Louis Danhi has been missing since June 2013. The then-38-year-old man was last seen in Stanislaus County, California. Louis last spoke to his girlfriend, Rebecca, via phone on June 20th, 2013. He told her that he was going to drop a friend off before going to the San Francisco International Airport catch a flight to Las Vegas. Louis never made his flight and has never been seen or heard from again.
Rebecca tried to get in touch with Louis several times around the time he was supposed to arrive in Vegas, but her calls and texts went unanswered. She eventually learned he had never made his flight. Worried, Rebecca subsequently contacted Louis' father, Adam Danhi, to let him know about her concerns.
Adam tried to get in contact with Louis several times himself before eventually reporting him missing on June 22nd, 2013. That same day, Louis' rental car was found abandoned in "an unincorporated area near Livermore, California." The car reportedly did not yield any clues about Louis' whereabouts.
Reports state that Louis was involved in the marijuana business. He was arrested in 2004 after trying to ship nearly 60 pounds of marijuana from Glendale, California to the east coast. By 2013, Louis was living in Massachusetts. However, he was still involved in the marijuana industry and often flew to California for business.
Louis' father, Adam, has been dedicated to finding his son. In 2019, he filed a petition to declare Louis deceased and to establish the facts of his death. The documents in the petition reveal even more suspicious circumstances surrounding Louis' disappearance.

California’s Rising and Sinking Coast Global sea level has been rising at a rate of 0.1 inches (3.3 millimeters) per year in the past three decades. The causes are mostly the thermal expansion of warming ocean water and the addition of fresh water from melting ice sheets and glaciers. But even as the sea takes up more space, the elevation of the land is also changing relative to the sea. What geologists call vertical land motion—or subsidence and uplift—is a key reason why local rates of sea level rise can differ from the global rate. California offers a good example of how much sea level can vary on a local scale. “There is no one-size-fits-all rule that applies for California,” said Em Blackwell, a graduate student at Arizona State University. Blackwell worked recently with Virginia Tech geophysicist Manoochehr Shirzaei to estimate vertical land motion along California’s coast by analyzing radar measurements made by satellites. The research team—which also included Virginia Tech’s Susanna Werth and Geoscience Australia’s Chandrakanta Ojha—found that up to 8 million Californians live in areas where the land is sinking, including large numbers of people around San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Land can rise or fall as a consequence of natural and human-caused processes. Key natural processes include tectonics, glacial isostatic adjustment, sediment loading, and soil compaction, explained Shirzaei. Humans can induce vertical land motion by extracting groundwater and through gas and oil production. The map at the top of this page highlights the variability in the rising and falling of land across California’s 1000-mile (1,500-kilometer) coast. Areas shown in blue are subsiding, with darker blue areas sinking faster than lighter blue ones. The areas shown in dark red are rising the fastest. The map was created by comparing thousands of scenes of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data collected between 2007 and 2011 with more collected between 2014 and 2018. Blackwell and colleagues looked for differences in the data—a processing technique known as interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). The radar data came from sensors on Japan’s Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) and Europe’s Sentinel-1A satellite. The researchers also made use of horizontal and vertical velocity data from ground-based receiving stations in the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). The InSAR data shown in these maps have an average spatial resolution of 80 meters per pixel, more than one thousand times higher than previous maps based only on GNSS data. The reasons why land uplifts or subsides in any given area can be complex. Over long time scales and large scales, tectonic plates can shift the land. For instance, in Northern California the subduction of the small Gorda plate beneath the North American plate at the Mendocino Triple Junction causes the crust to thicken and rise a few millimeters per year. But to the south of Cape Mendocino, the tectonic environment is quite different. Instead of one plate diving beneath another and pushing it upward, the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate grind past each other in a north-south direction, which causes significantly less uplift in central and southern California. Other geologic forces work closer to the surface and over shorter spans of time. In river deltas, bays, valleys, and other areas where sediments pile up, land tends to sink over time from the added weight—a process called sediment loading. It also sinks because particles of sediments get squeezed together and compressed over time, explained Shirzaei, the project lead and a member of NASA’s sea level change science team. In fact, sediment compaction is the main reason that the areas around San Francisco Bay, Monterey Bay, and San Diego Bay have relatively high rates of subsidence. In the detailed map of San Francisco (above), note that the low-lying airport is subsiding. Subsidence is also particularly pronounced on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, which has seen subsidence exceeding 10 millimeters per year thanks in part to a landfill on the island. The area of uplift east of San Francisco in the Livermore Valley is likely caused by the underground aquifer refilling and rebounding after a long period of drought. Human activities tend to have more short-term effects on vertical land motion. One example is the zone of strong uplift around Santa Ana, a valley just south of Los Angeles. That is mainly due to a groundwater management system that has replenished aquifers in recent years, a process that causes uplift. The map indicates one bit of positive news for Los Angeles: uplift along parts of the coast makes much of the city and its coastal suburbs less exposed to flooding hazards caused by increased sea level rise than other major coastal cities. This picture of vertical land motion highlights the sea level rise planning and mitigation challenges that communities in many parts of the state face. “The dataset presented here can assist long-term resilience planning that enables coastal communities to choose among a continuum of adaptation strategies to cope with adverse impacts of climate change and sea-level rise,” said Shirzaei. NASA Earth Observatory images by Lauren Dauphin, using data from Blackwell, Em, et al. (2020) and topographic data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Story by Adam Voiland.

Ideas & Personal Projects
Ideas
According to the text Truth Needs no Ally by Howard Chapnick, photojournalists need more than technical skills to succeed and well-thought out ideas are their most important asset. To a photojournalist thinking is a must in the development of editorial ideas and when it comes to thinking, thinking is an adventure, thinking is power, and thinking is fun. It’s important to remember that ideas are just as important as other elements such as technique, composition, content, selection of details, and etc. that goes into the making of a picture story, photographic essay, or news coverage. Without ideas there are no stories.
When it comes to ideas a magazine editor might not always rely on their in-house staff to develop concepts and stories, they will constantly turn to freelance photographers and other sources for new ideas. As the photojournalistic marketplace expands, the most successful photographers will be those who generate the most and the best editorial ideas. A photographer is responsive to what is happening in his or her corner or other parts of the world can serve as an independent research arm and source of ideas for magazines.
A blog post called The Importance Of An Idea In Your Photography by Frank Calidonna also touches base on the importance of idea. Frank mentions that “Nothing in your creative life is as important and fragile as an idea. Initially they are fleeting and elusive. They must be recorded as soon as possible after conception or they will be lost forever. “
Becoming an Ideas Person:
Photojournalists have to be constantly expanding their world, exposing themselves to new people, new ideas, new experience. An example the text mentioned was that “David Douglas Duncan could never have done his monumental work on Pablo Picasso had he not pursued contact on several levels.”
When developing ideas, they must be visually translatable such as skydiving, mental institutions, teaching a one-year-old to swim, childbirth, and etc. Therefore, other ideas could be more difficult to photograph which means the photographs will rely on the interpretation of the photographer—such as New York City, the Hudson River, and New York women.
The Good Ideas Around You:
Ideas are everywhere—in newspapers, magazines, books, music, and on television news and feature programs. They relate to your life. The original idea is not based on an event is the most distinctive kind of editorial idea. It can. Rarely be duplicated.
An example from the text would be when “Jim Richardson was a staff photographer at the Topeka Captial Journal, he spent more than three years photographing life in two hundred-pupil high in Rosseville, Kansas.” This idea was based off of his knowledge of rural small-town life in Kansas.
I remember last semester having a photojournalist by the name of Julio Cortez as a guest speaker and there was a story that he mentioned that reminds me that there are stories and good ideas around you. He mentioned being in an airport and seeing a woman and her child and he decided to go up to them and have a conversation and the conversation led to him changing his flight to follow them and create a story. According to his article “A few days ago Yancarlos Amaya was walking along the muddy riverbank after crossing the Rio Grande and landing on the U.S. side of the border with Mexico. His mother, Celestina Ramirez, 28, said they turned themselves in to U.S. Border Patrol officers and later spent hours in custody, a night under a bridge and three more days in a detention facility.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Presenting Your Ideas
The text from Truth Needs no Ally mentions what is needed to be done by the photographer in order to present a great idea. The first is having a first-hand knowledge of what subjects has been published in the last five to ten years. Which also means to have the common sense to look through the National Geographic index to assure that the ideas you want to present haven’t been done already.
What you also want to keep in mind is that when an editor receives a story idea, the first questions they are going to ask is:
“Why should we do this story?”
“Will this story be of interest to our audience?”
“Does this free lance have his facts straight; is that really the situation?”
Some editors can also be so literate that for them a misspelled word or punctuation mark or error in grammar is like a stop sign.
Some Basic Rules for Submitting Picture-Based Ideas to Editors:
1. The idea is visually translatable.
2. It it necessary to spell out preconceived individual pictures in a proposal.
3. The idea should be presented in a tight, cohesive, simple proposal.
4. In the proposal address why the publication should be interested in publishing your idea.
5. The idea should have a nucleus, a central theme, a core from which the elements of the story radiate.
6. Proposals for stories should reflect strong personal interest in the idea.
7. Sell your ideas enthusiastically.
8. Above all, research, research, research.
Personal Projects
Undertaking a personal project means having to be self-demanding, self-motivated and stubborn. It means being willing to spend many hours, maybe years, on the project, and subordinate other pleasurable aspects of your life to it. You can literally do a project in your own backyard.
For example Bill Owen’s backyard was Livermore, California. He wad working as a photographer for the Livermore newspaper in the 1960s. He began to photograph his neighbors and the life they lived in their tract homes. He then explored the social phenomena of existence in his book, Suburbia. Later he followed up on other projects.
Sometimes projects take the form of cooperative ventures, where several photographers work in concert; the aim is altruistic and the impact profound.

Do you know where your xenon is?
Maybe it's hanging out with iron and nickel in the Earth's core
The paradox of the missing xenon might sound like the title of the latest airport thriller, but it's actually a problem that's stumped geophysicists for decades. New work from an international team including Carnegie's Alexander Goncharov and Hanyu Liu, and Carnegie alumni Elissaios Stavrou and Sergey Lobanov, is chasing down the solution to this longstanding puzzle.
The mystery stems from meteorites, which retain a record of our Solar System's earliest days. One type, called carbonaceous chondrites, contain some of the most-primitive known samples of Solar System material, including a lot more xenon than is found in our own planet's atmosphere.
"Xenon is one of a family of seven elements called the noble gases, some of which, such as helium and neon, are household names," said lead author Stavrou, now at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, about the team's paper in Physical Review Letters. "Their name comes from a kind of chemical aloofness; they normally do not combine, or react, with other elements."
Because xenon doesn't play well with others, it's deficiency in Earth's atmosphere -- even in comparison to other, lighter noble gases, like krypton and argon, which theoretical predictions tell us should be even more depleted than xenon -- is difficult to explain.
