C-Novel Reading List
Are you new to the world of Chinese web-novels and don’t know where to start?
Maybe you’ve read a few and don’t know what to read next?
Do you wish there was place that had an interactive collection of c-novels that you can filter by genre and translation status, has information about the novels and links of where to read them?
May I present.... Shen-Daozhang’s C-Novel Reading List
I’m a librarian irl, and I love making lists of media. I also love Chinese web novels, and friends often ask me for recommendations, or for help finding where to read a novel. I also wanted a place for myself where I could remember what I thought about novels that I’d read. But I wanted it to be more than just a long text post list with links. I wanted it to be pretty! And I wanted it to be filterable by genre and translation status, and some other factors too.
So, to that end, I decided to make a interactive libguide list here on tumblr. I then decided that instead of just keeping it to myself and my friends after putting in all that work, it might be a resource that’s helpful to other people! Hence this post!
In addition to the list being filterable by genre, translation status, and whether it’s a good first read or one of my personal favorites, in each novel's description you can easily see how many chapters it is, its genre, if there are any adaptations, a quick summary- and, if I've read it, my thoughts. I have also included a link of where to read it, as well as links to my own tumblr posts and reblogs about the book, because if you're like me you're influenced to pick up a novel by seeing what it seems like through tumblr posts.
This is a perpetual WIP, so if you find any broken links, or think there’s a novel I should include, please let me know!
As of right now, the list includes (in no particular order) :
Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong - Scum Villain's Self-Saving System Mo Dao Zushi - Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Tian Guan Ci Fu - Heaven Official’s Blessing Erha He De Bai Mao Shizun - Husky and His White Cat Shizun Yuwu - Remnants of Filth Bing An Ben - Casefile Compendium Qian Qiu - Thousand Autumns Wushuang - Peerless Chenghua Shisi Nian - Fourteenth Year of the Chenghua Emperor / Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty Qi Ye - Lord Seventh Tian Ya Ke - Faraway Wanderers Sha Po Lang Lie Huo Jiao Chuo - Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire Can Ci Pin - The Defectives / Imperfections Liu Yao - The Revitalization of Fu Yao Sect Zhenhuan - Guardian You Fei - Bandits / Legend of Fei Mo Du - Silent Reading Tai Sui Guomen - Through the Strait Gate Wu Wuran, Wu Gonghai - No Pollution, No Public Harm Tong Qian Kan Shi - Copper Coins Hei Yueguang Na Wen BE Ju Ben - Black Moonlight Holds the BE Script Huo Shou Zui - Living to Suffer Zhang Xiang Shou - Til Death Do Us Part Luan Shi Wei Wang - To Rule in a Turbulent World Dinghai Fusheng Lu - Epic of Divinity Light Tianbao Fuyao Lu - Legend of Exorcism Xiao Mogu - Little Mushroom Xiang Mi Chenchen Jin Ru Shuang - Heavy Sweetness, Ash Like Frost / Ashes of Love Lang Ya Bang - Nirvana in Fire Huang Jin Tai - Golden Stage / Golden Terrance Jiang Ye - Eternal Night / Nightfall / Ever Night Wuchang Jie - Impermanence Calamity Nan Chan Qing Yu Nian - Celebrating the Remaining Years / Joy of Life Fu Yao Huanghuo - Empress Fuyao / Legend of Fuyao Huang Quan - Rise of Phoenixes  Jing Wei Qing Shang - Clear and Muddy Loss of Love Nujiangjun He Zhang Gongzhu - Female General and Eldest Princess Bin bian bushi haitang hong - Winter Begonia Duzhu You Bing - The Governor's Illness/There’s Something Wrong With the Governor
Want the same thing with c-dramas? Good news I have one for that too!

Summary:
The story behind the pilot episode of Journey to the West "The Kingdom of the Black Chicken" If you were to ask which episode of "Journey to the West" was aired first, you would definitely say without hesitation that it was when the Monkey King first came out. In fact, the real first episode was "The Kingdom of the Black Chicken". This was an episode of trial filming in July 1982. The episode was broadcast on CCTV on October 1, 1982. It is said that after the broadcast, the response from the audience was still great, but the crew of Journey to the West thought it was very unsuccessful.
In the 1986 version of Journey to the West, Tang Monk wore a Five Buddha crown and a brocade cassock. However, during the trial filming in 1982, the crew in Yangzhou had not yet finished making the Five Buddha crown and cassock. Therefore, they could only prepare them for Tang Monk. He bought a set of casual clothes, which was an ordinary monk's hat and robe. At the beginning of the trial, Tang Monk walked into Baolin Temple wearing this outfit. The real and fake Tang Monk: played by Wang Yue, played by Chi Chongrui in the remake.
The deleted section of "Chenjiazhuang" in Episode 25 "Bo Sheng Bliss" At that time (1982-1988), due to lack of funds, the crew did not film five episodes of the story including "Dangerous Crossing of Tongtian River", but the episode of "Tongtian River" has many connections with the last episode:
Among them, the specific plot of "Life Saving Temple" is: the master and apprentice dried the scriptures and came to a temple, and found that the statues of their four masters and apprentices were enshrined inside. It turned out that this was Chenjiazhuang's gratitude to Master Tang Monk for fighting the carp spirit in Tongtian River. , the "Lifesaving Temple" built to save a pair of children of the Chen family enshrines incense. The four masters and apprentices were about to leave when they met Chen Qing and his wife who came to collect incense. Under the warm invitation, Master Tang and his disciples came to Chenjiazhuang to have an evening meal. The people in the village were very grateful to the four masters and disciples. In the evening, Master Tang and his disciples were in a hurry and did not want to disturb the people of Chenjiazhuang too much, so they left quietly.
The first eleven episodes were broadcast on February 3, 1984, "The Plan to Harvest Zhu Bajie" and "Three Strikes of Bone Demons", and the first eleven episodes were broadcast during the Spring Festival in 1986. The ending song "Dare to Ask Where is the Way" was sung by Zhang Baomo. In 1986, he completed the filming of "Lotus Cave", "Destroying Demons and Black Roosters" (remake), "Battle of the Red Boy", "Battle of Three Monsters", "Qu Jing Daughter's Kingdom", "Three-Tune Banana Fan", "Sweeping" There are nine episodes in "The Pagoda Discriminates Strange Injustices", "Wandering into Xiaoleiyin" and "Sun Houqiao Practices Medicine". In 1987, five episodes of "Falling into the Pansi Cave", "Four Explorations into the Bottomless Cave", "Jade Continent", "Tianzhu Collecting the Jade Rabbit" and "Bossing into Paradise" were completed. Starting from February 1, 1988, all the first 25 episodes were broadcast.

★ ⸻ heylo, this is red (25+, they/them) bringing you my lovely tangerine, liu mingyue! been a hot minute since i've did tumblr rp so please bear with me ! read more of mingyue under the cuts. do like this post and i'll reach out !
profile / plots / points / playlist
basics !
liu mingyue is from beijing, china! you can call him mingyue, mingyu for those who want to address his korean name, mingming for those who cannot pronounce his name, and xiao ming or ah yue for those REALLY close.
back in beijing, he was a child actor for a few years. nothing big scale, mostly him just taking roles of child versions of male leads.
tw / death. his family consists of his father, his mother (who is deceased) and his younger sister of five years. mingyue is quite the momma's boy and the reason of him liking singing and wanting to be an idol. he would sing in his mother's last days and when she told him he was meant for the world to listen, he took it quite to heart to show the world his singing. or wants to.
he came to seoul around the age of fifteen after joining this global audition program in beijing. trained under this no name entertainment for a good three years and did not make it to the debut line up. left ultimately because the company wasn't going to debut any other people for the next few years.
he didn't go back to beijing though, he continued his education in an international school and eventually in snu under accounting and business management. he's rather privileged thanks to his father being a huge business back in beijing and him studying his major now is a safety net more so if he never gets to debut
here are some things that i would like for mingyue to be plotted with if given the chance or interest !!
best friends! someone whom maybe he met during his time in the international school or student exchange program?? cross school events??? or even in snu
enemy or sorts? someone who calls out his privileges even if he never really brags about it. he really likes shopping for clothing on coupang or streets of hongdae or myeongdong tbh but your muse sees thru his richness or wtv
roommate/housemate??? i believe he's staying on campus ground but between that to the company, its some distance. so he'd like staying somewhere in the middle
exes!! just one, and someone he agreed to date in his earlier years of staying in seoul where he was a dumb teenager (say they dated when they were around 16-18). lots of language barrier and misunderstandings. even broke up over the dumbest reason??
people who make him feel like home? fellow mandarin speaker trainees. where other people may be celebrating chuseok but they can have their little hot pot session and mahjongs. silly banters over formalities usage because saying ge and jie is better than hyung and noona
vocal rivals,, fave duet partner. people who just constantly help mingyue be a better singer whether they are meant to be friends or rivals in the practice room
a muse perhaps? someone he's infatuated with and writes songs about but never publicly addresses his infatuation. maybe your muse eventually finds his scrapped and crumbled writings??

Cutie Ning Yingying and Ming Fan go to bars together (it was NOT Ming Fan's idea to have his crush come with him to bars, but how could he say no to her.....what if someone TRIED something with her when she went by herself??? [Ning Yingying does not know he thinks this]) and usually they just hang out and drink. Sometimes they vibe at places with live talent. Other times they meet up with friends. But outside of two times when Ning Yingying caught someone's eye, there's no hooking up. Until the hottest girl Ming Fan has ever seen is sliding up to his usual spot beside Ning Yingying.
Ning Yingying waves him over, giggling. "This is Mingyan-jie!!! I met her last week when you had to cancel.”
And Ming Fan can tell this Mingyan-jie is trying to get into Ning Yingying's panties. He is trying to get into her panties; he can see the signs. But the two girls are very affectionate–which, girls are more than boys. But they are very touchy. And Ning Yingying is very much in this Mingyan-jie's bubble in a way Ning Yingying isn't to anyone. Ming Fan feels like a third wheel for a second. It gets better as the night goes on, though. As Mingyan-jie warms up to him. But he can tell that mingyan-jie sees that he wants Ning Yingying.
It....turns into a game, almost.
Almost, because Ming Fan would never think of Ning Yingying as a game. But they crowd her at the bar. Every time they met up, touching her more. Trying to see who Ning Yingying likes more. Ning Yingying is a touchy drunk; she's spilling into each of their laps, happy that they get along so well! She loves them! And both Liu Mingyan and Ming Fan are just horny grip as she obliviously bounces on their cocks. She's too drunk to notice how they react, and they're too sober to do anything stupid. The both of them had wordless agreed to simply nurse drinks while Ning Yingying has all the drunk fun. Who Ning Yingying gets to make sure she gets home safe alternates, but Ming Fan has come to trust Liu Mingyan to get Ning Yingying home untouched. He can see the same care reflected in her, wrapped around the thirst.
Things change one night when Ning Yingying, sloppy drunk, wiggles on Ming Fan’s lap. She leans over to grab Mingyan-jie, and she plants a wet kiss on her. Ming Fan and Liu Mingyan freeze, eyes wide. Ning Yingying pouts at them, still wiggling. It's a big task to try to reason with a Ning Yingying that does NOT want to be reasoned with, but she's drunk. Ming Fan lifts her off his lap while Liu Mingyan untangles her arms from around her neck.
They can....they can talk when she's sober. They'll take her home, and, if they need to, they can forget it ever happened. Ning Yingying bursts into tears. Ming Fan and Liu Mingyan, panicked, look at each other. Ning Yingying ends up not being dropped off at home alone. She cries her way into Ming Fan and Liu Mingyan pushed together on her couch because they would not cave to share Ning Yingying's bed while she's trying to kiss on them.
And, well. The couch is small. They both can feel each other's guilty erections. Ming Fan and Liu Mingyan pretend they can't, but if they cuddle that's their business. Tomorrow is another day, and if they feel both scared and hopeful, well. They know at least their feelings are reflected by each other.

I was always a little confused that some students made fun of the rival sect just because they had "monster" students. I never quite understood if it was because these students had committed crimes or bad acts but were still accepted as students, or if it was because they were cultivated Yaoguais? one of the immortals was an immortal crane, so why did they make fun? or were they just making fun of the appearance? or is it like a case of discrimination against yaoguais?
Honestly, I think it is a mix of both. On one hand, the Jie Sect did have some unsavory members like Lv Yue the plague god and Ma Yuan the man-eater, and when Patriach Tongtian and Yuanshi Tianzun were facing off before the Immortal Killing Formation, that was what Yuanshi Tianzun focused on: that his Jie Sect disciples were acting unruly and strong-arming people and holding onto grudges as a result of his indiscriminate admission (Cha. 77).
On the other hand, when their opponents mocked them, the admission of cultivated beasts did seem to be brought up:
First was the shit-talk Guangcheng Zi allegedly made, where he said that "Whether horned or furred, wet-born or egg-born, [they] all mingled as one crowd"(不分披毛带角之人,湿生卵化之辈,皆可同群共处).
Second, during the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation arc, after the three yaoguai disciples of the Jie Sect was subdued and became mounts of Wenshu, Puxian and Cihang(FSYY's Daoist-ized version of Bodhisattva Manjusri, Samantabhadra and Guanyin), Lao Zi ordered Wenshu to take the azure lion right in front of Patriarch Tongtian and was like "With such creatures under your sect, how could you still act so high-and-mighty? What a joke!" (Cha. 83)
So personally, I did think the Chan Sect was at least a little prejudiced against yaoguais.
As for the White Crane Boy: he was never explicitly stated to be a cultivated crane in the novel, unlike members of the Jie Sect who were yaoguais, though he did transform into a white crane to snatch Shen Gongbao's head away(Cha. 37).
Everything else after this is context and theories, so take it with a grain of salt.
If you read Gui Zhizhong's translation of FSYY, the introduction stated that the Chan-Jie conflict was supposed to mirror the historical conflict between Quanzhen and Zhengyi Sects in the Ming dynasty, a theory that some scholars, like Liu Cunren, subscribed to.
However, I do not subscribe to that theory personally. Rather, my take is a blend of Li Yihui's hypothesis about the origin of the names "Chan" and "Jie"(《封神演义》考论), and Meulenbeld's book, "Demonic Warfare: Daoism, Territorial Networks, and the History of a Ming Novel".
Basically, the former said that Chan came from 阐扬正教("Promote the True/Righteous Religion"), and Jie, 海外有截, a line from the Book of Poems(诗经) that was taken literally as "there was a Jie Sect overseas".
The latter pointed out the similarity between FSYY's overall narrative of "deification through death" and the Daoist ritual of sublimation + the integration of local deities into organized Daoism; specifically, "sublimation" is meant to cleanse and transform orphaned and vengeful spirits, and oftentimes, the Thunder Ritualist school would subdue local spirits of folk worship——yaoguais, ghosts, etc. and make them into subordinates.
So what does all this mean? Well, through this lens, the Chan Sect is less a mirror of any particular sects, and more an idea of "orthodox/proper Daoism", while the Jie represents "unorthodox/heretical Daoism": the incredibly diverse Chinese folk religions where the strange, the demonic and the marginal were often venerated alongside popular mainstream gods.
As such, the Chan Sect's distaste for the Jie Sect's indiscriminate admission of disciples might be a reflection of how organized Daoist sects + state religion saw folk beliefs. Yet, at the same time, the solution wasn't to wipe them out(you can't), but to subdue, transform, and integrate local gods into their temple networks and pantheons.
Thus, almost everyone who died in the War of Investiture got deified regardless of sect allegiance or species(at least in the version I'm reading, the list of names in Cha.99 differ depending on editions), and Patriarch Tongtian, despite his multiple defeat, wasn't punished by his and Yuanshi Tianzun's mutual master, Hongjun.

Lian only gains the generational character Ming ( 明 ) and becomes Minglian (明 濂) in no traumatic backstory AUs (including Modern AUs) because it takes a long time for her grandparents to come around. Even though they allowed the younger kids to have the generational character, they withheld it from Lian to prove a point to Lian’s parents.

Housewarming
"Alcohol acquired," Ning Yingying shouted from the doorway to their home.
Their home. She hadn't gotten used to that concept yet. Each time she thought of how they owned this place, together, sent such a thrill through her it was hard to sit still.
No more cramming them all into one apartment. No more "come to my place, let's hang out at Ming-jie's place". No more needing a thing but it was at a different apartment.
From the bedroom, Liu Mingyan said, "Put it in the kitchen and come get ready."
"Okay, be right there, Ming-jie!"
Ning Yingying swung the bags of alcohol, dancing on her way to the kitchen. She shook her hips and bopped her head, hummed along to the giddy song in her heart while unloading the goods. With the addition of the small glasses, she arranged her bounty of baijiu into an inviting display.
Between the three of them, half the queer women in the city would be coming for their housewarming party. And if Sha Hualing has her way, none of them would leave sober.
"We'll all sleep together in a big gay pile on the floor of our spacious living room," Sha Hualing has said, flopping on the floor to demonstrate.
"Isn't that what we do in our bed every night?" Ning Yingying said, joining her. Their cuddling had been interrupted by Liu Mingyan's shadow falling on them.
"Up you two, we still have furniture to move."
Ning Yingying giggled to herself remembering how they successfully negotiated a five minute cuddle break before she hauled them bodily from the floor. No easy feat for two big girls.
But Liu Ming-jie was very strong.
A fact accentuated by the backless lilac dress she wore when Ning Yingying entered the bedroom. She had her arms crossed, evaluating Sha Hualing's outfit, her back muscles shifting temptingly as she moved.
Sha Hualing sprang into a pose. All her jewelry twinkled pleasantly, glinting off the overhead light.
"What do you think?"
"I say it's too much," Liu Mingyan said.
Sha Hualing pulled a face at her. "Not you! Yingying, you like it yeah?"
Ning Yingying did indeed like it. The 'dress'—and that was a very generous term for it—consisted of several semi-sheer red sashes crisscrossed for some semblance of decency. They hugged her round figure snugly. Under the right light, you could probably glimpse her nipples. Or more.
It went without asking that Sha Hualing wasn't wearing anything underneath.
"That dress," Ning Yingying started, hands outlining her curves in the air, "I'd be too distracted to be a good host. I'm half-tempted to message all our friends to stay home."
Sha Hualing stamped her foot. "But I want to be slutty tonight! I want to be the center of attention in our house."
"With how you are when you drink, that won't be a problem," Liu Mingyan said.
"No I'm serious. We fought so hard to get this house. We should be wild and unhinged, drink too much and get handsy with all our friends.”
Liu Mingyan cradled Sha Hualing’s chin. “You do that anyway.” “Ming-jie.” Sha Hualing whined, stressing the last syllable.
“Hush.” Liu Mingyan squished her plump cheeks and kissed her. “I understand. Wear the dress.”
“Now that that’s settled, can you two help me pick an outfit?” Ning Yingying asked sweetly, arms spread, the invitation clear.
Sha Hualing squealed at the chance to play dress up, plunging into their closet and carelessly tossing out options.
“Oh I forgot to say earlier”—Liu Mingyan said, undoing the buttons of Ning Yingying’s shirt and pointedly ignoring the mess Sha Hualing made—“welcome home.”
Ning Yingying smiled, warmth spread through her to the tips of her fingers and toes, stretching up for Liu Mingyan’s forehead kiss.
“It’s good to be home.”
