Have you ever felt stuck as a student or as a young adult in a world that is constantly evolving? I did. To solve this notion of constantly feeling as if I am not progressing as an individual the way that I would like to, I decided to study abroad. I decided to study abroad for the Fall 2022 semester and I am currently in my third month of the program. I am in the south of Germany and I am preparing to come back home as my study abroad program is coming near an end. However, before I leave my study abroad program, I decided to create this outlet to elaborate the experiences I have gained while being abroad. I came to the south of Germany early September and although three months have passed, it feels as if I have just began my study abroad journey. When you are constant evolving, growing, and flourishing, the time goes and flies past you. Everyday was a new day to learn and understand what I, as an individual, like to engage in (Activities, school programs, interest, etc.). Studying abroad is genuinely an adventure that can allow an individual to gain completely new perspectives on life. Besides making new friends, learning new cultures, gaining better and bigger insights on the world, study abroad provides a temporary outlet for students to understand what they would like in this world.

Studying abroad provides you the means to expand your network in a non superficial manner. This network can provide meaningful connections that an individual would like to keep for the rest of their lives. Also, when studying abroad in a particular program, you are not stuck to that location. Due to accessibility and ease of transportation outside of the United States, traveling to different locations is easy and cheap. This has influenced me to travel to several different cities in the Germany in addition to exploring new countries that I have not been to. 

Moreover, studying abroad has given me “travel buddies” or friends that I consider to be life long pals even though I have had shared short amounts of time with them. These friendships I have created in a short time frame are not shallow friendships but instead very meaningful.

World Wanderers (X and L)

This is the blog-story of my boyfriend (X) and me (L). We have a lot of plans for the second half of 2021. Among them, we are planning to move out of our country (Peru), but just for a couple of months.

We do not know where yet, but we see it as a kind of “training” for our future plans. Eventually, we would like to live abroad, but not now. Maybe in 5 or 10 years. It depends on a bunch of circumstances;  that we can work remotely is one of the things that we have to considere in the future.

Until we can achieve that, we want to experiment what does it feel like to be an “expat” (I always loved that word. I think is a very elegant way to say that we are planning to migrate). But we are still discussing where we would like to spend our two months, since I had asked to ask leave at work due to the difficult economic circumstances that my company is going through.

Our first choice would have been some city of Europe, but the old continent is still closed for us (Peruvians) due to restrictions for the pandemic of COVID-19. So we are still thinking on where to go. Fortunately, we have a lot of experience traveling. We like to think that we are not common tourists; we are travelers. 

So I'll keep you posted on what we choose. There are still a few months to go until August and September (the months I requested as leave).

Boost Knowledge Base

In the span of two weeks I have traveled to 8 different cities. That is the best part of studying and living abroad in Europe. As someone who loves to travel, the accessibility of traveling in Europe is really amazing and something that I will most definitely miss when I come back to America. The ease and accessibility in addition to the affordability of traveling is why I believe Europeans have more general knowledge than Americans.

In my experience, Europeans have more worldly knowledge that overall help them understand general knowledge. For example, several Americans are unaware that Egypt and Morocco are African countries simply because there are unaware that in the continent of Africa, there are Arab speaking countries. However, all Europeans I have met are well aware of where Egypt and Morocco in addition to other countries and how its corresponding cultures work. Intercultural communication is a subject that many Europeans are knowledgable about and I believe that is partly due to the education system but most importantly, the accessibility and affordability of travel.

European citizens can further inquire and learn more about different cultures because they can simply drive, take a train, ferry, or plane to another destination that exhibits very different culture than their home culture. Americans do not have this luxury. For example, the main mode of transportation is flying because everything is so far away due to the large land mass of the United States. As a result, many Americans are unaware of different cultures that are surrounding them and therefore, are culturally ignorant. This also may be the reason as to why many Americans have poor geography knowledge. Therefore I think all American students should study abroad to another continent besides Australia, and experience being a traveler that goes to different countries with ease.

By becoming a globetrotter for their semester abroad, Americans will gain great insight such as the difference between Eastern and Western society in addition to a better understanding of different cultures. Also, this will boost their overall knowledge base including improving the geography of Americans. The affordability and ease of traveling is another reason why I believe Americans should study abroad.
