Their relative sizes definitely correlate with how often I see them each eating. They're about halfway to average adult size now

#draco speaks #the snabies #on one hand they're really big (especially Rosie) on the other i know very well this is nowhere near giant african land snail size yet #though the last ones I saw in person were a different even larger cousin species than mine so I have a slightly warped expectation #but I did used to keep this same kind as a child #the Really Fucking Huge snails you see are either Achatina achatina or exceptionally large individuals of Lissachatina fulica #the average lissachatina fulica is apparently 12cm shell which sounds about right

For the giant African snail, size really does matter! When two snails decide to mate, the larger (typically older) snail takes on the role of female and accepts sperm from the smaller snail. If both snails are the same size, they will both exchange sperm. Each one may immediately go on to fertilize their eggs, or store the sperm for up to two years!

Giant Snails Take Over Florida’s Gulf Coast Again

The state has found more than 1,400 of the massive snails since June

The invasive giant African land snail—one of the most damaging snails in the world—has returned to Florida for the third time in the state’s history, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. 

Since their latest discovery in June, and as of late last week. officials had captured 1,434 dead and alive snails on 30 properties in Pasco County, about 40 minutes northwest of Tampa, reports CBS42's Sam Sachs.

The giant African land snail (Achatina (Lissachatina fulica) has a voracious appetite, eating over 500 types of plants and sometimes even consuming plaster and stucco, putting structures at risk. The snails can produce 1,200 eggs in a year and grow up to about the size of a human fist...

He fell from the branch last night and decided to not care and use the opportunity to snack on some cucumber from his spa day

Also, Diablo's spa day. He had some dirt trapped in the growth edge of his shell, and I want him to have a beautiful healthy shell so a toothbrush meant for babies is soft enough to not accidentally damage the growth edge

Here you can see what happens when the growth edge is messed with. (There was some dirt trapped underneath it)

I know this is a bit out of your wheelhouse, but what are your thoughts on African Giant Land Snails?

Honestly, I just kinda love how Huge they can get.

wild Lissachatina fulica are actually pretty underwhelming, although they’re still the biggest land snails I’ve ever seen. Archachatina or very old captive fulica are massive by comparison, I’d love to meet one of those.
