I spoke too soon, there are still more pages happening in this book (which is the Book of Learning volume three) and these latest are an attempt at tetra-pac intaglio of the beautiful Lutyens Crypt at the cathedral very near to my house. Most of the things printmakers use (such as Lino) are subverted materials - they were never design to be used for printmaking. I’m delivering a class on this idea of how we use recycled materials such as tetra pack or any plastic laminated card packaging. We are also looking at the design cycle a lot in #liverpoolindependentartschool online stuff and I’m delivering an intro to print session so my current sketchbook is reflecting that process. These pages start with the photo of the inked up plate itself. They often look better than the actual prints to me so I like them. The next is the initial test print. We make test prints not as finished outcomes but as a way to evaluate what needs changing on the plate. A lot needs changing here but the basic image is ok and the tonal distinctions are close to what I imagined originally. (Which explains why someone once asked me why all my prints looked like a nuclear winter 🤣) after that is the initial drawing in felt tip and fine liner on orange juice carton and then the test samples mounted on the same page as the print thereof. I enjoy this game and these drawings may never be quite as elegant as the excellent work of @iacartroom (which I am a big fan of and recently picked up my own piece from her Etsy shop -check out her work) but I very much enjoy the process of exploration. Down among the dead men

We spent an afternoon drawing in St James’ Garden, the cemetery below Liverpool’s Anglican cathedral. As a subject for drawing, it is full of stone and tree forms and textures, with a restrained colour pallette of grey-greens.

The most significant structure is the mausoleum for William Huskisson, Liverpool’s MP who was fatally injured by Stephenson’s Rocket on the opening day the Liverpool-Manchester Railway.

Above by Prue. A well-observed drawing of the Huskisson, full of interesting mark-making. A pity that the proportions were not quite planned well enough, and so no room for the crucifix at the top.

Here’s the real thing (below, from a different angle). You can see that Prue has made it slimmer, less squat than it actually is.

Jane (two drawings below) has made it even slimmer, which is a shame because the actual mark-making is enjoyable for its freedom and liveliness.

I do believe it is possible to keep the liveliness and freedom AS WELL as doing a bit of careful advance construction. Proportions are critical in a piece of architecture like this, and judging them isn’t as instinctive as you might suppose.

Maria (below) said she felt uncomfortable with St James’s Garden as a drawing venue, but she got dutifully stuck in. I wondered whether she might express in the drawing some of her misgivings about the place, emphasizing brooding shadows for instance. But the airy lightness of the picture seems to dispel anything sinister or threatening about the place.

Eve made this satisfying study in gradations of charcoal (below), getting a nice mix of surface effects.

My first thought was that as a composition it is too static. There is nothing to guide the eye around the picture: no rhythms, no changes of direction,except for the splayed diagonals that focus in on the white gravestone in the centre.

Yet I think it does hold the viewer, in a rather mesmeric way, exactly because of this intense focus on the white gravestone. Lack of dynamism becomes the main feature: what is more static than a grave?

Eve’s second subject (below) was a complete contrast –a gravestone within an arch within an arch, all set at different angles (see photo below). Eve’s rendering of it is rather desultory (she was coffee-deficient) but as a study of abstract shapes it is quite exciting. Some of us were reminded of John Piper.

Here’s the grave in question – from a different angle – and I personally found it such a stimulating subject I went back a day or two later to draw it myself.

The Book of Obedience went on over several years but started around the time I first did urban Sketching, invited by @paulg.art I had studied my degree in conceptual fine art, specialising in sculpture, so I imagined it would hard to break into a clique of artists who’s practice was totally different. Paul was right though and they were enormously encouraging and inclusive and interested in what I was doing. The format is that the urban sketchers meet in the first Saturday of each month and draw a particular area of the city decided in advance. They then draw around that area in large enough numbers that one is not alone and circled by critics. It ends with the throw down at the meeting point where we all get to see each other’s work. We are lucky in Liverpool to live in such a stunning city but I would recommend anyone seeing this to find their local urban sketching group on Facebook or here and join in. It helped my confidence and as Frederick Franck said, “I draw for one reason only, to see the world before I die” so drawing for me is also a spiritual practice of placement meditation. Here we have a record of the now removed but iconic Flyover, the Chinese Arch on Chinese New Year, the inside of the Central Library, North John Street and Moorfields station - some years after these drawings I was out with them again today so I include todays drawing of the Metropolitan Cathedral on an old charity shop frame.
