We need to talk about Wai

I’m on my Bad Buddy rewatch (I didn’t expect to be watching again a month after seeing the show for the first time, but we’re in a post-Only Friends/ IFYLITA/ Kiseki timeline and I needed the cuteness that is PatPran. They’re so wonderful together. They’re pals but they’re lovers but they bicker. They’re just great. I digress).

I know it’s been said for like two years now, but I’m new here and I’m so annoyed and on a second run through I feel I need to scream it. But I can’t, so it’s going in this post:

Wai is a dick.

I loathe him. He was awful before, but watching this happen in ep 9 for the second time:

Well, I wanted to throw things.

He’s such a bitter little gremlin before this point. They do a brilliant job establishing the friendships in this show. You can see they all look out for each other. Except for Wai. I don’t get Pran’s friendship with Wai. There will be Wai defenders out there, I’m sure of it. But I just think he’s terrible. He takes and takes from Pran, and this is set up from the very first few moments of ep 1.

His anger towards Pat becomes so childish that by the time they’re at the eco beach, it’s beyond frustrating. And yeah, I get it. Wai is Tybalt. He’s the angry, slightly unhinged friend who won’t let his hatred drop.

But here’s the thing. When he outs them in ep 9, it’s too much.

And then PRAN APOLOGISES. I want to shake him. And I want to slap Wai for letting his friend apologise. Wai should be begging forgiveness for his vindictiveness. But no. We get this:

What? (quick aside here: look at the lines! The dividing lines between them! Very Tee Bundit!)

No, sweetie, you already are an asshole.

I’m mad that it took Pat taking a bullet for Wai (I have thoughts about that gun storyline. So many thoughts. Anyway) for him to stop being awful. But I’m beyond frustrated that no one pointed out that outing the man who is meant to be your best friend is fucking awful.

And I don’t think Wai deserves Korn as a pal either. Korn is great. Love him. He’s a great, if a bit flawed (because of course he’s flawed, they all are. They’re 20-something uni students), friend to Pat. But Pran? Pran needs a better bestie.

PS Have saved @waitmyturtles BB meta so that I can read it when I’m feeling less murderous. A little treat for not shouting at Wai every time he appears onscreen!

yes I read both books and god, they're good.

Even tho it is for grade levels through 3-7 it was fun to read.
