My Great Big List of Gray-Market American Girl Goodies!

If you're trying to build your American Girl doll's collection of clothes and accessories, and if you're also intimidated by the high prices of secondhand stuff, this post is for you! I've compiled here a list of things for sale from the gray market.

What "gray market" means is that some factories in China that previously made products for American Girl brand, continue making them for a while after American Girl stops ordering them. The factory workers then sell these things on eBay, at a huge discount.

I've bought gray market stuff before, and I've seen no difference in the quality or similarity to the stuff I've gotten from AG. It does take a little longer to arrive from China, but I've not yet had anything lost in the mail. So keep that in mind that there is a small risk of not receiving anything.

Items also come and go in availability. So something could be available for a few weeks and then stop production, and you've lost your chance to buy it, so definitely don't delay too long if you find something you like.

This is by no means a complete list. What I do recommend doing, if you're looking for something specific, is to go to the seller's profile and see what other American Girl products they're selling. There's a lot more out there than what I tracked down.

The 9,000 Dollar Joss Sale

Buckle up folks because this is the strangest American girl listing I’ve ever seen.

See this Joss? She’s cute, she’s in good condition, she’s got a hair salon style in. But she’s nothing special, and you’d think typically a doll like that would fetch, I don’t know, 90 dollars? She’s got her accessories and a carrying case.

But you’d be wrong.

That Joss sold for nine thousand dollars.

Yes, she’s haunted, it seems. There’s a full story in the comments of the listing, but I picked out the highlights.

The seller got this Joss from a guy they deal with frequently, and he was the one who told them it was haunted- and that people might pay a few grand for a haunted doll. So the seller listed it for 9,000.

I first saw it before the story was updated with communication via a paranormal investigation device, and those pictures are now included with the listing.

Apparently this Joss has a lot to say, and that is worth 9k to someone, somewhere.

I made a joking offer of 30 bucks, thinking that the 9k was a placeholder price of some kind, and the seller instantly declined. But Ebay saw I was interested, so they sent me one of those classic Ebay “sucks to be you, the item you liked is GONE!” emails. And my jaw dropped.

At least they had the courtesy to offer free shipping.

There are two going theories, imo. Either the haunted doll market is insane, and someone wanted a haunted (but not malicious) doll that badly (they didn’t even make an offer for 8k?? I would have)... or they’re laundering money.

Call me crazy, but I don’t think this is legitimate. I skimmed haunted doll listings and most of the time, it looks like “haunted doll” sells at or slightly above the regular price of the dolls. Not many American Girl dolls are listed as haunted, usually old porcelain dolls that have a slightly creepy vibe to them.

Either somebody wants a visually pleasing haunted doll, and 9k is chump change to them, or, well, maybe someone made about 10k or so in a shady business (not talking drugs here, I’m talking a weird MLM or an under the table job) and needed to process their money through a taxable revenue stream. IRS auditors are going to be more willing to accept “people love haunted shit” than “I just found 10k on the ground”.

I’d say I’m 60/40 on a strange wealthy collector spending 9k on this doll or tax fraud being funneled through a Joss, and I don’t know which one is stranger.

The series follows the story of Ms. Charlie Morningstar, the princess of Hell, and her efforts to rehabilitate demons through a hotel that offers them a chance at redemption in Pentagram City. The aforesaid TV show explores themes of redemption, personal growth and the complexities of the afterlife, and has garnered attention for its unique animation style and dark humor.

According to the United States Public Industry Catalog (USPIC), Hazbin Hotel will consist of 8 episodes entitled "Overture", "Radio Killed the Video Star", "Scrambled Eggs", "Masquerade", "Dad Beat Dad", "Welcome to Heaven", "Hello Rosie" and "The Show Must Go On".

The series is expected to air on FX (FOX Extended TV) or any FOX-related cable channels in the near future, followed by availability on-demand the day after airing in America (with the examples between YouTube Premium and/or Hulu). Speaking in which, I’d going through my own Inktober artworks that I’ve managed to almost completion. I only have 19 of them so far til 12 more to go. Considered myself lucky I’ve started from past months ago this year.

Just not all of them yet and I haven’t writing through my list; even if I would like to. Though it’ll be “not so scary” kind from my previous Inktober drawings, but hoping it’ll be interesting for my OCs. As long when getting through some other tasks as well.

Also, I’m almost there to finished my birthday artwork for our special 🐶 blue canine speedster.

EVENT OF THE MONTH:

🤘The legendary Bikini Kill first parted ways in 1997, but their hot ticket reunion tour has been blowing fans old and new away since 2019. After a pandemic pause from touring, their eagerly-awaited Montréal show at MTelus takes place at long last on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.
