how to adapt into dtblr culture for twitter refugees

so you've decided to move here from twitter. welcome and congratulations. this post is basically a big warning that goes THIS ISN'T TWITTER, DON'T BEHAVE LIKE IT IS, LEAVE THAT AT THE DOOR

i'll be teaching you two things, how the site works, and how to adapt your behavior to tumblr ( and really, normal human being ) culture. believe me, it's not that hard and it will actually feel very productive

let's start with the basics and frequent questions

your username can be anything, don't stress about it

your picture can be anything. a lot of us don't even have dteam related stuff up on our profile

your display name doesn't have to be your name. nobody is going to see it when you post, only usernames are visible

check your settings. do it. get familiar with them. turning on and off asks, turning anon off, turning submissions off. click on your blog, go to blog settings, check things there, go to account, your muted things will be there, go to dashboard and customize that. use your settings !!!

yes, pinned posts are fairly important and they tend to be pretty extensive. name age what you post about ( a lot of people here are multifandom !), just don't overshare ( no locations no trigger lists i beg you ). they also usually have a breakdown of your tags at the end

tags

it's a whole thing. some are actually useful. some are just passive commentary

the tags you put on posts ( both when you made the post and when you're reblogging something ) are both global and hosted on your profile. it's why you'll see things like "nameofperson art" rather than just "art". using just "art" will put you in the promoted tag, in this case

you can use spaces on your tags

usually you will tag what type of post you're making ( art, text post, ask post ), and then the contents keep in mind this is how people often mute things, some people tag the current situation, people use and mute ship tags. but this is also how people find things, like the specific asks from one person to another, so "username ask" is commonly used, "irl person ( dream, dnf, etc )" is also seen a lot just watch how others tag things and copy them. nobody will get offended you took their tag formatting, most of us will appreciate properly tagged posts

you do tag when you reblog people. you use tags to comment on things. don't really use replies unless you're, saying thank you to someone or pointing out a spell mistake or asking to add an option to a poll, etc. we don't do replies, just rb your reply

quick reblog and like deets

post popularity is measured in "notes" which is the sum of replies, reblogs and likes. we don't really care much about numbers here and if you start getting crazy about it people will not like it. this is more of a talking and showing site

you can reblog without tags, feel free to

you can hide your likes. you can and should like as many things as you want. they don't alter any algorithm, since there's none. a like is a "i saw this post" notification to the poster

actually posting

people talk a lot. a fucking lot, and it's something you will have to get used to, because it's very different from twitter

there are no qrts. callouts are looked down upon. breathe. if you don't like something MUTE IT DON'T POST ABOUT IT, because no one is going to listen to any callouts. you will have to learn to live with the fact people like things you don't. this will, with time, make you feel very free

the bulk of posting here is asks, as you might notice soon. asks are fun and encouraged. just don't name drop if you're talking about drama please ?

don't be scared to send asks off anon, this is how people will find you and get to know you really. people are also more likely to reply to you

block bait anons. yes you can block anons. yes it will block every blog they make

culture time

i've said this. tumblr is unserious. drama here is approached very differently and with several less layers of panic. you will see death threats. you will see slurs ( said in non derogatory ways ). you will see jokes about serious topics. you will see people say "i didn't like this" and nobody will care

tumblr is a community of individualism. you will like your own things within the thing we share we like. you might not like dream's music, you might not find irl streams entertaining, as long as you're fucking normal about it ? nobody will care and you're free to express your opinions. people will even come ask you about it and just have a chat. we're here for the same content to some degree

tumblr is also a bunch of people who understand they like another bunch of people. that none of the streamers have stopped being human. so you might see people defend things that, maybe, you'd not have thought to defend before. maybe you're even uncomfortable seeing them defending it. this is something you will experience a lot, and you'll learn to properly deal with it as time passes

because again. no one does callouts here unless it is extremely bad. no one cares if you don't really like them. and they also accept people might and will not like them. and that is fine. and that doesn't make either person horrible. you're just different people. and you don't even have to interact

you want to make friends ? ask people things, compliment people's work, genuinely attempt to make conversation. this is not an impersonal website the way twitter is. people don't care about your opinions because they care about you, and you are more than what you don't like

the more positive and jokey and interactive you are the more people will talk to you. there's no "hitting the algorithm", there's no "engagement", it's just people talking to people. so don't be a neg posting bot, and be a person

you will learn to be less miserable. you learn to stop giving a shit and just do what makes you happy. they cannot get you here. there's no qrts. the few antis you'll find can be blocked and you'll never have to directly interact with one. don't be mean to the people in your own community, even if you disagree

again, you are more than what you don't like. learn to be what you like instead. and leave the dooming at the door

i did my post about merch and this is a general price guide to go along with that, but because it's so subject to change, i have reblogs turned off and will probably delete this after a bit when it's no longer relevant/correct. these prices are not based on original price but rather what you can expect to pay for it now if you actually want to get your hands on it.

this is a lot more informal and just based off what I've seen over the last 2-3 months of digging. lower-end average (not the best, but generally good enough) prices are listed in USD (since all of this was originally sold in the US, its pretty hard to get a hold of elsewhere).

note: the biggest tip i can give you is to look on Mercari. there's a lot fewer professional collectors/speculators ("investors" 🙄) over there, but also fewer listings in general. that said, definitely check other places before buying something, and Mercari doesn't have search alert emails like eBay. also, take a peek at Facebook Marketplace! I have seen one or two things there if you look "outside your area" with shipping.

original posters: (in mint condition) close to 10$ but sometimes pushing 20$. reproductions fall in this range too tbh.

pins vary based on what the pin is and if it still has its backing. most pins are still available direct too so i haven't paid much attention to their prices. I think like 10$ (give or take a few dollars) for the buttons (4-pack) is around what I've found. side note: double check any pins being sold against han cholo's catalogue and my con promos post, because if it's not in there it's a fan's design, which 1) you really should buy direct from them, 2) might be CHEAPER from them. i saw someone selling pins for 30$ when brand new from the fan artist they're 24$. same thing for the jewelry. there's a reseller who is my nemesis for marking up items and trying to make them seem rarer by calling them con exclusive when theyre for sale online right now. i cannot stress enough how much you should cross-check this stuff.

her universe clothes: this varies based on what it is, but in general you should be looking to get it for less than original list price. even if it's barely used, it is still used, and you will find it lower than original eventually, so use that as your general guide. for the jackets, you can get as good as 40$ off sometimes (I’ve seen the adora bomber that retailed at 70$ listed between 25-75$). the bomber is definitely the most common item i've seen, usually around 25$, but i haven't checked the situation over on poshmark/thredup so there might be more variety there. (also, i have the links to all the original clothing listings in my merch post, which includes the original sizing chart!)

action figures: they list for 800+, but listed doesn't equal sold at all. i havent seen any movement on the listings i've found (which span up into four figures, btw). i think i saw them sold for 450$ once. sometimes people list just the BOX for 150$ so good fucking luck if you want this one and make sure to read the listing carefully. also, if you want to look around for these, add "-keshi" (on sites that support it) to remove the super7 keshis from the search, which are these weird 7$ rubber things for the OG show that remind me of the straw buddies.

can you tell the difference between the items that collectors have targeted and the regular merch? lmao. speaking of collecting: NIB = new in box. basically, it's in the same condition as if you bought it directly from the store. sometimes you might see NIP for "new in package" (think the buttons, which obviously don't have a box).

dolls: okay, listen. i've seen adora sell for 90$ and i've also seen her sit around and wait to be sold for 40$. every single one of these can go for three figures at times, but i would say an average list price (they're super over-priced, so you can make lower offers after a while of no movement, i've seen 100$ come off listings as time went on) is around 70-100$ (NIB) and a good one is closer to 40-50$. she-ra (regular) tends to be cheapest and easiest to get below this price point. the lowest ive seen NIB for them individually is 30$ each for glimbow, 39$ for adora, 25$ for she-ra, 45$ for she-ra+swift wind, and 57$ for catra (note: catra is the most expensive and rare to find below three figures. she sometimes goes for over 200$). i've also seen the entire BFS go as a 50$ lot NIB and the BFS + catra go as a lot for 30$ out of box so factor that how you will. these prices range a Lot. if you wait and are patient, you can get a more reasonable price eventually. (there's currently a lot of she-ra/glimmer/bow listed as 300$ despite she-ra being way more common and regularly going for $50. people are stupid) OH RIGHT i forgot the sdcc exclusive. yeah 100$ list is average on that. best price ive seen (initially listed) recently is 80$ NIB. that said, i've seen them sell as low as 31$ when the packaging was damaged. because prices are so variable, i've seen damaged out-of-boxes go for more than NIBs (see: 115$ damaged catra vs 57$ NIB) because the seller/buyer were pricing based off of a higher listing. if someone is trying to sell something damaged or with a slightly off screening (imperfect paint/print job), you can lean on that to get the price lower (there's a glimmer with a Hilariously skewed screening - and missing accessories + messy hair - listed for 1$ on ebay right now).

the Lootcrate and Sonic stuff varies based on what it is (and if it's in a lot) but they tend to span 5-20$. usually they aren't sold individually so it's hard to price.

the stickers/tattoo/coloring sheets usually go in lots but range 2-15$

the target toy sword/shield and target costume should be something like 30-45$ for a good NIB price (i've seen them go up to 75$ as a list price tho). i've seen the costume go for as low as 10$ if it's used.

i havent seen enough listings (or any in some cases) to get a vibe on the prices for anything else.

these prices are just based on what's going down right now. they'll go up around the holidays and then lower again, and it's possible in a year they're all way higher or way lower than currently. collectors have targeted some of these things and its so obvious when the con exclusive pin sets can sell for 12$ and the (originally 15$!) dolls from target can go for 160$. it's super annoying and i hope all of them choke <3 but maybe their stupid speculating will taper off and it will get easier to get stuff reasonably. we can only hope

I know I enjoy shipping a lot, but I really hate when I want to go for a friendship and just get shut down? Like....for example, if a muse of mine that's underage (and its a mun that doesn't ship underage muses) wants to interact with your muse and just be friends, I shouldn't have to get an immediate roadblock because they're not shippable with your muse. First of all, that blocks character development for your own muse. So like you're doing yourself a disservice. A major one. Secondly, that kinda restricts the types of characters that can be used at all. I just don't like it.

I really really hate when people get all up in arms about their character portrayal being as canon as possible. Like guys, I've seen this mentally ruin people. It's NOT worth it. Your muses are not meant to be canon. That's right. NONE of your muses are canon. They by existing on this site, written by a person that is not the author, are inherently going to have experiences on their belt that the canon muse would never have. Every single experience changes a person. If you're trying to write hardcore canon, you literally can't. It's not possible. So stop putting yourselves down, and for the love of god stop PUTTING OTHERS DOWN if you don't like their portrayal.

I hate how toxic the environment is when it comes to writing a race/ethnicity that is not your own. I was scared to make the Martinez family, no matter how much fucking research I did, cause I didn't want to be harassed by members of the Latino community telling me my portrayal was wrong or offensive. Like that's not helping get you representation. What is does is make sure every muse you see is a white character with no differences whatsoever. So good job fucking your own chances there people.

Making Surgeons Please ( jam postmortem)

Surgeons Please is my entry for the Utah Indie Jam, 2022. I enter every year if I'm able. It was made live on twitch in 29 hours (counting sleep/etc). The theme of the jam was "Re-connect".

What game am I making, anyway?

I spent almost the entire first night thinking about how I could make a game based on "re-connect". I had a few ideas, like making a game about repairing a ship, and reconnecting with earth, but by the end of the night I'd decided on a game. The idea was such. You're an alien surgeon re-connecting limbs to races you've never seen nor understand.

Influences

Upcycling

Last year had some really strong competition, and there were several games that stood out to me as something I'd want to replicate. Chief among them was the understated "Upcycling: Giving Trash New Life", by Palladian1881, which, if I'm remembering correctly was a small team. I remember watching the presentation of this game and feeling really warmed by the concept. It's a crafting / sales game about crafting useful items from discarded trash. There's a great video on the gameplay on the page if you're interested.

Papers Please

Papers Please by Lucas Pope is a dreary simulation game where you work as an immigration checkpoint in a corrupt soviet-bloc era fictional country of Artotzska. I think about it a lot, as its a very charged, emotional game, yet is also entirely systems driven to demonstrate its message.

What we take and what we leave

With these influences, there were a few things I saw as necessities for the project.

•Have a low-fi, ideally dual-tone art style

•Have 'customers' that walk to the counter

•Have a counter, where you can organize papers and have various accurate depicted real world objects to interact with. I wanted a clock, a radio, and as many other gadgets to interact with as possible.

Hitting the ground with a Plan

The next morning, I had a little more than 24 hours left, and I intended to still enjoy my normal life, making dinner, going out etc, which meant I had to be BRUTAL with the scope and cuts of the game. There are a few decisions borne out of this that made the game fairly unique.

• The game would have a fixed resolution of 256x144. I came to this resolution by comparing with Paper's Please.

• I would do all art at this resolution. This had several benefits, but the biggest was the time save in placement and handling of the sprites. I would only have to drag the sprite into the game and it would be at the perfect scale and position. Every time.

• All music is from Audiio, a licensed music site which I purchased a lifetime license for years ago. I would listen to music purely from audiio while working to help nail down the tracks and style used.

Creating the artstyle

Using photo reference, I sketched out a pharmacy background and a counter top. The photo reference had consistent lighting that I was able to use to inform my art. Deciding where the light is is one of the first steps you should have when created art. For all my of pixel art, unless otherwise necessary, I use the same palette I've been using for several years.

Originating in a pixel art forum, Pixelation, I have made slight customizations over the near decade I've had it. Choosing a palette is important for time efficiency in my art. If you've locked in your colors, you can't overthink which color to use as much, which can make creating new things very time consuming. Before I adopted this palette, it would have taken me days, if not weeks to do the amount of art I did for Surgeon's Please, and I likely would have had to do significant revisions as well to maintain a cohesive style. By locking in my colors, I was able to do all of the art for the game; before even opening up a code editor for the game; in 1 hour. The time save I get from these techniques (locked in palette, photo references), is insane.

Overthinking the interface

While I had the gameplay art locked down for the game, I always struggle with UI. Your user interface is a great opportunity to inform your world and really get your player invested, which means I always struggle with it, because the style for every game is a little bit different, and requires a different approach for the UI. I ended up deciding on an office theme, and attempted (probably unsuccessfully) to style various buttons as manilla folders, or clipboards. I'm still very happy with how this turned out, though I made the decision to off-color some things to make the world feel more sickly and sterile. That, I kind of regret. I think I could have made better art without this decision, and I ended up having to recolor a few things in the editor anyway.

Controversial architecture

Time to talk about the programming. Like any game jam game, the code is FULL of bad practices that you should never do normally, but there were a lot of time saves here too. First, the most controversial (for some reason) choice.

I used a very old version of Unity Intentionally.

For quick projects like this, I tend to use Unity5.0, for one reason, and one reason only (though it's good practice to lock your engine version unless you need new features). I needed Unity-script.

Unityscript is Unity's fake language, it's intended to be used like HTML5's javascript, but it breaks tons of stuff, despite basically being C# with a funny hat on.

But using unityscript as a solo developer is very important! You lose the ability to do webGL builds, the performance is worse, and there is basically no compatibility with C#, nor is the documentation any good, occasionally non-existent, especially for Unity5's UI. The result of course, is that I hate working on UI, but the time save is HUGE, comparatively.

For that tradeoff, every single script you write is going to be much shorter. As much as half the size in some situations. Because Unityscript handles your includes, references, and in general technical, time consuming programming tasks, automatically.

What that means for me is I can save myself thousands of words in my script, meaning the script gets done faster, and conversions that C# can't do, unityscript can without any hassle, meaning I also don't have to declare new variables to create new references, and can assign by references, and Unity will fix all of it.

There's also some other benefits, namely that Unity is getting slower and slower in the newer versions, and the newest of them forces recompiles practically constantly. Using an older version like Unity 5, means that I never have to deal with this:

There are ways around that of course, but the less things I have to fix to finish, the less time I spend making the game, which in a short deadline of 29 hours, is VERY important.

After that, there's some other considerations that are actually good practice, and saved me a lot of time. I try to do this in every project.

I never, NEVER write the same code/logic twice.

No duh, right? Kinda. But specifically, in Unity, this is extra important. Unity uses an ECS(Entity-Component System), which requires some extra considerations. Instead of writing a script of how X works, you have to write that script AND put it on an object (an Entity!) that will then call and activate that script.

What this means, practically speaking, is that I can create simple, 5-10 line scripts that only do one thing, when asked, and I can duplicate that script across every object in the game world, rather than having each object script need to recreate that function.

Don't get me wrong, this is NOT better performance wise than how 'best practices' would be for a professional project, but you know what?

It's faster. It's a LOT faster to make.

Because of these tactical choices, the game was mechanically 'finished' in 14 hours. Just over 8 of those hours was actively working on the game. With that, the second 'work' day had finished, and I went to bed. If this is what I had to submit, I'd be happy with it.

The Next Morning (9 hours later)

With the bright, bleary eyed morning, came problems. I was proud of what I've done, but all I had so far was a simulation of the pharmacy. I had completely neglected polishing steps, so there was no menu or plotline visible in the game. With about 5 hours to submission time, I decided I could do something about it.

I would normally create a full menu, with a settings menu, but decided that wasn't necessary due to how I built the simulation. Music was controlled directly by the radio on the desk. I added an opening cutscene with some plot, and buckled down to spend the rest of the time on polish.

Typical polish I worked on

One of the biggest things I've adjusted to since selling games for money is the difference in quality and polish between a free game and a paid game. Since learning these differences, I've tried to put a lot of work into making every game I release match up to commercial standards. To this end, there were a lot of nice-to-haves to work on.

• Sound effects for surgeries / medications

• Animations / effects for surgeries

• Full game testing and bug fixing

• Beginning and end of game / failure state

I managed to get a lot of sound effects in, but it became pretty time consuming and I got caught up in what these purely fictional surgeries would sound like. In the end, I chose the funniest sounding option and left it at that, but still left a lot of medications and surgeries with no sound effects.

I created new art, and effects for surgeries, in amputations I made it so a piece of the customer's sprite was cut, randomly, and for replacement limbs I drew a human arm and placed it randomly with the customer. There was a rather nefarious bug that I didn't have time to figure out, where the effect would work properly once, then fail with an odd stretching, dotted pattern. I tried to fix this, failed, and decided to leave it.

I tested the game, and found a number of small bugs to iron out, and also commenced with hiding my debug UI from the end user (just button collision boxes, mostly). I took the time to write a tutorial prompt and pretty up some items on the desk.

I had to create, quickly (about 10 minutes? probably less?) a game over screen, which I used a stock photo of prison for reference.

Release Panic!

With an hour to release, I made a discovery and panicked! My fixed resolution wasn't scaled properly at some common resolutions, meaning for some players they'd be able to see a number of things that should have been off screen, and it also wouldn't be sized for the screen appropriately, about half the size it was supposed to be.

I didn't have time to fix this properly, but something had to be done about the ability to see the operating room, and the front counter at the same time. In a rush, I made a 4k image, cut out a hole for the smaller resolution, and threw it over the game UI. This hid the operating room, but technically, it was all still accessible.

That 'fixed', I compiled the game and submitted to itch, and relaxed until presentation time. I was done.

Presentation Time

Presentation was a big of a mess. It's a mostly in person event, and most things are planned with the intent of having everyone there. I wasn't, and had to wait my turn in the chaotic speaker connected to a group discord voice chat.

I had my thoughts together, knew exactly what I wanted to say, but by the time my turn came up, I was frazzled. I rushed through the explanations of the systems of the game, and I failed to show the variety of problems, and worst of all, all the effects and polish I worked on for the last 5 hours, I completely forgot to show it off! Overall I still think my presentation was fine, but I was disappointed by my own standards on showing the full game. I also forgot to give other jammers a chance for questions, which would have been polite. Well, better luck next year!

Awards

Now for (some) the most exciting part. The award ceremony. I was very surprised to find I took home the "Most Educational" category with Surgeon's Please. Here's a photo of the trophy.

Overall, I'm really happy with Surgeon's Please, and if I deduct sleeping / eating times, I can very easily say it was made in less than a day. Till next time!

Disclaimer: I'm only posting about this because someone has been block evading and stalking my blog to pick fights instead of talking things out with me, which I've been told by a friend classifies as harassment and a form of cyberbullying, especially when I did not respond to him/interact with him beyond a now deleted vent, so I'm just gonna talk about this and hopefully never have to address it again... because this shit is very tiring and I have been putting up with it for days on end now, especially while it had been my birthday at some point.

I just wanna say that if you ever feel like I had officially wronged you in the past, I don't mind apologizing for it, but to continue slandering me for my past wrongs on a public platform instead of privately venting to a friend or talking to me about it is not the way to go.

Of course, I won't deny that I wasn't always the best partner, but I've been here on this hellsite for at least 8 years or longer now, so it's not like I can recall every instance where I dropped threads, not follow through in interacting with past mutuals, or even hurt someone without personally knowing.

Granted, I get people disliking me happens to be an inevitable part of life, but blocking me should really be the end of it. Seriously, if I have not once bothered you or harassed you first, that does not give you the grounds to repeatedly stalk me, vague about me, or argue/debate with me in the replies of a confession blog (especially when you have me hard-blocked).

It's also very disingenuous to claim I'm still the same person that I was years ago, so if needed, I will defend myself, but I think many of my mutuals who have been here since the inception of this blog can personally vouch for the fact I do practice what I preach and know that I now ship with only two people at best and have moved past the point of caring about giving my OC more romantic ships without the proper substance, development, or build up.

It should also be noted that I constantly bring up I have autism if only because it affects how I communicate with others/how I get my points across and to pretend it doesn't would be a huge disservice on my part, as it does affect my social skills, both online and offline. That, however, does not mean I'm using it as an excuse but as an explanation, because too often, I have experienced neurotypical folks being ableist towards me and holding me up to neurotypical standards (ie: thinking I would be able to get hints if they somehow enforce the silent treatment) and unlike many others, I don't have the luxury of acting like I don't have it, because it's a permanent part of who I am that I can't completely mask no matter how hard I might try to do so.

Of course, that doesn't mean I'll refuse to be held accountable for my actions, but at the same time, I won't hesitate to speak out against ableism, point out how I have a different perspective on things due to me being neurodivergent, or defend myself if I feel like I'm being unfairly treated.

TLDR, though? Just talk to me or vent about me privately. Like, I honestly believe I'm a reasonable enough person, so if you tell me I did something to hurt you, then I will listen and apologize, but continuing to obsess over me/hold a grudge against me/misconstrue my points when I haven't been mutuals with you in years like some creepy, butt-hurt ex is not the behaviour of an adult. It's the behaviour of a child who can't let things go.

And believe me, I get being salty, but vaguing about someone more than twice in a row on tumblr is genuinely not a healthy outlet. Of course, it would be one thing if Tumblr was a site where you can set your blog to private like Twitter, but anything you post can be seen by the general public, so at the end of the day, you're achieving nothing by typing out misinformed clapbacks but make yourself look like an ass.

Also, be careful when using the phrase, 'Don't use your autism as an excuse', because depending on the context, it can come across as mansplaining or an ableist, thought-terminating cliché at best.

I understand the nuances of Dorian's life in Dragon Age, my big fear is that Bioware will piggy back off of something pre-established as a "OH see! Lore building!" as a way to hand wave away queer romances that just are. I've been playing the mass effect remaster and there's big backlash on not bringing back cut queer content. The excuse is always something about not wanting to hurt sales and upset parents and it sucks. I'm worried that they'll use pre-established stories that are real and genuine, and use it as an excuse to avoid substantial queer content.

I really, really don't see them doing that, honestly. Dragon Age (and Mass Effect) are both rated M. I've never seen BioWare once claim they have avoided content out of fear of "upsetting parents", because it's not a game they're marketing to children in the first place. In fact— every single entry of Dragon Age, they've been adding to the significance of queer characters, and giving them more agency in the narrative at large.

In DAO, they had (to my knowledge; I've not been in the fandom since ye olde days) some of the first queer representation in gaming I could even think of— and genuine romance, too, not just a gag or off-screen reference of queer people. Now, could you marry Alistair and become King of Ferelden as a m!Cousland? No. Was the subject of sexuality / same sex couples in Thedas really addressed aside from "sometimes they fuck"? No. It was still very bare-bones. But still way more than most games I know at the time.

In DA2, they said "fuck it, everyone's bi", in a way that both took steps forward (no default heterosexuality for characters) as well as steps back in that by just having everyone being bi, there was less of actual queer stories being told as much vs sort of a blanket "playersexual" narrative you'll see people sometimes site (as well as with some massive nasty bi erasure in removing Anders' lines regarding Karl for fHawke, which I won't defend lmao). But it was so nice to go into a game knowing that the character I ended up liking the most I could romance without fear of them being straight-locked.

In DAI, I think they recognized that this was not the ideal form of representation, as we had the first instances of characters being homosexual-locked, as well as dialogues and narratives specifically addressing the characters as such, as well as the first game I've ever played with a canonical transgender character not played for laughs. Now, was everything done perfect? No, not really. I've never played Sera's romance all the way through but seeing videos of her personal quests really... make me think I probably never will. RIP. And the fact that Krem was voiced by a cis woman still makes me :\ pretty hard.

But you know what I see the most with BioWare? They're trying with their representation. Dorian's narrative hit home with me in ways I've never felt in a video game before. Seeing Krem being defended by the Chargers if the Inquisitor makes ignorant remarks about his identity made me smile and feel seen for the first time in gaming. Having the boldness to gay/lesbian-lock characters in a world where heteronormativity is rampant in most of their target market shows signs to me that they're trying to take strides to do more, and better each time— regardless of what's profitable or marketable.

So to be honest, anon— I am not worried about DA4 shying away from queer content, if the trends from the games thus far are anything to go by. BioWare has been attempting to push the envelope and tell more genuine and full-dimensional stories with each entry, and while they might fail and blunder along the way (and be decried online endlessly for it) what matters most to me is that they're trying.

No piece of media is free of flaws, and no doubt we will continue to tell the writers where their writing and representation is problematic. And hopefully, they will continue to listen and try to rectify those issues. But the fact that they're still doing their damned hardest to try even after being chewed out by fandom places (for not getting the representation right) and conservative gamers (for daring to put the "queer agenda" in their game) gives me hope that they are going to continue to try.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I haven’t played any Mass Effect games so I can’t put proper input in on that aspect of things lol. But when it comes to most remasters, I can’t say I’m surprised that they don’t put back in cut content, not because it’s controversial— but because it’s extra time, effort, and thus money. New voice lines, play testing new / variants on quests, etc etc. I doubt the choice to not put in cut queer content was anything other than based on money. If it was free/cheap to do, I don’t see why they wouldn’t slap it on there and market “ALL NEW!! Previously Unseen Content!” for EZ marketing. If BioWare was truly afraid of pissing off people for promoting LGBT content— I think that ship has already sailed with their library of other games with visible queer content.
