Solo Exhibition

The objectification of “exotic” Asian female bodies, the perception and treatment of gendered and racialized bodies in Western society, and the historical-ethnographic background of the “European gaze” cast upon what is considered as “Far East culture” - these are the themes explored by Mai Ling, a Vienna-based association and artist collective.

 The name “Mai Ling” refers to a fictional figure invented by Gerhard Polt, a famous German comedian, in 1979. In his video sketch, she embodies a submissive hybrid and fantasised stereotype of Asian women, who has been silenced and made invisible in the collective European imagination - she was bought in Bangkok, wears a kimono and cooks Chinese food. She does not speak for herself; instead, all information about her is given by Gerhard Polt, her Bavarian husband.

 Even though this old satirical portraiture only offers a starting point, Polt’s normalization of the girl’s objecthood back in 1979 does not lose its relevance, as the same stereotypes and clichés are still pervasive today in contemporary culture. Artist collective Mai Ling re-narrates and re-portrays the once silenced “Mai Ling” with collective voices and multi-layered identities, in an effort to finally reclaim her speech.

Mai LingI Dialogues showcases the sheer diversity of the collective’s artistic and activist projects while generating dialogues with the museum’s space and rich collection, as well as incorporating voices from French context.

I'm struggling to articulate my thoughts rn so forgive me if this is worded badly but you're literally the most dedicated (?) lingy fan i know, not in a weird way but like when ever i introduce my friends to lingy and they ask me questions about her and her work i look at ur account first so <3 im so glad we share interest in the same artist bc ur amazing

🥺 thank u. she is unlike any other artist i know and draws inspiration from so many different places so her work fascinates me. her specific medley of academic background, religious upbringing, and interest in (what i consider) very niche sources of art make her creations very rich and layered. i love researching the references she makes and the samples she uses (both sonically and lyrically). so yeah you could say i’m a big fan lol. she’s just so intelligent and dedicated and intentional with every aspect of her work, and i admire that. the shit that she’s been through and her endless kindness to her fans/supporters/friends creates a personal connection as well. i want more people to be blessed by her music but at the same time i like the little underground bubble her fanbase lives within. i have no doubt she’s going to evolve and grow with every project, both as an artist and as a person, so i’m always excited to see what’s coming next (apparently something on bandcamp this friday!!!)

Ah-hahahaha! GOD no. The art of both the blog’s header AND PFP were made by the amazing and talented @lingi-15! (Not made specifically for this blog, but it was a good match for the blog’s general feel) I do wish I could draw like that, but I cannot just yet ^^;. Please show this person some support on their blog!

(Also, FYI, I’m just going to ask most questions to me in particular like this, just because I don’t find myself worthy to be hanging out with the Alt Bens 100% of the time :P)
