Rick and Morty S7 Ep. 2: The Jerrick Trap

(Not Rick, not Jerry, but some secret third thing)

My Favs

The new voice actors:

I wanted to bring this up again because I think that Ian Cardoni has really evolved into his role as the new voice actor for Rick. It’s really hard to believe that Cardoni has only had this job for about month or two but is already playing this character like he’s been there since the beginning. It didn’t once cross my mind during this episode that I was not listening to Justin Roiland anymore. Harry Belden’s Morty sounds like a nice blend of Roiland’s Season 1 and Season 6 performance of that character.

Freaky Friday:

I appreciate that they didn’t do a clean body-swap but gave RickBody and JerryBody an amalgamation of the two minds in conflict with each other, but then evolving over the course of the episode into someones (or something) with its own identity.

Chuxly:

I kinda have a soft spot for Chuxly. He’s just a mid-tier criminal who’s trying not to cause any unnecessary trouble. He doesn’t need any incompetent goons kidnapping the precious grandson of the most dangerous man in the universe and he’ll kiss as much ass as he can until his lips are ass-colored.

So gross but RickBody looked so happy! Also I get why RickBody and JerryBody would like that movie because it is so dumb and so weird in a good way.

God I love their cute name for each other! Also, am I the only person who found them snorting crystals together as they remember their love for Morty weirdly endearing.

I don’t blame Summer for wanting to listen to a podcast. I would want to distract myself from whatever that is driving the car.

The Stupid Rake Gag:

This joke is older than God herself and in hindsight I should have seen this coming. The inciting incident was due to Gene stealing a rake. It was all laid out for this to happen but it was so cleverly concealed until it happened that I was absolutely taken off-guard. God I love that Jerry and Rick were rescued from their monstrous Jerricky form by a corny rake gag.

Rick and Jerry care about each other. They really do!

Though they’ll never admit it.

Memory Rick!

He’s alive and well and kept Rick and Jerry from completely losing their minds to Jerricky. Sadly, he might be stuck in Jerry’s mind for awhile unless he can make use of springs and gears and only springs and gears. I imagine there’s going be an episode in the future about his escape.

My Not Favs:

Jerricky:

He will haunt my dreams until my dying breath in which he will then greet me at the gates of Hell where he will orchestrate my torture for all eternity and a day. Personally, I wasn’t a huge fan of Jerricky and the final fight with him and why did they give it a six-pack? Neither Jerry or Rick have a six-pack. Who do they think they’re fooling?

Rick’s mind was a bit overpowering:

Maybe this is because Rick is a character with such a big personality but I felt like the aspects that could be Jerry was a bit drowned out. RickBody and JerryBody acted mostly like Rick with sprinkles of Jerry rather than an even mix of the two.

A criminal lack of Morty:

Morty (or should I say, Rick Jr.) maybe turning into a little criminal but I would like to have some more screen time with him. There’re eight more episodes left so I’m not too worried about this but I think Morty is a little underutilized for a character who has some great story potential (and his name is in the title of the show). However, I’m glad we got to see more of him compared to the last episode. He is getting so confident and not waiting around for his grandpa/dad and dad/grandpa to get himself out of trouble.

My Thoughts:

I love myself a Rick and Jerry team-up episode and this episode was no different. Rick and Jerry may never admit it, but they are more alike than different and their minds meld well together ( as long as they don’t make a Jerricky). The Rick/Jerry dynamic has always been rife with conflict since the first episode when Jerry tried to convince Beth to put Rick in a nursing home because Rick pulled Morty out of school, repeatedly, behind their backs. In a sweet moment in the middle of the episode we hear them admit that Rick doesn’t believe Jerry is useless and that Jerry sees Rick as a friend. By the end of the episode, they are back to bickering at each other again but we know as an audience that it comes from a place of love for each other and their love for Summer, Morty and Daughterwife. This episode, in my mind, was much stronger than last week’s and oh so weird in the best possible way, except for maybe Jerricky. Jerricky was the weakest part of the episode with the fight scene being a bit lackluster for an otherwise bonkers episode. Though that rake gag killed me. They really did just sneak that in and thought I wouldn’t notice, which I didn’t so good job on their part. It absolutely felt like a classic Rick and Morty episode and I hope each episode continues getting better and better. Also, it was nice seeing Memory Rick again and,

“Yeah, Memory Rick, Rick totally got rid of you on purpose.”

Rise Leonardo HEADCANNONS

While he is often joked to be the gay one on the team, he is actually abrosexual who currently switches between bisexual and or pansexual.

His favorite singers are Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Arianna Grande and at times will listen to Justin Bieber.

His favorite comics are DC and his favorite is the Flash and also enjoys Kid Flash. He also loves Beast Boy because he finds him funny.

Leo knows how to cook and bake. Though doesn't really do it often. He does it when he is hungry or bored. Or simply when Mikey can't make them any food.

He has actually babysitted Senor Hueso's son a few times. Mostly taking him out for ice cream, arcade and also buy him whatever he wanted.

Leo enjoys finding any poster or anything with some kind of picture on paper and hanging it on his walls in his room. He also enjoys at times just getting another copy of a comic he already has and cutting out pages and plastering them on his wall thinking it looks cool.

He enjoys collecting action figures and will actively snatch one he finds even if it came from the trash can.

Donnie judges Leo's outfit choices on many occasions and Leo learnt to deal with it. Though then he would just trash Donnie's clothes and make a mess whenever he gives him the most hurtful judgement.

When he is dealing with stress or feeling depressed he will shut his door, plop headphones on, get cuddled and put on his favorite movies and admire characters who he can relate to.

He jokes being a blonde girl after 'Bad Hair Day' episode.

He doesn't like cream the best. Despite that, he will devour cream cake anytime.

Whenever he wants to vent, he looks at a mirror and puts a photo of one of his family members or friends and start venting to them. He would eventually after the events of the movie start to communicate properly and start to genuinely vent to his close ones. He felt as if it was better then to bottle his emotions.

While he is seen as the type of guy to swear on a daily, he actually swears the least along with Donnie. Only when he is fully in-raged and in need of using curse words to express his rage or any other emotion of his. I'd say he is the 3rd to swear.

He actually sneaks out a lot with April to skateboard at a roller skating park at night.

If he had an Instagram, most of his pictures would be of his brothers sleeping or just fails or pranks.

He sliced a rabbit in half... (I feel like certain shippers are gonna come for me or start making jokes about that one rabbit character TMNT has crossovers with lmao-)

For absolutely, NO REASON, he begged Draxum to film him doing a very dangerous stunt with his tentacles. That day he broke 75 limbs and 2 of his ribs and lost 100 pounds of blood (not really but he broke a lot of bones)

He's a sci-fi nerd. Besides, Jupiter Jim, his favorite sci-fi movies are Star Wars, E.T., Monsters VS Aliens, Batman VS Superman.

He loves poor quality movies because he can then make fun of them. That's why him and Raph stopped watching live-action Disney movies-

He developed massive claustrophobia when Raph sacrificed himself for him and got in the pod.

Clings onto Raph after the movie and they both put a leash on each other 24/7 to make sure they are safe. Also since Leo is aware of the tracking devices, he always asks Donnie where Raph is. The same is with everyone else.

Tell me your story about TK? For me, Taehyung’s photo found me on IG in early January (of this year) and I went down the BTS rabbit hole and then on a quest to understand their relationship. While those two hold a special place, I love BTS’ music and all the members’ interactions.

So I'm a little older, I've been into kpop and kdrama since the second generation (early 2000s). Life happens, and I fell out of everything. Didn't know who's who's in kpop, haven't watched kdramas for years. About last year I have two friends and colleagues, they're younger, talking about kpop but specifically BTS. I was like, been there, done that I don't think I can get into that again. They talked, and I listened. One even went to their Vegas concert. Around February or March of this year, I was on YouTube, and one of their Run BTS episodes popped up on my feed. Next thing you know, I'm spiraling down the BTS rabbit hole, hahaha.

For me, I noticed Taekook after the whole Paris walk event. Not gonna lie Taehyung and JK had already been my biases at that point. I noticed how weird the video was right. As timing would have it, I started seeing these taekook analysts' videos on my YT feed, starting watching those. I also rewatched their unedited/analysts clips, and I noticed a special bond between them. As time goes by they keep giving us hints and clues into their relationship.

Most fans don't like nor want to accept the idea that there are gay idols out there. They want their idols to be pure, innocent, untouched and straight. That's not realistic nor true.

Like you I believe in taekook but I'm also OT7. I love BTS music, what they stand for and especially the love the members have for each other.

Usually you wouldn't stay in the institute for the night, even when you just had a very rough mission completed and were done for the day.

No, you preferred going over to your boyfriend, who would welcome you in his loft with open arms at all times. Your boyfriend was warlock Magnus Bane.

He was a delight to say at least and you always cheerished his presence around you, which was why you would bottle up all your strength every evening and go over to him.

Today's night wasn't any different, except that you had decided to shower over at Magnus's as well. Usually you didn't like to come over smelling like the demon you just killed mixed with sweat, but today you just wanted to get away from the shadowhunter-world.

When Magnus opened his door he was all smily and wanted to greet you with a hug, but quickly decided against it, his face turning in distaste.

You chuckled "I'm sorry I didn't shower back in the institute. I just wanted to come here as quick as possible, thought I could wash here."

"No, I understand.", Magnus said "Just as well as I understand your job and what it makes you smell like", he accentuated his statement with some fancy hand moves.

You got in laughing and were able to get a small kiss on the lips from him, then left for the bathroom with a smile.

When you were in the shower you could already smell dinner paired with Magnus's shampoo that you were using. It made you smile and hurry up a little.

You stepped out in the livingroom in some sweats and a t-shirt you had left here for cases like this. This time you were greeted with a big bear hug, which made you feel butterflies in your stomach like a teen again.

The following kiss was deeper than the first and also more handsy, you knew Magnus was feeling you up for wounds even though he wouldn't admit it. He was always concerned for your health, not even the fact of you having runes and all could ease his mind.

"Yeaaah, about that", you let go of him and scratched the back of your head "No homo", you joked.

"Oh damn", Magnus said "And I thought I had you after all those 'hook-ups'"

"I'm straight, dude", you said grinning and shrugging

"Yeah, right, you want to watch Ru Paul while eating our potato cream with caramelized leek and saffron?"

"You bet your sweet ass I want to.", you answered, slapping his ass on your way over to the couch.

Two episodes in, you two started talking about your day while doing each other's nails, which you could tell would look awesome when you were done.

You were drinking cocktails and giving your opinions on the candidates, always joking and on some opportunities making out as well - the evening was perfect for you.

Hours after your arrival (talking like 1am), you finally got into bed, Magnus cuddling up on your chest and immediately falling asleep from how tired he was.

You were smiling, brushing through his hair, and listening to his breath until your eyes would close as well.

i know webgott isn't exactly the ship you primarily write for but GOD i love the way you write modern david webster in maximum volume (and i love his raport with nix it reminds me so much of my own queer friend group in ways i've yet to articulate properly) and i was wondering if you have any headcanons about their coupling and/or their interactions with their friend group (as a couple or individually)?

Haha oh my god, thank you! That's so nice of you to say! I based them loosely on my cousin and his boyfriend, who used to have epic Halloween parties before they got old and decided it was too much work, and if everyone loved it so much, they could damn well volunteer to host it themselves. Alas, no one did.

But David and Joe are still young and fun so let's talk about them. I feel like you should win a prize or something because this is officially the FIRST Webgott ask I've ever received. I do have a few headcanons about them, which did not make it into the fic because I mean, for christ's sake, the thing is already way too long. Anyway, if you'll just follow me...

Even though they knew and liked each other in high school, I don't think they got together until later. Like one time in college they bumped into each other on campus and it was like "I always had a crush on you" - "same" and then they were inseparable. They got married kinda young, around 24 or 25 (I imagined them right around 30 in the fic) and their families were like "... are you SURE you don't want to wait a little longer?" But they don't listen to anyone else, naturally, because what the hell do they know?

I also envisioned them as having gone on some long bike-camping trip up the coast on a tandem bike just before they decided to get married, and something very profound happened on this trip, maybe it just challenged them in ways they'd never been tested before, and they met and overcame those obstacles together and it sort of cemented their bond as a couple. Because if you can successfully ride a tandem with your partner, you can probably weather any storm.

They used to have threesomes with George back in the day but they don't anymore. David and George are good buddies (I've always felt strongly about this, based solely on how George was kind of nice to Webster in that episode when he comes back from the hospital and is just being such a clueless dick). They go see bands together and to see midnight showings of cult movies and stuff like that. Joe actually thinks that if David weren't with him, he and George would be a good couple.

David still has a little teeny tiny crush on Mr. Winters. He wished he knew he was gay when he actually had him as a teacher, but he totally understands why he wasn't out at work.

As mentioned in Ch. 1, they're both journalists. Joe is a sports writer for the major metro daily, David writes for a local news/arts/culture blog. This means they're always out somewhere covering a game or event or whatever, which works for them because the true secret to their success as a couple is their own selfish pursuits of what makes them happy as individuals. They're good at giving each other space to do whatever the fuck they want, knowing that at the end of the day, they don't want anything else as much as they want each other.

Everyone assumes they're about one big blow up away from divorce, but they're actually surprisingly stable. They truly enjoy each other's company and are just as content tending to their flower beds together as they are going to a party or out to the bars with their friends. They worship their cats. They have a Sunday ritual (h/t @anthrobrat) of reading the entire Sunday paper, section by section, David reading the gossip page out loud and being appalled at the list prices of houses in the Real Estate section and saving the Food section because they might actually try one of the recipes this week (they never do). At their core, they're basically just a couple of old queens sliding comfortably into middle age, though their friends would be shocked to see this side of them.

Idk... this is honestly the most I've ever thought about them so I hope it fits with what you were thinking, or at least makes sense with their little cameos in the story. My mind is reeling with the boys thoughts on the party back in Hawkins. Who would is their favorite kid? Who talks to Will about his (cough gay thoughts cough)? Who would have a sass battle and nice comebacks with Max? Who spoils Dustin rotten or becomes a bad influence? Who is trying to not wrangle Mike? WHO TALKS AND GIVE SPORT ADVICE TO MY LUCAS??? WHO IS ABSOLUTELY OVER THE MOON OR FREAKED OUT ABOUT JANE/011'S POWERS??? *I need answers*

This crossover is literally THE perfect thing to me right now so I’m very glad other people like it so I don’t have to shut up about it 😂

Dwayne chills and listens to Will talk, but David is the one who’s actually helpful. He’s good at tough love because he’s an asshole, so it’s what he does for ALL of them. Like, it isn’t necessarily the best approach, but he’d sit there, take a drag, and go “so next time Mike wheeler is ignoring you, you hafta just threaten his life. It’s the only way you’ll get his attention. It’s 1986 who gives a shit anyways”

Dustin and Paul hang out. Dustin hates it at first because he’s like “this guy is a fucking idiot” but Paul has saved Dustin’s ass from surf Nazis like three times now and keeps following him around asking science questions. Progress sure is wild huh” and walk away

Of course, this also means that Paul is a terrible influence on Dustin, and when Steve rolls into town he’s SO mad about it lol

Marko and Max. Absolute pals. At first they can’t STAND each other, but after fifteen minutes of slinging insults back and forth, they realize that they’re totally on the same wavelength. Marko is like the fun older brother that Billy can’t bring himself to be, and they hang out and skate around the boardwalk and run from the cops every night.

Dwayne gives Lucas sports (and girl) advice. They play football on the beach at night and he uses the carnival games on the boardwalk as basketball practice. Even though Dwayne isn’t particularly good at either sport, he’s still a vampire, so he does pretty well lol

They are ALL trying not to throttle Mike like it’s an episode of the simpsons. They’re a group of dudes who are all sort of dating each other and don’t let anybody get in the way of that, so it’s like a very gay bros before hoes thing, except they’re both the bros AND the hoes in their situation. The point is, they would see how Mike’s relationship with El has been shoving his friendships to the side, and they wouldn’t like that. I also don’t really think they would get along with him at first, because he would make some comments that they absolutely HATE and all be asking Steve if he REALLY needs all of these kids or if he would be okay with them chomping on one

David would think el’s powers are neat. They wouldn’t freak the vampires out too much, since they can play mind tricks on humans already, and they would want to test things out and see if they can pull their usual pranks on her or not.

The frog brothers are spying the entire time and they’re SO freaked out about El. They’re calling Sam up to tell him that the government has come to Santa Carla and it’s only a matter of days before they’re all turned into lizard people

Final thoughts

This episode was absolutely amazing and everyone killed it. I can’t wait to see what happens in next months episode. I suspect well see Adelaide at some point in the future I hope its not as a member of the children of brimstone but I suspect Elijah will have to fight her at some point. We will absolutely be seeing Layla again but I wonder how big of a part she is going to play. I love how we got to “see” the relationship between Ali Jason and Elijah with how much it has changed since episode 1. They’re actively calling each other friends now that takes a lot especially with someone like Eli. I love these fools. relationship status: single but sometimes i invent a little romance for myself in my head which is fun until i have to confront the fact that it’s made up!!! that part is less fun

Y’all… I came up with a new scooby doo spinoff.

It starts out with most of the gang already friends except for Daphne. She’s a popular bitch. HOWEVER in the beginning of the first episode she realizes how toxic her friend group is and is then in the back of some scenes (not drawing any focus to her so when you rewatch you see her) and sees how shitty her “friends” are to the gang. She apologizes and at first the gang doesn’t trust her. Then she brings in the beloved character of scrappy doo who is a stuffed dog she made for scooby from scraps she had from some clothes she made! Scrappy is a non speaking character and is Scooby’s toy now. He loves scrappy and loves Daphne now. This happens in the first 1-2 episodes. That’s it. She realizes her “friends suck” in the first episode and by the end of the second she gives scooby the stuffed dog she made out of scrappys.

Daphne is the muscle. She has done kick boxing and MMA since she was a child! He parents are rich “cool” parents (think the mom from Mean Girls).

In the first episode (first 5 minutes) we see daphne listening to a true crime podcast but have to hide it when her “friends come around”. We also see her hiding how good her grades are in a later scene. She gets an A and then lies and says she only gets a C when pestered by her “friends”. As soon as she starts to be around the gang her “friends” make fun of her and daphne stands up for them WITHOUT them being present. She is doing it on her own accord without expecting gratitude.

Shaggy is a stoner because he has anxiety and the edibles help him calm down. He is hella aromatic but it’s not a big thing. They mention it and just move on. We love shaggy and don’t fuck with his character too much.

Fred is a dork. He’s on the chess club and that’s where he learned his love of trapping. He also is a hardcore feminist. People bullied a kid when they were younger for wearing ascots so he started to wear one with the kid so the kid wasn’t alone and now wears is all the time. That is a side character who is lovable named Fate (we will come back to them.

Velma is lesbian and Shaggy is her beard. He was the first person she ever told and he supports her whole heartedly. Her parents suck and aren’t supportive so he is her beard until they get out of high school and can move in together. Velma makes the scooby snacks. They look like Shaggy’s edibles because scooby got sad when Shaggy wouldn’t share.

Scooby is scooby. He’s a Great Dane who loves his family (the gang). He gets Scrappy and starts to treat it almost like a babydoll. He tucks ut in and pushes himself to get past being scared to “be a good role model” and “wants to get rid of the monsters” for scrappy.

Fate is Velma’s girlfriend. Fate is trans (male to female). They wore an ascot as a kid as a way to wear a scarf without being “gay”. Fred comes in the next day wearing one and they become best friends immediately. It’s not as bad when you have a friend to lean on. Fate helps Velma a lot. When Velma is hyper focusing she will help Velma out. This is a fully fleshed out character and is the one who painted the mystery machine.

Shaggy, Velma and Fred all have a true crime podcast. Daphne finds out about this and joins. They first let her because her uncle is the police chief and she convinced him to let her look at some cold cases with her friends (she 100% used that as a way to convince them to let her join). They all soon bond and start solving these mysteries.

Here's me complaining about s4 on the internet because I have no friend

BEWARE, there will be a LOT of SPOILERS about STRANGER THINGS SEASON 4. Also I have a very annoying style of writing but I can't give two shit about fixing it for the moment.

The way I felt so NUMB watching this season.

I was SO hyped because I love stranger things and the first two seasons were awesome and I liked the fun and freshness that season 3 bring along

But GOSH was this season not good. I had HOPES for the last two eps, thinking the first sevens were kind of an introduction to the big finale but lol. They were the worst. So many things felt random.

I would have been fine about Eddie dying if this would have made sense. I felt like he died because it was easier than finding a way to redeem him for the Hawkins people. "I didn't run" ????? you were dumb huh ? The fact that you decided to stay in the upside down in the first place was already you NOT RUNNING. You didn't have to stay put in one place waiting for the bats to kill you. That makes no SENSE. "Not running" in that context was to be meant METAPHORICALLY you dumb SHIT. Like not running away from your problems not, not running physically. Gosh I'm so angry and I didn't even particularly liked this character.

Don't get me started about the way Mike and Will had no reason to be on this season at all. "oh but Mike helped El in the end" waouw AWESOME, clap clap, I DONT CARE. It's like on the last day on the set the writers wondered who that blue shirt guy was and suddenly remembered "OH YES !!!! Him!!!!" and gave one (1) useful line at the end ??????? As useful as his father, I see.

The way they used Will was a disgrace.

"And that people, is a gay little dude"

"Oh ! Ok ! So, hm, does he do something or ?"

"Yes. He's, listen to that awesome thing : sad gaying"

"No no, I meant, does he do something useful story-wise, like is the fact that he is in the story making any difference at all ?"

"He's gay. And sad. Isn't that enough already :D ?! Also he draws. "

URGH. I love Will and we didn't get to see him tortured for TWO seasons to just have him wandering in the back doing nothing but be gay and having a cold neck from time to time for two whole seasons.

When RandomWeedDude that I don't even recall the name of had more importance and good scenes than two of your main characters, maybe this is a sign that stuff are no that great.

Another thing I really didn't like (shocker, I know) was : THE PACING. You don't get to spend 5 billions hours with eleven in Nina just to tell us Papa was a bad man (would could have guessed. MAYBE EVERYONE WHO WATCHED THE FIRST SEASON ALONE), but like he wasn't just a bad man, no it’s way worse than that kiddo, he was a really really REALLY bad man :o !!!! And Ok the twist with 001 was nice but did we need to spent that much time uncovering the fucking memory of how papa was bad and that mystery blond dude might not be a good person after all. And yes, Eleven is not a bad person nor a monster, nice that she knows that, I admit. The pacing just sucks.

I'm not against having multiple teams doing multiples differents things at the same times but the way it was done in the last episode was not it. It became boring quickly because there were toooooo many teams to follow, toooooo many dangers and tooooo many characters and new rules and new powers and and and URGH. When it jumped from a scene to another I barely had time to adjust to the "Oh wait, what were those guys doing already ? Is this the frightening, sad or funny situation?" that it jumped to another scene. So the tension was kind of ruined for me. Especially when it make things like Steve, Robin and Nancy choke for 30 minutes of the episode. I don't get to be scared for them or their safety because it cuts back and forth to being choked "to death". For 30 long minutes. So I know there is no way they're dying. Wasn't scared a second for hopper because he just doesn't die, because he's a cowboy and his mean and determined face is enough to just not die. He's just in Russia for 9 episodes. Good times. Please never do that again. I would have rather watch him miraculously reappear randomly in the season like "hey guess who fought the commies" and never explain how he did it.

The different arcs were way too long. From episode 3 to 8, El is in the lab, from episode 3 to 8 the pizza guys are in a van, from episode 1 to 9 Hopper is in Russia. It just felt redundant and boring especially considering how long the ep are.

Let's talk about Vecna, because why not. He is goofy. It's the first season of stranger things where I'm not scared a single bit. The clocks and the things he does to his victims and how he uses their guilt against them : NICE. His body : Not Nice. Everytime I saw him in a scene it just killed the vibe. You're not scary in a humanly form. I'm not saying the make up or the costume aren't well made, I'm just saying, Billy being possessed and sweaty was way scarier. Shadow monster was scary. Demogorgons were scary. Vecna is just dumb looking.

There is many more things that I didn’t like about this season (Steve and Nancy fake romantic interest why ? To what end ?) but I’m hungry and most of my annoyance is gone just writing it all off.

Still, Kudos to people who worked on the sets and to all of the actors and actresses, you were the reason I stayed. Directing wise it was a nice experience to witness and the music and use of sounds were always a banger. I’m not even a single bit planning of ever watching season 5 (please Act as if I never wrote this if you see me complaining about the newest episode in two or three years) but I was still glad I got to watch the first three seasons.

To finish this wonderful essay, I’d like to say : I don’t care that my rambling doesn’t make sense or that I’m too harsh or that I’m wrong. I’m right to me and that’s all I care about. I finally get it most of it out of my chest thanks to this hellsite.

I watch a lot of true crime t.v. I don’t know something about watching criminals who deserve it get caught. I watch Snapped. It is very funny to me, not like Ha Ha funny, but like, I’m sure most of these women are Borderlines like me. I trip because, I get it. I was watching the one the other day, about Brynn and Phil Hartman and think to myself, why are people like that? So because I am a bisexual person I really don’t like pronouns right, because you don’t have to be a man to be a divine masculine, you can be a woman, or trans man, you don’t have to be a woman to be a divine feminine. I believe that you can be a gay man, and be divinely feminine, I don’t think Trans women can be divine feminines though. Don’t ask me what my logic is, I just I think that spiritual connection just doesn’t allow for that, there is already, I don’t know. Spirit will put that on my heart to write about at some point, but not tonight. I will just try and stay on topic, it is late, and I want to go to bed but I didn’t write…so I’m f’ckng writing. I say all that to say, I use the phrase “ni**as”to refer to all masculine entities, male or female, and also for black and white people alike.

Anyway, I was listening to how Brynn Hartman, before she was Brynn Hartman, she was a model, an aspiring actress, she was a writer, and had big dreams, of making it in Hollywood. Phil Hartman was on Saturday Night Live, he was this awesome guy, and he was just the bees knees. Brynn at the end of the day had shot him, then Killed herself. So Brynn, after all of this was labeled a druggie, they called her evil, a monster, dramatic. It was said that she would come to the set of the show, and blow up at him, argue with him, try and get him fired all kinds of stuff. The whole time, everyone keeps talking about how Phil was just this angelic being, with rainbows and sunshine coming out of his ass, when he farts. But when you talk to people close to Brynn, they described him as this person who, was emotionally closed off from his wife. The exact words were, He would come home, and “Shut her out” I watch all these episodes of snapped and they say most the same thing about every woman, how she is horrible, and a monster. I have heard these same things about myself, like, when I realized what was going on I decided I needed to really chill before I snap and kill a mutha fcka myself, these type of people, they are cunning. But everything goes to the same about the guy, you can’t find a person, who would say anything bad about the guy. Rainbow farts.

He was gentle, he was kind he would give the shirt off of his back, would do anything for anyone, and while, I believe most of these women, like I can hear the story and kind of gauge right, who is and isn’t a monster, but for the most part, I legit feel like most of these women, are borderlines and they ended up with raving narcissists. I always think about it when I think of my own circumstances, like these people do everything they can, to get you, Somehow, they go the length however long it takes, mostly not taking no for an answer, very persistent, moving through the relationship to fast, but you go along cause you’re an idiot right, and once they got you right where they want you, They make sure that they build a life for you that is difficult at the end of the day to leave… My baby dad thought he was going to stick me with a kid, My ex wife thought I wouldn’t divorce her, ever, and every b’tch I ever lived with didn’t understand how quick, rather she wanted us or not, me and my kids could go back to my moms, even this current one, chickens, a dog, the trans man friend, like ugh. They try to make life difficult for you to live without them, painting you the whole time, out to be this crazy person, this monster, and they are farting rainbows because people don’t know them, in the close and very personal way that you know them. There is a phrase right, and I don’t recall ever being asked this myself but I can only imagine, because the other words that you hear often dealing with these kinds of people are liar, manipulator… I’m talkin people men who have never even met me, never even dated me, calling me a liar, but the phrase is ; The adult asks, “ so everyone is lying, except you right?” And the kid answers “yea, because they knew you wouldn’t believe me” and if I was any kid, or adult I’m that kid, I’m that adult.

When I started dating this one, we were alone, in a room at work I was sitting down, and he was standing. I can’t remember the exact conversation but I know it wasn’t going his way. He grabbed my wrist, and was twisting it, and digging his nails in my skin. I got up and walked out, cause this is my job, and I will beat your ass in here, and saw his friend in the hallway, and didn’t know this one was on my tail, but I told the bastard friend, “like yo you better tell your boy to keep his hands to himself, the m’fer just grabbed me” and you know what that b’tch said? “Yea we don’t believe that, right, cause that’s not even the type of guy you are” I started laughing, I mean dying laughing,and without a thought, I. Said” that is funny, because that’s the type of shit, a m’fer say, right after the guy murders his wife like “ I would have never thought that he was like that, I would have never guessed he was a monster he was such a good guy” yea you would’nt know because you don’t have to live with the m’fer, you wouldn’t know because you don’t have to sleep with the b’tch, or share finances, or have a personal relationship with them. That not only goes for friends but family too, don’t say sh’t to me about I handle your family member, in this f’cking relationship, cause you never slept with them, f’ck you. I watched a TikTok vid the other day, and it blew my mind, the caption was “abusers, don’t only groom the abused. They also groom theirs and the abused persons friends, family, and the the abused persons co workers, infects this whole network with grooming, so that they don’t listen too or take seriously the abused persons complaints, or comments, basically making it impossible, for this person to seek help.” And IT IS DISGUSTING!!! How the network of narcissists, out weighs the network of support. When victims come forward, with allegations, ANY abuse or, of rape, sexual abuse, Whatever, no one, you can’t say anything to anyone about anything, because before you actually run into someone, who believes you, and can help you, you first run into other abusers, looking to abuse and traumatize you some more, because no one will ever believe you, because this network has labeled you a liar, and if that doesn’t work, your’e crazy. What is worse is that this Narcissist, because you attracted them right is probably the same type as, the parent who abused you. For instance, after I separated from my ex-wife, my father said to me, “I knew that this was going to happen, I knew that once I moved out, That girl was gonna do some bullshit” he told me he said “ listen, whatever you do, don’t get back with that lady” and I made it my business to not. I am cordial, but bitter ex I will never be, when I’m done I am done. My dad told me specifically not too, and I never asked why. Whatever secrets, she shared with him, went with him to his grave, he never told me anything, and I never asked. My mother, the person whose vagina I came from, keeps in contact with most of my ex lovers, I even have decided that I don’t go to anymore of her parties, because she invites them. When I asked why, they are just her parties and she can invite who she wants too. You’re right you can. I know how to not be bothered.

But given what I’ve read, if you have a narcissistic parent, they groom you, so that it will always be them who treats you like shit, or, a person like them that treats you like shit, and they are good friends. One will encourage you to keep around with the other, It disgusts me to even think about. I used to be a person, who couldn’t see wrong, like in anyone, until they showed me they were f’cked up, I used to have a great deal of faith in humanity, now I have none. I question everything and everyone. I especially stay away from you, if you exhibit certain personality traits, I can not f’ck with you. I don’t even wait for more flags on the play anymore, I be out on the first red flag, I’m blowing the whistle, and I forfeit the game. Because the ones like, Phil Hartman, these people that “could never hurt anybody” or “the ones who will do anything for anybody” “givin the shirt off their back” “ the people who are just to good, to be goin through it, wit a monster like me” are narcissistic abusers behind closed doors, and I no longer want any parts. Period. They either like to cheat, or communicate with their ex’s or, keep in touch with their pasts, but don’t want to leave you right? Or if they don’t cheat, they are cold hearted, emotionally void people. Either way, I have no desire for my own episode of snapped. It’s the physical bars I can’t do.

Season 2 of The Magnus Archives was an experience.

Season 1 was fun and atmospheric, but even as the plot outside of the statements became more and more prevalent, the vibes of it were still very anthology horror. From the start, S2 diverged from that with the addition of Jon's supplementals at the end of each statement--with the meta plot and the statements being far more tightly interwoven. The mystery is no longer whether or not what is going on is real, or Jane Prentiss: Prentiss is dead, and we know the supernatural is real for certain, and more to the point, so does Jon, and he always has.

Hearing that in MAG039 that Jon has always believed the "real" statements--the ones that would not record on modern equipment, only on tape--but had pretended not to because he felt watched was something of a reframing of everything for me.

Until then, I hadn't really thought about how, oh, yeah, they're still doing the bogus ones that record easy peasy as well as the ones we hear.

Maybe it would have been easier to keep it in mind if I was listening to the episodes as they aired (like one a week, I believe?) instead of binging them. Like...that would have really sold the toll you can hear them take on Jon. Once a week, you encounter a statement that won't record like the rest, and the dread creeps up on you as you know, you know, what is written down here on these pages is different to the vast majority of what fills the archive, and you desperately do not want to think that means it is real, but you sit down with your tape recorder and you do your job and as you recite those awful awful words you can Feel you are not alone. Something Is Seeing You.

It Really makes the accidents he makes re: dates and names in some statements more understandable, actually. And explains why he doesn't want to re record them to fix those mistakes--sounds exhausted at the very idea.

I was keeping this in mind as I went through S2, using it to inform my new understanding of Jon's character and the progression of his arc and development--

--and then the finale, and perhaps more pertinently, the first episode of S3, broke that understanding once more down to its foundations.

(Keep in mind that I have not seen past MAG081. I stopped myself from progressing further so as to not give myself even MORE backlog on my liveblog posts to finish, and to write out my thoughts on Jonathan Sims as he and they stand right now, before canon gives me more to work with.

I reiterate: I have only seen up to MAG081, 'A Guest For Mr. Spider;' please do not spoil me for anything further along in canon.)

The revelation that MAG081 gave me is both very layered and very simple (and, I'm sure, has been discussed to death already because I am very late to this party :P): Jon's character is best understood through the lens of his trauma.

Of course, it makes his hatred of Leitners make so much more sense, as well as his hatred of spiders--I think it personally even made some things click as to why he was so quick to believe Jane Prentiss as Real when he denied other events with similar amounts of evidence; while I have since come to the conclusion that whatever the spiders are, They ARE Their Own Thing, I was initially lumping them in with the other bugs, and Jon, encountering a worm woman, could very well have done the same--these are things he has survived, and thus fears all the more intently, because he knows them.

What's quite a bit more telling about Jon As A Person to me, though, is the things he says in his own statement that he seems not to think much of. Jonathan Sims was, by his own words, a "deeply annoying child," and I can't begin to explain how much that hurts me, as an ND adult who related to a lot of how he explained his reading habits, though in the other direction (I would fixate on only one thing and read it and only it for weeks).

It opened up my eyes to the fact that Jon definitely sees himself in a negative light. I'm not sure just yet how deep that self hatred runs, but there's no denying it's there. Somehow, he buried his pessimism under his mask of skepticism and snark, but it's almost more real than either of those things, and it's only aggravated by the survivor's guilt he carries even to this day.

It's a lot. This man--I don't yet know Jon's exact age, but from context clues of his personal timeline he has to be around thirty, I think? Maybe just before or past it?--underwent a severe trauma at the age of eight. It's very much understood that the first decade of life very much does inform a lot of who you'll grow up to be, and Jon didn't undergo anything so easy to explain as a car accident or physical abuse. No, on top of the already damaging record of being an orphan and being raised by a grandmother he knew resented having to do so, Jon's greatest childhood trauma came in the form of watching a bully twice his age getting taken by a giant spider that had initially been aiming for him.

That's...not something you can explain, and have believed, and Jon knew that. But it also means it's something he couldn't get support for; it means that even as he knew it was real and remembered it as real he was likely asking himself: Was That Real? and that sort of doubting of your reality is damaging for anyone, let alone a child under ten!

Is it any wonder, then, that he found himself drawn to puzzling out the paranormal? Is it any wonder, then, that when encountering more cases of true encounters, that his idea was equal to the childish and simple ideal of If I Can't See You, You Can't See Me?

And is it, then, any wonder, how spectacular a mental breakdown he has in the lead up to the S2 finale?

Going into TMA, I was told by almost all my friends who have listened to it that I was going to like Jon. "He's your type," they told me, "total blorbo material," and listening to the early episodes I could only think...surely not. What do they think of me?

But I first started to change my mind around the time of his first live statement; Naomi Herne. Maybe I read this differently than most, but for all his bluster and terrible bedside manner (which actually got him a complaint, which is still hysterical, I'll be more lovely, he says, like this is something he's been harped on at before, in those exact words), I sincerely do think that when he suggested she reach out and maybe speak to someone: he was being sincere. She just took it poorly, because Jon had spent the rest of their time together acting poorly.

This is a running theme as time goes on--even more so throughout S2, to be honest. But it doesn't just start after the trauma of the S1 finale; Martin is being menaced by Jane Prentiss, because he encountered her trying to prove himself to Jon's exacting standards, after Jon has spent the rest of the season thus far being hypercritical of him? With MAG081 in mind, it's easy to see how Jon's survivors guilt immediately kicks into gear and berates him for how he's been acting when he knows, he knows that the supernatural is out there and it's deadly.

He immediately tells Martin to stay in the archives, where he thinks it will be safe. And this compassion continues as a core part of his character, even if that's really all we get to see of it--the core, under the mask. He's gentle and concerned with Sasha in her live statement, too, and immediately goes to argue with Elias about better "defenses" for the archives with new knowledge in mind. And it doesn't end there! He's still a snarky little bitch about it, but each interaction with Melanie throughout S1 and S2 made me :D. And, one of perhaps the most standout moments in my mind, currently:

Helen Richardson. God, I'm still having so many feelings about that episode.

Imagine you're Jon. You've spent all this time thus far trying desperately not to see the things you are seeing so as to not be seen by the thing you are sure is seeing you, but then a worm woman attacks you, and you're badly scarred, and your predecessor was murdered, and there's an itching sense of Something Is Wrong, Someone Here Is Lying To Me that you cannot shake, and it is only aggravating your paranoia. On top of that, you can no longer hide your head away in the sand; you have admitted your skepticism was an act, you are throwing yourself headfirst into chasing after the spooky things you've only been reading about up to this point because you need answers, and even when you're not running around in creepy tunnels, you cannot escape the new reality that you have found yourself a part of because it is now choosing to intrude on you directly.

Jon's instant connection with Helen--and his recognition of Michael and, no doubt, his subtle, unconscious fear that Helen could have very well been Sasha--is currently one of the most tragic things that have happened in TMA, outside of Sasha herself (don't worry, ha, I am Bracing For Worse).

Jon's history with the live statement givers isn't the greatest; outside of Martin and Sasha, they all seemed to find him short or abrasive at best, even if they didn't all lead to a formal "knock it off" from Elias. But with Helen, he's sympathetic, he's empathetic, he's gentle, he believes her, and when she's taken once more by the very monster that she had managed to escape, right from his office--well, he attacks that monster. Give her back, he says, of a woman he's known for five minutes, and gets stabbed for his trouble.

I am not a brave man, Jon says of himself, but I think that's more of his negative self framing, because you can be brave and still afraid, brave and still a coward; the antithesis to bravery is not fear, it is antipathy, and if there is one thing Jon is firmly good at it is feeling things, deeply.

Helen, I think, is the real firestarter to the pinnacle of this part of Jon's development, that culminates in all that Sasha was. When he was a child, a monster snatched away a life right before his eyes, one he can't help but feel like should have been his own.

And when he was an adult, two monsters did the same to two women he felt a connection to--though he didn't realise the first one had happened til much, much later.

S2 had me riding a highwire of tension. I've mentioned in my liveblog posts that what happened to Sasha struck at a personal, deep-seated and fairly irrational fear of mine, so I was waiting, the entire season, for something to happen with Not!Sasha. Hearing Jon later muse that his paranoia was aggravated and worsened by the presence of Not!Sasha was honestly highly validating, because it was doing that to me, too.

so! you want to rip a fic from fanfiction dot net?

I’m sure at this point we’ve all seen the posts about FFN’s inevitable demise. Not to downplay how much that would suck, for all we riff on FFN--but people have been saying that for literal years at this point, and while I do not doubt that FFN is dying, it’s probably not going to up and vanish on us in the next week. It’s got some good time of chugging and wheezing along left yet.

But among the panic there are people asking sincere questions about what can be done to save fics from FFN in the case of the site going down and taking literal decades of fandom history with it, and I’m seeing a surprising amount of people saying that the only way to do it is to either screenshot the fics or type them out yourself because copy/paste does not work on FFN. And that is just blatantly not true. There are many ways in which you can save fics from FFN. Here are just a few:

You can copy/paste directly from the mobile site. This is probably one of the easiest methods for anyone to do. Just click on the URL of the chapter you’re reading, and change the www. to m. Hit enter and the page will reload in mobile mode. You can now copy/paste the chapter right into a word document. You will have to go chapter by chapter.

CTRL+S. Go to the fic you want to save, and hit ctrl+s. Save the damn webpage. This will keep it in the exact format of the webpage, which you could see as a pro or a con, but it will also keep the ads, which does suck. You’ll also have to go chapter by chapter with this method but it does go a lot faster than manually copy/pasting the text.

HTML to PDF. This method I’m admittedly a little less sure about, since when I used it it was like, 2013 and I was in highschool so I’m not sure how viable it still is, but--just a quick google search should find you a website that will let you save a webpage as a PDF file. I have folders and folders of fics I saved back in highschool using this method. It will again have to go chapter by chapter and just like saving the webpage will keep the format of the site intact--down to keeping the ads.

Use a fanfiction downloader. Two I’ve been using for years are FF2eBook and FicHub. You put in the link of the fic you want to download and it converts the entire thing into a file for you. Yes, the entire thing--you don’t need to manually go through chapter by chapter. By default, both sites download in epub format, though FicHub does have a few other options. I’ve never really experimented with them though because I’m personally fine with epub, and there are a million epub to pdf (or other file type) converters out there.

And there you go: a handful of ways for you to save your favourite fics before FFN goes under. Again, I don’t think it’s something to be too worried about, but the best time to do your part for fandom preservation was yesterday. The second best time is to get started right now. There is no reason to wait for FFN to be on its death bed to start saving fics. I’ve been doing this for years just so I have fics to read offline.

I’m a little too young to have been around for livejournal, but I was one of those weirdos that posted their first fics on quizilla. I remember when quizilla just...changed. And so much was lost. Looking back, almost none of what was posted on quizilla was actually good, but it was still something that someone put time and effort and passion into creating, and it was important.

There is almost no way that when FFN inevitably goes down that its entire archive will be saved. But we can do our best to save as much as we can. Stop panicking and start saving.
