad and pen on her lap.
Kya closed her eyes for a second before pulling her arms from around her. She grabbed the pen with a shaking hand, glancing around the room again before scribbling a collection of words on the paper. Lin took the notepad and read the notes out loud, looking around as she did so.
“The window, the rug, me, your hands, the blanket. Perfect,” She smiled reassuringly at Kya and handed the pad back.
“How about four things you can feel?” She rested her hand on Kya’s knee.
Kya nodded and used her other hand to rub the blanket quickly. She then touched Lin’s hand lightly, ran her hand through her own hair, and rubbed her fingers on the paper. She wrote down the four things she’d touched and gave the pad to Lin again.
“The blanket, the best hand ever,” Lin couldn’t help but laugh, looking up at Kya, who had a tiny smile of her own shining through her tears.
“Your hair, and the paper. You’re doing great, Kya,” She gave the paper back and reached forwards, wiping one of Kya’s cheeks.
“Now how about three things you can hear?” Kya stared at the paper, listening, before she wrote anything.
“Your breathing, cars, Jin from next door’s radio even though it’s the middle of the night,” Lin laughed again and grinned at Kya.
“Amazing. Two things you can smell?”
Kya took in a deep breath through her nose, closing her eyes to focus on the smells. Her eyebrows furrowed in concentration and she inhaled again, blinking twice before writing.
“The ocean, home. Perfect, you’re almost there,” Lin put her hand on Kya’s knee again as she wrote the last one, not needing Lin to tell her what it was.
“Toothpaste,” Lin read, squeezing Kya’s knee slightly.
“You alright now?” She looked up at Kya, who’s breathing was now a little shaky but much more evened out.
Her eyes were no longer glazed over, and she wasn’t crying. She smiled at Lin, grabbing the pad from her one last time.
Thank you, she wrote, lifting Lin’s hand to her lips.
“Talk in the morning?” Lin asked, sensing that Kya needed time before she’d be able to voice her thoughts again.
Kya nodded gratefully and tucked the pad back in its drawer, patting the bed next to her. Lin crawled under the covers next to her, hugging her and holding her hand as they both fell back asleep.

Heartbeat (PART 2)
check the tags for trigger warning. In case anyone is in doubt this happens in 146 so Lin is 26 and Tenzin 27
I don't know how to put a link here so part 1 is fixed in my page
fic under the cut
After Lin returned from her tour on the Island with Izumi close at her heels, Tenzin could notice her slightly swollen eyes and how she kept away from social interactions as much as possible. Kya was also watching her from across the room. The joy she felt when Lin and Tenzin announced the expected baby was slowly coming apart as she watched the earthbender interact with her baby brother. She didn't know if she felt worse because she was jealous of her brother or because she couldn't be overjoyed anymore by the little-announced news.
After all the guests had left, Lin and Tenzin said their good night to the family and retired to Tenzin's room. Lin's stillness was making Tenzin worried, he was used to her closing down when she didn't want to talk about something that made her uncomfortable, but this was different. She looked scared. But when she turned off the light on the lamp on her side of the bed said good night and then rolled over on her back to sleep, he figured it would be better for both of them if he just snuggled her body against his.
The next morning, right after breakfast, Lin was sitting on one of the beds at Katara's healing hut on Air Temple Island. Tenzin was sitting in a chair in front of the bed, watching Lin as serious as she could be. She was apprehensive, Tenzin knew, and made a point of staring at the wall behind him like it was the most interesting thing in the world in an effort not to look at him.
- Everything will be fine, Lin. - he said trying to calm her down, but she just directed her impenetrable gaze to him
- You don't know that. – she replied firmly – This child is growing inside of me, there is a high chance of her being born with three eyes.
The screen doors separating the room from the rest of the healing hut opened and Tenzin immediately rose to his feet to carry the basin of water Katara had brought with her and set it on the nightstand beside the bed Lin was occupying.
- Hi sweetheart – Katara greeted Lin affectionately as she approached the bed – Can you take off your shirt and turn to get started? - Lin nodded and did what Katara had asked, turning over in bed with only his bindings and sweatpants
Katara approached again with her hands covered with water and placed them on the metalbender’s chest, she opened her mouth to speak to Lin, but Tenzin interrupted her:
- Aren't you going to examine the baby first? - he asked anxiously
- I didn't know you were a healer, Tenzin. – the waterbender Master said ironically and resumed her consultation. Lin was pressing her lips together to keep from laughing at the face Tenzin had made at her mother's reply – I'll ask you some questions, okay? – the earthbender nodded – I need you to try to be as exact as possible with the dates. I assume you weren't trying to get pregnant. - was the first question
- No. - Lin and Tenzin replied together after exchanging looks
- When was your last cycle?
Lin pondered for a while, doing the math in her mind.
- 5 weeks.
- Did you have sex during this period? – Katara's question made Tenzin red
- Yes. - It was Lin who answered
- How long are you late? – she asked and moved the water to Lin's back
- About 15 days. My cycles are not regulated, I always end up missing one or two due to stress at the Police Station.
- When was the last time you had sex?
- Mom... - Tenzin objected, turning almost scarlet, receiving a reproachful look from his mother
- Two days ago. – Lin replied, ignoring Tenzin's objection and Katara nodded and moved her water-covered hands away from Lin's body
- You can lie down, I'll start examining the baby.
Lin did as the healer asked and soon Katara's hands were on her stomach.
- How did you find out you were pregnant?
- I can hear the heartbeat through the earth. – Katara smiled with this information
- I believe the baby was the person she was listening to last night. – it was Lin's turn to nod but Katara and Tenzin noticed her stiffen at the mention of Toph
Katara asked a few more questions about Lin's health as she moved her hands around her abdomen before stepping away and returning the water to the bowl beside the bed. Lin put on her shirt and sat down next to Tenzin on the other side of Katara's desk.
- Well... Lin, your weight is excellent for your height. The baby is approximately 5 weeks old and has a strong and regular heartbeat. – she paused in her notes – There is only one thing that worries me. – Lin shifted in her chair suddenly uncomfortable, she knew something wouldn't be right – Toph's pregnancies were very delicate, especially with Su. She had pre-eclampsia both times and with Su she went into premature labor because of it, thanks to the Spirits I managed to reverse the situation and Su was born close to the scheduled date. With that you have a genetic predisposition to have a risky pregnancy. As you said yourself, you are under a high level of stress at work and this is already causing changes in your blood pressure. This can cause complications for you and the baby's health. – Tenzin moved his hand to reach Lin's and squeezed it gently, but Lin didn't respond to the gesture – Under these circumstances I suggest you take maternity leave within the next few weeks.
- No way! – Lin exclaimed, pulling her hand away from Tenzin's touch and crossing her arms, she should have seen it coming
- Lin, try to be reasonable. – Tenzin asked quietly
- Tenzin, no! I'll have to stay away for almost a year when the time comes, I won't be locked inside the house for another seven months doing nothing, this will end up leaving me more stressed than the Police Station. – she turned her attention to Katara – Katara with all due respect, but I will not stop working unless absolutely necessary.
- I knew you would react like that. – Katara made a few more lines of notes before addressing them once more – You can work until your fifth month of pregnancy… – Lin opened her mouth to thank her, but Katara raised her hand to interrupt – Dont thank me yet, i'm not done. But until then you will work in the office, no fieldwork.
- What? – Lin almost yelled and her eyes widened in protest, but Katara paid little attention
- No patrols, no field investigations, no stakeout for 36 hours and no operations. And I know this is important to you, but you're also going to have to start slowing down with your workouts.
- Katara… - Lin tried to argue, but Katara continued
- And that is absolutely necessary. I'll talk to Chief Song myself if needed to. - Lin snorted and tightening the knot she made with her arms - Due to the delicacy of the pregnancy I will also ask you to stop drinking coffee and take appointments every two weeks.
- Something else? – Lin asked completely grumpy
- That is all.
And in the blink of an eye, Lin was up and out of the room.
Tenzin found her in the living room crosslegged on the window sofa as she turned the pages of the book she was reading almost aggressively.
- Lin. - he called her gently passing through the small crack in the door, but she ignored his presence. Tenzin rubbed a hand across his forehead and sighed before approaching her with slow steps – Lin. – he repeated and knelt on the floor in front of her, gently lowered the book she was using to hide her face and rested his hands on the metalbender’s knees
- I'm scared, Tenzin. – she confessed almost in a whisper – I'm not sure of anything about my life right now and it scares the shit out of me. First I was scared to be like the Chief, now I have to be away from my job otherwise I might end up losing the baby. Tenzin… – he approached her, snuggling between her thighs and lifting a hand to caress Lin's waist – I'm so confused. I never wanted this, I didn't want to have a baby, but now I'm pregnant and I'm not hating it, but at the same time it has my job and Chief Song has nominated me for the Captain's exam...
Tenzin had to compose himself with the revelation of that information, she hadn't said anything about the nomination. Lin looked down to meet the airbender's eyes and he noticed that her eyes were filled with fear, that feeling looked so wrong in Lin's eyes, she was always brave, always gave herself to the things she wanted, he couldn't let her feel that way.
- You can be sure about one thing: I'm here for you and I will always be, no matter what. And I'm sure you're going to do what's possible and impossible for our baby because you're like that, you give yourself to the things you commit to. – Lin smiled gratefully at him and tilted her head to the side – Now about your work… – Lin tensed again – I'm sorry this isn't going the way you planned and that this will interfere with your work, I know how important it is to you. But I'm here for you and I know you're going to be Capitain and then AC and then Chief.  – he smiled  – We can make this work. You could move to the Island, you would be closer to my mother and I could take care of you. We can turn the room next to mine into a nursery, we'll let Kya decorate it with all those cute baby things… – Lin laughed at the same time a tear escaped her eye – We can get married.
- On that hill I like with view to the city. - she completed placing her hand over his on her waist and reaching for the other to intertwine their fingers
- On that hill you like.
- I could do that.
The weeks went by smoothly, and Lin's move to Air Temple Island was accomplished with two flying bison trips under the supervision of Sokka and Aang that wouldn't let her lift a pin, let alone a box. At each appointment with Katara, she would tell her that everything was running smoothly, that she just needed to pay attention to her stress level and her diet. A few days after completing the 12th week Tenzin was responsible for a big spike in her blood pressure.
- You´re showing! – he almost yelled when Lin appeared in the room among the steam from the bathroom only wearing her panties and her bindings while drying her hair with the towel, she almost left the floor at his sudden reaction
- No, I am not. - she said immediately pulling the towel from her hair and looking at her stomach
- Yes you are! – Tenzin jumped out of bed and grabbed Lin's wrist dragging her back into the bathroom
He doubled a gentle stream of air on the mirror to defog, positioned Lin in front of him, and turned her on her side. Lin fixed her eyes on the reflection of her belly on the mirror and found what Tenzin was referring to. It was a small bump, it was almost imperceptible, but it was there. The earthbender ran a hand over her stomach, feeling the lump and couldn't help the smile that formed on her face.
- It's our baby. – Tenzin said hugging her from behind placing his soft hands on the small bump and placing a series of kisses on Lin's exposed neck, who immediately started to feel hot and tilted her head to the side so that Tenzin had better access to her skin
The kisses became wetter and firmer, then Lin moved Tenzin's hands to her breasts squeezing it lightly, which made her let ou a little moan. She turned and brought their lips together in a needy kiss wrapping one leg around his hip, Tenzin realized what she wanted and then lifted her other leg holding Lin firmly on his hip by the thighs and walked with her in his arms to the bed
Tenzin was definitely loving the pregnancy hormones.
Lin was lying comfortably on his chest stroking Tenzin’s sternum as he drew large circles on Lin's bare back.
- Do you think Kya can find out if it's a boy or a girl? – he asked after placing a kiss on Lin's black hair.
- We don't need Kya to find out. – she replied raising an elbow to look at him – I know it's a girl.
- Oh? – Tenzin raised an eyebrow as well
- Beifongs don't have male children.
Thinking of the Beifong family tree Tenzin realized that Lin was correct. Lao was the only male child among three sisters, Poppy had only one sister and had an only daughter, Toph, who also had only daughters.
- But we can talk to her after dinner, I'm sure she'll be more than happy to tell everyone that she found out. - Lin commented lying down again on the airebnder’s chest
- I bet she will.
Unlike what they expected, Kya didn't show up for dinner. Katara said she was in her room packing her things to leave the next morning. Lin's heart clenched at the news, she didn't want her to leave, a selfish part of her wanted to keep Kya close so she could feel her heady presence that made her so confused. After Tenzin excused himself to take a phone call in his office, Lin did the same and went to Kya's room, something was wrong and she knew.
Lin knocked on the door, but loud music drowned out the sound, the metalbender opened the door a crack and she could see Kya stuffing clothes into her suitcase as she muttered to herself. Lin cleared her throat to announce her presence and Kya flew nearly three feet off the ground but didn't turn to her, the waterbender brought her hands to her face and took a few deep breaths before turning to face her. The waterbender didn't greet her with a bright smile as she always did, instead her eyes were sad and puffy and the tip of her nose was red. Lin raised her hand toward the radio and turned her fingers to turn off the device.
- Are you leaving. – it wasn't a question
- Yes. – Kya replied trying to sound firm and went back to stuffing clothes in her suitcase
- Why? – Lin asked entering the room, but Kya didn't answer her, just started to form a ball with the piece in her hand and threw it on the bed aggressively – Kya. What's happening? – Kya turned to her and once again Lin was surprised to see the piercing blue eyes filled with tears, Lin always knew that Kya cried at a drop of a hat but there was nothing that could explain it
- I can't be here right now. – Kya's answer only made Lin more confused – I'll come back when you enter the eighth month to help with the delivery, but I can't… – A sob escaped her lips and Kya covered her face to hide her tears
Instinctively Lin approached her, grabbed her wrists and gently pulled her hands away from her face. Still holding one of Kya's hands, Lin raised the other to the waterbender’s face and touched it with the greatest gentleness in the world, as if it would break with any careless touch. At first Kya was transfixed by the closeness she was from the metalbender, but she let herself feel comfortable as callused hands whiped her tears.
When Lin's hand lowered again, without noticing Kya mirrored Lin's gesture touching her face, she didn't seem bothered by the touch, so Kya ran her thumb over the twin scars on her cheek. They weren't smiling, they were afraid that any movement would break the spell surrounding them. The waterbender tried to absorb every detail of Lin's face, she wanted to kiss her. Lin's eyes were fixed on Kya's lips and she wondered if they were as soft as they looked. But suddenly Kya's touch faltered and she let out a soft breath.
- That's why I need to go. – Kya said fighting back tears and took her hand away from Lin's face.
The metalbender instantly missed the touch and watched silently as Kya closed her suitcase threw it over her shoulder and walked through the doorframe with just a "Good night Lin" and left leaving Lin standing and confused in the middle of her own bedroom.
When Lin returned to her’s and Tenzin’s room, Tenzin was lying on the bed while reading a book. She could feel that her cheeks were still hot and they sure were red. Tenzin lowered the book and sat up, noticing his girlfriend’s lost gaze.
- Lin, what's wrong? - he asked worried.
Tenzin's voice brought her back to reality and she blinked a few times to clear her thoughts of what had happened, or nearly happened, in Kya's room.
- Nothing. – she replied with a brief smile – Everything is fine. – she watched Tenzin's shoulders relax immediately.
- What did Kya say? - he asked anxiously
- That's a girl.
The way Kya left the next day left Lin thoughtful and distant for the next few days. She didn't understand what they were or where those feelings related to the waterbender came from, but she knew one thing: she missed Kya. That didn't mean she didn't love Tenzin, of course she loved him, with every beat of her heart, so what Kya made her feel made her even more confused. So, as with all the feelings she wasn't going to talk to anyone about, she stuffed them inside a little box and pushed them into a corner of her mind where she could pretend they didn't exist.
Along with the 14th week of pregnancy came the exam to select the next Captain of the Republic City Police Department. The theoretical part for the Captain's exam was being applied and all the Lieutenants of the 15th Class were gathered in the brifing room with their faces buried in scrolls reading and writing, Lin Beifong was the only Lieutenant of the 16th Class present. After explaining the entire situation to Chief Song, he did not allow her not to take the test with the other Lieutenants of the 15th class.
- This test is a mere formality, I have already made my decision, you will be the next Captain. Yoy will take the exam and as soon as you come back from maternity leave you will assume the post. - he said
And that's how she ended up sitting in the back of the brifing room for a four-hour test. Occasionally her right hand would leave its resting place beside the paper to caress the belly completely imperceptible to outside eyes hidden under her armor, which was no longer being so comfortable. Her foot remained barefoot against the floor as the heartbeat of the small baby growing in her womb soothed her.
Later that day, Lin and Tenzin were sitting on their bed, their backs against the headboard, she had just told him about how the test had gone and about all her expectations in that matter, Tenzin assured her that there was nothing she should worry as Chief Song had already made his decision that she would take over after her maternity leave, his hands never leaving Lin's stomach as her cold hands covered his.
She reached over to her bedside table to pick up the book about pregnancy Katara had given her, which had been hers during her pregnancies. Lin was devouring the book. Each chapter talked about what to expect in each week of pregnancy and what was happening with the baby in that week, as she completed each week she read a new chapter and reread it several times until completing the next. That night Lin couldn't contain her anxiety and ended up reading the chapters about the next few weeks, while reading Tenzin lay with his face lying close to her bump, talking in whispers with the baby.
- Her eyesight will start to develop in a few weeks. Unless she's blind.
- She's not blind. He is not blind - Tenzin countered - But if he or she is blind, that’s not a problem.
- I already told you it's a girl. – Lin said looking at him – You can call it "she", because the baby will be born and she will think you were wrong all along. – Tenzin frowned at her confused and Lin shook her head – Suddenly she's not even listening, she might be deaf.
- Not a problem too. One of the monks who trained my father was deaf. - he commented trying to get around Lin's pessimism
- Okay, but what if it's not okay?! Two heads, three arms...?
- Stop. – Tenzin said horrified to her
- I'm just saying. If a woman has to have a child with two heads, three arms and 11 fingers, that woman is me.
- Lin... it doesn't even make sense, if she has three arms it will be 15 fingers and I don't know why I'm saying this. – he shot in sequence, getting ready on his pillow – Now go to sleep, please. – he got up to kiss her temple and Lin started to move to get out of bed.
- I just need to get something from the kitchen. - she said getting up from the bed and left the room
Tenzin knew she didn't need anything from the kitchen. The trip there was just an excuse to be able to put her bare feet on the floor so she could hear the baby's heart beating. He knew Lin was worrying too much and that listening to the baby's heart soothed her.
When she reached the kitchen, Lin placed her hands on her belly, closed her eyes and stomped firmly with her left against the floor. The waves of her seismic sense swept the entire first floor, but Lin was focused on the small square meter she was standing in, the waves crept up her body and she could see the outline of her baby in her womb. She stroked her tiny belly until the waves dissipated and the formed image faded from her mind.
One Wednesday night in the middle of the 16th week of pregnancy, Lin woke up with a terrible pain in her lower abdomen. She sat up in bed with her hand on her stomach and let out a silent scream of pain. Something wasn't right. She turned to Tenzin and shook him desperately, trying to wake him up.
- Tenzin. – she turned to him and shook him with all the strength that was left in her body, which wasn't much when he heard the tone of his girlfriend's voice he sat up immediately on the bed – Tenzin, there's something wrong... the baby. - she said through her tears, the only words that escaped her mouth and in the next second she was bending forward in a scream of pain
He immediately got out of bed to run to his mother's room, but as soon as he turned on the lamp to see his way to the door he froze in place as he noticed the pool of blood Lin was sitting in. In that moment she knew. Her baby was gone.
Tenzin entered his parents' room unannounced, they were sleeping peacefully facing each other, completely unaware of what was going on. The door hit the wall with the force it was opened, Katara was the first to get up and when she noticed the expression on her son's face she realized that something wasn't right.
- Lin is in pain. - he said breathlessly
In less than a second Katara was on her feet with Aang at her heels.
- Take her to my healing hut, your father and I will prepare the pool. – she said as she tied a robe around her waist and put on her slippers
Tenzin carried Lin to his mother's hut, her weight barely perceptible in his arms. She was terribly quiet and pale, the tears had stopped and now they were just damp, glistening memories on her cheeks. He walked quickly while trying not to pay attention to the bloodstains on her thighs. As soon as they entered the hut, Aang came to their assistance and helped Tenzin get Lin into the pool.
Aang moved to leave the room and let his wife work on Lin and put a hand on Tenzin’s chest to walk him out, but Tenzin didn't move a muscle, reluctant to leave Lin alone.
- Tenzin go with your father. - Katara asked in a professional tone
Then he left the room, his father closing the screen doors behind them. But the look on Lin's face was one he couldn't shake from his thoughts, and one he knew he would never forget. Her face was streaked with tears, but no new ones left her eyes, she stared at nothing with a blank expression. That was the word that would be used to write Lin at that moment. Empty. He had never seen her like that and wished he had never had that opportunity.
When the doors opened again, nearly an hour and a half later, Katara's devastated gaze confirmed what they already knew. Tenzin felt the air leave his lungs as he brought his hands to his head feeling his knees go weak, Aang held him in place helping him to control his breathing while Katara's hands rested on his chest whispering things he didn't register. Once he was merely steady on her knees, Katara said:
- Lin had a miscarriage. As it was in the second trimester of pregnancy I needed to clean the uterus so we need to move her very carefully and she will need healing sessions for a week. – he could see that she was on the verge of tears as she tried to pass on the information, he tried to move towards the closed door, but his mother stopped him, she opened her mouth to speak, but the words were not passing through her throat – She passed by a huge trauma, a  miscarriage after the 12th week is more aggressive and she is very fragile. Tenzin. – she looked deeply at her son – She needs you more than ever, you need to be strong for her, I'm not saying you shouldn't have your mourning period or block your emotions, but you need to take it slow with her.
The airbender nodded firmly and took a few breaths trying to get his emotions under control before entering the room. Lin looked smaller and more delicate than ever in the water, her clothes were soaking wet as were the ends of her hair that made contact with the water just below her shoulders. He didn't know what to say and before he had a chance to find out he heard Lin break into a sob:
- Tenzin. – at the sound of Lin's broken voice, he immediately strode to her stepping into the water without bothering with his pajamas getting wet and she hid in his chest while crying openly and clutching his shirt – I'm sorry. I am so sorry. – she kept repeating as he stroked her black hair and her back
- Shhh. – he said with his chin resting on top of her head – This is not your fault, you don't have to apologize for anything. – it was only at that moment as Lin clung to his clothes and cried desperately that he realized that his own tears were running down his face and falling into the black strands of his girlfriend's head
Five days had passed since that terrible Wednesday night, and Lin still declined to join the others at family dinners or eat a decent meal or receive anyone outside the family who lived on the Island. Including your mother.
- I don't care that she doesn't want to see me. She is my kid. – she argued with Katara, but the older woman refused to leave her position in front of the door – I swear Katara, if you don't get out of my way I'll bury you in a hole so deep that I myself won't be able to find you. She needs me! I am her mother!
After realizing that arguing with Toph in Lin's earshot would not benefit anyone at all, she relented and let Toph into the room. In a historic effort to talk about her feelings, she told Lin how she felt when she almost lost Su and what helped her overcome that trauma in an attempt to help her daughter. But it wasn't the same, Su was very much alive and walking around her new town living her private fairy tale while Lin went through hell. Toph left placing a kiss on Lin's hairline and he said goodbye with an empty "Thanks, Chief". Although Toph hasn't left town, appearing on the Island from time to time, she hasn't returned to visit Lin, content in just listening and feeling her footsteps across the bedroom floor.
Katara and Aang were being the pillars on which she and Tenzin could stand, they were also going through their respective griefs, but they didn't fail to lend their strength to the young couple. Strangely, the metalbender found great relief in meditating with the two airbenders in the first rays of sun and this was the only activity that made her leave the room apart from the healing sessions with Katara. At Lin's request, the waterbender had told her everything that had happened that night that no one would ever forget, assuring her that none of it was her fault, but Lin couldn't stop blaming herself. What if she had listened to Katara and stopped working? What if she had eaten better? What if she hadn't ventured into the training room? What if she had been more careful? The "what ifs" circled in Lin's head and refused to leave.
On the seventh day Kya arrived. Dropping her suitcase at the stairs and running into the house.
- I came as fast as I could. Where is she? – she asked exasperated to Katara who had her hands on her shoulders in an attempt to calm her down as Kya tried to cross the kitchen agitated
- She's in the bedroom, but first you need to calm down. – Kya stopped moving and took a few deep breaths, although Katara could still feel her daughter trembling against her palms – Better. – she said and released Kya who almost flew out of the kitchen and up the stairs
Lin heard a soft knock on the door. With her feet off the ground she was unable to tell who was knocking, so she simply replied:
- It's open. - in a weak voice
When Kya came into view she was overwhelmed with the urge to cry, but she pushed it deep into her chest.
- I'm sorry, Lin. – Kya said as soon as her eyes landed on Lin sitting on the bed, she crossed the room with long strides and open arms, enveloping Lin in a much-needed hug that wasn't refused. The metalbender could feel Kya's hot tears on her shoulder, but she didn't cry – It's okay to cry. – she said in a gentle voice when Lin wrapped her in her arms, burying her face in Kya's neck and smelling her scent
- I do not want to cry. – Kya knew that was a lie. Lin broke the embrace and got up from the bed, the younger woman turned to her, the tears she'd struggled so hard with finally leaving her eyes – But what I want to do now is scream. I want to scream until my throat hurts more than my head, stomach and chest. I just want to scream to relieve some of this pain and this anger I'm feeling at myself. – Lin said firmly through his tears, gesturing hugely as she walked in front of Kya
- Then scream. – Kya replied in the same tone – Scream. Let it out.
- I can’t do it. – Lin said, trying hard not to sob and shaking her head – I can't, I can't, I don't...
She slipped on the wall she was next to and as soon as her hands covered her face she let that sob escape. Kya sat beside her, silently humming a tune as she stroked her back in large circles and allowed Lin to cry all her tears. After a few minutes, Lin calmed down. Kya was the first to get up from the floor and reach out a hand to help Lin up, who accepted and stood up carefully and leaning against the wall. But Kya didn't let go of her hand, tucking it in Lin's so that their fingers intertwined and she started walking towards the door to leave the room. Lin hesitated.
- Where are we going?
- Do you trust me? – Kya asked with a gentle smile and Lin's heart squeezed and she nodded
The two walked through the living room and kitchen hand in hand, ignoring the eyes that accompanied them. When they reached the outside of the house Kya began to guide her to the covered pavilion where Tenzin and Aang trained when the weather was not favorable.
- Ok, Kya I'm not a child, I don't need a tour on the Island. – Lin said when they entered the pavilion and Kya's hand left hers to close the door
- Scream. – she said turning to Lin
- What? – Lin asked as if that was the most absurd idea she had ever heard
- Scream. – she repeated, encouraging the earthbender with a nod of her head
- I can’t. - she took a step back
- Do it.
- No, I can't do it...
But before Lin could continue her argument Kya leaned forward screaming.
- I can’t do it. – Lin repeated with a frown and turned to leave the pavilion
And then Kya screamed again.
In an unexpected move, Lin turned to her and finally screamed, with all the force in her being, a soul-shattering shout. When it was over she sobbed and the glass windows began to shudder as tears ran wildly down her face. She screamed again causing the glass of all the windows in the pavilion to break and crash to the floor, but this barely caught Kya's attention, who had her full attention turned to Lin and accompanied her scream this time.
Lin's third scream came hoarse but powerful from her throat, and the shards of glass lying on the floor near the broken windows flew towards the metalbender, forming a curtain of glass around her. The shards began to whirl like a hurricane around her without ever touching her. Kya watched the scene completely shocked at Lin's power, not knowing how to react. She is glassbending. When Lin's hoarse scream ceased she fell to her knees on the ground as the shards of glass froze in midair keeping Lin partially hidden within the tunnel. Kya stepped forward and reached out to touch them and the curtain fell away, falling around Lin, keeping her untouched in the center of a circle, and Kya quickly entered the circle.
She knelt beside her and Lin collapsed into her arms. Kya held Lin close as she cried and sobbed in her arms once more, while she herself silently cried trying to make the act go unnoticed by the earthbender.
Each of them deposited the feelings that choked them in their screams. For Lin the pain that had suffocated her from the moment she learned she had lost her baby, the overwhelming guilt she felt for thinking she hadn't been good enough, and the feeling that she had let everyone down. For Kya it was seeing Lin suffer like that and the inability to make her stop suffering, the guilt of leaving, the mourning for the more than premature departure of a niece she would never have the opportunity to meet and the pain that gripped her lungs from not being able to comfort Lin the way she desperately wanted, from not being able to be with her, from not being able to say the "I love you" that almost escaped her lips every time she looked at Lin.

Happy New Year, My Love | Lin x Reader FF
Word count: 2510
It was the first new year’s celebration you were going to spend in Republic City, and you weren’t sure if you were excited or treating it as a normal day. Walking up to Air temple island and seeing Bumi and Meelo carrying boxes of fireworks “Ahh I see the island is going to have their own show” you smile. Both men give you their shit eating grin and nod “of course, It’s going to be huge!” Meelo jumps excitingly as he hurries over to the safe location to set up. “You are going to keep it safe right, Bumi?” you give him a glare as you fold your arms, and he smirks. “Of course, plus if things go south Kya can use her bending to wash it out. Wouldn’t want the chief to fine us” he laughs, and you shake your head. “there is only so much leeway I can do to not get you arrested, Bumi.” You exasperated and slid your hands in your pocket.
“where is the chief anyway? She is not with you?” Bumi looks behind you as he holds up the box and you shake your head. “no, why would she be with me?” you look at the eldest son of the cloudkids and he gives you a knowing look. You and Lin have been dating for a couple months and so far Bumi has been the only one catching on. As far as you knew Bumi was the only one…. The island sure loves to talk even if they are all about peace and quiet. It gets really noisy with the gossip. You sigh as you rub the back of your neck
“Actually no, she had to work tonight. You know because crime spikes up in the holidays.” you stress, and he rolls his eyes “hey I got this. It’s not my first time dealing with these beauties.” He smirks as he walks over and helps Meelo set up with the help of a few acolytes.
*
Lin has never really given an ounce of care for the new year celebrations. If anything it gave her more work and paperwork since it seems there are always crimes. Busted windows, drunken fights, disturbance calls, noise complaints, just to name a few. But this was the first new year since Tenzin that she was going to have someone, you. A part of her felt bad that she had to work, but duty came first. You of all people understood and for that she was grateful. You had told her that you were going to spend the evening alone, but Lin suggested to head over to the island with the airbending family instead. Once the shift was over Lin would head over, but the both of you knew that Lin would return in the wee hours of the night, after the festivities would be over.
Lin sighed as she glanced down at the paperwork in front of her and got back to work as her officers answered calls.
*
After a couple of hours playing with the kids you told them to run off and let them give you a chance to get something to drink. Kya walks up beside you as you sip some water and gives you a smile. “Fancy seeing you here. Actually I’m glad you’re here. No one should be alone for the new year.”
You gave her a soft smile and nod “yeah, I suppose that is true. I’m glad too. I love the family as if they were my own.”
“I’m sure everyone loves you too. Sad Lin couldn’t make it through.” She sighed as she folded her arms, and you looked a way for a second as you nod. “yeah, you know Lin. Always working to keep the city safe.”
“yeah, but I’m sure the city won’t crash and burn one night.” Kya huffs and you softly laugh “that may be true, but who are we to stop the chief from doing her duty”
A snicker is heard from behind the both of you and Kya rolls her eyes “really Bumi, how old are you exactly? You still snicker over that word”
You smile watching the banter back and forth from the two siblings. You slip past them as Bumi gets defensive at how funny the word sounds.
Stepping outside and feeling the cool breeze as some citizens couldn’t contain their excitement and started already setting off their own personal fireworks.
No one should be alone for the new year.
Kya’s words repeated into your mind and you glanced back at the temples. She does have a point, but who were you to just step into headquarters at this time of night. There is just two hours until midnight.
*
“you know as much as we love having here. I’m sure there is a certain chief of police that will love to be brought into the new year.” Bumi sits beside you at the wooden gazebo as you look out towards Yue bay and you playfully scoff “is this your way of kicking me off the island? And only with an hour left of the year”
“No, but what Kya said had some truth. No one should be alone during new year’s” he smiles softly as he nudges you before standing up. You look at him puzzled before looking back towards the direction of where headquarters would be before looking back at the eldest brother. “Go, I’ll come up with some excuse to give the family.” He nudges you before you finally give him a smile and stand up. Lifting your sleeve up you look at your watch and see you have less than an hour to head over. “Traffic is bad. I’m not sure I’ll make it” you mutter as you purse your lips. “well you better get going. Isn’t that why you have your motorcycle to begin with?” he smirks, and you return the smile. Giving him a hug “happy new year, Bumi” he returns the gesture, and you climb over the railing and earthbend down the island.
*
Lin looked over at her clock on her desk, 11:40 P.M., she groaned as she pinched the bridge of her nose. There would be no use to call the island, all the lines are busy with everyone else trying to call their loved ones. It’s just a day, tomorrow everything will be back to normal, surely you did understand and aren’t feeling out of sorts.
*
You were revving your bike weaving and bobbing through other cars and vehicles that were trying to do the same that you were going. Trying to get to your loved ones to wish them a happy new year. You almost collided into a guy balancing boxes of baked goods on the sidewalk when you swerved past a satomobile. You yelled out your apologies while he yelled out exploitative at you. Looking ahead at the road with the cold wind blasting in your face causing your cheeks to turn a rosy pink. Glancing down at your watch, 11:50 pm, “I can make it. HQ is right down the road.” You mutter under your breath as you revved and sped quicker.
*
A knock on the door brings Lin back to the present as she files a report in her cabinet, “Better be important” she calls out as she metalbends the door open. “Hey chief, with five minutes left to the new year I was wondering if you want to celebrate in the bullpen” Officer Zan talked to the Chief. Lin looked over and indeed the clock had just turned 11:56 P.M. since the question. “thank you for the offer, but I have work that needs to get done.”
“of course, Happy New Year, Chief” the officer bowed
“Happy New Year, Zan” Lin nodded at the officer and he closed the door.
“just 3 minutes until the sky is bright and the noises” Lin muttered as she looks into her cabinet for her stashed bottle of sake.
*
“10!”
You jump off your cycle at the front of the building as you start to sprint inside the building.
9
Running past the front desk as the secretaries were watching the television watching the broadcast. You hear the muffled counting.
8
You run up the stairs as you reach the top floor towards the bullpen. You’ve come here once or twice to visit Mako and in turn was a way to see Lin. Which was how you met the chief and got introduced to her, the start of that relationship. A smile appears on your lips as you think back to that moment.
7
No, this is not the time.
6
You push past the door and look around trying to remember if it was a left of right to the bullpen. You close your eyes as you try to visualize the floor plan. “Crap, ok focus…. Once you go up the stairs you make a….. right” you look in that direction and hurried over.
5
“followed by a left” you voice out the directions and then the first door to the right will open into the bullpen. Sure enough the bullpen comes into view
“Hey, you’re Mako’s cousin right? He’s not here” Tan looks at you as the guys are all holding cups to cheer in the year.
4
“I’m not here for Mako, is the Chief in? I need to report something” you urged to the officer and he shakes his head “She doesn’t want to be disturbed”
3
“It’s fine. She knows me” you brushed him off and l remembered where her office is, but Tan stands in front of you. “She’s busy” you glare at him and push past him
2
“Stop!” Tan shouts out as you grab the handle and open the door to Lin’s office.
Lin looks up and her eyes widen when she sees you and then looks at Tan “What is the meaning of this?!”
1
“Happy New Year!!!” the cheers coming from the bullpen as the three of you are looking at each other. “I’m sorry Chief, I tried to stop them” Tan quickly explains and Lin raises her hand up to stop him “It’s fine. You’re dismissed Tan, enjoy the festivities in the bullpen.”
“yes, Chief” Tan bows and he gives you a look before walking out as you closed the door behind you.
“What are you doing here, y/n?” Lin stands up and walks around her desk as she looks at you. Her voice laced with a slight anger that you caused a commotion at her place of work and surprise.
“Happy New Year to you too” you smile as you stepped closer to the metalbender.
“Still haven’t answered my question” she smirked as she leaned against the desk folding her arms.
“No one should be alone on New Year’s, Lin” you spoke softly to her as you stepped right in front of her. “if you couldn’t be with me where I was, then I figured I should come to you.” you gave her a smile as you looked into her eyes.
“it’s just like any other day, y/n” Lin muttered as she looked away to hide her slight blush.
“That maybe but I wanted to start the year with someone I love” you smiled more as Lin’s eyes widened slightly before looking over at you.
“what?”
“I love you Lin Beifong.” You confessed, looking right at those pale green eyes that you love to lose yourself in. A blush appears on your cheeks as you turn your eyes away from the slight embarrassment.
“Do you really mean it?” Lin looked up at you, this isn’t the first time you’ve dropped the word, but it still surprised her that someone would come to express it towards her. She didn’t think she would be able to find someone else to share those emotions with. She looked almost hopeful that you wouldn’t have doubts or regrets from saying it, doubts about you not really loving her. It all vanished instantly when you looked back at her and smiled. The love of your face is evident to anyone who looked at you.
“Of course, I do.”
Lin heard the fireworks setting off in the background followed by the cheers. You and Lin missed the countdown, but the most prominent sound that was going off was her own heartbeat. She was glad that you didn’t develop the skill to have seismic sense or else she was done for.
“Isn’t there some sort of tradition between couples?” you smirked as you stepped closer resting your hands on either side of Lin’s waist.
“I’m not sure I know what you mean” Lin breathed out as you looked at each other’s eyes.
“well the tradition is to kiss the one you love. Since here you are”
“Here I am” Lin smiles as your eyes glancing down at her lips. Your head came down to meet hers, and you kissed her.
The kiss started off slow and sweet. A slight uncertainty at first, each unsure about how far either one could go, but it slowly became more and more confident. Lin wrapped her hands around your neck as your arms made their way around her waist, and you pulled her even closer to you than Lin thought possible. Lin felt herself relax against you; she has never felt anything more... Right. You opened your mouth, hoping to deepen the kiss which Lin responded eagerly.
After a couple of moments, Lin reluctantly broke off the kiss, to get some air. Both of your faces flushed as you rested your forehead against hers. Slowly opening your eyes and looking into each other's eyes, each with a smile imprinting on each other’s faces. You brushed your hands down and held her hands into yours as you stepped back. Lin’s brow raised wondering what you were doing, and you smiled as you tugged her towards the window.
You spun her around once and Lin let out an amused laugh before you pulled her close to your embrace. Wrapping your arms around her waist as her back is pressed against your chest. A soft kiss on her neck as Lin’s face is illuminated by the bright lights of the fireworks. The other of you stand there a moment to enjoy the quiet moment and the sound of the city celebrating the new year.
"y/n," Lin muttered against you as she looked out in front of her.
"Yes, dear?" you muttered back, rubbing her waist as the both of you slightly sway side to side.
"Happy New Year," she looks over her shoulder to look at you watching you smile. How she loves your smile, it causes her to turn to face you as you cup her cheek.
“Happy New Year, my love” you whisper as you smile lovingly at your beloved. Lin pulls you into another kiss; and Lin knew at that moment, that if this year was even half as good as it was at this moment... then It was going to be a very good year.

Lin's Broken Heart
⚠️Note⚠️:This is my interpretation of what had happened between Suyin and Lin. I want you to know that this will have mentions of suicide. So please do not read it.
Summary: Lin Beifong grew up in a chaotic household. She believes she's not good enough and is hurting but doesn't understand why. This is a story of her time growing with Toph and Suyin. Please note that this is a sad story. ÒwÒ please don't hate me qwq.
Words: 2,740 words 14,375 characters
((Sorry for the spelling errors.))
⚠️Read at your own risk⚠️
As strong, and amazing Lin Beifong was, she was still human. She still had nightmares, she has trouble sleeping and there are times she doesn't eat.
Lin was a woman that was always meant to be strong, to be powerful and to never show weakness. People think she's so powerful they believe words won't hurt or or nothing can break her.
But what they didn't know was that Lin has always suffered from depression. At a young age, she was happy at times and other times she wasn't.
It started when she began to realize that her uncle Sokka wasn't her dad. She noticed all the kids in school had a mother and a father.
She remembered the kids gushing about their father's and felt like there was something wrong with her. People teased her and often said hurtful things just because she didn't have a dad.
She remembered her mother always brushing the topic off as if it were no big deal. Told her that her father was just some poor smuck that wasn't ready. It may not have been a huge thing for Toph but it was for Lin.
Anything to do with father's, she began to resent. She even stopped calling Sokka dad and started calling him uncle.
The second incident was when she couldn't grasp metalbending. She was so stressed and tired. Her mom spent a whole week calling her weak, telling her that she got it just after a couple of hours.
Soon 3 weeks passed and Lin still didn't bend the metal. Her mother walked away pissed. Lin stood in the court yard with huge tears in her eyes and sniffled. The 8 year old could only handle so much.
At the end of the month Toph deemed her training over. She patted her shoulder and sighed. "Not everyone is meant to bend metal kid." And with that Toph walked quietly into the house ready to give up teaching Lin.
Lin whimpered and collapsed to her knees. Night after night she prayed to the spirits, and had asked them for help. Asked them to have her mom be proud of her. And here she was with her mothers back to her.
Lin was 9 years old when she began to bend and her uncle Sokka took her out to go eat. Toph said she had a case to go over and only said "Congrats kid."
Lin felt numb and just sad. She held her uncle Sokka and tried to keep her smile on for him. After all, who would want to care for a whimpy child.
When Su began to show signs of being an Earthbender, Toph immediately called off work and said it was important. Toph spent quality time with Suyin and began to show her how to bend.
Lin only watched from her training on how her mother applauded Suyin and lifted her up saying how proud she was. Lin couldn't help but think Toph had another child because Lin was incompetent.
Suyin was 6 and a half years old when she began to metalbend. She remembered Toph dropping everything just to see Suyin herself. Lin was teasing her sister saying she couldn't metalbend till she was older and here they were with a prodigal sister that bent metal on her first try.
She watched as Toph threw a party and celebrated with everyone and how Suyin was able to metalbend. Lin didn't go to the celebration. Instead, Tenzin took her out to meet the bisons. Oogi seemed rather protective of Lin and took a liking to her.
Lin couldn't complain much about her childhood. She had a home, food on her table, a nice bed and even a great education. Everytime she felt sad or angry her mother told her that some kids had less. That some kids would happily take her place.
It wasn't what Lin needed to hear, it was just another reminder that Suyin was basically a replacement for her.
She never told anyone her thoughts. Never told anyone on how much she was suffering because she thought she was being irrational. There were times she cried herself to sleep, there were times she didn't eat her food. And there were times she had nightmares but never told anyone.
Lin was just a little girl suffering because she didn't know what she deserved. Lin had always felt guilty for crying too much, she knew it was impractical to cry because she was sad.
People often wondered why she cried when she was angry and wondered why she always got into fights. After her mother stopped coming to her school about her having another fight, Lin knew she needed to change.
Lin being the way she was expected to change over night. She made sure she did everything in school, stayed away from bullies and even began to take extra classes.
She went from being one of the worst students in her school to one of the top testers. If she couldn't be good at metal bending then she could be better at academics.
Tenzin saw how sad Lin was and every time he brought it up, Lin would fight him. Every time Kya tried to bring it up Lin would snap at her. And every time Bumi brought it up Lin stayed quiet.
They of course saw the difference between the sisters. How they fought constantly. How they were both different people. They kissed the care free Lin. They missed her so kuch that they even kidnapped Lin just so they can hang out.
By the time Lin was 16 she was young to be moved up to a high grade so she could graduate early. She showed her grades to her mother, told her the good news and all Toph said was "That's great Lin. Can you you make you and your sisters dinner tonight?"
◇◇◇
Lin knew she was being pretty but she was jealous of her younger sister. She was able to make friends easily, was able to fight and managed a B average. That is until her sister began to skip school.
Lin began to notice the change, how her sister would give her snide remarks or how she would start trying on makeup. Whenever Lin brought it up to her mother, her mother would say "I didn't even go to school."
Lin began to set a curfew for her sister to be home. It work for only a few weeks before her sister didn't even listen to her. Since Toph never backed her up Suyin began to say that no one was the boss of her.
Lin tried many times to tell her mother that Su was sneaking around with guys that were years older. Told her that it was dangerous for her to be out in the dark of night.
Toph always said, "Well she's a big girl, she can fight." Or "So what? Not like she would care anyways." Or "Tenzin's older than you and yet you're dating him. And don't act like you're miss pure, you snuck out to Airtemple Island."
No matter how hard she tried to get it through her mothers head, Toph didn't listen and neither did Su.
Lin would stay up for hours and hours only to have Suyin come back late.
Suyin was 15 when she first came home intoxicated. Lin was so worried for her only to have her sister stumbled through the door with a help of two boys that were clearly older than 18.
Lin made them scram and sat with her sister helping her sickness. It was around 5 in the morning Suyin had come, and Lin had a long two days at work and now she was up and taking care of her sick sister.
She sat in the living room in the dark. She had a bottle of her mothers stash in her hand and she drinking it down. Suyin was throwing her life away and Toph didn't care.
She sat there in the dark wondering if her mother even cared. By the time Lin had woken up it was noon. She sat up with a groan and slowly got off the couch.
"And how many boys did you beat?" Toph asked as she and Suyin cooked breakfast.
Suyin giggled. "5. I drank half a bottle of vodka before they quit."
Toph gasped and laughed. "Well you sure are your mothers daughter." She grinned. "Don't tell your sister that you can drink more than her." She whispered.
Lin watched them before she sat the bottle down and headed to her room. It was enough to see that her mother had yet let Suyin do whatever she wanted.
She laid in bed not even changing and just laid against her wall. There was a knock on her door. "Breakfast is made Lin." She called out.
Lin didn't answer and just held her pillow as silent tears streamed down her cheeks. "Come on you slept in all day. You should be awake." She yelled.
Lin continued to ignore her. "Just let her pout. Now come on tell me what else had happened."
Suyin stared at her sisters door and frowned gently. She was wondering if it was her mom that helped her through her bad hang over or if it was Lin.
By the end of the night Lin had her window opened. She listened to the city sounds and just looked at the twinkling lights. She took a drag of her cigarette and just released it.
A small gasp was heard and Lin turned to look over to see Suyin. "I... didn't know you... smoked."
Lin rolled her eyes and put it out. "What does it matter. None of you guys know anything." Lin muttered as she stood up.she walked over to her closet and grabbed a bag and began to fill it.
Suyin frowned at the attitude and crossed her arms. "And what's that supposed to mean?"
Lin waved her off and began to look through her clothes. "Nothing. What do you want? Do you need me to cook or something?"
Suyin shook her head and frowned. "I just... I came to say thank you." She mumbled.
Lin raised a brow and looked at her. "For what?" She asked as she grabbed a pair of clothing.
"For taking care of me last night. I wanted to... say I was sorry for coming home that late." She mumbled as she waited for Lin to lash out at her.
Lin looked at her and looked away. "Well it sure saved you from a hangover."
Suyin blinked in surprise from the lack of yelling or Lin's attitude. She was relieved but then upset at the same time. "Are you okay? You... don't seem like yourself?"
Lin grabbed another cigarette and lit it up feeling a bit anxious. "I'm fine. Nothing to worry about." She took a drag and leaned against the wall.
"You don't seem okay. Is there anything I can do?" Suyin was genuinely worried about her sister. All their lives they kept each other at a distance but that didn't mean she didn't care for her sister. There were times they slept together and times Lin would laugh with her. They uses to be so close.
Lin looked at her and gave a smile with no emotion. "I'll stop." She finally spoke. "I'll stop the nagging. I won't wait up for you anymore." Lin swallowed roughly and closed her eyes.
"I can't do it anymore. You don't listen to me and mom doesn't seem to care." Lin laughed softly and shook her head. "Do what you want Su." She finished her cigarette and grabbed her bag. Tossing in some of her sleeping medication and other pills Suyin didn't know Lin took.
Suyin watched her sister shocked. She hasn't seen look this emotionless before. All the times she's seen her, she was agitated, mad or even smiling. This wasn't the Lin she knew.
"Lin?" She asked hopeless. "Where are you going?" She asked noticing the bag.
Lin walked past her and stopped at her door. She stopped and placed her favourite bracelet on Su's arm. "Hopefully to finally get some sleep." She kissed her her head and hugged her. "A long sleep, I'm tired."
Su hugged her back but couldn't shake the feeling at the back of her head. Why... did this feel like a goodbye? "You're going to come back right?" Su asked shaken up, tears already forming in her eyes.
Lin smiled and ksised her forehead and nodded. "Don't worry about it. I just need sleep." Was all she said. She ruffled her hair. "Goodnight Su." And with that Lin began to head out.
Lin stopped at her mother room to see her sleeping. Lin smiled and placed two pieces of wood down. Each a carving Lin made of herself and Su. "Night mom." Lin whispered.
Suyin watched her exit the house, Lin seemed oddly quiet. She looked at the house once more before she smiled and closed the door. "Goodbye." Lin whispered.
◇◇◇
"HOW COULD YOU!!?" Suyin screamed. Tears were gliding down her cheeks as Suyin began to try and hit Lin. "I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!" Loud high pitched wails left Su's mouth as she tried to attack her sister.
Toph held Suyin back as she was at a loss for words. A hard lump was in her throat and she didn't say anything.
Lin laid in the hospital bed still feeling numb. Tears streamed down her face as she stared at her family blankly. Flashes of that night replayed in her head and she grit her teeth.
"Why would you do it!! You promised you'd come back!" Suyin said as she was finally getting tired. Suyin yelled at her for over and an hour and her mom had yet said anything. Suyin soon fell to the floor as she held her hands to the floor as she just cried.
Lin released a small sob as she covered her face. "I just wanted sleep." She said with a shaky breath. "I just wanted to sleep." She whimpered.
Toph stood there feeling her younger daughter tremble and cry her heart out and listened to her oldest daughter cry in pain. How did she not notice this? Her daughters heart has been broken for a very long time. How could she not have noticed?
Toph lifted up her daughter slowly and rubbed Suyin's trembling back. "I uhh..." Toph swallowed roughly. "I'm sorry kiddo. I really am." And with that she left the room to bring Suyin home.
It was a couple weeks when Lin was let out of the hospital. She was given some medication and of course wine for hysteria. Lin was to excersize every day, be put on a healthy diet and to drink 3 glasses of wine at night.
Lin was sitting in her room as Kya came over to help clean out Lin's room and help her move to air temple island. Suyin had yet to talk to Lin, Toph didn't seem to come out of her room till Lin was passed out. And whenever they were in the same room everyone was walking on eggshells around her.
Tenzin rubbed Lin's back and kissed her temple. "Let's go Lin." Tenzin coddled. Ever since the incident it was like everyone was afraid to say anything or touch Lin.
Lin sipped her wine quietly as she stared out at the city. She swore to everyone that she was fine when in reality she was dying inside. She knew now that everyone hated her even more so she promised that she would stay alive.
Not just for the sake of your family but the city. In the hospital Lin saw many different people. Some homeless, others single parents, soem kids. They were all different and then the same. They all needed help. Lin's problems weren't even a fraction of the peoples. And here she was, with a family that loved her, a beautiful home, a paying job.
She promised she would take care of the city. If not for herself. Then for the people. She swallowed roughly her wine and stood up feeling woozy. Lin wasn't one for alcohol and having to drink it every day was rather intense.
She slowly wobbled to her bed and sunk into it with a sigh. She had to get better for the city. She promised herself that.

Kyalin Week Day 6
Prompt Chosen- Modern AU
Now, I know people are tired of hearing about the pandemic, however when I saw Modern Au as an option on there I just had to write Kyalin during quarantine... it was too tempting.
"We have to quarantine at home for two weeks, its mandatory." Kya explained.
"I want even at the hospital, how could I have gotten it?"
"Because I was at the hospital, I could have it, and spread it to you." Lin crossed her arms, releasing a dramatic groan.
"Come on Lin, I know it's not ideal, and I'm sorry, but look on the bright side. We get two weeks off, just the two of us. We could, you know, try that thing you mentioned the other night."
"That was you who mentioned that."
"Well you didn't shoot it down, so its both our ideas now." Lin sighed, pursing her lips and Kya wrapped her in a hug.
"Alright, but as soon as my two weeks are up I'm going back to work."
"Of course." Kya kissed her on the cheek, watching as Lin disappeared into the bedroom. Her eyes panned the apartment, it looked like it could use a clean, so she got to work.
"What are we going to do for food?" Lin asked, staring into the empty fridge.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, Kya, we have no food in here." Kya came up behind her, placing her chin in the nook of her neck, frowning at the sight of the fridge light that illuminated nothing but the shelves.
"We eat out too much. I can call Tenzin maybe he can bring us some supplies."
"No, Tenznin will bring us a very selective diet and If I'm going to be in here for two weeks then I need real food. You know Kya, these abs don't feed themselves." Kya raised an eyebrow, moments away from kissing Lin, when the earthbender pulled out her phone.
"Mako? Okay... okay... look, I'm out for two weeks. Try not to start a gang war while I'm gone. I need you to do something for me."
"Tell him to get KitKat!" Kya said, Lin raised a finger, telling Mako to get a pen and paper.
"You ready?" Lin asked him, and began to fill him in on their grocery desires.
"Pretzels too! I could use pretzels right about now..." Lin added pretzels to list of demands. Finally when they were satisfied with the list, they hung up the phone.
"He says he'll be around in an hour. He went to get Asami because he's never gotten groceries on this scale before."
"Smart."  Kya smiled up at Lin, who was checking her phone. "So..." Kya said, drumming her fingers on the counter, "what should we do for an hour?" Lin looked up, putting her phone face down on the counter.
"Well you're practically undressing me with your eyes."
"Am not!"
"Oh yeah?. What color bra do I have.on today?" Kya pursed her lips, thinking.
"White."
"Wrong, black."
"What? No.I remember this morning you-" she stopped as Lin pulled open her flannel, revealing the black bra she was indeed wearing.
"You tricked me." Lin smirked, walking around the counter and planting a kiss on Kya's lips.
"I have some paperwork to get done, call me when Mako gets here." Lin smirked as she walked off, and Kya glared at her, running her tongue over her teeth. Thinking about how there's no one else she'd rather be quarantined with.
Mako knocked, letting them know their things were outside their door, as per standard, they waited until the two kids had left before picking up their things, Lin put four bags on her arms, gesturing for Kya to take the remaining two. She put the stuff on the counter, and watched as Kya took the time to wipe everything with Lysol.
"Kya," Lin said seriously, "are you worried at all? About this whole thing?"
"Like being quarantined? No not all."
"No, not that, I mean more like the pandemic in general."
"Oh. I haven't really thought about it, but yeah, I guess I am. I'm worried about mom, I know she's safe as she could be in the south pole, but this isn't how I want her to go. Are you worried about Toph?"
"Are you kidding me? The woman couldn't die if she tried!" They laughed, and Lin put her hands behind her, gripping the edge of the counter. "In all serious, I'm more worried about the people, the news says the unemployment rate has sky rocketed in the last few days."
"Lin?" Kya asked, putting the wipes down. "We're good right? Financially?"
"Oh dear, of course. I've been working for thirty years, saved up as much as I could not to mention my share of the Beifong fortune... its not me I worry about."
"Mako?"
"Yeah."
"He'll be alright, we won't let anything happen to him. I bet Asami and Korra already have a plan for him that he's completely unaware of in case things go south." Lin smiled and Kya lifted her lips to Lin's scarred cheek.
"Come on," she said, "help me put this stuff away."
The two of them cooked together for supper, and Lin almost forgot what it was like to be home for supper, let alone to cook it.
"Okay I think I got it," Kya said, lifting the spoon to her mouth.
"Kya, that's the stirring spoon you can't lick it and put back."
"Oh yeah? Watch me." Kya drew her tongue over the spoon, maintaining eye contact with Lin and causing her to blush. Lin gulped, breaking the eye contact and Kya returned the spoon to the pot, stirring the sauce again. Lin went for the sink, grabbing Kya's butter as she went past.
"Lin!" She yelped, swatting her girlfriend playfully on the shoulder.
"I didn't do anything!"
"Yeah right!"
"I swear!" Kya narrowed her eyes, seeing through Lin's weak attempt to hide a smile.  Lin set the salad and the bread on the table, ordering the plates and glasses across form each other, lighting a candle in the center.
"Whats going on?" Kya asked, looking at Lin's arrangement.
"I figure, since we're here, I might as well make up for all the date nights I've had to reschedule, or cancel, and never got around to it." Kya looked at her thoughtfully, putting her pot on the table.
"You're telling me I've been on a date this whole time and didn't know?"
"Yep. Surprise," Kya stifled a laugh and sat across from Lin, staring at the other girl lovingly.
"Well, you should know I don't usually go home with someone on the first date."
"Well good thing its not the first date then." Kya raised her eyebrows, her eyes still locked with Lin as she brought a piece of food to her mouth. Lin caught Kya up on everything in her life, the abnormally quiet Pice Chief talked on and on, and Kya listened, absorbing every word of it.
"Kya?"
"Hmm?"
"Are you finished?"
"Oh, yeah,' she said, sitting up. Lin took her plate, and Kya admired her from behind.
"Lin," she said, "put the dishes down."
"What?"
"We'll do them tomorrow. Please, just kiss me already."
"What if you have Covid?" Kya chuckled.
"Then we'll both have it anyway." She pushed herself off her chair, meeting Lin halfway across the kitchen, their lips meeting in an epic dance. Kya jumped, wrapping her legs around Lin's waist and the metalbender's hands found places underneath Kya's thighs to hold her. Lin set her on the kitchen counter, pushing her abdomen in between Kya's legs.
"Been a while since we've done this," Lin admitted between breaths.
"We haven't had time."
"Well, now we have two weeks to make up for it." Kya smiled as Lin's lips clashed with hers again.
"I love you," Kya whispered.
"I love you too."
1 week of quarantine
"Wait so what happened in the last movie?" Kya asked, just to get a rise out of Lin.
"Kya, were you even paying attention? Qui Gon and Obi-wan, master and Padwan head to the desolate planet of Tattooine where they-"
"Lin, I'm kidding." Lin rolled her eyes and Kya cuddle in close, reaching her arm over into the popcorn bowl on Lin's lap.
"Don't do that again or I'll spoil it for you." Kya laughed, pressing a light kiss on Lin's cheek. When Kya had mentioned she'd never seen a Star Wars movie, Lin had organized a rather professional viewing of them all, in chronological order. Kya would much rather be doing something else, but she could see how excited Lin was to watch them with her, so she did. All the good (and bad) the movied had to offer.
"Whos that?"
"Anakin."
"The little boy?"
"Yeah, there's a time gap."
"Wow, he's so grown up."
"Just you wait," Lin said, placing a fistful of popcorn in her mouth. Befoee the movie could get any further, the phone rang, and Lin got up to answer it, letting the movie play for Kya.
"Hello? Pema is that you? Hmm? No we are just- really? Is everyone okay?" Kya sat up, looking over at her girlfriend with concern.
"Theres a breakout at the air temple," Lin whispered to Kya.
Oh no, poor Pema. I hope Rohan is okay.
"Is Tenzin there? Okay, well, try to stay calm, please Pema! Where's Jinora? Put her on the phone." Lin tapped the counter, waiting for the eldest of the Airbender kids to come to the phone.
"Jinora? Is everyone okay? Ikki has it? You need to keep her away from the others, don't let Rohan out of his room, and please, try to keep you're mother calm until your father gets home tomorrow. Yes... I love you too Jinora, good bye, as soon as we can leave we'll come down there." Lin put her phone on the counter with a sigh, and Kya ran up to her.
"We have to go, I can help them!" Kya pleaded.
"No, dear, we can't help them. If we go there we are just exposing ourselves to it, and I don't like to admit but we aren't exactly spring pig-chickens anymore Kya." Kya frowned, crossing her arms.
"Lin, they are our family."
"I know Kya, but we can help them by staying here, and staying healthy. Don't forget we can be incarcerated for leaving." Kya growled, scrunched her nose and Lin reached her hand out on the counter.
"One more week to go, we got this. Remember what you told me, try to enjoy it."
"Pretty sure I said we could try that technique from that movie where I use waterbending to-"
"Well I paraphrased it." Kya's lips formed a smile, and her heart melted at the soft look Lin was giving her.
"Come on," she said, "let's watch this movie." Lin nodded and the two of them returned to the sofa, Kya resting her head on Lin's lap, her hair being tousled by the police chief. Every so often she'd look up at Lin, who was absolutely enticed by the movie, even though she said it was 'the worst one.' She fell asleep before the end, and Lin let Kya stay there long into the night, moving her only once her own bladder couldn't take it any longer, placing her in their bed. Kya groaned softly, rolling over and pulling all the blankets for herself. Lin crawled in behind her, still holding her in her arms.
3 Days until the end of quarantine.
"Kya, I know you've lost all sense of time, but you need to put clothes on."
"Whats the point? No one comes, no one goes. No one sees me. No one knows..."
"If you start speaking in poetry again I'm locking you in the bathroom."
"Go ahead, at least there I hear the voices from the drain." Kya groaned, flopping onto the couch face first. Lin sighed.
"Do you.... need to talk?" Lin almost choked on the words, but it got Kya's attention and she sat upright.
"I've always been an extrovert Lin. Im a people person and now that the people in my life have been removed... I'm just a person." Lin pursed her lips, she hadn't thought about it like that before. She had always been reserved, truthfully quarantine had been easy for her, she did daily workouts, reading... other stuff with Kya. But Kya couldn't be on her phone for more than half an hour without needing a change of space.
"I don't know how to help you with that..." Lin started, "but I can... give you a hug?" Kya smiled sadly and walked up to Lin, forgetting her nudity and hugging her.
"Lets go on the porch for a bit," Kya said, "I need some air."
"You're going to have to put some clothes on then, I don't think the neighbors will appreciate your tits being out the same way I do." Kya laughed, looking down at her torso.
"Oh they would. But fine. I'll put on some clothes, but you better be the one taking them off later."
"I wouldn't have it any other way." Kya grinned, satisfied with that, before she could dissappear into the bathroom however, Lin called to her.
"Oh, Kya!"
"Yes sweetheart?"
"Maybe we can try that thing you mentioned last week." Kyas eyes went wide, and Lin smirked.
"This is why, I love you Lin Beifong."
"I love you too. Now go get dressed, we're going to miss the warmest part of the day." Kya sped off, and Lin watched her go, the same gentle smile pulling at the corners of her lips. I could be quarantined with her for the rest of my life, and I'd never get bored. When Kya returned, she skipped onto the porch, and Lin used her bending to extend the available area for the moment. Kya sat at the edge of the concrete, letting her feet hang over the edge, humming a gentle tune. Lin sat next to her, her lips pursed in indecision.
"Kya," she said, drawing the waterbenders crystal blue eyes to her. "When this is over, we should get married." Kyas eyes widened, and for a minute Lin thought she scared her, but then she was pulled into the most passionate kiss of the their relationship, nearly sending both of them to the ground below.

The Transfer part 7
You wake up the next day disoriented and confused. Your eyes still puffy from the night’s weeping and your arms still clinging on to the badgermole plushie. Looking at the large window you see the sun already out and proud which disoriented you even more, it felt like you slept a lot but also woke up the same day. You sit up and carefully get off the bed, walking towards the bathroom. The walk wasn't as painful as it was before but it was very draining and when you arrived you had to sit down on the toilet’s lid until you regained your strength.
“Y/N!” Your name being called startled you.
“You shouldn't walk alone! You could've fallen!” Kya said exasperated as she reached for you.
You chuckled and allowed her to lift you and gently walk you to the shower. Gently undressing you and turning on the water.
“Kya, I got it. I can walk, I'm not an invalid. I'm sure in a few days I'll be good as new.” You say as you wash yourself, hearing her moving and taking things from the room.
“You may look and feel better but inside there's a lot of healing to do still. You have to be careful and you need to ask for help until your bones are fully healed. That and after I send you home you need to start doing physical therapy.”
“I'm fineee-” You say as you dry yourself. Doing simple things like that made you tired faster than before so after getting dressed you sat on the closed lid again.
Kya entered the bathroom and gently helped you get dressed before guiding you back to your bed. The sheets were changed and cleaned and your new friend rested near the pillow.
“Who got me the badger-mole?” You asked as Kya hands you a tray of food.
“An officer, she visited every day but you were unconscious until recently. She left you that along with some chocolates.”
Your mind instantly went to Jia, she was someone that would definitely do something like that. You smiled hugging the animal as you ate happily.
“Was it Jia? The officer that had lunch with me?” You asked expectantly.
Kya smirked. “I won't say who it was Y/N.” She chuckled, clearing your dirty clothes. “But, you know, a lot of your fellow officers have come to visit you and left gifts and other things too.”
You smiled. “They are so sweet. I'm going to miss them, didn't even get a chance to know them well before I got fired.” You chuckled.
Kya looked at you and smiled softly before laying a hand on your shoulder. “Everything is going to be okay.”
You smile back and nod. “I know. Thank you, Kya.”
“I'm going to fetch you some breakfast, don't go anywhere.”
With that Kya left the room and you sat in your bed petting the stuffed animal.
You fidget around in your bed, grabbing the stuffed animal and raising it up to eye level. It's eyes looking at you. “We have to give you a name, little one.” You looked at the black button eyes. “Molly? No, too childish. Badgy? Nope, too weird. Browney? Nope, not my favorite…”
You kept looking at the animal and thinking of names when a soft knock interrupted your train of thought and you looked up to the door. The Chief was standing there in her metal uniform. You instantly felt your face pale. Were you getting arrested? Fuck-
“Chief…” You feel your breath hintch as she stares at you. She keeps waiting for something and it hits you, she's waiting for you to invite her in. So you do.
“C-Come in.” You hesitated.
She walks towards you and drags a nearby chair to sit by the side of your bed. She sighs and gets comfortable before looking at you, she instantly looks down to your chest where the stuffed animal laid as you hugged it. She looked back at you with an eyebrow raised.
You blushed indignantly. “She calms me down okay!”
Lin nodded calmly. “I didn't say anything.”
“You don't have to, your facial expressions speak volumes.” You huffed looking away.
Lin sighed. “I'm here to talk to you.”
You look back at the Chief, her hands are fidgeting with each other and she looks at you gently.
“I'm sorry.” You say immediately. You raise your hand before she can interrupt you. “For disrespecting you. Not for what I did that day, I won't apologize for that. But I am sorry for the disrespectful, untrue and mean things I said about you. I don't know you enough to form such strong opinions and I cannot judge you for a reaction you had because I did something against the rules-”
It was Lin’s time to raise her hand. “Listen Y/N, what you did upset me greatly. I won't lie about that. No one has ever talked to me the way you did. It was humiliating and distasteful. Never had I had a subordinate talk to me in the matter you did and for that alone I would've gotten your badge.”
You swallowed thickly as she stared you down intensely. You were sure she was lavabending you in that moment, the heat of her anger making you sweat bullets.
“But you did say some things that were true. I cowered at that moment. I didn't think of that child and that was my mistake. I also called you names which were out of line and just as disrespectful. As your superior I should've had more maturity. In that moment I acted purely out of anger instead of assessing the situation correctly. That was my mistake.
Her face seemed to relax just a little as she looked at you. Her green eyes seemed greener and far more soothing than yesterday. Her eyebrows weren't as furrowed either, this calmed you immensely.
“Y/N, I didn't care about my reputation, it's not because of work or anything like that either. I was upset because you almost got yourself killed.” The earthbender spoke gently.
“I was…” She sighed. “I was afraid you were going to die, so when I saw you alive I felt many things and lashed out like an asshole… and I'm sorry.”
She's sorry?
You looked at her like she had grown another head. She looked down at her hands and took a deep breath.
“I'm the Chief of Police, my priority should be all life, but that day I neglected to find a way to save that child because I was selfish and I was afraid. I was afraid to go into the fire so I didn't ask anyone to do it either. I won't ask my men to do something I'm not willing to do myself, so when you ran towards that building I felt a lot of fear for your life.”
Her gaze went back to her hands as she took a deep breath.
“It was a very awful feeling, thinking that I had to be the one to identify your burnt remains. You would've been the shortest lived officer in my time as Chief, less than two weeks and you were already in a body bag. My officers are my responsibility, whether they live or die is in my hands. I hate when good people get hurt Y/N, and you may be stubborn and don't think before acting but you do have a great heart. I know what you did was out of love for the people, especially children you wish to keep safe. I get the sentiment, I feel it too.
“But I can't have my officers acting sporadically and getting themselves killed. You may not think of the aftermath but the thought of having to tell your family that you are dead isn't fun Y/N. I know death and injuries are part of our line of work but you can't take that to heart and go do crazy shit like this. You're gonna run out of luck one day… and I don't want to be the one that has to escort your remains back to the morgue.”
You felt a tug at your heart seeing her so worried… about you? You weren't sure but you felt an urge to comfort her. You saw that she cared, cared about others. It was refreshing to see this part of her. You smiled.
“Look, Chief, I understand. I know the pressure you can be in. I understand the tough decisions you have to make as a leader and I shouldn't have called you a coward for making them even when I don't personally agree.” You sighed. “But, I also have a duty and it's to do everything in my power to help people even if it can get me killed.”
You look at her softly. “I can't promise you this won't happen again because I would be flat out lying, but-”
Lin looked at you questionably as you spoke.
“I can promise that I will always give the best of me to help others… including you, Chief.” You smiled at her.
You can swear you see a light blush on her cheeks before she covers a cough with her fist. “Talking about duty…” She interrupts as she adjusts herself on her chair.
“If you still want to, you're welcome back to work as soon as you're cleared.”
You beamed with joy, if you weren't so tired you would leap from the bed and hug her right then and there. You settled by just smothering the badger-mole and smiling widely.
“REALLY? YOU REALLY MEAN IT CHIEF?!”
Her expression seemed to soften almost like she was going to smile, even if she didn't. “Yes, of course. Though some things need to change. Since Mako couldn't keep you in check, I'll be your partner from now on. You'll be supervised directly by me, you'll also be on desk duty until I find you are obedient enough to follow my orders and not just the ones you like.”
“OKAY!” You smile. “Man and I thought you were here to get my badge or something.”
She raises an eyebrow crossing her arms in her chest. “When I told the rest of the officers that I was considering firing you for insubordination they almost riot. They have your back and so do I.”
You imagined the officers burning trash cans in the office and jumping on top of their cubicles and it made you chuckle a bit. It also made you feel welcome the way they protected you like you were a part of them, it made you feel at home.
“You have gained a lot of supporters from many communities, especially the body modification one. Laws about helping to change how people view tattoos are also in motion, the law about work places and tattoos being the most popular. You have a lot of fans now, even Avatar Korra and Asami Sato want to get to know you.”
“Wow!” You stared at her in shock. “That's… a lot.”
“You also have a lot of interviews once you're ready, even President Moon wants to talk to you herself. A lot of lawmakers, the newspaper and a few other people want to talk to you personally.”
That's when the smile left your face and you started to feel anxious. “Oh umm… I'm not the interview type? I've never been in an interview. Not even for work.”
Lin looked puzzled. “Then how did you-?”
“It's a long story. I'm sure we're going to have more than enough time to discuss it.” You chuckled.
She nodded standing up. “Well, that's settled. If you need anything, call the station and I'll be here. Don't do anything to further injure yourself and listen to what Master Kya and Doctor Amara tells you to do.” Lin said in her chief voice as she walked out of the room. She paused for a moment at the door and looked back over her shoulder.
“By the way, your tattoos don't make you a thug. They do make you strong as hell though… It matches you.” She said like nothing, leaving you astonished.
You smiled like an idiot hugging the plushie. You could keep your job, and the Chief was not as angry as you thought. You felt something warm in your heart and chugged it up to the pure happiness you felt.
“Will you look at that. Officer Y/N still on duty.” Kya said, walking into the room with a hot tray of food.
“Can you believe that!” You laughed. “She didn't fire me!”
Kya hummed. “So I heard. Told you everything would be alright didn't I?”
“From now on I'm taking everything you say to heart!”
She laughed, setting the tray down and helping you with the plates. “Let's just get you ready. I know that if you follow my advice you're going to feel better real soon.”
“Thank you, Kya.”
The healer smiled, placing a thick blanket on your lap and then a plate on top so you didn't get burn.
“My pleasure”

The Airbender’s Wife
Note: A sort-of follow-up to Contentment; because this idea was sticking in my head and wouldn’t leave me alone. Again, this might have already been done before because I’m pretty sure it’s not that new but here’s my spin on it. Please let me know what you think. Let me know as well if have another idea for the title, I’m half and half about it.
===
Korra was bouncing with excitement as she leaned at the railing of the ship. Only a few hours were left until she would see the large statue of the previous Avatar, signaling the edge of Republic City.
After being holed up in the compound at the Pole for most of her life, Korra was keen to see the rest of the world. But first, Airbending training at Republic City would take precedence.
Sure, the White Lotus said they would need to protect her and to train her before bringing her out to the world. But really, what more can she learn when she was isolated from the rest of humanity?
Thank the Spirits that her Airbending master had other obligations in Republic City.
Thank the Spirits for his wife for suggesting moving the training to the city in the first place.
Patting her polar bear dog Naga who had joined her on deck, Korra realized that she knew precious little about Tenzin’s wife. And from what little she did know; the young Avatar was unsure how to feel about the woman. If anything, aside from being the instigator of the transfer of the Avatar, the facts Korra gathered about said woman did not bode well in creating the best of impressions.
--
Fact 1: She’s married to Tenzin, the last Airbender.
The first time Korra learned that Tenzin was married caught her by surprise.
From her recollection, it was around Tenzin’s third or fourth visit to the compound, back when she was completing her Waterbending training. Her parents had invited the family of Master Katara over for dinner when they learned her sons were visiting, offering to host the family for a couple of meals so that the waterbender would not needlessly worry about spending time with and entertaining her children. Never mind that these adult children just wanted to check in with how their mother was doing and would not really need any host to help them out.
Korra, her parents, Master Katara and her two oldest children were already settled in the dining area and were each clutching a bowl of soup when the airbender arrived.
“So, no wife today, Tenny?” Bumi asked, by way of greeting. The United Forces Commander proceeded to toss an empty bowl to his brother, who easily caught it midflight.
“No,” Tenzin sat down beside his sister, who pushed some noodles towards him.
Korra quickly swallowed her food and asked. “You’re married?” She had assumed he was a monk and therefore abstained from all, well, worldly things and relationships.  She said as much.
Loud guffaws erupted from the siblings of said monk, whose head turned an interesting shade of scarlet.
“What – where – how did you – why did you think -?”
This brought about more laughter which confused Korra further.
Tenzin’s sister, Kya, a talented waterbending healer in her own right, was the first one to recover. “Oh Korra, don’t let Mr. Serious fool you.” She patted her brother’s arm in emphasis.
“Yeaaah,” Bumi slurped his noodles noisily, ignoring Tenzin’s frown. “He be foolin’ around way before marriage.”
“BUMI!” Tenzin shouted, throwing a mortified glance at Korra and her parents, who were slack jawed at being caught unawares with these revelations. “They need not know that!” Water Tribe culture, after all, values privacy. Family life was deemed a private matter and some things are just taboo to discuss in public. Though, being raised in the previous Avatar’s household did not appear to hold them in the same restraint.
“Ahaaa!” Kya responded triumphantly, pointing her chopsticks at him. “So, you do admit that you were doing the deed with -!”
“Mother,” The usually unflappable airbender all but pleaded, hands shaking as though he can erase the previous minutes by airbending. “Don’t listen to them!”
Korra peered at the quiet master waterbender, who was calmly sipping her soup with a small smile on her face. “Oh, calm down, children.” Katara put down her bowl and tilted her head in apology to Tonraq and Senna. “Bumi, Kya – that’s enough. Your brother just arrived from Republic City; let him breathe. And Tenzin,” Korra noticed a twinkle in the old woman’s eyes, as through reminiscing a pleasant memory. “Don’t try pulling the wool over my eyes – I might not have your mother-in-law’s abilities, but I knew what you and Lin were up to. Those were not sparring bruises on your neck and chest that your father and I saw when we removed your robes for the airbending tattoos ceremony.”
At the time, Korra did not fully understand what was so funny about it but now she had a name for the airbender’s wife.
Fact 2: Her name is Lin.
----
Fact 3: Apparently, she bakes well.
The Water Tribe-born Avatar was practicing her bending one day when Tenzin arrived for a meeting with the White Lotus. She bowed as Master Katara signaled to take a break while her son bent down to give her a hug.
“Lin sends her love.” Tenzin murmurs to his mother. “And a ton of fruit buns.” He used airbending to lift a large canvass bag from the sky bison’s saddle, grinning as he presented the bag.
“That’s very thoughtful of her.” Korra sees a smile on the wizened woman’s face. “Has she been eating well?” Katara inquired, peering into the bag of buns.
“Oh, she tries,” Tenzin had a soft expression on his face as he responded. “I make sure to remind her when I can.”
Katara selected a bun, then noticing Korra moving at the periphery, tossed one at her. “Korra, Lin baked some fruit buns - you should try it.”
Korra nodded her thanks, never having tried fruit buns before. She bit a portion of it and chewed. The bread was fluffy and fragrant. It was pleasant, and so she took another bite. The filling burst into her mouth, sweet and flavorful. The fruit bun was good, Korra decided. She sat down at the steps of the training ring, enjoying the treat, mindful of having full view of Katara in case she decides to resume training.
“Ah there you are, welcome Master Tenzin.” One of the older White Lotus members strolled over, bowing slightly, having seen the sky bison descend a few minutes earlier.
Korra did not like this guy very much; he was always frowning as if it was such a chore to handle matters relating to the Avatar. She wondered why on earth he took on the oath of being part of the Order of the White Lotus when he found everything disagreeable. She irately took another bite of the fruit bun.
Tenzin stiffly bowed back to the man.
“Are you – alone?” Frowny asked, raising an eyebrow in obvious judgment. “I had thought Lady Lin would have joined you with regards to the Avatar’s training.”
Korra’s ears perked upon hearing about the Lady Lin.
“Lin has a full-time job back in the city,” Tenzin ground out tersely, stressing his wife’s name. “As you may know, she cannot easily leave her responsibilities behind for long periods.”
Korra stuffed the rest of the bun in her mouth; eager to listen without distractions. This was beginning to sound interesting.
“And yet you are here, Councilman.” Frowny Old Man smiled condescendingly, expression laden with insinuations. “I would have thought that training the Avatar would account as a matter of high importance.”
“With all due respect,” The airbender rebutted placidly. “I am to be the Avatar’s teacher, not Lin. I don’t see why she would need to travel to this side of the world for nothing.”
Frowny just shrugged with a smirk on his face, bowed to Katara and left the group, indicating for Tenzin to follow him for the meeting. Korra thought if airbenders were not averse to violence, Tenzin would have punched the man.
Katara placed a hand on her son’s arm, getting his attention.
“She is needed in Republic City,” Tenzin took a few deep breathes. “And this is precisely why she would rather not deal with the White Lotus.”
Tenzin followed inside soon after and Katara resumed Korra’s training.
As she went through the motions of the waterbending forms, Korra thought she might like Lady Lin (she decided to call her that in her mind) with her sweet pastries and her dislike for Frowny.
Fact 4: She has a full-time job in Republic City.
----
Fact 5: She’s an earthbender.
“Korra, can you help please?” Senna’s calm voice echoed in the empty hall where her daughter was (supposed to be) reviewing Fire Nation history. “I’m sorry to bother you but -.”
The Avatar got up immediately, interrupting her mother, tossing aside the text. “Say no more, say no more. What do you need me to do?” Korra was not one to sit still. She understood the importance of the literature, arts, culture, and history but she just found it arduous.
The relief on Senna’s face was evident. “Oh, thank you, sweetheart. You see, I need these blankets to be brought to the healing hut.” She transferred the pile of textile on her arms to her daughter’s waiting ones and indicated another set of blankets by her foot. “Master Katara wanted the healers to prepare for the coming snowstorm and I’ll need to hurry back to her and Kya at the apothecary.”
“No problem, Mom.” Korra responded, voice muffled and fully hidden by the pile of blankets.
Kicking the snow, she raised the bag of blankets by her feet to her arms. She grunted in the effort but well, don’t work hard - work smart, she always thought.
Turning to face the direction of what she thought to be the healing hut, Korra’s progress was slow with the balancing act of the towering blankets on her arms. Several people asked to help her but were responded with a strained “no, thank you, I handle it” from the teenage Avatar.
Unfortunately, a particularly slippery spot on the floor resulted in Korra toppling the blankets over and having them land on the snow into a soppy pile.
Korra groaned in frustration. No way she was going to bring this to the healers. The gossipy women always tsk’d whenever Korra would land in the hut with another scrape. She did not want to face their disapproval.
She leaned beside the hut, scrunched her face in concentration as she cleared portion of the ground and placed the bag, bending it dry. She was thankful that the blankets landed on clean snow rather than muddy sleet.
Korra crouched under the window of the hut, hoping that no healer would go out or peek to see the mess she made. She started to painstakingly pull the water out of each of the other blankets and put them on the dry bag to make sure it does not land on the snow again.
“I hear that the Avatar would be leaving the compound soon.”
“Really? I thought she would have a couple more of elements to master. Isn’t Airbending the last one?”
The Avatar in question grimaced. She knew nothing good comes out of eavesdropping, but she did not have a choice now, did she?
“Yes, but, don’t say you heard it from me,” One of the healers whispered excitedly. “But supposedly, Master Tenzin, the Airbending master,” Korra thought they said the name breathlessly and reverently. For what reason, she was not sure – I mean, everyone knew who Avatar Aang’s son was. “Was not allowed by his earthbending wife to leave the city.”
A gasp was heard. “No!”
“Yes,” The first healer continued while Korra leaned cautiously while soundlessly drying each blanket. “It’s all hush hush but the decision came from her – the Avatar will be travelling out for training. Never mind that all other masters had stayed in this compound to supervise Korra’s training. She decided that her husband is above it all,” The tone was full of disapproval. “She forced the decision – it’s not like there was another Airbending master, after all.”
Korra was dismayed; she was sure that Tenzin was unable to stay in the South Pole Compound because he had city council duties.
“How selfish!” The second healer exclaimed, no longer keeping her outrage quiet. “Well, what did we expect from her after what she did or didn’t do, for that matter.”
“What? What didn’t she do?” Korra pondered to herself as she wished silently for the two women to continue their chatter, becoming invested in the discussion now.
Thankfully, the two gossipy healers had much to say.
“True, this further cements her reputation of being a power-hungry bender who probably doesn’t care for her husband or even the future of the four nations itself. She is from a wealthy family and her lineage is well-known – what more can she ask for?”
“Well, that’s just stupid,” Korra thought as she squeezed out the water of the last two blankets. “How could the actions of one woman regarding her husband impact the future of the four nations?”
“I know right, I mean, why didn’t she consider it an honor? Can you believe she didn’t want to have kids! She must detest her husband or kids if she didn’t want them at all. If it were me,” The second healer empathically stated. “I would have no problem repopulating the entire Air Nation with him. I mean have you seen -!”
Korra burst into the healing hut dropping the blankets quickly on the nearest cot. “Hello-MomandMasterKatara-wanted-these-blankets-ready-for-the-snowstorm-thanks.” Ignoring the startled healers, she had to get out of here.
Nothing good ever came out of eavesdropping. The Avatar felt sick.
For all the limited interaction she had with Tenzin, he genuinely appeared to be in love with his wife. His wife who never came to the South Pole. His wife who did not bother to join him in his meetings with the Avatar. His wife who never visited her mother-in-law. His wife who put her career high on her priorities.
Tenzin’s faceless earthbending wife, the mysterious Lady Lin, was going down a couple of notches in Korra’s esteem.
With a slight feeling of dread – she realized she was going to live with her for an unforeseen period in the future.
Fact 6: She didn’t want children with the last airbender.
---
Korra realized she had been daydreaming as the captain of the ship announced their imminent arrival as Air Temple Island and Aang’s Memorial came into view. Her eyes squint while she tried to see the details of the temples from afar.
Air Temple Island - where the mysterious Lady Lin (as Korra had dubbed her in her mind) and the Airbending Master lived apart from the citizenry of Republic City. She stopped herself from shuddering at the thought of living with who she thought was a calculating heiress of sorts. As much as she wanted to ask about Tenzin and his wife, Korra felt intimidated by Kya and Master Katara and after all, her mother ingrained with her – family is private. All she gathered was it was true that Tenzin was childless.
“Well, I’m the Avatar,” Korra consoled herself as she grabbed her bag and tossed it on Naga. “What could go wrong?” She assured herself and her best friend, the polar bear dog, as she saw the White Lotus sentries awaiting her arrival at the docks. And, what is life without uncertainty, eh?
---
So apparently, a lot could go wrong – Avatar or not.
“Tenzin and the mysterious Lady Lin are gonna be so pissed,” Korra muttered as she bent her head on the metal table in front of her. Never in her life did she imagine that her first day in Republic City would be spent in an interrogation room.
Well, it certainly was not her fault that on their way to City Hall to meet Tenzin, Naga got sidetracked by the smell of food. Definitely not her fault that the White Lotus sentries were just walking and could not catch up with them.
Not her fault that for some reason she got involved in a clash with some triad members. As far as she knew, she was just doing the Avatar thing and helping keep peace in the neighborhood.
But apparently, it was not viewed that way by the Republic City Police Department.
The Avatar hit her forehead on the table again. “Stupid, stupid.” She sighed, wondering whether someone has called Tenzin or the mysterious Lady Lin. “So much for first impressions.” Korra obviously did not want her first encounter with the earthbending partner of Tenzin to be in a metal cube. She also did not want them to bail her out, wondering for the nth time what would the Lady Lin do if she found out she would have to spend money to get the Avatar out of jail.
One of the metal panels slid open and Korra sat up straight in attention.
An irate metalbender entered the room, holding a file and was reading off it “Let’s see – multiple counts of destruction of private and city property…”
Korra grimaced at each mention as she watched the female cop pace. She tried to defend herself.
“You should have called the police instead!” The woman slapped the clipboard on the table. “You have no business involving yourself with the triads!”
The teenager stared back at the grey-haired metalbender. “But you see – I had to do something, I’m the Avatar.” The Water Tribe girl smiled and opened her hands in innocence.
“I know who you are,” The metalbender was unimpressed. “And that doesn’t mean much around here. If anything, I should probably add something to your file,” She took the clipboard and started to write. “You also evaded your security detail, which is a breach of protocol; detoured from your journey management plan – also a breach of protocol, run about the city with your unregistered polar bear dog -.”
“Wait what?” Korra sputtered, interrupting the litany. “Unregistered – what are you – Naga is my friend.”
“And I’m a sky bison.” The stern woman deadpanned, tapping the clipboard on the table.
“I want to speak to whoever’s in-charge here.” Korra wiggled her wrists. “Please.”
Green eyes blinked at her. “You’re talking to her.” As she sat in the light, Korra noted the RCPD badge on the woman’s uniform. “I’m Chief Beifong.”
Just then a small metal panel opened and another cop spoke. “Chief, Councilman Tenzin is on his way.”
An irritated expression fell on the older woman’s face. “What time is it, Saikhan?”
“Uh – fifteen minutes past –.”
“Get in here!” Chief Beifong called authoritatively, getting up from the seat.
Deputy Chief Saikhan enters the interrogation room, awaiting orders.
“I don’t have time to babysit the Avatar,” Beifong ignored Korra’s “hey!” and just rattled off instructions. “And wait for the councilman. I have a previous appointment that I’ll need to keep. I want you, specifically you, to take care of this.” She thrust the clipboard into other metalbender’s hands. “Make sure to read each of these one by one,” She indicated each item in Korra’s file. “I don’t want the Avatar leaving headquarters with just a slap on the wrist, without a clear resolution, got it?”
“Yes, Chief.”
Without further ado, Chief Beifong exited the room with a clang of metal.
“Make sure Councilman Tenzin gets it.”
“I’m screwed, aren’t I?” Korra asked, unhelpfully from her seat.
Saikhan just shrugged, reviewing the clipboard, feeling no pity for the young woman who he had to chase across Republic City earlier.
---
Korra sat sullenly at the side table in Tenzin’s office in city hall, listlessly reading through Airbender culture literature.
After Deputy Saikhan had read the cases against Korra and after a back and forth regarding the details on covering the damages (“Yes, I will personally take it out of the Air Temple Island budget – yes Saikhan, you may get that in writing.”), Tenzin and Korra had walked silently to the Republic City Hall, Naga in tow. For some reason, Korra felt worse with the airbender’s silence than when she was at the receiving end of the chief of police’s acerbic tongue.
The walk to city hall was uneventful, save for Tenzin using airbending to keep the press waiting at city hall steps at bay. He had ushered her in the office and sent his secretary to take care of the polar bear dog in the meantime.
“Stay here.” He then left with a billow of yellow and red robes.
Tenzin was back within fifteen minutes and had, in no uncertain terms, expressed his disappointment in what had occurred upon her arrival.
Korra just bit her tongue. This day was just not going the way she wanted it to be. And she just knew it was about to get worse when she finally (finally) meets the mysterious Lady Lin.
The airbending master just shook his head at the end of his sermon, giving her a couple of Airbender literature, asking her to read up on the culture and just stay in his office while he finished work for the day.
Just as Korra was reading about the chi sensing abilities of a Guru Pathik, a two short raps on the door interrupted the monotony of the afternoon.
“Come in,” Tenzin looked up from the documents he was going over and his secretary entered.
“Councilman, Chief Beifong is here to see you.” The secretary formally announced.
Korra tensed. Not again.
Tenzin sighed, beckoning the secretary to let the Chief of Police in.
With the force of energy that seemed to always radiate around her (or at least always in the short time that Korra was exposed to the abrasive woman), Chief Beifong strode in the Air Nation Council Office. “You’re paying for this, Councilman?” She slammed a file on Tenzin’s desk. The secretary left the room quietly, closing the doors behind her. “You’re not saving me paperwork here.”
From her position, Korra recognized it as the affidavit Tenzin signed at the police headquarters earlier.
“I –.” Tenzin put up a hand to explain.
“I’ll handle it.” She waved him off. “When we had the meeting about training the Avatar,” Beifong shot a quick glance at the teenager at the side table. “The agreement was in Air Temple Island not Republic City. I thought that was clear?”
“Yes, I’m sorry but,” He floundered for words, gesturing at Korra and the room.
“Oh shoot,” Korra thought to herself. “Tenzin’s gonna land both of us in jail.”
“And another thing – a polar bear dog, Tenzin?” The Chief straightened up. “Did you know she was bringing her polar bear dog? You didn’t register that.”
The Avatar was sure that she informed her Airbending Master that she was bringing Naga but she wisely kept quiet.
At the councilman’s nod, Beifong pinched her nose bridge in exasperation. “With the exception of Lord Zuko’s dragon and the Air Nation’s sky bison, all large animals would need to be registered. We can’t have an entire menagerie loose in the city.”
“I’ll handle that, make sure it’s filed within today.” Tenzin took the form from the packet the Chief placed on the table.
“Is there anything else, I’ll need to know?” Beifong took the rest of the packet as she moved to exit the room, standing by the door now.
But before airbender could respond, the door opened and a man in Water Tribe attire burst in, Tenzin’s secretary trailed behind with annoyance. “Councilman, I’m sorry – I told Councilman Tarrlok you were in a meeting but…”
Korra thought she detected a hint of empathy in the chief’s expression as she considered the secretary.
“Councilman Tenzin,” The Water Tribe Councilman (Tarrlok, did they say?) inclined his head in greeting. “Chief Beifong.” Korra was not sure but she felt the Water Tribe man was being leery at the stern police chief, though it was probably her imagination. Nonetheless, she sought to keep still and not draw attention to herself at Tenzin’s side tables.
A glance at Tenzin showed him reddening while Beifong just continued to frown.
“This was a private meeting, Tarrlok,” Tenzin began.
“Oh, all business?” Tarrlok acted like he did not feel the tense atmosphere in the room. “Or something else altogether?” Korra did not comprehend what the other councilmember was hinting at. “You know I wouldn’t mind if -.”
Beifong cut in. “Is there anything you need, Councilman?”
The man just looked at his nails calmly. “I was just going to check in with Tenzin if he had already arranged security with our esteemed,” He let his gaze linger on the metalbender. “Chief of Police for tomorrow’s press conference.”
The chief of police in question shot a look at the other councilman, who quickly spoke up. “That was what you interrupted, I was about to discuss with her that the press conference of the Avatar was moved to tomorrow.”
Korra almost blurted out, “What press conference?” but the words caught in her throat as she saw the metalbender pin her with a look.
“Ahh, good good.” Tarrlok darted an uninterested look at Korra’s direction, probably dismissing her as one of Tenzin’s scholars. “Looking forward to attending it tomorrow then. Councilman, Chief.”
With the same bluster he had as he entered, the Northern Water Tribe Councilman exited the room, doors slamming behind him.
“Press conference?” Korra and Beifong both exclaimed when Tarrlok was out of earshot.
“I was going to tell you later,” Tenzin pointed at Korra. “And I was about to tell you.” He shot at the police chief who was glowering. “We had to move it up given that Korra here basically announced her arrival to the city earlier. The press wouldn’t stop until she releases a statement; the council thought the sooner the better.”
“Did you even prepare her? And wait a minute, you said the press conference was moved up – when was it supposed to be?” The metalbender crossed her arms. “A heads up would have been appreciated, Tenzin. Even just a heads up, Spirits know how easy you could have given me a heads up.” Chief Beifong rolled her eyes before leaving. “I’ll have to get back to headquarters; arrange for a security detail tomorrow and a perimeter check.”
Tenzin rubbed a hand over his face tiredly then gestured towards a form on his table. “Korra, can you fill up this animal registration form, please?”
---
Korra did not know what to expect of Air Temple Island.
Tenzin gave her a quick tour of the place (“That’s where the girls dormitories are, there’s the boys dormitories – you’re not allowed there by the way, the general training area, the earthbending wing is right behind that building there, the sky bison stables are behind the dormitories, the meditation areas, you’ll be staying in the main family residence with Lin and myself, we’re the only ones there, the air acolytes have their respective dormitories...”), showed her to her room, and handed her a schedule of chores and training sessions (“The air acolytes occasionally help in the main house but Lin insisted that this is still our household so we take on our usual chores as we used to in our Republic City house. I was thinking to eventually integrate you into our schedule.”).
After she had settled in her room and checked that Naga was taken care of and fed, Korra came across Tenzin who was at the living room of the house, speaking to someone on the portable radio.
“Yes dear,” He was rubbing the back of his neck as he paced. “Lin, I know – I’m sorry, I’ll make sure to help you with the paperwork. I’ll take it out of the budget of the household,” He paused to listen to the other line, wincing at what appeared to be sharp words. “No, there’s no other option right now.”
Korra felt guilty, if she had not lost control of Naga, Tenzin would not be having this conversation now with his wife, the mysterious Lady Lin.
“Mhhmm, okay. Love you too, Lin. Be safe.” Tenzin replaced the radio on its repository beside the couch when he spotted Korra, shifting apprehensively by the doorway. “Ah, Korra, just in time for dinner.” He beckoned her to follow him into the dining room.
The teenage Avatar meekly followed, the excitement of the day wearing down and embarrassment was starting to catch up.
“Hey Tenzin,” She began, unsure how to broach the subject as she sat down. Tenzin lifted his eyes from his rice bowl, waiting. “I’m sorry about how today turned out and for causing a lot of problems.” Korra fiddled with her fingers nervously. “I really didn’t mean to, you know? And I hope I didn’t cause too much, um, problem with your wife…”  She trailed off.
Tenzin’s lips twitched to a smile as he watched the young Avatar earnestly apologize. “Well, maybe you should just apologize to her yourself. But unfortunately, that wouldn’t be until tomorrow, I suppose.” At the young woman’s questioning gaze, he continued. “That was Lin earlier, she radioed that she’s caught up at work and would miss dinner today.”
Looks like I wouldn’t be meeting the mysterious Lady Lin today, Korra thought to herself as she poked the chopsticks into her rice bowl.
---
Korra twisted and turned in bed before deciding to sit up for a while, finding difficulty in sleeping.
She supposed she should be kind to herself. For the first time in forever, she was away from the South Pole, from home, from her family. She held her knees to herself as she looked out at the window, towards the lights of Republic City.
She had hoped to make a better first impression but instead was able to make an enemy out of the entire law enforcement agency by butting heads with the chief of police. She also got her airbending master into trouble with his wife. And she still has not met said mysterious wife; her first conversation would have to be an apology, which did not present well for future interactions.
Korra sighed as she thought of earlier that evening.
Tenzin was kind and paternal; asking about Korra and the Southern Water Tribe as they ate. He also asked about her parents and his mother and sister. They talked about her trip and about their schedule for the next day. He also tried to give her a crash course on press relations and public speaking.
There was something about the house though. The Avatar could not put her finger on it but there was something odd.
As she helped Tenzin clear out the table, she realized what it was. There were no photos around the house; a bit odd considering that the main residential building in Air Temple Island was like an ancestral home.
She brought the photos up with Tenzin, who was scooping some noodles into a bowl.
He had a ready explanation for it: Lin did not feel comfortable keeping up the old photos and had stashed them away.
Korra hoped her thoughts on the matter were not evident on her face. To her, it felt like the mysterious Lady Lin was tamping down the memories of the previous Avatar, of the Air Nation.
She was then surprised when Tenzin added slices of meat on the bowl he was preparing. “But you don’t eat meat.” She commented as she continued to dry the other dishes they had used that night.
“I don’t, but Lin does.” He had that odd smile on his face, the same one she used to see when they were in the South Pole and his wife is brought up.  He got a small piece of paper and wrote a note for this wife, sticking it under the bowl. He shared with Korra that with Lin’s odd hours, the least he could do was to have some semblance of a meal waiting for her at home. The Avartar idly marveled at the devotion that the airbender had for his wife.
Lost in thought, she thought heard someone padding down the corridors. Wary but sure that no intruder could have gotten in without causing alarm from the sentries outside, she slowly opened her bedroom door to peer in the dark hallway, all she saw of the figure was a bare foot entering the master bedroom.
So the Lady Lin was home.
---
The next day utterly sucked for the Avatar-in-training.
First off, she had to wake up at ungodly hour before the sun has risen because of morning meditation. Everything continued downhill from there.
She had blearily trudged up the steps to the meditation area. At her core, she was a waterbender. I rise with moon indeed. She basically failed meditation because she could not keep still, nodding off from time to time.
Later on, she ended up bruised and battered from the airbending gates, almost destroying the relic in frustration.
Nearing the main house, Tenzin and Korra were greeted by the appetizing aroma of baked bread. A passing air acolyte cheerfully greeted them and let the master of the house know that his wife has already left for work that day.
Seeing a note beside the tray of bread from the mysterious Lady Lin (Korra felt she ought to keep calling her that in her head because Mrs Tenzin doesn’t quite cut it). She thought Tenzin would have been delighted but he just paled.
“Oh no,” Tenzin fingered the note. “Lin’s still in a bad mood.”
Plain buns; heat in the oven before eating. Will try to get home in time for dinner later. xLin
“What,” Korra was skeptical. “How can she be – didn’t she bake this for you?”
“She did – but it’s a weekday, on a day she had duty, after a long night –.” Tenzin cleared his throat. “She’s got some pent-up stress,” He pushed the tray of perfectly shaped round pieces of bread. “Probably why she thought to punch it all out in the dough this morning.”
Korra decided then that maybe she’ll not get married if it meant dealing with these kinds of situations. Too taxing. Or maybe to find a nice non-bender husband who would hopefully not want to punch things to make himself feel better. Meh. It’s probably the lack of sleep, Korra inwardly scolded her thoughts.
The press conference did not go well either. Or well, it was as well as Tenzin thought it could be. Korra doubted it though. The airbender was ever the optimist after all.
The entire time, she could feel Chief Beifong scowling from behind her and Tenzin grunting in irritation at her left.
She could tell neither were pleased with the press conference.
---
The rest of the day was spent in City Hall as Tenzin completed some work as he will be off the next day.
Korra found out it was his turn to prepare dinner but with his current preoccupation, he opted to go around Republic City to take out food. She helped select some of the dishes, Tenzin nodding in approval (“Lin would like that too. She’ll be pleased to finally have another meat-eater with us.” Korra doubted but did not voice out her opinion.).
Reaching home (the new resident thought she needed to start thinking of Air Temple Island as such to acclimatize), Korra volunteered to set up the table.
Both the Avatar and the airbender had been half-way through the meal when soft clicks of metal could be heard approaching them.
Korra was surprised to see the Chief of Republic City’s Metalbending Police enter the dining room.
She barely had time to kneel from her seat to acknowledge her. “Chief.”
Beifong looked at her, appearing to be amused. “Avatar.” She drawled before she settled herself beside Tenzin.
“Aren’t you going to remove your armor?” Tenzin dropped his chopsticks and Korra noticed the subtle movement of the airbender’s fingers at the side of the metalbender.
Chief Beifong swatted at his hands. “I’m tired and hungry, Tenzin. Can we do away with etiquette, for now, please?” She reached for a bowl of rice and topped it with some thinly sliced barbecued meat while Tenzin poured her some tea. “I’ll clean up later.”
The Avatar felt like she was in a surreal reality. An alternate universe.
What was going on, she paused mid-bite as the two middle-aged benders just continued to eat.
“Did you even eat lunch today?” Tenzin was eying the woman beside him, who had not paused in alternately getting food to her bowl, plate and mouth.
“Eh, no – had to prepare my men for the press conference,” Beifong rolled her eyes. “Whose fault was that?” She wiped her lips.
“Before you even point fingers at me,” Tenzin pinched open a pau, letting the steam out. “That was Tarrlok, he wanted the conference to happen at that time.”
“Couldn’t you have influenced the other members to push back? We weren’t prepared – you weren’t prepared,” She turned her thumb in Korra’s direction. “She wasn’t prepared.”
This brought Korra back to her wits and continued to eat. She looked at their plates. If they did not slow down soon, there would not be any food left for the mysterious Lady Lin. She frowned as she faced her dinner mates who carried on with work discussions. She pushed herself to be more attentive – both to the door and to the conversation around her.
“By the way, I have the files ready for council approval regarding the budget.” The discussion turned to the damages that Korra inflicted downtown; she flinched but neither adult paid her mind.
“No need, Tenzin – I’ve talked to Suyin.”
“What does your sister have to do with this?”
“We’ll supply the raw materials and Su will reallocate some of her workforce from Zaofu to finish the renovation quickly.”
Tenzin’s eyebrows raised at this. “Why? There’s no need for that. Republic City can manage.”
“No, we don’t.” Beifong was calmly responding in between bites. “Think about it. If you go to the council asking for the publicly funded Air Temple cultural restoration budget to be reallocated to construction,” She waved a chopstick in to stress her points. “Specifically to the Earthen Fire Refinery for raw materials,” She saw the comprehension dawn on the airbender’s face. “Whether or not it was well-intended, that request will not look good to the council.”
“You’re right,” Tenzin exhaled deeply.
Korra slowed down to chew her food, wondering why it would not look good. Is it because they were friends? Their parents were friends?
“Korra,” The airbender called her attention. “You’re a bit subdued tonight. Is everything okay?”
The two adults before her looked at her in mild concern. She swallowed and just gestured to the food.
“Go ahead,” The metalbender handed her a plate of steamed pau. “Eat some more. It’s been a long day and you’ll need your strength.” The sharp eyes of the police chief caught her wince as she extended her arm to get the plate. “Tenzin,” She poked at the Avatar’s side none too gently, the soreness making her grimace. Beifong swiftly faced the airbending teacher. “Did you bring her to the airbending gates on day one?”
“Yes…” Tenzin ran a hand on his head slowly.
“Did you check on her after?” At Tenzin’s confirmation of not doing so, the gray-haired woman now turned her attention to the perplexed Avatar. “How many times did he make you go through the gates? Were you – tossed outside of the gates?” At the girl’s awkward shrug and affirmative response, she motioned her hand to the direction of the hallway. “Tenzin, get the salve from my dresser – you know that one, I’m sure.”
Korra blinked. The Chief of Police lived at Air Temple Island? Where? How come Tenzin never mentioned it?
Her quarters must not have been far as Tenzin was back in the dining room in no time at all. “But that’s how my father trained me…”
The Avatar’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. What’s up with these two – what about Lin?
“Your mother was there during your training and she was also there when my mother trained your father for earthbending.” Beifong accepted the pot of salve that Tenzin handed her. “Point being – there was always a healer at hand so training could proceed quicker without a lot of recovery time needed.” She offered the salve to the Avatar, instructing her on how to use it later that night. “Barring that, in the academy we used this balm that your mother created.”
“I’m sorry, Avatar.” Tenzin settled himself back beside Beifong, his contrite face visible. “I suppose I never considered that aspect.”
The Chief of Police’s words had an unusually protective tone. “Chin up, Airhead, it’s your first time to teach airbending and you couldn’t have known – you were obviously a natural at the skill.” She bumped his shoulder gently.
“It’s okay, Master Tenzin.” The Avatar gingerly opened the pot, sniffing the salve which had a comforting scent of eucalyptus and mint.
“What would I do without you, dear.” To Korra’s surprise, Tenzin kissed the metalbender’s cheek as she leaned on him. “And just call me Tenzin.” He directed the last part to the Water Tribe teen, who was hiding her dismay at the perceived disloyalty happening in front of her.
Beifong just patted his cheek then tugged his beard. “We all know where you’d be without me now – all of Air Nation would probably be bowing down to you as their patriarch.” She laughed at his horrified face. “What? Don’t tell me that wasn’t what you envisioned.”
“Of course not!” The man just scoffed. “You make the Air Nation sound like an underground cult…”
“Isn’t it just?” Good mood revived by food, Beifong used her bending to summon the metal tray containing the rest of the bread from earlier that morning. “Avatar, Mother mentioned in one of her letters that you enjoyed the fruit buns I sent last time. I tried something new this morning – just incorporated some of the island’s melons into the dough. Not sure if it turned out well.” She broke a piece off and placed it on the young girl’s saucer.
Fruit buns, fruit buns… Korra had a vague recollection about it, but what? “Just call me Korra, I’m just in training after all.” Was what she responded with though.
At Tenzin’s pointed stare, Chief Beifong raised an eyebrow. “What? I rather like it that she calls me Chief.” She gave a bark of a laugh at his frown. “Fine, fine, I was just kidding. Just call me Lin when we’re not in a professional set-up. We can’t have the rest of the public think I’m being undermined.”
Lin.
Hold up. Korra froze.
Beifong. Toph Beifong.
Korra wanted to slap herself, recalling the biographical pamphlets that one of the White Lotus members insisted she study back in the day.
Toph Beifong of the Gaoling Beifong family. The inventor of Metalbending had two daughters – one was the matriarch of the metal clan in Zaofu, Suyin Beifong and the other one was… Lin Beifong, current Chief of Police of the Republic City Police Department, head of the Metalbending Police, one of the partners of Earthen Fire refinery.
Lin Beifong who was currently tearing pieces of melon bread for her husband, the last Airbender, who was chatting casually about the types of food that the air acolytes purchased that morning for Korra’s polar bear dog.
Korra just blinked her blue eyes. So this was the mysterious Lady Lin, the last Airbender’s wife.
Lin Beifong, who despite being in her Metalbending police uniform, seemed to be quite comfortable at being a wife at home during dinner time, attentively listening with her husband about day-to-day household concerns.
Lin Beifong who offered to make Korra medicinal muscle-relaxing tea before bed to help her sleep.
It was a close call of looking almost like an idiot, Korra supposed, as she would have almost accused her airbending master of infidelity. This was why, the young Avatar figured as she took in the tea-drinking couple at the other side of the table, she needed to pay better attention to her history text.

Note: Sooo the plot ran away from me. So I’ll probably chop this into two posts; cutting it here for now. I hope this turned out okay; let me know if this is any good.

Chapter 10: Spotlight
Chapter 10: Spotlight
“Can you please remind me why we’re making this pit stop at the Southern Air Temple, again?” Lin inquired a little icily. Winter was in full effect this far south and Lin sat on Oogi’s back wrapped in several layers of furs Katara had lent them for their journey south.
“Dad asked me to drop these scrolls off so they can be filed in the big library they’re adding to the grounds of the temple,” Tenzin replied without turning around.
“Well, do we have to stay long? It’s freezing up here and I’d much rather get to our final destination sooner rather than later,” Lin barked at Tenzin.
Tenzin, getting a little angry at his wife’s tone turned to her and asked, “Is there something wrong? You’re not exactly treating me well.”
“Oh forgive me, Master Airhead. I’m just a little pregnant with your child, and I’m sitting on the back of this giant ball of fur, freezing to death. Oh and to top it all off, we have to make a pit stop where I’m sure we’ll be asked incessant questions about the child I’m carrying!” she spat at him.
Mustering all the patience years of meditation had given him, Tenzin drew a deep breath before he began, “I’m sorry we are stopping at the temple. We don’t have to stay the weekend. I’m sure Oogi can continue to Kya’s place immediately after the scrolls are dropped off.”
Oogi groaned in response. He didn’t sound too happy about continuing in the darkening, cold winter sky.
Lin acquiesced, “No, I don’t want to tire Oogi out and make him freeze up here. We can stay the two days. I’m sorry for my attitude. Pregnancy is really taking its toll on me.”
Tenzin climbed back to where Lin was and placed a chaste kiss on her lips.
“It’s alright love. I’m sure this cold isn’t helping any. We should be landing soon. In the meantime, is there any room for me under those furs?”
Lin pondered for a moment, then replied, “Hmm, I don’t know. That would require me opening the furs up to let you in. Not to mention, you’re probably freezing and going to make it cold in here.”
Tenzin didn’t wait for permission. He wrenched the furs open and slid in next to his wife. He wrapped his arms around her from behind and placed his ice cold hands on her protruding stomach. Lin shivered at his touch. He quickly wrapped them back up in the furs and they snuggled to keep each other warm while Oogi completed the well-traveled route to the Southern Air Temple.
Tenzin gently nudged Lin under the furs. He whispered, “Wake up, beautiful. We’ve arrived.” Lin stirred and blinked open. The sun was setting and the air was growing colder by the second.
“Thank the Spirits!” she exclaimed, “Let’s get inside in front of a nice warm fire. Maybe I’ll be able to feel my toes after a few minutes in front of the flames.” She bent a pillar for herself to use to descend from Oogi’s back.
Tenzin chuckled, “Of course, dear. As you wish!” He followed her, a bundle of scrolls and their overnight sack in hand. By the time he landed softly on the ground, an entourage of Air Acolytes had made their way to the courtyard where they landed. The group reached Tenzin & Lin and bowed in unison to them.
One of them stepped forward, head still bowed, and said, “Master Tenzin, Ms. Lin, my name is Devadas and it is my honor to serve you both during your stay here.”
Tenzin glanced at Lin and noticed the scowl, he quickly intervened, “It is a pleasure to meet you, Devadas. Thank you for your warm welcome.”
Devadas rose, but kept his eyes downcast, “Please, allow us to take your things to your rooms. Some of us can also escort Oogi to the bison stables so he has some shelter for the evening--”
“We’re fine carrying our own things,” Lin snapped, “Can you please just show us to our rooms?”
Devadas glanced towards Lin, then looked to Tenzin to see if he was also angry, he began, “Forgive me, please. I did not mean to offend anyone.”
“You didn’t offend us. We’re more than capable of carrying our own bags since we won’t be here that long,” Tenzin intervened before Lin could reply.
“Please, it is our honor to help, and we were hoping you’d consider staying here longer..”
“No, we’ll be here for the weekend and be on our way once Oogi is rested,” Lin interrupted, “Please show us to our room and Oogi to the stables.” She felt Tenzin’s hand on the small of her back and added a quick, “please,” to try and make up for her tone.
“As you wish,” Devadas acquiesced, “follow me.” Devadas motioned for the couple to go one way while the other acolytes led Oogi to the stables.
As the trio were walking towards the dormitories, Tenzin began, “Thank you again for your hospitality, Devadas. Lin and I really appreciate it.”
“It is an honor to have you both here. We are here to help in any way we can,” Devadas assured them.
“We’ll let you know if we need anything while we’re here for the weekend,” Tenzin assured him.
The trio arrived at the dormitory building. Devadas motioned to the left and explained, “Men’s rooms are that way, and women’s are the other. We share a washroom in the center of the building. I personally made sure there was a vacant bed for each of you in your respective parts of the rooms.”
“We’re not allowed to stay together,” Lin asked while rolling her eyes.
“It’s just for the weekend,” Tenzin whispered to her while rubbing her back.
“Whatever,” she retorted and stomped off away from the men.
Tenzin turned to their host and smiled sheepishly, “Sorry about that, the journey here was not the most pleasant we’ve ever had. I’m sure she’ll be fine once she warms up and gets a good night’s sleep.”
“Of course, Master Tenzin. Now if you’ll follow me, I saved a spot next to my bunk specially for you,” Devadas eagerly explained as he led Tenzin towards the men’s wing.
Oh spirits, Tenzin thought to himself, this is going to be one long weekend.
Tenzin awoke, but did not feel well rested. Devadas had kept the two of them up late talking about all the plans they had for the new library. He’d be lying if he said he didn’t wish he and his wife had continued to the South Pole last night to avoid all that.
“Good morning, Master Tenzin!” Devadas greeted cheerfully.
Tenzin drew in a deep breath, remembering that this was just for the weekend and he would survive. “Good morning, Devadas,” he responded, mustering as much cheer as possible.
“Will you be meditating with us this morning,” the air acolyte inquired.
Tenzin took a deep breath and replied, “Of course. I think I’m just going to check on Lin quickly, first.”
“I don’t think that is necessary. I left one of my best acolytes with specific instructions to ensure Ms. Beifong has everything she could ever need or want,” Devadas assured him.
“I’m very grateful for that, but I still would like to check on my wife,” Tenzin declared.
“Please, Master Tenzin, we would absolutely love it if you lead us in this morning’s mediation. I promise, Lin is better than fine. She is fantastic,” Devadas said while ushering Tenzin out of the dormitory and towards the East-facing plaza where they normally conducted morning meditations.
But before the pair could completely exit the dormitory, Tenzin got his wish as he saw Lin being ushered out by a group of female air acolytes. She appeared disgruntled, as if a good night’s sleep had escaped her and had only worsened her mood from the previous night.
“Tenzin!” she shouted, “Thank the Spirits you’re here too!” She quickened her pace to catch up with him, escaping from her wranglers.
“Lin!” he exclaimed, wrapping his arms around her as she flung herself at him. She tried burying her face in his chest, but he grabbed her chin and lifted her face so he could try to read her. Her brow was furrowed and her jaw was tense. She was clearly disgruntled by whatever had happened during the night or when she awoke this morning. Tenzin planted a kiss on her forehead to try to offer some comfort.
He cleared his throat and addressed the crowd of air acolytes that were waiting for him, “Please, proceed to the plaza. I will be there shortly for meditation.” The air acolytes bowed in unison and followed his command, quietly.
“What happened,” he inquired once they were the only ones left in the dormitory.
Lin huffed, “I was sound asleep because I was planning on resting for a while longer today after traveling last night, when I was prodded awake by those insufferable acolytes.”
Tenzin couldn’t help a smile from appearing on his lips, “Is that so?”
Lin rolled her eyes, “Yes! They were trying to wake me gently, but it felt like they were just trying to be the first to rub my belly and feel the baby kick, and all to get me to come meditate with them!”
“Ah, well, I can see why your mood hasn’t improved much since last night then.”
“No, it hasn’t. In fact, it may be a little worse even. They all started blabbering about how I needed to get up to meditate because it’s good for my health and in turn is good for the baby. One of them also mentioned something about --”
Her story was interrupted by Tenzin’s mouth covering hers. He knew she was upset, but that she wouldn’t be forever, especially if he could try to make her feel other strong, passionate emotions. Lin tilted her head up more, granting him full access to her mouth. Tenzin took the opportunity to slip his tongue inside her mouth. He pulled her as close to him as possible and let one of his hands slide down slightly, cupping the curve of her backside. After a gentle squeeze, he pulled back and let her go while they caught their breath.
“Well, hopefully that calmed you a bit. Now, go back to bed and get some more rest. I’ll come get you when meditation is over,” Tenzin explained.
Lin blinked at him for a moment, collecting her thoughts, then chided, “I know what you did just now, and that was plain cruel, especially since we won’t be alone till we leave the temple.”
Tenzin smiled at her and smoothly replied, “I have no idea what you’re getting at. I’m late for meditation. I’ll see you soon.” He left her standing in the hallway as he sauntered out of the building to see to his duties.
“And here we plan on holding scrolls devoted to the Avatar and his past lives. We already have quite a collection of tales about Master Aang, and we’re hoping to get more about him and his past lives soon,” Devadas rambled on and on as he was showing Tenzin the refurbished library the acolytes were working on restoring. He hadn’t noticed Tenzin had stopped listening to most of what he was saying a while ago, and continued on with the tour. Tenzin was preoccupied with thoughts of Lin. He hadn’t been able to see her since breakfast, where her mood had improved slightly. He prayed to the spirits that she was doing well, for the sake of all those around her, as well as their unborn child. Devadas had finished the tour and was guiding the two men back to the cafeteria for lunch when another acolyte came running towards the two.
“Excuse me, Master Tenzin” the acolyte started, huffing and puffing trying to catch his breath, “but we need your assistance urgently. It’s your wife…”
“Lin!” Tenzin interrupted, “What’s the matter? Take me to her!”
“Right away,” the acolyte responded and took off the way he came from.
As the trio got further away from the library, they started to hear and feel the faint rumble of the ground shifting around them. Tenzin knew they had to be getting close to Lin. His idea confirmed, as they now heard Lin yelling as the ground continued to shift and split.
“Here we are,” the acolyte proclaimed, stopping at the edge of a clearing on the side of the mountain, not daring to get closer to Lin.
Tenzin immediately dropped into a defensive stance and started to assess the situation, ready to protect his wife if the need arose. He scanned the scene. He saw Lin facing off against two air acolytes, her frame clearly tense and rigid. The acolytes, both female, were trembling as they continued to plea with Lin, “Please, Ms. Beifong! This isn’t healthy.”
Lin stomped and kicked up a huge boulder from the ground. She shifted her weight and punched towards the boulder, sending it flying off the side of the mountain so it could crash into an adjacent one.
“I’m perfectly capable of practicing my forms, you ninnies!” Lin yelled back at them. She continued to move through different bending stances, kicking up more rocks and rock clusters, sending them flying around. The acolytes continued to tremble and plea with her to stop.
Tenzin stood up straight, realizing there was no danger, and inquired, “What is going on here?”
Lin swung around to face him with a rock in mid-air, ready to send it at the newcomers, and shouted, “Oh, don’t you start on me too, Master Arrowhead!” Tenzin gave her a quizzical look, unsure of why he was being admonished.
Tenzin turned towards the acolyte that had run to him and Devadas and interrogated, “Why did you come get us? Lin isn’t in any danger…” Tenzin glanced over at his wife again. She was still standing in the same pose with the rock ready to be flung if she were challenged by anyone. He noticed she was a little sweaty, despite the cool autumn air, and there were a few streaks of dirt here and there on her body and clothes. Tenzin also noticed the small swell of her belly and started grinning. His wife was perfectly fine, and so was his unborn child. Nothing was wrong, his heart rate can start decreasing now.
“Allow me to try to shed some light on the situation, Master Tenzin,” Devadas stated. He waved his hand, beckoning the two female acolytes to come towards him. The two women shuffled towards the men, not taking their eyes off of Lin for fear she might strike at any time. Once they were close enough, Devadas inquired, “Ladies, what is going on here?” Lin had decided to fling the rock away and approach the group, her face in a scowl.
“I’ll tell you what’s going on here,” she spat, “These two turtle-ducks were trying to interrupt my exercise!”
Devadas nodded, “Yes of course, as they should.” Tenzin whipped his head at the acolyte and had a look of pure shock on his face.
Lin stared daggers at him and spat, “Excuse me?”
Devadas explained, “They should stop you. I put Masami and Lawan in charge of caring for you and the baby while you were here. I had hoped they would be able to convince you to stay for the remainder of your pregnancy so they could be your doulas when your time came to bring the next airbender into the world.”
“Precisely,” Masami or Lawan, Tenzin wasn’t sure who was who, piped up, “We both have experience with bringing new life into the world. We have worked with expectant mothers for many years now and we know that this kind of exertion is not good for the baby.”
“They sent me to get you, Master Tenzin, to try to talk some sense into your wife,” the male acolyte chimed in.
“Sense? Why would he need to talk sense into me?” Lin continued to argue, “There is nothing wrong with me practicing a bit of earthbending!”
“But in your condition, --” one of the doulas started to argue back, but was quickly cut off by Lin again.
“My condition? What? Am I dying now? I didn’t realize growing another human inside of me suddenly turned me into some fragile piece of pottery that needs to be wrapped up and stored in a room for 9 months until the baby finally comes.”
“You aren’t pottery,” Devadas tried explaining, “But the next airbender you are carrying should be treated as such. His or her life is very important and sacred.”
“Oh, stop that!” Lin was seething now and the ground beneath them started trembling. “No one even knows if the baby will be a bender of anything!” Her fists clenched, causing cracks to form in the ground around them.
“Lin,” Tenzin spoke softly, reaching out to grab his wife’s hand in an attempt to calm her, “Please, take a deep breath.” He took a step closer to her, reaching an arm around her waist. Lin spun to face him. He stared into her pale green eyes and wanted nothing more than to make her pain disappear.
Tenzin placed a kiss on her forehead, then turned to address the acolytes, “Thank you for your concern for Lin and the baby.”
“What?” Lin exclaimed “You can’t possibly be taking their side in this!”
“I-I wasn’t,” Tenzin stammered.
“You just thanked them for what they did!”
“You didn’t let me finish what I wanted to say.”
“Oh, please! You won’t put these airheads in their places. You never want to step on anyone else’s toes!”
“Lin, please.”
“No. I’m done. I’m tired of being treated like this and I’m tired of everyone assuming my future child’s identity!”
“I know, but--” “No, Tenzin. Don’t argue with me. You know how I feel about that.”
“I do, and I’m on your side, always.”
“Now, I hardly think that wise,” Devadas interrupted the couple, “You have no training in these matters, Master Tenzin. Masami and Lawan know what they’re talking about. We should all trust and follow their advice.”
“If those two are going to continue to give unsolicited advice on your orders, then I’m outta here,” Lin declared and started heading towards the dormitories.
“I’ll be at the bison stables in 20 minutes. I’ll take Oogi with or without you, husband,” she called back.
“Look, I’m sorry for my wife’s behavior and I do really appreciate your concern for Lin,” Tenzin reassured the acolytes, “However, no one knows Lin better than herself, so I’m sure she is more than capable of exercising while pregnant. She loves the baby more than anybody does and I know she’d do everything to protect him or her. Please trust my wife’s judgement.” And with that, Tenzin bowed his head to the four air acolytes then took off after his wife, knowing full well she would leave him stranded without his staff or Oogi.
Notes: Another update! I definitely got some Katara calming Aang out of the Avatar State at the end of this chapter. I figured pregnancy hormones in Lin would draw some pretty powerful emotions/bending out of her, so hopefully this all makes sense. I’m hoping to update again soon as this pandemic continues. Comments and Kudos are always welcome!

A chance to talk (fanfic)
Bolin and Korra gap filler, post Kuvira’s colossus attack and defeat.
--
Korra decided to not wait for the ferry, and instead used her glider to get over to the Air Temple.
She looked around. There wasn’t anyone about right now in the early evening to greet her, so Korra hoped she could just slip in without much fuss.
She moved over to the boys dormitories, and peered through the rooms.
Now, where was Mako? She didn’t even know where he was located, since she first healed him. She began to peer into one of the rooms
“Korra!” She heard a familiar voice say, and she noticed Bolin bound towards her.
He scooped her up into a big bear hug and swung her around.
“Hey, Bolin!” Korra said, smile bright as she hugged her friend back whilst she was twirled around.
Bolin dropped her to the ground. “Y’know, considering that you’re meant to be living here, I haven’t seen you much.”
“Yeah. I’ve been doing early mornings and nights overnight in the refugee camps, if I’m not helping Raiko out with the spirit portal or talking or leadership things.. I’ve not had a chance to be here.” Bolin gestured to them to move to the small courtyard of the Temple complex.
They sat on a bench as Bolin nodded in time to her speech.  “I get it. Opal’s out helping the refugees so I don’t see her much either, as I’m staying here to help move the rubble. If I’m not doing that, I’m trying to make sure Mako doesn’t do something stupid like ‘go back to work,’” he said, mimicking air quotes.
“He’s not trying to, is he?”
“Yeah. He’s getting better everyday, but he only blew himself up like five days ago, I think the city can survive without him for a week or so whilst he gets some rest. Try telling him that though,” Bolin said, then tutted.
Korra snorted. “I bet that’ll be hard for him, knowing how he is. But where is he? I was gonna check up with him.”
“He’s sleeping. Uh, the pain keeps him awake at weird times. Another reason he shouldn’t go back to work,” Bolin added, then paused. “I suppose I could wake him—“
“Oh, don’t bother. I’ll catch him another time,” she said. She hadn’t seen Mako since the first night where she’d helped heal his arm, until Kya took over. Since then, the only thing she’d heard was that he was doing better, but it would be nice to check if he was still in one piece with her own eyes. “It’s great to see you though, Bolin.”
Bolin beamed. He always had a way to bring cheer to any tense situation. Even ones when nobody wanted him to. “Yeah! Soon, I’m sure, things will get back to normal. It’d be nice for all of us to just hang out again, all as friends”
Korra smiled. “Yeah,” she said, and exhaled loudly. Bolin cocked his head to the side, so she decided to continue. “I feel like I’m a bit of a crummy friend though. I didn’t speak to any of you for three years, and I haven’t seen Mako since he almost died, you and I have barely had a chance to chat, and me and Asami… well, I need to talk to her, I guess,” she said. She cut herself off from saying more as it wasn’t as if she was keeping her feelings secret— she would happily tell Bolin— but that she wanted to discuss them with Asami first.
Oh, Asami. Her heart seemed to beat more heavily when she just thought of her. They had a memorial for her father coming up soon, and Korra wasn’t really sure that was the place to have a heart to heart with Asami about her feelings for Asami. Feelings she suspected that Asami reciprocated. Or at least she hoped strongly. Why was this all so difficult and confusing to navigate through?
“Aw, you had your reasons for not speaking to us, and that’s good enough,” Bolin said. “And you’re here now, and we’ve got all the time in the world. There’s Varrick and Zhu-Li’s wedding soon, that’ll be a good party time for all of us. That's like, less than two weeks away now.”
The wedding was a good shout. “Yeah, you’re right. I think I need to stop worrying about doing everything in time.”
Bolin smiled, then hugged Korra again, squeezing her as he lifted her off the ground. “Hey Korra. I just want you to know that you’re amazing. Remember when we dated that one time? Well, you didn’t think it was a date but I did?”
“Um…”
“Well everything I said still stands! You’re totally funny, buff and talented, and amazing in every way and I’m so glad you met Mako and me. You changed our lives in every way. I’m happy to have you as a friend.”
Bolin dropped Korra as she beamed. “Bolin, likewise. You’re amazing as well, you know that?”
“Well, I am the only lavabender.”
Korra laughed, but then drew him into a hug. “You’re amazing as a friend though, as well. I’m happy to have met you too. I know I can count on  you.”
He pulled away and wiped his eyes, and sniffed. “Aw, Korra. Making me emotional.”
She didn’t apologise, just patted him on the shoulder. She sighed. “This really was a flying visit, I have to go see Lin now about security.”
“Flying visit. That’s funny. Because of your glider,” Bolin said. Korra laughed, but Bolin continued, “I’ll tell Mako you dropped by.”
“Yeah. Tell him I hope he gets better soon. And if he tries to go to work tell him I’ll beat his ass.”
“Gotcha,” Bolin said, and saluted.
She used airbending to get herself to the top of the temple tower, waved goodbye to Bolin, before she glided out of the island.
Korra had all the time in the world. She didn’t need to work everything out just yet.
---
So, this is a bit of canon gap filler. Why not give Korra and Bolin a heart to heart in the finale, canon? Well its because clearly it happened before the wedding. I also want to explain away the implication that they just didn’t interact with eachother until the wedding, my explanation is that they ‘saw’ each other but they didn’t have a chance to talk to each other. There was a destructive invasion they’ve all got shit to do.
