linden tree, 11:58pm
“Thought I’d find you out here, sweetheart.”
Henry turns, like he always does, at the sound of Alex’s voice – a smile already tugging at his lips. Alex is flushed, buzzing off the energy of the crowd inside and the chocolate fountain June insisted on having this year. He’s so bloody beautiful, and even years after their first kiss, Henry is still left breathless more often than not. He hopes that never changes, hopes he’s always as excited to see Alex as he is right now.
Henry leans more firmly against the linden tree and holds out a hand for Alex, wanting him closer, wanting contact. Alex comes closer, willingly tangling his fingers with Henry’s before tucking his face into the crook of Henry’s neck. Henry locks his knees to stop them from dumping both of them in the snow.
“It’s likely my last chance to be here on New Year’s Eve,” he explains, stroking a hand up Alex’s back, “It’s the end of an era really.”
“Mmmm,” Alex hums, burrowing closer. “We’ll just have to make a new tradition next year then.”
“Best start planning now, love.”
The muffled noise from the party becomes suddenly louder – it must be the countdown. Alex pulls back and looks at him and Henry is lost, drowning in the warm chocolate gaze of his boyfriend.
“Ready for another year?”
“With you? Always,” Henry murmurs, moving his hand up to cup the back of Alex’s neck.
Alex snorts, but it's a fond sound. “You’re such a sap.”
“I learned from you. Happy new year, love.”
“Happy new year, baby,” Alex says, before pushing onto his toes and kissing Henry the way he always does, all enthusiasm and warmth. Henry holds him close and returns the kiss, letting himself relax into the sensation.

"The Oath of Omladina under the Slavic Linden Tree is the eighteenth of twenty paintings from the Slav Epic and by this stage the artist is closing on the present day.
Having initially started way back in the 6th to 8th century with the first installment, Slavs in their Original Homeland, Mucha would work his way through a collection of significant battles and cultural events in order to explain the key moments in the lives of the Slavic population. He would now discuss a youth organisation known as Omladina who appeared in the 1890's, which was actually about when Mucha first came up with the idea of the Slav Epic project. This organisation would promote nationalist ideas and urged a revival of Czech values but they were later arrested and imprisoned after a short trial. The members of this group are captured within this painting, swearing allegiance to goddess Slavia in a patriotic gesture which allows them to join the group officially.
Slavia herself sits in the top of the composition within a tree which symbolises health and strength. The prospective members of the group carry out their tasks in order to become accepted into the group. The overall atmosphere is one of happiness and celebration, a far cry from the realities of being imprisoned in the years that followed. The strong tree which reaches out across the full width of the artwork will remind many of the symbolic value of the Tree of Life which appears in many different religious scriptures and was also famously the inspiration for a memorable artwork by Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt. There is certainly a joyous atmosphere which is deeply contrasted with other parts of the series, such as battle scenes and depictions of key figures approaching death."

I love when the linden trees are blooming. It's so nice to walk under them, smelling the flowers and hearing the muffled buzzing of all the bumblebees (less nice to see all the dead bumblebees under the trees).
Anyway, tomorrow I'm going away on a very short vacation to visit my friend in Vingåker. I'll be back again on Sunday.

Ok THIS is amazing. It smells JUST like the tea, and it’s only around $25 or something. I’ve got their linden perfume and baby powder roll on and they’re my signature scents. I have “kitten fur” on order, it’s supposed to smell sweet and earthy, like a kitten. 🐈 I really want to get their honeydew melon and watermelon ones next.

Morning in the garden
Morning in the garden
Oh, what a tiny little harvest this morning. 😁 I went ahead and picked our single patty pan squash. It’s supposed to be all yellow. This is the size we like them at best. Summer squash are supposed to be more productive the more you pick them, but right now, I’m not even seeing any more female flowers. This is the most raspberries we’ve had yet. Usually, I get to pick one or two in the…

Steeple of St. Ursula with a linden tree in front of it.
Linden trees are often planted in town and village centers in Germany as these trees are of cultural significance. Linden trees were often planted as Peace tres after wars. To the ancient Germans Linden trees were sacred as they were associated with the goddess Freya.
