Shades of Grey: From Producer to Multi-Hyphenate Music Star
Tumblr media
Published by Rolling Stone in April 2023
For Grey, there wasn't ever any option other than music. Since before he had even entered school, he had a love for the keys of a piano. "I think I knew from my first piano lesson that I was going to be making music for the rest of my life," he says. "I didn't grasp it then. A four year-old isn't thinking about what they're going to be doing in a week, much less decades down the line, but I think a part of me knew. That piano was my first love." After a childhood spent traveling, Grey got serious about music and committed to four years in Los Angeles as a music major at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, famously known for producing talent such as Phoebe Bridgers and Josh Groban, and for being the subject of the 2012 documentary Fame High. Grey immersed himself entirely in the Los Angeles music scene, attending open mics and uploading his original music to websites like YouTube and Soundcloud. "Throwing yourself so into it, it can be the make or break point. I saw people burn out and decide music or performance were better left as hobbies. That never happened to me. That's when I really knew, oh, yeah, I have to do this for the rest of my life."
When the offer came to join the music publishing company Blossom Music Group shortly after he turned eighteen, Grey decided against furthering his studies at Berklee or USC to jump straight into the workforce. During his time with Blossom, Grey contributed toplines and production to several tracks for American and Korean artists, including Korean pop powerhouse Eternal. "I grew up more in my first year working with Blossom than I did any other year before. It was getting all these crazy opportunities as a songwriter and having to continuously better my art."
Later that same year, Blossom's label arm Blossom Records released Grey's debut track "Put My Hands On You" featuring Anderson .Paak. "It wasn't the plan, right away, to jump into a solo music career, but when the chance came, I wasn't going to deny it." A few months later, Grey made his debut in South Korea with his first EP 130 Mood: TRBL, a reference to the racing number on James Dean's Porsche Spyder. "James Dean was one of the guys, along with Kurt Cobain, that I thought was the coolest growing up. I still do. That spirit of rebelliousness, of experimentality, that's what I wanted to bring to music, and to my life, so that's where the title came from. The EP itself, it was a love story, a story of heartbreak — isn't every love story a heartbreak story, really? I was eighteen, nineteen, and I wanted to cut my heart out of my chest and package it into something bigger than myself to make it easier to deal with. I think everyone feels that way after their first big heartbreak."
Grey continued his promotions as a steadily rising soloist, releasing music aimed toward the Korean market as well as music aimed toward the U.S. He continued to work as a producer under Blossom Music Group until they parted ways in 2017. Not long after, Grey reappeared as the main vocalist of pop-rock four-piece Deep Blue. "When I started working with the guys, something just clicked. I realized there was more music I could be making as a part of a band. My former label, they understood I'd grown in a direction away from them, so our parting of ways was amicable. I remember working on "Sorry", our debut track as Deep Blue, and it felt like magic. I'd always been a bit of a lone wolf in my work, so that support system and the creative pinball effect of a group... it's what I really needed. It's still what I need to this day."
"I loved bands growing up. Nirvana, Green Day, Queen... I mean, "Heart-Shaped Box", "Last Night on Earth", "Killer Queen", those were the songs I loved in middle school and high school. I should have thought of being in a band earlier." As Deep Blue continued to grow as a band, Grey's artistic interests also grew. He reignited his solo career alongside his role in the band in 2019 and has recently released his first studio album Moodswings In To Order. "Sometimes, I get asked why it's something I even have to do when I have Deep Blue. 'Why release a song solo when it could be given to the band?', which is crazy to me. There are some things I just want to explore on my own. Like MITO, it's something that makes more sense for me to do on my own." Grey has been open about the content of his recent Moodswings In This Order EP and Moodswings In To Order album tying into his own experiences with mental illness. "For a while, I thought it wasn't really relatable to write about my experiences with bipolar disorder or anxiety. I thought, 'what if people don't connect with that? Then I'll feel more alone in it than I already do'. It felt like a risk to bring this whole world I'd created to life because of that, but it's become something really personal and cathartic for me."
In addition to his ventures in music, Grey has been noted as a promising director for his work on his own music videos and those of idol groups True North ("Can't You See Me?") and Myworld ("Girls"). "I've been into filmmaking a long time, but it never seemed as in-reach as music did. I used to experiment with making my own little music videos to my favorite songs as a kid and I self-studied it as I got older. Getting to help out with the visuals of my first EP really planted the seed. It was the videos for "Instagram" and "Howlin' 404" that really sprouted everything, though. That's how I got the True North video offer. I'd worked on the song, so I had a vision in mind, but wasn't sure I was the right fit. When when we ended up getting into ideas, it actually matched me really well. I'm really inspired by darker imagery — horror, thriller kind of stuff, anything unsettling or raw, and how that reflects the realities of the human experience. That's what a lot of my MITO work is based around visually, too, obviously."
Grey is performing at Coachella as his major American festival debut this weekend and is set to embark on his first solo tour following that. "It's awesome. Live performance, to me, has always been the essence of all of this, the lifeblood, so to get to perform my music live for the next few months... that's sick. And we've got a lot of great stuff cooked up. I've been really involved in the staging and the creative directing. It's going to be more than just a concert."

[✎ ITA 📻] Apple Music : SUGA | Agust D Radio Ep.4 - Preferiti | 09.05.23⠸
Tumblr media
🍎 Apple Music 🎵
SUGA | Agust D Radio
Episodio 4 : "Preferiti"
🎶 Playlist
Ciao e benvenutə a ‘SUGA | Agust D Radio’ su Apple Music. Ciao, Apple Music, io sono SUGA. Siamo già al 4° episodio. L'argomento di oggi saranno i nostri "Preferiti"! Ciò che ci piace di più! Iniziamo ascoltando una delle mie canzoni preferite: "Talking to the Moon" di Bruno Mars
♪ Talking to the moon – Bruno Mars
State ascoltando ‘SUGA | Agust D Radio’ su Apple Music. [*lo ripete in coreano*] Ah... "Talking to the moon"... del nostro amico Bruno Mars. Ad ogni modo... Alle medie... È stata rilasciata quando ero alle superiori. Quando eravamo trainee, l'ascoltavamo un sacco, "Talking to the moon". Remix che fanno tipo "Talking to the m-m-m moon". Per favore, ascoltate tanto "Talking to the moon", è bella!
I veri sportivi ascoltano i gruppi femminili (*ride*).
♪ Antifragile – Le Sserafim
Bentornatə a ‘SUGA | Agust D Radio’ su Apple Music, insieme a me: SUGA dei BTS.
A me è capitato quando ero piccolo, e ho avuto molta paura. Ascoltiamolo!
♪ Time – Hans Zimmer
"Django", "Kill Bill". Aaah, anche "Kill Bill" è davvero ben fatto.
♪ Opening Titles – Hans Zimmer
Aaaaaah... è davvero pazzesco, ragazzə! Mi raccomando, guardatelo. Mi chiedo come andrebbe, se fosse uscito oggigiorno, sulle piattaforme on demand.
I gusti son gusti. In passato mi piacevano parecchio i film francesi.
♪ The Last Waltz – Shim Hyun Jeong
♪ My Heart Will Go On : Love Theme from "Titanic" – Céline Dion
Avete ragione. Ascoltiamoli.
♪ Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence – Ryuichi Sakamoto
♪ Opus – Ryuichi Sakamoto
♪ Railroad Man – Ryuichi Sakamoto
CIAAAOOO!

Even though a variety of history brands, including Motown, depicted fascination with Mars, his occupation quickly stalled. So that you can press frontward, Mars begun to focus much more about songwriting and producing. He experienced good results writing songs for manufacturer Brandon Creed, who utilized certainly one of Mars' songs for the Latin group of people. During this time period, Mars also made tunes for performers like Adam Levine and wrote tunes for teams just like the Sugababes.
2009 and 2010 were key several years for Bruno Mars, and then he broke by means of following featuring on "Nothing at all to you" by B.o.B. and "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy. The two of these tunes arrived at top locations about the maps, putting Bruno Mars on the chart the first time. If You Don't Understand., he later released his first EP on the heels of this success, entitled "It's Better" Afterwards during 2010, Mars started work towards his debut record, "Doo-Wops And Hooligans." The direct solitary, "Just how you will Are," arrived at the very best place on maps around the world. Another single from your record, "Grenade," also reached to leading place on the US Billboard Popular 100. After the discharge of this successful first appearance record, Bruno Mars started collaborating with other higher-information designers, including Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg.

Also, he expended time impersonating Michael Jackson being a younger performer, which legend also enjoyed a major impact on Mars - specifically in regard to his singing fashion. Although Bruno Mars has a tendency to gravitate much more toward R&B, he "refuses to choose a lane," and his awesome albums tend to be a mixture of various types and music designs.

In return, Mars pledged to avoid issues to get a 12 months, pay an excellent, and complete 200 hrs of community service. He later on mentioned that he or she regretted the incident. Bruno Mars has been specifically the subject of a variety of copyright legal actions, with a lot of more aged bands and labels claiming he is borrowing as well greatly from classic tracks. "Uptown Funk" is especially well known in this connection, and a variety of complaints towards Mars happen to be produced.

New Post has been published on http://www.wrocklopedia.com/2020/07/31/the-2020-wizard-rock-six-month-report-january-june/
The 2020 Wizard Rock Six Month Report: January-June, Part 1!
It’s been a great 6 months for wizard rock. In addition to numerous online concerts (including a 12-hour long festival!), the return of Yes All Witches grants and the launch of WZRD Radio, lots of artists both new and old have released lots of great new songs! Plus, several rare and out-of-print wrock releases have been given new life and new listeners through the Wizrocklopedia Music Archive and elsewhere. I am now proud to present a chronological list of ALL the wizard rock released or rereleased from the 1st of January to the 30th of June, 2020, totaling 38 releases and more than 130 songs! This is the first of three parts—stay tuned for the second part tomorrow! Enjoy the tunes and please support the artists! All of them are awesome and completely worth your time. If I missed any releases, let me know in the comments below or at wizrocklopedia [at] gmail [dot] com! Also, please comment and tell us what songs you liked the most—and what you’re excited to hear about next!
January 1: Pussycat Dolores – Boss Witch album: Bandcamp | iTunes | Spotify | YouTube
This album by Swedish auteur Pussycat Dolores set off the year right. Featuring a mix of comedic and reflective tunes, this album both deepens the character of Dolores Umbridge and provides a rallying cry for fans in the modern age.
January 3: Creevey Crisis – Letters in Fall EP: Bandcamp | iTunes | Spotify | YouTube
This latest EP by longtime wrocker and ‘Pedia alum Creevey Crisis is a change from his usual work—it’s acoustic! CC’s songs transform into beautiful and lilting ballads under this approach.
January 10: Zac Anger – “Don’t Kill Ginny:” Bandcamp | “Page 596:” Bandcamp
This underground musician reissued two old wrock songs on his latest compilation. “Don’t Kill Ginny” is a plea to not kill Ginny when the 7th book comes out, so it’s quite a bit out of date. However, “Page 596,” about Severus Snape and Dumbledore’s death, wonderfully evokes the anger and the sadness of the situation and definitely stands the test of time!
Sometime in January: Newt Skabander – Pick It Up! (Demos) EP: Bandcamp
Wrockin’ ska band Newt Skabander released their debut EP in December 2019, but they added two additional tracks to it at some point in January. One song is straightforward Newt Scamander storytelling, and one is solid social commentary!
March 15: Dwight Evan Young – “Always:” Bandcamp | iTunes | Spotify | YouTube
Young’s debut wizard rock single features a delightful carousel-like sound and heartbreakingly beautiful lyrics from Snape’s perspective at his death.
March 20: Robert Shredford – “Moaning Myrtle:” Bandcamp | iTunes | Spotify | YouTube
Indie rockers Robert Shredford had a wrock song on their debut EP—it’s about how Moaning Myrtle is all sexually frustrated and stuck in the bathroom! It also wrocks pretty hard!
March 20: Tom Smith – “Hogwarts Holodeck:” Bandcamp
I guess March 20 was the goofy sexy wizard rock day, because filk legend Tom Smith included a wacky Star Trek/Potter crossover song on his newest album Holy Crap! We should have crossovers like this more often.
Sometime in March: Les Barnabas Cuffe – “Harry Est Là – (hallelujah):” Soundcloud | “La tristitude Harry Potter:” Soundcloud
This French wizard rock band released two singles in early 2020, both of which are lo-fi, acoustic and have clever lyrics (in French). “Harry Est Là – (hallelujah)” is a parody of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah!” Looking forward to hearing much more from this musician!
April 17: Jack Forman – “Little Dobby Does It:” iTunes | Spotify | YouTube
Jack Forman of the comedy rock band Recess Monkey included a single wrock song on his latest solo album. It’s a fun tribute to Dobby’s awesome deeds and how cool he was! Dig it!
May 1: Harry and the Potters – Mostly Camping album: Bandcamp
This album by Harry and the Potters consists of outtakes from the writing sessions for their 2019 album Lumos. But boy these outtakes are incredible songs and the album is just as cohesive as Lumos, just in a totally different way!
That only takes us up to the beginning of May—come back tomorrow for the second part of the January-June 2020 Wizard Rock Six Month Report! And believe me when I tell you that the incredible releases are only just getting started. Thanks for reading!

ryan destiny. cis female. she/her. / kaia moore just pulled up blasting control by halsey — that song is so them ! you know, for a(n) twenty-three (23) year old singer / heiress, i’ve heard they’re really -materialistic, but that they make up for it by being so +ambitious. if i had to choose three things to describe them, i’d probably say furs, jewelry and heels. here’s to hoping they don’t cause too much trouble ! ( LJ, 20, est, they/them )
career claim: rihanna, jhene aiko + sza
hey everyone! so you guys already know kaia, nothing has really changed about her personality wise, BUT i gave her a new career and switched up her background just a bit! this is mostly just for future reference about kaia, but if anyone wants to plot something fresh with her, just like this or message me and we can work something out!
basics.
NAME: kaia moore. PRONOUNS: she/her. AGE: twenty-three. BIRTH DATE: march 4th, 1997. BIRTH PLACE: los angeles, california. HOMETOWN: los angeles, california. CURRENT RESIDENCE: los angeles, california. NATIONALITY: american. ETHNICITY: african-american. RELIGION: none practiced. OCCUPATION: heiress, singer. LANGUAGES: english (native), french (intermediate), spanish (novice). SEXUAL ORIENTATION: pansexual. ROMANTIC ORIENTATION: panromantic.
visual.
FACECLAIM: ryan destiny. EYE COLOR: dark brown. HAIR COLOR: dark brown. HEIGHT: 5 feet, 4 inches.. WEIGHT: 130 pounds. TATTOOS: none yet. PIERCINGS: ears, belly button.
kaia was born into a wealthy family right off the bat. her father ran a fortune 500 company and her mother was a retired singer who rose to fame in the mid eighties and dominated the industry up until she retired and had kaia in 1997.
for as long as kaia can remember, her parents’ relationship had been toxic. they were always arguing with one another and cheating on one another. kaia wouldn’t be surprised if her and her siblings were half siblings given how often their mom cheated on their father and vice versa.
ever since she was a little girl, her parents, her mother especially, was really hard on her and her siblings. if they expressed an interest in something, she made them practice it until they perfected it. oftentimes that would lead to them developing a hatred towards what they once loved because she ruined it for them.
the first thing that their mother ever ruined for her was dancing. she wanted to be a ballet dancer when she was four years old. her mother put her in lessons and suddenly it was like all she was allowed to do was ballet. for six years kaia had to endure ballet lessons even though she didn’t want to, and she despised it by the time she was able to get out - still does to the day tbh
her music career started when she was just fifteen years old. she was signed to her mother’s former label and they worked on music for a year until she released her debut album when she was sixteen. everything was pretty much done for her, she was just told what to sing and how to sing it. she enjoyed music though, so she didn’t really mind it at first.
she got pretty popular pretty early on, more than she thought she would. she quickly began to grow weary of the industry because even at a young age, she was being sexualized and it made her feel pretty uncomfortable.
on top of that, she had signed a contract that made it so that she had to release at least one album every year, although it would be preferred that she release two. not only did she have albums to release, but she had to tour, do appearances, and other performances. she was being stretched super thin and her stress was becoming more and more difficult to handle.
by the time she was twenty and had been in the industry for a few years, she released seven studio albums - one in 2013, two in 2014, two in 2015, one in 2016 and one in 2017.
the stress on her mind and body from being so overworked eventually took its toll, and she ended up having to take a break from the industry altogether. she developed major anxiety issues and had to go on medication for it. that was in 2018, the same year that her contract with her label expired. they gave her hell, trying to get her to sign back with them, but she refused.
they tried to have her blacklisted in the industry, but fortunately for kaia, her name still held a lot of star power. if someone heard her name, they’d want to work with her, regardless of her label.
now she’s under a new label and is currently working on her first EP
is very bitter towards her mother because her mother basically saw everything her former label did to her and didn’t try to help her or stop it, even when she was still a teenager. they don’t get along, and they don’t even speak these days unless they absolutely have to.
she’s nervous about releasing new music because she’s afraid that people have forgotten her/won’t like her new sound.
still the same kaia personality wise - materialistic, a little catty, kind of a bitch, but a loyal ass friend.
only this time add a dash of bitterness and self deprecation.
and that’s pretty much it!

I have a list of ~900 albums from 2019 that I still want to eventually listen to / review [IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT ALERT]
For this project (already 125+ releases deep), which is just impossibly daunting and makes me head hurt. IDK how to streamline this process or is any “critic” out there really listening to “all” the good music? It’s impossible I guess... BUT needless to say, these have made this list from an even larger pool of music that I either listened to briefly and immediately dismissed or (gasp!) never even came across my radar (radar = many many music blogs I follow via RSS).
Anyway, because I’ll most likely never get to this (whatever this is, an Xgau parody or something)... Here is the list (please ignore some of my notations/typos):
