I think it's a tricky thing to talk about.

Because women were disproportionately targeted for lobotomies- women, children, and disabled people. My own mother narrowly avoided being lobotomized for her epilepsy in the late '50s, because my grandparents' friends advised them to avoid taking her to a fashionable neurosurgeon who'd set up practice in their city.

(Upon researching a bit, I think there's a chance it may have been the doctor who destroyed Rosemary Kennedy's brain. Chilling either way, since Mom went on to patent inventions, help dozens of disabled kids as a special ed teacher, sustain a 40+ year marriage and counting, have three children of her own, travel the world, act, write, create, dream, adventure...and all of that could have been thwarted by some butcher when she was 6 years old. For many of those 50K people, it was. And that's not nothing.)

But. It's a fallacy to say "all housewives in the 1950s were lobotomized or drugged to keep them complacent, and none were content with their lives otherwise." And a dangerous one, I think. Because it can lead to people thinking that if an oppressed person IS happy, well, they must not be oppressed!

Also, on a micro level, I feel like we owe these people the reality of their lives. We owe the women of the 1950s, each individual one, an accurate representation of her experience when we talk about it. I know some of them found happiness. I'm glad they did. Life was hard enough for women as a group- I don't want to erase what joy they did manage to wring out of their circumstances.

Sometimes I think I’ve made the whole lapis implant operation thing in my lore too ridiculous and messed up but then I remember lobotomies were real medical procedures still performed by “credible” medical institutions up into the 50s and 60s. i just watched a tik tok about someone getting a lobotomy tattoo as a psych student and some people were saying that it was insensitive, which if she’s going to be interacting with patients in her career then i agree with it. like just imagine meeting a new therapist and you see lobotomy tools on their arm? that would make me uncomfortable. but others were saying that the memes and jokes were insensitive too. and how getting a lobotomy as a white women is also insensitive bc lobotomies mostly affected black and gay people

i get their point, bc the misconception of lobotomies being used only on white housewives can be a dangerous one that lends itself to white feminism

The anti got so mad that they said “female proshippers with a non con kink deserve to get raped since they enjoy it so much in fiction”, went private for a while, deleted the list but came back after changing their @ and made a QRT that said “is it transphobic to be against adult x minor ships? I hope proshippers get lobotomized”

Looks to me like radfeminism/transphobia is rampant and supported in anti spaces, it’s almost a defining trait

Were the children in Baron Kelvin's estate lobotomized or given some type of surgery to make them so emotionless or were they so desensitized to what was happening to them?

You can see scars on their heads at least in the anime but could've been just where the doctor was taking out the bones.

Did some attempt to run away and if so, is there one still out there?

Even if there isn't a slim chance of that happening, I feel that would make a good fanfiction idea. I think I may use that.

Lobotomies

I do believe that the circus doctor performed lobotomies on the kidnapped children. I've posted about it a few times, including to at least one ask.

And that led to this followup ask and reply.

The doctor removed bones for use in the prosthetics process after they died, like in those "circus performances". He also might have killed a few, like the one he stabs in front of our earl, if the supply of bones was getting low.

I have no idea if any of the children ran away, say... before the procedure was done... but I sort of doubt it.

It would potentially make an interesting fanfic, but you would need to give the kid a really good, reasonable opportunity and method of escape for me to find it enjoyable. Particularly if it ends up being a successful attempt.

The Paradism Cult is a massive cult group based in Denmark, but have followers scattered all over the world in its international branches. A religion the followers consider is above every other religion in the world. Paradism followers, referred to as Paradists, all follow and worship The Goddess of Paradise, a Bird-of-Paradise named Thea Thelma Anselm.

Thea herself is not an actual goddess or deity of sorts, but through her cunning manipulation skills she manages to convince hundreds if not thousands of people that she is a goddess sent from above, Paradise. Thea convinces people that there is a higher heaven called Paradise and the only way into Paradise is through death after her blessing. In reality, Thea is no more than an ex-brain surgeon who got fired over several medical controversies - including attempts of lobotomy. ...And that's exactly what Thea does to many of her devoted Paradists. The whole cult is her wild fantasy and experiment.

In more recent years, Thea has successfully seduced and roped August Silberg into the scheme and crowns him as The God of Paradise. Some rumored August was also lobotomized by Thea.

This caused the divorce that split the Silberg Family with the daughters in Svane's custody while the sons are in August's. Cooper and Cygnus were raised to be the promised Sons of Paradise - until they both ran away one day.

Paradism even owns their own churches in several locations under the guise of being a Christian church. They're often very secluded and secretive in their worships, but some has turned to more ... violent and dark methods in converging.

[TENTATIVE CANON END] Eventually, Paradism does get exposed and shut down by the military/government after Cygnus and Cooper confronted Thea and August for abducting Swanno and Axon (with the help of Formes and Albert). Thea was sentenced to death while August remained behind bars for an undecided time span. Some Paradists across the world still try to upheld Paradism, but with their leader dead, they mostly crumble on themselves.

[TENTATIVE BAD END AU] In an attempt to free Swanno and Axon from being sacrificed by the cult, Cygnus trades himself for their lives. Thea uses the opportunity to lobotomize Cygnus and turn him against everyone, now as The Son of Paradise. Swanno and Axon are allowed to be free, but Paradism remains, with Cygnus now in partial hold of it.
