are the writers actually applying not only the “psychic rapport using a very particular phrase to describe it” plot point but also the “they get separated in a way that makes them think the other dead, and the non-telepath tries to move on by dating someone else, which doesn’t end up being serious but helps him open up as a person” plot point to Erik and Charles?

because those are plot points from the original Dark Phoenix saga. those are from Scott and Jean’s storylines. those are originally explicitly romantic plot points.

like. the Chris Claremont run is what made the X-Men what they are today, and the Dark Phoenix saga is often considered the crown jewel of that run. I’m not saying this is absolutely definitely intentional, but this is a staff that choreographed Cyclops’ fights after how he plays in Marvel vs Capcom. they know their shit, X-Men wise.
