OVERKILL Guitarist To Sit Out Upcoming Tour For “Personal Reasons”
Overkill will hit the road this week with Prong, and with a slightly different lineup. Overkill guitarist Dave Linsk is sitting out the tour for “personal reasons” and will be replaced by guitarist Phil Demmel (Vio-Lence). Demmel previously filled in with Overkill in November 2021, so it should be a smooth-as-hell transition. Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading. “We’ve used Phil in the past…

March Madness: Get Mad about Invasive Species
Amy Rowe, Rutgers Cooperative Extension
Originally published in the Earth Day Every Day newsletter.
With spring on the horizon, it's time to think about invasive species.
First and Second Rounds: The basics
An invasive species is one that is not native to an area that causes ecological and/or economic damage or harm to human health. Many people associate invasive species only with plants, but there are also invasive wildlife, insects, and diseases. The US Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that the economic damages associated with invasive species in the United States is approximately $120 billion/year (2012).
Invasive species are destructive for several reasons. Since they are not native to a particular ecosystem, there are no biological controls that have evolved over thousands of years to manage them such as natural predators and diseases. Without these controls, the invasives can outcompete the native species for resources and space.
Sweet Sixteen: How do invasive species move?
There are both natural and human-accelerated spread mechanisms.
Animals can spread invasive species as birds disperse seeds and other plants and parasites can attach themselves to migrating wildlife.
Deer play a role in spreading invasive plants because they do not eat them. Rather, they eat the native plants which allows invasive exotics the opportunity to spread.
Natural disasters such as forest fires can also lead to the spread of invasive species.
Humans have greatly increased the ease, speed, and movement of invasion.
Some species have been introduced on purpose, as explorers found an interesting plant or animal and brought it back to their homeland.
Other species have been introduced inadvertently via "hitchhiking" in shipping containers or on vehicles.
Elite Eight: Beating the competition
How do invasive species outcompete native species so well? There are some common traits that make them more prolific (Kolar, 2001):
Rapid reproduction
Fast growth
Tolerance of a variety of environmental conditions
High dispersal ability - wind, animals, birds, etc.
Association with humans - if humans placed them or cultivated them
Final Four: Some NJ invasive species
There are lots of invasive species that can be found in New Jersey, but here are a few examples:
Japanese barberry - this popular landscape shrub is widespread and has invaded many of NJ's forests. It has also been shown to harbor deer ticks, which are carriers of Lyme disease (Williams, et al., 2017).
Spotted lanternfly - this plant hopper insect originally from Asia can feed on more than 70 plant species including cultivated and wild grapes, fruit trees, and hardwood trees common in woodlots and as landscape plantings (NJAES, 2019).
European starling - this prolific bird was introduced in Central Park in the late 1890s and has flourished at the expense of native woodpeckers, great-crested flycatchers, common flickers, bluebirds and other cavity-nesting species (NJDEP, 2003).
Snakehead fish - these adaptable were once imported live as an ornamental species and as food for people. They are voracious eaters and will feed on any fish that will fit in their disproportionately large mouths (NJDEP, 2016).
Championship: What can we do to defeat invasive species?
A few suggestions for reducing invasive plant species from Michele Bakacs' "Plant This, Not That" webinar:
Support the New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team and help control invasive species. (www.fohvos.info/invasive-species-strike-team/)
Understand that invasive plants don’t know boundaries. They may behave on your property while quietly invading a nearby forest.
Identify and remove invasive plants from your property. Don't remove until you have a replacement.
Choose natives plants and talk to your nursery about offering native plant selections.
Support local ordinances and eventually statewide bans.
Resources and further reading can be found after the Upcoming Events.

Foraged Stories–the performing archivist views the papers of Peter Sutherland held at the National Library
Peter Sutherland was integral to the production of Muse, a magazine about Canberra arts, poetry et al, here it is on Trove. Publishing started in 1980, ran to 1984, an issue per month, cost $7.50. What a fascinating publication! I didn’t know about Canberra Movie Makers, dates from ‘69. The early 80s Canberra film festival listings and Electric Shadows listings ... were the old days the good days? They look that way.
So why am I looking at Peter Sutherland. The Haig Park Experiments commissioned Denise Thwaites to mount her community blockchain library project which takes the form of Foraged Stories for this iteration. Denise asked me to be part of it following our extended conversation about blockchain, recordkeeping and archives. Check out this discussion from 2015.
Adelaide (usually of Gorman & Ainslie Arts Centres) of Haig Park Experiments sent me her gleanings about the history of Haig Park. In that is a press cutting for the Haig Park Summer Solstice, organised by residents of Lyneham, Turner and O’Connor with the help of the Canberra Contemporary Arts Front–that sounds like something I want to know more about. Trove linsk CCAF with Peter Sutherland so here I am having a look through the boxes.
I wasn’t patient enough to really understand their delights. To do that you’d have to read the back issues of Muse first and then go through each envelope/folder for the relevant issue. I made some notes as I went which I stuck in the comments in Trove here .
The experience of being an artist in Canberra is quite varied I think and it’s good to remember these are long standing problems ... I am going to put in a request to the NLA to digitise Muse. We’ll see how much they would charge and perhaps the wider community might support getting it done, let’s wait and find out.

OVERKILL Members Discuss Differences Between East Coast And West Coast Thrash Metal Sound (Video)
RARE BLACK METAL COLLECTIBLES
New Jersey thrash metal veterans OVERKILL have released the latest trailer for their upcoming 19th studio album, "The Wings Of War", which will arrive on February 22 via Nuclear Blast. In the third episode of the multi-part documentary series titled "Welcome To The Garden State", the OVERKILL members discuss the differences between the East Coast and West Coast thrash metal sound. "The Wings Of War" was recorded at Gear Recording Studio in New Jersey, SKH Studio in Florida and Jrod Productions with engineering handled by bassist D.D. Verni and guitarist Dave Linsk. The album was produced by the band while Chris "Zeuss" Harris took care of the mixing and mastering. Travis Smith (NEVERMORE, OPETH, SOILWORK, DEATH) was again enlisted to create the artwork for the album. "The Wings Of War" marks OVERKILL's recording debut with drummer Jason Bittner (SHADOWS FALL, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM), who joined the band in 2017. "The Wings Of War" track listing: 01. Last Man Standing 02. Believe In The Fight 03. Head Of A Pin 04. Bat Shit Crazy 05. Distortion 06. A Mother's Prayer 07. Welcome To The Garden State 08. Where Few Dare To Walk 09. Out On The Road-Kill 10. Hole In My Soul Ellsworth said: "It was a blast making 'The Wings Of War'! It is something old feeling new again, as our chemistry was altered by the addition of Jason Bittner. I was curious from the get-go, how would it pan out? I think what we accomplished here is a new, upgraded OVERKILL that embraced the new chemistry, while taking our roots into the present. The new formula produced not only more raw power, but more places to go with melody, a win, win. The key is being not only interested in the change, but part of it. I'll tell you what, it's still fun as hell making OVERKILL records." Last year, Ellsworth told Brian Aberback of Patch.com about the musical direction of OVERKILL's new material: "What I notice about it is that there are parts of it that delve into really classic heavy metal that are spawned off the riff. There's kind of a brutal metal riff and then there's a heavy metal riff. The brutal riff being more in the modern sense of OVERKILL but the classic riff goes back into the feel of 'Feel The Fire', 'Taking Over', 'The Years Of Decay' kind of influence. "I think what we're doing is staying with that classic riff but adding the brutality after," he continued. "So it has the vibe of classic heavy metal with that spawned aggression off of it. Obviously, we're not going to be progressive or off the tracks with where we're going. It's OVERKILL. But the internal end of that is really exciting because we notice every little different nuance in it." Asked what Jason has brought to the band, Ellsworth said: "He's put a lot of work into the album and his excitement has spread to all of us. He's the first person in this band who's deeply, technically trained. That's one of the most exciting things about this project. This guy is pretty close to a virtuoso when hitting the skins." OVERKILL is: Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth - Vocals D.D. Verni - Bass Dave Linsk - Lead Guitar Derek Tailer - Rhythm Guitar Jason Bittner - Drums

Here’s Why You Should Attend Modernist Interior Design History | modernist interior design history
During Palm Springs Modernism Anniversary 2017 aftermost week, I abounding a absurd presentation by Adele Cygelman (author of, amid others, the book Palm Springs Modern) blue-blooded “Elrod = Diamonds are Forever,” in which she gave a abrupt overview of the activity and career of acclaimed “mid-century modern” autogenous artist Arthur Elrod as able-bodied as the history of his close Elrod & Associates. Elrod, forth with his ally including Hal Broderick and William Reiser, was amenable for the autogenous designs of abounding of the best acclaimed Palm Springs midcentury avant-garde homes.
Modern Entryway Japanese Style Interior Design History Ways To Add … – modernist interior design history | modernist interior design history
Traditionally, Modernism Anniversary has been focused on architectonics and the mid-20th-century architects who were amenable for the arid avant-garde homes and barrio that are so well-loved (one ability alike say fetishized) in Palm Springs. In her presentation, Cygelman attempted to accord some of the period’s autogenous designers their about-face in the spotlight by presenting archival photos, anecdotes and ephemera (such as advertisements, columnist clippings and alike a abusive cartoon) accompanying to the assignment of Arthur Elrod & Associates.
The aboriginal autogenous of our own Palm Springs home/vacation rental (which we alarm “Elrod Villa”) was the assignment of Elrod & Associates (attributed primarily to Hal Broderick in a 1975 Architectural Digest adventure on the home). Abounding of the aboriginal appearance of that architecture still survive — including congenital cabinets, some of the different bank finishes, flooring, doors and alike electrical and audio systems — and I was agog to apprentice added about these designers.
Cygelman’s presentation was abreast by a abundant accord of archival analysis and provided abundant advice that was new to me, acicular out abounding of the alternating capacity in Elrod’s work, and put it all into a broader context. Highly recommended should you anytime accept the adventitious to see her accord this presentation afresh or if it should become the accountable of a approaching book!
Panorama. A History of Modern Design in Belgium at ADAM, Brussels … – modernist interior design history | modernist interior design history
In this abrupt extract from her added than hour-long presentation (captured on my iPhone — apologies for casual all-a-quiver cam), she gives an overview of an aboriginal Palm Springs activity by Elrod and Broderick — the home of Lucy and Desi Arnaz. As she notes, the autogenous of that home is aloof one archetype of the change of “modern” autogenous design — showing elements of a bright abandonment from the “French Provincial” designs that prevailed at the time:
There was a abundant accord of fun and absorbing advice presented about the ability of Palm Springs active at the time and how that begin announcement in Elrod’s designs. Here for example, Cygelman describes the autogenous of a home in the Thunderbird Heights development in Palm Springs, forth with a little “cultural anthropology” about dining apartment of the period:
I’d been analytical about the amphibian “rounded rectangle” congenital cabinets in our home and was absorbed to see that affair again in this overview of a Hal Broderick autogenous for a home by artist William Cody:
Contemporary vs. Modern Style: What’s the Difference? – modernist interior design history | modernist interior design history
The amphibian banquette on the larboard ancillary of the aboriginal angel is absolutely agnate to the ones begin in our home — such as the one in our dining allowance is apparent in the lower appropriate of this photo:
In accomplishing the “cultural anthropology” for this presentation, Cygelman baldheaded abounding alluring anecdotes — including some not-widely-known advice about Slim Aarons’s iconic Palm Springs photo, “Poolside Gossip.”
Turns out, there are previously-unseen outtakes from the Poolside Gossip photoshoot, several of which accommodate Arthur Elrod himself. Cygelman presented these shots and the adventure abaft them. (I happened to be sitting anon abutting to Nelda Linsk, the “woman in yellow” in the acclaimed photo, and that’s her articulation in the audience, responding to Cygelman’s question):
15 New York City Townhouses That Blend History and Modern Style … – modernist interior design history | modernist interior design history
Of course, Cygelman’s presentation additionally discussed the autogenous of Elrod House, Elrod’s iconic Palm Springs home advised for him by artist John Lautner.
After account Arthur Elrod and William Reiser’s abortive deaths in a car blast in Palm Springs — which drew abounding gasps from the audience — Cygelman bankrupt with a acceptable bit of absurdity by arena the archetypal “Bambi and Thumper” arena from “Diamonds are Forever,” wherein Elrod’s active allowance serves as the set for James Bond’s abruptness appointment with a brace of attractive assailants:
I met Adele Cygelman briefly afterwards her admirable presentation and she after attentive came to bout Elrod Villa, babble about the assignment of Elrod, Broderick and Reiser and to apprehend some of what he had abstruse about their captivation in our own home (originally advised for Sigmund E. Edelstone).
APARTMENT INTERVENTION: Mid-Century Modern – modernist interior design history | modernist interior design history
Among the best agitative things that I abstruse from her: I hadn’t accomplished that the new Palm Springs Art Museum Architectonics and Architecture Center absolutely houses an annal of the assignment of Arthur Elrod/Harold Broderick and I can’t delay to analyze that anon in the hopes of acquirements added about the history and different architecture of Elrod Villa.
At some point in the future, the “Elrod = Diamonds are Forever” presentation may advance into a book about Arthur Elrod. I aboveboard achievement that this activity comes to accomplishment as it would absolutely be a “must read” for midcentury avant-garde enthusiasts!
