‘the truth is out there... but so are lies’ is honestly, to me, the most impactful moment of the entire x files series, and definitely the most impactful in terms of the quest. because mulder wants to believe so badly - he’d trust anyone, listen to anyone, follow any lead - though ‘you make me a whole person’ is a romantic overture, it also represents how mulder is only half of the investigative team. he wants the truth by searching for the truth. scully, on the other hand, tries to find the truth by searching for the lie. the lies that mulder has been told, the lies of everyone who isn’t mulder, the one person she trusts. the government’s lies. diana’s lies. and the way he stops, listens to her, and says ‘thank you’ before doing what he’s going to do anyways? i think you could read that response as flippant, but to me it’s genuine. he says thank you because he’s not going to change. his stubbornness and willingness to believe in spite of everything and everyone against him is his best and worst trait. he’s going to do what he does, especially this early in the series, no matter what scully says. but he’s going to listen. he’s going to thank her for looking for deception, because it’s not just discovering the truth that will move them forward - it’s also discovering the lies. 

narratively, i love that scully says this in s1. i think this is something that it takes the whole original series to really sink in for mulder. that the more they search, the more murky things are instead of clearer. you can sink your entire life into this impenetrable mask of truths and lies. but the truths and lies out there might be bigger but will never be as meaningful, as mulder finally realizes in s8, as the truth they both know. anyways tldr frank spotniz was right

i've always thought riven got unnecessary hate for the scene in which he storms off and announces he's going to transfer to another squad in season one. naturally, i thought i'd chime in with my two cents that no one asked for.

first of all, it is important to understand what led to his confrontational demeanor. his hostility did not stem from him being an inherently 'shitty' person or just because he had lost the race. before the race even began, riven had a pot of water dumped on him (which was more or less warranted) after which he was given a faulty helmet that resulted in his loss in the race. now, we as viewers, are aware that bloom was tricked into giving riven the helmet as an apology gift, but riven doesn't know that. given the past humiliation and his lack of familiarity with bloom, it is understandable that riven finds it reasonable to question her motives. to riven, it makes more sense that bloom must have tried to sabotage his race just so that sky could win. which, yes, sky did somehow end up winning by default.

what ultimately served as the breaking point was sky agreeing with bloom (a girl sky barely knew at the time) and taking her side over his. on some level, riven obviously felt betrayed because he's known sky longer. again, viewers know sky and others were only trying to understand the situation and not take any sides. here, riven could have shown maturity by pausing and talking things out, but by this point, he starts perceiving everything as a personal attack since no one is offering him any backing because no one (minus bloom) knew what had exactly happened. it's a bit of a tricky situation for everyone involved.

to be clear, i'm not saying riven was innocent – because he wasn’t; he kept toying with the line between bantering and being arrogant until he took it too far and provoked bloom – but to call him mean-spirited or hateful without understanding the context is ridiculous.

The first time he met the man was a night as unremarkable as any other—he got there as the lights were starting to dim, neon signs giving the streets an otherworldly glow. He supposed they were pretty in their own way, clustered thick enough you could scarcely see the sky. Slipping through the door, he nodded to the bartender, and received a curl of his shoulder in return. He was already busy wiping down glasses, a stained towel in hand, motion routine, a furrow on his brow.  Rolling his sleeves up, he leaned against the bar, murmur neatly drowned out by the music. “Need help?” And then seeing the preoccupied expression, “anything wrong?” There’s a moment of hesitation, deliberation as he glances at the door. “Boss is in tonight. Said not to bother him.” Ah. He’d never met the man, but he’d heard rumors. Nothing concrete, just whispers that tailed him stubbornly.

Nor ones that come without a cost—sweetening the blow for something worse, or a carefully concocted tool with which to disassemble. There’s still uncertainty, carefully skirting broken edges, feeling for the next one tentatively, but they make it work as best they can.  “You’re beautiful you know.”

The Spider and the Fly--an series of drabbles focused on Hiro's early years in the claws (I really do want to write more of these, especially now that my current writing project just wrapped up)

He’d almost have enjoyed parts of it, feeling like he was doing something better, or at least what passes for it, if it hadn’t been for the clients. Sometimes the Corpos made themselves known, if they felt like slumming it—somewhere they didn’t have to be concerned about being seen. Obnoxious as they were, loud—voices drunken and crass, at least they were too taken in by the lights, the slot machines and the girls to really do much else. They threw money around like they didn’t know what to do with it, and he wasn’t fooling himself into thinking it was generosity but he didn’t care. Eddies were eddies.
