Prompt #5: Barbarous
Tumblr media
In hindsight, she should have taken the Scions up on their offer. Or she should have headed to the Shroud. Dealing with the flirtatious white-haired pretty boy of an Archon or the Elder Seedseer's anti-Eikon wards would have been far more prefable to what she currently was dealing with.
"Get the fucking Eikon! You're useless, all of you!" Riven caught her chakrams, breaking the neck of an imperial guard with a spin-kick. Then she darted forward to avoid a spear-thrust, flinging the chakrams out to slice open the necks of two more imperials. A ribbon of aether snaked around a third as Riven shifted into a quick series of sultry dance-steps. Bewitched, the imperial lowered his arms, and then crumpled as a chakram bounced off his jaw. A woman's frustrated scream- and the sudden smell of burning ceruleum was all the warning Riven had to move--and she did. A crater appeared where she once had been, the dancer steadying herself on a nearby boulder. Then she bolted again as another blast vaporized the rock.
"I hate this barbarous realm! I hate it, Ihateitihateitihateit!"
Twelve, what the fuck did I run into?! Riven scrambled for cover around another rock formation. When no blasts came her way, she carefully slithered to the edge and peered around it. Her final opponent was a white magitek armor, piloted by a... oh shite.
Imperial tribunus armor?! Riven quickly ducked back behind the rocks. Shite, shite, shite! Is she one of van Baelsar's eikon-hunters ?!
"Show yourself, savage!" Came the shrill scream, punculated by another explosion nearby. Riven grimanced. Something about her opponent didn't sound right.
She sounds like someone having a mental breakdown! Another explosion shook the ground and rocks around the brunette.
"Come out, you Dominant bitch!!"
She keeps making that much noise the Brass Blades or the Immortal Flames are going to show up! If they're not already on their way! Horizon was some distance back, but close enough that the explosions would have attracted attention. Huffing, Riven considered her options. She could semi-Prime or fully Prime, Valefor's power would be enough to disable the magitek armor. The imperial officer however...
Don't know if she's kitted out to fight a Domimant or not. It was in Riven's best interest to assume yes, which meant engaging the Imperial was not an option. Hooking her chakrams back on her hips, Riven reached into one of her travel-packs, withdrawing a glass bottle filled with a white liquid.
"Valefor." She whispered. Her Eikon responded, chirring softly at the image in Riven's mind. Power flooded her veins, bled out of her skin, aether beginning to reconfigure her body. Feathers began to sprout on her arms, neck, hair, wing buds began to grow-
Riven darted out from the safety of the rocks, hurling the bottle at the magitek armor as hard as she could. The glass shattered against the metal, exploding in an eye and ear searing caphony of light and sound. The imperial shrieked in rage, and Riven gave herself over to the Priming. A gust of wind lifted her into the air, taking her higher and higher, straight into a incoming thermal-oops there was a hawk nearby, her apologizes --
Executing a graceful wing over, the now raptor-sized Valefor spread her wings and glided away from the improptu battle field. Below she could dimly hear the woman howling in rage, and just ahead on the road...dust clouds.
No longer my problem!

The last week or so has been wild. I got through so much, and finally finished ARR!! @g-r-i-m-a helped me with Castrum, Praetorium, and Porta Decumana :)
I feel like I'm finally starting to know more about Dal and how he would react in situations. I wish I could write or draw as quickly as my thoughts come to me. You'll just have to stay tuned!

hello i know this is like. super late but i saw some of your posts on werlyt and i wanted to add that im pretty sure livia's attraction to gaius overall is mostly an ENG thing. the scene where gaius tells her to meet in his office later is, actually, standard procedure in japan for bosses when they need to scold employees in private. ive actually seen several japanese players express confusion over non japanese players viewing that in a romantic context. and its obvs not the first time that (1)
(2) the english team has fucked up, as we have seen with nael van darnus always being intended to be female in 1.0 but the english translation team didnt realize that. so while i do think its a shitty attempt at retconning, i do think that the scene everyone cites as "evidence" of gaius and livia having an affair is moreso something that was lost in cultural translation, as he doesnt ever express anything otherwise. the eng team seems to. make many things romantic for no reason
-----------------
Combining both asks. My Sorrow of Werlyt tag; some faint praise and plenty of salt, fair warning. My Livia sas Junius tag as well as I've talked about this before.
I dunno even know that the EN team specifically is "making" things romantic for no reason--in fact, there are criticisms of some character translations that seem to try and ensure there isn't romantic misconception from some characters--as it is players reading so many things with shipper goggles on, and this is a case of poor context.
Though it does sound like a weird request; for me, as a former soldier, once the other officers had left, the criticism or instruction would happen then and there, not in an hour (unless Gaius needed the time for something else), and if needing guaranteed privacy from other soldiers, I would have said "office" not "quarters" as the connotations there are very different in English (and officers/high rank NCOs that I knew had an office separate from their personal quarters while on base). But there are a lot of folks playing EN, perhaps some of them more familiar with the tropes, or simply non-ship focused, that didn't read romance into it at all ever.
Overall, everything Livia says in EN lean toward an obsession with her foster father, though his reactions to her are far more reserved and offhand--to the point of forgetting about her entirely even, his interactions with Cid (and later the Auri quintet) as much more important. He reacts more to Rhitahytn's death than hers, which strikes me as odd. Even something simple would do.
Nero makes a comment after Titan about Livia being "in love" though how much it's supposed to be a joke or what also seems lost in text and translation.
In general I think ARR needed a few more editing passes they had no time and budget for, given they rebuilt an entire game in the span usually reserved for an expansion. They did OK overall, though some weird choices then have haunted the story and characters since.
Also the EN localization team has changed over the years, so the teams have been picking up and recontextualizing the pieces over the years. Koji's been over on FFXVI, so Kathryn Cwynar has been EN local lead since Shadowbringers, as revealed in a 6.1 live letter (she's the bespectacled lady doing translations during FanFest 2021 and those PLLs when Miss Aimi cannot). The EN and JP are mostly written together, but there's still a lot of back and forth, too, as well as interaction, cultural checks, and consistency with the other languages they have to manage. Kate's twitter has an interview pinned with the Local Leads for each language, and the coordinator, from in March 2021.
I also have a post on the Eula/Nael mess, and in that case it's one of those things the devs claim they decided to retcon-but-we-don't-like-to-call-them-retcons, perhaps rather than admit to an error or place blame for mistranslation of a major figure. Which is another aspect of cleaning up some of those missteps that linger, and we're honestly not going to know that answer for sure.
EDIT ADDENDUM: DT has a good point in the Replies too (that I usually mention, at least did in another post); everything we ever see in ARR about the “relationship” is entirely Livia’s statements and POV, across all languages/translations. So if people are reading into it, it’s because they’ve been primed to based on Livia’s comments and Nero’s snarking. Not anything Gaius himself ever said or did, and the “My quarters, one hour” line ends up a victim of translation as players take Livia of all people at face value, not considering her POV is very, very skewed.
Though it is common enough for players to take everyone at face value, heroes and villains alike, without considering their personal perspectives, misinformation, misunderstandings, outright lying, and other agendas, before we even get to how each player interprets those lines they’re taking as absolute truth.

If there is a vote for most “traditional” villain of A Realm Reborn, I’d say it’s likely Livia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Minfilia is an unarmed non-combatant and Livia has no issue torturing her (we assume near death but they can’t show blood so I realize it can be debatable). She has shown numerous times to consider everyone other than Gaius to be beneath her and expendable, she’s even talked down to Nero, her equal as part of the Tribuni. She has no issue threatening and killing her own people in multiple cutscenes. Not to mention killing innocents and other non-combatants in the Scion base, as we know many were not warriors but merchants or scholars. She is wholly unapologetic about it.
And don’t mistake me... I’m not complaining! I actually found it refreshing that the female counterpart on the team was the MOST unhinged and violent, but still was confidant as a woman and a lover. She is borderline evil and I think that’s awesome. She was willing to kill everyone and everything for her lover but also support him and his dreams. A real ride or die. She was a great opposite to Gaius. I hated her, but enjoyed her as a character.

FFXIV Write - Day 10 - Channel
Tumblr media
Raehn remembers when Dalmasca was free. He remembers losing his parents when Garlemald invaded, remembers watching his home and his people be subjugated. He remembers believing in a better future, fighting for it...and he remembers his brother paying for it with his life. While the Empire may be a faceless enemy, there is one towards whom he holds a particular grudge: The Witch of Dalmasca. The one who executed his brother and drove him from his home.
When the Warrior of Light assembles a party to storm Castrum Meridianum, intending on facing the tribunus, he is only too happy to accept the offer she extends him.
Raehn had let his rage get the better of him. He should have known better, for he knew their enemy better than most. Mayhap she had cleaned her armor since last they had met, but he saw the blood that stained it all the same.
Livia Sas Junius. The Witch of Dalmasca. He had thought he was ready to face her, but his blood burned hotter than it ever had, his anger dulling his senses, making him reckless.
The plan. Remember the plan.
His bow cast aside, he lunged with his sword. Just like he learned in the coliseum - it was all about footwork. Strong legs won over strong arms, for a blow could only devastate if it hit you. One strike, two, ricocheting off her armour. One strike, two; hers this time. His injuries slowed his movements, his wounds too grave. When her fist slammed into his cheek, he knew it was over. After all, who was he against this beast? Just a foolish boy who thought he could change the world.
Blow after blow rendered him utterly useless. He let her. More, he wanted to scream. She had not granted his brother so much. A single shot to the head was all she had offered. She hadn’t even looked at him. Raehn remembered the way he had crumpled, how she had moved on before his body had hit the ground. Just another resistance rat. Another example to set. Had Nheren been given the chance, he would have fought back. He was always the strong one. The clever one.
It should have been me. So do it. Finish the job. Come on!
“Is that all you’ve got?”
Quite how he managed to talk, he was not sure. He smiled at her, his teeth stained red, his eye swollen shut. And she ceased her assault, for but a moment.
That’s right. Figure it out. Won’t matter. It’s too late.
“Pitiful thing,” Livia said. She held him by the collar, close enough that when he spat at her, her mask bore his blood. “What use is defiance, here at your end?”
“‘Tis you who are p-pitiful, Witch,” said Raehn. “You s-see us only as s-savages. And so you miss what is r-right beneath your nose. Glory…to…Dalmasca.”
She saw the light a moment too late. By the time Raehn stretched out his hand, there was naught that she could do. For he was proud, yes, but not so proud that he would forsake duty for vengeance. It mattered only that she perished; it needed not be by his hand. And who better than to offer the glory to than a friend?
What aether he could spare, he channeled into his hand, outstretched towards the mage in the distance. That which she had already borrowed from the rest of their party had empowered her enough, but she would not act without his. For she was a friend. And he would have trusted none other with this honour.
Livia cried out, but her voice was lost amidst the deep rending of the heavens. A maelstrom of endless sky swirled above them, magick clouds parting, pulling a star from the depths of distant heavens. It crashed into the tribunus, its energy inert as it washed over their group. Raehn fell without the support of her crushing grip, and each broken bone jarred painfully when he hit the ground.
Someone called his name, and when he squinted past the fading light he saw her run towards him, near leaping over the barely stirring form of the tribunus to reach him. He tried to sit, but the edges of his vision turned dark. Instead, he let her pull him onto her knee as Cecily cast her healing magicks.
Was Nheren looking down on them he wondered? Was he proud?
Your little brother has grown so much. You would barely recognise him now.
“Are you alright?” Avelyn asked, stroking his hair away from his face. She had cast aside her staff, perhaps recklessly, but who was he to complain, with his sword and his bow both gods knew where? “When we said cause a distraction, we didn’t mean act as a punching bag. Look at you!”
He didn’t care. His wounds would heal. More than she knew. He needed to…yes, he could do this one thing. A little pain mattered not. Somewhere, he found the strength to launch himself forward, to take her into his arms and embrace her like he would never again get the chance.
“Thank you,” he said. “I would have had no other at my side. You truly are...a warrior of light.”

Livia’s Lips
It struck me the latest of many, MANY times doing battle with Livia sas Junius that there’s a Garlean artisan somewhere who had the task of putting lips onto the faceplate of her armor.
There are a TON of questions. Just a few:
Did she demand it?
Is the artist who made them proud of their work?
Are they soft? I imagine them feeling like that squishy material for wrist-rests they have on mousepads and keyboards.
Does she try to keep them on when she and Gaius are doing their thing? Does he oblige her? (Always/Sometimes/Never?)

The 26 year old Livia sas Junius was feared by many in her role as tribunus angusticlavius of the XIVth Legion. Before joining the army, she was robbed of her parents at a young age and was forced to leave behind her younger sister, Lucia.
