Headcanons

But about something random in LoZ the Korok Server asked me to make

"headcanons about the deceased mother in kakariko village (BOTW) maybe?"

her name was Suma, after the Satsuma fruit. Dorian and her met when he arrived at Kakariko, wounded (by the Yiga for his cover) and she helped treat him alongside the villages nurse/doctor

she'd never been outside the village, considering the Calamity, and while she knew self-defense she didn't have the experience or outside knowledge Dorian had so when he was repaying his debt and helping around till he was better he taught her some stuff and they got close. The Yiga struck after Cottla turned 3-4. While Dorian and the children were out. Kuma fought and defended herself to her very last breath

People in the village did hear the struggle but they were too late. All that was left behind was Suma's body and a Yiga mask. The village it was terrifying cuz it was like "ah fuck they know where we are" but Dorian got the message and started sending the Yiga intelligence to keep his family safe

Insecurity || LoZ:TP - Link x Reader

Word count: 1140

With a shake of your head you moved from your spot to mimic his sitting position. You took one of his hands in your own, while the other cupped the side of his cheek. “Hey, if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s okay, and if you do, that’s also okay.” You rubbed circles into his hand with your thumb, the action slowly wiping away the hesitation on Link’s face. “I’m here to listen, whenever you need me.”

A sigh of what you interpreted as relief escaped his lips, eyes closing and slowly leaning his forehead against yours. “I know.” He said, eyes opening to meet your gaze. “It’s just... it’s stupid.”

You enjoyed spending your afternoons like this, lying on the grass, feeling it tickle your skin as you watched Link work on the ranch. It had become a daily activity for you, and a chance to spend some extra time with the blond. Sometimes one of the goats would make it's way over to you, prodding the top of your head with it's muzzle. Link would use this as an excuse to approach you to return the goat to the rest of the herd, and if Fado wasn't around he would sit by your side for a while.

Not that Fado minded that Link would do this. The elf always made sure that the goats stayed where they were supposed to, so as long as he did this he could care less about what he did the rest of the time. Not to mention that Fado had taken quite a shine to you. After all, you stopped by everyday at the same time, and even though you came just to laze around, you'd always lend a hand if needed. Your company in the ranch was more than welcome.

On one particular day, Link was able to sit beside you sooner than usual. This surprised you, since getting the goats to move out of the barn (or anywhere else for that matter) was quite the task and took it’s fair share of time.

“That was quick.” You pointed out, propping yourself up on your elbows as you watched him sit down cross-legged at your side.

Link smiled at you. It was the usual grin, but there was something off about it. Was there something bothering him?

“They're cooperating today.” As always, Link was few with his words, saying only what was necessary and nothing more.

“Huh.” You said as you lay back down again, settling your hands on your stomach and closing your eyes to soak in as much of the sun's warmth as you could. “Odd.”

A grunt was Link's simple response, and the familiar silence settled between the two of you. A silence that only lasted a few brief moments.

Link whispered your name, as if afraid to wake you even though there was no possible way for you to fall asleep in such little time. You opened your eyes and peered up at him, curious. It wasn't often that Link would want to delve into conversation. He was always quite content with just sitting next to you and watching the clouds roll past above you. Even after you had confessed your feelings for him and had started a relationship, Link still preferred to keep his words to himself most of the time.

However, you had to keep in mind that it hadn't been that long ago that the two of you had decided to take that step forward. There hadn't even been enough time for the villagers to notice that you two were now more than friends.

“What is it?” You asked, turning your head towards the blond.

Link bit his lip, a question forming in his mind but... he seemed to lack the ability to actually put it into words. He stuttered, then hesitated and stuttered once more before giving up.

“Never mind.” He said after a while, averting his gaze.

Your brows lowered into a frown, now completely sure that there was something troubling him.

“You can tell me anything, you know?” You reassured him. “I promise not to laugh or judge or anything like that.”

He stared at you for a long moment, and you could almost see the gears turning in his head as he considered what you had said. His brow lowered, uncertainty written across his face. He was clearly doubting himself.

“It might be stupid, but if it’s bothering you then it matters.”

Link bit his lip once again, hesitating once last time before quickly mumbling what had him in such a state.

“I didn’t quite catch that, Link.”

“... ears.”

“Ears?”

Link nodded.

“You’re worried about... ears.”

“Not ears in general, just... my ears.”

His ears? You frowned, not understanding what could possibly trouble him so about his- oh. Oh. “You’re acting like this just because your ears are pointy and mine aren’t?” “Not just yours.” Link broke eye contact, gaze fixated on the grassy floor. “Everybody else’s. Mine aren’t... normal.”

Your frown deepened. “Are you trying to say you think your ears are ugly?” Link didn’t answer, but his silence was answer enough. You sighed, dropping his hand and cupping both sides of his face to gently lift it.

“Now you listen here.” You said with a stern voice. “Your ears are the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen and what made start crushing on you.” You turned his head from one side to another, pressing a quick kiss to the tip of each ear. “So don’t you ever think that they make you look ugly, because it’s quite the opposite.”

Link stared at you with a blank expression, cheeks slowly turning a bright red. He was at a loss for words, again, though this time you found it very amusing.

“I... hate to leave, but I have some errands to run before the sun goes down, so... see you later.” You felt a little awkward now after what you had said, but you didn’t regret it in the least. Giving one of his cheeks an affectionate little pat, you let go so you could stand up and be on your way.

You only managed to get halfway before you were pulled down by the back of your shirt. “Wha- Link, careful! What are y-” Link interrupted you by pressing his lips against your own. You were caught by surprise, and since the two of you had only shared a few kisses since starting your relationship you weren’t very sure on how to react. Still, only a few seconds later you leant into him, enjoying how your lips and his just seemed to fit perfectly.

Link was the first to pull away, the worry now completely gone from his face, a wide smile in it’s place.

“Thank you.” He said, before kissing you again. And again. And again.

Flying with Terrence

Every once in awhile, I have been moved to spend a blog post on a friend. So, joining Steve and Dan, is my wingman in gaming for at least the past dozen years, Terrence Miltner. There’s a lot of nerd/geek stuff in this one, so it’s up to you to follow through on links provided for clearer understanding.

I just spent the weekend of March 23-25 with Terrence and Mona in their lovely bungalow in Forest Park, Illinois, to attend Adepticon, a very large convention for wargaming. I’d gotten in late that Thursday night and we had an X-Wing tournament the next morning, but after a generous taste of Papa’s Pilar rum, I felt right at home. The next morning’s conversation was about what pop culture influences we had growing up. Mine was definitely Marvel Comics, his was somewhere between DC and Star Trek: TNG. All in all, I do believe the codes of behavior exemplified by superheroes have served us well.

So, I’ve played games all my life, but other than a semester of playing bridge, the gaming life took an hiatus to life in the mundane world: getting through college, getting married, going to work, making a home, and having a couple of kids. That’s where the gaming life took on a reboot. I had been playing virtual games on our Atari computer for a few years, but face-to-face, in-the-moment play is much more soul satisfying. That restarted when the boys brought home Magic the Gathering cards. This intriguing mix of collectible cards (yes, I’d had plenty of baseball cards in my youth) plus a role-playing game was in my wheelhouse. It also helped that I didn’t mind losing to sons who hated to lose.

During those post-Wonder years, the three of us went through quite a few variations of collectible card games (CCGs). Then came Mage Knight, followed by Hero Clix. I was pretty hopelessly sucked into gaming. When the boys eventually left for college and the Army, I was on my own. I’m fairly resourceful, however, and well-acquainted with the Internet, so I found out that you could play other “kids” in the backrooms of comicbook stores at night and on weekends. The community was probably ten-to-fifteen years younger than me, but that presented no barrier. I got a lot of practice and actually won some games sometimes.

So there’s Terrence, a couple of tables away, playing in a Hero Clix tournament, when he sees me looking at him with a wondering look. He mouths: “ALA?” And we both grin. To have someone to have so many things in common, a specialized language of gaming, makes going to work bearable when all else is in tatters. Over the years, we have introduced each other to an assortment of board games as well as collectible miniatures games (CMGs) as well as sharing the ups and downs of life while at work conferences as well as gaming conferences. We have supported each other during periods of unemployment as well which is a good test of friendship as some people think of the condition as contagious.

In 2015, I was honored to be part of his wedding party, where the theme was the wedding of Sherlock Holmes’s Dr. Watson from the most-recent adaptation, Sherlock, the one with Benedict Cumberbatch. (Terrence is in the middle of that photo, his brother Brian the bookend on the right.) There was no clinking of glasses to get Terrence and Mona to kiss. Your table had to solve a mini mystery! (I would like to make clear that the two of them need no excuses to kiss but they’ve been to enough weddings to know how to circumvent the obnoxious. They are well matched.)

For too short a period, we had a play group that met monthly to try out new board/miniature games or play old favorites. One night I remember well, for playing Battlestar Galactica, a few drinks and we were all role-playing the characters a bit too stridently but there was always a lot of laughter, to be sure. Winning is important but it isn’t the only thing.

Terrence, however, is a gamer of quite a different magnitude than me. Not only in terms of the variety of games played and amount of time playing, but in terms of conference attendance (the above photo of name tag collection should suffice as proof) in support of games and related activities.

He is a high-ranking member of an organization called Barfleet, which provides a service for the geeks, nerds, and fans of all flavors in the after hours of a convention.

He recently chaired Capricon after many years as a support person on various committees and has been involved in Worldcon, which facilitates the awarding of Hugos to the best science fiction works of the year.

Terrence has a gift for listening that aids his gift to being able to talk to just about anyone. We were having lunch at Fado in Chicago and decided to have Irish coffee. The bartender boasted that the whiskey was particularly special and Terrence was off to the races. After all, as a Barfleet host, he, too, is a bartender! After some technical discussion about favorites, we received a free shot of named whiskey. Later, Terrence spied the bartender fiddling with a bottle of Jameson that was like 100 years old or whatever. Yep, another free shot for Terrence and his friend. (As Terrence is wont to say, if you’re going to drink all day, you better start early.)

This gift really came home to me as we walked around the booths and corridors of Adepticon this year. (This was the next day, after we both had done abysmally at the Hoth Open X-Wing tournament.) He knew a lot of people and seemed determined in introducing game designers to vendors or podcasters, which is a growing edge of game development. He is an ambassador of gaming in every sense of that word.

He also is a true friend. I am blessed indeed.

Um fim-de-semana de festa e animação nas vizinhas Aldeias Históricas de Trancoso e Marialva

Nos próximos dias 25 e 26 de setembro, as Aldeias Históricas de Trancoso e Marialva recebem o Ciclo “12 em Rede | Aldeias em Festa”, este ano adaptado ao contexto de pandemia – com participação limitada e transmissão via streaming. Duas festas imperdíveis, que vão trazer mais vida e animação às duas localidades, oferecendo a habitantes e visitantes um fim-de-semana inesquecível.

Cerca de 20 minutos de carro separam as Aldeias Históricas de Trancoso e Marialva. Basta um fim-de-semana para conhecer estes lugares, no interior da região Centro de Portugal. Por isso, nada melhor que aproveitar as festas do Ciclo “12 em Rede | Aldeias em Festa” em Trancoso e Marialva, que este ano se realizam no fim-de-semana de 25 e 26 de setembro, para descobrir estas Aldeias Históricas, em clima de festa e animação.

O Ciclo “12 em Rede” chega à Aldeia Histórica de Trancoso na sexta-feira, dia 25 de setembro. Com o mote “Bandarra. O Sapateiro Contador de Histórias e Futuros”, apresenta um programa baseado na figura do mítico sapateiro, poeta e profeta. Bandarra deixou as suas palavras imortalizadas em trovas, nas quais fala do futuro de um povo que se há-de cumprir, e sobre quem Fernando Pessoa disse que “o coração não foi português, mas Portugal”.

Ligado à identidade do território, Bandarra faz parte da História e do imaginário desta Aldeia Histórica, que o celebra com carinho, lembrando versos das suas trovas como pedaços de memória e das tradições de Trancoso.

O Ciclo “12 em Rede” em Trancoso vai animar aquela Aldeia Histórica com atividades como urban scketch, degustações de pratos regionais, showcooking, uma visita guiada encenada e três performances imperdíveis, que juntam vários nomes do panorama artístico nacional.

No dia seguinte, sábado 26 de setembro e a apenas pouco mais de 20 quilómetros de Trancoso, o Ciclo “12 em Rede” visita a Aldeia Histórica de Marialva, celebrando “As Mulheres de Marialva”. A festa vai dar destaque ao papel que as mulheres da aldeia tiveram na sua herança patrimonial e cultural, com gastronomia, visitas guiadas encenadas e uma caminhada, terminando com um concerto de um dos grandes mestres da guitarra portuguesa, António Chainho, com uma grande mulher do fado, Kátia Guerreiro.

Devido à pandemia, a participação nos eventos será limitada e sujeita a inscrição prévia – mas as festas poderão ser sentidas e vividas em todo o mundo, via streaming, nas redes sociais.

AWS FargateだとNLB経由のClient IPアドレスは記録されない？ https://ift.tt/3cAzgQk

お久しぶりです。ついに在宅勤務になったstreampackのfadoです。個人的には会社の方が色々と作業等捗るのですが在宅なら人との接触7~8割減という目標が達成できそうでいいのかもしれません。出社もそうですがここ最近、当たり前のことがそうではなくなり、まだまだ厳しい状況が続いていくのだろうと思うと不安は拭えないですね。

今回は当たり前だと思っていたNetwork Load Balancerの挙動がAWS Fargateを挟むとうまくいかなかった、それにまつわるお話を共有したいと思います。

背景

Client側がfirewallのルールなどにより特定のIPアドレスにしかアクセスできないシチュエーションに対応するため、静的IPアドレスをサポートするNetwork Load Balancerを採用しました。

それに加え、アプリケーション側でログや統計の解析のためClient IPアドレスをそのまま保持したかったのですが、アプリケーションのログにNetwork Load BalancerのプライベートIPアドレスが記録されていた問題に直面しました。

調べても有力な情報があまり見つからなかったので色々と検証して解決にたどり着きました。同じく壁にぶち当たった方々のために参考になれば何よりです！

リソースと構成

検証環境はAWS上で構築しました。

Clientの送信元IPアドレス（以下 Client IPアドレス)

Elastic Load Balancer(以下 ELB)の種類の一つであるNetwork Load Balancer(以下 NLB)

Amazon ECS

AWS Fargate

Dockerコンテナアプリケーション: nginx (以下 AWS Fargate(nginx))

Webアプリケーション: nginx

NLBの詳細設定とAmazon ECSのセットアップ等は割愛させて頂きます。

原因

色々と調べた結果、原因はNLBの仕様によるもので、NLBのターゲットグループの種類が IPであることが分かりました。

NLBで設定するターゲットグループのターゲットの種類によって保持するClient IPアドレスが変わってきます。ターゲットの種類が、

1.インスタンス ID の場合はClient IPアドレス 2.IP の場合はNLBのプライベートIPアドレス

が保持され、アプリケーションに提供されます。

Amazon ECSにて起動タイプとしてAWS Fargate、かつNLBを利用する際、ターゲットグループが自動的に作成され、ターゲットの種類がIPとなります。

対処法

NLBのProxy Protocol機能を使い、Proxy ProcotolのヘッダーからClient IPアドレスを抽出し、Webアプリケーションに渡せるようにしました。

手順

まずはアプリケーション側でProxy Protocolに対応していることを確認します。サポートしていないとエラーが出ますのでご注意ください。

1.ターゲットグループでProxy Protocol v2を有効にします。対象NLBのターゲットグループから[属性の編集] -> [Proxy Protocol v2]の有効化にチェック

＊反映まで数分かかる場合があります。

2.AWS Fargate側のコンテナアプリケーションをProxy Protocolに対応させます。今回のアプリケーションはnginxです。

nginx.confのserverディレクティブ内を下記を追加

IPアドレス、CIDR、ホスト名を設定可能

指定されたIPアドレス以外からはCLient IPアドレスの上書きは許可しません

NLBのプライベートIPアドレスか、NLBのあるVPCを指定。セキュリティー上0.0.0.0/0は避けましょう

real_ip_header

AWS FargateのログにもClient IPを記載したい場合なら必須

Client IPアドレスを上書きする際に使うリクエスヘッダー

real_ip_recursive

任意だがセキュリティー上、あった方が望ましいです

set_real_ip_fromと一緒に設定

リクエストヘッダーにIPアドレスが複数ある場合どれを利用するかを設定

$proxy_protocol_addr

proxy_protocolを有効にするとClient IPアドレスがこの関数に格納されます

3.proxyされるアプリケーションでの設定今回のアプリケーションはnginxです。

自分の環境に合わせてserverディレクティブに下記行を追加します。

set_real_ip_fromはAWS Fargate(nginx)のプライベートIPアドレスを指定

real_ip_headerはAWS Fargate(nginx)で設定したproxy_set_headerを指定

real_ip_recursiveはonの場合、Client IPアドレスはreal_ip_headerで送られてきた最後のIPになります。offの場合、Client IPアドレスはset_real_ip_fromに指定されていない最後のIPになります。

結果

WebアプリケーションのnginxのログにClient IPアドレスが記録されていることを確認できました。＊グローバルIPアドレスは加工してあります。

追加検証

NLBはインスタンス IDを使用してターゲットを指定すると、Clientの送信元 IP アドレスが保持され、Targetに渡されます。せっかくなのでこの挙動も検証したいと思います。

構成 Client(http) -> NLB(8081/tcp) -> Target(80/tcp) ＊こちらの都合で検証時80ポートは既に使用済みなので8081ポートにしました。

プライベートIPアドレス: 192.168.2.253

NLB側

テストとしてClient側でcurlコマンドを実行し、Client側とTarget側でtcpdumpを実施します。

結論

ELBの一種であるNLBはターゲットグループの種類によって保持する送信元IPアドレスが変わります。

種類がインスタンス IDの場合は送信元IPアドレスがClient IPアドレスになりますが種類がIPの場合はNLBのプライベートIPアドレスになります。自分が想定したIPアドレスがログなどに記録されていない時は上記をご確認下さい。

Soundtrack para uma quarentena #20: Quarentena Singles Club Vol. 2

Mais dez reviews no saco (9, se forem picuinhas). Por isso, aqui segue mais uma dose de singles portugueses. Estes foram escolhidos com parâmetros específicos, como a data de lançamento, se já falámos do autor ou não, duração da faixa, o acorde com que a música acaba, local de masterização, e presença da cor azul na capa do álbum.

Alguns são recentes, que uma coisa boa no meio disto tudo é que se fecharmos músicos em casa eles aproveitam para produzir música. Curioso.

É de referir que desta vez já temos playlist no Spotify. Links nos nomes na mesma, porque os videoclips também fazem parte!

Maria Reis – Odeio-te

Se há música viciante nesta lista, é esta. Outras também são, mas esta é mesmo, mesmo, mesmo viciante. Já falamos de Maria Reis antes para referir que ela é metade das Pega Monstro. E isso nota-se, com algumas parecenças, pelo menos temáticas e emocionais comuns com algumas das músicas de um pop mais lento da banda. Mas a música afasta-se do modelo punk para se derreter num pop eletrónico e ritmado.

A letra é divinal. Nunca temos dúvida que estamos perante uma mensagem carregada de sentimentos. E são sentimentos que geralmente não associamos a break-up songs. Maria Reis consegue criar uma das melodias mais catchy e trauteáveis dos últimos tempos, juntamento com uma mensagem fresca e única. Definitivamente uma das melhores faixas do ano passado, pertencente a um álbum genial de que haveremos de falar daqui a uns tempos!

Filipe Sambado – Jóia da Rotina

Filipe Sambado é uma figura particular, no plano nacional. Anda ali numa zona sem nome concreto, algures entre a indietrónica, pop, uns toquezinhos de trap e RnB contemporâneos… Não é fácil de catalogar, e é por isso que é bom. Pôr etiquetas nas coisas só prejudica.

A faixa tem contornos épicos, com sintetizadores e cordas a entrar taciturnos música dentro. O que é irónico, porque a voz de Filipe Sambado é das coisas mais íntimas que por aí há, e a letra é uma homenagem à humilde rotina, estável e segura, com todas as dores e cansaços que essa apresenta.

A composição é marcada por ritmos quase desconexos e ansiosos, onde a interrupção constante da batida marca uma tensão forte, com a voz íntima mas forte do cantor a segurar a faixa. É uma boa faixa, que transporta sentimentos importantes e intemporais.

Selma Uamusse – HOYO HOYO

Já falei de Selma neste blog, e é com felicidade que falo dela novamente. Habituou-nos a músicas enérgicas, com ritmos bem marcados e enérgicos, com um conjunto de instrumentos a levar esse energia para a frente, e sempre com a própria da cantora no meio dessa tempestade com uma voz poderosíssima.

Esta faixa não desaponta, bem pelo contrário: usa esses mecanismos já bem testados, mas adiciona ainda elementos frescos. A linha de baixo que percorre a música é orgásmica, à falta de melhor palavra, e as harmonias vocais são deliciosas. Mas adiciona também segmentos onde a voz se transfigura em gritos potentes com uma guitarra a desbravar caminhos novos. Esta faixa tem elementos de rock progressivo, dir-se-ia. E funciona, muito bem. Dava um braço para ver um álbum inteiro de Selma com essas forças!

Keso x Berna – Divago

O Keso anda a dar-nos um tease imenso com o seu projeto “Sinceramente Porto”. Para sossegar espírito, deu-nos uma mão cheia de faixas. E que faixas. Mesmo que o resto das faixas sejam péssimas (yeah right) só estas já fazem deste o melhor álbum de hip hop em muito tempo.

Na “Divago” Berna toma o leme e conduz a faixa com toda a mestria possível. O flow é forte, e sabe-se modelar quando necessário, sem nunca ser repetitivo ou cansativo. Os jogos de ideias são aguçados e pintam imagens claras: O Palhetas pergunta: E novidades? / Algumas. / A expansão do turismo levou à extinção dos gunas / a era do selfinismo que faz mascarar as rugas.

E o refrão. Oooh, este refrão. É genuinamente divertido, e ainda assim soa ameaçador, com um flow jingão brilhante. A faixa fala do deixar-estar, e do como o não fazer nada é aceitar a mudança, e o refrão só o refere de forma mais pessoal e direta. E indireta.

É uma malha absolutamente incrível, com uma mensagem importante, rimas fluídas, e uma produção esmerada de 5 estrelas. Não sei o que estão aqui a fazer. Vão ouvir a faixa, e quando acabarem ouçam outra vez enquanto esperam pelo lançamento do álbum. We are Porto!

S. Pedro – Apanhar Sol

Pode parecer malévolo, se calhar sádico até, trazer aqui uma música cuja mensagem é “hey, meu, sai de casa e vai fazer coisas!”. É o que é, e a minha desculpa é que a música é mesmo muito boa.

A guitarra conduz a melodia, e a percussão entra logo a seguir. Mas a verdadeira estrela da faixa são os pormenores espalhados pelo percurso que adicionam camadas genuinamente bonitas. As melodias com múltiplos instrumentos, as harmonias vocais, os pequenos efeitos que completam a base da música. Todos esses pedacinhos são espalhados habilmente para construir um universo subtil e cheio de personalidade.

A mensagem em si é bonita também. Ou seria, se pudéssemos sair. Mas as letras divertidas brincam também com uma melodia que se diria divertida. A letra não se leva demasiado a sério, mas a melodia também não. E ainda bem, que com este tempo de quarentena quem é que leva a um pedido de Vai apanhar sol a sério?

Janeiro feat. nāga – YA TA TD BEM

Há uma coisa que me irrita nesta faixa: não a consigo ouvir sem me lembrar de “La Tournure des Choses” de Jacques. Será que é influência direta? Não sei. Mas consegui a certa altura abstrair-me disso, nem sei como, e ouvir, de facto, a música. E é deliciosa.

É profundamente introspetiva, como não podia deixar de ser. Já na review à “Solidão” na Quarentena Singles Club Vol. 1, referi que Janeiro tem este poder de capturar sentimentos extraordinariamente específicos, e esta faixa só vem sublinhar isso. É uma faixa que combina um frio existencial com um aninhar quente. É uma faixa de olhar pesado e cansado. Está tudo bem, mas não está tudo mesmo bem, mas vai-se indo, porque é isso que é. E há, no meio de tudo isto, um desespero por um calor real. A produção só sublinha essa dualidade, com um trabalho fenomenal e fresco de nāga.

Não há muitas músicas que consigam dar-me um calafrio na espinha. Esta consegue fazê-lo tantas vezes quanto a ouça.

Luís Severo – Primavera

Luís Severo é um prodígio da música portuguesa. E esta faixa é tudo o que se poderia querer.

Tem uma ambiência clássica, toques de folk e fado, até, mas ao mesmo tempo deixa que a melodia se complete com sintetizadores. A própria construção da música brinca com isso, com um refrão que ameaça um shift tonal profundo, que cai por terra com um regresso a uma melodia delicada e um cantar suave de só me reconheço em beijos teus.

É uma canção lindíssima, e não há outra forma de o dizer. É uma daquelas faixas que aparece na vida e que, se soubermos abrir o coração, no-lo encherá, e o deixará a transbordar.

Agora, só gostava de saber: tem um significado político ou não?

Using a Single DIY Globe Modifier for Simple, Stunning Portraits

It’s not often I get to shoot very simple, clean white light shots, but in a recent shoot the model asked if she could get some updated ‘Polaroids’. For those of you not familiar with the term when used in reference to a model shoot, it’s actually not the now-obsolete and ludicrously expensive single-shot film, but a request for very basic portraits of the model for their agency.

This ‘Polaroid’ term is a relic from the analog film days and it essentially now means shots that are un-retouched and with the model wearing very little makeup.

I was happy to shoot a few of these ‘Polaroids’ as it literally takes two minutes. You throw up some simple light, the model stands in for a couple of headshots, some three-quarter lengths and full body etc. You then send the shots with almost zero retouching over to the model and she then passes them on to her modeling agency so that they can be used as a reference point for those who are interested in working with the model in the future.

Tip: Just really quickly while we’re on this subject. If you’re a photographer selecting models from an agency, you really must insist on seeing the models ‘Polaroids’. In a world of amazing makeup and ridiculous post-production, you need to be looking at what the subject looks like without all of that. Failure to do so will result in you being caught out with a model with bad skin or worse.

So back to the setup. I knew that for these raw looking shots that the light had to be very clean and flattering and without many shadows. This way, the light and its shadows aren’t hiding anything and a soft light at least makes the model look her best under those raw conditions. Like I said at the start, I rarely shoot simple white light but I did have an idea that I’d wanted to try for some time and I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to do so.

Why You Never See a Globe Modifier Being Used

For this setup, I only used one light and the modifier I used was actually a DIY one. The modifier is essentially a very diffused globe that sits on top of my strobe. The resulting light from this throws light absolutely everywhere around the room, especially when pointing straight up. It throws light onto the model, onto me and all over the room that you’re in. You can see why this type of modifier is not often used, because as photographers we crave absolute control of the light and this diffused globe is not giving us any control whatsoever.

But we can use this one very fundamental flaw of globe modifiers to our advantage if we’re smart.

What Do I Need?

Firstly let’s see the DIY diffusion globe I was using. The globe itself is a simple FADO desk lamp that I bought from IKEA and its about 25cm in diameter. I then just removed all the wiring and bulb from the inside and it was ready to use in my photoshoot.

Once that was done, I simply mounted it to an old speedring with gaffer tape. A speedring, if you’re not sure, is the part of a softbox that attaches it to your light. Imagine if you removed all of the struts from a softbox, you’d be left with the speedring. You can either temporarily dismantle your softbox for the speedring for this setup, or just use a spare one so that you don’t have to keep re-taping the globe on each time. Speedrings are also really cheap depending on the strobe brand you use so it might be worth picking up an extra one anyway.

Surprise, surprise, gaffer tape for the win!

First Setup: Direct-Light

Now that we have our light ready to go, let’s take a shot of the model with the globe pointed directly towards her and see what the results look like. Here’s a diagram of the setup I used below.

Pretty straight forward setup. Point globe at the subject and take a shot.

Now let’s take a look at the resulting images from this direct light setup.

So you guys can see for yourself that although there nothing wrong with these shots, there is still a lot of shadowing going on, not only on the model but also the background as well.

You may actually like this look as it provides very clean and directional lighting that is still flattering due to its diffused softness. So if you’re happy with this, you’re done and you can X-out of here now…. but if you’d like to see a far more beautifying look without the need for any additional lights, read on.

Second Setup: Diffused-Light

Like I said earlier, the real beauty of this setup is to use its greatest flaw as its greatest strength. I mentioned that this diffused globe throws light absolutely everywhere, including onto the model, you the photographer as well as all over the room that you’re in. So here is the trick. By throwing up a couple of big white polyboards behind you, (or a big white sheet like I did), you’re effectively creating two lights. One light is the small globe that is a single point of light in front of the model, and the second light is now that big white sheet behind you.

Take a look at the lighting setup below and then I’ll go on to explain why and how this works so well.

In the above Diffused-Light setup we can now see the white boards behind the camera as well as the globe pointing straight up.

Now take a look below at some of the resulting images from this diffused-light setup.

Remember: the images below are from a SINGLE light setup!

Look at the strong edge of the shadows yet filled with plenty of soft light. Look at how this setup still creates highlights, as can be seen on the legs, and look at how there are highlights and shadows on the arms in the three quarter length shot. All of this results in a very flattering light because it cast shadows to create shape but those shadows are also incredibly soft.

As those of you who’ve followed my work for a while will know, I rarely shoot this type of bright white imagery, but even I have to admit that the light from this setup is absolutely beautiful! Plus this is just ONE light in a small room! This setup could really be used anywhere. Also, this setup only gets better the smaller the room you’re in and that includes home studios as long as the walls are white or at least close to white.

White Polyboard Substitute

I mentioned in the description of this setup that you could use white polyboards to bounce the light if you’re in a studio. These are just large sheets of 2×1 meter polystyrene that can be positioned around the studio to either block or bounce light. Most of us don’t have access to them all the time so a large white reflector or even a big white sheet is just as good.

Two Lights in One

So what on earth is going on here? How can we have defined shadows from a key light, as well as a fill light, but only be using a single light?

Here’s what’s actually happing in the setup. Light from the globe facing the model goes straight to her like any key light to create a strong directional shadow. The resulting look of this is just like the original shots at the top of this article where the globe was pointed directly towards the model without any white bounce behind. The defined shadow of this key light is due to the small size of the globe in relation to the subject.

But with the globe now pointing up, the globe’s light is also hitting the white boards/sheet behind you and bouncing back onto the model. This bounced light now fills in those shadows giving the illusion of an additional fill light.

This ‘two-lights-in-one’ effect of the bounced light has a double bonus too as that bounced light is now incredibly diffused after bouncing off of the sheet, plus it has lost some of its power due to bouncing and having to travel further. Both of these things make for the perfect fill light.

By The Way…

Now you didn’t hear this from me…. but I’ve been told that this setup can also produce some very beautiful black and white portraits… if you’re still into that sort of thing.

Closing Comments

The simple DIY globe modifier can produce some beautiful light in almost any space.

I love that I finally got the chance to try out this setup as it really does produce some utterly stunning light and in such a simple way too. I know there are a thousand and one ‘phenomenal’ single light setups out there, but ultimately most of them either involve an expensive modifier or simply require you to move the light to a different position around the subject.

This single light setup doesn’t require an expensive modifier as you can pick up one of these diffused globes very cheaply indeed, and with two minutes of tinkering you can have it on your light and ready to go. Of course, you can play with moving the light around the scene if you like, but I personally preferred the globe above the camera so as to throw any shadows directly behind the model. This worked particularly well as the subject was always engaged with the camera, but if you were shooting with the model looking away from the lens, moving the globe around could create some cool looks too.
