Review  “ Little Fires Everywhere” Episode 1&2

Quarantine Binge-watching, eating, cleaning, sleeping, shower, etc. is a new level.  When it comes to binge-watching something new, the number one rule is to give it 3 episodes.  I learned that with Game of Thrones.  So what better magical duo than Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon.  I had no expectations with "Little Fires Everywhere", but I was intrigued.  

First episode, I'm already confused and asking too many questions.  Single black mother with minimal wage job and highly intelligent daughter.  Ambitious with unlimited resource white mother.  The job, the family, house, and money.  So far the best thing is the setting, Midwest in the '90s.

So who started the fire?

Shaker Heights, OH in the '90s is quite progressive.  Interracial schools and couples.  You'd almost forget that in the 90's we had the Rodney King riots, OJ Simpson trail and the killing of Latasha Harlins.  Mia doesn't seem to forget though, she's very much "woke", a black woman in a “ '90s kinda world”.  An artist on the run.  We leave episode one with Mia being asked to be the Richardson help.  Mia notices her daughter Pearl Warren, becoming close to the Richardsons, so she takes the job.  

Izzy Richardson, my my my does she remind me of me.  However, I could never do or say not even one thing that she was able to do, but I wanted to.  I love how self-aware she is and doesn't care about the opinions of others.  Due to her ability to walk to the beat of her own drum, I'm not surprised that on the first day of school she gets picked on.   Moody Richardson captures my heart because of his heart.  Bill Richardson seems like he fulfilled a piece in Elena's puzzle.  He shows up as a righteous man doing what he's supposed to do, taking care of his family.  Trip Richardson......typical.  A piss poor rendition of Zack Morris.  Lexi Richardson....let it be known that I'm on this bitch's ass and don't like the hoe.  And of course, her boyfriend is black.  

Ellen Degeneres was poppin in the '90s?

Due to Mia's suspicious behavior and lack of references, Elena uses her white   "unlimited resources" to get the scoop on Mia.  And again with assisting Pearl with getting her classes changed.  Elena pulls that emphasis "I have black friends" card and boasts and brags about how her family marched with MLK.  She takes pride that she's helping a "black".  You can tell based on how much she talks about Mia that she really feels good about the "charity" that she's doing for her.  Meanwhile, the cards in her house are falling like dominos.  We thought we came for poker but quite as kept its Jinga.  The struggle to keep up with appearances is such an exhausting task, and its wearing Elena down.  

Watching Pearl idolize Elena, is a little disheartening.  Her mother doing the best she can seems to fall to the waist side.  Take her class placement, Mia advised her daughter to persevere and get it done.  However, with a flick of a wrist Elena was able to make it all better.

The Richardson's have so many privileges that their own hardships don't even seem to overwhelm themselves.  Lack of hardships is nothing to be upset about, but I can understand the resentment for having to defend that.  However, hardships aren't limited to what you have and are far deeper than surface-level basics needs.  Not having food or shelter is one thing.  But what good is a roof over your head and food in the fridge if your father is beating your mother or your uncle is molesting you.  Lexi struggles with coming up with her college essay to Yale describing a hardship.  Yet, because of her need to want to put on appearance, she wasn't able to really look beyond the surface and discover that she too has a hardship to share.

Mia makes a friend at work, Bebe Chow.  We now have an African American, Chinese and Caucasian.  All different nationalities yet one thing in common, motherhood.  Mia also makes a friend at her second job, with Elena and Izzy.  Mia clings to disfunction and problematic issues (fires?).  But why?  She inserts herself and crusades for Elena defending her amongst her friends.  She finds her self crusading for Bebe giving up her baby.  And even Izzy for being the black sheep.  But why?  We get a glimmer of hope with Elena and Mia talking and exposing their insecurities about motherhood.  For a moment they seemed like friends.  For a moment.  We learn that Elena is so conservative that even after four kids, she's never seen her own vagina.  She also admires Mia and Pearl's close relationship and feels hated by Izzy.  Mia is sexual fluid free spirt who believes in sleeping with whoever she wants, whenever she wants.  But her relationship with her daughter may not be all that it seems.

So who started the fire?

A white woman with a picture perfect family and unlimited resources.  A black woman working 3 jobs as a single mother.  A Chinese immigrant struggling and making sacrifices.
