Eight (8) Shows to Get to Know Me
tagged by @talays-portkey ♥ ty for tagging me and having me walk down memory lane for the past few days (spent too much time in all the tags microdosing on my upbringing)
DISCLAIMER: i wanted to showcase defining eras in my life/made an impact in a substantial way; i’m also recommending an ep to watch with each one, which isn’t part of the tag format but imma do it
--
i. LOST (2004-2010)
this was my whole world for my entire hs existence and into my early college years. half of the shows listed here stems from my first love of the ensemble cast, their interwoven yet clandestine storylines, and the mystery box. at my first sdcc, half of the cast was present when they debuted p1 of the series finale (you’d think i was dead the whole time fksfsk;lv)
the jessi special: The Constant (04x05)
ii. Fringe (2008-2013)
yes, i faithfully followed jj abrams into another insane show. i think it actually altered my brain chemistry, rewired something in me, devoured a piece of me. once LOST was over and Fringe brought in the alternate universe, i dove in head first and never resurfaced
the jessi special: Making Angels (04x11)
iii. Doctor Who (2005-Present)
i think it was technically winter 2010 when i started binging this show because s6 was my first time catching it live (was young and naïve, i caught it on bbca lol) ive been on hellsite for almost two years at the time and fully became a fandom blog, so it was inevitable i would love this series. i think it was the first show i made gifs/edits for???
the jessi special: The Doctor’s Wife (06x04)
iv. Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012-2013)
oh look, my dna makeup shifts again. i actually started watching this show the week leading up to Darcy Day and can still vividly remember the migraines from binging 8-10min eps times 60ish worth of content. this show got me into writing my first fic, running an rp blog, creating instrumental playlists, making a DWxLBD blog, AND eventually flying my ass back to CA to meet the cast and beloved mutuals at VidCon
the jessi special: A New Buddy (ep56)
v. Orphan Black (2013-2017)
happy international women’s day to this show and this show only! i think of all the shows listed here, this is the first time since LOST i caught all the eps in real time from the very beginning. this was filling the hole Fringe was about to carve deep in me. but if you cut me open, you will find the beth-shaped hole that nothing/no one has been able to fill and likely will never fill til the end of time
the jessi special: The Collapse of Nature (04x01)
vi. Shadowhunters (2016-2019)
im willing to admit that the reason i got into this show was because of the wedding kiss haha i saw the clip, signed the adoption papers on the spot, and went on to write a 100K+ wip series. admittedly, i confess that this was a DNF and never finished the last season... i abandoned my boy.gif
the jessi special: Of Men and Angels (01x06)
vii. Sense8 (2015-2018)
a show about eight children than i gave birth to, that i raised on my own, that i will defend on my death bed and beyond??? that show sense8?? yes that show sense8. fun fact, when they did the screening of the finale in Chicago, the cast ended up sitting three rows behind me in the theater and i could hear them talking in between scenes the entire evening. wish i could bottle that feeling up
the jessi special: I Have No Room in My Heart for Hate (02x07)
viii. Bad Buddy (2021-2022)
and we finally made it to the current decade! its nov 2021, im fresh off leaving my previous job and still getting situated in my new position, yet this show was a siren calling to me in the dark mist of my life. i ended up saving the binge watching for the week of my bday and my whole life shifted again. it must have been so alarming on the outside, seeing me go from making 1-2 edits a month to 1-2 edits a day for almost THREE MONTHS. the fact that i still cont to avg two edits/week since then... oy lol
the jessi special: Ep10 (shocked pikachu.jpg)
and ill also throw some honorable mentions too: Chuck, The Good Place, Vice Versa, Twenty Five Twenty One, Once Upon a Time, and Elementary
--
now tagging @pranink, @icouldhyperfixatehim, @noxclara, @curious-earth (no pressure tho!)

in lieu of a commonplace book: holiday edition
monday, dec 5, 2022 ~ 9pm ----> thursday, dec 22, 2022 ~ 4pm  ---->
                                      saturday, dec 24, 2022 ~ 4pm
i’ve had this one languishing in drafts for so long that it’s now a holiday ilcb! stay warm out there, get yourself something nice to drink and light a candle or two or three, i am sending you a hug and a far-too-long post.
Tumblr media
reading brrr what did i just finish. when i first drafted this post it was wintering by katherine may. fine premise, i generally accept her point about life inevitably having periods of winter and learning from them. i like the creativity of her different chapter topics. i am tepid to cool about the mix of research and creative writing, mostly because it wasn’t as scientific as i would have liked, and the bits of memoir turned me off at first. i’ve been reading more nonfiction the last few weeks, so i’m also here to report that index, a history of by dennis duncan was quite entertaining for being a book about a piece of book apparatus, and it will probably be a source of many good party facts for the next few months. i began listening to it as an audiobook though, and i must say the melifluous narrator’s voice was a) very entertaining because he had a really hard time with the latin and b) did his best with the fact that many of the examples in a book about indexes (indices?) were just lists of things and page numbers. switching back to print was a good move, imho.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
book of the month and possible new entry in my top ten of the year, though, was the goblin emperor by katherine addison, which housemate G gave me as an early christmas present and which was absolutely my shit, between the shakespearean language and the shakespearean court intrigue. the emotional weight of a character shifting from the formal ‘we’ to the informal ‘i’ midsentence! the gradual building of a totally new world and language system! all the supporting cast coming to love the main character in ways that he can’t quite believe but which are clear to the reader! it reminded me of the best bits of the hands of the emperor in that way, and it ranks alongside that one as far as being ‘books that i didn’t want to end.’ the name of the ‘untheileneise’ court is evocative of ‘unseelie’, ever so slightly, and the flavor combination of reading this while also watching the d20 show mentioned below has been delectable.
Tumblr media
watching couple of different contenders for this topic, surprisingly, between continuing to watch bossam: steal the fate with @hematiterings and fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood with @hematiterings and @pep-squad-lizzie, and having watched crouching tiger, hidden dragon and 20 minutes of a random episode of the white lotus on the plane, or now having been at my parents’ for a minute having started enjoying miss scarlet and the duke and three pines with them. on my own, though, it’s been dimension 20-- i bought a year’s subscription for myself as a present, and the entire visual and storytelling aesthetic of a court of fey and flowers has been hitting so right. i love aabria’s dm style, i thought this during exandria unlimited too (and i just did a cursory search of ilcb posts to make sure i haven’t said this already?? if i have please forgive me)-- there’s a richness and glitter to her narration and the details she chooses to highlight. and everyone in this group is doing such a great job, i’m in ep 2 ‘the great hart hunt’ right now and just, the different strategies each of the characters has selected to solve the puzzle, the combination of more court intrigue with humor and whatever earnest emotion peeps out sometimes, plus the slightly-different-but-equally-creative take on goblins from brennan and k.p. hobb here as opposed to the goblin emperor (they both have emotive ears!) is very good to me, personally.
Tumblr media
listening mostly podcasts, if i’m honest. i put on an 8-hours-of-gentle-christmas-carols yule log youtube video today, but really i’ve been listening most to the WBUR podcast last seen when doing dishes or cooking or otherwise getting the streets of this city back under my feet. the episode on the jewel heist is where i started, while the one on chinese pie / pâté chinois and the franco-american/quebecois in new england gave me an emotion. this evening, though, there will be christmas music and yes that is a threat.
Tumblr media
playing more stardew (while enjoying fey and flowers in the other window) but i’ve decided i can start a new game for a new year! while i work out how to download things from the itch.io bundle i bought literally two years ago, and scroll through the under $10 section on steam’s sale, recommendations are welcome. things i’m intrigued by: spiritfarer! a dragon age? i do not have a gaming laptop, a desktop computer, or a good gaming rig in any sense, and i will be choosing based entirely on Vibes (art / music / tone / narrative / writing etc), but input and suggestions are always welcome! also i tried to teach my dad 2048 and it went about as well as i could have hoped. also i asked for a zelda DS game for christmas like it’s 2013.
Tumblr media
making there was a lot that could have gone into this section over the last few weeks, if i’d posted it when i initially started thinking about it-- i hung a poster! remounted a shelf! and now have dried orange slices for last-minute ornaments and made many (MANY) molasses-ginger cookies, and am in the process of mulling apple juice (california apparently not believing in proper cloudy apple cider). we’re travelling to see family the day after boxing day, so any real holiday baking will probably happen once we’re there, rather than being made now and then having to be frozen or eaten all in a rush-- so nothing to report on the bread / pie / candy front. yet. CIDER UPDATE: it tastes like hot apple juice. luckily irish coffee is also an option now.
working on but it’s christmas! i hear you cry. yes, and all free time is time you could be working on your journal piece, i reply. i’ve also been grinding through RAship hours before the end of the year, even though my contract continues until the end of april, because the more i can get done now the easier the spring will be. also i’m reading some diss chapters for a friend (self-serving also because his topic is close enough to mine that i can call this research!) and working on a letter of support for a prof who’s been good to me over the years and who is up for a teaching award. my journal piece is a cleaned-up version of a talk i gave, so really it’s a question of prettying-up the footnotes and inserting better citations, and trying to make it Good Enough while not too different / not rewriting it entirely. what does this actually look like? hell if i know, but unless someone gets back to me about image permissions it’s a moot point anyway. happy new year to me.

Cast list for CATS International Tour 2022 today (26th of June).
A lot of the cast members have been sick, so some are understudies or have been flown in from London to help out.
Written out list:
Grizabella = Sarah-Marie Maxwell; Old Deuteronomy = Russell Dickson; Gus/Bustopher Jones = Hal Fowler; Munkustrap = Sebastian Goffin; Rum Tum Tugger = Ed Wade; Mr Mistoffelees = Liam Mower; Skimbleshanks = Freddie Clements; Rumpelteazer = Kirsty Ingram; Mungojerrie = Harry Robinson; Jennyanydots = Anna Campkin; Jellylorum = Elizabeth Futter; Bombalurina = Lizzie Nance; Demeter = Frances Dee; Victoria = Maiya Hikasa; Cassandra = Erin Gisele Chapman; Carbucketty = Roan Pronk; Jemima = Carrie Willis; Coricopat = Shakeel Kimotho; Tantomile = Ben Mundy; Macavity/Admetus = Aaron Elijah; Bill Baily = Aaron Hunt; Pouncival = Dane Quixall; Alonzo = Daniel Timoney
Talking about my experience(s) under the cut for anyone interested (in the end, it’s for myself anyway)!
So, I’ve actually seen CATS live for the third (and last) time today! I’ve seen three different Grizabella’s now, which were all phenomenal and made me cry. Each cast member is truly amazing. Every single time I was blown away by all of them! It’s so exciting to watch them perform and to see what they’re doing when they aren’t in focus at all. I love, love, love their background acting. It’s a lot of fun! My favourite cat has been and always will be Skimbleshanks. First two times he was played by Philip Bertioli, who unfortunately came down with covid this week, so today it was Freddie Clements. Both of them are truly fantastic versions of this character! Would love to see them again, heh. Freddie’s Skimble today also paid so much attention to Admetus and Mungojerrie, out of the younger cats, which I found quite lovely to watch. Generally, I’m still blown away. The show is just so great (I mean, duh, it’s mf CATS) and since today was the last performance here it had a bit of a different feeling to it and I like that the cast (especially Rum Tum Tugger in this case) let you feel how much they enjoyed performing this all month long. Of course, the tour just started, so I’m sure they’re all eager to continue as well. It just felt amazing, is all. Their fun was palpable. <3 I’m still collecting my thoughts, so I’m pretty much just gushing right now, ah, well! All in all, I’m incredibly grateful and lucky to have seen it three times. Unforgettable, truly. <3
Also my seat today was phenomenal. I’m so lucky!!! I was so close and got hit by tails as they walked past me a couple of times, hjskfhkjhkl! This was my view:

Taipei Performing Arts Center, Taiwan, by OMA
After much anticipation, the Taipei Performing Arts Center will finally open its doors in the Taiwanese capital in March 2022.
The cultural venue, which was first unveiled by OMA in 2009, features three unique theatres that plug into a central glass cube. Unlike traditional theatres, all of the backstage areas will be made visible to the public via a looping circulatory space.

Xi'an International Football Centre, China, by Zaha Hadid Architects
This year will see the completion of a palatial football stadium by Zaha Hadid Architects, ahead of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
Among its defining features will be towering columns and an overhanging roof, which provides shelter for a series of planted terraces on its south-facing elevation.

Sydney Modern, Australia, by SANAA
In Australia, SANAA will complete its extension to the Art Gallery of New South Wales, which has been designed to contrast the existing gallery's neo-classical architecture.
The extension will be composed of a series of cascading glass-walled pavilions and incorporate an underground gallery built in a converted oil tank that dates back to the second world war.

Lanternen, Denmark, by Snøhetta and WERK Arkitekter
One of the smallest projects on this list is Lanternen, a wooden community centre for water sports that is being built on the coast of Esbjerg in Denmark.
Designed by Snøhetta with WERK Arkitekter, the building is intended to evoke the "craftmanship of boats" and will feature a large opening in its facade that guides visitors down to the water's edge.

Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, USA, by Studio Gang
Buildings due to complete in the USA this year include the redesigned Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock, which is being led by Studio Gang.
The studio offered a preview of the updated museum last year when it released a series of photos of its new folded roofscape. Cast from concrete, this roof covers a series of curving pavilions that aim to unify existing structures on the site.

What Upcoming MCU Movies Fit Marvel’s New Release Dates?
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Marvel, you’ve done it again! And by “it” I mean you’ve announced a batch of new release dates that don’t have projects attached to them just yet. It’s a fairly regular practice for Marvel Studios to announce new release dates long before they tell the public what movies will slot into them, and they often do it long before there’s even enough announced projects to fill the space.
In this case, the four new 2024 MCU movie release dates that Marvel Studios revealed brings the grand total of mystery dates to seven: July 28, 2023, Oct. 6, 2023, Nov. 10, 2023, Feb. 16, 2024, May 3, 2024, July 26, 2024, and Nov. 8, 2024. It has been a while since there have been this many of them. So what could they be? Well, we have some ideas.
The first thing to consider is the MCU projects that are definitely announced and happening, and where each of those might fit. Those movies are Fantastic Four, Blade, Captain America 4, and Deadpool 3. That’s four movies that leaves three of those dates unaccounted for. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that these are seven dates for seven projects. It’s inevitable that some of these will end up shifting their production schedules, and it’s common for Disney to reserve dates for Marvel Studios projects for that very reason, essentially staking out valuable release date real estate to warn other blockbusters off. That being said, we’ll still try and match projects to those additional three dates where we can.
Fantastic Four
First up is July 28, 2023, and we’re going to go with Fantastic Four on this one. Why? When Marvel released a sizzle reel of upcoming projects a few months back, essentially hyping everyone up for MCU Phase 4, the last thing shown was the MCU Fantastic Four logo. It seemed to signal that Fantastic Four is next on their list of priorities after the final project that is tied to a release date, which is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5, 2023.
It helps that Fantastic Four already has a director attached to the project, Jon Watts of the beloved MCU Spider-Man trilogy. With Spider-Man: No Way Home arriving in December, Watts is free to focus on Fantastic Four, and this could very well be enough time to get that movie made in time for July 2023.
Blade
Then there’s Oct. 6, 2023, and our money here is on Marvel Studios’ hotly-anticipated Blade reboot. Why? Well, it would be really cool if the MCU’s first horror movie was released in October, and superhero-adjacent films like Venom and Joker have already proven there’s massive blockbuster money to be made here. Blade is even further along than Fantastic Four at this point, having a director (Mogul Mowgli‘s Bassam Tariq), a writer (Stacy Osei-Kuffour who wrote on HBO’s Watchmen), and a star (a perfectly cast Mahershala Ali).
Then there’s Nov. 10, 2023, which is something of a mystery at the moment. While there are two announced projects that could fit here (Captain America 4 and Deadpool 3…more on both of those in a minute), I think it’s more likely that this becomes a “safety” date for Fantastic Four if it’s unable to make that July release date.
Deadpool 3
Feb. 16, 2024 looks like a perfect fit for Deadpool 3. The first film in the franchise did massive business with a February release date back in 2016, pulling in a ridiculous for an R-rated film $783 million at the global box office. While that film was a 20th Century Fox release before the Disney buyout, Marvel Studios had even bigger success with a Feb. 16 release date two years later with Black Panther. In other words, they know they can make big money here.
So why Deadpool 3 and not Captain America 4? It’s tough to say, but since this project was announced first, and we’ll have gone six years without a Ryan Reynolds Deadpool movie. That’s too long for the audience and likely for Reynolds himself. Deadpool 3 does have a writing team in Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin, but no director yet.
That being said, after seeing the magic that Reynolds worked with Free Guy director Shawn Levy, we have to wonder what a Levy-directed Deadpool 3 would look like. And Levy himself recently told us that he is “a mega fan of Deadpool and of Marvel movies in general” and that directing Deadpool 3 “is certainly an enticing thought.”
Captain America 4
May 3, 2024 seems like a good spot for the still-untitled Captain America 4, coming from the writing team of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman and another FWS alum, Dalan Musson. Anthony Mackie will wear the wings and wield the shield here, but there’s no director attached yet and this is a relatively recent announcement, which would seem to put this a little further out than the projects we mentioned above.
Shang-Chi 2
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings enjoyed a pandemic-defying, startlingly massive opening, the largest in Labor Day Weekend history. While Marvel hasn’t officially announced Shang-Chi 2 just yet, we’re just going to go ahead and say that it’s inevitable, it’s a proven box-office success, and one that would do even better with a more traditional summer blockbuster release date like July 26, 2024.
And then there’s Nov. 8, 2024. We’ve already “cheated” once by including Shang-Chi 2, a film that hasn’t even been confirmed yet (but c’mon, we all know it’s coming), so now we’re REALLY in speculation territory. The most likely scenario here is that this is one of those “safety” dates that one of the other projects named above could move to if needed, but there’s two other possibilities that we have to at least pay attention to.
Secret Wars
Wait, what? To be clear, Secret Wars is a project that has never been confirmed. But former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief and writer of the original Secret Wars Jim Shooter’s recent comments that there’s something going on at Marvel Studios using the name or the elements of the concept have raised our antennae a bit.
A couple of years ago, Joe and Anthony Russo named Secret Wars as one of the projects that could tempt them to come back and direct another Marvel movie. But recent developments with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow lawsuit may have soured the Russos on this prospect.
OR…
Avengers Forever
Recent developments on Loki with the introduction of the MCU multiverse, and the rise to prominence of Kang the Conqueror both with Jonathan Majors playing the character on the screen and Kang being given a resurgence in the pages of Marvel Comics make us think that a time and timeline hopping Avengers Forever could be happening. It would certainly account for the rumors of a project in the works that would bring back Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, something which could very well call for the kind of multiverse-hopping associated with the Avengers Forever title…which perhaps not coincidentally has just been revived for the comics.
Then again, Marvel prefers to drop their big team-up movies in the early summer, so this seems a little less likely, even for an already unlikely project.
X-Men
Marvel Studios sure is taking their sweet time announcing an X-Men related project, aren’t they? We still have no idea what form that might take, but by this point it will have been five years since the last proper X-Men movie, and certainly that’s enough time to leave audiences hungry for a reinvention of one of the most storied teams in all of comics.

So when will we get all of these new projects announced? Well, with any luck, San Diego Comic-Con will happen as normal in July 2022, and this would make for a triumphant return to Hall H for Marvel Studios, who historically own that Saturday night slot on the biggest comic con stage of them all. That sure seems pretty far off though, doesn’t it?
