Operations Go Awry
This is a mess, but my Operation Nope fic for the @litgwritersroom prompt.
The moment Lily walked in hanging off Harry’s arm, Elladine saw her chance. Normally, she wouldn’t be this person. Never. She would’ve felt sympathy for Devyn when Harry forgot her name as he introduced the girls. But she had to admit it, at least to herself, that she was jealous of the friendship Nicky had with Devyn. Jealous of the way the two of them could share looks and understand each other when she couldn’t. It was the only issue she had with Devyn. So when Genevieve told her that she’d talked to Lily, and Nicky was her back up plan if Harry wasn’t interested- well, she wasn’t going to lose her man over Devyn’s couple. She already lost him to Devyn enough times when they went to have chats and left her alone.
So she cornered Lily on her first day, asking her if she really wanted Harry.
Lily’s eyes were narrowed as she looked Elladine over, “Why would you wanna help me? Isn’t she like the best mate of the love of your life or whatever?”
Elladine rolled her eyes as she responded, “Technically, but sometimes I feel like I can’t trust their intentions with each other. They’ve ditched me constantly to have private chats, and how much he compares her to a sister is such an overcompensation. Feels like-“
“Like he latched on to you early and fancies her now but doesn’t know how to break the news.” Lily smirked knowingly, Elladine returned it with a nod before leveling her with a scowl.
“Look, I know Nicky is your back up. So let’s just…tip the scales for Harry’s decision.” Elladine glanced around the two of them, trying to ensure there were no eavesdroppers. Seb wasn’t too far away, but he was fast asleep on the sun lounger.
Lily leaned a little closer anyway, “What did you have in mind?”
“Do you remember Operation Nope last season?”
Seb knew that Nicky sometimes felt torn between Elladine and Devyn. He couldn’t blame the guy- where Elladine was the picture of an easygoing relationship, Devyn brought out Nicky’s fun side and challenged him. Nicky had even told Seb- and only Seb- at each recoupling that he thought of picking his best mate, even though he had no idea how she’d react. But then he’d end up playing it safe and choosing the same girl since the beginning. Seb couldn’t blame Elladine for being cautious of their friendship when he knew those things, but he couldn’t believe he’d heard her plan this either.
As soon as Elladine and Lily had separated, Seb ‘woke up’, taking just a minute to act out like he was stretching out from a nap, before going off in search of Viv and Nicky.
“That’s the plan I heard.” Seb told them as he finished the story, he wasn’t sure if they’d believe him, but he needed to tell someone what was happening.
“You can’t have heard it right, mate.” Nicky shook his head, “Elladine wouldn’t-“
Viv quietly interrupted, “I don’t know, Nicks, when I told her that Lily said you were her back up plan, she looked absolutely livid. I’ve never seen her look like that. She’s always felt a little threatened by Devyn- to have someone else planning to vie for your attention might’ve-“
“Might’ve what? Pushed her over the edge?” Nicky shook his head, “No way.”
The couple speaking to him weren’t sure what to say- Viv trusted what Seb said he heard, but Nicky just couldn’t imagine the girl he was with ruining something good for his best mate like that. And then Bill chose that moment to wander over, like the secret gossip monger he was, “Bloody hell, mate, you hear Dev kissed Rafi after their date?”
All three of them went stone still as their heads jerked to the roofer, “What did you say?” Nicky’s voiced was laced with disbelief.
Bill nodded, lips pursed, “Didn’t expect her to do that to my lad so late in the game, but maybe she’s been doing just that the whole time- playing the game.”
“Who told you that?” The boys startled at the intensity in Viv’s voice. Intensity wasn’t her style, she was sweet and soft.
Bill shrugged anyway, “I was there when Elladine told Harry. Guess her and Lily were walking past and saw it happen.”
“Elladine. And Lily?” Seb’s tone could only be described as skeptical.
“Does Devyn know?” Nicky asked. He believed Seb now, because as much as he wanted to think Elladine wouldn’t do that to her, he knew Devyn wouldn’t do that to Harry.
The roofer shook his head, “Harry’s waiting for her to admit it. I keep telling him to just call her out.” Nicky shot to his feet, Seb and Viv quickly following as he hurried out of the room, leaving a confused and annoyed Bill in their wake.
When the party started, Harry was astutely avoiding Devyn, so Nicky stuck by her side. He didn’t care that he was giving Elladine the cold shoulder to do it, he wasn’t the only one- he was pretty sure sweet Genevieve was mentally thinking of all the medical ways she could hit her without leaving a mark judging by the expression on her face. The girl in question was masking her annoyance with a sad pout- or attempting to at least. Nicky couldn’t stop analyzing everything about her now that he knew she would do this. But he teamed up with Seb and Viv, and they made sure that Devyn was able to enjoy the party with DJ Timmy Smalls.
And then the tone rang out.
Everyone looked around until their gazes fell on a smirking Lily, and an annoyed looking Rafi. The blonde girl stepped forward, hand on her hip as she directed that smirk straight at Devyn. Nicky saw Genevieve’s glare intensify at it as Lily spoke, “I came here with one person in mind, and at first I thought he wasn’t going to be interested.” Her smirk grew, “But then he told me to pick him. So I’m coupling up with Harry.”
Devyn whirled around to where Harry was standing next to Bill as the boy in question started walking over to the blonde, “Wow. And you just weren’t going to tell me, yeah?”
Harry scoffed, “Like you’re one to talk after what you did.”
“Pray tell, you arse. What did I do?” Devyn’s glare was almost as threatening as Genevieve’s, and Nicky clasped a hand to her shoulder as he answered.
“There’s been a rumor, Dev.” He emphasized the word as he scowled at Elladine, who had the grace to look shocked.
“A rumor, my ass!” Harry yelled, “Ella saw her do it!”
Devyn’s glare spun around to her ‘friend’, “You saw me do what exactly?”
“Pretty sure I can fill in that blank, and clear it up while I’m at it.” Rafi shook his head, arms crossing over his chest, “Elladine told Harry that she saw you kiss me. Said you were planning to have me pick you. I know, because Lily told me about their little plan.” He turned and looked Harry right in the eye, “But that never happened. She said she only wanted one person, and that she was happy with you.”
Harry’s face paled for a second before he scowled, “Yeah, sure. Of course you’d say that.”
“You’re bloody right I would! Because it’s the truth, you absolute prat.”
Devyn huffed a humorless laugh, “You know what? Fine. Good riddance. I’ve never been sure you actually liked me, all you ever talk about is winning. If Viv hadn’t chosen better by picking Seb, you’d still be flip flopping between us.” Harry opened his mouth, but Devyn got his face, poking her finger into his chest, “I only wanted one person here, and it actually wasn’t you.” Before he could say anything, she spun around to the other Islanders, “Who actually believed I did that?”
At first no one moved, but then Tai was calling people out, “Bill, Yaz, I know you both bought into that bullshit. Miki probably did too if Bill was the one that told her.”
AJ awkwardly stepped forward herself, “I didn’t really believe it, but I wasn’t sure either because you told me you weren’t sold on Harry.”
Devyn pointed her finger at AJ, “You get a pass, I can see why you’d believe it. The rest of you that fell for it, goodbye. Do not contact me on the outside.”
“G-goodbye?” Nicky sputtered as Devyn stopped in front of him on her way out.
Devyn shrugged, “Rafi said if he couldn’t pick me, he was going to walk. He knows who I want, but I can’t have him, so with half the villa willing to believe I’d go kiss someone I wasn’t with- I’d rather just follow him out. He’ll make a good friend on the outside.”
“Who did you want?” Seb asked, and Devyn scowled at the gleam in his eye.
“Like you don’t know, you little knob.”
Seb smirked, “Well, Nicky, how you feeling about your couple?”
He scoffed, “What couple?” Elladine gasped, but Nicky ignored her, “If she was willing to do that to someone she knows I care about, then I’m not sticking around. I’ll leave with these two.”
Seb clapped his hands, “Okay. If you’re both leaving, I’m just gonna say it-“
“Don’t you dare!” Viv tried to cover his mouth with her hand while everyone watched confused, but he ducked around her.
“One of you need to confess! I’m sure Rafi knows exactly what I mean.”
The actor nodded seriously, “Honestly, at this point it needs to be out in the open. Nicky settled for Elladine, Devyn settled for Harry.”
Nicky looked at his best mate, gobsmacked, “Do- do you like me?”
Devyn rolled her eyes, scowl still stuck on her face at being put on the spot. He knew she hated that. “Obviously. But I’m a sister to you so-“
“Bloody hell- I’ve never wanted to kiss my sister this much!” Seb snorted, but Nicky ignored him. “So…their operation was technically a success, but how about we head out on a date on the outside?”
Devyn’s lip twitched upward, “Dammit, Nicks, I’m trying to be pissed here.”
He shrugged, “So be pissed with me on the outside, Dev.”
“Fine.” She finally smiled, flipping Elladine off as she turned to Seb and Viv, “You two better win this. No one deserves it more.” She gave them a hug before grabbing Nicky’s hand, he immediately interlaced their fingers. “Viv, you call me on the outside. The five of us will get lunch.”
Rafi groaned, “Great, I get to fifth wheel.”
“Naw,” She smirked, “Tai, Ciaran, and AJ get to join for not being stupid about me.” He laughed with Nicky and Devyn as they moved to pack up their bags.

Season 3 is so hard to play through. Why? Rafi and Lily. The part of the season where they come in makes me so uncomfortable. The game forces your MC to be attracted to them, and how strong both Rafi and Lily come onto you and your LI makes me soooo uncomfortable. "I would never forget your name." Do me a favor and don't speak to me. At all. And you can't even have a fucking conversation with your LI. If you switch to Rafi/Lily, your LI is caught off guard (though they shouldn't be). You should be able to sit them down and tell them their behavior is unacceptable. You should be able to say to your LI afterwards "You didn't deserve this chance, but I'm giving it to you anyway. You need to gain my trust again." It feels like gaslighting when your LI tells you they were never interested in Rafi/Lily, because they clearly were. The writing doesn't leave it up for interpretation. With how strongly Rafi/Lily comes onto your LI, they SHOULD NOT be allowing it, not if they're actually committed to you. And stooooop forcing me to speak to someone pursuing me who I've made it clear I'm not interested in. GIVE ME A CHANCE TO SHUT THEM DOWN COMPLETELY. I shouldn't be forced to play nice. I don't want to play nice. I don't want to be petty and compete with Rafi/Lily for my LI's attention, I shouldn't be expected to. And at this point it's the LI that's been snubbing you or the LI that's been relentless in reminding you how horrible this arc is. You can't go for anyone else. It's bullshit.

OC Introduction
Liliana Clarke-Reyes
“Boy, you’ve really got people fooled into thinking you’re the villa sweetheart," Priya said. Lili rolled her eyes. “I never claimed to be anything of the sort. I say fuck far too often to be anyone’s sweetheart.”
MC of The Sun in My Eyes. Call her Lili. Or Lil. Or even Liliana if you're nasty. Just don't call her perfect. She hates that shit.
24 | she/her | afro-latina | scouser | bilingual | belly dancer | foster care charity worker | 7 secret tattoos | optimist | loves spicy food | swiftie | perfectionist | sweet & snarky | great with kids | bad with animals | bubble baths are a religion |
lili's mood boards
Mood boards are how I build characters. It gives me a chance to play and discover their likes and dislikes. So I have tons of them for Lili. Please note that in the story and in my head, Lili is quite a bit darker than the faceclaim I used for her. I will post seperately about that, because it was a whole THING.
Board 1: Villa Lili
In my head this is how the show depicted Lili initially. Bubbly and bright. And all of this stuff IS her, but it's not all of her.
Tumblr media
Board 2: Real Life Lili
This is Lili on the inside. Wistful, organized, emosh, and obsessed with shoes.
Tumblr media
Board 3: Lili's Home Aesthetic
I just love interior design and had fun building Lili's home aesthetic.
Tumblr media
Board 4: Lili's Fashion Sense
I always pictured her wearing mostly blacks, whites, and neutrals. With some random pops of gold/yellow and red thrown in. She loves her a one sleeve top and ripped jeans. Overall she has edgy autumn vibes. Lots of sweaters hanging off the shoulder and ankle boots clacking on the pavements. Super dark lipstick and black fingernails, always. A little tribute to her inner emo-kid.
Tumblr media
Board 5: Lili's Life in Liverpool
This might be my favorite of her boards. This is a little taste of Lili's life outside the villa. Her exes, her bestie, her siblings. And all of her tattoos. I cannot tell you what a hardship it was to spend hours looking at pictures of Harry Styles in order to find one for that album.
Tumblr media
So yeah. That's Lil.

i know s4 is kind of meh but one thing i think it does better than s3 (and even s2 i guess) is that it doesn’t just confine you to every woman once you start dating one? like in s3 if you got with aj yasmin would pick you at that recoupling even if you had better chemistry with someone else. and you’d end up with lily attempting to seduce you in the end.
and even in s2 if it got close to the end you could usually cheat with a returning lucas or henrik but if you were with marisol it would be elisa you could cheat with and only elisa.
the cool thing about s4 is you get a choice? we’ve only really had 2 confirmed for us female li but like, i was coupled with najuma and i chose “i like tom” to see what would happen and it took me on a date with tom. i do actually like cora more but it was nice to have this choice.
i’m sure i could’ve worded this better but yeah.

The Suresh Problem.
If you’re here from that reddit petition, please be aware that this post was used without my consent.
Okay, I've received yet another four or five asks in my inbox about Suresh, so I'm just going to discuss this properly, once. I'm going to put the majority of this under the cut, because it specifically addresses very triggering topics for a lot of people.
TW: SA, DV.
TL:DR; you're all getting played by Fusebox, and they wrote Suresh to be an asshole on purpose.
I really appreciate that y'all are sending me these asks. Particularly as so many of them have mentioned that they feel that my blog is a safe space for POC. I cannot express how much that means to me. Thank you. I'm doing my best.
After this post, I will not answer, acknowledge, or in any way interact with any asks that compare Suresh to Harvey Weinstein, Andrew Tate, or any of the other real-life sexual predators & abusers he's been compared to, even if it's to defend him. While I appreciate y'all bringing it to my attention, it's just exacerbating it, and I'm not giving it a platform after this post.
I am not an expert in talking about race, nor am I an expert in writing POC. I'm not a POC, nor have I ever claimed to be. I just don't believe in putting discussions like this in the too-hard basket, and pretending they doesn't exist because it's a hard conversation to have. My willingness to have these discussions is not 'bandwagoning', or at least, it's not intended to be. I don't have the world's largest platform, but I have a small soapbox and I'm going to use it properly.
I'm also going to put a disclaimer here and say that this is only an opinion, and an uninformed one at that. I don't work for Fusebox, I don't have a degree in marketing or digital engagement, but I have done some work in User Experience and my degree's partly in Cultural Anthropology, so I know a little bit about human behaviour and the way we engage with online media.
Again, not an expert. Just cynical and sick of the debate.
So here's the sitch.
They wrote Suresh to be a toxic, pushy asshole on purpose.
His behaviour, in some areas, is not great. The gaslighting, the manipulation, implying he used to trick her into sleeping with him. Many people, including myself, have been in emotionally abusive relationships with people who are like this. It's not nice. It's certainly not entertainment.
But you cannot sit there and tell me that this script did not go through multiple rounds of revisions. You think this wasn't brought up at Fusebox HQ? I can absolutely guarantee you that it was.
So why on earth would writers write him this way?
Because it gets you talking about the game.
Ever heard of the phrase 'Any publicity is good publicity'?
There are 1000+ LITG Fanfictions on Ao3. Guess which season has the fewest fanfics? Season 3. Often casually referred to as 'The Disney Season'. The only drama during that season was Ciaran/Tai/Yasmin picking MC, and/or Rafi/Lily flirting heavily with MC. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong, but overwhelmingly, it was a very sweet season with generally likeable and unique characters.
Season 2 had so, so many characters with different backstories, interests, motivations, etc. that it was hard to find someone who didn't like one of them at least a little. And people engaged so much with that content. Just based off the fanfiction numbers (because I don't have any official stats) at least 75% of the LITG FF content is for Season 2.
But here's the thing: It's far easier to make people angry than it is to make them fall in love.
What is the one thing almost everyone spent gems on during Bombshell? Telling off Juliet. It's basic engagement principle that people are going to be more engaged when they're emotionally invested in a piece of media. It's why clickbait exists. It's why internet trolls exist, for fuck's sake.
So why on earth would they bother spending the extra time in developing complex, multifaceted characters, when as a fandom, we've made it perfectly clear that we'll spend more money, more time, and more brain space into tearing apart characters we hate, rather than doing the same for characters we love?
Fusebox are a business. They do not care if the game offends you. What they do care about are those sweet, sweet advertising dollars. And if they can show a reddit sub with thousands upon thousands of eyes on it, all ranting and raving about Suresh, they can absolutely turn to an advertiser and say "Yo, look at our engagement levels!"
This is just capitalism. It's business. If they take it too far on a TV show, advertisers will start pulling out. But advertisers only pull out when there's an actual, honest-to-god backlash. And most of the advertising (in my LITG2 app at least) isn't for products or companies with a reputation. It's for other games. Meaning that, realistically, if you did want to complain to an advertiser about the game being racist, sexist, misogynistic who are you going to complain to? Apple? The fuck do they care? They haven't broken any laws?
It's specifically designed to be controversial and problematic. That is the entire point. If this kind of thing triggers you, DNI.
Fusebox do not care about individuals' experiences.
A few people will be so triggered or turned off by the content that they'll leave. But enough of us stayed, engaged, and participated in the game to make it worth their while. So Fusebox just continues to exist in this sweet space, where they just insert more and more problematic characters, leading to higher and higher engagement. As long as they don't cross any hard lines, they can do it forever.
The inherent problem with this, is that a lot of people don't know when to stop.
And this is when it starts getting really fucking sad.
Y'all are taking a guy that's specifically designed to piss you off, and deciding he's an abuser, gaslighter, manipulator, etc. There are already so many stereotypes about South Asian men being pushy, or demanding, or that they don't respect women.
I've seen so, so many instances in the reddit sub, on facebook, and even in the official Discord server of language that tars all South Asian men as being this way. People saying, and I fucking quote, "I wouldn't mind it so much if it was Eddie". (Thanks, Reddit).
Firstly, there's a good reason that it's not Eddie. And that's because, as demonstrated by the quote above, a lot of people would be far more willing to excuse this behaviour if it was coming from a pretty white boy.
So why is this?
Why do you think they made the manipulative, 'won't take no for an answer' man be from Southern Asia?
Why do you think they made Hope a sassy, determined black woman?
Why do you think they made Miki a quirky, shy, but nosy East Asian girl?
Even Lottie, who's a whiny little shit isn't from the UK.
This game is most popular in the UK. It's also popular elsewhere, but its main target audience is the UK. It's why most of the characters are from there, the script contains UK slang, etc.
It's so much easier to hate someone when they're not 'from here'.
Check out any American superhero movie. The villain is foreign. In Hollywood movies, they're British, French, Russian, Chinese, South American, Arabic, whatever. They're just foreign. Or different.
They're others.
Because it sells.
It's easier for you to team up with your mates on reddit and condemn Suresh for his behaviour than it is to do it to someone who looks like you.
But guess what?
There are people who play this game who are People of Colour.
(Shocking, I know. They enjoy playing games too!)
And whenever you buy into this bullshit that Fusebox is feeding you, whenever you pile on a character like Suresh, you are making them feel like they're not welcome here.
People of Colour are being used as a means to an end.
Instead of writing complex, multi-dimensional villains with real motivations, Fusebox are using basic clickbait to get you to engage.
And that's super fucking unfair.
I'm not telling you to do anything. I'm not telling you not to play. I'm not going to stop spending money on it. I'm certainly not going to stop.
I just want people to be aware of what they're doing.
Be aware of the fact that they're playing into your preconceived ideas of race, culture, and ethnicity.
Be aware of the fact that they are trying to you to engage at at all costs.
Be aware that your rabid fan-ness can actually spur others into a mob mentality.
Be aware of the fact that you're allowed to criticise characters. But criticise the writing. Criticise the business tactic.
Don't fall into the quicksand!
Don't let yourself make it about race. Stop letting others make it about race.
Stop engaging with it when it becomes about race.
Stop engaging when your friends compare him to Harvey Weinstein, Andrew Tate, Prince Andrew, etc. He's a character from a mobile game. They are real people who have hurt real women.
Show Fusebox you'll engage with the stuff you do like, as opposed to only engaging when it's piling on to a character.
Get rabid about the drama, not about the character.
And look, I'm writing this out in a long, one-shot rant, so I might've completely rambled, contradicted myself, or said something completely wrong, so please forgive me if I have.
I just hope this helped someone see it for what it is.
MARKETING.
So in conclusion:
Do: Make memes about Suresh not apologising.
Do: Hate him for cheating.
Do: Push him in the pool.
Do not: Compare him to a real life sex offender
Do not: Make it about race
Do not: Think for a second that Fusebox don't know exactly what they're doing.

Previous Thoughts Go Bi Bi Bi
Lily x MC
Cigarette pursed in her lips, Frankie looked up at the neon streaming around the street as she patted down her pockets for a light. It was a fun night- or it was supposed to be. Why couldn’t she shake this lead feeling in her gut?
“Got you, babes,” Frankie turned to the light instinctively, letting it burn a cherry into the end of her smoke before she pulled back to fully see her best mate.
“Thanks,” she responded gruffer than she really needed to be. Sure, Lily was here to celebrate a proper birthday for Frankie, but that didn’t give her the right to be annoyed her best mate was flirting with some bird at the bar.
Lily pursed her lips, looking her over- Frankie had always been jealous of how pretty she was even when she made faces. “You been off all night. You sure you’re okay?”
“Surprised you noticed.” Frankie huffed, maybe she’d already drank too many pints, she wasn’t usually so short with her.
Lily’s eyebrows raised, hand popping onto her hip as she jutted it out, “Excuse me? What’s that supposed to mean?”
Frankie rolled her eyes, taking a long puff, “Means you’ve been pretty distracted tonight.”
Lily looked confused by Frankie’s tone, but so was Frankie. She never reacted like this with Lily, no matter what. Sure, she didn’t always like the people she dated, and she could usually tell with a glance someone wasn’t the right fit- but that was just being a good friend! Frankie was supposed to think that no one would be good enough for her best mate, supposed to think those posers didn’t deserve her time. She was supposed to think that her best mate was a sunflower in a field of dandelions. Wasn’t she? Sure, maybe there were people she didn’t give much of a chance, but they would never appreciate Lily the way she did and they would never love her like she would and-
Suddenly the lead feeling in her gut had a name.
Frankie stomped her smoke out, forcing a laugh, “You know, I think you’re right. Something… something has me feeling funny. I should get home.”
“It’s late, let me walk you-“
“No, no,” Frankie waved her off, glancing inside to where the rest of their mates were still dancing and drinking, “You stay. Have a good time.”
Frankie fled before Lily could stop her.
The rest of that weekend, she didn’t answer the texts she knew were piling up, didn’t answer when they phoned her and she let it ring and ring. Avoidance wasn’t the answer, she knew that, but she couldn’t come up with a different solution.
How do you tell someone that you just realized you’ve been in love with them?
How do you tell everyone you know that you aren’t straight like you and everyone else thought?
Fishing her phone out from the cocoon of blankets she’d buried herself in, Frankie called the only person she could think of.
Twenty minutes, her flat door was being thrown open, a far too energetic blonde bouncing her way in, “Just an FYI, Lils is very upset that she wasn’t allowed to tag along.” AJ kicked her shoes off, hurtling down the hall and into bed with her, “Wanna tell me what’s going on?”
“I-“ Frankie felt tears prick at her eyes, unsure why they appeared. It wasn’t like AJ wouldn’t accept her, she had just come out as a lesbian for crying out loud! But still the words got stuck.
AJ’s overly excited demeanor shifted, sincerity taking over, “Whoa, hey, babe, you okay?”
Frankie nodded, choking on her sobs, “I- I’m just- I’m in love with Lily.” She squeezed her eyes shut, that wasn’t the announcement she was trying to make! Finally she forced it out, “I think I’m bisexual.”
“Oh,” AJ blinked, “Okay. Wow. Um. Well, thank you. For trusting me. I’m proud of you.”
Frankie rolled her eyes, tossing a pillow at the blonde that her stupid athlete reflexes let her catch, “I know you don’t actually care. I need you to tell me what I should do.”
AJ pursed her lips, concentrating, “I can’t tell you what to do.” She answered honestly, “No one can tell you what’s the right or wrong thing to do here. You need to decide that for yourself. I will say- no one belongs in the closet. But if you feel safer in there, I’ll guard the door for you. And I can tell you Lily would take it… more than fine.”
Frankie cracked a small smile, “Since when did you become so wise?”
AJ snickered, throwing the pillow back at her, “Leave it, you scrub!” Frankie caught it, letting her smile fade as she picked at the threads on it, “Do you wanna talk it out?”
She shook her head… but then she nodded.
Facing Lily was an entirely different beast than coming out to AJ. They always joked that she was the spitting image of Scarlett Johansson, and if she was then Frankie was more like Emma Stone. She was pretty, funny, sure- but no one stopped an stared the way they did for Lily.
Frankie had always noticed, somewhere in the back of her mind, but as she watched Lily walk into the coffee shoppe to meet her today, she finally fully registered how much it actually was. Every man in the shoppe eyed her with a mix of awe and lust, the women with a sense of envy or interest. Her own gaze couldn’t be torn away as she watched the smile bloom across her lips when she caught sight of her, “Frankie!” She hurried over, gingerly taking the paper cup she was offered to take a sip, “You got my favorite.”
Her smile was soft, Frankie couldn’t understand how it was directed at her. Lily had been her best mate for as long as she could remember having one, Frankie had learned all of her likes and dislikes, her goals, but especially her expressions. This was a look that Lily often reserved for when she…
No, Frankie had to be reading her wrong, right? There was no way Lily could-
“You gonna tell me what’s running through your head or am I gonna have to guess like when we were in secondary?”
“Just thinking about… love.” She settled on.
Lily snorted, amused glimmer in her gaze, her attention focused solely on Frankie like she didn’t even notice the scattered stares she was still receiving, “Any particular reason or just as a general concept?”
“A very particular reason, yeah,” she laughed nervously, fingertips fiddling with the lid of her cup, “I- uh, well I guess I wanted to do this here so you wouldn’t feel compelled to stay or need to tell me to leave at your flat.”
Lily’s brow furrowed, “I’d never make you leave.”
Frankie gave her an anxious smile, “Keep that in mind, yeah?” She watched her nod, worry still swimming in her eyes, before Frankie allowed herself a deep breath, “Best to just rip off the plaster, right? I- uh, I have feelings for you.”
Lily’s face went through a range of emotions Frankie recognized- confusion, understanding, shock, before landing on tentative joy, “Really?”
Frankie shrugged, glancing up at the ceiling, “I don’t know how or when. But I spent all weekend talking AJ’s ear off over it. I know it’s real.”
Lily hopped to her feet- maybe Frankie had read her wrong. This was where she said they couldn’t be friends anymore. Where she said Frankie betrayed their friendship. Where-
“Come on.”
Frankie blinked, seeing Lily’s hand dangling in the air toward her, a bright smile on her face, “What?”
Lily giggled, “As ordinary of a destination as it is, I refuse to let our first date be a coffee shoppe. Come on!”
Frankie always knew Lily was her best mate.
But sprinting through England streets as they dodged pedestrians in a weirdly unspoken game of tag as they tried various food carts for a first date?
Well, now she thought maybe they were meant to be, too.
And to think she wouldn’t have it if she continued to believe she was straight.
