i think you said in response to a previous ask that octavian and antony are a Worse version of the brutus and cassius gladiator-statesman dynamic, and that octavian and agrippa are a different thing that wasn't relevant at the moment. i was wondering if you meant that octavian and agrippa are a thing outside the gladiator statesman dynamic (and if so, any ideas on why that is?) or that they were a different version of that dynamic?

octavian and agrippa are thing outside of that dynamic! this is, ofc, a YMMV type of thing, this is very much getting into creative/thematic nonsense that I like to play with as someone who makes comics

but basically the cut off for the statesman-gladiator/politician-warrior dynamic is philippi. things get hazy leading up to philippi because julius caesar has already eroded a core element to rome's structure, which is that it's made HIM the focus point of politics. there is no longer room for horizontal alliances of power amongst men vying for prestige, there is only room for vertical loyalty (so like, a more extreme version of patronage and bossism politics) (and disloyalty! because you get stabbed if you make people unhappy!! you make your body one with the state and people will let you know what they think of you. and the state.)

so by the time octavian wins, standing on top of everyone else, the general power structure of rome has changed and it's not going back. it looks the same, and people are going 'nooooo it's still a republic, LOOKS like the republic!' while dragging around decayed corpse, but it's different.

octavian and agrippa are co regents, with octavian as the clear head of state and agrippa, who is borderline unwell in his devotion to octavian, and somehow it worked for them. like, for them specifically it balanced out into a partnership.

in theory, this kind of dynamic (with a domestic politician and a general to enact imperialist policy) would be the blue print that would continue down, and boy did they try. tiberius and sejanus. caligula and macro. good grief. the system of relationships and obligations that allowed this kind of dynamic to show up frequently in the republic falls apart here because power corrupts, baby, and with a state assuming a body, there's no way that power is going distribute itself. everyone is going to want to be that body. except agrippa, who was devoted to octavian, but you can't. replicate that kind of intimacy even if you want to.

so it LOOKS like a statesman-gladiator dynamic, but they're really just co regents in practice, but the actual framework is closer to a king and his knight. they are also. incest adjacent. ground zero for the incest circus that happens later? or maybe something else.

basically the logic for that is the way that octavian kept trying to get agrippa into the family tree to make agrippa his heir prompted this kind of. increasingly more insular behavior. AND THIS TOO

additionally, I think proximity to octavian-imperial rome dooms a lot of people. agrippa dies before octavian, tiberius' character goes on a definitive downward arc. brother-pairs as rulers, caligula's hellenistic tendencies and the incest allegations with his sisters, the twin-ification of pairs--

Will I ever expect Nintendo writing a Ganondorf who's trying to break the curse and end the cycle? No. I simply think their faithful adherence to the nature of fairytales about the knight rising up to face evil and save the princess is simply that strong. It's a classic (in the most literal sense cite Perseus and Andromeda). It's why I don't believe in a playable Zelda until I see it with my own eyes.

While the earnest nature of providing interesting spins on this millennia old formula is rather endearing, I would welcome earnest breaks in turn as well. Yet until I see it, I simply won't be holding my breath for when it comes.

So what if I told you that Lu Guang has been living on "borrowed time" with Cheng Xiaoshi as far back as the very first episode in season 1?

Tl;dr thoughts and other sidetracks below the cut:

One: Xiaoshi lamenting to Lu Guang if "high-fiving" was the only way for them to maintain contact with each other when he dives.

If they had been at this gig for a long time, surely Xiaoshi would have already known this (or at the very least, have experimented other methods, maybe, if he suspected they could go about it another way?) That is not to say that the two of them hadn't been running a legit photo studio business prior to this (definitely feels longer), but the fact that Xiaoshi questions this did come across as being unusual to me, unless it was something "fairly recent" to him, and he was still slowly getting the hang of it. But a much stronger evidence would be:

Two: The rules set by Lu Guang as a condition of their partnership, specifically the second and third rule: to "change nothing", and "let the past and future be". Would Lu Guang have been so insistent on imposing such restrictions on Xiaoshi, had he not already experienced losing Xiaoshi once and wanted to rein Xiaoshi in from acting on his own? And why did Lu Guang feel the need to do so?

-------- Sidetrack thoughts #1: Was Xiaoshi even aware of his powers before Lu Guang came into the picture, or did it only manifest when Lu Guang entered his life? As evident in episodes involving the police, it suggests that in this universe, ability users are an abnormality and not public knowledge; they fall under urban lore and internet rumors, with whispers about a "photo studio run by a witch who can perform magic".

Did Xiaoshi accidentally jump into a photo one day and freak out, only for Lu Guang to assure him by outing his own abilities? (I can't see Lu Guang willingly volunteering that information to Xiaoshi unless something had forced his hand, esp given the above assumption it's not knowledge a layman should possess.) --------

I feel, the reason why Lu Guang holds Xiaoshi so vehemently to the rules would make sense if we consider that Lu Guang sees Xiaoshi as an "unpredictable node".

As far back as S1e3, we can tell that Lu Guang was able to "see" far ahead enough in the timeline that Xiaoshi had leaped into, to know if the future of that timeline had been altered or not. Example: little changes that Xiaoshi did (making a slam dunk) were inconsequential enough that Lu Guang could tell Xiaoshi it's fine, and the future remains relatively unaffected. But Xiaoshi changing a "key node" in that timeline (helping the losing team win), had drastically altered it to the point that Lu Guang tells Xiaoshi he doesn't know what's going to happen next. Why? Because the timeline had already branched out into a parallel universe, so to speak. And no longer holding on to the photo of the "right" universe - a new universe that Xiaoshi had inadvertently just created - meant Lu Guang no longer had the power of foresight.

Getting back to Lu Guang's real predicament, I suspect Lu Guang has been living in a timeline where he is unable to "see" Xiaoshi's future because he hasn't known a future where Xiaoshi has been alive for this long.

Just because Lu Guang is now in a timeline where Xiaoshi didn't die before 0913, it doesn't mean Xiaoshi is safe in the present universe - the same thing happened with Emma; while she didn't die in the hands of a kidnapper, she still died by falling off a building. And that's why Lu Guang has been rather protective of keeping Xiaoshi out of trouble, but I also speculate hard, that he doesn't want to further "destabilize" the current timeline and create more obvious time ripples that will draw attention to them, because... Lu Guang knows Xiaoshi should not have lived, and that they're being hunted.

Xiaoshi, the "abnormality" who is causing all the splits in time due to his unpredictable nature, would make the absolute antithesis to the new antagonist, who seeks to merge all the universes into one single unchanged ending. -------------------------- Sidetrack Thoughts #2: Since when was Lu Guang able to time travel on his own anyway?? My personal hunch: his time leap abilities were not his own, but from Cheng Xiaoshi of the parallel universe where he died. The scene before Lu Guang jumped back in time showed bloodstains on his shirt, suggesting that he had contact with Xiaoshi prior. This would mirror what we saw between Xixi and Qiao Ling, with Xixi's powers being transferred over to Qiao Ling through contact, and Qiao Ling briefly able to see all the memories of the people she had previously read.

If ^ proves to be true, what does that mean?

That Lu Guang is unable to time leap UNLESS Cheng Xiaoshi dies. He does not have the ability to do so on his own. This also means that for as long as Cheng Xiaoshi is alive, Lu Guang will not have the means to time leap on his own or dive back into the past. Which brings me to:

Sidetrack thoughts #3: This image makes me reallllllllly wonder if Lu Guang had already gone back in time to save Xiaoshi multiple times, which would make Lu Guang wanting to stabilize the current timeline even more valid and tragic. ---------------

Is there any light at the end of the tunnel? Frankly, such stories seem destined to head down the tragic/bittersweet end. Either: 1) Lu Guang dies so that Xiaoshi may live; 2) Xiaoshi dies anyway; (bonus 2.5: It's a combi of both; Guang tries to die to save Xiaoshi, but Xiaoshi pulls an "uno reverse" card on him and still dies as he was meant to, this time making Lu Guang promise not to try and save him again.) 3) Nobody dies, but they end up being apart. Lu Guang OR Xiaoshi discovers that in order for the both of them to survive, he would need to go further back in time to reset the past so that they never cross paths in the first place. This would mean one would likely forget the other entirely, and they would become nothing more than passing strangers. I kind of hope if it's headed for tragedy, that this option will be picked over the other two because I find death for melodrama too contrived a plot, but also FML. But what if... there is an option 4? A possibility for an actual good end where they can all be happy together and nobody dies? I'd like to think that if they could give others their happy end then surely they'd be able to find a way to happiness themselves! One such end-game could be them defeating the bad guy and branching out into a new universe yet again, but forever losing their abilities and stuck living in that timeline (where abilities do not exist) for the rest of their lives, no longer able to return to the time they had jumped from or knowing what their future will entail. But it's fine, they'll make it work because they have each other, 完结. cue ED and everybody claps, believing that perhaps they are now happily living in our universe.

amazes me that people can remember information about routes in pokémon games. like ‘i loooove route 217 ❤️’ ‘route 209 has such a banger theme!!!’ ‘have you made it to route 225?’ ‘you can find this rare pokémon on route 210!’ bestie those are numbers. those are just numbers to me how do you remember which area is which. i think i have a general idea of most of them but i still have to look them up every time i need to refer to them in conversation

Christopher Nolan making movies: I'm gonna make a film that is so confusing and non-linear

#just watched memento :DDDDD #which i think would be his first bigger movie? #but it was so interesting bcs there were a lot of concepts in it that are so visible in his later films #like watching that after watching almost all of his most recent films was such an 'aha!' moment #lthe whole black&white vs in-color to delineate which part of the story we're in #in memento: black and white is the beginning of the story and then in-color is the rest of the story going backwards #and then he uses that concept again in oppenheimer but b&w is the current events and color is everything leading up to that and after #like yeah its really confusing first time around because you dont know that fully yet but then at the end its like OH!!!!! #and then both also have other stuff interspersed btwn those two sections that you only reallly understand by the end #and then with the plot going backwards. that was the same as tenet right? #like starting with the end of the story and them ending with the beginning of the story #i cant remember inception well enough atm but im sure it has traits of memento as well #his movies are like puzzles ig! like you really have to keep track of all the details and what takes place when #i think theyre really fun bcs more and more becomes clear to you #im not sure what the most confusing nolan movie is hmmmm probably tenet or inception right? #oppenheimer: much more clear in general since its following literal historical events but just in a non linear manner #the only real reason i found it a bit confusing is bcs i didnt know a lot of the characters and also was trying to figure out the timeline #and then interstellar is more just confusing in concept bcs it has to do with time in the 4th dimension and all that #but i think the story is pretty understandable its just hard to wrap your head around the different time/dimension concepts #then again....ive watched it probably more than 4 times by now! I've had to make a spreadsheet to keep track of the vignettes. and I'm pretty certain over half this book isn't going to be about Conall and Arlo. This format really gives me room to play with the whole time fuckery that happens around Arlo so the connections between sections are going to be more about themes vibes and flow than linear story progression. Like I'll make a key that sorts all 7 ish timelines linearly within themselves and another that sorts them all into one timeline. Because a good portion of these happen concurrently.

Like, A scene might play from Arlo's pov and ten sections later you'll get it from Conall's. and while that's happening the two different versions of Asena are both doing their own thing at that same moment.

Also there's 2 Asena's now. one of them isn't happy about it but the other doesn't know that other version of herself exists.

#the one who isnt happy about it isnt happy because she knows she kinda doesn't exist. Shes a dream manifested by Arlo on accident. #Since he never stops thinking of her as his daughter he kinda breaks time and makes an alternate line where he just kills Conall #and raises Asena himself. #tbh the point of making it non linear is to let ther be explanations for a lot of things without someone having to say the explanation #Like why do werewolves love Arlo? well heres the scene where his mommy makes them for him and his brothers #also Haze gets to have a section in the Anger portion of the book to explain Why he told Rhiannon a prophecy he knew would cause #so much pain. #The king also gets a section but i dont think hes getting a name. #Its there more to be a show of what would have happened between Conall and Arlo if Conall was an enabler instead of a paragon #i think the whole. like Challenge with this exercise is making every single section work on its own and as part of a larger story #like i want people to be able to track the plots as the story goes on but not Need to. #like you could open up to a random section read it and grok it 100% #or read a few then put the book down for a few weeks and be able to continue from where you left off without too much confusion #thats probably the only way to keep this whole thing from being Obnoxious as hell.

Phantom hourglass is the only Zelda game I've played and I like it a lot!

Oh, man! You're gonna really like Any Other Zelda Game then, because that one was not good! That was like, the stripped-down theme park version of Wind Waker, except with awful touchscreen controls that barely worked and a recurring timed forced stealth dungeon. If you managed to like that anyway, you're gonna have your mind blown by the good ones.

I live in California. Shortly after the pandemic hit, the state decided to issue Emergency Allotments for the SNAP program - food stamps.

Anyone who was eligible to SNAP would get a supplement to bring them to the maximum amount.

Anyone who was already getting the maximum amount would also get a (smaller) supplement.

That started in, like, early or mid 2020. Drafting this in late October 2022, it hasn’t changed.

For all the flak California gets, it turns out that when there’s a freaking worldwide emergency, California’s public servants think that maybe the state should. Help people? That. Let’s do that.

(Is this perhaps more noticeable because I know a fair number of people who are 60+ and on fixed incomes? Probably. I also bet your community includes some retirees, some disabled folks, some people who are just financially struggling, for whom sudden extra expenses -- like paying a friend for gas money to take them to the store, instead of taking the bus during a pandemic -- were especially hard to manage. This affects the people you know, too.)

Every time I see people talk here on Tumblr about how their disability benefits went up slightly and then their SNAP benefits got cut, I can’t help but feel a little furious at whoever the hell their elected officials are. Because their state can do better than that.

Vote. Because your states can bloody well do better than that.

oooh, interesting question!

i think that, in general, i like peeta being hijacked in the same way i "like" a lot of the more brutal elements of the series. while i wouldn't necessarily call it narratively satisfying, i will say it effectively taps into what suzanne was trying to get across—that under a regime like the capitol's, nothing is really safe, not even your own mind. everything can be taken away, everything can be turned against you and the people you love, because bodily autonomy doesn't really exist, and like it or not, your brain is part of your body.

the hijacking is also a great (if very literal) example of what brutality and fear conditioning can do, even to the unambiguously gentle. even to the person you thought unshakeably good and loving. fear is one of the best tools an empire can use to achieve their ends, and it's how they turn peeta into a mutt. with fear. (i feel like we should all be taking notes from that...)

however, having re-read the books just recently and lately re-watched the movies more times than i can count, i also think that if you're going to completely break down your main love interest, you kind of have to do more to build them back up. i've said this before in other posts, but the story really misses out on letting everybody—including and, in my opinion, especially peeta—heal. we see flashes of it, but it's all really done "off camera," so to speak, which doesn't satisfy me at all.

that said, there are loads of great fics that play around in the empty space left by the story, so with those inserted into my own little mental canon world, it is possible to cobble together a satisfying ending to what i think is an overall good arc.

I've noticed recently that I keep finding things that are distinctly Cricket unfriendly. They're good in their own way but. Yeahh... Something about them isn't showable. I recently made two fics. One of them is only showable if I cut a bit out. The other is fine. Ahh the curse of liking dark media. Oh well. I can work around it sometimes as well. Friend comfort is important. Speaking of which I finally know what fandom has been setting your nerves on fire! Perhaps if splatoon has been activating you you should take a step back. I had to do that with Deltarune.
