I was thinking about the Super Mario Bros movie for some reason. Not the weird fun one from the 90's, the new popular one. I didn't really like it, because it was mainly a bunch of references to Mario. Meandering plot, uninteresting writing - you'd get the same emotional response from reading a wikipedia page listing all the products Mario was in.
It got me thinking about how Ready Player One was the same way, and why. Why wouldn't I like a movie about a bunch of stuff I already like?
Cinema Paradiso is about the joy you find in watching films. The Fablemans is about the joy of creating films. Living in Oblivion is a critique of how the process of making a film is long, boring and mostly annoying, with the end message being that every film that gets released is a miracle. High Fidelity is literally about music store employees, but it can be generalized to be about the kind of person that enjoys anything seriously. Film buffs, literature nerds, gym rats, anyone that's really into something is represented by that film.
Even if the movie isn't really about art it can still be about nostalgia. Wild Strawberries, My Dinner with Andre, The Holdovers and Mirror are all movies about reflecting on the life you've had and dealing with the emotions of regret and nostalgia. About a time of your life that you wish you could go back to so you could relive it, or a terrible time you'd like to fix retroactively.
Ready Player One and the Mario movie aren't about celebrating films, or games, or any kind of culture and they're not about reflecting on anything. They're just lazy regurgitations of pop culture. Ready Player One will remind you that Akira exists, but it doesn't have anything interesting to say about it. It doesn't have anything to say about the time period that produced movies like Robocop, just that Robocop existed at one point. What reflections or thoughts are to be gained from being told that Back to the Future happened? You're better off just watching Back to the Future.
To prove my point: I namedropped a bunch of movies in this post and it was probably really, really annoying to read as a result.

LIVING IN OBLIVION- 1995 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
Steve Buscemi plays Nick, an indie film director making a low budget film. The night before shooting a big scene, he has nightmares of technical issues and never ending problems. It gets worse when he wakes up and actually gets to the set.....
Very unique and entertaining 90's comedy. Enjoy the switches between black and white and colour. LOVE Catherine Keener. Buscemi is always the man. Love the escalating chaos and the dream reveals. This films a trip. Great stuff.

1995, 1987, 2001 for movie ask game
1995: Living In Oblivion (Surreal kinda slice-of-life about a bunch of people trying to make a movie. If you ever wanted to know what a set is like, this gets pretty close)
Tumblr media
1987: Withnail and I (Two unemployed actors go to the country for a holiday and things go horribly wrong. Just a great movie with clever writing and smart performances, Paul McGann is underrated as an actor imo!)
Tumblr media
2001: A Knight's Tale (Take the standard sports movie formula. Make it about jousting in the Middle Ages. Put a bunch of Queen and David Bowie in it. Proceed to have a good time! I saw this relatively recently and I can say I slept on it too long--not faithful to the Canterbury Tales in the slightest but I don't care because that's not the point of the movie. Lot of great performances in this one!)

Does anyone remember the first song they ever liked?
I am talking about like the first time you really listened to music and you were like wait play that one song again, what is that??
The first memory I have, would be me at (according to my mom) 4 years old "helping" by holding my parents beer while they reorganized their CD drawers. I remember mom telling me not to drink her drink, which I then did exactly that because idk for some reason telling me NOT to do something would always without fail cause me to do it out of curiosity. I hated the taste, but it was a funny moment for them I'm sure. They were playing this Living in Oblivion album, and the first song I remember liking was on it.
Tumblr media
I remember my mom asking me do you like this one? Do you want me to play it again? Once I learned how to use the stereo, this was the first CD I listened to on repeat. It's not that it's necessarily the best mix ever made, or my favorite songs ever to this day. I'm thinking about experiencing enjoying a song for the first time; feeling the electricity buzzing in every part of your body, refusing to let you stay still. Any time I could I would play my favorite album at max volume while spinning in my parents computer chair. I am not exactly sure why or what led me to do that, but it became my favorite thing to do until I broke the chair. I was an extremely high energy kid, so my mother trying to find the perfect outlet for me got me into ballet. Then dancing to music quickly became my favorite mode of listening. I would even try to do it with my moms portable CD player which was not always successful, but it's never faded even a little. Every day I require at least an hour of listening to music and more than likely I'll end up dancing- without it I am miserable and deflated.
I'm not entirely sure if anyone else has had similar memories or experiences, and I've often heard most people don't remember things as far back as I do like being 4 years old. But I would absolutely love to hear from anyone else if they know what I mean, and have a first song they ever liked that they still remember and listen to fondly. This was mine, even though every song on that album I feel the same way about.

god i get so emotional every time i see a video of jb performing live and hear a bunch people in the background singing softly along with her. like fuck those songs are so raw and come from such a personal and lonely place, and the fact that there’s a room full of people there too and with her, like i see you, and you see me— it’s just so crazy beautiful. i love humans. i’m crying.

Baurus the Hero of Kvatch
Okay okay okay. Let me explain. Here's the thing.
I'm a little disappointed that Baurus would part way with us in the sewer. He was tracking Mythic Dawn agents, and going out of his way to meet the Sponsor. We finally got the volume four of the Mythic Dawn Commentaries. It's our leads to locate their hidden shrine. He just left! Like what?!
For gameplay reason, he needs to stand down and let the player do things. For story perspective, I believe Baurus would still hang around after we got volume four. Then tag along to the Dagon shrine, and maybe the Paradise.
I believe he took this mission of destroy the Mythic Dawn upon himself. His Blades colleagues died, so did the emperor. He wanted to avenge them, and he's the one who is closest to the truth. He tracked down these assassins and learned their identity. Then the Oblivion Gates started to open everywhere. He may knew these assassinations were leading to it and wanted to put a stop to their evil doing.
Like after they got all four volumes, they went to Arcane University, brainstormed with Tar-Meena, and cracked the coded message. They found out the hidden location, traveled to the Dagon Shrine, and encountered some Oblivion Gates on their way.
Baurus didn't wear Blade Armor when undercover. Acelta didn't feel safe for him going in the Oblivion Gate unarmored. Since Acelta is a mage, he doesn't need any armor. He gave Baurus the Kvatch Armor. Acelta always carried that for sentimental purposes. Now it can finally put to good use. Together, they fought off every Daedra, closed the Oblivion Gate and saved the day.
They traveled from Imperial City, stopped at Cheydinhal, then to Bruma. They closed some Oblivion Gates together on their journey. Some townsfolk witnessed it and was convinced that Baurus is the Hero of Kvatch, since he's the one wearing Kvatch armor.
After the Oblivion Crisis, Martin was gone, Acelta disappeared, Baurus quit Blades and started to wear that armor ever since. It's a nice gift and has great enchantment, too. He walked around Cyrodiil and continued to help everyone in need. It helped him feel closer to his friends. Years later, everyone memories were faded. They ended up recognised him as the Hero of Kvatch.
