The Death of Metallica’s Cliff Burton

In Sweden, on the Damage Inc. tour in support of Master of Puppets, Metallica members complained that the bunks on their tour bus were unsatisfactory and uncomfortable. The story of how Burton won the bunk differs between the two band members, as Kirk Hammett stated on VH1's Behind the Music, he and Burton drew cards, and Burton picked the ace of spades, thereby getting the first choice of bunk. Burton told Hammett "I want your bunk." Hammett replied "Fine, take my bunk, I'll sleep up front, it's probably better anyway." However, Ulrich's version of the event was: Hammett and Burton drew straws, and Burton drew the long straw, winning the choice of bunk. Burton was sleeping shortly before 7 a.m. on September 27 when, according to the driver, the bus skidded off the road and flipped onto the grass in Kronoberg County. With no safety restraints on the bunks, Burton was thrown violently through the window of the bus, which then fell on top of him, killing him instantly. He was 24 years old.

The bus driver said that the crash was caused by the bus hitting a patch of black ice on the road, but James Hetfield later stated that he first believed the bus flipped because the driver was drunk. Hetfield also stated that he walked long distances down the road looking for black ice and found none. When local freelance photographer Lennart Wennberg (who attended the crash scene the following morning) was asked in a later interview about the likelihood that black ice caused the accident, he said it was "out of the question" because the road was dry and the temperature around 2 °C (36 °F), above the freezing point of 0 °C (32 °F). This was confirmed by police who, like Hetfield, also found no ice on the road. Ljungby detective Arne Pettersson was reported in a local newspaper to have said the tracks at the accident site were exactly like ones seen when drivers fall asleep at the wheel. However, the driver stated under oath that he had slept during the day and was fully rested; his testimony was confirmed by the driver of a second tour bus that was carrying the band's crew and equipment. The driver was determined not at fault for the accident and no charges were brought against him.

Welcome to the 12th installment of 15 Weeks of Phantom, where I post all 68 sections of Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, as they were first printed in Le Gaulois newspaper 114 yeas ago.

In today’s installment, we have Part III of Chapter 5: “Suite de « La Loge N° 5 »” (“Box 5 Continued”), and Part I of Chapter 6, "Le Violon Enchanté" ("The Magic Violin").

This section was first printed on Saturday, 9 October, 1909.

For anyone following along in David Coward’s translation (the link is to the Kindle edition on Amazon US), the text starts in Chapter 5 at Moncharmin's line, “I'm sorry to hear that, my good woman” and goes to the description of Christine and Daddy Daaé in Chapter 6, “They slept in barns, in preference to a room at an inn, snuggling up next to each other in the straw just as in the old days when they were so poor in Sweden.”

There are some differences between the standard 1st Edition text and the Gaulois text. In this section, these include (highlighted in red above):

This may have been a typo in the 1st Edition, since it seems odd that Mme Giry would refer to Box 5 as *her* box after establishing it as belonging to the Phantom.

Screamer - Kingmaker

It’s their enthusiasm, the physically tangible intensity of their songs and their irrepressible drive that has always set Screamer apart from other acts. The Swedish band surrounding vocalist Andreas Wikström benefits from the group's energy and inspiring and diverse songwriting.

Screamer came together in Ljungby in 2009, a small town between Malmö and Gothenburg, and their fifth album ‘Kingmaker’ was released yesterday. It sparkles with a wealth of songs in the classic heavy metal style.

New songs such as ‘Renegade’, ‘Chasing The Rainbow’ and ‘Hellfire’ are typical Screamer numbers. Drummer Henrik Peterssonsays, “In addition, they show what we are about this time, musically as well as in terms of content. Normally our lyrics are about life on tour, the joys of heavy metal and the life that goes with it.” However, the unusual, melancholy ‘The Traveler’ is not your typical Screamer fare.

Vocalist Andreas Wikström says, “Kingmaker also features socio-critical approaches, for example on ‘Ashes And Fire’, and fantasy influences on ‘Sounds Of The Night’, which you might refer to as little adventure stories”.

Andreas is also the band’s main lyricist. He has a sure instinct for fantastic choruses. Along with longstanding members, bassist Fredrik Svensson Carlström, guitarist Dejan Rosić and their new guitarist Jon Morheim,the band combine talent, experience and an undiminished driving ambition.

Secrets of Women (1952) was photographed by Gunnar Fischer. Gunnar was born in Ljungby, Sweden and lived to be 100. He had 72 cinematography credits from 1938 to 1979. He first worked with Ingmar Bergman on Port of Call (1948) and they continued to work together on nine features through The Devils Eye (1960), including best 1,001 movies entries Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, The Magician, and The Devil's Eye, and the honorable mention Summer with Monika.

No passado dia 14 de maio foi inaugurado o museu dedicado à vida e obra de Cliff Burton, baixista dos Metallica desde 1982 até 1986, ano em que faleceu devido a acidente de viação.
