Kanye West’s latest controversial remarks could land him in a legal battle.

The artist and entrepreneur, who has changed his name to Ye, spoke on a recent episode of the podcast “Drink Champs,” where he discussed the death of George Floyd and several other topics.

“I watched the George Floyd documentary that Candace Owens put out. One of the things that his two roommates said was they want a tall guy like me, and the day that he died, he said a prayer for eight minutes,” West said. “They hit him with the fentanyl. If you look, the guy’s knee wasn’t even on his neck like that.”

Former Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck, according to Chauvin trial testimony by the medical examiner who performed Floyd’s autopsy and stood by his initial finding that his death was the result of “cardiopulmonary arrest” that occurred during “law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression.”

Hennepin County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Andrew Baker said during his testimony that Floyd’s heart disease and use of fentanyl were contributing factors to his death, but not the direct cause. 

Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt, who has represented the Floyd family, tweeted Sunday that they are considering legal action against West.

“While one cannot defame the dead, the family of #GeorgeFloyd is considering suit for Kanye’s false statements about the manner of his death,” Merritt tweeted.“Claiming Floyd died from fentanyl not the brutality established criminally and civilly undermines & diminishes the Floyd family’s fight.”

Merritt told CNN he was alerted to West’s comments by Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd, who told him he wanted to pursue a defamation suit against the celebrity. 

While that’s not legally possible because George Floyd is deceased, Merritt said, there are other legal avenues to pursue, including the Floyd family possibly suing for intentional infliction of emotional distress.

“I have put together a working team to investigate [West’s] statements and to investigate the source of those statements,” Merritt said. 

CNN has reached out to a representative of West for additional comment.

West’s remarks about Floyd come amid backlash for recent social media posts by West that were criticized as anti-Semetic and his decision to dress himself and several models “White Lives Matter” shirts at a recent fashion show. 

Video of Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes sparked protests and calls for justice around the world. 

Chauvin was convicted in April 2021 on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to 22 and half years in prison.

This doesn’t shock me. Once you settle into a routine at home it’s really difficult to muster the desire to go back to the office. Some folks need to be in an office with other folks but other, like me, don’t need it.

128. Michael Jackson, la comunidad afro y el uso del discurso racial para defenderse [Parte 2]

En esta segunda parte del post #127, voy a dejar traducidos una serie de artículos de periodistas y escritores afro, que precisamente intentan explicar por qué esa necesidad de las comunidades negras de proteger a sus artistas (aunque debo aclarar que a Jackson lo defienden personas de todas las razas también) y como el tema de la raza se convirtió para Jackson en la excusa perfecta para desviar las acusaciones.

Por qué algunos sienten la necesidad de proteger a celebridades negras como Michael Jackson

(CNN) - Hubo un momento en que la presencia de una persona negra en la televisión era motivo de celebración.

En los primeros días de la televisión, las familias negras se apiñaban alrededor del plató para echar un vistazo a la representación.

Ahora, esa reverencia por algunos ha tomado la forma de ser extremadamente protectores con las estrellas negras, especialmente cuando se les acusa de irregularidades.

Desde Michael Jackson hasta Bill Cosby y R. Kelly, la respuesta de los partidarios de los hombres acusados de conducta sexual inapropiada ha sido casi tan explosiva como las acusaciones que todos negaron.

Kelly y se convirtió en un peculiar Mes de la Historia Negra lleno de fracasos anti-negros. A falta de una semana completa en marzo, estamos aquí debatiendo en masa la validez de Leaving Neverland de HBO. "Lo entenderemos", dijo en broma, pero no precisamente bromeando sobre el intenso golpe que esperaba de parte de la familia de Michael y muchos fanáticos. Según los informes, los Jackson están demandando a HBO por $ 100 millones y emitieron una larga declaración defendiendo lo que creen que es la inocencia de su hermano.

A veces, cuando se trata de eso, tenemos que usar el sentido común. Cada fan en el espejo tiene que preguntarse: "¿En qué creo?" No meramente, ¿qué quiero creer? Sí, esto es un desmantelamiento, un ajuste de cuentas. Pero usted sabe muy bien que hay momentos en que todos los argumentos en contra de algo simplemente no cuadran en su esencia. To celebrate, I want to share this amazing article that I stumbled upon today. It’s called The Curious Case of BTS: How Journalism Mistakes Production For Manufacture by Sarah C. It’s a fantastic read, and I highly, highly recommend it!

I truly admire creation done with real intention. The last time I felt this strongly about intention was Beyonce’s Homecoming, both the performance at Coachella and the doc that she released on Netflix, as well as her most recent drop, Black is King. Lisa Respers France’s article on CNN covered this really well!

There’s certainly joy and meaning in surprises that happen throughout the creative process (for a recent BTS example, see the In the Soop theme song creation, lol). But there’s also something special about driving that forward and executing on a plan that you’ve formulated over time (for a recent BTS example, also see the recording session for the In the Soop theme, lol). 

Almost nothing in Beyonce’s work is accidental. Every artistic direction had reasons behind it. Every detail. Every costume. Every song choice. Every dancer. Every instrumentalist. Every note. That helped to promote a fuller story and boost what could have been just a phenomenal stage or album to be real iconic moments in pop culture that raised general awareness about several things, most notably, the variety, emotion, art, depth, and strength within Black culture.

That level of mindfulness, without expectation or pressure, but instead a focus on speaking truth, is something I strive for in my personal life, and something that cognitive psychology generally adopts.

Yoongi similarly speaks the truth here:

I think rather than approach K-pop as a genre, a better approach would be "integrated content". K-pop includes not just the music but the clothes, the make-up, the choreography. All of these elements I think sort of amalgamate together in a visual and auditory content package. That I think sets it apart from other music or maybe other genres.

That “truth” is fueled by the intention to show our full selves. Aesthetic is part of the art, not in a shallow way, but because it helps get the message across. The general purpose of psychotherapy is to help develop a more integrated self, with its subfields all striving toward that goal through different frameworks. For example, CBT focuses on balancing distorted thinking. Psychodynamic therapy often focuses on identifying and working on trauma. Humanistic therapy teaches us to be more present and in the moment. Positive psychology focuses on using strengths to propel us toward self-actualization. I see it as the Power Rangers all assembling to form Megazord. We bring the disparate pieces of ourselves together to create a more holistic life.

We know that idols are seen in this way in Korea. Firstly, they’re called idols. There are expectations for them to serve as examples of a self-actualized life. BTS has even done this in a way that has forced Korea to challenge its own beliefs and culture, from the idol/trainee experience all the way up to military duty. It makes sense that BTS would leverage strong production to achieve that goal, just like it takes hard work (and sometimes, teams of people) to collect the separate pieces of our experiences to be able to more effectively communicate and understand who we are.

I feel like BTS is leveling up over time in this way. They’re evaluating their skills, ideas, and learnings and seeing how they match up against what we’re collectively experiencing. Their albums have become increasingly introspective and exploratory while also centering more and more around the things that are vital to the human experience: existential crises, the need to belong, the need to be loved. They’re introducing people who have not engaged in these processes for themselves how to engage in that introspection. At the very least, they’re providing exemplars of those messages in a way that ultimately provides comfort.

And when people ask me why I’m a fan of BTS, I tell them that this is what I love most about their work.

I’m sorry, KFC and Lifetime are doing WHAT now?

Apparently, KFC is determined to make people think the Colonel is hot and sexy, despite literally not one person on this earth ever asking for that.

We are trying really hard not to make a "finger licking good" joke.

KFC and Lifetime announced Monday a partnership for a holiday mini-movie."A Recipe for Seduction" will be a 15-minute short film starring Mario Lopez as Colonel Harland Sanders, the founder of the restaurant chain whose name and likeness are still used as symbols of the chain.The mini-movie "is full of mystery, suspense, deception, 'fowl' play and at the heart of it all ... love and fried chicken," according to a press release.

The release describes the film as a "steamy holiday love affair" involving a young heiress whose mother has handpicked a suitor for her. "But when a handsome, young chef with a secret fried chicken recipe and a dream arrives, he sets in motion a series of events that unravel the mother's devious plans," the release says...

And yes, there is a trailer, because of course there is.

I’m pretty sure that there’s some really ... INteresting person on the KFC marketing team whose actual job description reads, “Think of ways we can use Colonel Sanders in eyebrow-raising ways that will completely freak out the public.”

For example, there was this -- which. leave us know, was a real thing, although apparently only three or so of them were made, as a contest prize:

I ... don’t understand why ANYONE would want that. (Although I do appreciate the “keep away from open flame” note in the bottom right, with people sitting next to a fireplace -- admittedly not quite an open flame, but still.)

The Lifetime movie is, of course, not KFC’s first attempt to make everyone think of the Colonel as hot, sexy and dateworthy (as opposed to murdered, skinned, and flocked Colonel Sanders, and once more with feeling: WHY?) 

For example, there was the KFC Dating Simulator, as mentioned in these parts in, “… No. No no no and also? no!”

And above all, there was ... The Romance. 

And if you have forgotten, I will remind you, because if I have to occasionally remember that KFC made people think about The Colonel Doing IT (yes, THAT it), then so do you: “Tender Wings of Desire: Dear Reader, I have read this novella so that you will not have to.”

Sadly, “Tender Wings of Desire” no longer appears to be available, so you’ll just have to be satisfied with Mario Lopez.

(...The question is, will the Colonel be taking off his shirt in the movie?)

Hamilton: An American Musical

Hello historian folks! This week you get a double whammy of content. Not only do I get to chat with y'all on here, but I have also released my first podcast! Digital Dust can be found on SoundCloud, and my episode focuses on Hamilton: An American Musical and the ways that the public reception of the musical has shifted from its Broadway premiere in 2015 to its Disney+ release in 2020.

I have long been fascinated by how the ways that we share historic narratives change and are influenced by the political climate surrounding the narrative. This particular example has gripped me for years because of the speed with which the opinions and narrative have changed, and how those ideas are leaking further into the mainstream. By mainstream here, I don't just mean on Twitter or Facebook outside of theatre groups - I mean how the messages and even direct quotes from the show have become part of a larger social and political discussion with the Black Lives Matter protests.

Now, this may be a shocker: but I am a white Canadian. Because of that, my authority is a little limited to speak on the topic of race, American history, and its presentation in theatre. If there is one thing that I have learned from the Black Lives Matter movement online, is to know when it is proper for an ally to step back and raise up the voices of BIPOC activists, rather than speak over them. With that, here are some articles that I have consulted that are written by BIPOC folks:

Coates discusses the pop culture aspect of the final term of the Obama presidency, and how that contrasts with the (then) impending Trump presidency.

Lisa Respers France, Lin-Manuel Miranda Responds to Hamilton Slavery Criticism

Twitter, ever the popular avenue for debates, allows for Lin-Manuel Miranda to directly interact with criticism and praise of the show, and he seems to welcome negative criticism of the show as a way to engage in further conversations about race-based history and how the show could/should have explored that.

Annette Gordon-Reed, The intense debates surrounding Hamilton don't diminish the musical - they enrich it

This article further expands on something that the previous article touches on and which was one of the most lauded aspects of a history musical: how it opens up new avenues for conversations about how history is presented and who is doing the presenting.

Ishmael Reed, "Hamilton: The Musical:" Black Actors Dress up like Slave Traders… and It's not Halloween

This is one of the arguments that I did not see until after the Disney+ release, but this article was published soon after the Broadway premiere. It seemed very timely to the discussions around what it means when we tear down statues of Confederate soldiers but also lauding a musical that romanticized the same slave owners that led to the Confederacy. 

I strongly encourage you to have a look at these. I tried to include not just articles that speak favorably of the musical, but also ones that viewed Miranda’s efforts to include BIPOC actors in a negative light. Also, please have a listen to Digital Dust! I am a bit biased to my own episode, but there are also others going up by my very talented colleagues in the MA program. As always, there is so much more to this than I have the space or the expertise to cover, so please check out the Black Lives Matter Canada Carrd for resources on further educating yourself, and how you can help these contemporary communities.

Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, which did not appear to go over well with her husband Will Smith. While presenting the award for best documentary, Rock joked, "Jada I love you, 'G.I. Jane 2,' can't wait to see it." The camera cut to Pinkett Smith, who rolled her eyes as she sat next to Smith.
