Legit saw someone call Coriolanus a sociopath.

Like, what?

Does your definition even remotely resemble the actual one?

I know it’s uncomfortable, sometimes, to analyze the antagonist and realize you have anything in common, but that’s no excuse to go around slapping labels on them.

He tried to avoid war.

Because he wanted to keep his power, yes, but also because he’d seen what war did to people.

This is a man who experienced some of the worst of humanity, at a very young age. Events which shaped him. People manipulating him, grooming him, to continue to uphold the system and the distance between District and Capitol. A man who felt the weight of continuing his family’s name (literally and figuratively) when he was a boy.

He was not born who he was when we first met him. He was molded into that person by circumstance and company.

If you pay attention, Coriolanus does care for people besides himself. (Granted one is his flesh and blood, but still) He’s not antisocial. Simply accustomed to being surrounded by a certain kind of people. He’s not amoral. He sympathized with Sejanus for a time. Not strictly disagreeing with his objections to the Games. Merely the way he went about it. Rather than having public outbursts and going rogue, biding his time. Quietly garnering support. Allies. Inherit his family’s wealth. Gain the finances and the power to implement lasting change. But Sejanus had no patience and couldn’t see that his impatience was only working against his intentions.

Though it didn’t make theatrical release, we can see Coriolanus is trying to keep the carnage to a minimum. “We agree a war could end humanity. Keep saying that.” Pair that with how he went about things. He first tried to have Katniss and Peeta calm the uprising. He didn’t want to kill anybody if he didn’t have to do so. As he says, he’s not wasteful. When that didn’t work, he THEN decided she had to be eliminated. Which culminated in the 3rd Quarter Quell. Where he hoped she would destroy her own public image before she died. That didn’t happen. 13 got Katniss to use as they pleased, so he took the opportunity to do the same with Peeta. Peeta, who had much more confidence in public speaking and a better stage presence. Someone with more impulse control. When Peeta went rogue, he could no longer use him for television. Still not wanting to kill anyone unnecessarily, Peeta wasn’t killed. He was turned into a weapon to kill the face of the rebellion. Then that didn’t work.

He admitted himself he was too focused on Katniss and Coin counted on that. He admitted he’d been bested. Rather than let Katniss “fuck around and find out,” he told her exactly what would happen. Though in denial, she did believe him. She knew he was right. She just couldn’t accept that her personally perceived enemy was not her only enemy. That she had been working with someone who she saw as equally bad. Someone who had been responsible for the death of her sister.

When you stop viewing antagonists as two dimensional “oh they’re the bad guy and they can’t possibly have a good reason for anything they’ve done,” and start realizing they are three dimensional (if written well) characters. People with experiences. Feelings. Thoughts. People whose motivations might not be as inhumane as you think. What he does isn’t any less wrong if he has a good reason. I’m not trying to excuse anything. I want you to be able to understand the point of the series. That anybody, given the right circumstances, can become Coriolanus. Or Coin. Or Dr. Gaul.

Dr. Gaul even makes a point of making that quite clear.

Hunger Games is a warning. A cautionary tale. A reminder that we must be careful, or we can become that which we fear.

Not just as individuals, but as a collective society.

We can slap a label on anybody. “Evil” “Sociopath” “Psychopath”

But those labels keep us from thinking critically. It’s important to discuss the how and why of things. When we label something simply as one of these words, we are giving ourselves reason not to do so. And because we don’t want to do that work. We don’t want to be confronted by the harsh realities of humanity, nature/nurture, etc. We will slap a label on anyone and anything any opportunity we get so we can remain in our comfortable bubble. Feeling unburdened by the responsibility each of us has to make and maintain a world where everyone has what they need and want for nothing.

While our elders aren’t always reliable examples (*cough* RNC *cough*), some of them are not only reliable, but good. Trustworthy. Filled with wisdom.

Donald Sutherland knows a thing or two because he’s seen a thing or two. It is not difficult to find the man discussing Coriolanus’ motivations and thought processes. He makes no attempt to paint the things Coriolanus has done in a better light. Only to explain how and why he arrived at the decision to do the things he does. Donald understands The Hunger Games the very way in which we all should understand it.

Yes, I practically worship the ground the man walks on. I admit that. However, I am not without reason.

Before you get the wrong impression, I have no delusions of him being any kind of messiah. He is just a man. A kind, funny, and intelligent man, but a man nonetheless. One of many people whose wisdom goes largely ignored and unheeded.

A Beautiful Understanding: Envision a Rose Forthcoming

There are many things that Honkai Star Rail has surprised me with, especially within its sidequests. Ones with silly twists, neat ideas and just simply good execution. With my issues with Penacony's main story though, there was certainly one element that I hadn't been prepared to see amongst it all. Spoilers ahead for the sidequest: Envision a Rose Forthcoming

I was tempted to screen grab essentially this entire final conversation but I only grabbed two. This first one probably resonates with many of you though. It is something anyone with depression has had to face, especially in their darkest hours. During those times when it is so loud that it feels all consuming. Like there is only it.

Worse yet, Cocona talks of compromises she's made with the voice. Parts of herself she corrupted or cut off in order to appease it. To try and mold herself into what could be happy and to lose that which causes her pain. To appease others but especially to appease this voice that will not stop.

Until the voice was all there was.

I characterize in my own works the idea that when someone goes to that darkest place, there isn't really thought. Nothing can penetrate the void that's consuming you as the misery is all that faces you back. Personifying it as a voice that cuts all else out, that has you entirely in its grip, is a great other way to put it though. When your thoughts tell you that yes, cutting the nose to spite the face is exactly what will help, even if both are a part of you.

But.

It is not wholly cold, nor is your intervention a miracle that cures her. To get this, you have to stay with her. Refuse to let her disappear, even as she asks you to allow it. Make sure she knows SOMEONE cares. Someone is refuting the voice that seems to be her entire reality. You are there for her and that's what matters. Admittedly, you do it by grabbing her hand and not letting go and I'd prefer it to be that it's that you simply won't leave but that's really my only complaint with the sequence.

Otherwise, I think it's just an incredible depiction of someone at the brink. The rest of the quest does a good job depicting her depression as well. You literally have to fight and destroy her ego as she wants to stop having desires and caring about her dreams so that it's easier to forget the pain but things only get worse for it. You see her outside of her mindscape struggling to even pretend to be happy and people talk about how despite the fact that she has a good job is well respected, she is still miserable for no reason. The fact that a doctor who just wants to literally cleanse her of the emotion of sadness says this makes me want to punch them in the face and it frankly sold me on The Family being corrupt and crooked more than literally anything in the main plot since this is what they believe to be a good 'doctor'. You can see the struggle though and do you know what happens when you give Cocona the medicine?

She refuses to take it. She performatively does but she has her memories and emotions back and doesn't want the numb. Doesn't want something that only makes the pain tolerable. As someone who has to look at his own medication, after so many failed and even now still trying even old ones to see if they'll do something now... A common fear for many is that the meds will make them lose who they are. That they deaden life and I'm happy that the game didn't depict that as a positive. That cutting those things off isn't how you get better.

It's just a shockingly respectful depiction of depression, even to the point of wishing for it to end, and that's kind of the last thing I actually expected to see in Star Rail. Even larger games that are trying to be deep and contemplative with their main stories on these subjects can end up shooting themselves in the foot. Try to act like there is just a cure or that it can be fixed all too easily. To treat it like a disease that just needs the right medication.

And admittedly, to give this sidequest a happy ending, they have her find joy in life again through a passion she'd been forced to put down. As someone who is happiest when they're able to write though... Embracing the bright side of yourself, and finding those clouds parted enough to allow you to do so, can genuinely do wonders for someone. As far as ways to wrap this up, in a SIDEQUEST, it's very good and well setup as the way she may escape her dark days, at least in a way we can believe will stick.

It's a good reminder for me of why I still want to stick with this game. I don't consider a good portion of Penacony's main story content to be sincere. Its sincere elements are to some extent twisted for insincere uses and it sours my favorite parts of the content. That isn't how Star Rail always is though. When it just wants to tell a good story with good, heartfelt characters, it knocks it out of the park with shocking regularity.

It's why Belobog will continue to be my favorite world and I'll keep waiting for the next time they believe such a simple tale can be strong enough to lead us somewhere new. That it can be hold the audience at the brink, without feeling the need to let them go just for the shock of it.

Not when it itself knows better than to glorify such a fall.

being a steve stan is hard 😔 i dabble in multiple steve ships and the fan favorite is ALWAYS the other half of the ship :(((

Literally 😭 It's like Steve is always doomed to be the prop character. I mean, I can't speak for more niche Steve ships, but I ult Stony and I've read Stucky when I run out of Stony fics. And it's so obvious when people either don't care about Steve's character or give him a playdough personality (that means they don't give Steve consistency with his canon characterization and instead mold him into whatever they need for the plot).

I know it shouldn't because its fanfiction, but it drives me insane. Like off my damn rocker insane 🥴. And I know why this happens but I'm not sure if I want to get into it....but if you wanna know, I'll try to articulate my "theory".

(I get a little off topic here lol) Anyways, yeah, it's not exactly fun having to sort through a thousand awful Steve portrayals to find content, but it's worth it, I think. Most of my favorite Steve authors stopped writing around 2016-2018 but there's a couple around. I actually really want to write fanfiction. I mean, I have things outlined, but I realize I make zero progress because 1) My writing is not up to standard and 2) I'm the type that needs to ramble about my ideas to give them form and I don't really have an outlet to do that yet. Woes of being new to a fandom 😵 Technically I can just do that here unprompted, but I'm shy believe it or not.

Back to point, being a Steve stan isn't for the weak lol. I don't want to go full pity party, but it's true! I wish there was more pro-steve content, but I'll live. There's still a lot to go around, but you gotta out in work to find it tbh.

I have been saving this one up until my brain was fully at its best to ramble. My brain isn’t at its best, it’s at 50% so that’s good enough lmao.

Throwing my thoughts under the cut because it’s just me talking out my ass about my oc lol

As I draw closer to finish Sorina’s story I’ve been thinking more and more about him lately and how to start it all out - he is going to make an appearance her story as is, so his first office intro to what I’m writing will be there and helping her/Wesker with some sneaky shit. But I’m really considering starting his story at his last day of training on Rockfort Island, to which it would flash forward to where he’s at in Raccoon City and how he’s changed since being thrown into Umbrella’s personal island of hell lol.

ANY WAY ALL OF THAT TO SAY - I’m considering writing his whole thing in a way of him being at war with himself over the job, the state of his life, of the things he serves and how being a literal agent of death has taken its toll. He doesn’t hate it per-say, but it’s almost like he’s going through a midlife crisis and he’s still trying to carve out this place for himself and the sensitive sides of himself within the mess of everything. Which is funny because Hunk is the exact opposite of that - he’s more machine than man at that point and it quite literally drives Ricardo mad because he’s trying to understand how the man has become that, until the have a fateful night together and Ricardo bites more than he can chew, so to speak.

WHEN WE GET TO RE8 THOUGH - that’s going to be interesting because all of that is taking place in Matilda’s story. I’m starting out the first chapter of that with him and Hunk trampling through the snow and being held up at gun point by Matilda until a lycan attacks. At this point he’s much more sure of himself and what he needs to do, why he’s there, etc. and essentially becomes a mentor to Matilda with their new way of necromancy life and trying to help them hone that in his attempt to stop the impending apocalypse.

I really want to write a scene with him and Lady Dimitescu because I think it would be quite hilarious having his ass in her castle with Matilda. I also just think it would be funny if those two came to an agreement and he’d help lady D and the daughters by luring terrible men to their demise lmao.

I also can’t wait to write him along with Heisenberg as well, because Heisenberg is very protective of Mat (especially since he’s already saved their ass once), and know that Heisenbergs attitude can get a little fiery - it will be interesting seeing how Ricardo deescalates that and tries to get him to realize that he and Hunk are on their side.

Other facts - Ricardo is the only one who isn’t infected with mold in someway, which will come into play with the other OCs and plot when I get them all in the village. He kind of becomes the only one with a clear head *hint hint*

I’m just like really excited to write him as an older man because I can see him really leaning into his personality, which is kind and funny, but also tired of the bullshit going on and not afraid to say so lmao

Okay so, after Phil reveals he knows Wilbur and Tommy are sirens, he starts mining for information. And Wilbur doesn’t see the point in hiding it. Which is also a smart move since hiding more/still being stubborn about hiding info would make Phil suspicious that he’s still hiding more. While right now Phil has no reason to assume he’s hiding more, let alone being able to use the Voice.

It also gives us some nice exposition. And this is the second time I read things is partially already know because of asks before realising it’s completely new info in the fic. It really nice to see how you apply this info often it’s the explanation for things we’ve already known or seen. Like the twilight sky and the windy season being explained by a lack of rotation (I forgot the name for it) or Eldingver’s general hate for Wilbur, which we already know, is explained by the fact that the king didn’t like him and even after his passing that sentiment stayed. And then there’s the constant question of how did Wilbur end up in his position and why is he a bastard which has followed us the entire fic.

We also get a lot more insight into how Phil thinks. Wilbur is interesting to him. Because he’s a bastard who has gotten shit for it his entire life, yet he’s still not used to it/affected by those insults even though he knows to hild his tongue. Phil sees potential in him, but if he wants to use that potential he needs to be able to mold Wilbur. Which is what he’s doing here, or trying to do, or maybe just test how easily he can be molded, manipulated and shaped into what Phil wants him to be.

He’s calling Wilbur out because he wants him to get over it. He’s pushing buttons until he gets a reaction, then keeps pushing that button until he stops getting one. Meanwhile, he’s constantly providing Wilbur with challenges so he’ll rise up to them. Wilbur’s smart, Phil says as much, so he just keeps giving him these little nudges to make him fix himself. He’s giving Wilbur advice to get him to where he wants him to be (or thinks Wilbur wants to be).

Part of me also wonders if Phil has caught onto the get pity strategy (because it looks like it's working in the secret meeting last chapter) and is trying to counter it by pushing Wilbur’s buttons until he abandons it for his own gain (aka be g petty and proving a point). yessss I love when I can finally explain an exposition thing that's already been mentioned a bunch of times in the story, though it's definitely confusing a bit when I remember explaining stuff to you or others in asks but then being like wait i never put that in the actual fic tho oops-

you're slowly gonna get more and more context as times goes on! I love blending exposition into plot instead of just dumping exposition all in the beginning. it's slow reveals of more background as the subjects come up that allows you to understand the world better and better. it's a really fun balance to strike :)

literally phil's entire thing right now is that he's extremely interested by wilbur for many reasons. he understands that tommy is the crown prince, but wilbur is the one who has made all the major decisions. he's the ridiculed bastard, he's the leader of the duo, he's the trained advisor, he's cunning, he's intelligent, he's petty, he's childish—phil wants to understand how his brain works and what makes him tick. and what better way to learn how something works than by playing with it? I keep seeing comments where people think we're getting a dadza adoption arc but like, while i'm not saying there's no parental feelings at all, that's really not where phil's head is at, especially not right now. stars!phil is a different characterization to how i normally write phil and i'm having a lot of fun with it. his motivations towards the way he treats wilbur aren't necessarily kind and parental, it's a game to him more than anything.

Hi same anon as before. Would you ever want to talk a little bit about fanfiction and yugioh or whatever? Maybe give me some advice on how to start writing again when you’re stuck hehe. I’ve been stuck for nearly a whole year

YES ABSOLUTELY I WOULD!! I looooove talking about writing and yugioh :] two of my favorite things!

Also, as for some advice, here's what I can try to offer you:

When I get stuck, I move on to something else. If it's writing, I usually like to scroll through my old docs and find something that inspires me! Like an old idea I forgot about or a scene I forgot I wrote... Something that sparks my interest in that moment! And what I do is just... write? Writing for yourself I think is the most important step in getting back into things. You have to try to remind yourself why you started doing it in the first place and the only way to do that is to WANT to write whatever it is you're writing! So, if you're stuck on a project that you've been wanting to finish, the best thing to do is set it aside and write literally whatever the hell you want. Something that is exciting and fun and makes your brain feel alive again :]

After you get yourself back into it, finding a friend or two to share your work with is helpful :) So, instead of writing for, say, an AO3 audience, you have a smaller audience of supportive friends to read it over and tell you what they think :D I've been sharing docs (stories I will probably never post) with a couple of people this past year and I take great delight in just... sharing :) It's good to forget all about publishing and posting and sharing with a wider audience when you're stuck. You don't need to add that extra pressure on to yourself! Just HAVE FUN!!!

I think all of the above is good advice for when you're stuck on a specific project, but if you're stuck on writing as a whole and just can't seem to get back into it then I suggest two things:

One: Don't worry about it!! Get out and do something fun for yourself. Don't hunt too hard for inspiration. Instead, let it come to you! Write down thoughts you have throughout the day in a notebook or your phone (I actually do this with drawing in my sketchbook hehe its helpful!) that you can look at later. It can, and should, be literally anything:

"Saw an orange cat"; "The sky is purple looking"; "My shoelace is fucked up"

Then maybe challenge yourself to make something out of them? Or don't! It's just for exercising the idea making in your brain little by little :]

Two: **Read works you love! Read books, fics, poems, short stories, plays... whatever it is that you like and love to consume :] These are things that are sure to inspire you subconsciously! Maybe you could even analyze these works and ask yourself why you like these things. What makes the story unique? What draws you to it? Then you could take those things and try to mold it into something of your own :]

For example, what inspired me to write Cornered was The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. It had been, like, 3 years since I read that book for high school, but one day I thought about the way Faulkner utilized stream of consciousness and point of view and I just was like "hey... what if I tried doing something a little like that..." And that was literally it. I had no plot ideas. I just put that thought on the back-burner and when the story finally did come to me, I put the two ideas together. Because I thought it would be epic. And because I love creative writing and I love investigators and I love yugioh and I love to make Ryou suffer :]

**I feel like I should add not to OVER analyze works you love. It's easy to feel discouraged when you start comparing yourself to others. Don't do that, like, ever! Use things you love for inspiration, never for comparison. If you find yourself feeling discouraged because "oh, I could never write like that" STOP IMMEDIATELY and do something else! Because you CAN!!! No one will ever write the way you do :] You are unique with your own thoughts and ideas! If you find yourself saying things like this, try finding inspiration outside of writing. Just so you don't fall into that hole!

Ah.... I think that's all I have, haha. I'm by no means a professional. I just really like writing fanfiction LOL Most of this advice is coming from my experience as an animation major and dealing with burnout and stuff like that. Everyone is different, though, so finding what works for you is going to be a bit of a challenge, but hopefully these are some tips that can help you get started on facing your writing rut head on!

BAYDEN WARDEYN.

BINGO!

Celest finally figured out something right on the money. The blonde Barbie bombshell stereotype that his sister fit the mold of down to the gossipy tea was out. Society was sick of it except for old men and womanizers and so was Bayden. The problem with his sister was she took it to a higher level than just being a self absorbed bitch. She had the power and psycho-lady-balls to back up any mean girl threat she spit. So, Hell no he wasn’t attracted to anything that closely resembled his otherwise very blonde family, even his mother, his relatives. Blonde all.

He was literally the black sheep with the wrong hair, the wrong everything. The joke of being the Fed Ex kid because he must have been a drop off since he didn’t fit in with their family got tiresome growing up. It hurt more now knowing why he was really part of the family. He wished he was the Fed Ex kid. At least then he’d know he was always wanted.

Next, she started spouting off about not knowing what she looked like, something about a couple months ago. This confused Bayden since he still didn’t understand how her powers worked. That’s what he’d wanted to talk about in the first place. He wanted to have a real conversation with her, but stupid shit always gets in the way. Then again he’d have chosen missing the conversation to her throw couches around in the community room any day. That was exciting. Life was boring in Briarcliff. Excuse him for finding any and every patients’ tantrums the best part of living there. It was the best form of entertainment he had. So, of course he liked to poke and prod people after all these years. What else did he have to do?

“No. We can’t. We can’t stop talking about Rowan now. That’s the whole damn point. You’re supposed to talk to me Celestis. I am trying to be your friend and I can’t fucking be that you dumbass if you don’t explain this shit to me on the real.”

Then she went jabbing at his zodiac as a way to degrade him. Libras were an air sign. He knew that. He knew more about it than he let on as a self proclaimed skeptic. He had witches in the family, so of course he did.

“Clever one Celesty-cakes. But, you know who’s a Libra? John Lennon. So, yeah, you can throw all your higher than thou shade at me just like Monty all you want because I’m a Lennon. But, You know I’m a dreamer and that’s all I’m gonna be because I’m mother fucking stuck in here on a life sentence until the day I die. So thank GOD I’m a Lennon because what’s up in my head, my mother fucking, retarded, hot head is all I’ve got. Briarcliff till death do us part.”

Then he turned up a middle finger at her with slow twist of his wrist.

Till death do us part indeed. He looked around at all the grave stones. Even his own family plot was connected to this land. So, even if his mother had a special spot for him at home he wasn’t going far. His boyhood home was right there on the hill overlooking all of this. Maybe he’d get lucky and be cremated and have his ashes scattered in the wind. That’s the only way he saw himself getting very far. But, if he knew his mother at all she’d keep him in an urn, and hold him tight, never let him go. Maybe she’d get drunk and spill them. She’d have to vacuum him up and put part of him in the garbage.

His head was drifting off to morbid visions like this while he watched Celestis pick flowers. Watching her calm herself down was somehow calming for him too. Everything got quiet between them for a moment. When her trap wasn’t flapping it was funny how innocent she looked. Rowan’s body. He started to think more about what she’d said earlier about the Instagram. Bayden had been under the impression both Rowan and Celestis were in there. He’d only been told so much. As he was really thinking this through she asked where to go next. This implied together. She was done running it seemed. Damn, those flowers had some kind of special juju to calm her down like that. Bayden was going to remember that. He’d steal them off this bush till it was bloom-less if it got her to calm her little freckle faced booty down on the daily and actually look semi-approachable. Not that being unapproachable ever stopped him before, but it was nice to hear a civil tone every once in awhile.

“Let’s just take a walk and think.” He didn’t want to go back where people were.

He was really thankful his mom still let him wear his street clothes. He’d have gone bizerk all over Briarcliff if they’d have put him back in a gown or those scrub-like patient uniforms they all wear when they don’t have real clothes, or are first admitted. He thought about things like that. He knew this was still better than prison. He was walking around freely outside right now even if it was inside Briarcliff’s gates. He couldn’t have a breath of fresh air moment at his leisure to talk to someone privately in prison. He tried to look at the positives. Even when he got low sometimes he could still find the light inside his dark mind.

“Okay, so let’s run this down for me. Instagrams. I didn’t think we were allowed to have those. I know I’m not, but I’m in here for a different reason than you, criminal charges. Not everyone is. Well, I mean unless I got someone else to run it for me. I’m just not allowed. But, anyway…. So, if Rowan has one you’re telling me she’s on the outside in your body, right? Am I getting this right?”

“Will you show me you? I mean I get it’s not you in the pictures. It’s her then, in your body. You’re in her body. Okay. I gathered you’re not blonde by what you said and you don’t like Rowan’s taste. The tattoo comment was funny and you have no idea how hard it was for me not to laugh. But, I get it. I’d be pissed if someone was out there tattooing their shit on my body. Is she doing that or something? But like… So, has it always been you? I think I was confused when you first told me. We didn’t exactly go into detail. So, I’ve never met Rowan? I thought for a minute maybe your different moods were me actually talking to two different people in you. Do you switch back and forth at all?”

Then the big don’t touch me it’s dangerous thing he was putting all together now that the big emotional responses were out of the way.

“And you didn’t want me to touch you, why? Is that why? Are you saying you jump around in different people when you touch them? Is that your power and you haven’t got any control over it? Am I close at all at understanding this? I just want to understand and please don’t use any metaphors while explaining. Just tell me simple and straight up. Just because I watch a lot of Disney movies doesn’t mean I’m stupid. I might not have powers, but I’m from a family of witches serving a life sentence in a mental institution for being a serial killer. I’m not five. I’ll get it. Don’t over complicate this. We’ve known each other for years now and you’re one of the few things left my doctors say is real. Sometimes I wish you were just another delusion, believe me. But please, let me have a friend in here. You’re kind of all I’ve got.”

If Celestis ever stopped talking to him he’d be right back with Nurse Janet as his go-to gal, the closest thing to nice besides Clarissa in the whole place, and she didn’t count. She was just a kid. At least he had someone to watch Disney movies with.

“FINE! I see your point there Bayden. Only I need you to tone yourself down a little about the parts you like about Rowan right now.” She didn’t want to keep hearing it. It was like his voice kept playing in Celestis head && with each repetition, she felt more annoyed. She didn’t think she needed to insist on how she despised Rowan in every way.

Celestis noticed things escalated quickly, as if the both of them were somehow not connecting. It happens. They were just off. They had there ups && downs though he brought it farther down then she’d like it to be. The commentary got a little to dark for her own liking as a frown was etched on her face. Thinking he was ‘so-weird’ when he called her Celesty-cakes.

“No one said you were retarded Bayden.” She said in an exasperated sigh.

“That’s the very last thing you are. After all, I wouldn’t have thought much of those claw marks if you didn’t say something.” Yet he proved her wrong it wasn’t mountain lions.

It was her fault for not taking it more seriously then she should have. If she had been more aware, maybe things wouldn’t have gone the direction they had. Bayden wouldn’t be in the trouble he was in, as much as the trouble she was in now. It’s a step back, a very big step back, but she can’t change what’s already happened. Her eyes rolled to the left, after the middle finger gesture. It seemed to be a SENSATIVE s u b j e c t.

As once again, Monty was in the narrative. Celestis’s stomach did an uneasy flip. Cleary there was something going on, && she wondered if Monty had some sort of Beetlejuice effect — precognition. The whole picking up on things before they happen type. It wouldn’t surprise her in the slightest if she did. One thing Celestis has observed about his sister she had a way of knowing things, but she was undeniably dumb as a domesticated turkey.

Celestis couldn’t quite understand it, but even domesticated turkey’s can learn new tricks. Even Monty has abilities that she didn’t know about yet.

Picking gardenia after gardenia until she couldn’t hold anymore. Wrapped in the silence between them for a moment. She didn’t really mind the silence — it gave her a chance to think. She kept reliving bits && parts of there conversation, over && over in her head. It hurt to think about, like biting down on a broken tooth, but she couldn’t stop doing it.

She closed her eyes for a moment, bringing the gardenia’s to her face && she took a hell of a long inhale before her steps fell side by side against Bayden’s. Walk && think. It was two words that never sounded good together. If there was one thing Celestis didn’t mind was the scrub-like patient uniforms. Unlike Bayden, she always just painted && drawled on everything she never liked anyway. With her old shoes being taken to do blood testing. Celestis was given new one’s to compensate as they were very, very white right now but they won’t be for long. As she wasn’t a very big fan of hospital gowns. As unlike Bayden she lived off of lost && found hoodies that are always one size bigger then her ( with paint && sharpie designs ), swapped price tags at thrift stores ( when she has the money ), as she’s all sporty-type with the yoga pants with a touch of her own talents to make them stand out. It’s not like she had ANYTHING e l s e.

It’s been like that for so long even if she came into money she wouldn’t change her ways. && Briarcliff was far from short from art supplies to tone her art down.

“Instagram.” Celestis interrupted Bayden in a bland tone. “Do I look like I’d spend my time taking PHOTO’S of m y s e l f && blast it off to dumbass strangers approvals?”

Scoffing a little “I made a fake profile Bayden && you could too. It’s not hard at all. Mine’s just full of copied photos from google that some idiot took, dumb quotes, && girly artwork I’m not too proud of but I do those things knowing Rowan would like it && accept the request since it was on private! If she knew it was me she would have never accepted.”

Raising an eyebrow. That was a strange way of putting it as he’s the kid with a smartphone as he could have one, if he really wanted one. As she knew social media posts result in criminal charges && other offenses but that’s a first. Stopping in her tracks for a second. Shocked, she came to an abrupt stop. Criminal Charges? It felt like she hadn’t caught her breath, as it felt like a bolt of lightning shot down && just slammed into her chest as she didn’t know what to make of that. Catching back up to Bayden’s as she listened && heard everything. Only Bayden rambled. Trying to organize what to say, in an order.

“I’M in Rowan’s body && Rowan is in m i n e.”

Celestis looked confused, then shrugged. “I don’t know why you’d want me too but yea if that’s what you want. Sure.” She didn’t understand the appeal of why he’d want too see what she looked like when she gave him a perfect description of what he’ll see. Looking upwards holding in a yawn as she didn’t find the conversation tiring. No. It was more the way her body felt, as the dark circles under her eyes showed her tiredness naturally.

“Not a natural born blond anyway.” Hair could be dyed on the whims of Rowan as she didn’t know what Rowan really does as she was out in the real world. It’s been about two months now since she’s checked, && probably won’t be able to check anytime soon. Unless she used his smartphone. While she’d never do it here in Briarcliff, as she usually goes to the Library. Why she hasn’t checked it in a long while but his smartphone was different then a Briarcliff computer.

“I don’t like that she tries to hard to be CUTE. She’s n o t. You’ll understand my point later.” When Bayden see’s it, he’ll see that she’s some OFF-b r a n d instagram try-hard. Someone who. . . just. . likes to take pre-planned photo’s? He’ll understand it when he see’s it! It won’t be hard to understand it visually.

An uneasy familiarity of memories flashed in her mind when they were kids as she tried to push them back. Her air ways felt they were getting all tangled up inside herself making it a little hard to breath. Or as if her airways had been a rubber band stretched beyond it’s limits. “Rowan doesn’t like pain.” Not that anyone could say PAIN was everyone’s form of f u n.

“I guess I don’t know what to think. From what I can tell, she goes through a lot of boyfriends. She doesn’t want to be alone, but she has issues. So she doesn’t stay with one person to long. I know she likes to do this thing. Write there names in sharpie or henna on the side of her wrist as you’ll see name’s change throughout her photo’s on insta. If she built up the courage I mean there’s a possibility of tattoo’s && names.” Annoying but she rather be in her own body even if she had super girly / ex-lovers names she’s never met tattooed all over herself.

“No. You’ve never met her Bayden. It’s not really are personalities.” Her features shifted into something oddly strange Is that what he thought this whole time? “No Bayden. I don’t have multiple personality's. That’s what they want to concluded was medically wrong but it’s more delusional. Why a Witch is in an Asylum in the first place.” She at first thought it was strange he thought that, however living in Briarcliff that made some sense.

“Well I didn’t exactly want to say anything with the possibility of anyone overhearing. I’m a very guarded person with many reasons why.” No lie there. She didn’t need anyone else finding out she’s a witch. It made things even more complicated then it should. It caused other problems. Oh did she forget?! She’s in a fucking Asylum!!!

“The brief version: It was hard to tell which one of us did it when we were younger. We both were different — Witch wouldn’t have been the first thought that came to mind. We didn’t know what we were. We...were just kids."

“We didn’t figure it out. That it was me. That I had done it until it was too late. Being separated I couldn’t swap us back.” If there is one thing Celestis remembers, but can’t recall who came up with it first was that they thought they were aliens as kids. This was not a Stranger Things storyline, even though Stranger Things isn't even about Aliens. They were kids, && way to young to understand anything. Keeping that part locked as she couldn't believe she remembered. She wished she didn’t remember because it only made things worse in the long run.

As she felt like she forgot something && then it hit her. “Yes so don’t touch me! I’ve done it only once without touching someone, why I found out it was me in the first place, but as long as my guard’s up it’s fine."

"Unless I’m on the right dosage of Xanax but of course life’s a BITCH. If it was a s l u t it would be easy.” Life s a slutty bitch. She had been at one point happily balanced, not that she used it all the time, it was just a good safety net. As it was a choice to either stay on her guard but suffer, or take a Xanax but suffer. Either she has her clarity to use her magic, or her magic is dulled down && weakened. She doesn't get to pick && choose apparently. It’s all a battle && guard.

“I’m so sorry Princess Bayden did my battery talk not make sense?! It was better then talking about a raccoon?! I think I did a pretty damn good job for that battery speech. Souls are kinda like batteries in a way. It’s not like I had time to think things through before when I said it then anyway!!” Her eyes narrowed until they looked like the edges of coins as there was to much light from the sun in her face.

“I was already going to tell you anyway!!! Don’t be a sour lemon. We both agreed to talk it out over coffee like normal people outside of Briarcliff. Only part not so sane is the rain bit but it’s the kind of thing that naturally feels like that kind of conversation takes place in.” Maybe it was more how she was influenced by movies or Tv shows?

Celestis looked stoic by this hard left turn in the conversation. Bayden was mentally institutionalized for being a serial killer? There was a moment. Just a moment where after Bayden said that made every nerve ending Celestis possessed twinge, chills running under her skin despite the bright California sunlight. For a second things got silent. Feeling a flow of fear like a dark tide, oily && thick as ink. It chilled her bones but she can’t help but feel his sister was more a psychopathic serial killer then himself. This kid adores && cries at the site of freaking bunnies && shit.

The eeriness faded rather quickly as she didn’t feel threatened it was just her own fears playing tricks on herself. Choose one’s poison, she’d rather take her chances with the bunny crier. Monty however was a different story. Celestis always felt something was off instinct wise around Monty. But around Bayden? It’s different. There’s nothing truly instinctive telling her to stay vigilant around Bayden. Nothing telling her she’s in danger as she let herself get swept up in the moment. Stupid.

“Well your seriously KILLING m e with spoilers of your life!” Celestis looking more annoyed now than stoic as she eased back into normalness. “Don’t think you’re getting out of buying me coffee on a rainy day Princess.” Holding him to it. Regardless of how many months it took.

“GREAT! I’m just a T h y l a c i n e to you.” Just for that, she took one of the gardenia’s && threw it at his face. She hoped pollen get’s in his eye. Feel the real? It was a little sad, to some extent that he somehow wished she was some delusion of his. But Bayden was always so weird sometimes as that was this kind of moment right now. She may have lost one gardenia — to remind him of her realism. Celestis really should just start throwing things at him randomly since she couldn’t kick him where it HURTS. A little to violent for her tastes. Now she felt even more awkward. “You sure you CAN’T do b e t t e r?”

Pit Babe Live Blogging

This show is finally ending, I've been stopping myself from starting it since like December I think when I saw Tiktoks from those early episodes (honestly younger, cute boytoy top Charlie who is so beautiful to me had a hand in that lol). The chatter also seems to really like the show, maybe unexpectedly for quite a few people (also I think at least a certain amount of it is for the side ship? okay I'm reading the on-air thread for this on r/boyslove and some people are like hmmm about their chemistry so far and are like why is the NC stuff so tame/vague but personally... I can watch the NC scenes when it's like this, so it's going well in my books lol rip, though I kinda assume it might get more heated in the later eps? Also hm idk about Charlie and Babe's chemistry, it seems fine but not magnetic/magical yet.

Also people in that thread seem to have little to no experience with omegaverse or have mostly read alpha/omega and also seem confused about what's allowed vs not allowed when in fact, there's no rigid rules with omegaverse because it's a literal fanfic concept and you can make it whatever you want. Personally, I haven't read any original book/manhua/etc. with omegaverse but am so well-versed in fanfic a/b/o lol a/a o/o a/o are all great, sometimes with a beta though beta/x do tend to be quite rare, even more than a/a and o/o I feel like?? Also have read OT3 a/b/o or a/a/o or a/o/o etc. Love all the different types of fics omegaverse has to offer: the 4k explicit fics and 20k romances and 60k of criticizing society/trying to break out of the rigid molds/mirroring real world issues/etc. Traditional, medium trad-nontrad, and nontraditional omegaverse can all also be interesting and good.

Overall:

This show had everything: non-traditional alpha/alpha relationship (w concepts I wasn't aware of like Enigmas but somehow no Omegas lol), racecar competitions, x-men like superpowers (heightened senses, stealing powers, hypnosis, mind reading, telling the future), child trafficking, pseudo-incest if you think about it (from Kenta's side at least) and more. And it didn't have a super strong script, there were nonsensical elements and plot holes that didn't get addressed and things that happened to just move the plot along, but it was a fun watch nonetheless, both for the novelty and the entertainment factor.

The most important aspect of the show was definitely the characters and relationships despite there being like a wrong human trafficking ring and everything involved; it well went back to how it affected the people and their relationships. Babe was a very compelling character with his past and how he behaves in the present and his relationships with Tony/Way/people in general. Also helped that Pavel did a really good job with him and acted his ass off, there were quite a few emotional moments in there.

I agree with some people's comments that I wish Charlie's actor Pooh as a better actor. And his character wasn't as developed or with depth as the other ones either, like in terms of emotions I guess. I could never quite tell how much in love with Babe he really was at a given time because he didn't quite... look it, it looked more like a little puppy fanboy who may or may not be playing it up to conceal his true intentions. Alan and Jeff were cuter in my head before they got together tbh. North and Sonic are dating to me, they're so cute.

Although I really liked Charlie/Babe, my true ship winners might be Pete/Kenta in a Not Me ToddBlack fashion, to be honest, with Kenta as maybe my favourite character (2nd is Babe). They gave us like 2 tiny hints that they might know each other and waited until literally last 10 mins of episode 11 out of 13 to lay out their history and baggage and relationship and Kenta's crush, all the while showing them in a fight where Kenta's trying to hurt Pete (but Pete knowing Kenta can't kill him). They have an interesting friends (-> brothers/crush) -> enemies -> allies again at the very end dynamic where I think that they could become lovers post-canon. And I love how pathetic and desperate for love Kenta is and how he was willing to do despicable things for Tony's approval before finally, finally knifing him. Really had me writing a fic idea in my notes app after my few months of no drive to write, I wonder if I'll actually finish it or not because it's kinda... more explicit and intense than the fics I usually write but it was really good in my brain.

Once again, I'm shallow, so here are the people I find most beautiful: Charlie specifically when he has his glasses on and is being a cute puppy, Sonic omg pretty girl for real, Babe is so attractive - esp the younger version of him without the gelled hair but even in the present day when he smiles and is happy he's so beautiful. Jeff sometimes but I think I'm more into his vibes than specifically his face. Way is gorgeous omg, also aside but that actor has mentioned dating men before including a 7 year relationship.

HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY!!! It's really a late birthday wish now gn but I'm glad you got to spend it with friends! I was truly expecting Moriarty back again as well, for good reason, and honestly immensely disappointed we didn't get him, despite his fleeting presence in the show (being alive that is) he was top tier. Ok re-reading that really brought back my memories of the show what on earth was the thought process because they completely lost their backbone with Marys character development / exploration. The writing was really, really lacking on occasion- maybe not the writing per se but the plot and how linear / seamless it flowed. The way you broke it down on how their marriage was falling apart but oh what's this?? Mary and Sherlocks bffs arc with a steel chair? The easy way out fr and they really sealed off any potential hope of something more arising from it for good. It was anything but satisfying, nobility and shock value aside it felt like an extremely boring conclusion to a character that could've literally broken the mold on shows like this. I had no fucking idea there was proper logic and reasoning behind the tea is gay etc. shirt (I hope your book goes balls to the walls on breaking down eating / food imagery I need to hear about it in respect to this) because that paints a chunk of her video in an entirely different light. That's genuinely interesting and raises good points but it was just used as a device to "prove" the fandom was talking shit. You're so right about Tumblr coming together collectively to draw together theories / conclusions regarding shows etc. and if it's all whittled down to the doings of one singular person it's not entirely fair nor accurate. I really thought she was one of the girls, a tumblrina if you will but she's going out of her way to make the people who were fans at the time look senseless 😭 and profiting 🙁 It literally just gets the more I read. Documenting Tumblr is a hefty challenge especially over such a long period of time, you're bound to miss critical aspects somewhere from lack of memory or simply not knowing about their existence, but outright and knowingly forgoing information?? It's making sense why she went denying others help / statements 🥴 I can see why people were opposing the creation of the video, clearly it was quite lacking in the unbiased information department, just giving an overview- an unbiased rundown would've been an interesting documentary style vid but she seems to have skewed the narrative to suit her. On an absolute side note I've not seen Hannibal but I've really considered starting it for like two years (more like every time someone references it on my dash). Besides the real obvious plot line I know literally nothing about it nor its reception in the public but lmk if you enjoyed it / found it worth! Purr on the hobbit being a little lost in translation of media, I think it might be a complete knock out for me if I were to attempt the books though. Every time I start reading or even glimpsing sideways at a fantasy novel there's just so much worldbuilding down to the slang language they use I lose track so quickly.

3 solid years before returning to a show I don't know if I'm more impressed at your dedication to finishing it or the fact you remembered it existed. I can barely remember the shows I watched last month and if I finished the show then I will be capable of answering nothing about it, it's wiped from memory. Going back to games is way harder too I hope rise of the tomb raider sees you again soon. I actually managed to complete my first game in a while the other day, Corpse Party? Idk if that's a blast from the past for you but I remember watching a lets play of it when I was new to the internet and wanted to play it myself. I was surprised at the scenes I remembered considering it was like a decade ago but it is a horror so maybe that explains it. I will say it wasn't that bad when there were chase scenes the characters moved so slow it was actually funny. I feel like the only habit I can consistently do for a little escapism as a treat in my day to day life is read some random ff on ao3 before I go to sleep. A random fandom, sort by kudos, page 5 onwards and start scrolling, literal gems in there. Currently side eyeing the spn fandom as I've never once read a fic or even watched an episode but there's just so many there's bound to be some good stories. Misha coming out as straight really had some unforeseen side effects, like putting spn into my mind for the first time in a year.

Honestly second season of squid game chances are is only going to leave disappointment in its path here. From the kdramas I've watched, not all but a lot really do just stick to one season and that's it, as much as I can appreciate Netflix trying to shake things up and introduce more long term plans I really think Squid Game was not the one to double down on. We're relating on a lot I'm ngl, the daddy issues too? Can we catch a break 😭 But noted, last episode of Arcane and I'll make sure I don't have any plans to leave my apartment room. Ok next long weekend I get I'll try for a Jujutsu Kaisen binge because the thought of a proper dark arc coming soon sounds like it's worth the anticipation. You've really hit the nail on the head with demon slayer, The main character is just very morally straight and narrow from ep 1 and you're not super attached to him for it. Zenitsu and Inosuke are who I think of first when I talk about the show. Definitely more background from either of their side would be nice. I did hear that it was done, back before I started watching it a friend at the time showed my a major spoiler so I'm going to assume it was set for near completion at that point as well, like a year and a half ago. It is surprising that it's so short but like you said if they had managed to flesh out Tanjiro a bit more they could've milked this cash cow for years. It does make my heart happy that there's a decent Zenitsu fight on the way, something to look forward to and I'll force myself into watching for it. I hope they pour the budget on him, nothing worse than an anime series flopping on scenes you were anticipating for years (haikyuu s4 I hate to throw you under the bus). I too am a big fan of seeing my faves go through their hurt to comfort route, it makes it all the more satisfyingly when things come back around. We need that here, we need hurt increased and I would also like an enforced found family dynamic because what they've got going on is too casual, too purely circumstantial (I don't even remember the plot enough to tell you why they're with each other but it wasn't selling me at the time anyway). They're one level above the avengers tower, it's not nearly enough. Ok the fact I know the exact radio show with Zenitsus va calling the coins, eyes closed, purely based on sound is so funny that was so surprising. Also I had completely forgot Zenitsu was voicing Dabi holy fuck the duality of these guys. My biggest surprise in connecting the seiyuu dots as it were, and this isn't even surprising tbh but I just wasn't expecting the voice of Dazai from Stray Dogs to be the same man to voice fucking Light from Death Note. This shocked me I was floored with this info, I think its because I've seen the va with the cast on stray dogs interacting and he is such a fun, extroverted personality I just would not have pegged this man to play such a sinister role 15 years prior. Either way, love that man (I don't know anything about him) and good for him what a resume. I too am a big Sokka enjoyer so I love that we've gone for the siblings. I loved the fact that he was not deterred one bit by miss katara strongest water bender you could meet in your life, toph metal bender herself, and the literal avatar. He would just roll up with his boomerang and I loved him for it. Yet, then all of a sudden in s3 they randomly gave him an episode where he was doubting himself, his abilities, why he was even there. Like fair and expected if this happened in s1 / early s2 when things were starting to take shape, but it felt like such an after thought of his character, a grab at a spare scene to flesh out an ep. To me it was nothing like his personality, especially after a year of travelling and proving yourself useful time and time and time again, not once hinting at this doubt even on the smallest of scales. Maybe I missed his feelings previously if expressed but it felt half assed to me. The found family ATLA gave us is on the tallest tip of the pyramid for sure, they went through fights and disagreements of all sorts it felt really worked at, it was so good. I haven't seen Voltron, well I have seen the very first episode that I watched 5 years ago but I didn't stick to it? Although kind of wouldn't be opposed to trying it, I keep thinking of this one video I saw where this guy was swearing his life down that the first two seasons of the show were a gift from the heavens and I haven't been able to shake his opinion. I'm sorry to hear that the final season ever was that bad, it's giving GoT disappointment, it's such a shit feeling seeing your favorites get left with mediocrity.

I'll look into Devilman Crybaby, it's been sitting in my Netflix list for probably two years so it might be approaching its time. I'm interested to see what type of ending it has, I am with you undoubtedly that DN was deserving of something better for L and Light, fair enough if the series ended with them but the fact that it didn't. Just give him the win at that point I don't know what to tell ya but I've lost interest like he's just lost his life. I say that but I still enjoyed the show a lot a lot but improvements would go a long way, I'd love to see a remake / spin-off in the future with an alternate ending. Oh really? I didn't know people weren't keen on the animating style in ToG but I really loved it. I haven't read the webtoon yet either despite swearing I would after finishing s1 yet here we are. The betrayal scene took me by such surprise I was expecting Rachel to be not how Bam saw her but I was not expecting that. The Promised Neverland was one of my all time faves when I first saw S1! Lotta lotta love for Ray I'll be honest, he played the waiting game and was suffering mentally for it but he played his cards so right. S2 if you haven't seen I'll confirm for you that it sucked, it was very sub par in comparison to s1 and on checking up the fandom spaces after it looked like the scenes were really rushed as if to fit it into the 12 ep space. Very lacking, I'm sure reading the manga would fulfill some disappointment but again when something you've waited for isn't animated well it's so annoying.

You've really put into words how Dream makes you feel as a viewer, just untrustworthy (and honestly disbelieving) of what he's choosing to tell the viewers because it is ultimately for a gain on his end but it's done in a more under the table, pulling the puppet strings way. Like oh I'll leak the knf kiss and other random pieces of info on my private podcast, people talk about it on twitter and cite my merch discord stream, it gains the reputation for spilling secrets there, merch sales spike because people don't want to miss it (lot of fomo in the twt fandom space), people want to be a part of the discord general chat, have a chance to talk with him one on one, etc. I understand it's working well so stopping isn't going to be considered an option from his pov but it's the fact the secrets he leaks aren't even surrounding him. Fair enough if he was just using his own instances or experiences to get people coming in but using your friends business fr? tbh to me he does seem to see Gnf + Sapnap as expendables that he created in the fucking dream cinematic universe so telling their info doesn't seem to bother him (literally not once ever). I absolutely feel where you're coming from in seeing traits in his friendships that would not be flying if it was happening between you and a friend. Hearing something you told a friend in confidence come back around is shit enough nevermind it coming back 1,000 fold. Not even just the gossip but as you said his live behavior half the time is pulling the piss. Wouldn't do well to forget him and Tommy's back and forth in the replies of a Philza tweet either because that was so telling on his character but I also love how Philza came to Tommy's defense, good for you king. Definitely can appreciate Georges approach to content creation being (what seems to be) a more amplified version of the parts of himself he wants to showcase. As you said, it's not a massive mask (that was unintentional) or a newly crafted persona, it's just him, just some guy. His backstory or his personal experiences aren't his content, so as you said feels a bit weird getting that layer, it's like been given a piece of a jigsaw for a puzzle that isn't yours. Exactly as you said as well with Bad and Q having a mutual ground of being open on stream, like it goes both ways with them no bother. George on the other hand has yet to go out of his way, at least to my knowledge, to tell something private to thousands about Dreams personal life. If it's not replicated behavior on your friends part then it looks like a pretty good indicator to simply stop.

Ok kind of fun I also used to watch Foolishes streams but bare in mind this was literally like last year so I think I'm out of the loop by a long shot. He was a reliable watch for sure and the builds were definitely what I was watching, I think Kinoko at the time. Don't know how well I'd take to his Gordon Ramsey or valorant plays in the bg as noise tbh but if I'm stuck for something I'll give him a peak. I'll be honest the co-op games are honestly stressful, even playing with my friends one of them takes it serious while my other friend and I like to play anything but the characters intended roles, so it's a bit of an interesting dynamic. It's fun but intimidating starting out, there are times when I was the enemy teams best player and by God was I reminded of it in chat. Playing with enough mutuals so that you have the majority is the way to go. I wish that I could play Genshin soo bad! My laptop is quite a cheap one so Genshin would play at 1 frame a minute it was atrocious I didn't even get halfway in the intro scene. I then used an old iPhone to download it but old is the word I think a 5 se? and it worked but the phone charges once every two months so I threw in the towel. I got about as far as George did in his first sponsored stream. However, I am thinking in investing in a new phone (my current one is incapable of running it) so I'll definitely get it when I upgrade (I was heavily considering an iPhone purchase but they scam their customers so hard with no headphone jack? no wall plug? no money left after purchase? so the decision process will be a time consuming one). Do you play on pc/phone? I'm assuming PC is fun af tbh but I've seen enough tiktoks of people wishing at concerts for the good luck to know its at least playable ahjbdh. Although this won't mean much to me right now who do you main on Genshin? I don't know anyone apart from Paimon and they're not even playable 😭 I also sadly haven't tried BOTW but I'm aiming to soon, it's one of the best games I hear on the switch and honestly the bar is 6 feet under but it does look good.

Working from home is so sexy I literally love it, the pjamma pants set up, work laptop in bed, and a cup of tea in hand, it's ideal. Honestly I find the hardest part of my job (my job mainly being a mix between computer work & running tests) is actually talking to my coworkers 😭 All who I spend most time with are genuinely lovely people but I find it hard to open up as is so when they talk so freely about their personal lives I'll smile and nod, and those are my sole contributions. Luckily(? Maybe not) the topic these days has surrounded the stock market, which I've only ever looked at to see the GameStop graph like a year and a half ago so I'm a little out of depth bye. To be fair I don't think I'll be correlating on many topics with them but I'm at the very least learning a lot at the lunch table. I think my course has it so we'll at a maximum have a choice between two lecturers to work under. One of them would definitely be strict on the deadlines but he's so extroverted and eccentric? Like he's 5'5/5'6 and yet the most intimidating man I've ever met?? But maybe that's what I need, a short king capable of making me fear for my happiness walking into class. For real don't worry about rambling in any direction, I enjoy reading your thoughts always pop off fr and I'm the exact same in favoring typing over actually articulating my thoughts in real time. I'm glad we have a so many joint interests!! I hope to start one of your anime recs this weekend as I've got one episode left of breaking bad 🤒 it only took 6 months but we made it and it was some roller-coaster of a show. I really enjoyed it, I think my favorite ;part was s2 middle to the end because it just stepped up in how deep it was getting. Not like s1 wasn't telling but fuck me s2 just hit way fucking harder. I finally figured out why it feels like Supernatural murdered a unicorn (AKA why you need to STOP telling me to watch Black Sails)

I’ll start by saying, everything everyone else has been saying CERTAINLY bothers me:

- the queer-baiting - the bury your queers - the undermining of Dean’s character arc - the wasted opportunity for a certain kind of overall narrative closure - the flat out disrespect to Misha Collins and Jensen Ackles

All of that bothers me tremendously.

But there has been something else rather ineffable about this that has left a horrible taste in my mouth that I couldn’t quite pin down until last night. Bear with me, if you will, because this will require some set-up.

*** This is not the first show to ever disappoint me in a spectacular fashion, nor will it be the last, I suspect. And one of the ways I’ve always coped with that disappointment was to remind myself that there will be other stories, other characters, other chances to get it right. (”It” being any number of things from just pure narrative emotional coherence to not burying your queers to not stringing along your queer audience and then yelling fuck you to them on the way out)

But somehow that assurance -- that there will be other stories, other characters, other chances to get it right -- has rung particularly hollow in this instance, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on why until yesterday.

I kept asking myself, why do I still have this feeling, deep in the pit of my stomach, like something was lost here that can never be recovered?

Because something was lost here that I am doubtful can ever be recovered, and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else talking about this aspect of it at all.

A few months ago, TV critic Maureen Ryan did a great interview piece with Mike Schur (of Parks & Rec/The Good Place) discussing the death of long-form TV in the streaming era. They explore how the longer seasons and longer runs of traditional broadcast/cable TV provided an opportunity to tell particular kinds of stories that you simply can’t when seasons are 8-10 episodes and series typically run 2-4 seasons (thanks Netflix).

One key thing we’ve all lost in this new era of highly condensed TV storytelling (and of prestige TV narrative styles)? The traditional (several season’s long) slow-burn/will-they-won’t-they romance. Not only is there simply no longer the time or space to write such romances, it has also come to be seen as hacky, manipulative, cheap, artistically impoverished, low-brow, a embarrassing vestige of the era before TV became art™.

Everybody is trying to be Fleabag now. No one wants to be Frasier. (”It’s really more like a 10 hour movie” they all like to brag)

Obviously TV still has romances, even ‘drawn out’ romances. But ‘drawn out’ in 2020 is like 2-3 seasons, maybe. More commonly it’s like half a season. Take Schitt’s Creek. The number of episodes between when David and Patrick first meet and when they first kiss? Seven. Seven episodes. Half a season. If you watched it live, it took less than 2 months for them to move from introducing that dynamic to consummating it. And I’m not bagging on Schitt’s Creek; I think the David/Patrick’s story is very lovely and well-written.

But Niles & Daphne (Fraiser) had to wait 7 years and over 150 episodes before they finally got there. Josh & Donna (The West Wing) had to wait 6+ years, and 145 episodes. Mulder & Scully (The X-Files) had to wait 7 seasons and 143 episodes. Booth & Bones had to wait...you see where I am going with this.

And my point is (and I can’t believe I never realized this explicitly until now): there has NEVER been a queer slow-burn/will-they-won’t-they romance of that type on TV ever. EVER.

I’m going to say that again, because I think it bares repeating:

There has never been a queer, slow-burn/will-they-won’t-they romance that fits the 100-150 episode paradigm of delayed gratification on TV.

Not ever.

I can’t think of ONE example Not a single, solitary one. And I know queer TV pretty well. Arguably the closest we’ve ever come is Legend of Korra, and that ran 50 episodes, a THIRD of the length of old school will-they-won’t-theys like Booth & Bones or Josh & Donna.

Queer people have had a fair number of canonical romances on TV by now, even fairly long running ones. But we never got a primary/front-and-center romance that you had to root for for 100+ episodes before you got any kind of canonical consummation.

That is a particular kind of TV experience that queer people and queer characters were just 100% shut out of until it was too late. And because of how the TV landscape has changed in the last 10 years, I don’t know that that opportunity will ever come back around in our lifetimes.

Dean and Castiel are/were a legacy of an earlier era of TV, an era that still contained the possibility for a will-they-won’t-they of that particular mold. There were other shows that could have also filled this gap at one time - Rizzoli & Isles, OUAT, House MD, etc. But one by one all of them were killed off, their queer romances unrequited, until Supernatural was the only one of its’ generation left standing.

And they should have acknowledged that they were a species about to become extinct.

There are plenty of other valid and compelling reasons Supernatural should have gone full Destiel, don’t get me wrong.

A) It would have been the most emotionally satisfying ending to the series and to those characters (and that would have been reason enough).

B) It would have stopped the manipulative queer-baiting of the (disproportionately queer) fanbase (and that would have been reason enough).

C) It would have been queer representation of middle-aged men, of bi men, of queers who came to their queerness later in life (and any/all of those would have been reason enough).

D) It could have been a glorious subversion of the bury your queers trope, considering how often they’ve died and been resurrected (and that would have been reason enough).

But point E) on this list is the reason this one hurts in a singular way that no one even appears to be acknowledging.

Almost all of the other wrongs and missed opportunities contained in this Supernatural debacle have the possibility of being rectified (at least to a degree) elsewhere. I can and I likely will get more bi male characters from TV as time goes on. I can and likely will get more middle-aged queer characters. I can and likely will get more queer characters coming to their queerness later in life, and starting queer romances later in life. I can and likely will get more queer characters who aren’t killed cheaply and prematurely. I can and likely will get more genre TV shows with sprawling myth arc plots that are resolved in a coherent, satisfying way. I can and likely will get Misha Collins and Jensen Ackles involved in other projects that value their work and their talents.

All of those other things are at the very least POSSIBLE, and many are even likely.

But a queer 100-150 episode slow-burn romance a la Mulder & Scully or Niles & Daphne or Booth & Bones? That is the one baton Supernatural dropped spectacularly that no one else even has the possibility of picking up again for the foreseeable future. (They don’t even write those types of romances for heterosexuals anymore!)

Seriously. It was a TV unicorn. And rather than letting it run wild and free, they stabbed it with a rusty nail.

Given the monumental shifts in the TV landscape that have occurred in the last decade, I don’t know that TV will ever go back to the slow-burn/will-they-won’t-they romance spanning 100-150 episodes. Today it is a miracle if you can get ANY show to last longer than 50 episodes in the first place.

And that is the piece of this that makes it feel (to me) like they murdered a unicorn.

Because queer people have gotten a lot of things from TV, and they will get a lot more as time goes on. But that one? That one could very well be a totally extinct species.

That is the larger missed opportunity here that has left this feeling especially hollow and destructive. That is the thing that makes me balk when people tell me to go watch Black Sails or Pose or whatever other prestige TV show is doing this representation ‘better.’ Because that’s not really the loss I am mourning here. I KNOW there is ‘better’ representation elsewhere.

But the will-they-won’t-they/slow-burn romance is a qualitatively unique thing that queer people literally just never got. Ever. There is no substitute, no alternate, no other show I can turn to with that kind of build-up and pay-off for a queer couple, and there probably won’t be in my lifetime. Not unless the TV industry undergoes another monumental evolution similar to the streaming revolution that shifts the incentives back to telling those types of stories again.

All those shows you want me to displace Supernatural with? None of them can give me the one thing I uniquely wanted (and could have gotten) from Supernatural. THAT ALTERNATE SHOW DOESN’T EXIST. It doesn’t exist. And I have no reason to hope it will ever exist in my lifetime.

So stop telling me to look somewhere else; you don’t understand what made this one a unicorn.

Addendum: The only other possible show that could perhaps fill this gap is It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (re: Mac/Dennis). But I’m hesitant to say it exactly meets that criteria, for a number of reasons:

1 - It’s far less serialized relative to Supernatural and (except for a handful of stand-alone episodes) very little of the story is grounded specifically in Dennis/Mac’s romantic dynamic (unlike SPN, where it is absolutely central to much of the narrative)

2 - IASIP is fundamentally satirically in nature/tone which makes it much harder to have genuine romantic pathos (not impossible, but harder)

3 - All the characters on IASIP are fundamentally crummy people who you aren’t exactly supposed to root for. Which doesn’t mean a romance between two of them can’t have its value/charm/worth but it’s not the same as when it is between characters who unequivocally deserve nice things/happy endings

The Spider-Man Home Trilogy is About Being Better Than the Heroes Around Him

Full Spoilers for NWH, you have been warned!

I know this sounds pompous but here me out. This Trilogy is about Peter forming into the best hero. The best of the MCU, the best of the Spider films. He is being molded and he is working to become the best hero we have seen.

The Home Trilogy and Spidey in the MCU creates a huge focus on death and murder. This Trilogy takes a very hard stance on Spider-Man, well, two stances.

1. Spider-Man Does. Not. Kill.

2. Spider-Man does not allow anyone to die, regardless of who or how.

We see this before NWH, how he rescues the Vulture and how he won't activate instant kill. Mysterio dies but it is not by Peter's hand, and he is realistically doing everything he can anyway. That is why it's such a big deal that people think he killed Mysterio, because Peter doesn't kill.

This Trilogy is very unique in the MCU. The MCU has not taken this hard of an anti killing stance before. This Trilogy not only takes it, but shows us WHY it isn't taken, because it's so hard.

Vulture beats Peter to a pulp, Mysterio ruins his confidence and threatens his friends, Electro is a virtual nuke waiting to go off, and, as we all know, Goblin kills May.

In NWH, Peter can't kill Goblin even if he really wants to, hell, Peter can't send the villains home knowing they'll die. The people in his life won't let him because Spider-Man values life above all else.

Notably, if he had succeeded in killing Goblin, that would have been Peter's first murder in the trilogy. Peter has not taken a life yet, and that plot point is everything. The fact he doesn't kill, that he hasn't killed, is the central theme of this Trilogy. This theme is how he fulfills Tony's wish, to become better than him and all the other heroes around Peter.

Peter is surrounded by heroes in this trilogy. Tony, Stephen, Fury (yes it's Talos but Peter never knows that), Beck (he wants to be a hero at least), and even two other Peters (sidenote: I will refer to Holland's Peter as Peter while referring to the other two as Tobey and Andrew). Icons, legends, all well loved either in or out of universe. But what Peter does to be better, to be the top, is he never kills, something the other five cannot say.

Tony kills a lot. Even after becoming Iron Man and stopping weapon production, he kills villains and goons all the time. This is not to slander him or support him, this is just how it is. Mysterio played at being a hero and earned Peter's respect, then showed how much of a douchy murderer he really was. Fury is both a murderer as well as hires murderers, it's literally his job. Talos, even though Peter knows it is him, is the leader of his people in war. he kills Strange has also killed, but more notably, allows death to happen for the greater good. He willingly allows Tony to die in order to accomplish a greater good, and in this film, he is doing the same with the villains. Tobey technically hasn't killed, but he was responsible for the death of Dennis Carradine and he truly did believe he murdered Sandman, not to mention blowing up Harry. Then Andrew did kill Electro, I know that may not be the technical outcome but it's the practical one, Electro is dead. Andrew also talks about how he got bitter and stopped pulling his punches. This isn't explicitly admitting to murder, but a + b = c, you know? If a guy who can toss cars around with little effort is no longer pulling his punches against common crooks, well, that adds up to killing, or at least seriously maiming.

The heroes found throughout this Trilogy all kill or have killed. They have varying degrees of how much they have killed and how much they regret it, but they all do. But not Peter. Now, Peter was going to kill Goblin and was stopped, but after that he cures Norman. He isn't happy, you can feel the rage radiating off of him, but he does it, and it's really cause of Tobey. The heroes in his life all pushed him to be better. Tony, Tobey, and Andrew did in a positive, supporting way, while Beck and Strange pushed Peter to be better in defiance of them.

Peter fights villains, fights Strange, trying to save evil people. He fights to save Vulture, to save Doc Ock, Electro, Lizard, Sandman, all of them. He fights to save these evil people, even as they try to kill him, because life has value and that is what Spider-Man does. He even, in the end, saves Green Goblin.

Peter's situation with Goblin eerily mirrors Tony's in Civil War. A man not in his right mind murderers their mom, and they both lash out in attempts to murder. Where Peter becomes better than Tony here is how when their friend intervenes, Steve and Tobey respectively, Peter heeds his friend and his mother. He abides his anger and he cures Norman. Now, Tobey and Peter as well as Peter and May had a much better relationship than Tony and Steve, also the circumstances are different in how Bucky and Norman ended up here, but they are pretty similar parallels. Peter becomes better than Tony because he never falls to murder and he heeds his loved ones in stopping his attempt.

Peter doesn't fall to revenge like Beck, Tobey, and Andrew did. Peter doesn't keep going through his friend to try and murder like Tony. Peter refuses to sit back and watch people die like Strange did. This is the thesis of the trilogy, this is what all the murder and death themes amount to:

Peter becomes the best hero in his own life because he listens to experiences from people before him, he listens to May, and he ultimately escapes the trilogy without murdering a single soul while saving the multiverse.

Well, not the entire multiverse, sorry Beck and May

Edit: as was brought up in my comments by @shaolin-shitpost, it is important to note Peter planning the death of Ebony Maw and killing Outriders which is important to address.

I chose to admit it at the time due to some weird things I associate with it. For one, in the comics alien soldiers don't seem to count for no kill rules, Batman will tear through Parademons and such. In Young Justice S1 the heroes have strong no kill rules but in the alien Invasion episode they do kill without hesitancy. Honestly just in superhero properties I think writers treat killing alien goons as not applying. Also, as IW+Endgame weren't written by Watts, I don't see those two films as applying very greatly to Watt's trilogy.

If that isn't good enough reasoning for you I get it, but I kind of choose to omit those movies (also considering Peter was protecting the universe, significantly higher stakes than anything in his trilogy).

BnHA Chapter 305: Worst Intervention Ever

Previously on BnHA: Shinomori, whose name took me an entire week to memorize, was all, “nice to meet you Deku, I’m ten feet tall, do you want to know how I died?” and without waiting for an answer explained that he kicked it from old age at forty thanks to good ol’ OFA. Deku was all “wait a minute, then how come All Might, who’s fifty-five and is definitely dyeing his gray hair, is still alive?” First and Shino were all, “we really have no fucking clue but we think it’s cuz he’s quirkless, JUST LIKE YOU!” So basically, since quirkless people don’t exactly grow on trees these days, Deku is probably going to be the last user of OFA. The chapter ended with Nana being all, “psst, Deku, about my grandson. Uh, can you kill him?” which is sure to lead to a very interesting conversation this week.

Today on BnHA: Nana And The Gang are all “so, Deku, how can we put this delicately. The thing is, we’re pretty sure that AFO really fucked my grandson up, so on the off chance you can’t save him, how would you feel about, you know... [throat slitting gesture].” Deku is all “idk you guys, I kinda feel like he’s really just a traumatized child at heart and he’s in a lot of pain and stuff and so I should try to help him.” The Vestiges are all “BUT WHAT IF YOU CAN’T” and Deku is all “BUT I WANT TO TRY, DAMMIT” and the Vestiges are all “well when you put it that way, we, uh, were just testing you, so congrats, you passed!” The chapter ends with First being all, “ANYWAY SO WHY DON’T YOU TWO SHY BOYS STANDING OVER THERE IN THE SHADOWS COME SAY HELLO” before we CUT AWAY FOR ANOTHER WEEK, goddammit.

AFO molded him into a killer by making sure he was in constant mental agony, and making it so that the only thing that even slightly relieved that agony was killing peeps. like, please don’t think I’m making excuses for him or anything, but if you take a child and manipulate their existence to make it virtually impossible for that child to grow up as anything other than a killer, and basically never give him the chance to be anything else, then no shit he’s gonna be a killer?? he’s basically never had the choice not to be. it’s never been an option for him. anyways I feel like I am EXPLAINING MYSELF SO BADLY but nonetheless I am prepared to die on this hill

anyway so now Nana is all “that’s a rhetorical question btw because Our Hearts And Minds Are One so we can feel everything you feel bro.” so yeah, that’s interesting
